- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,
- 0:12County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37Fear is a horrible thing, isn't it?
- 0:39Fear can really mess you up. It can cause you to just freak
- 0:45out. It can cause you to be hopeless.
- 0:50It can cause you to hear stupid things in your head that are
- 0:54lies from the devil. It can.
- 0:57It can cause people to do horrible things.
- 0:59Fear. God hasn't given us a spirit of
- 1:02fear, the Bible says, but of power and of love, and of a
- 1:06sound mind. Have you ever stopped to think
- 1:08that God created us with a range of emotions along with
- 1:12happiness, joy and contentment? He created us with the potential
- 1:16for anger, jealousy, and impatience.
- 1:19Additionally, Pastor Clark discusses today the emotion of
- 1:23fear. There are positive reasons why
- 1:26we fear. For example, it keeps us from
- 1:28approaching an aggressive dog or from getting into a stranger's
- 1:32car. But sometimes our fear is
- 1:35unfounded. Turn to the Lord in these times
- 1:38and lean on His strength to gain the courage you need now.
- 1:42Here's Pastor Clarky in the book of Acts Chapter 27 with today's
- 1:46edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 1:49If you've ever been to the shore on land and you have a vacation
- 1:53and all of a sudden the winds start coming up and the, and
- 1:55gets to the temperatures drop and the waves start looking
- 1:58really crazy and the lifeguards won't let you in the in the
- 2:01water. That's a discouraging time
- 2:03because Northeasterns could last a week and your whole vacation
- 2:06and all the money is spent to be at the beach.
- 2:08You know, you can't go in the water.
- 2:10You can go up maybe to your knees and that's it.
- 2:12So this is what's happening here.
- 2:13This is a very, very serious storm and it's scary, someone
- 2:19said. It's like they were in this
- 2:21really cool boat and this floating and the sun and the
- 2:25gentle breeze and all of a sudden they're like a toothpick
- 2:28in the mid midst of 40 foot swells that this is
- 2:33unbelievable. So the ship was caught and it
- 2:37could not head into the wind. So we let her dry.
- 2:40So they didn't have the ability to steer this boat.
- 2:42Now this boat was taken by the wind and being pushed down more
- 2:46toward the coast of Africa instead of the shores of Italy.
- 2:50And they couldn't even really tell where they were going.
- 2:52And running under the shelter of an island called Claudia, we
- 2:56secured the skiff with difficulty.
- 2:58They're trying to stabilize this this huge vessel and when they
- 3:02had taken it on board, they use cables.
- 3:05So they're pulling the the lifeboat out of the water to
- 3:08skiff and getting it into the big boat because it would start
- 3:12smashing the other boat. And they undergirded the ship
- 3:15and with these cables to sort of wrap it around to prevent it
- 3:18from coming apart because of the waves less they should run
- 3:21aground on the sands. They struck sail and were so
- 3:25driven and because we were exceedingly Tempest toss the
- 3:29next day they lightened the ship.
- 3:32So they're starting to dump stuff out of the boat.
- 3:35The cargo, which was worth a lot of money, they had to begin to
- 3:40get rid of it because of the weight.
- 3:42They're they're lightning the ship.
- 3:44On the third day we threw the ship's tackle overboard with our
- 3:48own hands. So not any are they getting rid
- 3:50of the grain. But now they're getting rid of
- 3:53any kind of physical bedding or any kind of equipment.
- 3:57It isn't necessary right now. And they're getting rid of all
- 4:00of it. It says in verse 20 now when
- 4:02neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and those small
- 4:06Tempest beat on us all hope that we would be saved was finally
- 4:10given up. Have you ever been in a
- 4:12situation where you're going through something that you feel
- 4:18that there's no hope left and they're ready to give up?
- 4:24I'm sure you have been. I know I have been.
- 4:28There doesn't seem to be any answer or any reason for why it
- 4:31is what it is you're going through.
- 4:35And it's a really time of testing your faith and how well
- 4:41you know God because God will never fail you.
- 4:45He promises us throughout the Scriptures, Jesus never fails.
- 4:51Our faith fails. We get our eyes off of the Lord,
- 4:56we get our minds and our hearts out of the word of God, and then
- 5:00all of a sudden we have nothing to stand on, do we?
- 5:04There's no stability. Everything's uncertain.
- 5:07Everything's up in the air and they're at a point right now
- 5:13that they are basically hopeless and they're giving up.
- 5:20I don't know where you are today, but I'm here to tell you
- 5:23and encourage you. Don't give up no matter what.
- 5:26Get close to God. He's ready to do something.
- 5:31You get close to Him, He'll reveal himself to you in ways
- 5:35that you never even knew Him. I hate to say it, but we're all,
- 5:41at least I'll say myself, knuckleheads, I'm going to say
- 5:45that about you. But God has to many times cause
- 5:50stuff to happen in order to get our attention, to show us like
- 5:54we're missing things. We're not seeing things the way
- 5:58he wants us to. We're maybe not living the way
- 6:00he wants us to live. He's he loves us so much that
- 6:03he's going to do everything he can sometimes.
- 6:05And he starts gradually many times to get your attention.
- 6:08And then if you don't listen, then maybe things get a little
- 6:11bit more challenging, more difficult.
- 6:14But here's Paul in this situation.
- 6:17He's a human being like the rest of them.
- 6:19I'm sure he's freaking out too, in his ways.
- 6:21A lot of people are seasick. They can't even think about
- 6:25eating anything. But Paul begins to speak verse
- 6:3021. But after a long abstinence from
- 6:32food, then Paul stood in the midst of them and said, men, you
- 6:37should have listened to me and not have sailed from Crete and
- 6:40incurred this disaster and loss. Has then anybody ever told you
- 6:45after you made a decision and everything fell apart?
- 6:48I told you so you shouldn't have done that.
- 6:51Always Monday morning quarterbacks always telling you
- 6:54how you should have handled it differently.
- 6:56Well, that's the last thing you want to hear at that point in
- 6:58time because like you already made the decision and
- 7:00everything's messed up. You don't need to tell me that.
- 7:02I already know I've messed up, right?
- 7:05So he says. And now I urge you in verse 22
- 7:10to take heart for there will be no loss of life among you, but
- 7:14only of the ship. Now they must.
- 7:16Some of them had to think he was nuts.
- 7:18The ship is going everywhere and it is like, no way.
- 7:22How are we not going to die? But Paul during this journey was
- 7:25also sharing the gospel. And I'm sure there was people on
- 7:29the ship at that time because of what was happening.
- 7:32Said, hey, Paul, what do I need to do to be saved?
- 7:35Is there an afterlife? Yeah, there is.
- 7:37Let me tell you about it. Let me tell you, this life's
- 7:40real short. You want to put your trust in
- 7:42Jesus because one day you're going to leave this world and
- 7:45you want to be where he is. You don't want to be in hell.
- 7:48You want to be in heaven with the Lord.
- 7:50And he's made a way because of what Jesus did on the cross to
- 7:54die for us and to forgive us of our sins that cleanse us,
- 7:56forgive us, give us new life. So there was probably a lot of
- 8:00deathbed conversions here. I always like visiting hospitals
- 8:05when someone's getting ready to die and they still have
- 8:07consciousness and their loved ones ask the pastor to go and
- 8:12talk to the person who's in the bed.
- 8:14The person in the bed knows that it's coming down the home
- 8:18stretch and they're going to pass from this life.
- 8:21And that's when you begin to tell them about the gospel.
- 8:24And I'm amazed. And how many people are
- 8:26definitely prepared at that point to hear it and to believe
- 8:30it and to depend on the Lord so they can go into heaven?
- 8:34Isn't that wonderful? God in his mercy, He does that.
- 8:37And occasionally someone won't say anything.
- 8:39You don't know if they believed or didn't, but you know, you,
- 8:42you, you tell them the truth and you trust the Holy Spirit to do
- 8:45what only He can do. And so Paul's telling them
- 8:49there's not going to be any loss of life.
- 8:51And this is amazing here, verse 23.
- 8:53Now we know. And Acts 23 verse 11, Paul was
- 8:58in jail and he wasn't sure if he was going to be able to get the
- 9:01room. Jesus showed up personally and
- 9:04spoke to Paul and told him that you're going to get the room,
- 9:09don't worry about it, I'm going to get you there.
- 9:12So Paul tucked that down in his heart, a promise from God to
- 9:15hold on to. But now he's got another
- 9:18spiritual encounter. For there stood by me this night
- 9:22an Angel of the of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve,
- 9:25saying, do not be afraid, Paul, you must be brought before
- 9:29Caesar. And indeed God has granted you
- 9:31all those who sail with you. So the Angel reminded Paul,
- 9:35don't you remember? Jesus told you you're going to
- 9:37get the room. Paul's faith, I'm sure, wasn't
- 9:40shipwrecked, but he's, you know, he's human.
- 9:43Like, you know this stuff. You know what's going to happen
- 9:45here? He needed the confirmation from
- 9:47the Lord that it was going to be OK and they were going to get
- 9:51through it. Don't be afraid, Paul.
- 9:55So Paul's being admonished not to be afraid.
- 9:59And fear is a horrible thing, isn't it?
- 10:01Fear can really mess you up. It can cause you to just freak
- 10:07out. It can cause you to be hopeless.
- 10:12It can cause you to hear stupid things in your head that are
- 10:17lies from the devil. It can.
- 10:19It can cause people to do horrible things.
- 10:21Fear. God hasn't given us a spirit of
- 10:24fear, the Bible says, but a power and of love and of a sound
- 10:28mind. When we have fear, we have to
- 10:33call it out as a lie because God does not give us that spirit,
- 10:38does He? And we have to acknowledge that
- 10:41and ask the Lord to replace the thoughts that we have that are
- 10:44causing the fear with the things that He tells us to think upon.
- 10:48Paul, think on these things whatsoever.
- 10:51Things are pure, lovely, just, and a good report.
- 10:56That's a discipline. It's real easy to get down the
- 10:59fear track and to stay on that right?
- 11:02No, I'm not going to fear, I'm not going to live with this in
- 11:06my head. Lord, take this out.
- 11:08Help me. Ask the Lord to help you.
- 11:10He will stabilize my thoughts. God give me truth to think on
- 11:15and not lies. Therefore take heart men.
- 11:21And He says that to us today. Take heart brothers and sisters,
- 11:24for I believe God that it will be just as it was as he told me.
- 11:30I believe God. Who do you believe in your life?
- 11:35You believe Fox News, CNN, Wall Street?
- 11:40Or do you believe the God of heaven, the creator of the
- 11:43universe? Everything in your life, in my
- 11:47life, is designed by God to cause our faith to increase, not
- 11:51to decrease. Adversity and trial and
- 11:55heartache and tragedy are allowed in our lives to deepen
- 11:58us, not to destroy us. If we believe God, no matter
- 12:04what, we're going to get through.
- 12:06Amen. If we don't believe God, it is
- 12:09hopeless. There is no answer apart from
- 12:12God Himself. So God tests us.
- 12:16And in every situation, He knows where you're at.
- 12:19Clark needs more faith. He needs to go deeper with me,
- 12:24and I'm going to allow this to occur so that he's on his face
- 12:27crying out to me like he never cried out to me before.
- 12:31Someone told me this morning they were moments from death,
- 12:36kidney operating at 2%. A Christian told his brother
- 12:42that God will do whatever he has to do to get us back with him.
- 12:47He'll allow adversity. He'll allow us to get smacked
- 12:51around in life. He'll allow all kinds of things
- 12:54to happen to us that we don't like and we don't think it's
- 12:56fair. Until finally we say, I give up,
- 12:58Lord, I want what you want. No longer do I want what I want.
- 13:04And I still battle as a human being, as I'm sure you do, with
- 13:08my will versus God's will. I try to negotiate with God at
- 13:12times so that he might let me have my way, and sometimes he
- 13:17does. OK, clerk, go ahead.
- 13:20We'll catch up later when it doesn't work out and he's always
- 13:25gracious and merciful and loving.
- 13:27He God never. He's the only one that says I
- 13:29didn't tell you so the words full of like the admonitions of
- 13:34the consequences of going against the will of God.
- 13:36But he's so tender to us when we come to him, no matter where
- 13:41we've come from. He's the good father, the Good
- 13:45Shepherd, the merciful 1 and I love the story of the prodigal
- 13:50when he comes back. He's not sitting down with an
- 13:52acquisition and bunch of questions.
- 13:56He knows our heart and he knows when we turn, when we repent.
- 14:00And right away he's like, I know, I know, I love you.
- 14:03Come, let me hug you, let me embrace you, Let me restore you
- 14:06and let me reveal myself to you. So then Paul says, OK, we're
- 14:11going to get through this, but we are going to run a ground on
- 14:13a certain island. So remember that just because
- 14:16you're a Christian doesn't mean you won't have trials.
- 14:18You won't have tribulations, but you will get through them
- 14:21because of him. None of us get through this life
- 14:24without stuff occurring. Now.
- 14:27When the 14th, 40th, 14th night had come, as we were driven up
- 14:33and down the Adriatic Sea about midnight, the sailors sensed
- 14:37that they were drawing near to some land, so they were hearing
- 14:40the Breakers on the shoreline. They knew they couldn't see
- 14:43anything because the stars and the and the moon and everything
- 14:46was blocked out from the clouds from the storm.
- 14:49They knew they were getting near land and they took soundings and
- 14:52found it to be 20 fathoms. So they're checking the depth of
- 14:54the water, 20 fathoms. And then they got a little
- 14:57further. They took sounding again and
- 14:59found it to be 15 fathoms. Then fearing lest we should run
- 15:03aground on the rocks, they dropped 4 anchors from the stern
- 15:07and prayed for day to come. So like, oh, God help this
- 15:11daylight to come so we can see what's going on here.
- 15:14When they had let down the skiff into the sea under pretense of
- 15:17putting out anchors from the prow, Paul said, this centurion
- 15:21and the soldiers, unless these men stay in the ship, you cannot
- 15:24be saved. So some guys wanted to get in
- 15:26that little dinghy and watch out for their own hides and not
- 15:30worry about anybody else. But Paul said, hey, these guys
- 15:33all got to stay in this boat the way God set it up so that
- 15:37everybody's going to get saved and get through this.
- 15:39Then the soldiers cut away the ropes of the skiff and let it
- 15:42fall off. So there was no chance of any
- 15:44escape that way. And as the day was about to
- 15:47dawn, Paul implored them all to take food, saying today is the
- 15:5014th day you have waited and continue without food and eat
- 15:54nothing. Now some of these people weren't
- 15:56eating because of fast, but some people I'm sure were seasick and
- 15:59there's no way they were interested in having any food.
- 16:02But Paul knew they were going to need some stamina and strength
- 16:04to be able to swim from where they were jumping in the water
- 16:08to get to land. OK.
- 16:10Therefore, I urge you to take nourishment, for this is for
- 16:13your survival, since not a hair will fall from the head of any
- 16:17of you. And when he had said these
- 16:19things, he took bread and gave thanks to God in the presence of
- 16:22them all. So some believe that he was
- 16:24actually, you know, providing the Lord's Supper for the
- 16:27believers there, but he gave thanks publicly.
- 16:30So Paul's a witness in the midst of all this craziness, and
- 16:34that's what God calls you me to be.
- 16:35He's watching how you handle whatever it is you're dealing
- 16:39with. And are you still thanking God,
- 16:42walking with God, praising God, following the Lord?
- 16:45Are you wimping out and freaking out and saying you're not going
- 16:49to follow God anymore because of what happened to you?
- 16:52That's the big decision. And when God puts you or allows
- 16:57you to be in something you don't like, but you know it's for your
- 17:01good, it's going to be for the benefit of other people as they
- 17:05watch how you handle your relationship with God in the
- 17:09midst of the adversity. And whenever they see you
- 17:12staying stable and strong in the Lord.
- 17:15Someone's going to ask you one day, how did tell me about this
- 17:18God you follow? I need to know him.
- 17:21I need to have him. I don't know how you're getting
- 17:24through what it is you're getting through, but I see you
- 17:27getting through and I know you tell me it's because of your
- 17:29faith in the Lord. I need this Jesus too.
- 17:33But if we fall apart and we give up and we curse God, then
- 17:38everything is a mess. So they were encouraged.
- 17:42They ate. They began to eat, and they were
- 17:45all encouraged and also took food themselves.
- 17:48Verse 37 and all we were 276 persons on the ship.
- 17:53So when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship and
- 17:55threw out the wheat into the sea.
- 17:57When it was day they did not recognize the land, but they
- 18:02observed the Bay with the beach onto which they planned to run
- 18:06the ship if possible. This little island is South of
- 18:12Italy and it's called Malta. And they let go of the anchors
- 18:17and left them in the sea, meanwhile loosening the rudder
- 18:20ropes. And they hoisted the mainsail to
- 18:22the wind and made for sure. So they're they're going right
- 18:24into the ground, the ship into the sand, but striking a place
- 18:28where two seas met. They ran the strip aground and
- 18:31Prowl stuck fast and remained immovable.
- 18:33But the stern was being broken up by the violence of the waves,
- 18:38and the soldiers plan was to kill the prisoners lest any of
- 18:41them should swim away and escape.
- 18:43But the centurion wanted to save Paul, kept them from their
- 18:46purpose, and commanded that those who could swim should jump
- 18:49overboard first and get to the land and the rest, some on
- 18:53boards and some on parts of the ship.
- 18:55And so it was that they all escaped safely to land.
- 19:00So the Lord has this in the Bible to teach us that when
- 19:06you're in situations that are beyond your ability to control,
- 19:10that God is the one that will show up and give you the ability
- 19:13to stay, stay stable and sane and not be freaking out.
- 19:19And I can rehearse in my own life.
- 19:22I'm sure you can't. I remember when this happened.
- 19:24Oh God, I didn't know how I was going to ever get through it.
- 19:28And here I am so many years later, and it's in the past and
- 19:31it's a chapter in the legacy of my own personal life and my
- 19:34family's life. I can say God's still in
- 19:39control. He's still working, He's still
- 19:41doing miracles. He's still getting us through
- 19:43all of us. And, and as a body of believers,
- 19:45as a family of God here we walk in the midst of the adversity
- 19:49with each other, don't we? We pray for each other, we lift
- 19:52each other up. We're there for one another.
- 19:54We care for each other. And we we wait on the Lord to
- 19:57bring the healing and the comfort and the deliverance and
- 20:00eventually the testimony. Nothing better than a testimony.
- 20:05Of someone who's been through something that, you know, only
- 20:08God could get him through. This young couple that I met at
- 20:12the conference, I said, how's your mom and dad doing?
- 20:16They said our dad just died a month ago of a massive heart
- 20:19attack. Godly man, probably in his early
- 20:2350's the last time you'd think you'd be dying at that age,
- 20:26right? But they had joy in their face.
- 20:30They had the peace of God. Yeah, their hearts are broken,
- 20:32but they know they're dads with the Lord and they are going to
- 20:36keep serving God. How many people would have maybe
- 20:40said I'm not going to serve God anymore.
- 20:42Look what he did. Look what happened in my life.
- 20:45That's not the Christian way, is it?
- 20:48The Christian way is though he slay me yet I will trust him.
- 20:53And I don't know about you, but Pastor Lewis and myself and the
- 20:57guys that went to the conference together, we heard things that
- 21:05are activating things in our heart that only an experience
- 21:09like that can accomplish. We went with soft hearts.
- 21:13As I pray you come to church on Sundays or Wednesdays whenever
- 21:16studies your heart's open to to hear from God because God's
- 21:21going to speak through His Word. He never does not speak through
- 21:25His Word. I got a new app on my phone, so
- 21:28when I'm driving around, I'm hearing one scripture after
- 21:31another. Scriptures when you drive,
- 21:32scriptures when you eat, scriptures when you sleep,
- 21:35scriptures when your leisure, whatever.
- 21:37It's just awesome. Nice little bit of music in the
- 21:39background. But this is the word, the word,
- 21:41the word. You got to hold on to the Word
- 21:44of God and you got to know the Word of God, and you got to
- 21:47believe the word of God and you got to act on the word of God in
- 21:51Psalm 121, God, the help of those who seek Him.
- 21:54You got to seek the Lord. The Lord wants you to seek Him.
- 21:58And the psalmist says, I will lift my eyes up to the hills or
- 22:02to the mountains from whence comes my help when stuff's
- 22:08happening. You can call 30 people on the
- 22:10phone and I'll pray for you, but no one can help you but God,
- 22:13right? Isn't that the reality, The
- 22:15bottom line only? The only person that can help
- 22:18you and life is God. We can point people to God, we
- 22:23can tell people about God, but they have to get with God, just
- 22:27like you do whenever things are dismal, desperate, disastrous.
- 22:32My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth.
- 22:35He will not allow your foot to be moved.
- 22:37He who keeps you will not slumber.
- 22:40Behold, he who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.
- 22:44The Lord is your keeper. The Lord is your shade at your
- 22:46right hand. The sun shall not strike you by
- 22:49day, nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve you from
- 22:53all evil. He shall preserve your soul.
- 22:55The Lord shall preserve your going out.
- 22:57And you're coming in from this time forth and even forever
- 23:02more. Amen.
- 23:04Psalm 121. Get with the Lord in that Psalm
- 23:08if, if you really need to connect right now and let the
- 23:12Psalm wash over you and let it feel you and let it renew this,
- 23:16this need that that God has in his heart in the sense of
- 23:21wanting you to depend fully upon him, to trust him and every
- 23:28situation that you're in, and He'll be strong on your behalf.
- 23:33Amen. If this isn't true, why are we
- 23:37here today, right? If this isn't true, what else is
- 23:40there to believe in nothing that it is true, Jesus tells us the
- 23:45trust in Him with all of our heart.
- 23:48Lean not to our understanding and always acknowledge Him and
- 23:52He shall direct our paths. Thank you for listening to this
- 23:58edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 24:01Pastor Clark is teaching us about the book of Acts in this
- 24:04series. Acts is a powerful and unique
- 24:07part of Scripture, not just because it records the spread of
- 24:10the gospel geographically from Jerusalem to the ends of the
- 24:13earth, but also culturally. Acts shows us how the message of
- 24:18Jesus moved beyond its Jewish roots and began to reach the
- 24:21Gentile world. What started with Peter leading
- 24:24a small group in the Upper Room became a global movement with
- 24:28Paul taking the gospel to cities, synagogues and
- 24:32marketplaces across the Roman Empire.
- 24:35Acts captures this vital transition and reminds us that
- 24:39the good news of Jesus is for all people in every place.
- 24:43May we be inspired to carry that same gospel boldly into our
- 24:48world today. Living Waters of Grace comes to
- 24:51you from Calvary Chapel, Westmoreland.
