- 0:01Jennifer Davis: Welcome to the Best of Redmond.
- 0:03Jennifer Davis: I'm Jennifer Davis.
- 0:04Dan Schulz: And I'm Dan Schultz, and this is Redmond's twice weekly newsletter and podcast about all the amazing things happening in and around Redmond for the next seven days.
- 0:14Dan Schulz: Jennifer, we talked about it in the last episode, but now Pupchella is turning Redmond Town Center into a giant dog festival.
- 0:23Dan Schulz: See, last time we talked about the pre-Pupchella.
- 0:25Dan Schulz: The pre-Pupchella, that's right.
- 0:26Jennifer Davis: The pre-Pupchella, that's right.
- 0:28Jennifer Davis: This is the real deal, Dan.
- 0:29Jennifer Davis: This is happening.
- 0:31Jennifer Davis: it's officially crossed the line from cute pet event into full-on Redmond spectacle territory.
- 0:37Jennifer Davis: Pupchella will be taking over Redmond Town Center on Sunday, May 17th from 11 to 5 with live music, local pet vendors, dog treats, giveaways, photo stations, and what sounds like an alarming concentration of golden retrievers wearing bandanas.
- 0:56Dan Schulz: of adorable
- 0:58Jennifer Davis: They're also doing a Bark Like a Rockstar costume contest where dogs dress as musicians and walk a runway for prizes, which honestly feels destined to flood local Instagram feeds by about 2:00 PM.
- 1:13Jennifer Davis: The whole event is free.
- 1:14Jennifer Davis: Dogs need to stay leashed, and there are even hotel staycation deals tied into this weekend.
- 1:20Jennifer Davis: If your dog likes attention, this is basically their Coachella.
- 1:24Jennifer Davis: Now, Dan, what would you dress your two dogs as?
- 1:28Dan Schulz: Well, they're Chihuahuas.
- 1:29Dan Schulz: I can't put too much on them or it will crush them, Jennifer.
- 1:33Dan Schulz: Two, two small bandanas and that's it.
- 1:36Dan Schulz: If I put anything heavier than that on little Foxy, he's top-heavy and he'll just tip over head first and his little Chihuahua legs will be up in the air.
- 1:47Jennifer Davis: I think I'd dress my older Chihuahua as Cher.
- 1:53Dan Schulz: I know your Chihuahua.
- 1:54Dan Schulz: I
- 1:54Jennifer Davis: have Baby as my...
- 1:57Dan Schulz: Yeah You should auto-tune her barking.
- 1:59Dan Schulz: Let's see how that sounds sometime.
- 2:03Dan Schulz: The giant Saturday morning car meetup at the Redmond Town Center is back again on May 16th from 9:00 to 11:00 AM.
- 2:11Dan Schulz: This week they're doing German Car Day, so expect a ton of Porsche, BMW, Audi, and Mercedes stuff parked all over the center court area.
- 2:21Dan Schulz: Even if you're not a hardcore car person, it is actually really fun to look all over and look at the stuff.
- 2:28Dan Schulz: Just look around.
- 2:29Dan Schulz: You're gonna see a ton of weird, rare stuff that people bring out.
- 2:32Dan Schulz: This thing always pulls a huge crowd every week once the weather gets nice.
- 2:37Dan Schulz: This is a really good move if you've got kids who are into cars or just need an excuse to grab some coffee and wander around outside.
- 2:44Dan Schulz: Super fun.
- 2:47Jennifer Davis: If you want something quieter than staring at Lamborghinis all morning, then the Eastside Symphony is playing Saturday night, May 16th at 7:30 at the Redmond Performing Arts Center.
- 3:00Jennifer Davis: They're doing Amy Beach's Gaelic Symphony, plus selections from Bizet, Mozart, Verdi, and Rimsky-Korsakov.
- 3:08Jennifer Davis: So basically a pretty stacked lineup if you're into orchestral music or opera stuff.
- 3:14Jennifer Davis: Tickets are available online, and the venue's easy to get in and out of compared to Seattle concert halls.
- 3:22Jennifer Davis: good date night option if you want something low-key that doesn't involve fighting downtown traffic.
- 3:30Dan Schulz: I have one huge fear in my life, Jennifer.
- 3:33Dan Schulz: It is snakes.
- 3:35Jennifer Davis: It is snakes.
- 3:36Dan Schulz: It is definitely snakes.
- 3:38Dan Schulz: I want to give everyone a warning.
- 3:41Dan Schulz: What I'm about to talk about has nothing to do with snakes.
- 3:45Jennifer Davis: What's
- 3:46Dan Schulz: The Redmond Library is teaching kids how to code in Python.
- 3:50Dan Schulz: Python is a computer code It has nothing to
- 3:53Jennifer Davis: is correct.
- 3:54Dan Schulz: Saturday, May 16th from 11:30 to 1:00 PM for kids age nine to 13.
- 4:00Dan Schulz: This is really very beginner-friendly.
- 4:03Dan Schulz: They're calling it Demystifying Coding, and the idea is each session walks kids through building a small Python project without assuming they've coded anything before.
- 4:13Dan Schulz: Kids should bring a laptop or a device if they can, though the library has a limited number available too.
- 4:19Dan Schulz: If your kid is curious about programming and computers but gets overwhelmed by giant online classes, this is really a lot more approachable.
- 4:28Dan Schulz: Registration's probably smart since these library STEM events fill up really fast.
- 4:35Jennifer Davis: if you've got kids who dance, know somebody who dances, or just want something different to do this weekend, this thing is huge.
- 4:45Jennifer Davis: Dance Seattle Dance runs Saturday, May 16th from noon to 9:00 at Juanita High School in Kirkland, and they're packing the place with performances, food vendors, shopping booths, mehendi, and basically an all-day cultural festival around the competition itself.
- 5:04Jennifer Davis: Admission is free, but you do need to register online ahead of time.
- 5:08Jennifer Davis: They're also doing North and South Indian food, sweets, and a bunch of local vendors.
- 5:14Jennifer Davis: It's probably worth showing up hungry.
- 5:18Dan Schulz: It's probably worth going out- Speaking of being hungry, Jennifer, in a world full of chain restaurants and corporate food, La Tía Angelina stands out as the real deal.
- 5:25Dan Schulz: Brian and Amelia have been running this food truck for five years using recipes from Brian's parents, Angelina and Miguel, who brought them over from Jalisco, Mexico.
- 5:36Dan Schulz: Angelina still makes the salsas and the sauces by hand.
- 5:40Dan Schulz: It is so good.
- 5:41Dan Schulz: That's three generations of family in every single thing they serve.
- 5:45Dan Schulz: It's literally just Brian and Amelia running the whole operation with their five kids pitching in when they can.
- 5:52Dan Schulz: You can find them parked behind the bus stop near the QFC in Bellevue right next to the Tiki Masala restaurant, and they care about their community too.
- 6:00Dan Schulz: I really love this about them.
- 6:02Dan Schulz: They offer student discounts for Bellevue College kids because they're right there And discounts for local nonprofit workers.
- 6:09Dan Schulz: Brian and Amelia aren't just business owners trying to make a quick buck.
- 6:13Dan Schulz: They're a family that happens to make incredible food, and that is the difference you can taste That message brought to you by La Tía Angelina Food Truck.
- 6:23Jennifer Davis: Okay, it's time for the Redmond History Minute, where we share an interesting piece of history, trivia, or tidbit about life in and around Redmond.
- 6:34Dan Schulz: And for those playing along at home, which we urge you to do, Jennifer won last time.
- 6:39Dan Schulz: She got it correct.
- 6:40Dan Schulz: Now, this time, do you have a question for me?
- 6:43Jennifer Davis: I sure do, Dan.
- 6:44Jennifer Davis: Are you all set and ready to hear this?
- 6:47Dan Schulz: and ready to hear Um, I'm not going anywhere for the next 15 minutes, so I don't care what you do or say.
- 6:52Jennifer Davis: Okay Redmond's longest serving mayor, Bill Brown, served 30 years from 1919 to 1949.
- 7:00Dan Schulz: Geez.
- 7:01Jennifer Davis: What was his motto?
- 7:03Jennifer Davis: Was it A, Redmond first always; B, all roads lead to Redmond; C, keep Redmond growing; or D, Brown gets it done?
- 7:16Jennifer Davis: And your time starts now.
- 7:19Dan Schulz: Brown gets it done?
- 7:20Dan Schulz: Brown gets it done.
- 7:22Dan Schulz: Okay, so this is like 1919 to 1949, so they didn't have the slick political messaging they have nowadays.
- 7:32Dan Schulz: Redmond first always, all roads lead to Redmond.
- 7:37Dan Schulz: That seems kinda like uh, something a local politician would do who didn't wanna do any effort.
- 7:43Dan Schulz: Like all roads lead...
- 7:44Dan Schulz: He probably heard all roads lead to Rome or whatever.
- 7:47Dan Schulz: Eh, I'll use that maybe.
- 7:48Dan Schulz: Keep Redmond...
- 7:49Dan Schulz: You know what?
- 7:49Dan Schulz: I'm gonna go with Brown gets it done because I picture this guy...
- 7:54Dan Schulz: I don't know anything about Bill Brown, I'll be very honest, and if any of the Brown family's listening, I certainly don't mean any disrespect.
- 8:01Dan Schulz: But I think a guy back then is gonna go big-headed and go, "Vote for me because Brown gets it done."
- 8:10Dan Schulz: My-- That's my final answer.
- 8:15Jennifer Davis: All right then, Dan, you were right.
- 8:18Jennifer Davis: Ding, ding, ding.
- 8:19Jennifer Davis: Brown gets it done.
- 8:21Jennifer Davis: Very subtle,
- 8:22Dan Schulz: way to put the effort in.
- 8:24Jennifer Davis: Bill Brown ran a saloon, then a garage with 20 mechanic stalls, then served as mayor for three straight decades.
- 8:32Jennifer Davis: When Prohibition shut down his saloon in 1916, he turned it into a drug store, then pivoted to fixing cars.
- 8:41Dan Schulz: Why did you do the quotation marks, Jennifer?
- 8:44Dan Schulz: What are you trying to say about Billy Brown?
- 8:47Jennifer Davis: I'm sure there was a room in the back.
- 8:51Jennifer Davis: He also bought an omnibus to shuttle passengers between Kirkland and Redmond.
- 8:55Jennifer Davis: his biggest accomplishment, paving the West Lake Sammamish Parkway between Redmond and Issaquah.
- 9:01Jennifer Davis: That's a pretty long stretch right there.
- 9:03Dan Schulz: Wow, this guy is a mover.
- 9:05Jennifer Davis: For sure Brown gets it done.
- 9:07Jennifer Davis: He was finally voted out in 1949 by just 332 total votes.
- 9:13Jennifer Davis: His 1913 saloon building is still standing.
- 9:16Jennifer Davis: It's now the Matador Restaurant.
- 9:19Dan Schulz: Brown, you got it done.
- 9:20Dan Schulz: You Should've tried a little harder the last, uh, election.
- 9:24Dan Schulz: 350 more people would've got you in so you could get more done.
- 9:37Jennifer Davis: All right, Dan, so what are these little rumor birdies saying this week?
- 9:40Dan Schulz: well, the, uh, birds flying overhead did drop something on my head and neck, and it is a rumor.
- 9:47Dan Schulz: This is what is truly floating around right now.
- 9:49Dan Schulz: We've heard from a couple different people that somebody's planning a neighborhood larder somewhere on Cleveland Street.
- 9:56Dan Schulz: Do you know what a larder is, Jennifer?
- 9:59Jennifer Davis: I, I don't know.
- 10:00Jennifer Davis: Is it like a pantry?
- 10:01Jennifer Davis: It's where you store your lard?
- 10:03Jennifer Davis: I don't know.
- 10:04Dan Schulz: Is that Like a pantry?
- 10:05Dan Schulz: Like a store your lard?
- 10:06Dan Schulz: I don't know.
- 10:07Dan Schulz: Is that what...
- 10:08Dan Schulz: I don't, I don't know either because, you know.
- 10:09Dan Schulz: it's n- 1952.
- 10:10Dan Schulz: Supposedly the idea is part bakery, part wine shop, part prepared meals counter for people grabbing dinner on the way home from Microsoft.
- 10:18Dan Schulz: There is no lard We're in a b- uh, so okay, just if this happens, first of all, we don't know anything about this.
- 10:26Dan Schulz: It's good for people coming home from Microsoft, but what if those Microsoft people need some lard?
- 10:31Dan Schulz: I don't know what they're gonna do.
- 10:32Dan Schulz: here's what they're saying, though.
- 10:34Dan Schulz: "Think fresh pasta, sourdough, grab-and-go meals, and a small wine wall."
- 10:38Dan Schulz: Now, to be clear, we have really no more information other than that.
- 10:42Dan Schulz: We don't know if it's confirmed.
- 10:43Dan Schulz: Uh, we don't know the exact location or who's behind it, but I don't know.
- 10:47Dan Schulz: This sounds really kinda cool.
- 10:50Dan Schulz: It sounds very Redmond to me.
- 10:52Dan Schulz: if you have any information about this rumor at all, we'd appreciate your help.
