Latest / HEAVY Music Interviews / Leaning Into Heavier Territory With DRUE HERRING From BAD JUJU
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I's drew from bad Juju. I'm the drummer.
- 0:06Speaker 2: We recently VP called Simulacra, which is probably our most
- 0:11Speaker 2: ambitious and heaviest for lease to date.
- 0:13Speaker 3: So yeah, fantastic bro, thanks for joining us all, thanks
- 0:19Speaker 3: having me as well. Rather so, as you say, bad
- 0:21Speaker 3: Juju released your latest EP, Simulacra, only a few days
- 0:25Speaker 3: back on October twenty four, so long, but how's the
- 0:28Speaker 3: only reception?
- 0:29Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, the reception has been great so far. So
- 0:33Speaker 2: obviously with this new EP, we kind of went back
- 0:37Speaker 2: to our heavier roots, seeing as where all come from
- 0:40Speaker 2: heavier bands, so it was nice to blend a little
- 0:44Speaker 2: bit of, you know, the the younger musicians taste that
- 0:49Speaker 2: we've been playing in previous bands before this into this
- 0:53Speaker 2: new body of work. So yeah, it's been great and yeah,
- 0:57Speaker 2: every show we've played, Yeah, and just the overall reception
- 1:02Speaker 2: has been very well received. So yeah, we're very very
- 1:06Speaker 2: happy with it.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Now, you mentioned the heavier direction you've taken race, Can
- 1:10Speaker 3: you could dive into that a bit deeper for us
- 1:12Speaker 3: musically and tell us what you're going for this time around?
- 1:15Speaker 2: So I guess, like as I mentioned, all of us
- 1:20Speaker 2: coming from heavier bands bands like you know, Link and
- 1:24Speaker 2: Park Limp, Biscuit Corn all that type of stuff is
- 1:30Speaker 2: music that all of us guys grew up on, so
- 1:33Speaker 2: we just kind of wanted to influence a little bit
- 1:36Speaker 2: of that type of sound towards what.
- 1:40Speaker 1: We were previously doing. And also just on the back
- 1:44Speaker 1: of that, just for the live shows.
- 1:47Speaker 2: As well, we always feel like those heavier types of songs,
- 1:51Speaker 2: a bit more energetic, bit more fast, just just an
- 1:56Speaker 2: overall better, better type of vibe.
- 1:58Speaker 3: So yeah, yeah, you mentioned that it's most ambitious body
- 2:02Speaker 3: you've a wad to date like now.
- 2:04Speaker 2: So well it's kind of just, yeah, just a lot
- 2:09Speaker 2: different to everything we've done in the past before. So
- 2:13Speaker 2: if you listen to our last record, Blue Heaven, there
- 2:17Speaker 2: was a couple of tracks that had, you know, a
- 2:22Speaker 2: couple of heavier parts in it, but yeah, this one's
- 2:26Speaker 2: at least four of the tracks mostly that new metal
- 2:31Speaker 2: type of vibe.
- 2:31Speaker 3: So yeah, so the has only got six songs on it, mate,
- 2:35Speaker 3: so we got time to run through all wonder time,
- 2:38Speaker 3: so we'll do that. We'll run from individually and just
- 2:40Speaker 3: tell us a bit more about the songs and how
- 2:43Speaker 3: they I guess, how they show Badhuji moving forward, So
- 2:47Speaker 3: we'll start with Clacra.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Yeah, so similar Cra the title track for the EP. Yeah,
- 2:54Speaker 2: that that obviously pays, you know, a bit of homage
- 2:58Speaker 2: to the old New Metal Link and Park type of vibes.
- 3:02Speaker 2: So yeah, that's kind of what we were going for
- 3:06Speaker 2: with that one. It's got a nice little breakdown in there.
- 3:08Speaker 2: It's got the nice groove as well.
- 3:11Speaker 3: So actually, on the subject of breakdowns, bro because I
- 3:15Speaker 3: can't play a music musical instrument of my life. But
- 3:19Speaker 3: with breakdowns in songs, who writes them? Does a guitarist
- 3:22Speaker 3: write them? What does a drummer write them? Or is
- 3:24Speaker 3: there no sort of no set way to do it.
- 3:26Speaker 1: No, there's not really a set way to do it.
- 3:29Speaker 1: The way that we write music is.
- 3:31Speaker 2: It's a lot of it comes from the guys on
- 3:35Speaker 2: the guitars.
- 3:36Speaker 1: First they kind of flesh out the songs.
- 3:38Speaker 2: And then and then we all come together as a
- 3:41Speaker 2: group and just iron everything out together.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Yeah, all right, So we'll move on to the next track,
- 3:47Speaker 3: which is Unwind Unwined.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Yeah, so that's that's more of a faster one.
- 3:53Speaker 2: We tried to blend a little bit of our older
- 3:55Speaker 2: sound into that one as well. But then obviously touching
- 4:00Speaker 2: on the new sound as well a little bit too.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Yeah, and then you've got Incision Incision.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Yeah, that's basically the same same viable going for as
- 4:12Speaker 2: with Simulacra.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Just some nice, nice catchy choruses.
- 4:18Speaker 2: And then some groovy verses and then yeah, just really
- 4:21Speaker 2: trying to go down that kind of new metal type
- 4:25Speaker 2: of yeah sound.
- 4:26Speaker 1: It's for me.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Everything was kind of written in the same well, with
- 4:32Speaker 2: the same ideas in mind, just to try and make
- 4:35Speaker 2: it flow for those heavier type of tracks.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Yeah, but by the sounds already, bro, like when you
- 4:40Speaker 3: said at the start of the interview that it's a
- 4:41Speaker 3: lot heavier and more ambitious, Like every song sounds like
- 4:45Speaker 3: it's gone down that road. So I reckon instead of
- 4:48Speaker 3: you describe them, Jimmy, people go and listen for themselves,
- 4:51Speaker 3: because that's the best way to find out about shit
- 4:53Speaker 3: in it.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely, definitely, everyone go check it out.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Yeah, this is just sort of indicative of the direction
- 5:00Speaker 3: Badges it's going to keep going in future, or is
- 5:02Speaker 3: it going to sort of change for every album.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Nah, this is kind of a new base for us.
- 5:06Speaker 2: It's a new start, so we're definitely still writing at
- 5:10Speaker 2: the moment, and everything's going down the path of what
- 5:13Speaker 2: was released on similar acra. Yeah, and if not a
- 5:17Speaker 2: little bit heavier as well.
- 5:19Speaker 3: It's actually very bold and ambitious from you guys, because say,
- 5:22Speaker 3: your debut album, Blue Heaven, came out in twenty twenty three,
- 5:25Speaker 3: and that was really well received. So it would have
- 5:28Speaker 3: been so easy for you just to play it safe
- 5:30Speaker 3: and do Blue Heaven Mark two, you know, because you
- 5:33Speaker 3: knew people like that. But you've gone heavier again, which
- 5:36Speaker 3: all predator, you bro like, So it's not taking the
- 5:39Speaker 3: safe option and sort of pushing yourself forward, which is good.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 5:43Speaker 2: I think we just wanted to write music that feels
- 5:46Speaker 2: a bit more natural to us as a collective. And yeah,
- 5:51Speaker 2: and the outcome of that has been similar ocra.
- 5:56Speaker 3: So you also released it on epes. I released Ething
- 5:59Speaker 3: on vinyl, like I remember talking to people a couple
- 6:02Speaker 3: of years ago. No, there's people there a bit of
- 6:04Speaker 3: whisper about vinyl coming back and shit, but no one
- 6:06Speaker 3: thought it really would. But it really has come back,
- 6:09Speaker 3: hasn't it. Yeah?
- 6:10Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely definitely, So it's yeah, it's been great. Yeah,
- 6:15Speaker 2: our friend our friends down at thirty two records. Yeah,
- 6:19Speaker 2: they got them pressed for us, so yeah, it's definitely
- 6:23Speaker 2: nice to be able to hold the physical copy in
- 6:25Speaker 2: their hands.
- 6:25Speaker 1: And yeah, vinyl was definitely coming back.
- 6:29Speaker 3: So are you limited edition thing or because they Yeah, yeah,
- 6:33Speaker 3: all those are definitely limited to one hundred pieces. So
- 6:37Speaker 3: where can people get themselves a copy before they all
- 6:39Speaker 3: go sailing out.
- 6:40Speaker 2: The door on thirty two records on their website? So yeah,
- 6:45Speaker 2: very limited to left so fancastic.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Now we've been talking about your sound, Roan, like if
- 6:51Speaker 3: you sort of break it down, bedges you sound it's
- 6:53Speaker 3: a blending of alternative metal, there's brung, it's new metal,
- 6:56Speaker 3: there's modern hardcore of it. In the creative process, how
- 7:00Speaker 3: hard is it to get the balance of all those right?
- 7:02Speaker 3: Like you wouldn't they wouldn't come together naturally? Would they?
- 7:06Speaker 1: Definitely? Not naturally?
- 7:09Speaker 2: But we just have multiple revisions on all of our tracks.
- 7:14Speaker 2: So for for similar acra like it's a it's a
- 7:17Speaker 2: six track EP. But there was a lot more demos demos,
- 7:22Speaker 2: so yeah, then we kind of just out out of
- 7:27Speaker 2: the whole how the whole crop of demos we've got,
- 7:30Speaker 2: Then we picked the select few and then from there
- 7:32Speaker 2: we just keep on refining.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Yeah, so how do you actually know when when you've
- 7:36Speaker 3: gone too far in one direction or not far enough another,
- 7:39Speaker 3: like if you got set cage it's all parameters or
- 7:42Speaker 3: is it all by feel?
- 7:44Speaker 1: It's all just by feel, all by feel.
- 7:46Speaker 2: And that's the thing being in a band, you know,
- 7:49Speaker 2: it's it's you know, myself and four other guys, so
- 7:52Speaker 2: we just bounce off each other. It's always good to
- 7:55Speaker 2: have multiple people's feedback on everything.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Very nice. Pray well. From what I know about you guys,
- 8:03Speaker 3: you would not be releasing an EP without hitting the raid.
- 8:05Speaker 3: So you've got your show's coming up.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Our final show for this year is.
- 8:11Speaker 2: This Friday where we've got our little EP release show
- 8:15Speaker 2: with Emo Never Sleep supporting House First Hurricane.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Then yeah, there's a lot more to come in the
- 8:22Speaker 1: in the in.
- 8:23Speaker 2: The new year. So looking for show this Friday whereabouts
- 8:28Speaker 2: Royal Marvin Hotel in the city for Emo Never Sleep.
- 8:31Speaker 3: So yeah, we'll hear that. Everyone out there if you
- 8:33Speaker 3: want to see Bead Judu in twenty twenty five, but
- 8:36Speaker 3: you get out of this Friday night and support the boys.
- 8:39Speaker 3: That's it, sweet As And the EP Sigma Lacra is
- 8:43Speaker 3: out now and it is a crack of guys. You
- 8:45Speaker 3: have over and above excel on this one. It's pretty
- 8:48Speaker 3: heavy as fucking plasis. So congratulations and I look forward
- 8:52Speaker 3: to hearing what comes out in the future.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Thank you very much mate,
