Latest / Birdland Territory / The Orioles put on a power display in a big win over Washington
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: It was a Sunday fun day for the Orioles as
- 0:09Speaker 1: their offense had a needed good performance seven runs as
- 0:15Speaker 1: they beat the Nationals seven to three, so the O's
- 0:17Speaker 1: avoid getting swept.
- 0:18Speaker 2: They win the finale of that series.
- 0:20Speaker 1: They had scored three runs their last eight times the
- 0:23Speaker 1: previous nine games. They got it going with the bats
- 0:26Speaker 1: today early lead and held it. The bullpen did another
- 0:29Speaker 1: good job and the Birds get the win the Birdland
- 0:32Speaker 1: Territory underway or where we're taping Sunday after the Orioles
- 0:36Speaker 1: beat the Nationals and guys, it just feels good to win,
- 0:39Speaker 1: I mean the Nationals. It's a rivalry, right, the Orioles
- 0:42Speaker 1: and their fans don't like to lose to the fans
- 0:45Speaker 1: to the South, and the Nationals were very licking their
- 0:48Speaker 1: chops to sweep the series, which they didn't get. So again,
- 0:52Speaker 1: not the weekend they wanted, but at least a good
- 0:55Speaker 1: ending to it.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely, it's still just the consistency.
- 1:00Speaker 4: It's there, It's just not seen it on a consistent
- 1:04Speaker 4: series of series.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Game the game basis, and.
- 1:07Speaker 4: You know, taking today's game definitely helps take some of
- 1:09Speaker 4: the sting of losing the series away. But I definitely
- 1:12Speaker 4: would have liked to see him win two out of three.
- 1:14Speaker 4: You know, a couple of bounces here, there, a couple
- 1:16Speaker 4: at home run from called foul by Mayo yesterday, you
- 1:20Speaker 4: just never know's. It seemed like it was one play
- 1:23Speaker 4: away from either winning possibly sweeping the series. So it
- 1:25Speaker 4: was a tightly contested series. But glad to see them
- 1:29Speaker 4: get the win today and have some momentum heading down
- 1:32Speaker 4: to Tampa, which is going to be a tough series
- 1:34Speaker 4: against the race.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Definitely big to win today. They needed it today.
- 1:40Speaker 5: But like you said, Brad, just overall disappointing. We still
- 1:46Speaker 5: have yet to see this team win back to back
- 1:49Speaker 5: series in more than a month now. At this point,
- 1:53Speaker 5: they just haven't been able to sustain that type of
- 1:55Speaker 5: momentum and I was hoping and today the offense certainly
- 2:00Speaker 5: broke out of it and scored in the first four
- 2:02Speaker 5: innings of that ballgame.
- 2:03Speaker 2: But heading into the series, and that's had the second worst.
- 2:07Speaker 6: Team e er in baseball and the old they were
- 2:10Speaker 6: getting shut out into the ninth inning. On Friday, Zach Lttel,
- 2:14Speaker 6: he had one of his best starts of his season.
- 2:17Speaker 6: He was really scuffling coming in and then yesterday just
- 2:21Speaker 6: really got away from them. You know, it was a
- 2:24Speaker 6: rare bullpen implosion, but today it was nice. Kind Kevin
- 2:29Speaker 6: Brown made that comment. It was sort of the inverse
- 2:31Speaker 6: of a typical Orioles game. They're scoring all their runs
- 2:34Speaker 6: early and then you know, had that tack on run.
- 2:37Speaker 2: I'm late, so we saw today a quick hook.
- 2:43Speaker 1: I thought that now six to two, the Oils were leading.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Brandon Young has been pretty good this year. Is pitching
- 2:49Speaker 1: in the fourth inning. Bottom of the fourth, bases are loaded,
- 2:52Speaker 1: two outs, it's six to two, So one big swing
- 2:55Speaker 1: there and the Nats are right back in it.
- 2:58Speaker 2: And so it was a fourth.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Inning highlight everage situation of sorts, a team that doesn't
- 3:03Speaker 1: want to get swept and really is desperately in need
- 3:05Speaker 1: of wins. I think that's the way albern has managed
- 3:08Speaker 1: that spot there. And he went to Nuniez, who had
- 3:11Speaker 1: not pitched before the sixth inning this year until today,
- 3:14Speaker 1: and he got a big strike out. Then he got
- 3:16Speaker 1: three more outs and the bullpen was good again. Brad,
- 3:20Speaker 1: what did you think of the early move to go
- 3:22Speaker 1: get Nuniez.
- 3:23Speaker 4: Yeah, I thought it was aggressive when I saw Nunya's
- 3:26Speaker 4: a woman, up there. I was thinking, they can't be
- 3:29Speaker 4: going to him already. They got they got to get
- 3:30Speaker 4: through the fourth at least here before they.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Go to him or something like that, But it worked out.
- 3:35Speaker 4: I think it just goes to show the aggressionive, the
- 3:37Speaker 4: aggressive this that Albernaz has, and I think he sees
- 3:41Speaker 4: where the season's heading it. June is coming fast and
- 3:44Speaker 4: they need wins, and I think you can't worry about
- 3:46Speaker 4: tomorrow as much as trying to win today's game. And
- 3:49Speaker 4: that was a big spot there. I think if you're
- 3:51Speaker 4: going to bring a high leverage reliever in whether it's
- 3:54Speaker 4: the fourth or the sixth inning, it doesn't make a
- 3:56Speaker 4: huge difference. When you have Tyler Wells, I can throw
- 3:58Speaker 4: multiple innings. So I think that was kind of his
- 4:00Speaker 4: thinking there, that they had guys who had some rest
- 4:03Speaker 4: and could give them some length. So he thought that
- 4:05Speaker 4: was a big spot in the game, and he was right.
- 4:07Speaker 4: If they let them back in the game that you
- 4:09Speaker 4: just never know how the game is going to turn.
- 4:11Speaker 4: The Nationals could go to their bullpen and get Michaelis
- 4:13Speaker 4: out of there, but it was a good move on him.
- 4:16Speaker 4: It worked out well and bullpen threw really well again today.
- 4:20Speaker 6: It was a really, really bold move, but that told
- 4:23Speaker 6: you everything that you needed to know in terms of
- 4:25Speaker 6: the importance of this game for Craig Albernas where you
- 4:29Speaker 6: don't really worry about tomorrow in this instance where you're
- 4:33Speaker 6: going up against a really tough Raised team. But the
- 4:35Speaker 6: good thing is a lot of those guys really hadn't
- 4:38Speaker 6: pitched in a few days. You know, we hadn't seen
- 4:41Speaker 6: Nunez in a couple of days. Rico Garcia as well.
- 4:44Speaker 6: The bullpen was absolutely nails, and that was a basis
- 4:48Speaker 6: loaded two out situation where the Nats were one swing
- 4:51Speaker 6: of the bad away from tying that ball game.
- 4:53Speaker 2: So for Nunez to get out of it, that was critical.
- 4:59Speaker 1: You want to hear misleading statistic. The Oriel bullpen, with
- 5:02Speaker 1: a four to four six ERA ranks twenty first in
- 5:06Speaker 1: Major League Baseball. Any fan looking up that stat is
- 5:10Speaker 1: going to think, ah, the Ools bullpen is mid. Well,
- 5:14Speaker 1: there's been four or five blow ups which changed the
- 5:16Speaker 1: whole picture of that era for the year, and all
- 5:19Speaker 1: those of us on this set and those watching, most
- 5:22Speaker 1: of which have been watching all year, No, they're not
- 5:25Speaker 1: the twenty first best bullpen. That that's a couple nine
- 5:28Speaker 1: run blow ups. They had a ten run blow up
- 5:30Speaker 1: the one day that position player pitch that counts towards
- 5:33Speaker 1: these bullpen stats. So they've been good. And here's another
- 5:37Speaker 1: stat where they were good, and they were today Nunez.
- 5:39Speaker 1: There standing three inherited runners. The Ools are second best
- 5:44Speaker 1: in MLB. That is a really big stat for any bullpen. Brad,
- 5:48Speaker 1: you of all of us, know that inherited runners this
- 5:52Speaker 1: year eighteen percent have scored. Only Seattle is better twelve percent,
- 5:56Speaker 1: and the Oils were twenty seven percent last year. Decidedly
- 5:59Speaker 1: better than last year, decidedly better than most of the
- 6:02Speaker 1: league this year.
- 6:04Speaker 4: Yeah, and it's it's a huge stat. I think it's
- 6:07Speaker 4: one of those ones that really doesn't get enough attention.
- 6:09Speaker 4: I think that's the difference between wins and losses. When
- 6:11Speaker 4: you let runners on base, you come in out of
- 6:13Speaker 4: the bullpen, you let in those runs. Those are wins
- 6:15Speaker 4: and that's where the losses come from. When you when
- 6:18Speaker 4: you strand the runners, you have a better chance to win.
- 6:20Speaker 4: If you give up those runs, you just never know
- 6:22Speaker 4: where the game is going to go from there. If
- 6:23Speaker 4: nu Nia said come in, given up two, the game
- 6:26Speaker 4: goes to six to four, and you just have no
- 6:27Speaker 4: idea how the game is going to play out. But
- 6:29Speaker 4: he came in, stopped it immediately, took all the momentum away.
- 6:32Speaker 3: Put it back in the Oriols dugout and those were huge.
- 6:35Speaker 4: And it's very contagious on I've been on bullpens who've
- 6:37Speaker 4: been really good at holding runners, inherited runners, and bullpens
- 6:41Speaker 4: that have been very bad at it, and it's contagious
- 6:43Speaker 4: one way or the other.
- 6:44Speaker 3: This team is just really good at keeping a.
- 6:47Speaker 4: Level head when they come out with runners on base
- 6:49Speaker 4: and they're inherited runners especially, and just getting out of
- 6:52Speaker 4: those big jams, and it's it's been really big this year.
- 6:54Speaker 4: We've seen Rico Garcia get at base load of jams
- 6:57Speaker 4: multiple times.
- 6:58Speaker 3: Now Nunia is stepping up there.
- 6:59Speaker 4: It's been a really big added on bonus from this
- 7:04Speaker 4: bullpen this year.
- 7:06Speaker 6: Yeah, and Brad take us into the mind of a
- 7:09Speaker 6: reliever in that situation like Nuna's coming in bases loaded,
- 7:13Speaker 6: two outs. That was such a huge turning point in
- 7:15Speaker 6: the game, like did you prefer.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Coming in with a clean inning? Did you mind coming
- 7:20Speaker 2: in in the middle of an inning.
- 7:23Speaker 3: It's funny that Nunez came in today.
- 7:25Speaker 4: In that situation when I was a rookie with San Diego,
- 7:27Speaker 4: that's all I did. I came in with runners on base,
- 7:29Speaker 4: whether it was the sixth, seventh, eighth inning.
- 7:31Speaker 3: It was like my role.
- 7:32Speaker 4: They never told me that, but I mean I had
- 7:34Speaker 4: forty five inherited runners that year, and I think I
- 7:36Speaker 4: led in.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Like three or four.
- 7:38Speaker 4: It just became like a closer mentality for me. It
- 7:40Speaker 4: was like I gave up all my own runs and
- 7:43Speaker 4: I would save everybody else's runs and I had to pitches.
- 7:46Speaker 4: Coaches tell me, hey, Brock, you know it's okay to
- 7:48Speaker 4: not letting your own runs, right, you can save yourself
- 7:50Speaker 4: someone in your era.
- 7:51Speaker 3: But it was just it.
- 7:52Speaker 4: When I was in the minor leagues, I was a
- 7:54Speaker 4: closer and it kind of gave me that same rush
- 7:56Speaker 4: I had in the minor leagues when I come in
- 7:58Speaker 4: with inheron runners and get out of a big jam.
- 8:00Speaker 4: It was just one of those things where I got
- 8:01Speaker 4: comfortable doing it, and then there was other seasons where
- 8:04Speaker 4: I was bad at it. So it was just kind
- 8:05Speaker 4: of one of those things where it was when you
- 8:07Speaker 4: came in with arms on base, you kind of got
- 8:09Speaker 4: that extra adrenaline rush, and it was almost like a
- 8:11Speaker 4: closing mentality when you came in those games.
- 8:15Speaker 1: It's so crazy to watch you arol bullpen. There's been
- 8:18Speaker 1: these nights where it's a blow up, but most nights
- 8:20Speaker 1: it's not. And so that's been a really tough thing
- 8:23Speaker 1: when you look at the statute for these guys. But
- 8:25Speaker 1: we know what Garcia has been doing, we know what
- 8:28Speaker 1: Nunez has been doing. You're near Cano. We probably don't
- 8:31Speaker 1: talk about him as much the sinkers back. I mean,
- 8:34Speaker 1: there are guys doing some special things. Hell's least out
- 8:38Speaker 1: they're doing this without the guy who's supposed to be
- 8:40Speaker 1: doing the heavy lifting in the ninth tim and we
- 8:43Speaker 1: won't see him for a couple of weeks. It doesn't
- 8:44Speaker 1: sound like.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I saw he just started throwing.
- 8:48Speaker 6: I believe on Friday was when Michael aias kieve those
- 8:52Speaker 6: updates on the several injured guys.
- 8:54Speaker 2: But you're so right, Steve.
- 8:56Speaker 6: You know, anyone that doesn't watch this team on a
- 8:59Speaker 6: daily basis a fan of another team. You see that eera,
- 9:03Speaker 6: you think, okay, well we get to the bullpen, you
- 9:05Speaker 6: know we can really make hey. But Brad, it's something
- 9:08Speaker 6: that you've been saying repeatedly throughout this season, you want
- 9:12Speaker 6: to see this bullpen pitch with a lead because you
- 9:16Speaker 6: think of the guys that they threw today. Nunez is
- 9:20Speaker 6: Nails and high leverage situations. It's great that Tyler Wells
- 9:23Speaker 6: is back and his ability to go multiple innings.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Steve's absolutely right near Cano looks like the All.
- 9:29Speaker 6: Star you near Cano back in twenty twenty three, and
- 9:33Speaker 6: then Rico Garcie it like all of these guys you
- 9:37Speaker 6: feel really confident throwing out there in high leverage situations.
- 9:41Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it kind of goes back to the
- 9:43Speaker 4: conversation we've had about the consistency just getting consistent leads.
- 9:47Speaker 4: I would love to see this bullpen get consistent leads
- 9:50Speaker 4: and just see how much of a run they can
- 9:52Speaker 4: go on keeping these leads and getting these wins and
- 9:54Speaker 4: shutting down games, because it really becomes such a mental
- 9:57Speaker 4: advantage when you start seeing a team run on five, six,
- 10:00Speaker 4: seven close wins in a row, knowing it's the bullpen
- 10:03Speaker 4: that's shutting it down. They come in town, they know
- 10:06Speaker 4: they got to get the lead. If it gets to
- 10:07Speaker 4: the fifth inning, it gets late. Like I've mentioned multiple times,
- 10:10Speaker 4: the teams I played for in Baltimore.
- 10:12Speaker 3: I always felt that the pressure.
- 10:14Speaker 4: On the other team they needed to get a lead,
- 10:15Speaker 4: because if it got to our bullpen late with the lead,
- 10:18Speaker 4: the game was over and you could feel the pressure
- 10:20Speaker 4: and you could feel the almost it was like despair.
- 10:24Speaker 4: Come second or third game, it's like, hey, we got behind,
- 10:26Speaker 4: it's a close game, but they get to the bullpen
- 10:28Speaker 4: and we just had so many different arms and angles
- 10:30Speaker 4: and you know where we were coming from, you know,
- 10:33Speaker 4: Darren ol Day from down low, Michael Gibbons from the side,
- 10:36Speaker 4: just all these different looks that we gave them, and
- 10:38Speaker 4: it was just you could just feel it from the
- 10:40Speaker 4: other team.
- 10:41Speaker 3: The pressure.
- 10:41Speaker 4: And I feel like this team could be very similar.
- 10:43Speaker 4: If they get leads early, they're gonna hold them late.
- 10:46Speaker 4: And I would just love to see a two week
- 10:48Speaker 4: consistent get ahead and shut these teams down and really
- 10:51Speaker 4: start putting the pressure on the opponents.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Yeah, six to one lead in the fourth today, pitching
- 10:55Speaker 1: made it stand up. That was big for the Orioles
- 10:58Speaker 1: as they take the series. For now, Hey, those fans,

- 11:41Speaker 1: going to touch on that later in the show. But
- 11:44Speaker 1: next bit of a homer barrage today, we haven't even

- 12:52Speaker 1: You know it's about a week ago in the oil
- 12:54Speaker 1: clubhouse where Gunner Henderson fell on the sword in a
- 12:57Speaker 1: one on one interview I did with him for my
- 13:00Speaker 1: substack and said, I just have been bad for a month.
- 13:02Speaker 1: This can't keep happening. I keep busting my butt to
- 13:05Speaker 1: turn it around. Felt he was starting to see the
- 13:08Speaker 1: ball better. Some hits keen but not in bunches, and
- 13:11Speaker 1: then midweek a couple offers again. But today four for
- 13:15Speaker 1: five two RBIs he hit number ten. His ops is
- 13:19Speaker 1: six ninety two. Okay, not great, but league average is
- 13:22Speaker 1: slow seven hundred, so he's getting closer to average. We
- 13:25Speaker 1: know he's gonna both be above average when it's over.
- 13:28Speaker 1: At least we certainly feel that. And Guy's seventeen games
- 13:32Speaker 1: without a homer. That's a long drought for a power hitter,
- 13:35Speaker 1: especially Gunner got one today. I hope this is a
- 13:38Speaker 1: turning point for and I hope the slow trend up
- 13:41Speaker 1: and it's been slow, picks up a little bit.
- 13:46Speaker 3: Yeah. I really like seeing that.
- 13:47Speaker 4: It was a down and in pitch, the one that
- 13:49Speaker 4: we discussed a couple of weeks ago in Miami.
- 13:52Speaker 3: He was really struggling and getting to that pitch.
- 13:53Speaker 4: At least that's what I saw if I was doing
- 13:55Speaker 4: a skytting report against him. But he pulled his hands
- 13:58Speaker 4: in today, perfect on that ball, got it into right
- 14:00Speaker 4: field upper deck and really just jump started this offense.
- 14:03Speaker 4: And then after the game, it was really interesting. Didn't
- 14:06Speaker 4: have a ton of words about it, but basically he
- 14:07Speaker 4: was just talking about how he's trying to get back
- 14:09Speaker 4: to being up the middle, and he's been talking about
- 14:11Speaker 4: he's been trying to get ten hits with one hit
- 14:14Speaker 4: every bat and it's just kind of letting the game
- 14:16Speaker 4: come to him. And I think that's what you saw today.
- 14:18Speaker 4: He was able to take his base hits up the
- 14:20Speaker 4: middle when the pitches presented itself, and then the first
- 14:23Speaker 4: thing he got a pitch to drive and he didn't
- 14:25Speaker 4: miss it. And that's basically what hot hitters do, is
- 14:27Speaker 4: when you get that pitch you can't miss, you hit
- 14:29Speaker 4: it out, or you hit it double, or you hit
- 14:31Speaker 4: it really hard somewhere. And that's what we're starting to
- 14:33Speaker 4: see from Gunner. I'm hoping that this is the start
- 14:35Speaker 4: of a really hot month six weeks because when he's going,
- 14:39Speaker 4: I feel like he can really carry the offense by
- 14:41Speaker 4: himself and then you let the other guys at the
- 14:43Speaker 4: bottom of the lineup, you know, cows are today with
- 14:45Speaker 4: a nice homer and guys putting the ball in play
- 14:47Speaker 4: and getting guys on base, and just he can just
- 14:50Speaker 4: carry an offense for six weeks at a time.
- 14:52Speaker 6: I feel like, hey, Gunner Henderson, when he's his best,
- 14:55Speaker 6: he's an aircraft carrier man, like he is that force
- 14:59Speaker 6: multiplier for this team. And the one hit really exemplified
- 15:04Speaker 6: Gunner Henderson to me up the middle where he turns
- 15:07Speaker 6: a single into a double running into the face of
- 15:10Speaker 6: that center fielder. It was just a heck of a play.
- 15:13Speaker 6: He gets up, he starts screaming and yelling. He's an
- 15:15Speaker 6: electric factory when he's at his best. And look, you
- 15:19Speaker 6: can look over the course of his career outside of
- 15:22Speaker 6: twenty twenty four, where he was an MVP candidate in
- 15:25Speaker 6: the first half of the season, he has gotten off
- 15:28Speaker 6: a little slow. Heck, Steve, I'm sure you remember the
- 15:31Speaker 6: cries from fans in twenty twenty three, Oh, you need
- 15:34Speaker 6: to send Gunner down when he was, you know, batting
- 15:36Speaker 6: below the Mendoza line in May.
- 15:39Speaker 2: Last year, dealing with the injury, and then this year.
- 15:41Speaker 6: But we're about to get the June and June is
- 15:45Speaker 6: Gunner Henderson's best month.
- 15:47Speaker 2: When you look at his career splits.
- 15:49Speaker 6: He has an ops of one thousand in seventy five
- 15:53Speaker 6: career games in the month of June three point thirty
- 15:57Speaker 6: one batting average, both of those by far and away
- 16:01Speaker 6: his best month. So you'd like to see him continue
- 16:03Speaker 6: to trend upwards as we approached the month to gym.
- 16:09Speaker 1: And you know, he's on the pace for every two
- 16:11Speaker 1: hundred strikeouts, and I think that's gonna come down and
- 16:13Speaker 1: normalize for him as we go. But when he was
- 16:16Speaker 1: piling him up there a couple of weeks ago, he's
- 16:19Speaker 1: really chasing. His timing was really off. I'm when I
- 16:23Speaker 1: see Gunner strike out, but he's on the pitch, but
- 16:26Speaker 1: the pitcher just made a great pitch. That's when I know, Okay,
- 16:29Speaker 1: he's timing is good. He's squaring up balls. He hit
- 16:33Speaker 1: some balls very, very hard this weekend. I see him
- 16:36Speaker 1: trending up, and I'm again, I'm gonna eat these words.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Maybe he might have to, but I just see it coming,
- 16:42Speaker 1: and tim maybe you're right to you and is gonna
- 16:44Speaker 1: be it. And Gunner will feel good about this game today,
- 16:48Speaker 1: and the Rays have a good, good everything, so they'll
- 16:51Speaker 1: pitch him tough. You know they will. But hopefully, Brad,
- 16:54Speaker 1: you ride some momentum. Baseball man. You're only as good though,
- 16:57Speaker 1: as the next days starting pitcher.
- 16:59Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 17:00Speaker 4: And I think you know, with six games here against
- 17:03Speaker 4: the Rays in the next nine, it'd be a great
- 17:05Speaker 4: time for Gunner to get going and get as hot
- 17:07Speaker 4: as he can because you know they're gonna have good pitching.
- 17:10Speaker 4: You know they're gonna play good defense. It's what the
- 17:12Speaker 4: Rays do. They're like the team that's there every single year.
- 17:15Speaker 4: Nobody wants to talk about them, and they just are
- 17:17Speaker 4: always winning baseball games, especially at the trop too. It's
- 17:20Speaker 4: I always enjoyed playing there because it felt very neutral,
- 17:23Speaker 4: not a big crowd. It's really there's been a lot
- 17:25Speaker 4: of O's fans there. So it's kind of get going here.
- 17:29Speaker 4: Use this game as momentum. Let's use some of that
- 17:31Speaker 4: to carry over. Like we've been talking about. I feel
- 17:34Speaker 4: like it's been six, seven, eight weeks now we've been
- 17:36Speaker 4: talking about winning a series. But can they carry it over?
- 17:38Speaker 4: They beat the Yankees, they couldn't carry it over to Washington.
- 17:41Speaker 4: Let's let's hope that they can use the win today,
- 17:44Speaker 4: carry the momentum into Tampa. Take two or three there,
- 17:46Speaker 4: come back home, and just get out a roll here.
- 17:48Speaker 4: Because the pieces are there's we see it when you
- 17:52Speaker 4: watch this team every day.
- 17:53Speaker 3: There's so much talent.
- 17:54Speaker 4: We've talked about that, but the pieces all aren't lining up.
- 17:57Speaker 4: You just got to hope in these next couple of
- 17:59Speaker 4: weeks here everything starts lining up and you can put
- 18:01Speaker 4: together a ten out of twelve or ten out of
- 18:04Speaker 4: fourteen stretch and really get back in the hunt.
- 18:07Speaker 6: Yeah, you gotta start stringing together some series wins. I mean,
- 18:11Speaker 6: they've only won back to back series just one time
- 18:13Speaker 6: all year. And we've been talking about the schedule for
- 18:16Speaker 6: weeks now. Guys, where you said it, Brad that the
- 18:18Speaker 6: Ray's best team in the American League.
- 18:20Speaker 2: You're seeing them.
- 18:21Speaker 6: Twice in the next week, and then at the end
- 18:23Speaker 6: of the month, the Blue Jays come to town, and then
- 18:25Speaker 6: the Red Sox and Blue Jays again. There's so many
- 18:28Speaker 6: division games where it's great. We know that the American
- 18:33Speaker 6: League there's a lot of parody going on and everyone's
- 18:36Speaker 6: in it.
- 18:36Speaker 2: No one's out of it.
- 18:37Speaker 6: But you gotta start building some positive momentum and sustaining it.
- 18:42Speaker 2: That's the key.
- 18:45Speaker 1: So, guys, I went down the rabbit hole Saturday night. Jim,
- 18:49Speaker 1: you should have called and cut me off of the pass.
- 18:50Speaker 1: When I go onto Twitter, oh, I make a couple
- 18:53Speaker 1: of comments and the next thing you know, I got
- 18:56Speaker 1: five hundred fans. I feel like they're gonna be with Pitchforks.
- 19:00Speaker 1: It's on my front door looking to make sure I'm okay.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Whenever I'm trying to get to the car.
- 19:04Speaker 1: So that was probably not the best choice I could
- 19:08Speaker 1: have made. But when the season is the one thing
- 19:11Speaker 1: I'll say about myself, I'll give myself the miles pound
- 19:14Speaker 1: on the back. I don't avoid when it's going bad,
- 19:16Speaker 1: I'm going to talk about it, and I'll give you
- 19:18Speaker 1: my opinion. I'm sixty six. I've been doing this too
- 19:21Speaker 1: long to shy away or play it safe. I'm not crazy.
- 19:24Speaker 1: I'm not looking for clicks, but I'll give at this point,
- 19:27Speaker 1: I'll give my opinion, and if I'm wrong, I'm wrong.
- 19:30Speaker 1: It's baseball. We're all going to get up tomorrow and
- 19:32Speaker 1: breathe and see the sun. So let's talk about this
- 19:36Speaker 1: aspect of that comment. It's an anniversary today. I'm not
- 19:40Speaker 1: thrilled to note Brandon Hyde was fired a year ago
- 19:43Speaker 1: today on May seventeenth, twenty twenty five.
- 19:45Speaker 2: I really liked the guy.
- 19:46Speaker 1: I thought he did a great job taking the oil
- 19:48Speaker 1: from one hundred and fifteen losses to the Al East title.
- 19:51Speaker 1: I thought he got a bad deal then and it
- 19:53Speaker 1: probably still is. But look that happened.
- 19:55Speaker 2: He moved on.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Everybody's moved on, and I think Craig Albert as it's
- 19:59Speaker 1: going to prove to be be good here. But one
- 20:02Speaker 1: year later, the organization is still not in a great place.
- 20:05Speaker 1: While they won seventy five last year, the current pace
- 20:09Speaker 1: has seventy two this year, so they're not pushing forward yet.
- 20:13Speaker 1: They've signed players and right now, guys, you know, it's
- 20:17Speaker 1: falling to Elias. They changed managers, they've changed coaches, they
- 20:21Speaker 1: change some players, but Mike is still here and he's
- 20:24Speaker 1: bearing the brunt right now, and at the end of
- 20:26Speaker 1: this year, if it goes south, it could be bad
- 20:29Speaker 1: for him. I don't know, who knows how this will
- 20:31Speaker 1: play out. He has support of his owner right now,
- 20:34Speaker 1: strong support. But right now the fans are honree and
- 20:37Speaker 1: the organization's got to get it going. But we're a
- 20:39Speaker 1: broken record and saying that, I feel like, as.
- 20:41Speaker 3: Well, yeah, you know what it is.
- 20:45Speaker 4: I think too, They've had so many we talked about
- 20:47Speaker 4: in previous episodes, with all the publications and the prospects
- 20:50Speaker 4: and all these names they come up, and I feel
- 20:54Speaker 4: like they haven't had outside of the top guys. I
- 20:57Speaker 4: feel like they haven't had the production from those aspects
- 21:00Speaker 4: that they've talked about.
- 21:01Speaker 3: In the minor leagues. It's they they're.
- 21:03Speaker 4: Good major league players, but they haven't had these, you know,
- 21:06Speaker 4: other worthy seasons where they're helping the team win on
- 21:09Speaker 4: a consistent basis. And I feel like a lot of
- 21:11Speaker 4: that has kind of come down on the lias because
- 21:15Speaker 4: you have all these prospects and now you can't win.
- 21:16Speaker 4: Look at the roster you're signing guys, and that's just
- 21:19Speaker 4: kind of the nature of sports, especially today with so
- 21:22Speaker 4: many outlets to give your opinion and have all these
- 21:25Speaker 4: Like you said, Steve, you know these guys from this
- 21:27Speaker 4: time they sign when they're sixteen till the time they
- 21:29Speaker 4: come up and it's man, they're twenty.
- 21:31Speaker 3: Four years old. How come they haven't figured it out yet?
- 21:33Speaker 3: What was this organization doing?
- 21:34Speaker 4: So a lot of times I feel like it's that,
- 21:36Speaker 4: But at the same time, I'm always like it's called
- 21:39Speaker 4: prospect for a reason, you know, like when you get
- 21:41Speaker 4: not every prospect becomes a true major leaguer. There's a
- 21:44Speaker 4: lot of guys who have good careers, but there's a
- 21:46Speaker 4: lot of prospects who get a couple of coffee who
- 21:48Speaker 4: who played just a couple of seasons, who which is
- 21:51Speaker 4: nothing wrong with that, but it's that to me, that
- 21:54Speaker 4: was always what they talked about was They're called prospect
- 21:56Speaker 4: for a reason, and I guess someone's got to take
- 21:58Speaker 4: the fall for but hopefully it's not Alison.
- 22:00Speaker 3: I hope that.
- 22:01Speaker 4: I feel like he has finally stocked a lot of
- 22:03Speaker 4: talent in this organization. But when you start signing guys
- 22:06Speaker 4: like Pete Alonzo and you fortify the rotation, you make
- 22:10Speaker 4: some of these trades, and you're still kind of in
- 22:12Speaker 4: the same spot you were a year ago. When you
- 22:14Speaker 4: fire the manager, there's going to be a lot of
- 22:16Speaker 4: people wondering what's happening and what needs to change.
- 22:21Speaker 6: I get the fans frustrations, man, I get, and sometimes
- 22:24Speaker 6: it goes overboard and it gets crazy and personal and
- 22:27Speaker 6: all of that. But you know, this team won one
- 22:30Speaker 6: hundred and one games in twenty twenty three and unfortunately
- 22:34Speaker 6: has gone backwards each season since then. And this was
- 22:39Speaker 6: always going to be such a massive year for this team,
- 22:43Speaker 6: this organization for so many reasons. And when Brandon High
- 22:48Speaker 6: got fired a year ago, today, Michael Isias said that,
- 22:51Speaker 6: you know, he did a lot of introspection and how
- 22:54Speaker 6: they were operating, how they handle things, and I was
- 22:57Speaker 6: really interested in seeing how he was going to go
- 22:59Speaker 6: about this offseason. And he was much more aggressive. They
- 23:03Speaker 6: were making moves out of the gate. They did sign
- 23:07Speaker 6: Pete Alonzo, you know, first mega contract given out to
- 23:10Speaker 6: a free agent by Michael Olias. We have seen him
- 23:13Speaker 6: more aggressive in terms of extensions. We saw that with
- 23:17Speaker 6: Samuel Bassio later on last season, we saw it with
- 23:21Speaker 6: Boz this season. So there's been a lot of difference
- 23:26Speaker 6: in how Michaelias has been operating. But unfortunately it hasn't
- 23:33Speaker 6: really bear much fruit in terms of the on field
- 23:37Speaker 6: product because being five games under five hundred on May seventeenth,
- 23:42Speaker 6: no one's happy about that. Mike's not happy about it,
- 23:44Speaker 6: the players aren't happy about it, the fans aren't happy
- 23:46Speaker 6: about it. You know, you can look at it so
- 23:50Speaker 6: many different ways, Steve where Yeah, they're still in the mix,
- 23:53Speaker 6: that's good, But gosh, if they did get off to
- 23:55Speaker 6: a good start and you built that cushion, you know,
- 24:04Speaker 6: the build a continued chase. So it's gonna be interesting
- 24:08Speaker 6: to see how this season continues to play out, and
- 24:11Speaker 6: especially for the young guys. Going back to what Brad
- 24:14Speaker 6: was saying, you know, I think this season was really
- 24:16Speaker 6: going to determine a lot in terms of Okay, are
- 24:19Speaker 6: you more like the twenty twenty five guy that you
- 24:22Speaker 6: were or you know, was it before that? And at
- 24:26Speaker 6: Lea's proven that he has gotten back to that twenty
- 24:29Speaker 6: twenty three first half of twenty twenty four version. What
- 24:32Speaker 6: is the rest of this season entail for Colden cows Er?
- 24:35Speaker 6: Is he going to prove to be more of that
- 24:37Speaker 6: second finishing second and rookie of the year or is
- 24:41Speaker 6: last year kind of like all of these guys you know,
- 24:45Speaker 6: are going to answer these questions one way or another
- 24:49Speaker 6: this season for me?
- 24:50Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. And when you judge at GM, any sport
- 24:52Speaker 1: a team, how do you judge it? You judge your signings.
- 24:57Speaker 1: Are they underperforming? Are players who are forming last year?
- 25:00Speaker 1: Not now? Rico Garcia's got an O forty seven e
- 25:03Speaker 1: RA wow, But Andrew Kittridge is ten eighty. Chris Bassett
- 25:08Speaker 1: he did last year, Look what he's done this year.
- 25:10Speaker 1: Gunnar Henderson, is that on Michael las Now? Some fans
- 25:13Speaker 1: will say, Steve, yes, he's the head, is the top
- 25:17Speaker 1: of the food chain. Everything that happens is on his watch,
- 25:20Speaker 1: and I think he would agree with that. So my
- 25:22Speaker 1: point is, I think it's too soon to harshly judge him.
- 25:26Speaker 1: Although many fans are arts. They're right, but I think
- 25:29Speaker 1: this season will not be too soon. We'll see where
- 25:32Speaker 1: it goes. They've got to save it somehow, some way, guys,
- 25:35Speaker 1: and we'll be here to detail every fun aspect of
- 25:39Speaker 1: that along the way on to Tampa Bay for the Orioles.
- 25:43Speaker 1: We'll touch you on that in a moment here on
- 25:44Speaker 1: the Birdland Territory.
- 25:48Speaker 8: Big Bed Morning Show Finny and Hany Inside Access Live
- 25:53Speaker 8: on YouTube weekdays six till six, Search Baltimore one, five,
- 25:57Speaker 8: seven the Fan. Subscribe for daily shorts right and never missed,
- 26:01Speaker 8: which have missed.
- 26:03Speaker 2: Seven the fan.
- 26:05Speaker 1: Well, they are doing it again. Tampa Bay is the
- 26:08Speaker 1: first place team in the AL East. We've seen this
- 26:11Speaker 1: act before thirty and fifteen. They won today. They're eighteen
- 26:16Speaker 1: and four their last twenty two games. They're sixteen and
- 26:19Speaker 1: five at home. They're ten and two against the AL East.
- 26:22Speaker 1: What don't they do well? Draw fans? I know, smart
- 26:25Speaker 1: Alec would say, but they're beating everybody and the Oil's
- 26:29Speaker 1: got to go in there and figure out a way
- 26:31Speaker 1: to get some wins.
- 26:33Speaker 4: Yeah, that's that's pretty much what it is. I think it's,
- 26:36Speaker 4: like I said, it's been Tampa's been doing the same
- 26:38Speaker 4: thing forever.
- 26:39Speaker 3: It's they might have one down year, but they have
- 26:41Speaker 3: four up years.
- 26:42Speaker 4: Out of every five. It seems like in the last
- 26:44Speaker 4: fifteen twenty years. It's somehow it's gonna be, you know,
- 26:47Speaker 4: Tampa's gonna come back to, you know, what we expect
- 26:50Speaker 4: of them to be, and next thing, you know, they're
- 26:52Speaker 4: right there in the division. Now they've been playing unbelievable
- 26:55Speaker 4: baseball here these last few weeks. It's just kind of,
- 26:58Speaker 4: you know, just boat racing teams and getting out front.
- 27:00Speaker 3: Of the Yankees.
- 27:01Speaker 4: And you know, when we were doing the series of
- 27:03Speaker 4: the Yankees, I just assumed the Yankees were so far
- 27:05Speaker 4: ahead of then, not really looking down the schedule looking
- 27:08Speaker 4: at Tampa, and then I'm looking at that and I'm like,
- 27:11Speaker 4: my gosh, they just went past the Yankees. And now
- 27:13Speaker 4: it's it's just doing what they always do. It's they
- 27:15Speaker 4: get the arms that are unherolded. They make these under
- 27:18Speaker 4: the radar trades and they're just they have a great
- 27:21Speaker 4: way of finding players that fit the way they want
- 27:23Speaker 4: baseball to be played, and the guys play exactly like
- 27:26Speaker 4: they want them to, and they fit in their system well.
- 27:29Speaker 4: And it's just year after year for year, they just
- 27:31Speaker 4: seem to find these arms and guys who fit into
- 27:34Speaker 4: their kind of baseball, and they just win a ton
- 27:36Speaker 4: of games every single season.
- 27:40Speaker 2: My co host on the fan cam Wyman calls them cockroaches.
- 27:43Speaker 6: You just can't kill them, Like you think that, oh,
- 27:46Speaker 6: there's no way they're going to be in the mix
- 27:47Speaker 6: this year, and here they are, like thirty and fifteen
- 27:51Speaker 6: and dominant at the trap.
- 27:52Speaker 2: They're sixteen and five at home.
- 27:55Speaker 6: Brad Zach Britten was on you know, my show on
- 27:59Speaker 6: the Fan last week, and you know, I was asking
- 28:01Speaker 6: about the Rays and and he brought up a good point.
- 28:03Speaker 6: He was like, man, I would ask the players like
- 28:07Speaker 6: what did they what did they do?
- 28:08Speaker 2: Like like what is the secrets?
- 28:10Speaker 6: Like when you were a player, Like did you ever
- 28:13Speaker 6: reach out to you know, guys that played on the
- 28:16Speaker 6: o's went to Tampa or former teammates or just try
- 28:20Speaker 6: to find the secret sauce?
- 28:21Speaker 2: Like what did you think of the Rays when you
- 28:23Speaker 2: were playing?
- 28:24Speaker 3: Yeah, they were they were just tough. It was a tough.
- 28:27Speaker 4: The atmosphere was so calm that it made it tough
- 28:30Speaker 4: to play them because it just felt.
- 28:32Speaker 3: So like neutral. There was no like energy in the stadium,
- 28:35Speaker 3: and like they just had good players.
- 28:37Speaker 4: They would get basically sendoffs to everybody from everybody. I
- 28:41Speaker 4: came up with the logan forsythe in San Diego, he
- 28:44Speaker 4: gets traded over to Tampa. It really doesn't play a
- 28:46Speaker 4: ton consistent with San Diego, goes over to Tampa and
- 28:49Speaker 4: has a great career with them.
- 28:51Speaker 3: Played unbelievable.
- 28:52Speaker 4: And then Oliver Drake, he goes over to Tampa and
- 28:55Speaker 4: we're talking to him one time in the outfield.
- 28:57Speaker 3: I'm just like, what's the attitude over there?
- 28:59Speaker 4: He's like, they just have they have a next man
- 29:01Speaker 4: up attitude, and it's that's what they talk about in
- 29:04Speaker 4: the minor leagues, and that's that's just what they do
- 29:06Speaker 4: up there. It's there's gonna be injuries, there's gonna be
- 29:08Speaker 4: guys that come and go. It's next guy up, and
- 29:11Speaker 4: you got to be ready at any single time. And
- 29:12Speaker 4: you can tell that.
- 29:13Speaker 3: Because the roster is never the same year to year.
- 29:16Speaker 3: There's always moves being made.
- 29:18Speaker 4: You look at their bullpen and half the time the
- 29:20Speaker 4: bullpen that was there the year before is gone or
- 29:22Speaker 4: half of them are hurt. But it's like it's just
- 29:24Speaker 4: they have these guys come up from the minor leagues who
- 29:26Speaker 4: fill these spots and do an amazing job. And I
- 29:28Speaker 4: think they just do a great job of preparing their players.
- 29:31Speaker 4: They do a good job of in the minor leagues
- 29:33Speaker 4: teaching them the way they want to play, and they
- 29:36Speaker 4: just go up there and they execute at a very
- 29:38Speaker 4: high level.
- 29:39Speaker 3: And that's why they would rack up wins every year.
- 29:40Speaker 4: It's just the mentality that they have there, and the
- 29:43Speaker 4: guys love playing there.
- 29:44Speaker 3: It's a very comfortable place to play and they just.
- 29:47Speaker 4: Really enjoy being in Saint Pete and playing in that
- 29:49Speaker 4: stadium where you know it's gonna be the perfect temperature
- 29:51Speaker 4: every single night, you know there's not gonna be a
- 29:53Speaker 4: rain out, and there's a lot to be said about that.
- 29:55Speaker 4: When you can go into a stadium knowing you're gonna
- 29:57Speaker 4: play that game every single night on the schedule time.
- 30:00Speaker 3: There's comfortability in that.
- 30:02Speaker 4: And they just they buy in and they do an
- 30:04Speaker 4: amazing job down there.
- 30:07Speaker 1: Yeah, as we said, they've been great at home this
- 30:09Speaker 1: year and they're back in the trap. Of course, one
- 30:11Speaker 1: year they played at Tampa at Steinbrenner Field last year,
- 30:14Speaker 1: but now the Oriols for the first time since twenty
- 30:16Speaker 1: twenty four, We'll be going to play at Tropicana Field,
- 30:20Speaker 1: Tampa Saint Pete's so will be interesting series Monday Night,
- 30:24Speaker 1: Game one Birds and Tampa. The Rays are in first
- 30:27Speaker 1: in the AL East. They have the best record in
- 30:29Speaker 1: the American League, so we'll be here to tell you
