• 2:12
Speaker 3: McCuskey, Morning Dave Mornings, Sir, How are you? I am fine.
• 2:16
Speaker 3: I just like the way your your face lights up
• 2:18
Speaker 3: when I say big lely piggy wiggly.
• 2:20
  Speaker 4: You enjoy that?
• 2:21
  Speaker 3: For summer?
• 2:21
Speaker 7: The number one uh ad read in probably all of
• 2:25
  Speaker 7: American radio.
• 2:26
Speaker 3: Yeah, big lee pigly wiggly.
• 2:28
  Speaker 4: Yeah it's great.
• 2:29
Speaker 3: Yeah, that's perfect. Yes, yeah, we love those folks over there,
• 2:33
Speaker 3: and I've learned of perfect saying big lee pigly wiggly.
• 2:36
Speaker 4: Yes, that's correct. Everyone should have a bigley pickley wiggly.
• 2:39
Speaker 4: Do you see how well I said that?
• 2:40
  Speaker 8: Yeah?
• 2:40
  Speaker 4: I'm auditioning.
• 2:41
Speaker 3: I mean, you know, if this political thing doesn't work out,
• 2:44
Speaker 3: maybe you could take over this show. Others have done it.
• 2:46
Speaker 3: It has happened before, Others have done it and done
• 2:48
Speaker 3: it quite well. You ever thought about doing a podcast
• 2:51
Speaker 3: because that seems to be what everybody does these days?
• 2:53
  Speaker 4: No, I haven't really. I mean I think you'd be
• 2:58
Speaker 4: good at that. JB.
• 2:59
Speaker 7: I think I could probably do it, but I think
• 3:02
Speaker 7: I don't have a lot of free time to be
• 3:04
Speaker 7: doing long form what do you.
• 3:06
Speaker 3: But if you were not tied up in this whole
• 3:09
Speaker 3: political thing, then you could do that.
• 3:12
Speaker 7: Yeah, I think it would be super fun.
• 3:15
Speaker 4: Uh huh, I think it would be fun.
• 3:16
Speaker 7: I think I probably could do it, but right now
• 3:19
Speaker 7: my focus is somewhere else.
• 3:20
Speaker 3: Yeah, your focus has been in a lot of places.
• 3:23
Speaker 3: First of all, I'm going to say I heard the
• 3:25
Speaker 3: discussion that you had on talk line yesterday. I was
• 3:28
Speaker 3: listen to do it in my office when you were
• 3:30
Speaker 3: on with Wilson and Meadows yesterday, And in course you
• 3:32
Speaker 3: came on to talk about some recent decisions, which we're
• 3:33
Speaker 3: going to get to as it pertains to the Attorney
• 3:36
Speaker 3: General's office. But I did think it was an interesting
• 3:39
Speaker 3: discussion on the whole Charlie Kirk thing. And I'm going
• 3:42
Speaker 3: to talk about this a little bit later on the
• 3:43
Speaker 3: lead story this morning. Wv Metronews dot com. They had
• 3:46
Speaker 3: a vigil held on the WVU campus for Charlie Kirk
• 3:50
Speaker 3: last night, and they knew it was going to be big.
• 3:52
Speaker 3: They had no idea. University officials, even the folks from
• 3:56
Speaker 3: turning point, which was his organization that are quoted in
• 4:00
Speaker 3: the story said we had no idea it would be
• 4:02
Speaker 3: this big and that this many people would show up.
• 4:05
Speaker 4: Yeah, and there's another one on Thursday at the state Capitol.
• 4:08
Speaker 7: The governor and the Executive Committee here in Kannall County
• 4:12
Speaker 7: or hosting one at the Capitol. So everybody who wants
• 4:15
Speaker 7: to come out and pay their respects to a great
• 4:17
Speaker 7: man and celebrate the ideals of free speech, I think
• 4:24
Speaker 7: should try to get there.
• 4:26
Speaker 3: That was one of my takeaways. I'mst spend a whole
• 4:30
Speaker 3: lot of time on this because we get other things
• 4:31
Speaker 3: to get to. That's one of the takeaways that I
• 4:33
Speaker 3: took from the whole thing. And look, I was not
• 4:36
Speaker 3: as in tune with Charlie Kirk as what a lot
• 4:38
Speaker 3: of younger people were, because quite frankly, he wasn't as
• 4:41
Speaker 3: we used the term in broadcasting. He wasn't in my demo,
• 4:45
Speaker 3: you know, I mean, he appealed. He was early thirties guy.
• 4:47
Speaker 3: That's who his audience was. But I do know of
• 4:50
Speaker 3: the numbers that he had as far as his podcast
• 4:54
Speaker 3: and the appearances that he made on television and the
• 4:57
Speaker 3: speaking engagements and things of that nature. But you know,
• 5:02
Speaker 3: and you guys, I think summed it up perfectly yesterday.
• 5:05
Speaker 3: The ability to have free speech and to be able
• 5:09
Speaker 3: to just speak about things that maybe and listen to,
• 5:14
Speaker 3: or at least tolerate things that you don't necessary not
• 5:19
Speaker 3: you personally, but you don't necessarily agree with, is eroding
• 5:25
  Speaker 3: evermore every day.
• 5:26
Speaker 7: Yeah, And I think the point that you made about
• 5:29
Speaker 7: you not being in his demo is an important one.
• 5:31
Speaker 7: I think he made a very intentional choice to focus
• 5:36
Speaker 7: his energy on the people who were being the most
• 5:38
Speaker 7: affected by social media. And I think his thought process,
• 5:43
Speaker 7: which has proved to be correct, is that if we
• 5:47
Speaker 7: can keep young people from falling into these rabbit holes,
• 5:52
Speaker 7: we can turn them into a new generation of people
• 5:55
Speaker 7: who are tolerant of other people's views without sacrificing their own.
• 6:00
Speaker 7: And I think that's that's really the key point is
• 6:03
Speaker 7: that there are ways to express your opinion that enable
• 6:09
Speaker 7: you to stay true to what your beliefs are, and
• 6:11
Speaker 7: you don't have to sacrifice them in order to understand
• 6:14
Speaker 7: that other people disagree with you.
• 6:15
Speaker 3: Right, Yeah, And I agree with that, you know, And
• 6:20
Speaker 3: we we seem to have gotten, you know, away from that.
• 6:23
Speaker 3: And I was reading last night, doing a little bit
• 6:25
Speaker 3: of reading on on Charlie Kirk, and I'm sorry, I'm
• 6:30
Speaker 3: not on Charlie Kirk, on the Assassin, Charlie Kirk, the
• 6:34
Speaker 3: gentleman and alleged he alleged he was somebody who pretty much,
• 6:40
Speaker 3: from what I understand, I mean this, the kid had
• 6:42
Speaker 3: everything going for him. At one point thirty four act
• 6:46
Speaker 3: full ride to Utah State University lasted one semester, was
• 6:49
Speaker 3: in an apprenticeship program for an electrical type program, which
• 6:53
Speaker 3: is great, but just became totally immersed uh. And it
• 6:58
Speaker 3: actually happened before he became political. He lived his entire
• 7:01
Speaker 3: life pretty much online. Therein lies a problem with a
• 7:06
Speaker 3: lot of people, and it's and it's an issue. And
• 7:09
Speaker 3: I'm not going to say, JB it's an issue with
• 7:11
Speaker 3: a lot of younger people, because it is. It's also
• 7:13
Speaker 3: an issue with a lot of older people too. You know,
• 7:16
Speaker 3: every now and then, put the phone down, touch some grass.
• 7:19
Speaker 3: I think is the current terminology that people like. That
• 7:22
Speaker 3: was Charlie's phrase. Yeah, yeah, oh was I didn't know
• 7:24
Speaker 3: it was his phrase.
• 7:25
Speaker 4: That's why everybody's using it these days.
• 7:26
Speaker 3: I had no idea. I had no idea and his.
• 7:29
  Speaker 4: Point is correct.
• 7:29
Speaker 7: There's a humanity in actual interaction, and there's an inhumanity
• 7:33
Speaker 7: in digital interaction. Right, And it's very, very easy to
• 7:36
Speaker 7: call somebody a fascist or a bigot, or a Nazi
• 7:39
Speaker 7: or a racist or any of these other things that
• 7:41
Speaker 7: people untruly and unfairly said about Charlie when you've never
• 7:47
Speaker 7: actually talked to him.
• 7:48
Speaker 3: Right, Yeah, I agree with that.
• 7:50
Speaker 7: And he gave thousands upon thousands, if not millions, of
• 7:53
Speaker 7: people the opportunity to talk to him. And I don't
• 7:57
Speaker 7: know that I've ever seen anybody else under take a
• 8:00
Speaker 7: mission of that scope.
• 8:02
Speaker 3: Talking to Attorney General jam McCuskey. Now, let's go to sports.
• 8:06
Speaker 3: Let's go to sports. Here's a transition time after the
• 8:08
Speaker 3: sports will go to weather. But you're officely been involved
• 8:12
Speaker 3: in a lot of sports here lately. But I like sports.
• 8:17
Speaker 3: I love sports. I absolutely love sports. Remember I almost
• 8:19
Speaker 3: died from it Sunday, that's I heard if you if
• 8:22
Speaker 3: you followed me on Twitter, yeah, I almost.
• 8:24
Speaker 4: Your heart rate monitor was placed on to the internet for.
• 8:27
Speaker 3: I'm still still living that down. But no, I did
• 8:30
Speaker 3: not almost die. But anyway, uh, you you're you followed
• 8:35
Speaker 3: the opening brief with the US Supreme Court defending the
• 8:37
Speaker 3: Save Women's Sports Act. Talk about that.
• 8:39
Speaker 7: Yeah, So, the West Virginia Legislature passed the Save Women's
• 8:42
Speaker 7: Sports Act a couple of years ago, and the idea
• 8:45
Speaker 7: behind the the Act is that biological males should not
• 8:48
Speaker 7: be playing sports against biological females. And that makes sense.
• 8:52
Speaker 7: And the reason that that makes sense is that we
• 8:54
Speaker 7: have laws in this country, specifically titled nine, which were
• 8:59
Speaker 7: designed to create a level playing field for women to
• 9:03
Speaker 7: play sports. And there are just inherent physical differences between.
• 9:07
  Speaker 4: Men and women.
• 9:08
Speaker 7: And in order for those playing fields and for the
• 9:10
Speaker 7: ideals of Title nine to be successful, we have to
• 9:14
Speaker 7: ensure that women are playing against people that have similar
• 9:19
Speaker 7: biological characteristics. That's what this bill seeks to do. That's
• 9:22
Speaker 7: why we are so vehemently defending it. It's about giving
• 9:26
Speaker 7: our women and girls the opportunity to play sports in
• 9:29
Speaker 7: a safe and fair environment.
• 9:31
Speaker 3: And I want to continue with that as it pertains
• 9:35
Speaker 3: to sports. The NCAA men's basketball chatter bread. There are
• 9:38
Speaker 3: changes going forward, and those changes started with the work
• 9:42
Speaker 3: really that you and Governor Morrisey yeah put together.
• 9:45
Speaker 7: So you know, everybody remembers earlier this year when w
• 9:49
Speaker 7: got left out of the tournament. Wv was an obvious
• 9:52
Speaker 7: tournament team. I doubt they would have won the whole thing,
• 9:54
Speaker 7: but that's the point, right You don't know, And there
• 9:58
Speaker 7: were some parts of the selection committee process that were
• 10:04
Speaker 7: I don't know if untoward is exactly the right word,
• 10:06
Speaker 7: but there was a lack of transparency and a system
• 10:10
Speaker 7: that enabled those with a a vested interest in their
• 10:15
Speaker 7: own teams uh being part of the process of picking
• 10:19
Speaker 7: who the teams were. And so in the aftermath of
• 10:22
Speaker 7: West Virginia's snub, you know, we we undertook to to
• 10:27
Speaker 7: ask the NC Double A to change the way that
• 10:30
Speaker 7: they do the process so that in the future these
• 10:34
Speaker 7: problems don't occur. And and everybody remembers Bubba Cunningham was
• 10:37
Speaker 7: the head of the NC Double A selection committee. He
• 10:41
Speaker 7: was also the athletic director at the University of North Carolina.
• 10:44
Speaker 3: And the fact that his name was Bubba Bubba.
• 10:46
Speaker 7: It was yeah, I mean, it was the most on
• 10:49
Speaker 7: the nose name of all time. But you know, his
• 10:53
Speaker 7: team made it into the tournament and our team did not.
• 10:56
Speaker 7: And it was mathematically improbable when you looked at the
• 10:59
Speaker 7: resumes of the two teams for North Carolina to have
• 11:02
Speaker 7: been selected ahead of WU and and so we undertook
• 11:06
Speaker 7: a conversation and and you know, some of them were
• 11:09
Speaker 7: hard conversations with the NC double A, and we were
• 11:12
Speaker 7: able to come to a resolution and the NC double
• 11:14
Speaker 7: A actually changed their rules as it pertains to the
• 11:17
Speaker 7: selection committee as a result of of the work that
• 11:19
Speaker 7: that that we did and the Governor helped us do.
• 11:22
Speaker 7: And I think it's really a better day today for
• 11:25
Speaker 7: the NCAA tournament than it was yesterday.
• 11:27
Speaker 3: And this is going to again. And I think you know,
• 11:29
Speaker 3: there were there were there were critics of that, of
• 11:33
Speaker 3: your office's involvement and the and the governor also there
• 11:36
Speaker 3: were critics that because they said, well and I had
• 11:39
Speaker 3: a text to the show yesterday to the afternoon. Somebody said, well,
• 11:42
Speaker 3: why is this important and why why should the Attorney
• 11:46
Speaker 3: General's office be involved in that? And to that, you
• 11:48
Speaker 3: would say a couple of things.
• 11:51
Speaker 7: First of all, just because something doesn't seem like it's
• 11:54
Speaker 7: important to you doesn't mean it isn't important to a
• 11:56
Speaker 7: lot of other people, including the university. Second of all,
• 11:59
Speaker 7: we were very very successful, and third of all, we
• 12:03
Speaker 7: were able to continue to do all of the incredible
• 12:06
Speaker 7: work that the Attorney General's Office has to do at
• 12:08
Speaker 7: the same time. Right, It isn't a binary situation. It
• 12:12
Speaker 7: isn't like because I was doing this, we weren't doing that.
• 12:15
Speaker 7: We were able to do all of those things at
• 12:17
Speaker 7: the same time because we have a well run group
• 12:19
Speaker 7: with a bunch of great lawyers, and you know, it's
• 12:22
Speaker 7: my job to make sure that we are prioritizing things
• 12:24
Speaker 7: in a way to make sure that our functionality is
• 12:26
Speaker 7: going properly. And I think anybody who can look back
• 12:29
Speaker 7: at the last eight months of what we've done in
• 12:31
Speaker 7: the Attorney General's Office and say that we haven't been successful.
• 12:34
Speaker 7: We haven't been working hard for the people of West
• 12:36
Speaker 7: Virginian and we haven't been attacking all of the issues
• 12:38
Speaker 7: that West Virginians expect us to, I think you'd have
• 12:42
Speaker 7: a hard time doing that. And so, you know, it
• 12:45
Speaker 7: is it's always a priorities thing in government, right, and
• 12:50
Speaker 7: we felt that that deserved the amount of priority that
• 12:52
Speaker 7: it got, and we gave it enough attention to actually
• 12:55
Speaker 7: make a real change.
• 12:56
  Speaker 4: And I think that's important.
• 12:58
Speaker 3: Let's do in a world of pipelines, pipelines, pipelines.
• 13:02
Speaker 4: Well, we need pipeline pipeline.
• 13:04
Speaker 3: Actually there is, I think, and you would be more
• 13:06
Speaker 3: up on this than I know. I think the Supreme
• 13:08
Speaker 3: Court is taking their show on the road today. I
• 13:13
Speaker 3: think it is. I heard on the morning news this morning,
• 13:15
Speaker 3: and pipelines are going to be a part of the discuss.
• 13:18
  Speaker 9: Yeah.
• 13:18
Speaker 4: So pipelines have become a.
• 13:22
Speaker 7: Political target of the environmental left and people that hate
• 13:27
Speaker 7: the idea that we are going to be an energy
• 13:29
Speaker 7: independent nation and we're going to use the God given
• 13:32
Speaker 7: resources that are below our feet to fuel an American revolution.
• 13:37
Speaker 7: They know that if we can't get the gas and
• 13:40
Speaker 7: oil from the well to the processing facility, that it
• 13:43
Speaker 7: can't be used, and so they target these pipeline projects.
• 13:47
Speaker 7: And so one of the things that our office does,
• 13:49
Speaker 7: not just in West Virginia, but in the whole country,
• 13:52
Speaker 7: is that we defend the ability for our natural resources companies,
• 13:55
Speaker 7: the people who power our daily lives, the people who
• 13:58
Speaker 7: create the oil that creates everything we do every day,
• 14:01
Speaker 7: the people that create the gas and the coal that
• 14:04
Speaker 7: makes all of the electricity that powers our iPhones and
• 14:07
Speaker 7: and your tesla's uh if you will. And so we
• 14:11
Speaker 7: we we defend our pipeline projects from from coast to
• 14:15
Speaker 7: coast because we know that the people that are building
• 14:19
Speaker 7: them are doing them environmentally soundly and that they are
• 14:24
Speaker 7: They're so important to the future of this country that
• 14:28
Speaker 7: you know it is incumbent upon people who are willing
• 14:31
Speaker 7: to stand up to do So what else is.
• 14:33
Speaker 3: On your mind this morning?
• 14:35
Speaker 7: You know it is, Uh, it's a wonderful day to
• 14:38
Speaker 7: be a West Virginian. But there's a lot of stuff
• 14:40
Speaker 7: going on in the world, and you know it is
• 14:42
Speaker 7: I got a ten and an eight year old at home,
• 14:46
Speaker 7: and you know, there's a lot.
• 14:48
  Speaker 4: On my mind.
• 14:49
  Speaker 7: It is a I think it's a very very difficult
• 14:52
Speaker 7: time to be a young person in this country.
• 14:56
Speaker 3: I can't imagine being that as young as you're oughters
• 15:00
Speaker 3: are and what the future And I hate to be
• 15:02
Speaker 3: that guy because generally speaking, I'm a positive, upbeat guy,
• 15:05
  Speaker 3: but I can't imagine. It's what if we don't do
• 15:10
Speaker 3: something with the world. And I don't know what that
• 15:12
Speaker 3: answer is, but what it's going to be like for them.
• 15:16
Speaker 7: Watching a young father get gunned down in broad daylight
• 15:18
Speaker 7: during a political rally. As a young father who speaks
• 15:21
Speaker 7: frequently at open air political rallies, is you know a
• 15:25
Speaker 7: little concerning for me. But more than that, I'm just
• 15:29
Speaker 7: so hopeful that we can use the events of the
• 15:33
Speaker 7: last week or so to do better, because my kids
• 15:37
Speaker 7: deserve a country where they feel very, very free to
• 15:40
Speaker 7: express whatever opinions they have. I hope my kids turn
• 15:43
Speaker 7: out to be conservative, but you never know. I'd say
• 15:47
Speaker 7: the chances are pretty good.
• 15:48
Speaker 3: I'd say, well, you know, are you talking about your sister?
• 15:51
  Speaker 4: Though that's yesterday?
• 15:52
Speaker 3: That was very interesting.
• 15:54
Speaker 7: I grew up in a home where the free exercise
• 15:56
Speaker 7: of political beliefs was very well promoted, and we were
• 16:01
Speaker 7: allowed to be and think whoever we wanted to be.
• 16:03
Speaker 7: And I think that's important, and I try really hard
• 16:05
Speaker 7: to make sure my kids have the you know, to
• 16:08
Speaker 7: the extent that it's possible, the freedom to become whomever
• 16:11
Speaker 7: they want to be, but whomever they want to be
• 16:14
Speaker 7: needs to be protected from violence, and that whether that's
• 16:19
Speaker 7: it's just terrifying to when I was at a conference
• 16:24
Speaker 7: last week and they were going through the AI chatbots
• 16:30
Speaker 7: and how they interacted with teenagers, and one of the
• 16:34
Speaker 7: AI companies, and I won't use their name at this time,
• 16:37
Speaker 7: but the AI taught the child how to kill themselves,
• 16:44
Speaker 7: down to how to tie a noose and then wrote
• 16:47
Speaker 7: the suicide note for the kid that actually killed themselves.
• 16:51
Speaker 7: And when you start to look at what's happening from
• 16:55
Speaker 7: human to human, but also what's happening from computer to human,
• 16:59
Speaker 7: it's just an intent densely dangerous time to be a
• 17:01
Speaker 7: young person in this country. And it's concerning as a parent,
• 17:04
Speaker 7: it's concerning as a person who has the ability to
• 17:08
Speaker 7: try to stop some of these evils and these ills,
• 17:12
Speaker 7: and you know, we work every day to try to
• 17:14
Speaker 7: do it, and sometimes it just feels a little bit
• 17:16
Speaker 7: like you're playing whack a mole. But we're going to
• 17:17
Speaker 7: wake up every single morning and we're going to do
• 17:20
Speaker 7: our best to deliver a world for our kids that
• 17:24
Speaker 7: is safe, that has abundant, abundant love and respect for
• 17:31
Speaker 7: each other. And I hope we can get there, and
• 17:33
Speaker 7: I'm confident we can. But at the first first couple
• 17:37
Speaker 7: steps of any really long journey, it seems like a
• 17:39
  Speaker 7: herculean task.
• 17:41

Speaker 3: to talk about Dick, good morning, Welcome to the show, sir,

  Speaker 3: Good morning Dave.
• 20:35
  Speaker 4: How are you.
• 20:36
Speaker 3: I am doing fine, mister Jared. It's always a pleasure

Speaker 3: how to use his hands turn the microphone. I want
• 20:50
Speaker 3: to ask you John, real quick before we get into this.
• 20:52
Speaker 3: We had John metrom Metrows midday last weekend. Your company
• 20:56
Speaker 3: on Friday did an event to honor first responders up
• 21:02
Speaker 3: in Morgantown. I thought it was a fantastic idea.
• 21:05
Speaker 4: How did it go?
• 21:05
  Speaker 3: It went?
• 21:06
Speaker 12: It was fantastic. Dave had several first responders from the
• 21:10
Speaker 12: Morgantown area to visit our site. One lucky Morgantown area
• 21:17
Speaker 12: police lady policewoman won two tickets to the pit game
• 21:20
Speaker 12: and got to see a wonderful Mountaineer victory Saturday. So
• 21:24
Speaker 12: the event was well well done. And appreciate you having
• 21:30
Speaker 12: us on last week to talk about it to recognize
• 21:33
Speaker 12: first responders, and you know, it was that September eleventh
• 21:36
Speaker 12: that just brings first responders and what they do for
• 21:39
Speaker 12: us home, and we were glad to be able to
• 21:42
Speaker 12: do it and appreciate you letting us talk about it.
• 21:45
Speaker 3: Absolutely sound like it was gonna be a fantastic event.
• 21:48
Speaker 3: And I know it was held in Morgantown because your
• 21:50
Speaker 3: county does a lot of work up there, but it
• 21:51
Speaker 3: wasn't just limited to Morgandown people. I think you get
• 21:53
Speaker 3: all kinds of people there. So's and somebody got the
• 21:56
Speaker 3: tickets to what turned out to be a great game.
• 21:58
Speaker 12: Guess yes, indeed, yes, it was great.
• 22:01
Speaker 3: All right, So let's first talk about Dick. I'll start
• 22:04
Speaker 3: with you, for those who may not have heard you
• 22:06
Speaker 3: of the last time you were on the air, talk
• 22:07
Speaker 3: about this fellowship Home and what it is that home is.
• 22:11
Speaker 13: Yeah, I'm well, I'm Dick Doroty. I'm the executive director
• 22:14
Speaker 13: of the Canava Fellowship Home where your neighbor across the
• 22:18
Speaker 13: parking lot of eleven twenty one Virginia Street. We are
• 22:21
Speaker 13: the oldest sober living facility in the state of West Virginia.
• 22:24
Speaker 13: We were established in nineteen sixty seven as an originally
• 22:27
Speaker 13: has an outreached mission of our church next door in
• 22:30
Speaker 13: same block too, first Presbyterian Church, and so over the
• 22:34
Speaker 13: years it was originally a kind of a halfway house
• 22:38
Speaker 13: or a respite for men suffered from alcohol problems, and
• 22:41
Speaker 13: that men in the church that had been gotten sober
• 22:44
Speaker 13: in alcoholics anonymous got together and rented a house and
• 22:50
Speaker 13: had a place where men could get better from drinking
• 22:53
Speaker 13: for a period of time. So it's morphed into a
• 22:56
Speaker 13: sober living program that is a three phase program that
• 22:59
Speaker 13: we work with people that have opiate addictions and the
• 23:03
Speaker 13: substance use just sort of the flavor of the day
• 23:05
Speaker 13: what men are addicted to call on meth and fetamen
• 23:08
Speaker 13: and alcohol and all those sorts of things. And so
• 23:12
Speaker 13: we've been we've expanded over the years. We currently have
• 23:16
Speaker 13: thirty five beds, and we recently purchased months before last
• 23:21
Speaker 13: we bought the Johnstone building or the law office next
• 23:24
Speaker 13: door to us on the corner of Brooks.
• 23:26
  Speaker 4: And Virginia Street.
• 23:28
Speaker 13: And I met John about a year and a half ago,
• 23:32
Speaker 13: I say and told him, what was you know, what
• 23:35
  Speaker 13: we were doing?
• 23:36
Speaker 4: And we were We.
• 23:37
Speaker 13: Got together and we hit kind of hit it off,
• 23:39
Speaker 13: and he introduced me to Poke Valley Bank and we
• 23:44
Speaker 13: we made a deal to buy the building and it's
• 23:47
Speaker 13: and John's going to help us with the construction, with
• 23:49
Speaker 13: the chair construction, and so it's coming to fruition. We
• 23:52
Speaker 13: closed on the building. We are now in the building.
• 23:55
Speaker 13: We've we're going to add twelve more sober living beds,
• 23:58
Speaker 13: private beds for men and suffering for in our face
• 24:03
Speaker 13: too part of our program, and we hope that so
• 24:07
Speaker 13: we'll ultimately we'll have forty seven beds.
• 24:09
  Speaker 4: In total.
• 24:09
Speaker 13: We have turned away twelve hundred people in the last
• 24:12
Speaker 13: five years since I've been the executive.
• 24:13
Speaker 3: And that's what you hear a lot from the experts
• 24:16
Speaker 3: in this field, guys, is that you hear somebody may
• 24:19
Speaker 3: want to get better, but they're just not enough beds available,
• 24:24
Speaker 3: And tragically, we hear worst case scenario. We hear a
• 24:28
Speaker 3: lot of stories where someone died waiting on a bed,
• 24:33
Speaker 3: not necessarily at your facility, but I mean, in general,
• 24:35
Speaker 3: we hear those stories all the time.
• 24:37
Speaker 13: There is a huge need in our community locally and
• 24:40
Speaker 13: in the state of West Virginia and the opioid response
• 24:44
Speaker 13: the big fund that under Governor Morrissey that now our
• 24:49
Speaker 13: Attorney General JB. Mccusky it was just here, is in
• 24:53
Speaker 13: charge of. They set up a foundation called the West
• 24:56
Speaker 13: Virginia First Foundation, and there's a lot of money available
• 24:59
Speaker 13: through that in part is going to help us fund.
• 25:02
Speaker 13: We've applied for a grant or going to apply for
• 25:04
Speaker 13: another grant with them, and we've made it an application
• 25:07
Speaker 13: through the Federal Home Own Bank for a forgivable loan
• 25:09
Speaker 13: that's going to hopefully fund a big part of this project.
• 25:12
Speaker 13: But we were here today to talk about our mission
• 25:15
Speaker 13: and about the fact that we have a two million
• 25:17
Speaker 13: dollar campaign fundraising campaign to try to pay for this
• 25:21
Speaker 13: and get it, get it infruition. We want to be
• 25:23
Speaker 13: in business this time next year. I want to fill
• 25:25
Speaker 13: those beds with men that need our help, all.
• 25:28
Speaker 3: Right, and talk about this project, talk about this, the
• 25:32
Speaker 3: whole fundraising aspect of this thing.
• 25:34
Speaker 13: Well, we have, of course, we have since we've been
• 25:37
Speaker 13: around for a long time. We have we the United Way,
• 25:41
Speaker 13: the Greater Kanalvai Foundation, the Jacobson Foundation, the day Would Foundation.
• 25:47
Speaker 13: We have a lot of different people that help us,
• 25:48
Speaker 13: and we have an annual fundraiser, and we have a
• 25:52
Speaker 13: lot of grateful alumni people that have done well after
• 25:55
Speaker 13: they've gotten sobered up through our program, that come back
• 25:58
Speaker 13: and give to us. So we have odd community support.
• 26:00
Speaker 13: And we just did a mailing that I gave you
• 26:02
Speaker 13: a copy of that came out kind of talks about
• 26:05
Speaker 13: the details of the plan, but the plan was to
• 26:08
Speaker 13: purchase the building, add the sober living. They're basically studio
• 26:13
Speaker 13: apartments for in their private rooms with shared baths, and
• 26:18
Speaker 13: they are really really nice. They're air conditioned, they they'll
• 26:21
Speaker 13: have Wi Fi, they'll have laundry service, they'll have everything
• 26:24
Speaker 13: that's needed, and we'll offer food we'll offer meals next
• 26:27
Speaker 13: door at our main facility at eleven twenty one Virginia Street,
• 26:30
Speaker 13: and so that's the first phase of our program. But
• 26:33
Speaker 13: it's expensive because the building was built. It was originally
• 26:38
Speaker 13: the bone and joint surgeons. The doctor Giz and doctor
• 26:40
Speaker 13: Sale and doctor Bengani practiced medicine there and then they
• 26:43
Speaker 13: moved up up on the hill and then it became
• 26:47
Speaker 13: a law office. But it's got good bones. But it
• 26:50
Speaker 13: has because we're going to have people who live there.
• 26:52
Speaker 13: We have to sprinkle it. We have to basically gut
• 26:55
Speaker 13: the entire building and start over again with a structure.
• 26:58
Speaker 13: And that's where mister Jarrett Can comes in. And we
• 27:01
Speaker 13: had my friend Tom Potts at Selling Associates, architect is
• 27:05
Speaker 13: also a friend that is a friend of Recovery and
• 27:09
Speaker 13: is helping us with some of the design aspects of it.
• 27:12
Speaker 13: But John has a personal story that was really interesting.
• 27:14
Speaker 13: I thought might come to light that helps that God
• 27:18
Speaker 13: works in mysterious ways, and it's just strange. How it's
• 27:22
Speaker 13: not strange, it's prophetic how it happened. But John told
• 27:24
Speaker 13: me a story and I'd like him to kind of
• 27:26
  Speaker 13: share that.
• 27:27
Speaker 12: Sared Dick, thank you buddy, and it has been a
• 27:30
Speaker 12: blessing to be able to connect with you. When I
• 27:34
Speaker 12: received that call from you, I guess it was about
• 27:37
Speaker 12: this time last year, maybe a little bit longer, and
• 27:40
Speaker 12: brought back a bunch of memories for me. My dad,
• 27:43
Speaker 12: Klein Jarrett was a resident of Canawh Valley Fellowship Home
• 27:48
Speaker 12: when it was the old house next to the Presbyterian Church.
• 27:54
Speaker 12: And Dad fought his demons for many years and was
• 27:59
Speaker 12: there and with some of the best years of his
• 28:01
Speaker 12: life is when he was sober at your facility. And
• 28:05
Speaker 12: I think low Smith had your job at right time.
• 28:08
Speaker 12: And Uh I got to meet Lou a time or
• 28:11
Speaker 12: two and and uh and Dad, Uh, Dad did the
• 28:15
Speaker 12: best he could. Unfortunately, fortunately my dad wasn't able to
• 28:20
Speaker 12: overcome his addiction and uh he he passed away at
• 28:24
Speaker 12: uh uh in a in a shelter. And so the
• 28:29
Speaker 12: opportunity for me to help you and help your calls
• 28:32
Speaker 12: and help the men at Canall Valley Fellowship Home, well
• 28:36
Speaker 12: that's just something God is put in front of me,
• 28:38
Speaker 12: and I'm I'm thankful for that and we're looking forward
• 28:41
Speaker 12: to being able to help help the program, help the mission.
• 28:45
Speaker 12: Uh that's your own.
• 28:45
Speaker 3: And What I like about having you both of you
• 28:47
Speaker 3: on the show is because I mean, look, the you know,
• 28:51
Speaker 3: the cause is great, the need is great, we all
• 28:52
Speaker 3: know that. But but you, but you two, Dick and John,
• 28:55
Speaker 3: I mean you you got You've got stories as well
• 28:58
Speaker 3: about the personal things that in your case, John, that
• 29:02
Speaker 3: your that your father went through, Dick, and things that
• 29:05
  Speaker 3: you've seen you've gone through. And I think that's I
• 29:08
Speaker 3: think that adds another layer to the story.
• 29:11
Speaker 13: Absolutely, and it is uh, you know. I I've volunteered
• 29:15
Speaker 13: at the at the Fellowship Poem for the last thirty
• 29:17
Speaker 13: plus years and I've been blessed to be the executive
• 29:20
Speaker 13: director for the last five years. And they're great. We
• 29:24
Speaker 13: have a volunteer board of directors that most of them
• 29:26
Speaker 13: are in recovery themselves, and they they believe in our
• 29:30
Speaker 13: what we do one hundred percent, and so we over
• 29:34
Speaker 13: the years, we've morphed into a program that we've proven
• 29:36
Speaker 13: that the longer men that are addicted, that have addiction
• 29:39
Speaker 13: issues stay in structured sober living, the better their chances are.
• 29:43
Speaker 13: We want to get them involved in a recovery community
• 29:45
Speaker 13: here in Charleston that the longer we keep them and
• 29:48
Speaker 13: let their brains heal and let their let their you know,
• 29:51
Speaker 13: learn about their addictions and learn about you know, get
• 29:54
Speaker 13: sponsors and worksteps, and make amends to people for things
• 29:57
Speaker 13: they've done wrong. We believe we're treating men that are
• 29:59
Speaker 13: sick with a disease that need to get well, not
• 30:02
Speaker 13: bad men that need to get good. Men sick men
• 30:05
Speaker 13: do bad things, need to get in trouble, and they
• 30:06
Speaker 13: have to pay the price, They have to make amends.
• 30:09
Speaker 13: And ultimately, though, we get to the point where they
• 30:12
Speaker 13: get well enough that they start carrying that message to
• 30:14
Speaker 13: the next guy that comes along that there's hope and
• 30:17
Speaker 13: that they can get better from an addiction and that
• 30:19
Speaker 13: they can have a fruitful life, a happy, fulfilled, you know,
• 30:24
Speaker 13: wonderful life with free from alcohol drugs. And that's basically
• 30:28
Speaker 13: our mission is is to provide that time, which is
• 30:32
Speaker 13: from six months to three years. We've proven that if
• 30:34
Speaker 13: you stay with us six months, you have a one
• 30:37
Speaker 13: in three chance, if you stay with us a year,
• 30:39
Speaker 13: you have a seventy percent chance, and if you stay
• 30:41
Speaker 13: with us three years and you stay active in recovery
• 30:44
Speaker 13: in the recovery community, you have better than eighty percent
• 30:48
Speaker 13: chances stand sober for the rest of your life.
• 30:50
Speaker 3: And so that's what has it been your experience because
• 30:52
Speaker 3: I've talked Dick to other people that do similar type things,
• 30:57
Speaker 3: and they have said that the top counselors, I don't
• 31:03
Speaker 3: know if that's the word you want to use, or
• 31:05
Speaker 3: the people that are the best at this at reaching
• 31:08
Speaker 3: people are people that have been there themselves, because I mean,
• 31:11
Speaker 3: I mean, let's think about your own experience. It's just
• 31:13
Speaker 3: like you know, I mean, you go to an institution
• 31:16
Speaker 3: of higher learning and you're being instructed by somebody who's
• 31:19
Speaker 3: never actually done this sort of thing. You know, It's
• 31:24
Speaker 3: been my experience of talking to these people that the
• 31:26
Speaker 3: people that have actually lived those lives are the better,
• 31:29
Speaker 3: are just much better at absolutely and helping, for lack
• 31:34
Speaker 3: of a better term.
• 31:34
Speaker 13: That's our house manager of My assistant director, Jay Webb
• 31:38
Speaker 13: has been He's a product of our home. He's been
• 31:41
Speaker 13: sober and clean and sober for busting his anemity. But
• 31:44
  Speaker 13: he's been he's been sober for nineteen years. He's a
• 31:49
Speaker 13: product of the Fellowship Home. I'm in, you know, I'm
• 31:52
Speaker 13: in recovery. I've been sober. It'll be thirty eight years
• 31:54
Speaker 13: on January third. This coming year. You know all the
• 31:59
Speaker 13: men that I work with and what it's lived experience.
• 32:02
Speaker 13: We employee people. We have a peer recovery support specialist,
• 32:05
  Speaker 13: it's in recovery. That's a product of our program. We're
• 32:07
Speaker 13: going to have to hire another one when we get
• 32:09
Speaker 13: done with with the expansion project here. And we have
• 32:14
Speaker 13: lots of volunteers that come into our home. Our addiction
• 32:17
Speaker 13: professional that does the counseling. He's a product of our
• 32:21
Speaker 13: program too, and he went on to get he didn't
• 32:23
Speaker 13: have a college degree. He got a college degree and
• 32:25
  Speaker 13: a master's degree in addiction counseling. He's now he's counseling
• 32:28
Speaker 13: our men. So it is that lived experience that you know,
• 32:31
Speaker 13: the experience strength and hope and that we get through
• 32:34
Speaker 13: the program, through the twelve step programs.
• 32:36
Speaker 3: What we all right, people are listening right now. How
• 32:38

• 40:35
Speaker 3: had some introspection about Charlie kirks murder, and I understand

Speaker 3: the grief of Kirk's followers. They felt a personal connection

• 40:47

• 40:51
Speaker 3: with Kirk's followers, they no longer know what to think

• 42:36
Speaker 3: to threaten prosecution over First Amendment rights? I don't know
• 42:40
Speaker 3: the particulars of this case. I will say that a
• 42:45
Speaker 3: private business has right, has a right to turn down
• 42:48
Speaker 3: any business that they want to if your office depot,
• 42:51
Speaker 3: that's a pretty dumb decision, but you know you can
• 42:56
Speaker 3: a private business can refuse service to anybody that they want.
• 42:59
Speaker 3: But again, they also have to be willing to deal

• 47:22
Speaker 3: was well over a thousand people. We have a story
• 47:25
Speaker 3: in pictures posted at wv metronews dot com. Now, as
• 47:29
Speaker 3: we talked about earlier, there is going to be one
• 47:30
Speaker 3: in Charleston Thursday on the Capitol Grounds Governor Morrissey making
• 47:34
Speaker 3: that announcement, and the governor is expected to speak at
• 47:37
Speaker 3: that event. President Trump will attend one in Arizona this week,
• 47:41
Speaker 3: and in the meantime, The Wall Street Journal over the
• 47:44
Speaker 3: weekend had an op ed that was written by a
• 47:47
Speaker 3: professor of political science from California who uncovered some disturbing facts.
• 47:55
Speaker 3: According to a new poll, I'm sorry, ninety three percent
• 48:00
Speaker 3: of baby boomers think political violence in any form is wrong.
• 48:05
Speaker 3: Ninety three eighty six percent of my generation Gen X
• 48:10
Speaker 3: thinks it's always wrong, but only fifty six percent of
• 48:16
Speaker 3: the young'ins gen Z, defined as those born between nineteen
• 48:21
Speaker 3: ninety seven and twenty twelve, only fifty six percent think
• 48:25
Speaker 3: political violence is always wrong, meaning meaning that a large
• 48:30
Speaker 3: percentage of members of Gen Z, again those born between
• 48:36
Speaker 3: ninety seven and twenty twelve, are okay with political violence
• 48:42
Speaker 3: as what we saw with Charlie Kirk that my friends
• 48:48
Speaker 3: to me, is very scary, and it's only getting scarier
• 48:53
Speaker 3: as we head toward the future.
• 48:55
  Speaker 5: And I have.
• 48:58
Speaker 3: I don't know what to say. I have made my
• 49:00
Speaker 3: feelings known about about Charlie Kirk. You may or may
• 49:04
Speaker 3: not have agreed with him. I did not on many fronts,
• 49:06
Speaker 3: some of the things I did. But he did not
• 49:09
Speaker 3: deserve to die any more than anyone who may have
• 49:13
Speaker 3: been had a similar passion but was on the other side.
• 49:20
  Speaker 3: I just I don't I just have a hard time wrapping,
• 49:24
Speaker 3: you know, my head around this that someone is so
• 49:27
Speaker 3: filled with anger over words that they would go to
• 49:32
Speaker 3: that level. And again, I don't care whether they're on
• 49:34
Speaker 3: the left or the right, you know. I also also
• 49:38
Speaker 3: and you've heard me talk about this on the show
• 49:39
Speaker 3: before too, I also don't see how anybody could be
• 49:42
Speaker 3: as angry to do what they did on January sixth.
• 49:46
Speaker 3: And I felt that anybody that entered that capital on
• 49:50
Speaker 3: January sixth should have been prosecuted, and many were. Many
• 49:53
Speaker 3: were also pardoned to the fullest extent of the law. Now,
• 49:56
Speaker 3: I know, talking about maybe two different things here, but
• 50:00
Speaker 3: are we really those people were radicals, the people that
• 50:03
Speaker 3: went into the capitol in January sixth, the ones that
• 50:05
Speaker 3: did the destruction. Okay, I'm not talking about people that
• 50:08
Speaker 3: showed up and just protested, which was stupid and pointless
• 50:12
Speaker 3: in my eye, But they had the right to do that.
• 50:16
Speaker 3: Once they entered that capital and they started breaking things,
• 50:19
Speaker 3: and they started doing what they did game over, game over,
• 50:24
Speaker 3: and I agree. My feelings on this situation would have
• 50:28
Speaker 3: been the same had it been Charlie Kirk or the
• 50:30
Speaker 3: most liberal of speakers. I've been very clear about that.
• 50:34
Speaker 3: I make no differences between the two.
• 50:38
  Speaker 2: It may have.
• 50:38
Speaker 3: Well, you find me somebody on the left that is
• 50:41
Speaker 3: a Charlie Kirk and has in his gun down for
• 50:46
Speaker 3: his words, taking a father and a husband. You find
• 50:51
Speaker 3: me somebody on the left that does that, and I
• 50:53
Speaker 3: will say the exact same thing. I will condemn it
• 50:56
Speaker 3: and say that it was wrong. But Dave Alan showing

Speaker 3: a story. Why does a federal government need to threaten involvement?
• 51:14
Speaker 3: Do they need to be authoritarian? Once again, propose a
• 51:17
Speaker 3: violation of the constitution. Federal government should not get involved
• 51:19
Speaker 3: in adult It's none of their business. It's none of
• 51:21
Speaker 3: their business what a private company does. Okay, no, we're
• 51:27
Speaker 3: not going there. What do you call the person who
• 51:31
Speaker 3: pardoned them, says the text're talking about January sixth. I
• 51:33
Speaker 3: call him president because he's a president of the United States,
• 51:35
Speaker 3: So I also don't support him. I want him to
• 51:38
Speaker 3: do well because I'm an American. I'm funny that way.
• 51:41
  Speaker 3: I don't.
• 51:42
  Speaker 2: But I.
• 51:45
Speaker 3: You ask me what I call President Trump by calling
• 51:48
Speaker 3: president because he's my president. I may not agree with
• 51:50
Speaker 3: him on everything. It may not agree with him on
• 51:53
Speaker 3: a lot of things, but some things I do agree
• 51:55
Speaker 3: with him on I call him president. That's what I
• 51:57
Speaker 3: call him. Tex says Dave. All for prayer, visuals, all
