- 0:01Speaker 1: Local news now, a VOCM News Update. I'm Sarah Strickland.
- 0:06Speaker 1: The case against a man accused of impaired driving causing
- 0:10Speaker 1: death has been set over until early next month. Tyler
- 0:14Speaker 1: Day appeared in court yesterday via video link from the
- 0:17Speaker 1: Bishops Falls Correctional Center. The 32-year-old is accused of impaired
- 0:22Speaker 1: driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death, criminal negligence causing death,
- 0:28Speaker 1: and failing to remain at the scene of an accident
- 0:30Speaker 1: causing death in a vehicle-pedestrian collision at Thorburn Road and
- 0:34Speaker 1: Larkhall Street that claimed the life of a six-year-old boy. Day,
- 0:39Speaker 1: who has been appearing in court by video, requested an
- 0:42Speaker 1: interpreter yesterday, a move that appeared to surprise the court.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Day is deaf or hard of hearing, but does not
- 0:48Speaker 1: understand American Sign Language. He can read lips, however. His
- 0:53Speaker 1: matter is expected to be called in court on October 5th.
- 0:57Speaker 1: A 35-year-old man is facing charges related to the theft
- 1:01Speaker 1: of two vehicles, flight from police, and assaulting a police officer.
- 1:05Speaker 1: It all stems from a police operation that spanned from
- 1:08Speaker 1: Lewisport to Gander and ended in Musgrave Harbor last week.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Richard Duggan reports.
- 1:15Speaker 2: RCMP in Lewisport were alerted to the theft of a
- 1:18Speaker 2: vehicle around 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 2nd. The same
- 1:22Speaker 2: vehicle struck a moose near Jonathan's Pond early the following morning,
- 1:25Speaker 2: but the suspect fled the scene on foot. A passerby
- 1:28Speaker 2: who attempted to help was able to give police a
- 1:30Speaker 2: description of the man involved. A short time later, police
- 1:33Speaker 2: were contacted about a pickup stolen from a parking lot
- 1:36Speaker 2: in Gander. Because the pickup was equipped with a location app,
- 1:39Speaker 2: RCMP were able to track it to Fredericton in Gander Bay,
- 1:43Speaker 2: where it rammed a police vehicle before speeding away. The
- 1:45Speaker 2: truck was later found abandoned in Musgrave Harbor, prompting a
- 1:48Speaker 2: police search. A police dog and drone were brought in
- 1:52Speaker 2: to track the suspect, who was found several kilometers away
- 1:55Speaker 2: and arrested without incident. 35-year-old Devin Shazan Hart is facing
- 1:59Speaker 2: numerous charges, including two counts of vehicle theft, assault of
- 2:03Speaker 2: an officer with a weapon, dangerous driving, flight from police,
- 2:06Speaker 2: and driving while prohibited. He was held in custody pending
- 2:09Speaker 2: a court appearance.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Fuel prices are down for the most part today, the
- 2:14Speaker 1: exception being gasoline. The P.U.B. has put the price up
- 2:18Speaker 1: by about 4 cents per liter. All other fuels are
- 2:21Speaker 1: down by about a cent and a half. TradesNL has
- 2:25Speaker 1: endorsed the Churchill Falls Agreement ahead of next week's special
- 2:29Speaker 1: debate on the document. The provincial government held an event
- 2:33Speaker 1: at the trades organization yesterday, calling for support of the
- 2:36Speaker 1: deal heading into next week. Premier Tony Wakeham says TradesNL's
- 2:40Speaker 1: support is a recognition of what the deal will mean
- 2:43Speaker 1: for the creation of jobs and new industries.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Because this deal isn't about politicians. It's about the people
- 2:50Speaker 3: of Newfoundland and Labrador, the people who are now are
- 2:53Speaker 3: looking for those jobs to be created, the opportunities for
- 2:56Speaker 3: future generations, and the opportunities to develop new industries. That's
- 3:00Speaker 3: what this was about today.
- 3:02Speaker 1: TradesNL Executive Director Bob Byander says there's currently a 70%
- 3:07Speaker 1: unemployment rate among their members, and people are looking for
- 3:11Speaker 1: work everywhere across the country, except for in this province.
- 3:16Speaker 4: This deal, this project, is critically important to the tradespeople
- 3:20Speaker 4: in Newfoundland and Labrador and many others. contractors, employers, businesses.
- 3:25Speaker 4: When construction is busy in this province, and you can
- 3:29Speaker 4: look back only a short time ago when we were
- 3:31Speaker 4: building Long Harbour and Hebron and the Boise Bay Underground,
- 3:35Speaker 4: this province was alive with activity and people were spending money,
- 3:39Speaker 4: very excited about things. It's not that way right now.
- 3:43Speaker 1: A new school year begins today, which means the roads
- 3:46Speaker 1: will be busy with school buses and students heading back
- 3:49Speaker 1: to class. RNC is reminding drivers of a few key
- 3:53Speaker 1: rules of the road now that the summer break is over.
- 3:56Speaker 1: RNC Constable Steph Meyer says it is illegal to pass
- 4:00Speaker 1: a school bus that is stopped with its stop sign
- 4:02Speaker 1: extended and its lights flashing.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Stop.
- 4:06Speaker 5: That's for both directions. Behind the bus, if you're on
- 4:09Speaker 5: a multiple lane roadway, all traffic prevents in that area
- 4:13Speaker 5: where that bus has stopped, must stop. So that's super important.
- 4:16Speaker 5: We want to keep those kids safe. A lot of
- 4:18Speaker 5: them are going to be new bus riders, and it's
- 4:21Speaker 5: going to take a couple of days, even weeks, for
- 4:23Speaker 5: everyone to learn the rules of taking the bus safely,
- 4:26Speaker 5: crossing the roads on the crosswalk. So we want to
- 4:28Speaker 5: keep those kids safe and do our part.
- 4:31Speaker 1: The penalty for passing a school bus is six demerit
- 4:34Speaker 1: points and a ticket of up to $ 1, 200. Drivers are
- 4:38Speaker 1: also reminded to reduce their speeds in school zones and
- 4:42Speaker 1: pay attention to road signs and crossing guards. Expect a
- 4:45Speaker 1: heightened police presence on roads in and around school zones.
- 4:50Speaker 5: Our officers will be out in the school zone specifically
- 4:54Speaker 5: for the first day of school and going forward to
- 4:58Speaker 5: keep our eyes on the road to make sure everyone's
- 5:00Speaker 5: obeying those rules. But as motorists and drivers, it's our,
- 5:04Speaker 5: we have a duty to operate safely and get those
- 5:07Speaker 5: kids where they need to go safely.
- 5:09Speaker 1: That's your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
