- 0:07How you doing everybody? LeBoudreau with the leadoff man from Olympic Stadium in Montreal, Canada, for the last appearance of the Cubs in Montreal, and they're going to send number 33, Bill Barnum.
- 0:30He's going to go against number 33, Wayne Twitzell, for the Montreal Expos. The leadoff man is brought to you by Easygo Service Station, serving you throughout Chicagoland.
- 0:40We'll be talking to our guest, a gentleman who's certainly gained a milestone in his career as a Major League ball player, and there's going to be many, many more milestones for this fine gentleman.
- 0:50Tony Perez of the Montreal Expos in just one minute.
- 0:54If you've never been to an Easygo Service Station, there couldn't be a better time than right now to break a bad habit.
- 1:03There's lots of reasons to go Easygo. Just the cost of gasoline, what it is today, should be reason enough.
- 1:10You'll find only top quality, high performance gas at our pumps, and our Easygo prices are about as reasonable as you'll find anywhere, and anywhere is just about where we are.
- 1:21There's Easygo serving you from northwest Indiana to Rockford and all over Chicagoland, and chances are there's one right in your neighborhood, serving you the most efficient way it can, offering you clean, fast, and defendable service.
- 1:34Many Easygo's even offer you convenience items such as fresh milk, soda pop, ice, and bread. Yes, at Easygo we have a lot to offer.
- 1:43Take heed to that old saying, try it, you'll like it, because now is the opportune time to start a good habit. Everyone's going Easygo.
- 1:54Tony Perez is our guest. Tony reached that milestone that I mentioned earlier by driving in his 1200th RBI, and only three other men in baseball as active that has driven in that many, Willie McCovey, Carl Yastramsky, Tony Perez, and Willie Stargell, who is on the Disablist right now.
- 2:16And that is a great milestone and one that you should be very proud of, Tony. Yes, I am. Really, I was looking for this the whole year, and I didn't know if I could reach it this year because I wasn't playing for Cincinnati.
- 2:27You know, we get a lot of men on base over there, and here in Montreal we don't have the same kind of offense that Cincinnati have, but I've been lucky this year, and I get a man on base, and I came through with that, but I need a run.
- 2:38And really I'm proud to be in that group, in me, at 1200 RBI, really. I think any ball player should be proud of himself. Absolutely. That's a great milestone.
- 2:51And more to come because you have several years left, I'm quite sure, in this game of baseball. Since the All-Star game, you've been swinging a hot bat. Was there anything that you changed to bring that about?
- 3:03No, I didn't change at all. I think early on in the year I was trying too hard to help this ball club, and this is a young ball club, and I was trying to get my experience and trying to drop in more runs and trying to hit more home runs.
- 3:17And really the pitcher was beating around me, and I was swinging a lot of better pitches. And then after the other start break I said, well, Tony, you better go back and do what you were doing in all your career.
- 3:27You know, go to the opposite field, go to the right field and hit a ball or whatever. And I've been doing that lately, and really I got good success off.
- 3:36And I think mentally you've sort of relaxed more in the atmosphere here in Montreal because it must have been a shock to you when the trade was first accumulated between Cincinnati and Montreal.
- 3:48Well, it surprised me a little when I hear about it, but after that I said, well, if Cincinnati wants to trade me because they've got somebody else younger and they can do the job. I just said, well, Montreal wants me.
- 3:59And, you know, they go to a new stadium and they want to build a contender here. I might help. And I took the challenge and said, well, I'll go and see what I can do.
- 4:09Well, I think you're going to be a contender in the near future, if not next year. All you need is about two pitchers that can give you 15 to 18 wins. You've got a veteran ball club with a very young outfield, but this year will help them tremendously and experience. They have great ability, don't they?
- 4:25Yeah, I think they got a young ball club, especially in the outfield. And we lost a lot of games. We made a lot of mistakes this year, but I think they will learn and next year I know we're going to play better. And like you said, we need a couple of pitchers that can give us a win and another guy on the bullpen, you know, a good reliever.
- 4:45And really that's what we're looking for. And I think we're going to be a contender soon. Tony, when you first come over here and come into this ballpark, Olympic Stadium, it's a huge area. But then after you play a few games here, the ball seem to carry well, don't they?
- 5:00Yeah, they both carry good. You got a hitter, but they still carry good. And I had them the year watching, but now, you know, in the middle of the year, it's still warm and things like that. I think the atmosphere is better and they both carry very well.
- 5:12Now with a man next to you like Davy Cash, of course, you had the great one Morgan on your right also. This means that they can carry the glove quite well and carry the territory so you can guard the line a little more.
- 5:26Oh, he's right. Davy got a lot of ground and really, you know, he helped me like Morgan did. And I think I can play the line better. And Davy really helped this ball club because he got the experience and he helped me and everybody in this club.
- 5:39You made a play last night that saved the run, going to your right backhand of the ball and tossing it to the pitcher. It looked like it was a base hit all the way. And these little plays, execution means so much. When you execute, you win.
- 5:53Well, you got to be ready anytime you are laying in and you're tied. You got to, you know, the game is tied. You have to, you have to be ready for anything here close to you and maybe play.
- 6:02Tony, you have 80 some RBIs. You're looking for that 100?
- 6:07What I'm looking for, really, I'm looking for is 90 because you know I have 10 straight years, got the record 10 straight years. You know, to draw me more than 90. And I need five. I had 85 and I really looking at the 90. But I give 100 much better.
- 6:21I think you will. You've got a lot of ball games left for you and several right here in the home ballpark. And these fans have been terrific this year. You're going to draw over a million, 400,000.
- 6:30Yeah, I think so. I think we're going to break that record. They say here under the first year, 59 and really depend being gray. And this is a good baseball town.
- 6:39I want to thank you very much for coming over and talking with us and offer all of us to you. Congratulations on a great job.
- 6:46Thank you, Lou.
- 6:47Tony Perez, fine gentleman and who's reached the milestone in his career driving in 1200 RBIs. And as you heard him, he has led the league. He has a record of driving in 90 or more runs batted in for the last 10 years.
- 7:04So actually, perhaps it was a great trade for Montreal Expos with the Cincinnati Reds. We'll be right back after this message.

- 10:20Wow!
- 10:50The Chicago Cubs are on the air. Good evening everybody and welcome once again to Major League Baseball.
- 11:12And let's hope tonight we're going to be able to report a cup victory for you. Seems like it's been forever today.
- 11:20And tonight they meet the Montreal Expos for the final time in the season and while they hold an edge over this club for the season series, beating them 10 out of 17.
- 11:30In the last eight meetings Montreal has had the big edge. The Expos have knocked off the Cubs six times in the last eight meetings between them this year.
- 11:39That's enough of that. Bill Bonham with a 3-0 record against Montreal for the season.
- 11:45Will be trying to even up for the year against the Expos tonight. A cup veteran right hander is now 10-11 and he goes up against Wayne Pwichell.
- 11:54Big right hander started the season with the Philadelphia Phillies and right now he has a dime store record, 5-10 for the year.
- 12:03I'm Vince Lloyd and along with Lou Boudreau we welcome you to our broadcast. Tonight's game for Montreal's Olympic Stadium is brought to you by General Finances 65 Chicagoland offices.

- 12:53This broadcast tonight is authorized under rights granted by the Chicago National League Ball Club which has a right of approval to the announcers for this event.
- 12:59It's solely for the entertainment of our audience and any publication, rebroadcast, or other use of the descriptions and accounts of the game without the express written consent of the Chicago National League Ball Club is prohibited.
- 13:13Weather conditions are a little more suitable for baseball. Here in Montreal tonight we don't have that wintry wind blowing in around the stadium. Even the players last night were talking about it after the ball game and today they had never felt this cold.
- 13:29Even those who have been up in the old ballpark, Jerry Clark, as they did here last night. And they were cold at the plate too because after the third inning when Larry Bittner led off with a home run, his third against this ball club this year, from that point on, Cubs managed only two hits.
- 13:46And of course as you know by now, dropped one in twelve buttings, the last four in three to two.
- 13:52Tonight young Mike Gordon is going to be doing the catching again. He's the catcher that Cubs just brought up from Wichita.
- 14:00Worked in last night's ball game and he'll be Bonham's battery mate tonight. But leading off for the Cubs will be Ivan DeJesus at shortstop.
- 14:08Larry Bittner, who was sixth for twelve in his last three ball games, will be batting second playing in left field with Bill Buckner over at first base hitting third. Jerry Morales, who did not start last night, tonight will be in center field and hit in the clean up position.
- 14:26And of course, the first baseman, Steve Mercer batting fifth, playing in right field. Steve Anabares will be at third base hitting sixth. Manny Trio at second, batting seventh. And the rookie, Mike Gordon, with Bill Bonham ten and eleven for the year.
- 14:42Maybe cash to lead off at second base. The rookie up from Denver, Stan Pappy, he ATI, will be at third, hitting in the number two spot. Andre Dawson hitting in third position. Dawson, the center fielder.
- 14:58Here's a fellow that helped break our hearts last night. Tony Perez, first baseman, hitting in the clean up spot. Alice Valentine in right field batting fifth. Gary Carter doing the catching, followed by the left fielder, Warren Cromarty.
- 15:16Cromarty hitting seventh. First fire at the shortstop, hitting eighth. The pitcher, battered right hander, Wayne Twitchell.
- 15:24Pittsburgh and the St. Louis Cardinals are underway in their first game tonight at St. Louis.
- 15:30And they're in the fourth inning. John Candelaria going for the Pirates against Eric Rasmussen for the cards.
- 15:37And there is no score in the fourth. That's the first of their finite doubleheaders. You know by now they were rained out last night.
- 15:43The New York Mets at Philadelphia tonight have Craig Swan pitching against Randy Lurch, both have won eight ballgames for the respective ball clubs this year. Swan is eight and eight and Lurch eight and five.
- 15:55And of course we'll be at New York tomorrow to finish a suspended game caused by the blackout.
- 16:02And then a regular game tomorrow evening.
- 16:06And a single game on Saturday followed by a Sunday doubleheader. That too caused by the blackout. Earlier today at San Francisco, before a pretty slim turnout, 1612.
- 16:18Houston defeated the Giants 6-3. The gene fence coming on and getting a split win against Ed Helicki.
- 16:27Ed Herman got his first homer of the year, Bob Watson Homer. Now the National Anthems.
- 16:32Music
- 16:40Music
- 16:50Music
- 17:00Oh
- 17:30Oh
- 18:00Oh
- 18:30Oh
- 18:32Rounds of white
- 18:50breaking
- 18:55Oh
- 18:57the first game in the first
- 18:59inning.
- 19:00And the first game between
- 19:01Oakland and Kansas City.
- 19:02They've gotten underway by the
- 19:04blue against Andy Hasler and
- 19:05the Oakland A's put two runs on
- 19:08the board in the top of the
- 19:09first inning.
- 19:10Kansas City now coming to bat
- 19:13playing Mitchell getting out to
- 19:14the mound at big six foot six
- 19:15inch right hander before he
- 19:17Von DeJesus steps in to open up
- 19:19the ballgame for the Cubs with
- 19:20the Cubs.
- 19:21And the Cubs are in the
- 19:21opening game.
- 19:22And the Cubs are in the
- 19:23opening game.
- 19:24And the Cubs are in the
- 19:24opening game.
- 19:25And the Cubs are in the
- 19:25opening game.
- 19:26The Cubs would take time off
- 19:27for this.
- 19:29If hardware manufacturers only
- 19:31made one size screw you'd only
- 19:33need one screwdriver.
- 19:34But true value hardware stores
- 19:36know screws come in all sizes
- 19:38in standard and Phillips heads.
- 19:39So just one screwdriver won't
- 19:41do the job.
- 19:42That's why true value hardware
- 19:44stores offer the master
- 19:45mechanic eight piece
- 19:46screwdriver set for just four
- 19:48and a quarter.
- 19:49These eight screwdrivers come in
- 19:51a combination of sizes with both
- 19:53regular and Phillips tips.
- 19:55So you'll always have the right
- 19:56size and style for every job you
- 19:58tackle.
- 19:59And they come packed in a
- 20:00handy plastic snap pouch for
- 20:02easy storing.
- 20:04So unless you only use one size
- 20:06screw you need a complete set of
- 20:08screwdrivers.
- 20:09Get the master mechanic eight
- 20:11piece screwdriver set for just
- 20:12four twenty five exclusively at
- 20:15participating true value
- 20:16hardware stores.
- 20:38Wayne Tretchel twenty nine years
- 20:40of age.
- 20:43Then his career in the majors
- 20:44started with the Phillies came
- 20:46over this year this ball club
- 20:48ten games under the 500 mark and
- 20:51this year he's five and ten.
- 20:53Oh and one against the Cubs.
- 20:55He lost to the Cubs earlier this
- 20:57year while he was with the
- 20:58Phillies.
- 20:59But he has come on strong in
- 21:01his last two ballgames and this
- 21:03big fellow from Portland Oregon
- 21:05there does some basketball
- 21:06appreciating in high school in
- 21:08the offseason has won his last
- 21:10two ballgames defeating the
- 21:12Pirates in the New York Mets.
- 21:14So he's been getting into the
- 21:15groove.
- 21:16Yvonne DeJesus last night one
- 21:17for six steps in hitting two
- 21:19sixty three three homers thirty
- 21:21four runs batted in with a
- 21:23rookie right hander played up
- 21:24fire Andy Olson what you'll get
- 21:28society here's the pitch takes
- 21:30the fastball it's in too close
- 21:31and we're underway in Olympic
- 21:33Stadium in Montreal as the Cubs
- 21:34try to end a five game losing
- 21:36streak.
- 21:40But you're missing inside of the
- 21:41first one the windup here's a
- 21:42fastball missed at the knees
- 21:44outside ball to no strikes.
- 21:48Harry Dunlop coaching at first
- 21:50base.
- 21:50Penis Lowry at third first base
- 21:53umpire Doug Harvey.
- 21:54Here's the windup and the pitch
- 21:56takes it high ball three the
- 21:58leadoff man one more we'll get a
- 22:01man on.
- 22:02Crow Marty Dawson and Valentine
- 22:04and left center and right Tony
- 22:06Perez at first cash at second
- 22:08here's the pitch there is a
- 22:10strike call better high way and
- 22:12Yvonne not too thrilled with
- 22:13that call.
- 22:16Cash at second fire at short
- 22:18stop and the rookie up from
- 22:19Denver Stan Pappy playing the
- 22:21third wind up and the big
- 22:23fellow three one pitch taken
- 22:25first strike.
- 22:27It's a lot off after getting
- 22:29behind and now he's run the
- 22:31count for this is a completely
- 22:33carpeted surface here except
- 22:35right around the bases.
- 22:37So the windup in the three to
- 22:39delivery takes outside a
- 22:42breaking ball and he winds up
- 22:44coaxing a walk to lead off the
- 22:47ballgame.
- 22:49It's one of the big fellows
- 22:50problems this year.
- 22:51He has walked 60 men and 152
- 22:54winnings striking out 111.
- 22:58Larry Bittner mentioned in the
- 23:00last three ballgames six hits
- 23:02in 12 at bats four runs batted
- 23:06in and last night he got his
- 23:07tenth home run of the year that
- 23:10was leading off the third and
- 23:11that was a final cut run of the
- 23:12night.
- 23:13Now a two ninety five hitter
- 23:15for the season with 53 runs
- 23:17batted in throw the first base
- 23:19and Yvonne is back in plenty of
- 23:21time.
- 23:22That's Leonard I'm firing at
- 23:23second base tonight and Nick
- 23:24Colossus third down the line
- 23:26three hundred twenty five feet
- 23:28to a high bright green wall.
- 23:31Quiches first pitch that takes
- 23:33a strike a fastball tomorrow of
- 23:37course will be at New York
- 23:39finish the suspended game cause
- 23:40for the blackout and Herman
- 23:42Franks and Barney Schultz is
- 23:43pitching coach still not quite
- 23:45sure who will start that
- 23:47suspended game tomorrow.
- 23:49Depending on who has the arm
- 23:50that isn't tired I guess curve
- 23:52by Twichell and he misses low and
- 23:54inside ball one strike one kind
- 23:56of a slow worker straightaway
- 23:58center field it's four hundred
- 24:00and four and the power rally is
- 24:02three hundred seventy five feet
- 24:04here at Olympic Stadium.
- 24:07All one strike one pitch coming
- 24:09up the Hays is pretty good lead
- 24:10doesn't go but her takes in a
- 24:12tie ball to strike one on Larry
- 24:16we're going to have to wait a
- 24:16while to let Ted Turner capture
- 24:23the America's Cup.
- 24:26He didn't get across the finish
- 24:27line in time today under the
- 24:29five and a half hour time limit
- 24:30even though he had a big lead so
- 24:32they have to run it over.
- 24:33He has this goes better on the
- 24:35hit and run swings and fouls it
- 24:36out of play ball to strike to
- 24:42you know thank you.
- 24:43Five and a half hours you've
- 24:44got to do the whole thing over
- 24:45again.
- 24:45The last time they had to do
- 24:46that.
- 24:47Well he told me it was in 1958
- 24:51and just declare this one today
- 24:53on no race.
- 24:58Lucky should have gotten a crew
- 24:59out there and they could have
- 25:00blown hard enough to get that
- 25:01thing across due to delivery
- 25:04fastball and Larry with a big
- 25:05swing fouls it back and then had
- 25:07to catch his batting helmet as
- 25:08it came popping off his head.
- 25:18That's infielder Bobby Valentine
- 25:20by the way underwent successful
- 25:22surgery yesterday at two bone
- 25:25spurs removed from his right
- 25:27ankle Bobby Valentine.
- 25:28Here's the pitch swing and a
- 25:29foul comes back into the back
- 25:30stop.
- 25:35Back in nineteen seventy three
- 25:37when Bobby who started his
- 25:38career with the Dodgers had
- 25:40moved down the coast to the
- 25:41California Angels seventy three
- 25:43and separate a broken leg and
- 25:45those bone spurs were a result
- 25:46of that.
- 25:47They got him earlier this year
- 25:48from San Diego in the Dave
- 25:50Kingman deal and Kingman from
- 25:54the Padres go to first to
- 25:55California played 10 games to
- 25:57the Angels and now the big
- 25:58fellow is back in New York with
- 26:00the Yankees.
- 26:01They got him on waivers to two
- 26:08pitch coming up that their
- 26:10swings and a line drive in the
- 26:11right field for a base hit the
- 26:12haste is left to stop at second
- 26:14base.
- 26:15Now it's Valentine powering the
- 26:17throw in and the Cubs have
- 26:19runners at first and second with
- 26:21nobody out and Bill Buckner the
- 26:23batter.
- 26:26Situation last night when he
- 26:27sacrificed in the off inning
- 26:32that if he had not been able to
- 26:33sacrifice in that first pitch
- 26:35that he was going to they were
- 26:37going to put the hit and run on
- 26:38to the next one.
- 26:39He said it's probably just as
- 26:40well they did have me sacrifice
- 26:41because he said I was swinging
- 26:43the bat so badly.
- 26:47See what they have a left handed
- 26:48hitting veteran do now.
- 26:50Buckner batting to ninety seven
- 26:52for the year was officially 0
- 26:54for 5 last night as 11 homers
- 26:57this year and driven in 58 runs
- 26:59club runners at first and second
- 27:01with nobody out on a walk and a
- 27:02single off Wayne Quitchell.
- 27:04Here's the pitch takes and it's
- 27:06a strike on the inside corner at
- 27:07the belt but with a hundred and
- 27:10nine base hits this year Jerry
- 27:13Brownice who has been battling
- 27:15a slump in the on deck circle
- 27:17over in the third base side
- 27:19carpet looks like it's still
- 27:20soaked from the heavy rains that
- 27:22fell here yesterday.
- 27:24All one delivery Buckner swings
- 27:26pulls a ground ball to cash could
- 27:28be a double play over the spire
- 27:29the relay and it is double play
- 27:33one hundred and nineteenth of
- 27:34the year by the Expos hold a
- 27:37hard ground ball to Davey Cash
- 27:40the H.S. is on a third but
- 27:42they're too gone and Jerry
- 27:44Morales stepping in.
- 27:45He's stepping in and oh man.
- 27:55Need a base hit now or an error
- 27:57while pitcher pass ball to get
- 27:58on the scoreboard.
- 28:00Brownice batting to 90 then
- 28:02homers 68 runs batted in and his
- 28:05last RBI came at San Francisco
- 28:09when he hit that 10th homer of
- 28:11the year.
- 28:11That was August the 26th and
- 28:15that is a powerful long slump
- 28:20right under leveling that bat
- 28:22rather nervously now cocks it
- 28:23high.
- 28:23Here's the pitch by Tweedle and
- 28:25he takes a strike at the knees
- 28:26on the outside corner.
- 28:31A walk a single but Buckner
- 28:33pulls a hard ground ball onto
- 28:36the carpet to cash they converted
- 28:37into a double play.
- 28:38Oh one delivery curve and he
- 28:40almost threw it away back ended
- 28:41by Gary Carter ball one strike
- 28:44one.
- 28:48Gary Koosman slid to start the
- 28:50suspended game for the Mets
- 28:51tomorrow and they regularly
- 28:53scheduled game to follow it.
- 28:56Herman Franks and Barney Schultz
- 28:57still not sure.
- 28:58One one delivery swung out at a
- 29:00high pop foul it is out of play
- 29:03behind the Montreal dugout one
- 29:04and two on Morales.
- 29:06They're not quite sure who will
- 29:07start that suspended game
- 29:09tomorrow.
- 29:10Well it depends on who doesn't
- 29:11have a tired arm who has to be
- 29:14used here tonight.
- 29:16Rick Russell is scheduled to go
- 29:18against Koosman in the regular
- 29:19day scheduled game.
- 29:22Nino Espinosa who drove in a run
- 29:25last night against the Phillies
- 29:27shut him out on three hits and
- 29:29scheduled a pitch one of the
- 29:29game Sunday against the Cubs two
- 29:32out of one two pitch breaking
- 29:34ball low and outside ball to
- 29:36strike to what you're a big
- 29:38gangly fellow and sometimes he
- 29:40looks like he's just kind of
- 29:41shot putting the ball.
- 29:48Come on little guy get a hit to
- 29:51off runner at third and to to
- 29:53delivery curveball low and
- 29:55outside it's three and two.
- 29:59Bobby Mercer the on deck circle
- 30:02and let's hope that he'll bat
- 30:03here in this first inning as the
- 30:05Cubs try to get on the board
- 30:06and still shooting for their
- 30:08seventy sixth win of the year.
- 30:11Glitcho glances over at third
- 30:12steps back the right hander
- 30:13winds three to pitch swung on
- 30:15and it pulls the ground ball to
- 30:16the third baseman Stan Pappy
- 30:18throws the president of the dirt
- 30:20gets away from him the Cubs take
- 30:21the lead and Morales will wind
- 30:24up at second base.
- 30:28Well that be a run batted in an
- 30:30error against Tony Perez or
- 30:32against Stan Pappy on a throw
- 30:35by the third baseman.
- 30:38I have a little help though.
- 30:40What about it.
- 30:42We'll take it.
- 30:44It's all we can get.
- 30:52Well they got their hundred
- 30:53and nineteenth double play of
- 30:54the year in this inning.
- 30:55That is the much hundred and
- 30:56seventeenth error.
- 30:59Pappy when he was at Denver this
- 31:02year playing under Jim Marshall
- 31:03and they won their championship
- 31:05with a shortstop.
- 31:10Man pretty upset with himself
- 31:12after that bad throw that went
- 31:14into the dirt and Perez trying
- 31:15to back end it couldn't handle
- 31:16it Mercer steps in and he takes
- 31:17switch his first pitch low and
- 31:19inside ball one like Morales
- 31:22Mercer has been in a slump in so
- 31:24far as driving in runs and do
- 31:26not credit Morales with a run
- 31:27batted it on that one.
- 31:29Bobby last night one for four
- 31:31hitting two six hundred and
- 31:32four hitting two sixty eight
- 31:35tender.
- 31:36I told up in a swing he can't do
- 31:37it ball one strike one.
- 31:38The pitch was down low and in on
- 31:40him.
- 31:43Morales last got an RBI on
- 31:45August the 26th.
- 31:46Mercer's last one came on
- 31:47August the 22nd.
- 31:54Ramos in scoring position as a
- 31:55result of the air and the Cubs
- 31:56leading one to nothing with two
- 31:58off which was one one pitch a
- 31:59slow curve into the dirt.
- 32:00Morales.
- 32:03All to strike one and he said
- 32:05don't control the batman
- 32:06whatsoever.
- 32:12Steve on a various in the on deck
- 32:13circle the outfield around to
- 32:15the right and deep for Mercer
- 32:18the look at second that
- 32:19Morales here's twitches pitch
- 32:21takes the fastball inside above
- 32:23the knees ball three strike one
- 32:26perspire the shortstop playing
- 32:27to pull up the middle and he is
- 32:29going to get a little bit of a
- 32:30little bit of a
- 32:31little bit of a
- 32:32toe just on that white strap of
- 32:33a designate for the outfield
- 32:35grass would start.
- 32:36David Cash has planted his feet
- 32:39right astride that line over the
- 32:40right side of the infield.
- 32:42Three one delivery with two out
- 32:44and Mercer swings and he fouls
- 32:47that one back out of play ball
- 32:48three strike two five decisions
- 32:53between the Cubs and the New
- 32:54York Mets this weekend and then
- 32:55the Cubs will go to Philadelphia
- 32:57to close out this lengthy road
- 32:58for the Cubs and the New York
- 32:59Mets.
- 33:00They're going to play the
- 33:01first base game of the year
- 33:02Friday before coming back home
- 33:04to open up next Friday at
- 33:06Wrigley Field final home stand
- 33:09of the year three to pitch
- 33:10swung out and a little bouncing
- 33:12ball back to the pitcher picks
- 33:14it up with a little underhand
- 33:16possible the first base and the
- 33:18Cubs are retired in the first
- 33:20inning.
- 33:21Thanks to some Montreal help
- 33:23they get a run on a walk one hit
- 33:26and a half.
- 33:29At the end of a half putting a
- 33:30play bounce off to the bounce
- 33:32thinking his 11th win of the
- 33:33year with the score the Cubs
- 33:34won Montreal nothing.
- 33:37If homeowners waited for

- 34:46You'll be pleased in here against
- 34:47the Expos and won at Berkeley
- 34:49Field against them.
- 34:50Worked a total of 17 innings
- 34:52against Montreal given a twenty
- 34:54three hits and eleven runs.
- 34:56Three and oh and one other stock
- 34:58he wound up with no decision.
- 35:01Just as he did in his last start
- 35:03of the season Saturday at
- 35:05Wrigley Field against the Mets
- 35:07not involved in the decision
- 35:08there he left with the ball with
- 35:10the Cubs leading the ballgame
- 35:11but they wound up losing it by
- 35:13a score of seven to two.
- 35:18Bottom hundred eighty eight
- 35:20innings of work and one hundred
- 35:21eighty two base hits for the year
- 35:22and an earned on average of just
- 35:24over four.
- 35:25Big right end delivers a swing
- 35:27and a miss by Davey Cash on a
- 35:29slider away strike one count
- 35:31cash one for six last night
- 35:33veteran hitting two eighty nine
- 35:36driven in thirty nine runs as
- 35:38no homers there's a swing and a
- 35:39ground ball base hit the top on
- 35:41a fastball and drilled it to the
- 35:43second base side of Manny Creel
- 35:45October Allison center field to
- 35:51each team with one hit and the
- 35:53rookies Dan Pappy was guilty of
- 35:55that struggling air and would
- 35:57have retired the Cubs in the
- 35:58first inning without any run
- 36:01coming across steps in.
- 36:02Let's see what they're going to
- 36:03have him do.
- 36:04Twenty six year old right hander
- 36:07hope for six last night.
- 36:09They have a sacrifice in the
- 36:10twelfth inning forced the man at
- 36:12second.
- 36:13Then he scored the winning run
- 36:14on a cripple looked out at his
- 36:16helmet taken off with a high
- 36:18inside fastball going up up in
- 36:21the carpet in front of the plate
- 36:22picks it up looks again down at
- 36:24coach a third to get his sign
- 36:29bottom's last victory game against
- 36:33San Diego August the sixth goes
- 36:39to first base.
- 36:40Davey Cash back in plenty of time
- 36:42at the head first slide a little
- 36:48left bottom had a little shoulder
- 36:50problem for a while.
- 36:52Right as Devers and Mrs. with a
- 36:54fastball loan away to the rookie
- 36:56Stan Pappy Andre Dawson tripled
- 37:00and drove in that winning run
- 37:01last night in the on back circle
- 37:03over in the first base side
- 37:05bottom with a runner at first
- 37:07nobody out a two old pitch coming
- 37:09up as a base hit.
- 37:13That's my name.
- 37:14Real out in the center field and
- 37:17happy given the green light on
- 37:18two and all drills one to the
- 37:21second base out of real runners
- 37:28that first and second nobody out
- 37:35here's last night hitting here
- 37:36all for the Expos big right hand
- 37:38or Andre Dawson to its last night
- 37:44including that game winning
- 37:45triple that gave him his 58th run
- 37:48batted in for the year.
- 37:50Dawson batting to 78 with 16
- 37:52homers bottom looks at the runner
- 37:57second delivers a curve but it's
- 37:59too high ball one.
- 38:09Dubs in a bit of a jam here in
- 38:11the first inning on two singles
- 38:12by Debbie Cash and rookie Stan
- 38:14Pappy is a stretch the delivery
- 38:16one out he hit one on the fist
- 38:18about it.
- 38:18Bucke coming over to the dugout
- 38:20and he grabs that ball one handed
- 38:22runner tag from second goes to
- 38:23third the throw not quite in time
- 38:25he's in there with a head first
- 38:26line but there anticipated that
- 38:29by Davy Cash but there wasn't
- 38:31anything he could do about it.
- 38:35We'll the native throw cash got
- 38:38in there ahead of the tag by
- 38:40on a bear with alert baseball
- 38:47tying around at third and Tony
- 38:48Perez stepping in he should wind
- 38:52up this year the only man in
- 38:53Major League history to drive in
- 38:5690 or more runs for 11 consecutive
- 38:58seasons as 85 this year hitting
- 39:02295 for the year.
- 39:04Throw the first and Pappy back in
- 39:06time since the All-Star break
- 39:10Mr. Perez hitting 349 there's a
- 39:14pitcher swing at a best to pull
- 39:16off on that one.
- 39:17He's jumping on it.
- 39:22Whereas last night was one for
- 39:23four 18 homers is here.
- 39:27Why is that right foot deep in
- 39:28the batter's box almost in the
- 39:29corner of it.
- 39:30That post dance it's working the
- 39:33fingers on that bat bottoms every
- 39:34time takes it inside ball one
- 39:37strike one.
- 39:40You've got to be pretty thrilled
- 39:41loading it with the anticipation
- 39:43of achieving that mark and RBI
- 39:4690 for 11 straight year.
- 39:48He is and he's mighty proud of
- 39:50that twelve hundred RBI record
- 39:51also that either bottom of made
- 39:57a throw to first base to keep
- 39:58Pappy close one out one one did
- 40:01every takes it low ball to
- 40:04strike one.
- 40:06Now the Spamans I and do up next
- 40:08tying run over a third
- 40:09represented by veteran Davey
- 40:11Cash.
- 40:13The kids could use a double
- 40:14player to say the least rookie
- 40:17Mike Gordon doing the catching
- 40:18sets up bottom pitch for his
- 40:21takes in at the strike letter
- 40:23high away from him.
- 40:24All to strike to get a few cup
- 40:29fans reading here tonight
- 40:31putting the Matthews family
- 40:34Bill and Gerta Matthews bottom
- 40:39to pitch rest takes the fastball
- 40:42into tight ball three strike to
- 40:47well he's done an outstanding
- 40:48job both in driving and runs and
- 40:51with his batting average of two
- 40:52ninety five he is one father
- 40:54that is prone to strike out a
- 40:57lot.
- 40:57Let's see a bottom can dispose
- 40:59of him here with one out runners
- 41:00at first and third three to
- 41:02delivery.
- 41:03Let it go.
- 41:03Swing and a miss Gordon throw
- 41:05bounces gets away from three of
- 41:07those to center field.
- 41:09Happy gets up and goes to third
- 41:11and Davey Cash drops up the
- 41:12line with the tying one of the
- 41:14ballgame we were hopefully
- 41:24anticipating he struck out and
- 41:26happy going on the pitch.
- 41:29Good have been nailed.
- 41:31Gordon felt short of the mark
- 41:33bounce pass real into center
- 41:35field.
- 41:40They're on that throw of course
- 41:42and here's that a fine playing
- 41:44and hitting a hard shot that
- 41:45skips off of Steve Monteveras
- 41:48and then bounces over into the
- 41:49box seat and that's going to be
- 41:51a ground rule double and let's
- 41:52see if Monteveras is going to be
- 41:53all right as Montreal has taken
- 41:55the lead.
- 41:57Valentine getting a very hard
- 41:59shot came off of that wet carpet
- 42:03he's already had one in the eye
- 42:05this year and I hope he didn't
- 42:06get another one there.
- 42:07Oh that one just glanced off of
- 42:09the bill of the cap.
- 42:10Number 72 and runs by the game
- 42:12for the year.
- 42:13For Ellis Valentine with a
- 42:14double on the first pitch drone
- 42:17and the Expos have a two to one
- 42:19lead in the bottom of inning
- 42:20number one.
- 42:27Valentine decides that he can do
- 42:29without the batting element.
- 42:33Gary Carter to be the hitter and
- 42:35let's pause a moment for
- 42:36station identification.
- 42:37This is the W.G.N. Chicago Cubs
- 42:39baseball network and this is W.G.
- 42:42and Radio Chicago at one minute
- 42:43past seven.
- 42:49Two singles and a double and
- 42:51each team has been guilty of an
- 42:52error and we're in the first
- 42:53inning.
- 42:54There's a swing and a high fly
- 42:55ball around us on the run so
- 42:56Bobby Mercer and it's much to
- 42:58his hair.
- 42:59How's it end to retire the side.
- 43:02But two runs and two runs.
- 43:04And the bases brought two runs
- 43:07on three hits one cover one man
- 43:10left in the bases and at the end
- 43:12the one mockery all leads the
- 43:13Cubs 2 to 1.
- 43:17Think you could eat 40 bananas
- 43:18in 39 minutes.
- 43:20Anthony Pig did it.
- 43:22He set that record in 1967 says
- 43:25so right here in the Guinness
- 43:26Book of World Records.
- 43:28How could anyone eat so much so
- 43:30fast.
- 43:31This is Mike Pyle saying we'll
- 43:33find the answer to that.
- 43:34But there are some records that
- 43:35are easily explained.
- 43:37For instance the current record
- 43:39for selling new Oldsmobile.
- 43:41It's held by while olds and
- 43:42Libertyville while sells more
- 43:44new Oldsmobile than any other
- 43:46dealer in the world.
- 43:47Why.
- 43:48Why do people come from Chicago
- 43:50from all over the state even
- 43:52from neighboring states to buy
- 43:53their new Oldsmobile from while
- 43:56you won't find the answer in the
- 43:57record book but you will find it
- 43:59in Libertyville Illinois home
- 44:00of the world's largest Oldsmobile
- 44:02dealer while old plan to drive
- 44:05out real soon.
- 44:06You'll probably get out to
- 44:07Libertyville faster than it
- 44:08takes.
- 44:09Anthony Figg eat 40 bananas while
- 44:12those selling out all or eighty
- 44:14eight to ninety eight at never
- 44:16before and never again low prices.
- 44:22The amount of errors is going to
- 44:23be leading off the Cubs here
- 44:25against Wayne Pichel.
- 44:27He's heading to ninety five with
- 44:280 for 6 last night.
- 44:30We dropped a few points before
- 44:32the Yankees hit any trail than
- 44:33the rookie catcher.
- 44:36Boston is New York tonight.
- 44:37Louis Tion going for the Red Sox
- 44:39who dropped the first two games
- 44:40of that big series against the
- 44:42Yankees Mike Torres 16 and 12
- 44:45for the year going for the
- 44:46Yanks.
- 44:49Baltimore at Toronto Grimsley
- 44:51against Plancy for the Blue Jays
- 44:53and there's no score at Toronto
- 44:55bottom of inning number two and
- 44:59Oakland has taken a four to
- 45:00five lead at Kansas City at the
- 45:03end of two innings of play in
- 45:05their first game by the blue for
- 45:06the A's six is 15th one of the
- 45:09year tonight against Andy
- 45:10Hassler who's nine and five and
- 45:12has to yielded two runs in each
- 45:14of the first two innings.
- 45:16Kansas City in danger of having
- 45:17that long winning streak of 14
- 45:19in a row snap and that first
- 45:22game of the twine I double
- 45:23header at Kansas City tonight by
- 45:26the Oakland A's Baltimore by the
- 45:28way is shooting for its eighth
- 45:30place tonight.
- 45:30They've moved into second place
- 45:32last night as the Yankees
- 45:34particularly Reggie Jackson
- 45:35disposed of Boston once more
- 45:37Baltimore now two and a half out
- 45:39of the Red Sox three and a half
- 45:41there's a swing at a deep drive
- 45:43in the left center field little
- 45:44Warren Cromarty races out reaches
- 45:46up all that in one end and out
- 45:49of errors is out on a long line
- 45:50drive to the left fielder to
- 45:52open up the second inning Manny
- 45:54Creel stepping in.
- 45:56He was 0 for 5 last night.
- 45:57He's got a good pace.
- 46:00Seven homers for the year 56 runs
- 46:02batted in.
- 46:07You know pitchers aren't the only
- 46:08ones that need a good change of
- 46:09pace.
- 46:11Everyone ought to follow the
- 46:12routine just a little bit and you
- 46:13can do that yourself by spending
- 46:15a fun field day out of friendly
- 46:17Wrigley Field and then there aren't
- 46:18very many of them left for this
- 46:20season either.
- 46:21First pitch trio is going to take
- 46:23all the way and it's a strike at
- 46:24the knees.
- 46:25The Cubs will be entertaining the
- 46:27Pittsburgh Pirates and the
- 46:28apparent Eastern Division
- 46:29champion Philadelphia Phillies on
- 46:32the next home stand that starts
- 46:33one week from tomorrow against
- 46:35Pittsburgh.
- 46:37That's for again the Phillies
- 46:39they'll do teams will be there to
- 46:41extend the club home stand through
- 46:43the 28th of September.
- 46:45But you'll reach his back
- 46:46delivers a slow curve and trio
- 46:47looks at it for strike to only
- 46:52six games left in the home
- 46:53schedule.
- 46:54Nothing into the count.
- 46:56Now he swings and fouls that one
- 46:58off the middle Gary Carter.
- 47:01Still own two in the Cubs second
- 47:03baseman Phillies got a run in the
- 47:05bottom of the first inning
- 47:05against the Mets tonight on
- 47:09behalf of the left hander Randy
- 47:11Lurch.
- 47:12Great Swan going for the Mets
- 47:14who are now batting in the top of
- 47:15the second inning and trailing
- 47:17one to nothing at Philadelphia.
- 47:19Oh to delivery fastball swung on
- 47:21fouls it back up another one.
- 47:23Fouls it back up under the back
- 47:24stop this afternoon as we
- 47:27mentioned earlier Houston knocked
- 47:28off San Francisco six to three
- 47:31fence getting the victory over
- 47:32Ed Hallecky and the Houston
- 47:34Astros very hopeful winding up
- 47:37in second place in that Western
- 47:38division picked up a half game
- 47:41with that one.
- 47:42There's a curve ball and he takes
- 47:43it outside one and two pick up a
- 47:46half game against the Cincinnati
- 47:48Reds.
- 47:49There are three games behind him
- 47:50pending the outcome of the
- 47:51Cincinnati game tonight at Los
- 47:54Angeles one out and a one to
- 47:56delivery takes the fastball high
- 47:59ball to strike to what you'll
- 48:07an awful lot of basketball when
- 48:09he was in school out of Oregon
- 48:12and occasionally still
- 48:13officiates that game in the off
- 48:15season to to delivery swung out
- 48:17a fastball off the end of the
- 48:19back those fouls into the seats
- 48:20of the first base side.
- 48:23The Cubs were gifted with a run
- 48:25in the first inning started out
- 48:26promisingly with a walk and a
- 48:28single and Buckner grounded
- 48:30into a double play ball.
- 48:32Morales had a grounder to the
- 48:33third baseman whose throw was
- 48:35errant and permitted the Haysers
- 48:37to score and Morales to reach
- 48:39second.
- 48:40Then the inning ended with
- 48:41Mercer tapping out weekly the
- 48:42pitcher.
- 48:43Here's a swing and three a
- 48:44pulitzer ground ball back
- 48:45headed by Spire long throw.
- 48:47He is safe at first base.
- 48:48Spire having to make that peg
- 48:50from beyond that stripe on the
- 48:52that would designate the outfield
- 48:54grass and Creos on with an
- 48:56infield single with one out in
- 48:58the second inning.
- 48:59Hit number two for the Cubs
- 49:01brings up the rookie catcher
- 49:02Mike Gordon at St. Louis the
- 49:06Cardinals batting in the bottom
- 49:07of the sixth inning of their
- 49:08first game against the Pittsburgh
- 49:09Pirates and the Pirates are
- 49:11holding a one to nothing lead
- 49:14and Tony Garofalo the cup
- 49:16trainer has to come out now to
- 49:18attend a Manny Trejo looks like
- 49:20he might have hurt an ankle
- 49:22running that one out.
- 49:23Well this is two for two two
- 49:25innings and Tony's out twice.
- 49:27Yeah he must have set an all
- 49:29time record this year.
- 49:32But the new facilities that
- 49:33they have here and the Cubs were
- 49:35here in the first two trips they
- 49:36were using temporary quarters
- 49:38to say the least.
- 49:40But now the visiting clubhouse
- 49:41has been pretty much finished
- 49:43off and that he almost has enough
- 49:46room in there by God for all of
- 49:47the fellows that need to be
- 49:48treated looks like Creos going
- 49:52to decide he'll stick it out
- 50:01one away and Mike Gordon the
- 50:03rookie catcher made a throw
- 50:06bouncing into second base left
- 50:09handed hitter who was hit last
- 50:12night and three at bat and then
- 50:14earlier in the air was all for
- 50:15four with the Cubs so he is
- 50:16looking for his first major
- 50:17league hit a strong left hander
- 50:20comes from the state of Maine
- 50:22just 24 years of age and only
- 50:24celebrated that 24th birthday
- 50:26just a few days ago.

- 50:30at first base against Wichita
- 50:33fires and misses low and inside
- 50:34ball one center fielder and a
- 50:37Dawson shallowed up considerably
- 50:39for Gordon who did not have a
- 50:41good hitting year with the Cubs
- 50:44farm club at Wichita.
- 50:46Here's a pitch swung on out of
- 50:48the middle Carter and the count
- 50:50goes to ball one strike one.
- 50:53Well the Mets tied up the
- 50:54Phillies with a run in the top
- 50:56of the second inning at
- 50:56Philadelphia.
- 50:58Now the Phillies at bat in the
- 51:00bottom of inning number two and
- 51:01it's one to one.
- 51:03John Candelaria going for the
- 51:05Pirates tonight at St. Louis in
- 51:06the first game against Eric
- 51:07Rasmussen one one pitch swung on
- 51:09a bouncing ball to Davey Cash
- 51:11gets it close to second and no

- 51:37hits and three runs about it in

- 54:53Warren Cromarty left-handed hitting outfielder.
- 54:57With an eight game hitting streak, he'll be leading off bottom third of the batting order to face Bill Bonham.
- 55:03Cromarty was one for three last night, and he's hitting 281 for the year.
- 55:08With five homers and 48 runs about it in.
- 55:15While the Cubs have been in a tailspin, that's just prior to the All-Star break,
- 55:20the Montly All-Ball Club now since the 1st of July has won game over the 500 mark.
- 55:27The Cubs hopeful of finishing out the rest of this 1977 season on the upfeed.
- 55:35They need a victory here and a few of them in New York and the Philadelphia,
- 55:42and then they'll be concluding the season with competition against the Pills and the Pirates.
- 55:49Still locked at 75 wins for the year.
- 55:54Little Warren Cromarty stepping in and Bonham's first pitch.
- 55:59Swung out, a hard ground ball.
- 56:01Kelleher at second base goes to his right, picks it up and throws to first.
- 56:05So McKelleher has replaced Matty Treo, who got that infield single that came up limping, then stayed in the ball game.
- 56:14And Kelleher was taken off the disabled list just recently, making his first appearance in the field.
- 56:20He has come in a couple of times as a pinch runner.
- 56:24Remember he took a bad hopper that came up and broke the thumb on his hand.
- 56:30That day they had brooded an error against him and then later that night they changed it to a single.
- 56:38Little Mick back in the lineup at second base here in the second inning and he's just come up with a nice play to retire Cromarty.
- 56:46Now Chris Spire, the shortstop stepping in, drove in a run last night with a sacrifice fly.
- 56:51And the right-hander takes the first pitch of strike.
- 56:54He is not hitting well this year, batting average for Spire, the former giant of just 2.32.
- 57:00Five homers, swings, fouls, a pass ball. A lot of play to the right side.
- 57:06The RBI that he got last night was only his 31st of the season.
- 57:10That includes his work with the Giants before he came over here for Tim Foley.
- 57:17Bottom's next pitch is a pass ball too high. Ball one, strike two.
- 57:24Kansas City Royals with that sweep last night have taken a nine game lead over the Chicago White Sox.
- 57:33One-two delivery. Curve ball low and outside. Ball two, strike two.
- 57:39Cincinnati still hanging tough. Came up with a victory last night over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 57:44But time is sure running out on the Reds.
- 57:48Two-two pitch. Looks at a strike.
- 57:52Took a long off with that one and Chris Spire just watched it float by a letter high for bottom's second strike out of the night.
- 57:58And that will bring up the pitcher, Wayne Quitchell.
- 58:06Next Monday night, which is to be an off night for the Cubs between New York and Philadelphia,
- 58:13going to be the big benefit dinner club.
- 58:18Or benefit dinner of the variety club I should say. It's the Evanston Country Club.
- 58:24Pass ball to Quitchell and he takes it inside at the letters.
- 58:27Well, they'll have a golf outing during the day. That one's completely sold out.
- 58:31To understand that there's still some tickets available for the dinner.
- 58:34Here's the swing and Quitchell pulls the ground ball out of errors to his left.
- 58:37He's got it. Straightens up and pegs and Quitchell kind of loping down the line.
- 58:41The shot down to retire the side in order.
- 58:47If you'd like to try to go to that dinner on Monday, phone Les Lear in Chicago at 828-1190.
- 58:56And here at Montreal's Olympic Stadium at the end of two innings of play,
- 59:00the X-Bowls lead the Chicago Cubs 2-1.

- 1:00:02You can't beat his deal in the whole USA.
- 1:00:08International, the wheeling-est four-wheel dealer in town.
- 1:00:14Vince White and Louis Boudreaux here with you at Olympic Stadium in Montreal
- 1:00:18in a much better turnout than they had last night,
- 1:00:20a crowd last night of just over 5,200, the smallest in the year here.
- 1:00:24But they have grown well at this new edifice, over 1,300,000.
- 1:00:33And this ball club, Louis, certainly is on the rise, isn't it?
- 1:00:36Yes, it is. They don't need too much to help this ball club become a contender,
- 1:00:42which means that the Eastern Division will be quite an improved division in the near future.
- 1:00:48The Yankees get, or Mets get straightened away, and this ball club, and of course our ball club,
- 1:00:55will challenge Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and St. Louis,
- 1:00:58certainly is on the upgrade with the young ball club they have.
- 1:01:02Here's DeJesus leading off the third inning, walked in the first inning.
- 1:01:08Touchdown on the mound, the Cubs have one run, two hits.
- 1:01:11Exposed, two runs on three hits.
- 1:01:16Both ball clubs have committed one air.
- 1:01:19Fake bunt on the first pitch, but the ball is called a strike by Playdumpire Andy Olson.
- 1:01:28DeJesus will be followed by Bittner and then Buckner.
- 1:01:34Strike one pitch on the way, curveball outside, just missing it, it's one and one.
- 1:01:42Exposed will break their all-time attendance mark this year.
- 1:01:49One-on-one pitch by the big right-hander popped up behind the plate.
- 1:01:54Carter there has room, he has it.
- 1:02:01One out as DeJesus pops out to Carter, the catcher, in foul territory.
- 1:02:07Bittner lined a single into right field and looked as if the Cubs are going to take care of Twitchell very early.
- 1:02:16But with runners on first and second, Buckner hit into a double play.
- 1:02:26Now here's Larry Bittner, former expo, stepping in the batter's box.
- 1:02:35First pitch by the right-hander, fastball strike called, knee-high over the outside corner.
- 1:02:46Exposed play, Bittner straight away.
- 1:02:49One strike pitch, inside and low, and it's one and one.
- 1:02:54Gary Carter doing the catching, Twitchell formerly with the Philadelphia Phillies on the mound.
- 1:03:06The right-hander into the lineup and the pitch, swing and a fly ball deep to center field over Dawson's head.
- 1:03:12He's going back, going back, leaps, it bounces against the wall.
- 1:03:16Bittner around second, he will go to third.
- 1:03:18Instead, he tags up as what a throw that Dawson threw from the warning track over 400 feet away from the plate.
- 1:03:30And one hop and a short hop all the way to probably a third to hold Bittner to a double.
- 1:03:38Bittner now getting closer to that 300 mark in average.
- 1:03:43He started this ballgame hitting 295, and he has two for two, and that was his 25th double of the season.
- 1:03:53He's on second base with a tying run for Buckner.
- 1:03:58That's the third hit off Twitchell.
- 1:04:02There's no doubt about that one. It was well tagged.
- 1:04:05Dawson, a very fine outfielder who can go back on a ball very well and with great speed, couldn't catch up to that one.
- 1:04:13Curved ball taken by Buckner inside, ball one.
- 1:04:21This guy really has some pains at the plate.
- 1:04:26He had a sore wrist, sore ankle, pulled a hamstring earlier during the year.
- 1:04:35He has a record for throwing bats at baseballs being pitched to him.
- 1:04:39There's a strike called, and it's one and one now to Buckner.
- 1:04:47Bittner at second base, one out, third inning.
- 1:04:54Buckner still has his sign from Carter.
- 1:04:56Checks Bittner at second, and here's the one ball, one strike pitch.
- 1:05:00Curved ball, a swing, and a foul ball into the dugout behind first base.
- 1:05:08Buckner really pulled that one.
- 1:05:16And now one ball, two strikes.
- 1:05:24This is where Buckner is at his best with two strikes out of him. He guards that plate.
- 1:05:30If he is pulled on the pitch, he normally will throw the bat at the ball, try to foul it.
- 1:05:35He swings and fouls that one in the same spot behind first base in the exposed dugout.
- 1:05:42So the count remains one and two.
- 1:05:47After the Jesus popped out, Bittner doubled over the center fielder's head and is on second base.
- 1:05:59Twitchell taking a little more time on this particular sign. Now he's ready.
- 1:06:04Here's the pitch to Buckner. Curved ball, another one hit into the dugout.
- 1:06:10Three successive foul balls hit into the exposed dugout.
- 1:06:23These are very long dugouts here at Olympic Stadium.
- 1:06:34Now the outfielders are pulling around a couple of steps.
- 1:06:39Twitchell is ready. He sets the kick and the pitch. Swing and a miss.
- 1:06:43He gets Buckner on a low-breaking curve ball for the first strike out of the ball game for Twitchell.
- 1:06:52So with two outs, it's going to be up to Jerry Morales.
- 1:06:56He was safe on the throwing here by the third baseman Pappy, which allowed the Jesus to score from third base with two outs in the first inning.
- 1:07:05Then Montreal came back to score two in the bottom of the first inning.
- 1:07:10It's now two to one exposed.
- 1:07:15First pitch to Morales. Curved ball, tapped foul, back to the screen.
- 1:07:23Strike one. Morales and Mercer have been stuck on the RBI column.
- 1:07:31Morales with 68 RBIs, Mercer with 82.
- 1:07:41Morales levels that bat over the plate as Twitchell gets his sign from Carter.
- 1:07:45Bittner extends his lead at second base.
- 1:07:48Here's the 0-1 pitch now by Twitchell.
- 1:07:51Sidearm pitch outside.
- 1:07:54He really lowered the boom then as he dropped his arm around his knees and fired the ball outside.
- 1:08:02One and one to count.
- 1:08:05Carter going out to talk to his pitcher.
- 1:08:14One and one to count to Jerry.
- 1:08:22Twitchell shakes his head yes. He's a slow worker.
- 1:08:25The pitch out in the way. Overhand curveball for a strike call.
- 1:08:29Broke sharply over the outside corner. One ball, two strikes.
- 1:08:38Bittner extending his lead at second base. He's down the Astro curve.
- 1:08:42Expos aren't paying any attention to him. Twitchell's the only one that's really looking at him.
- 1:08:47Now the pitch. Fast ball low outside. Two and two to count.
- 1:08:52Seems as if the Expos are keeping the fast balls away from Morales and giving him a lot of breaking stuff.
- 1:08:59Sliders and curveball.
- 1:09:03They're counting out two and two.
- 1:09:10Here's the pitch. Swinging a foul ball down the right-tail line. It's out of play.
- 1:09:16Morales guarding that play.
- 1:09:26Two outs. Bittner on second.
- 1:09:30Bittner has two of the three hits off Twitchell so far tonight.
- 1:09:35Hit right here to pick up a run. Here's the pitch. Curveball.
- 1:09:38He swings and misses on a high curveball outside, striking out.
- 1:09:44Twitchell strikes out two in the third inning after the double by Bittner.
- 1:09:49No runs, one hit. One man left on base.
- 1:09:53At the end of two and a half innings of play, Montreal 2 comes one.
- 1:10:04Water from God's country. Sparkling, pure spring water.
- 1:10:10Gottlieb Heilemann spent years looking for water like this.
- 1:10:14He found it in La Crosse, Wisconsin in 1853.
- 1:10:19Heilemann still uses this water today to pure brew, double brew a great light beer called Old Style
- 1:10:27in a traditional old world way called Kroisening.
- 1:10:31Kroisening is the most natural way to brew beer and the most expensive.
- 1:10:36But at Old Style we don't aim to make the most beer, only the best.
- 1:10:42That's why we use Kroisening and sparkling, pure Wisconsin spring water.
- 1:10:47Taste the difference they make. Try Old Style. Pure brewed in God's country.
- 1:10:56G. Heilemann Brewing Company, La Crosse, Wisconsin.
- 1:11:03Both teams have batted around in two innings.
- 1:11:07So in the third it will be the leadoff hitter Cash, then Pappy and Dawson for Montreal.
- 1:11:12Let's pause five seconds for station identification.
- 1:11:15This is the WGN Chicago Cubs baseball network.
- 1:11:19And this is WGN Radio Chicago at 729.
- 1:11:25Cash singled up the middle in the first inning as did the hitter next up, Pappy.
- 1:11:32Let's see how Bonham handles him at this particular time at the plate.
- 1:11:37Throws the curveball to open up and it's outside, ball one.
- 1:11:42Cash struck out three times yesterday and that is somewhat of a record.
- 1:11:47He does not strike out very often.
- 1:11:49Here's a swing and a line drive to right field.
- 1:11:52Mercer moving in and he drops the ball.
- 1:11:54The ball went into the light.
- 1:11:59They give him an air. That's a tough air.
- 1:12:01He came in, had the ball, then all of a sudden that ball was into the light.
- 1:12:06He reached up his glove and the ball dropped out of it.
- 1:12:10Mercer wasn't even watching the ball as he turned his head from it as it went into the light.
- 1:12:16But they give him an air.
- 1:12:20Second cup air of the evening.
- 1:12:23And here's the young third baseman, Pappy, at bat.
- 1:12:28Cash, a good base runner.
- 1:12:32The stretch by Bonham.
- 1:12:33Here's the pitch.
- 1:12:34Strike called over the inside corner.
- 1:12:38Cash has 20 stolen bases leading the Expos in that department.
- 1:12:47He gets on base quite a bit.
- 1:12:51Here's the pitch to Pappy, curveball he ducks away from and it's inside.
- 1:12:56One and one to count.
- 1:12:59Cash has 169 hits with 49 bases on balls.
- 1:13:09So you know he's on base quite a bit.
- 1:13:11So at a first he has to dive back and does so safely.
- 1:13:17One of the premier leadoff men in baseball, Dave Cash.
- 1:13:22The one and one pitch now by Bonham.
- 1:13:24Here he goes. Here's a swing and a miss.
- 1:13:26There's Gordon's throw low into the dirt.
- 1:13:28But the play is backed up beautifully by Kelleher as Gordon will have to raise his sights through two throws tonight have been into the dirt at second base.
- 1:13:41Cash is credited with a stolen base.
- 1:13:44Here's 21st and only a fine defensive play by Kelleher who went behind the play to back it up prevented Cash from advancing to third.
- 1:13:55So he's on second now with nobody out.
- 1:13:59The count of one ball two strikes on the hitter.
- 1:14:02Bonham sets. Here's the pitch.
- 1:14:04Fastball inside two and two to count.
- 1:14:10That stolen base breaks a career high for Cash.
- 1:14:15He's had 20 stolen bases equaling his career high in 74 when he was with the Phillies.
- 1:14:23The stretch the two and two pitch lead up.
- 1:14:27Swing and a fly ball to right field.
- 1:14:29Cash is tagging up.
- 1:14:30Morales is there. Gubs it.
- 1:14:32There goes Cash to third. Goes back to third as Morales' throw carries to Ontiveros.
- 1:14:39Cash changed his mind as Morales the outfitter played it well.
- 1:14:45Backed up and then moved in to gain momentum as he caught the ball.
- 1:14:51And he wheeled to third to hold Cash at second.
- 1:14:56Went out and here's Dawson at bat.
- 1:15:04Dawson popped out to Buckner and foul territory his first time at bat.
- 1:15:14Montreal leads two to one. We're in the third inning.
- 1:15:26Bonham looks in, gets a sign from the young catcher Mike Gordon, then checks Cash leading off second base.
- 1:15:34First pitch now to Dawson. Curved ball for a strike call.
- 1:15:38That one broke beautiful over the outside corner.
- 1:15:50The Cubs play Dawson straight away. It was his triple last night that broke up the ball game in the twelfth.
- 1:15:57Fast ball low, one and one to count.
- 1:16:03Montreal two runs, three hits. Cubs one run, three hits.
- 1:16:12Dawson a right-handed hitter, waits the pitch, swing and a miss on a let-up.
- 1:16:20One ball, two strikes.
- 1:16:29Perez in the on-deck circle.
- 1:16:36Cash now extends his lead at second base under the AstroTurf. The pitch on the way is a swing and a tap foul.
- 1:16:43Now to Ossie Virgil, third base coach.
- 1:16:48Tosses it into Olson and wants Olson to take a look at it and he throws it out.
- 1:16:56On the bars as deep at third as is DeJesus deep at shortstop position.
- 1:17:01And at the right side it's Keller who has replaced Trio who turned an ankle or hurt his leg running out his infield hit in the second inning.
- 1:17:12And Buckter is on the first. Here's the pitch by Bonham. Curved ball and he gets them.
- 1:17:18And what a curve ball that was. Bonham has a good curve ball tonight.
- 1:17:22That's three strikeouts for Bill.
- 1:17:25Now with two outs, here's Perez who struck out in the first inning.
- 1:17:35With Perez stepping in the batter's box, comes the outfielders back up a few steps. They play straight away.
- 1:17:45We're in the third inning with Montreal leading 2-1. Bonham into the stretch.
- 1:17:52Now he kicks, here's the pitch outside, ball one to Tony Perez.
- 1:18:03Perez is very durable, guys. This is his 138th game.
- 1:18:11Here's a swing and a one hopper right to Buckner. He has it as it skidded off of that Astor turf.
- 1:18:17But Buckner made the play and then runs up and touches first base for the out.
- 1:18:21In the third inning, no runs, no hits, one air, one man left on base.
- 1:18:26And now at the end of three innings of play, it's Montreal 2-1.

- 1:19:28It's our way of doing business that means true value.
- 1:19:35In the fourth inning, Cubs will send Mercer, Andavarez, and Kelleher to the plate.
- 1:19:45Mercer shot an easy ground ball to Twitchell to close out the first inning.
- 1:19:53Bobby is overdue. Ended this ball game, hitting 268.
- 1:20:02Wayne Pucho on the mound for the Expos. This is his 27th start. He's only completed one game.
- 1:20:14He's allowed 16 home runs to be hit off of this serving.
- 1:20:21He's a side armor. He's been coming up and over mostly to left-handed hitters tonight.
- 1:20:27Here's the first pitch now to Bobby Mercer. Overhand fastball for a strike called over the inside corner.
- 1:20:36Perez deep at first, Cash deep at second for Bobby.
- 1:20:40Valentine's over near this foul line. He's only about 25 feet off of the right field foul line.
- 1:20:46Swing and a pop foul. Back out of play.
- 1:20:53Two strikes to Bobby Mercer. Andavarez waiting in the on-dack circle.
- 1:21:02Twitchell has his side. Now takes that long windup and here's the pitch.
- 1:21:09Curved ball, tap foul down past Harry Dunlop.
- 1:21:18Mercer's leading off the fourth inning. Cubs, after tonight, 17 games left.
- 1:21:28Six with the Pirates, three at home and three at Pittsburgh to close out the season.
- 1:21:33Six with Philadelphia and five with New York. Here's the pitch inside.
- 1:21:38Ball one, strike two. Five with New York coming up this weekend.
- 1:21:44And when the Cubs get back home, they play Pittsburgh three games, Philadelphia three games.
- 1:21:51One and two pitch. Curved ball, a swing, a line drive down the right field line, but it's coding foul.
- 1:21:57Into the exposed bullpen. So the count remains one and two.
- 1:22:1117 left. Boy oh boy. Then we'll be waiting for spring training again.
- 1:22:20The pitch popped up over the third baseman's head.
- 1:22:24Pappy backs up under it, calls forward in fair territory and grabs it.
- 1:22:29Mercer pops out to the third baseman.
- 1:22:33And out, Onoveras, who lined out to Cromartie.
- 1:22:42And Onoveras has been hitting the ball well on this road trip.
- 1:22:46Even though that batting average certainly hasn't gone up too fast.
- 1:22:54He's hitting 295. Entering this ballgame.
- 1:23:02So Twitchell gets his sign from Carter and is all set. Nobody on base. One out.
- 1:23:08The pitch on the way. Curved ball, strike called.
- 1:23:13Twitchell keeping that ball in on Mercer and on Ontaveras here in the fourth inning.
- 1:23:21The pitch once again. Another curved ball. That one is inside.
- 1:23:26Ball one, strike one. Now the count with one out and nobody on base.
- 1:23:35Twitchell's ready. One and one pitch.
- 1:23:40High inside, ball two.
- 1:23:47Comes at 110 games in this series with Montreal.
- 1:23:54He was beating Montreal early in the season.
- 1:24:00Two and one to count to Ontaveras and the two and one pitch on its way.
- 1:24:05High outside, ball three.
- 1:24:14Ball three, strike one. Twitchell has walked one man. That was the leadoff hitter in the ballgame to Jesus.
- 1:24:22There's ball four. That's his second walk of this ballgame.
- 1:24:26So Ontaveras walk. That brings up Kelleher his first time at the plate.
- 1:24:33Kelleher is batting 228. No home runs, eight RBI.
- 1:24:41He replaced the injured Treo. This is his first time at bat. He was talking about his thumb is still tender.
- 1:24:51He's going to have a little sponge wrapped around the bat that he uses.
- 1:24:58Here's a swing and a foul back under the screen. Strike one.
- 1:25:11Kelleher a good hit and run man as Perez is playing behind Ontaveras at first base.
- 1:25:17Exposed two, Cubs one. Here's the pitch curve ball low, one and one to count.
- 1:25:23All runs have been scored in the first inning.
- 1:25:27Cubs with the help of a throwing air by the third baseman scoring their one run.
- 1:25:31And the Expos came back to score two in the first inning.
- 1:25:39Kelleher takes a strike over the outside corner and it's one and two.
- 1:25:47Twitchell mixing them up. Curve ball sliders and that fastball.
- 1:25:55Now Kelleher is ready. So is Twitchell. The pitch on its way.
- 1:26:01Swing and a line drive foul down the right field line.
- 1:26:05By a youngster. Made a nice catch.
- 1:26:09Get that hand from these folks.
- 1:26:13He was playing Kelleher perfect.
- 1:26:16Went right to him. One ball, two strikes to count.
- 1:26:23Kelleher swings and drives a base hit into left center.
- 1:26:26Comardi after it bounces past him going all the way to the wall.
- 1:26:29Ontaveras around third. He will score the tying run.
- 1:26:33There goes Kelleher for three. He had no relay.
- 1:26:36And Mickey Kelleher, a substitute coming into the lineup.
- 1:26:41Triples into left center.
- 1:26:43Driving in Ontaveras with a tying run.
- 1:26:48And that's the fourth hit off Twitchell.
- 1:26:50And for Kelleher that is only his second triple.
- 1:26:59So Mickey has driven in his ninth RBI of the season.
- 1:27:04And he represents the lead run at third base.
- 1:27:10Lowry over there asking for a little time. Asking if Kelleher to whistle.
- 1:27:14That's the first time he's been around those bases in a long while.
- 1:27:19He's on third now with a lead run.
- 1:27:22And here's young Mike Gordon at bat.
- 1:27:25And the Expo infieldy end.
- 1:27:28First pitch by Twitchell.
- 1:27:30Popped up foul territory.
- 1:27:32Near the Cubs dugout.
- 1:27:34But Pappy will not have room.
- 1:27:41Toronto has taken a 40-0 lead over Baltimore.
- 1:27:49Baltimore striving to stay ahead of Boston in second place to battle those Yanks.
- 1:27:57Baltimore trails New York by two and a half games.
- 1:28:01I think they have four or five games left with Boston.
- 1:28:06Here's the pitch to Gort. Popped foul out of play.
- 1:28:10Two strikes now on Mike.
- 1:28:12With a chance to put the Cubs out in front here with Kelleher on third and one out.
- 1:28:26Twitchell taking his stretch. He's not going into his windup.
- 1:28:30Here's the two-strike pitch now to Gort.
- 1:28:33Fast ball. He wasted it outside. It's one and two.
- 1:28:38Fourth inning. Two-to-two ball game.
- 1:28:46Twitchell looks in, gets a sign from Carter.
- 1:28:49Kelleher has a walking lead from third base.
- 1:28:52Here's the pitch. Curved ball tapped down to the third baseman. Kelleher's going to try to score.
- 1:28:57He scores as Pappy goes to first base.
- 1:29:01Running by Kelleher, as I mentioned, he had a walking lead off of third base.
- 1:29:06And as soon as that ball went to the turf, Kelleher came charging in to score without a play.
- 1:29:13And the infield was playing in.
- 1:29:17So Gordon gets his first RBI, and the Cubs now have taken the lead three-to-two.
- 1:29:26Two outs, and here's Bonham at bat.
- 1:29:31First pitch to Bill. Swing and a foul out of play.
- 1:29:43Bonham forced Gordon, who was on first, in the second inning at second base.
- 1:29:52The pitch. Outside and low. One and one to come.
- 1:29:59Boston leads the Yankees one-to-nothing at the end of two-and-a-half.
- 1:30:06Here's the pitch. Outside, ball two-strike one.
- 1:30:12They're in the ninth inning at St. Louis in the first game of their twilight night doubleheader, with Pittsburgh leading four-to-one.
- 1:30:20The next pitch is fouled to the screen, and now it's two-and-two on Bonham.
- 1:30:31Nobody on base comes and scores two runs here in the fourth inning to take the lead.
- 1:30:36Three-to-two.
- 1:30:40Two-and-two pitch. Fast ball for a strike called over the outside corner. Bonham is called out on strike.
- 1:30:47But not before the Cubs, with a walk and a triple. Score two runs, one hit. Nobody left on base.
- 1:30:57So with the Montreal Expos coming to bat in the fourth inning, Cubs three, Montreal two.
- 1:31:04Things can be beautiful and beautiful furniture is to be had, and you've got the money in the bank.
- 1:31:09But even if the furniture is there when the cash isn't, there's still an easy way to furnish your home or apartment.

- 1:32:03General Finance also has an office up in McHenry.
- 1:32:08Valentine will lead off, then Carter and then Comartie as Bonham down at the one-run lead. Valentine doubled in the first inning. It was in the first inning that Montreal scored their two runs and touched Bonham for all three hits.
- 1:32:37Valentine doubled down the third base line.
- 1:32:57Bonham is ready. Here's the windup and pitch. Strike call.
- 1:33:08There's a curveball for a strike call down and Bonham is getting a sign once again.
- 1:33:15The pitch on the way. Another curveball and a swing and a foul off of the glove of Gordon.
- 1:33:23Treo jammed his right ankle going the first base on that infield hit in the second inning and consequently he had to be taken out of the line-up.
- 1:33:32Keller came in and tripled, driving in a run and then scored the lead run. Here's a swing and a high pop-up in the short center field. Keller going out calling for it. He's under it. He has it for the out.
- 1:33:49Keller making his feelings and his playing felt here against the Expos, putting a little life in that line-up for the Cubs.
- 1:34:05Backed up a throwing play by Gordon on the steal by Cash in the third inning, whereas the ball would have gone into center field and Cash would have advanced to third. Then he tripled in a run and scored another run.
- 1:34:22Here's a pitch. Fastball inside, ball one. Carter is batting. He flied out to Mercer in right field in the first inning. The wind-up and pitch by Bonham is a lead-up and it's a ball that went off the glove, although Olson made no sign whatsoever that it was a foul ball.
- 1:34:45So we'll have to wait and see what the call is. The board has it one and one.
- 1:34:56Here's a swing and a miss by Carter on a down and fastball. Gordon, young catcher, mixing them up beautifully. Lead-ups, curve balls, and the fastball. When you mix them up and the pitcher has control, which Bonham has thus far this evening, it makes that fastball much faster. There's the curve ball into the dirt.
- 1:35:19One out, nobody on base, fourth inning for the Expos with the Cubs leading 3-2.
- 1:35:27The Cubs would like to win this one and go into New York with a victory under their belt. The Cubs have lost five in a row and in doing so haven't been playing good baseball.
- 1:35:39There's a lead-up. Oh, there's one hit deep. If it's a fair ball, we're all tied up. Kiss it goodbye.
- 1:35:46Bonham lead-up was high and inside, and Carter planted it out of the ballpark.
- 1:35:56Then to the left field, that's his 26th home run of the year. His 70th RBI. 14 home runs off of Bonham.
- 1:36:15Brand new ball game, 3-3.
- 1:36:22Now here's Cromarty, grounded out to the second baseman in the second inning.
- 1:36:33Curve ball for a strike called by Cromarty.
- 1:36:41There's no doubt about Carter's home run as long as it stays fair.
- 1:36:46There's a check swing and the ball is high.
- 1:36:50One and one now to count on this fine young outfielder who has a chance of being the Rookie of the Year in the National League.
- 1:37:00There's a swing and a pop-up down the foul line at back of third base.
- 1:37:04On the first down on the warning track, reaches up one-handed and makes the catch. Fine play by Anta Veras.
- 1:37:12Now with two outs, here's Spire at bat. He was called out on strikes his first time at bat.
- 1:37:233-3 ball game. We're in the fourth inning.
- 1:37:32Spire batting eighth for Dick Williams.
- 1:37:39First pitch to him by the Bonhamers foul back to the screen. Strike one.
- 1:37:52Chris has been in several spots in this expo lineup, second, sixth, eighth. There's a curve ball he backs away from but it breaks sharply over the plate for a strike.
- 1:38:06That's an indication of how good a curve ball Bonham has tonight as it's breaking very sharply when Spire backs away from the pitch.
- 1:38:16Another curve ball, that one broke outside. Ball one, strike two. One run in on Carter's 26th home run of the year.
- 1:38:26That was his 70th run batted in. Fast ball inside, it misses.
- 1:38:34Two and to the count.
- 1:38:42Bonham is ready to wind up and kick and the pitch is inside. Three and two.
- 1:38:54Full count on Spire. Twitchell drew up next. Cubs would like to retire Spire to lead off the inning with Twitchell.
- 1:39:00Here's the pitch, curve ball, and he asks for the appeal and he swings and misses as Harvey gives the appeal to the Cubs.
- 1:39:08Spire strikes out for the fourth strikeout for Bonham. But in the fourth inning, one run on the home run by Carter, one hit, nobody left on base.
- 1:39:18At the end of four, we're all tied up and the score is Cubs three Montreal three.
- 1:39:27If your exercise program includes sit ups, try doing 14,118 of them. Sound impossible? It's not. Dale D. Cummings did it. 14,118 sit ups.
- 1:39:39From 11 p.m. November 29th to 1102 a.m. November 30th, 1965. I'm Mike Pyle and that's the way it's recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records.
- 1:39:4912 hours and three minutes worth of grunts and groans and a world record. If you think that's amazing, consider this.
- 1:39:57The world's largest Oldsmobile dealer doesn't operate out of a big city. That's right.
- 1:40:02Wild Olds, the world's largest Oldsmobile dealer, makes its home in little old Libertyville, Illinois.
- 1:40:07And smart shoppers are coming from Chicago, from all over the state, even from neighboring states to buy their new Oldsmobiles from Wild in Libertyville.
- 1:40:15Why? Why do more people buy their new Oldsmobiles in Libertyville?
- 1:40:19You won't find the answer in the Guinness Book of World Records, not yet anyway, but you will find it in Libertyville, Illinois, home of the world's largest Oldsmobile dealer.
- 1:40:29Cubs will have the top of the batting water up, Yvonne DeJesus. They come to bat here in the fifth inning in a ballgame that's now tied 3 to 3.
- 1:40:45Vince Boyd back with you. Minnesota Twins, I see, took a 2 to nothing lead in the first inning over the White Sox.
- 1:40:52Boston is leading. The New York Yankees won to nothing in the third.
- 1:40:59And Kansas City at the end of five in their first game, trailing the Oakland A's 4 to 2.
- 1:41:04Oakland had batted in the sixth inning against their rookie McElbury, who's come out of relief in the Hassler for the Royals.
- 1:41:12Yvonne walked and scored in the first inning, came in on an error, and he's fouled out, so he's 0 for 1 tonight.
- 1:41:16Twitchell's first pitch in the big rot hinder fires a strike right at the knees. Pirates look like they're going to take that first game down at St. Louis.
- 1:41:24They are carrying a 4 to 1 lead over the cards in the ninth inning.
- 1:41:28Twitchell's curve swung out of it, the string out of it beautifully, nothing in 2.
- 1:41:33And Philadelphia's Mike Schmidt has just wound up his 35th home run of the year.
- 1:41:38It came in the bottom of the fourth inning against the New York Mets with two mates aboard, so the Phillies have jumped out in front 6 to 2 at the end of 4.
- 1:41:47There's a swing and a high pop foul. Third baseman, rookie, poppy is under it. He's there and he makes the catch.
- 1:41:54So there's one away. Larry Bittner will be the batter. He has a single and a double so far tonight.
- 1:42:05Yankees failed in the bottom of the third inning, so the Red Sox still carry a 1 to nothing lead as they go to bat at Yankee Stadium in the fourth.
- 1:42:16And get this, Earl Weaver who had come out at time had been called in the Baltimore-Toronto game in the fifth inning when Weaver was out protesting a call.
- 1:42:29Big argument ensued. And get this, here's a swing and a ground ball to second baseman.
- 1:42:35Bittner is going to be retired. Davey Cash makes the pick up. That game between Toronto and Baltimore has been co-operative in favor of Toronto under Rule 4.15, which I've got to look up when I have the time if I can find the rule book.
- 1:42:53The rule book.
- 1:43:04Be with it again in a moment.
- 1:43:07Thank you, John.
- 1:43:10That's a wild one, isn't it?
- 1:43:14Game co-operative in favor of the count of leaders.
- 1:43:17We'll get that rule for you. Send to the engineer, Johnny Stubbs, has a chance to look it up for me.
- 1:43:24Well, they're two gone on the first pitch of all to Bill Buckner. There is one that's too high, ball one or ball two on him.
- 1:43:31He hit it with a double play in the first inning. After DeJesus had walked, Bittner singled him to second. Got the third on the double play.
- 1:43:40And then tallied when Morales hit a ground ball and the third baseman, Stan Pappy, threw it away for a two-base error.
- 1:43:48The Cubs earned a run in the fourth inning on a walk to one of errors with one out.
- 1:43:52A triple by Mickey Kelleher who came in on Mike Gordon's top ball to the third base side of the mound. Two-oh did every to Buckner and he takes it to strike.
- 1:44:02Inside corner at the knees, ball two, strike one on Buck. Here from Belvedere, Illinois, enjoying the ball game, Molly and Frank Cameron.
- 1:44:12Thank you, John.
- 1:44:19Takes that one and it misses inside.
- 1:44:22Apparently the rule that is applicable here tonight, much they try out of Blue Jays, won the ball game on a forfeit.
- 1:44:32Three-one delivery. Buckner swings. It's a high foul on the third base line. Long run made by the third baseman and he can't get to it. It's into the box.
- 1:44:40It fails when a team fails to obey within a reasonable time the umpire's order for removal of a player from the game. It may be forfeited.
- 1:44:57John, is it a paragraph that was in question, you know?
- 1:45:01I wouldn't say it's specific. I'm going to assume that.
- 1:45:05There's a swing by Buck and it drives down the right field foul line and it bounces foul out of play.
- 1:45:12This is WGN Radio, Chicago.
- 1:45:15We know it isn't for a day because that's concerning the start of the ball game.
- 1:45:21More tactics that you might use when weather may be of concern and you may try to stall a ball game.
- 1:45:31Or you may try to speed it up unnecessarily just to shorten it. And we know that doesn't apply in this case at all. Also.
- 1:45:40Three-two delivery. Buckner goes after it. It's a high fly ball and it should be hauled in.
- 1:45:47Dawson is over there and the center fielder makes the two-handed catch to retire the Cubs in order in the top of the fifth inning.
- 1:45:55The Montreal Expos coming to bat in the bottom of the fifth with spas a moment, however, for station identification.
- 1:46:03This is the WGN Chicago Cubs baseball network.
- 1:46:06And this is WGN Radio Chicago at three minutes past eight.
- 1:46:13Wayne Puechel is to lead off for Montreal in the bottom of the fifth that is tied three-to-three.
- 1:46:18Margaret's an antique nut and me, I like driving through Michigan in the fall. Just looking.
- 1:46:27I love all the fall colors, oranges and reds and greens and golds. I like to go kicking around in the leaves.
- 1:46:34But Margaret, she'll always spot a place back in the trees and sure enough there's an antique sign.
- 1:46:39And there'll be a cat sleeping on a pumpkin and I'll talk to the cat while Margaret buys a trivet.
- 1:46:44Michigan for trivets, she says. I say Michigan for camping and fishing and hunting and golf and tennis and color.
- 1:46:52Lord, you've never seen such colors. Michigan's for me and Margaret. Michigan's for everyone.
- 1:46:59For all there is to see and do in Michigan, no other state comes close.

- 1:47:16Or come see us in downtown Chicago. That number once again is 372-0080.
- 1:47:25To Michigan, Harris County.
- 1:47:28We're going to double check with Baltimore to be sure that we've got a specific paragraph.
- 1:47:33Why that game was forfeited when Earl Weaver came out and had a prolonged argument with the umpires.
- 1:47:43Sim play and we'll be getting the details for you and pass them along to you just as soon as we're able to get them.
- 1:47:50Wayne Clutchell stepping in to lead off against Bill Bonham.
- 1:47:54The first pitch is a ball a little bit low.
- 1:47:58Ray Burris has been decided is going to pitch the game that he started against the New York Mets.
- 1:48:06It was suspended because of the blackout. He's going to try to finish it up.
- 1:48:10Tomorrow night he'll carry a two to one lead with one out in the sixth inning.
- 1:48:15There's a strike ball one strike one down and the pitcher, Wayne Clutchell.
- 1:48:20Third ball. Today there's a ball outside.
- 1:48:28Here's what the first bulletin on that forfeits is. Two one pitch a fastball and he misses a little low.
- 1:48:35Three and one down the pitcher.
- 1:48:37Game was forfeited after manager Earl Weaver pulled his team off the field in protest over a top of them.
- 1:48:46There is a breaking ball for ball four on three and one.
- 1:48:52Bonham throws a breaking pitch and he has put Wayne Clutchell on with a walk to lead off the fifth inning.
- 1:48:59That's the first walk he's given up tonight and it has to go to the pitcher.
- 1:49:04Weaver pulled his team off the field in protest over a tarp which was being used to cover a pitcher's mound in the left field bullpen.
- 1:49:17Hmm. Well if that isn't weird.
- 1:49:22Davey Cash has single reached on an error tonight and he scored a run steps in the right hander swings drives a fastball foul down the right field line out of play.
- 1:49:37You know when it's all over with that just may cost the Baltimore Orioles a chance at a division championship.
- 1:49:49It's really something. Oh one delivery. Look out a fastball and he has to jump back out of the way.
- 1:49:54Pete Browberg is now started to warm up in the cup bullpen down the left field line.
- 1:50:04All one strike one after a walk to the pitcher Wayne Clutchell in a ballgame that's tied at three a piece. Each team with four hits and there is ball to lay inside.
- 1:50:20Running it first and nobody out. Bill gave up a homer to Carter with the bases empty in the fourth inning. 2 1 delivery. There's a swing and a double play ball. DeJesus has it flips to counter here's the relay and they got him.
- 1:50:37Cubs coming up with a double play ball and Clutchell just couldn't get in stride quickly enough to make a tough at all for McKellar to get rid of that ball after DeJesus fed him perfectly. So the bases are empty here in the fifth inning with two gone and the rookies stand pappy stepping into the batter's box here in a moment.
- 1:50:54He's single stole second in the first inning and eventually wound up scoring a run on Valentine's two base hit and he lined up to Morales in the third right handed hitter.
- 1:51:11Kelleher in its second base as Creel started the ballgame. Here's a swing and a drive down the right field foul line it is fouled and out of play. Buckner racing hard down the line back to the infield.
- 1:51:26This couldn't quite get to it in time neither could Mercer nor Kelleher Creel coming down the line on a single jammed his ankle on the bag at first base. He stayed in to finish out that inning on the bases.
- 1:51:41Then they had to take him out of the ballgame so Kelleher is in there.
- 1:51:46And Buckner and not embarrassed at the corners Kelleher and DeJesus middle right infield Mike Gordon the rookie doing the catching. Bittner gross and Mercer in the outfield and bottom starts to wind up the 0 1 delivery swung on and a deep drive to Mercer in right field but Bobby is under it has plenty of room.
- 1:52:02Reaches up and he hauls it in to retire Montreal in the fifth inning with no runs.
- 1:52:08No hits in the inning. Walk in a double play so there's nobody left on and at the end of five the winnings are played. It is still tied 3 to 3.
- 1:52:18Hello I'm Harriet Van Horn syndicated columnist. People who read my column know I'm not afraid to say what I think and right now I'd like to say what I think about life insurance.
- 1:52:30For too many years we've been spending too much money for insurance because not enough of us knew about Phoenix Mutual a 125 year old company that specializes in low cost whole life insurance.
- 1:52:44Independent figures show that at the ages most insurances purchased and mind you based on the most widely used method of cost comparison over and over Phoenix Mutual comes in lower than other companies for the very same coverage.
- 1:53:00Ask your insurance agent about Phoenix Mutual's low cost policies or check the yellow pages for your nearest Phoenix Mutual agent.
- 1:53:10Now I've been paid to make this endorsement but I wouldn't have made it unless I believed in it. Yes I believe in Phoenix Mutual.
- 1:53:20Jerry Morales is going to be leading off as the Cubs come to bat here in the top of the sixth inning tied 3 to 3.
- 1:53:41Larry Kussman will be the probable starting pitcher for the Mets tomorrow night in that suspended game and he's also scheduled to start the regular game that will immediately follow that one.
- 1:53:53Pat Zachary the probable starter against the Cubs on Saturday in New York with Nino Espinosa and Jackson Todd pitching in the double header on Sunday and it was Espinosa last night who defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 1 to nothing and a three hitter.
- 1:54:08And the little guy has singled in the only run of the ballgame.
- 1:54:15Ray Burris scheduled now to go in the suspended game tomorrow night. Rick Russell will start the regular scheduled game against Kussman and then that Herman Franks pitching coach Barney Schultz.
- 1:54:28There's a swing by Morales and a deep drive left field. Go back going back going back. It's gone over the wall. A bell ringer for Morales gives the Cubs a 4 to 3 lead.
- 1:54:39His 11th home run of the year his first one since August 26 when he got his last run batted end of the year.
- 1:54:48And he has just given the Cubs the lead 4 to 3 with a shot over the 375 foot mark.
- 1:54:57Now let's see if Mercer can regain the reign.
- 1:55:03Bobby has tapped out to the pitcher and popped up to the third baseman.
- 1:55:08Morales with his 11th bell ringer of the year.
- 1:55:12His 69th run batted end of the season.
- 1:55:23First pitch and Mercer takes and it's a ball a little bit low.
- 1:55:38Glitch will in the wind up and Mercer takes that one for ball two.
- 1:55:49Dual pitch coming up to Bobby with the Cubs now back out in front by a score of 4 to 3.
- 1:55:56Here's a pitch a swing and a deep drive at the right center field. That's not as deep as I thought it was. It's much too high.
- 1:56:02Valentine is there and he grabs it.
- 1:56:07One away in the sixth inning. That'll bring up Steve Onoveras who walked and scored on McKelligar's triple in the fourth inning.
- 1:56:25Cubs now with five hits off Quitchell who has struck out three men and walked two so far tonight.
- 1:56:30And the Cubs trying to beat him for the second time in the season.
- 1:56:34McQuitlin delivers. Too high. Ball one.
- 1:56:42Phillies batting in the bottom of the fifth inning and they lead the New York Mets 6 to 2.
- 1:56:49One-oh delivery. Takes it inside just above the knees.
- 1:56:59That's a broad ball going in from the bullpen. That a pitch against the Phillies in the bottom of the fifth inning.
- 1:57:05And they curve and he checks his swing and that's too low. Ball three on Steve Onoveras and they just might let him go after this one.
- 1:57:17Three-oh delivery. He'll take ball four. Too low.
- 1:57:21Rock number three issued by Quitchell and with one away here in the sixth inning and the Cubs leading, McKelligar in this situation, same spot on the fourth inning, drilled a triple and brought in out of errors from first base with it.
- 1:57:38Those of you who might have missed it maybe be kind enough to give us a replay.
- 1:57:49Yankees batting in the bottom of the fourth inning. Boston Red Sox with a one-to-nothing lead over New York.
- 1:57:56Quitchell's first pitch swung on. Ground ball fouled in front of Harry Dunlop coaching at first base.
- 1:58:03Earlier tonight it was reported that Alvin Dart is not going to be retained as the manager of the San Diego Padres.
- 1:58:15I want to emphasize that that was only a report. Oh one delivery. He pushes a butt and fouls it over under the carpet in the first base side out of the reach of everybody.
- 1:58:29Last time we talked to Alvin about it he said he just had a handshake out there with Buzzy Bessie and Ray Kroc.
- 1:58:36He's had some problems with some of the players. Gene Tennis who had not been playing as much as he would like to.
- 1:58:41Had indicated that he wanted to be traded away and it's kind of tough to trade a fellow like that when you've given him a multi-year contract for a bundle of dough.
- 1:58:50Got to find somebody who'll take that contract over.
- 1:58:56Oh two deliveries. Swing and a foul off the bare hand of the catcher Gary Carter.
- 1:59:08That forfeited game once he gets the victory for Toronto.
- 1:59:16Leaves him with a record of four and six and Grimsley is the loser for the ninth time this year for the Orioles. Game forfeited.
- 1:59:25Here's the pitch. Fast ball high and tight to make.
- 1:59:28Oh one strike two. He was kind of looking for that one.
- 1:59:46One and two with a run around at first base Steve Anabares.
- 1:59:49Wayne Quitchell delivers. Got to her swings and there's a high fly ball.
- 1:59:52Cromarty going back. He'll have room for this one. He is there reaches up. Hauls it in. Anabares gets back to first base.
- 1:59:59And there are two gone and Mike Gordon will be the hitter now for the Cubs.
- 2:00:03Well Reggie Jackson who was the hero in last night's New York Yankee victory.
- 2:00:08After failing twice to sacrifice running the count to three and two. Reggie ended the ballgame with a home run with the man on.
- 2:00:16He has just homered for the twenty seventh time this season came in the fourth inning with the bases empty tonight and that would tie up the ballgame one to one in the bottom of the fourth.
- 2:00:27Reggie Jackson. According to the stories here he also made two spectacular defensive plays last night.
- 2:00:34As a swing and Gordon files one back into the seats out of play.
- 2:00:39Make up that little roller in the fourth inning with Kelleher on a third base. Nick was able to score. So this rookie got his first major league run batted in.
- 2:00:50And exactly a bullet that he hit. But it had had it been. Maybe somebody would have been there to catch it.
- 2:00:56Oh one did every he takes it high ball one strike one.
- 2:01:07The Yanks and the Red Sox are tied and Baltimore had their game lost to Toronto on a forfeit of all things.
- 2:01:16But you're ready with a one one delivery. Gordon swings and misses and a sharp breaking curve down and into the rookie.
- 2:01:28Remember who the three brothers were 14 years ago today played in the outfield at the same time for a national league ball club in a regular game 14 years ago today.
- 2:01:42There's the pitch swung out and missed and Gordon fans to retire the Cubs in the sixth inning.
- 2:01:48Jerry Morales lead off Palmer gives the Cubs a lead. Walk in the inning one man left on the bases while you're thinking about the answer to that one.
- 2:01:58Give you time also to listen to this at the end of five and a half innings of play here at Montreal the Cubs lead the Montreal Expos four to three.
- 2:02:07You know any knowledgeable baseball man will tell you that a good switch hitter is a pretty valuable guy to have in the lineup.
- 2:02:13Whether the pitching is right handed or left handed you know there's one guy on your team who's equal to the occasional.
- 2:02:19Of course you could say much the same thing about old style beer.
- 2:02:23Some beers are fine for when you're hot and dry and you just want to quench a thirst.
- 2:02:28But once you've satisfied that thirst you find the flavor just isn't there.
- 2:02:33Now that's where old style goes both ways. Great when you're hot and thirsty and just as great when you simply have a taste for a beer.
- 2:02:41That's because old style is brewed the old world way in a pure brewing double brewing process called poisoning.
- 2:02:47Brew a beer once you've got a good beer. Brew a beer twice you've got a great light beer.
- 2:02:53And old style is one American premium beer that is still fully poisoned naturally carbonated in the old world way.
- 2:03:00So trial style pure brewed in God's country.
- 2:03:20Sparky Lyle has come out of pitch with the New York Yankees in the fifth inning.
- 2:03:25Reggie Jackson's home in the bottom of the fourth has tied it one to one up.
- 2:03:30While relieving Mike Torres will be key out of the hill for the Red Sox.
- 2:03:38Andre Dawson to lead off the third man and manager Dick Williams batting order here at Montreal.
- 2:03:46Right headed hitter fouled out and struck out so far tonight against Bonham.
- 2:03:51But last night he was a hero with a triple that won the ball game in the bottom of the 12th inning.
- 2:03:57Give him his 58th run batted in the 11th time this year that Dawson has driven in the winning run for the Expos.
- 2:04:04Only Gary Cotter has done it any more often than this kid.
- 2:04:09Cotters batted in the winning run a dozen times. Takes the first pitch high for a ball.
- 2:04:16Here's the windup. There's a swing and a tap foul right at the feet of the catcher.
- 2:04:22That did not score in the top of the sixth inning at Philadelphia. The Phillies still carry a 6 to 2 lead.
- 2:04:32Ball one strike one to count.
- 2:04:37Wind up by Bonham. There's a swing and another tap foul right at the feet of the catcher.
- 2:04:44At Chicago tonight the Minnesota Twins who last night shut out the White Sox 7 to nothing have a 2 nothing lead.
- 2:04:51At the end of two innings of play Jeff Zahn trying to even up for the year.
- 2:04:55One time Cub left hander going against another former Cub Steve Stone is 14 and 10 for the year.
- 2:05:04Bottoms 1-2 pitch a half swing the ball hits the batter's bat goes into the seat foul over by the dugout on the first base side.
- 2:05:12You've been thinking about who those brothers were 14 years ago today who played in the National League and the outfield at the same time.
- 2:05:20You got it huh? Figured you would. The Alou brothers yep.
- 2:05:24Let up and he looks at us right. Beautiful pitch by Bonham.
- 2:05:31That for Bill is his fifth strike out of the night.
- 2:05:35Tony Perez steps in he struck out in the first inning on a 3-2 pitch.
- 2:05:40Stan Pappy the runner at first took off Perez struck out but Mike Gordon made a throw that was into the dirt.
- 2:05:48And then Valentine brought him in with a double.
- 2:05:53First pitch by Bill a fastball swung on he fouls it way down the right field line.
- 2:05:58The Alou brothers Philippe, Matty and Jesus all played briefly in the San Francisco giant outfield the same time in a regular game 14 years ago today.
- 2:06:09September 15th of 1963.
- 2:06:15Philippe of course was a fellow who stayed around for the longest period of time.
- 2:06:19Here's a swing and a tap on a batter's charging in he picks it up throws and Tony Perez who's not exactly free to put was pegged out.
- 2:06:27They're too gone to the sixth inning and that'll bring up that was Valentine. Double in amount is seventy second run batted into the year.
- 2:06:42Toronto a winner out of forfeit.
- 2:06:45Over the Baltimore Orioles tonight Earl Weaver pulled his team off the field in protest over at Carpalam which was being used to cover a pitcher's mound in the left field bullpen.
- 2:06:56Oh wouldn't that be a weird way to lose a division championship.
- 2:07:00And it's sure possible.
- 2:07:02The Orioles you know in second place starting tonight only two and a half behind the Yankees.
- 2:07:10First pitch this right hander takes the fastball ball one.
- 2:07:15Yeah most Valentine the hitter bottom delivers and there's a strike with a fastball by the way on Saturday.
- 2:07:22September 24th a week from this coming Saturday when the Cubs are at home it's going to be a special gift for you.
- 2:07:29There's a swing and a drive over the shortstop set in the left field they said on a curve ball.
- 2:07:36Now this Valentine represents the tying run over first base with two off.
- 2:07:47Here comes Gary Carter grilled his 26th homer hold it over the left field wall in the fourth inning with the bases empty.
- 2:08:01The gift is going to be that Ernie Banks Hall of Fame montage the first 15,000 Cub fans to Brighby Field Saturday September 24th with box seats or general admission tickets
- 2:08:17or receive the Ernie Banks Hall of Fame montage as a gift Saturday September 24th bottom end of the stretch.
- 2:08:27Fastball swing on he's got a base hit down the left field line coming over to cut it off Larry Bittner and the runner will have to hold that second base as Carter grills a sharp single and credit Bittner with some good hustle to keep that ball from getting beyond him.
- 2:08:42Had it then this ballgame would be tied as it is it's still the Cubs for Montreal three at Montreal now has put runners at first and second with two gone and Warren Crowe Marty little left hander go for two.
- 2:08:57We're going to have a pinch runner.
- 2:08:59Well it's Valentine is that a sore ankle he had to leave the ballgame last night.
- 2:09:16We are in the sixth that's Lloyd reporting and we hope you're enjoying the broadcast the Cubs try to break their losing streak here against Montreal before heading into New York for five decisions with the Mets over the weekend.
- 2:09:32Johnny Stubbs our engineer Jackman of the top producer
- 2:09:42Expose now with a half dozen hits off bottom

- 2:10:21bottom is far behind to it all with the tying run at second to go ahead run at first Montreal threatening in the bottom of six with two out and the two will pitch for Marty swing ground ball to the shortstop the H's bubbles
- 2:10:33and up rose hit the force play at second to retire the side nice recovery by a bond issues.
- 2:10:40Gary Carter just an instant late getting in there to keep the ending alive.
- 2:10:47Hard hit ground ball three bond or dropped it picked it up fired quickly to cover her no guns to hit Montreal leaves two men on and at the end of six full innings of play here at Olympic Stadium.

- 2:12:11Sam I hear so came in as a pinch runner will stay in the play right field here in the seventh inning.
- 2:12:17We have another detail now on that corporate of that Baltimore Toronto game to the Blue Jays.
- 2:12:23The umpires gave Baltimore manager Earl Weaver 15 minutes to resume play.
- 2:12:28And when he did not that's when the game was forfeited. Weaver said he wanted either a top of them to protect his bullpen or he wanted them to remove the top of them that was protecting the bullpen of the Blue Jays.
- 2:12:42And that certainly doesn't seem like too much of a request.
- 2:12:48Of course we weren't on hand. We don't know all the details.
- 2:12:52Certainly they will file a protest. Lou on that forfeit that is really a stunner.
- 2:12:59Well it's dog days and you never know what managers will do nowadays when they get in a close race.
- 2:13:04But I can't understand that if he has his two pitchers warming up.
- 2:13:08There's no reason that the bullpen should not be covered for Toronto.
- 2:13:12If Toronto's warming up they have to take off the tarp to warm up.
- 2:13:16But if the bullpen is not being used I can see no reason for not protecting it.
- 2:13:22Now we don't have any details on that.
- 2:13:24Well that's what you said in the story.
- 2:13:28I didn't say anybody was warming up.
- 2:13:30Well the story we got over there was that Baltimore had two pitchers warming up.
- 2:13:35Oh I didn't have that.
- 2:13:37I thought you were reading the thing.
- 2:13:39No that's the story.
- 2:13:40Oh that explains it.
- 2:13:47And here we're in the seventh inning and Bill Bonham is going to lead off and he takes it for a pitch of ball.
- 2:13:54I can't understand we were doing that and
- 2:13:57we're not doing a ball game that's not being played with some action in between the foul line.
- 2:14:02He can lose the pennant and a position by that.
- 2:14:06And he's got his team right up there in contention.
- 2:14:09But that loss could be the difference between Baltimore winning or losing that Eastern Division.
- 2:14:161-1 to the Braves.
- 2:14:18And he takes a strike.
- 2:14:27Wayne Critchell yielded a homer to Jerry Morales leading off the sixth inning.
- 2:14:32There's a curve ball swung on at a high pop foul.
- 2:14:35Gary Carter the catcher coming to the screen.
- 2:14:37He does not have room and it's back on a player.
- 2:14:45Cubs with five hits have committed two errors tonight.
- 2:14:48The Montreal Expos three hits or three runs rather on six hits and they've been guilty of an error.
- 2:14:54They permitted the Cubs to get on the board in the first inning.
- 2:14:59Cubs with one hit in the first inning.
- 2:15:01One in the second.
- 2:15:02One in the third.
- 2:15:05One in the fourth.
- 2:15:06And the homer on the sixth inning.
- 2:15:08Now the pitch to bottom and he takes it high and tight.
- 2:15:13Foul ball came down apparently and hit some customer right in the forehead.
- 2:15:19It came back up over the screen behind the plate and he's going back for a little first aid attention.
- 2:15:252-2 delivery.
- 2:15:26Fast ball, a swing and a tap foul.
- 2:15:29Carter races out onto the carpet to retrieve it.
- 2:15:40Here are the details on the story which we had not seen earlier.
- 2:15:45Orioles trailing, you knew that, four to nothing in the last of the fifth.
- 2:15:48And we were asked to play dumb fire.
- 2:15:50Larry Barnett, a veteran, to order a topolum removed which was covering the pitcher's mound in the Toronto bullpen.
- 2:15:58Down in the left field corner.
- 2:16:00The drop was there to protect it from a steady rain.
- 2:16:02Here's a swing and a ground ball, pass the pitcher, but the shortstop Spire behind second has it, throws and he's got it.
- 2:16:08Nice play by Spire.
- 2:16:11Directly behind second base.
- 2:16:14At the time of Weaver's complaint, the Orioles had two pitchers warming up in their bullpen in right field.
- 2:16:21And Weaver felt it was unfair.
- 2:16:25At the bullpen of Toronto, their mound was covered while the ball of ours was getting soaked from the rain.
- 2:16:35And he pulled his club off the field into the dugout.
- 2:16:38Barnett gave them 15 minutes, as the rules say, to get back on the field.
- 2:16:42When they did not, he ordered the game forfeited.
- 2:16:45Well, now that clears it up for me anyway, but I don't understand why Weaver.
- 2:16:53His bullpen was being used.
- 2:16:55Yeah, if his bullpen was not being used and he didn't have a cover, then I can see.
- 2:17:00He should have asked for an umbrella over those fellows, Luke.
- 2:17:03Well, he shouldn't have warmed up his pitchers and see what would have happened.
- 2:17:10Well, sometimes those managers get a little flaky, you know.
- 2:17:13Yeah, so I said, it's dog days and manager days. You don't know what they'll do.
- 2:17:17They'll get to the tight pennant race.
- 2:17:20They'll get to the left shoe on the right foot and things like that.
- 2:17:25It was a curved hazer that swung out of this.
- 2:17:29I went to the wrong hotel room one time, 48.
- 2:17:36Hopefully it swung out and fouled.
- 2:17:39Well, I don't know what's happened to our friend Mr. Brickhouse, but we're in a new hotel here today,
- 2:17:44and I'd take a little walk today and I was coming back to the hotel.
- 2:17:48It's going to be 50 yards, no more than that away from it, quarter of a block,
- 2:17:52and I see Jack walking in the opposite direction on the other side of the street.
- 2:17:56I hollered over to him and he, miles to come on over.
- 2:18:00I walked across that narrow street. He said, where are you going?
- 2:18:03I said, I'm going to the hotel.
- 2:18:06Well, he said, no, I'm going to the hotel.
- 2:18:08I said, well, if you are, you're going to have to go around the block.
- 2:18:11He said, you mean that isn't it right over there?
- 2:18:14Well, it's got broadcasters too.
- 2:18:18He said, what are the apartment buildings?
- 2:18:19I said, Jack, that's an apartment building.
- 2:18:21If you're interested in going over there to buy one or something or rent one, go ahead.
- 2:18:25He said, that's not our hotel.
- 2:18:28Now, this is in the daytime.
- 2:18:29Had it happened after the ball game last night, after he had stopped for some refreshments,
- 2:18:34then I could understand. It was broad daylight.
- 2:18:37After that trip from St. Louis and yesterday last night's 12-inning game, anything's got to happen.
- 2:18:43That's a good old man.
- 2:18:45I took him by the hand and let him back into the hotel lobby.
- 2:18:51Gave him a little sack of jelly beans. He was happy.
- 2:18:550-2 pitch.
- 2:18:56It just takes a curve and it's low. Ball one, strike two.
- 2:19:04Come through batting here in the seventh inning with one out.
- 2:19:07The bases are ripped.
- 2:19:08And Yvonne, who walked and scored on the error in the first inning,
- 2:19:110-2 tonight, fouled out twice to the catcher.
- 2:19:14Relay the rivals. They got to see a repeat.
- 2:19:171-2 delivery.
- 2:19:18There's a swing and a miss and a curve.
- 2:19:20That broke sharply away. Kind of signed our team with that one.
- 2:19:25Let's pause a moment for station identification.
- 2:19:28This is the WGN, Chicago Cubs baseball network.
- 2:19:32And this is WGN Radio Chicago 835.
- 2:19:41Larry tonight has a single and a double and a ground out.
- 2:19:45He had two hits last night, including his tenth home of the year.
- 2:19:49So he has four for nine up here at Fontial.
- 2:19:52This guy has eight hits now in his last 15 trips to the plate, eight for 15.
- 2:19:59Now batting 297 for the year.
- 2:20:01The first pitch from Tretchell was a ball too low.
- 2:20:03Well, the Pirates won that first game at St. Louis tonight,
- 2:20:07despite a cardinal rally in the bottom of the night that fell one run short.
- 2:20:11Pirates are winner 4-3 in the first one.
- 2:20:151-0 delivery.
- 2:20:17Takes it low.
- 2:20:18John Candeleria held on to get his 16th win, gets five losses.
- 2:20:23Eric Rasmussen tagged with his 15th defeat of the season after 10 wins.
- 2:20:29And story, Candeleria now 17-5, gets the win, 4-3 in the opener.
- 2:20:37That's a score here, 4-3 favor the Cubs.
- 2:20:40Bittner takes Wichita's next pitch low, ball three.
- 2:20:46At the end of five, Boston and the New York Yankees remain tied 1-1.
- 2:20:52And Texas has just hit California with four runs to take a 4-1 lead at their ball game tonight.
- 2:20:58And Hargrove, a homer, is 16th of the year for the Rangers in the second inning.
- 2:21:05So that's increased their lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the second.
- 2:21:10There's ball for Bittner.
- 2:21:11So Larry draws a walk.
- 2:21:17The Bavarians, first base, second half.
- 2:21:20Wins lead to the Sox, 4-0 at the end of two and a half innings in Chicago.
- 2:21:26And at the Oakland A's, five, Kansas City three, at the end of six innings of play in their first game tonight.
- 2:21:36Bittner with a walk, keeps the inning alive, and here comes Bill Buckner.
- 2:21:41We're going to have a pinch runner now.
- 2:21:44Jose Cardenal is going to run for Bittner at first base.
- 2:21:51Jose, who is way down in the bullpen, down the left field line, is going to take plenty of time.
- 2:21:58The little fella finally reaches the carpet on the first base side of the infield.
- 2:22:08We are in the seventh with the Cubs leading 4-3.
- 2:22:16Jose Cardenal running at first base.
- 2:22:21Expos about hit the Cubs tonight, 6-5.
- 2:22:25But the Cubs have the lead.
- 2:22:26Each team with one home run so far tonight.
- 2:22:30Buckner looking for his first hit of the night, twitchle into the stretch of the livers.
- 2:22:33There's a swing and a deep drive down the right field line.
- 2:22:36And it is a foul ball.
- 2:22:39Up into the yellow seats, down the right field line.
- 2:22:42He was out in front of it just a little bit too much.
- 2:22:51Joe Jose trotting back to first base.
- 2:22:53And Buckner getting back into the batter's box.
- 2:22:58Marmite Ray Burris is going to be the starting pitcher in the suspended game against Jerry Kussman of the New York Mets.
- 2:23:06And we'll have the regularly scheduled game.
- 2:23:10And meet the Mets again Saturday in a single one and a double hitter on Sunday.
- 2:23:14Here's the pitch.
- 2:23:15Takes the pass ball.
- 2:23:16It's just outside.
- 2:23:21Ball one, strike one on the Cubs' first baseman, Bill Buckner.
- 2:23:25Our broadcast tonight will be getting underway both on WGN and on our network at 6 o'clock.
- 2:23:33Here's the pitch.
- 2:23:34Kerr blowing inside.
- 2:23:37Ball two, strike one.
- 2:23:39Hugh Gawm, runner at first base.
- 2:23:44Big, gangly Wayne Twichell.
- 2:23:48Trying to get out of the seventh inning, he retired the first two Cubs, his mound opponent, bottom.
- 2:23:53And to Jesus.
- 2:23:54Struck the Jesus out with a good sidearm curveball.
- 2:23:58Then walked Bittner and Cardinal running for him.
- 2:24:00And a count of ball two, strike one on Bill Buckner.
- 2:24:05Twichell taking an awful lot of time.
- 2:24:10He looks again down to Gary Carter.
- 2:24:13Act as though he's never seen that side before.
- 2:24:16Now the big fellow's ready.
- 2:24:17Hands at the belt, kicks delivers.
- 2:24:19Buckner takes it too low.
- 2:24:21All of that to throw a ball.
- 2:24:28Houston tried to move into second place in the National League Western Division.
- 2:24:33The San Francisco Giants this afternoon at Candlestick Park, 6 to 3.
- 2:24:40And the Reds playing the Dodgers tonight in the West Coast.
- 2:24:44Two out, 3-1 pitch.
- 2:24:45Buckner swings, pulls the ground ball.
- 2:24:47Perez backhands it, comes back to first base.
- 2:24:49Unassisted put-out, retires the side.
- 2:24:52Hard hit.
- 2:24:54But he couldn't get it by.
- 2:24:55The veteran first baseman Perez.
- 2:24:56No runs, no hits.
- 2:24:58One man left.
- 2:25:00Now this ballgame moves to the bottom of the seventh with the Montreal Expo fans standing for the stretch.
- 2:25:05Cubs 4 and the Expos 3.

- 2:26:04Also an office in Mundelein.
- 2:26:07Music
- 2:26:15Well, they're looking for a pinch hitter here.
- 2:26:17Of course, fire is to lead off.
- 2:26:20And a pitcher due up next.
- 2:26:22Adele Unser has already stepped out in front of the dugout into the on deck circle.
- 2:26:26Back for the pitcher.
- 2:26:28Spire has spanned twice tonight against Bottom, who has registered five strikeouts.
- 2:26:35He gave up three hits in the first inning.
- 2:26:39And a home run in the fourth with the bases empty.
- 2:26:42With two out in the sixth, he gave up two singles.
- 2:26:45Delivers to Spire and the right-hander takes it inside, ball one.
- 2:26:49And he got out of the inning when Comarty hit a hard ground ball to the shortstop.
- 2:26:55Yvonne DeJesus, who forced him at second base, forced Potter at second base.
- 2:27:02There's a ball a little low.
- 2:27:05Bottom beginning to show signs of trouble out there.
- 2:27:10He is behind on Spire 2-0.
- 2:27:16Binder winds, here's a pitch swung on a high bouncing foul on the third base side.
- 2:27:21Jose Cardinal, who came in to run for Bittner, is staying in to play left field.
- 2:27:25Gubs with Morales in center.
- 2:27:27He has a homer tonight.
- 2:27:30And in right field is Bobby Mercer, and he is playing his old teammate Spire to swing late, guarding the line and right against him.
- 2:27:36Here's the pitch.
- 2:27:37He's out of serve and it's outside. Ball, three, strike one.
- 2:27:47Bell with only one complete game this year, and that was his first start of the season.
- 2:27:51There's a fastball swung on. He pulls a foul on the third base line.
- 2:27:55Ball, three, strike two.
- 2:28:04Cap in that forfeited game. Toronto four runs, five hits.
- 2:28:07Baltimore, no runs, two hits.
- 2:28:14Somebody tuning in like, what forfeited game? What do you mean that forfeited the game?
- 2:28:17Well, forfeit Major League Games when you're in a pennant race.
- 2:28:21Well, they did.
- 2:28:22Here's the swing and a bouncing ball. The haste is coming in to his right. He's got it.
- 2:28:25Here's the peg, into the dirt, gets off the club of Buckner, and Spire is going to reach.
- 2:28:32Yvonne circling in until his right, threw that ball into the dirt, and he is charged with a throwing error,
- 2:28:40permitting Spire to reach.
- 2:28:45That's the tying run at first base, and Dale Unser, who had been in the batter's box or in the on-deck circles,
- 2:28:52now, pulled back and Twitchell will be sent up there in a sacrifice situation.
- 2:29:03Under the forfeit rule, all the players' records stand in that ball game tonight between Baltimore and Toronto.
- 2:29:15It's the third cup error of the night, by the way. Here's the pitch. Twitchell pulls the bat back from a ball inside.
- 2:29:24He walked leading off the fifth inning and then was rubbed out on the double play ball.
- 2:29:29Now, rookie Mike Gordon, first baseman, Buckner out there to talk to Buck at the bottom.
- 2:29:36We don't need any mistakes tonight.
- 2:29:39He just committed one last night that was very costly, proved to be the tying run in the ball game, and eventually sent it into overtime,
- 2:29:46and Montreal pulled it out in 12 innings.
- 2:29:49Buckner charges up the line, and this time, Twitchell swings at the pitch and he misses.
- 2:29:54Oh, one strike one.
- 2:29:57The Pirates, the winner at St. Louis, in their first game tonight, 4-3. Candleria over Erie Craspenson.
- 2:30:10Wayne Twitchell, count of one-on-one on him. He's going to bunt, and he pulls the bat back and bottom, misses outside.
- 2:30:18Ball two, strike one on him.
- 2:30:21Buckner coming over to talk to him.
- 2:30:25Reggie Jackson's 27th homer of the year in the fourth inning tonight tied up the Boston Yankee game at the end of five, one-to-one.
- 2:30:36Texas leading California, five-to-one at Texas in the bottom of the third.
- 2:30:41Throw to first to keep the runner close.
- 2:30:44And Oakland leading Kansas City. Here's the pitch.
- 2:30:48Twitchell pushes him up on the air, bottom, barehand pick up, world's throws to DeJesus,
- 2:30:53has to return to second to step on the bag, and there's no chance to get Twitchell.
- 2:30:58There's a weird one as Spire apparently thought that ball was going to be caught in the air, and he was heading back to first base.
- 2:31:05I thought, Lou, we had a good shot at a double play there.
- 2:31:07Yes, it could have been a double play. He had bottom thrown perfectly to DeJesus, but it pulled him off the bag.
- 2:31:13I was glad to see DeJesus be sure of that lead man. He went back and touched second base.
- 2:31:21Dote the fielder's choice for Wayne Twitchell.
- 2:31:25And there's one out with Davy Cash, the hitter.
- 2:31:28He's reached in an air, a single, and he's hit into a double play tonight.
- 2:31:37Right-handed hitter and a tough one.
- 2:31:44Bottom over the top of the curve, and it caught the outside corner for a strike.
- 2:31:50And it's Oakland 5, Kansas City 3, in their first game.
- 2:31:54It's in the bottom of the seventh inning at KC, and Vita Blue has gone the distance so far.
- 2:32:02Bottom-six curve, low, all-one strike point.
- 2:32:12Dennis Lamp standing out at the Cub Bowl pen is ready if needed.
- 2:32:16Bottom has been the tough customer here so far tonight. We're in the bottom of the seventh.
- 2:32:211-1 delivery. Swung out, a drive. Mercer going back into his right. Bobby is there, reaches up, he hauls it in.
- 2:32:28And Twitchell drives on back to first base. They're two gone.
- 2:32:32The high deep drive to right off the bat of Davy Cash. That brings up the rookie, Stan Pappy.
- 2:32:38Single, got credit for his stolen base in the first inning and scored a run.
- 2:32:43Came in eventually, and Ellis Valentine's double.
- 2:32:48And he lined out to Morales, who plays him to swing late, Jerry over in the right center field for him.
- 2:32:55That was in the third inning, and then in the fifth inning, he flied out to Mercer, who guards the right field line against him.
- 2:33:02Cardinal moving several more steps off the left field line.
- 2:33:07First pitch to him, and he takes the curve that's outside of the knees, ball one.
- 2:33:11Two gone.
- 2:33:16Mike Gordon, the kept catcher tonight, has to know Stan Pappy pretty well.
- 2:33:21Both were in the minors this year. There's the swing and a liner, caught by Steve Montemarie.
- 2:33:25Some beautiful catch. He has just robbed this rookie of an extra base hit.
- 2:33:32Absolutely fantastic reactions by Steve Montemarie on a bullet off the bat of Stan Pappy.
- 2:33:39And the Montreal Expos are shut out in the seventh inning.
- 2:33:44No runs, no hits. One error, more than made up for by that great, great catch by Steve Montemarie's one man left on.
- 2:33:53And at the end of seven, the Cubs are still leading four to three.
- 2:33:57Okay, fans, don't forget it. Fiat prices start at just $29.98 and deliver 35 miles per gallon, highway, 23-city EPA-rated mileage.
- 2:34:07May vary, but let me tell you...
- 2:34:09Ah, come on, Alou, hold on. That's the place where Fireside Chrysler Plymouth Mazda commercials.
- 2:34:13Well, so it is, Vince. Fireside Chrysler Plymouth Mazda now sells the entire Fiat line, too.
- 2:34:18By golly, sounds like Fireside's trying to please today's economy-conscious young people.
- 2:34:22You're so right, Vince. The young folks are looking for cars that are easy to buy, easy to own, real mileage machines.
- 2:34:28And let me tell you...
- 2:34:29And that's where the Fiat's come in.
- 2:34:30Come in and see them, friends. 128 sedans and wagons, little sports fighters, X-19 sport cars.
- 2:34:37They've got them all at Fireside Chrysler Plymouth on Gulf Road, just west of the Woodfield Shopping Center in Chambord.
- 2:34:44All right, Alou, say it.
- 2:34:46Say what?
- 2:34:47Fireside's full name. Without thinking a breath. Fireside Chrysler Plymouth Mazda Fiat Lancia.
- 2:34:53Hooray!
- 2:34:54I did it?
- 2:34:55You did it.
- 2:34:56Oh, how about that?
- 2:35:08Wayne Quetzal's still in the ballgame. He gave up a home run to the leadoff man for the Cubs in the sixth inning.
- 2:35:14Let's see if history can repeat because that leadoff man here in the eighth is Jerry Morales.
- 2:35:20He got his 11th home run of the year on his last one on August the 26th out of San Francisco, came off Jim Barr,
- 2:35:31and accounted for his last run batted in until here tonight.
- 2:35:37Quetzal finishes his warm-up classes.
- 2:35:41Brought us to be followed by Bobby Mercer and Steve Hanovera.
- 2:35:57Time for those magic numbers to be talked about now.
- 2:36:03And it's getting powerlessly near the end.
- 2:36:06The 1977 season for the Cubs to win a championship, their magic numbers starting tonight against the Philadelphia Phillies is four.
- 2:36:14Any combination of four cup defeats or Philadelphia victories in the Phillies will have eliminated the Cubs mathematically.
- 2:36:23First pitch and Jerry takes the ball into close.
- 2:36:28Against the Pirates, magic number 10, combination of 10 pirate losses, Philadelphia defeat, or victories rather,
- 2:36:38would eliminate Pittsburgh, their nearest competitor.
- 2:36:42Cardinals' number is the same as the Cubs starting tonight, but it is now down to three for St. Louis.
- 2:36:49There's the ball, ball two, no strikes. Bobby Mercer the hitter.
- 2:36:562-0 pitch.
- 2:36:59Twichell gets a strike call right at the knees on the outside corner, ball two, strike one.
- 2:37:05For the White Sox, the magic number going into tonight's action is 10.
- 2:37:13There's a swing and a tap on the first base side of the mound picked up by Twichell.
- 2:37:17Big lot of tosses over to first base.
- 2:37:19He looks so uncoordinated, hard to believe that he was a very fine basketball player and a pitcher in the major leagues, but he gets the job done.
- 2:37:29You'd think sometimes he's going to trip over his own feet out there.
- 2:37:34Bobby Mercer 0-3 tonight.
- 2:37:371-7 in the series stepping into the batter's box.
- 2:37:45Twichell winds the right-hander's pitch, strike call.
- 2:37:49Took a little bit off of that one.
- 2:37:55Baltimore has no more games remaining to play with the Yankees this year.
- 2:37:59There's a bunt the temp by Bobby and he fouls that one back to the screen.
- 2:38:04Somebody getting on it from the dugout and he said, well, what am I going to do?
- 2:38:06He said, I'm going to get a hit.
- 2:38:08Might as well try to reach for the bunt single.
- 2:38:10Nothing or two to count on him.
- 2:38:16Red Sox have three left with Baltimore.
- 2:38:20The Yankees and Boston have two left to play at Fenway Park this year.
- 2:38:25Playing their last one against one another at Yankee Stadium tonight and it's tied in the sixth inning 1-1.
- 2:38:35Baltimore has no more cracks at the Yankees.
- 2:38:38They have to play Boston six times, three at home and three at Fenway Park.
- 2:38:45Twichell delivers that one outside.
- 2:38:47He wasted it.
- 2:38:48Ball one, strike two on Mercer with one out.
- 2:38:50The bases are ripping.
- 2:38:51The Cubs here in the eighth lead 4-3.
- 2:38:54Twichell winds the big fellow's next pitch swung on.
- 2:38:56Drive down the right field line, coming in forward to Santa Hears,
- 2:39:00and he makes the catch in fair territory just out the area of the Montreal bullpen.
- 2:39:06Little fella's got fast feet.
- 2:39:11Mercer retired and a rather nice play.
- 2:39:16That'll bring up Steve on the various whose walk twice tonight and scored a run.
- 2:39:20Especially Steve is 0-1.
- 2:39:27Royals going into tonight's action have 11 games left to play at home and eight on the road.
- 2:39:33They're getting two of those 11 underway tonight, and they're losing the first one to the Oakland A's.
- 2:39:39So after tonight, Kansas City will have nine at home and eight on the road.
- 2:39:48There's a curve and a swing and a miss.
- 2:39:51Nothing at two.
- 2:39:52I'm sure your foul ball won't be bad.
- 2:39:59Stocks playing tonight, have 10 more to play at home this year and six on the road,
- 2:40:04two of them up at Minnesota.
- 2:40:06But they have none to play with Kansas City.
- 2:40:09There's a swing and a miss, as Steve went after a pitch down around his knees on the inside corner.
- 2:40:15But Twichell has just brung up his sixth strike out of the night.
- 2:40:22And the Cubs in the top of the eighth inning go down 1-2-3.
- 2:40:25Montreal coming to bat against Bill Bonham, who's sprinting out to the mound.
- 2:40:29Cubs leading 4-3.
- 2:40:32This is Carl Malden.
- 2:40:33Think about this.
- 2:40:34You save all year to take your family on vacation,
- 2:40:37but unless you're carrying American Express Travelers Checks, everybody could lose their vacation.
- 2:40:42Now, other Travelers Checks may look the same, but at their loss to stolen, they all don't work the same.
- 2:40:47Remember, American Express Travelers Checks can give you an emergency refund 24 hours a day,
- 2:40:53seven days a week, all across America.
- 2:40:56Try getting that with cash or just about any other Travelers Check.
- 2:40:59Insist on American Express Travelers Checks.
- 2:41:02Don't leave home without them.
- 2:41:04Terrific movie.
- 2:41:05Oh, wow.
- 2:41:06Let's all go get a sundae.
- 2:41:07Oh, great.
- 2:41:08We could go to McDonald's.
- 2:41:10McDonald's?
- 2:41:11McDonald's.
- 2:41:12You're the one.
- 2:41:14Come try our brand new sundae.
- 2:41:16Do they have hot caramel sundaes?
- 2:41:18Hot caramel, hot fudge.
- 2:41:19They got pineapple.
- 2:41:20You got me.
- 2:41:21Pineapple.
- 2:41:22They got strawberry.
- 2:41:23They got strawberry.
- 2:41:24What are we waiting for?
- 2:41:25At the bus.
- 2:41:26At McDonald's.
- 2:41:27Come on.
- 2:41:28Taxi.
- 2:41:29Taxi.
- 2:41:30We do it all for you.
- 2:41:31McDonald's sundae.
- 2:41:32We do it all for you.
- 2:41:39Andre Dawson, Tony Perez, Sam Bahias, 3, 4, and 5 then, in thick, wet, and batting order,
- 2:41:48are scheduled to face Bill Bonham here in the bottom of the eighth inning as he is looking
- 2:41:54for his first victory since the 6th of August.
- 2:41:56And here it is, the 14th of September.
- 2:41:59That's when he beats San Diego.
- 2:42:02August the 6th.
- 2:42:03He got his 10th win of the year.
- 2:42:06It's a good ball against the Mets in his last outing Saturday at Wrigley Field.
- 2:42:10Here's the swing and a high-fly ball.
- 2:42:13Morales started back.
- 2:42:14Now he's running in hard.
- 2:42:15And he finally catches up with that ball and makes a belt buckle catch.
- 2:42:21Did not get a good jump on the ball, but he used those little legs of his to come in just
- 2:42:25as hard as he possibly could to make the catch.
- 2:42:27And Dawson is out of there.
- 2:42:28That'll bring up Tony Perez, who is 0 for 3 tonight.
- 2:42:37In the very first start this season for Bill at Philadelphia, he went all the way and got
- 2:42:43the victory.
- 2:42:44Now this is his 31st start of the year.
- 2:42:47There's a swing and a bouncing foul past Aussie Virgil, the third-base coach.
- 2:42:52And Bill is still looking for another complete gain.
- 2:42:55Maybe, maybe he'll get it tonight.
- 2:43:03He has not exactly been given a big cushion.
- 2:43:06Score of 4 to 3.
- 2:43:08He's allowed 6 hits.
- 2:43:09The Cubs have a total of 5.
- 2:43:11They've fastball taken first strike over the outside corner, nothing in 2.
- 2:43:19When he left against the Mets on Saturday, he had a 2-1 lead.
- 2:43:22When the ball game was over, the Mets won it 7-2.
- 2:43:26Kerrball outside, ball one, strike two.
- 2:43:29Galloway into Jesus.
- 2:43:32Shading towards the outside corner of the infield.
- 2:43:34Here's a swing and a ground ball, back of third.
- 2:43:37Ferris has it, throws, and he is safe at first base.
- 2:43:41The Flyers rule out a fair ball.
- 2:43:48Let me tell you, that had to be just fair by inches, very, very deep at third base.
- 2:43:57Effie Frias is going to run for Perez at first base.
- 2:44:04He's a fellow with any speed at all that would not have even been close at first base.
- 2:44:08It was very, very deep at third and had to be hugging the chalk line.
- 2:44:14It's an infield hit, and he represents a tying run at first base.
- 2:44:18Effie Frias.
- 2:44:21Dale Unser is now going to bat for Sam Mejias, who had come in to run for Valentine.
- 2:44:26The night ending Valentine nursing a sore ankle,
- 2:44:29and Unser, left-hander, now pinch-hitting with one out.
- 2:44:32Dale takes in the first pitch, to him is a ball, too low.
- 2:44:35June 4th of 74, the Indians forfeit.
- 2:44:38This is WGN Radio, Chicago.
- 2:44:41Oh, I remember this one, yeah, I remember Lou when they had that promotion, now yes.
- 2:44:45And the fans over there just became absolutely unruly and out of complete control,
- 2:44:51and Cleveland had to forfeit the ballgame.
- 2:44:53Oh, they drive it to left field, Jose is there, Cardinal comes in a couple of steps.
- 2:44:58Makes the one-headed catch, Unser is retired, two-gone.
- 2:45:00Runner at first base, four to three scorecubs.
- 2:45:04Gary Carter stepping in.
- 2:45:10This is a pretty much different situation.
- 2:45:17The manager, Earl Weaver in this case, of Baltimore tonight, got so upset.
- 2:45:23He had his pitchers warming up in the bullpen.
- 2:45:26There was nobody warming up in the Baltimore bullpen, and there was a copeland covering their bullpen,
- 2:45:31and he wanted that removed because it was raining like this.
- 2:45:35And it wouldn't do it, he argued and argued, and finally the umpires, that's it.
- 2:45:40Larry Barnett, crew chief there and a good veteran umpires.
- 2:45:44And I'm sure that he had warned him several times that if you don't cease and desist,
- 2:45:48you're going to lose this on a forfeit, and that's what happened.
- 2:45:52Orioles had won seven in a row and ten out of their last eleven.
- 2:45:57Tonight it's a forfeit.
- 2:46:00It moved into second place last night.
- 2:46:04Now a 1-0 delivery.
- 2:46:07He takes a strike right at the knees.
- 2:46:09We've got a pause a moment for station identification.
- 2:46:11This is the WGN Chicago Cubs baseball network.
- 2:46:14This is WGN Radio Chicago.
- 2:46:22Kyler, a home run, a single tonight in three trips to the plate.
- 2:46:26Right-hander, after walloping that home run in the fourth, his 26th of the year,
- 2:46:31stood plants fixed in the batter's box.
- 2:46:34First base side of it, watching it disappear out of sight.
- 2:46:37There's a curve to him and he takes it low.
- 2:46:40Ball two, strike one.
- 2:46:44He might have thought for just a moment that he had pulled it too much.
- 2:46:47Maybe it might go foul.
- 2:46:49From here it looked like he was just standing in sheer admiration.
- 2:46:54Two out, a runner at first.
- 2:46:55Four to three score Cubs.
- 2:46:57And a count of ball two, strike one on Cotter, a right-hander.
- 2:47:01Bottom in the stretch, steps up the pitching rubber to check that runner again.
- 2:47:05Vince Lloyd and Lou Boudreau, Jack Minovich, our producer,
- 2:47:08and Johnny Stubbs, our engineer.
- 2:47:10Last game of the year between these two teams.
- 2:47:12There's a swing and a drive at the right center field.
- 2:47:14That's trouble.
- 2:47:15There goes the run around, second on his way to third.
- 2:47:17Ball bounces off the wall.
- 2:47:18Here comes that tying run around third.
- 2:47:20Here is the throw.
- 2:47:22And it finally winds up in the hands of DeJesus.
- 2:47:25The ball game is tied.
- 2:47:28Cotter with a double in the right center field.
- 2:47:33Seemed to be a little like that throw came in over the cutoff.
- 2:47:37Missed the cutoff vanitally, but I don't think we would have been able to throw
- 2:47:41the pinch runner out pre-hots.
- 2:47:43He was running around third when I noticed the ball was thrown over Kelliher's head.
- 2:47:50That Carter has been murder against Cotter.
- 2:47:53He sure has.
- 2:47:56The only time he got it tonight was in the first inning when he flied out to Mercer,
- 2:48:00who right now is standing way back against the wall,
- 2:48:03shoulders against it, thinking, what in the world do we have to do to win a ball game?
- 2:48:10Now Morales is going over to talk to Cardinal.
- 2:48:16Well, Herman Franks is going out to make a couple of changes in the batting order.
- 2:48:21And one of them, of course, is going to be the pitcher.
- 2:48:24In addition to bringing in Bruce Sutter, Herman has brought in Greg Gross to play right field,
- 2:48:36replacing Bobby Mercer.
- 2:48:39So Sutter will hit in Mercer's spot, the number five spot of the batting order.
- 2:48:46And Gross will hit in the number nine spot,
- 2:48:49and he is going to be the third man up in the top of the ninth inning.
- 2:48:54Now with the man at second base.
- 2:48:57The left-handed hitter, Warren Cromarty, in there.
- 2:49:03Sutter to second base on an appeal.
- 2:49:07Maybe that runner had missed on his way from first to third.
- 2:49:11I didn't think he had. That's where I saw him.
- 2:49:14Here's where DeJesus has taken the appeal.
- 2:49:17The umpire's not going to give it to Kelliher.
- 2:49:19Kelliher was out in right center, so he can tell Kelliher, you didn't see the play.
- 2:49:25He was out in right field for the relay.
- 2:49:28Here's the pitch to Cromarty, and he swings and misses on a good forkball.
- 2:49:33I was positive I saw him step on second, but I wasn't too sure about third.
- 2:49:41But he was flying all the way.
- 2:49:43Game is tied at four feet.
- 2:49:47Cromarty checks his swing, takes the ball, low it inside, ball one, strike one on him.
- 2:50:00Sutter's stretch. Here's a swing and a miss.
- 2:50:03Same spot, low and inside, swung on a miss for strike two.
- 2:50:07Bottom of the ninth cannot pick up a victory.
- 2:50:12He could only be charged with a loss.
- 2:50:15And he left the weight a while longer before posting his 11th win of the year.
- 2:50:19Sutter's pitch, very slow and inside.
- 2:50:22Cromarty won't go after it. It's two and two with two off.
- 2:50:24Runner at second base, score tied, four to four, bottom of the eighth inning at Olympic Stadium in Montreal.
- 2:50:32And an infield single by Perez. Here's a swing and a check swing.
- 2:50:37The pitch and a check swing, rather.
- 2:50:40And Cromarty, they say, held up in time for three strike two.
- 2:50:45Infield single by Perez on a ball that was barely, barely foul deep at third.
- 2:50:52And then with two out, Carter got his third straight hit, a double, driving in the tying run.
- 2:50:58Two out, three-two pitch. Cromarty swings, pulls the ground ball.
- 2:51:02Kelleher is there, picks it up, passes to Buckner.
- 2:51:05In time for the out, he was shading him way over to the right side of the infield by Kevin.
- 2:51:09And Sutter retires the side, but they tie the game with a run, two hits, one man left on.
- 2:51:15And at the end of eighth, Cubs coming to bat. Montreal four, the Cubs four.
- 2:51:22Have you ever heard a pinging sound when you've accelerated on expressways or carried a heavy load?
- 2:51:28That's called knocking, and it's caused by uneven combustion.
- 2:51:32When you hear a noise like this, it's a sign your car may need higher octane to run the way it should.
- 2:51:38Now Standard introduces new Amaco Premium Lead Free, the higher octane lead free gasoline
- 2:51:45with higher octane than typical unleaded gasoline.
- 2:51:49Higher octane than regular leaded gasolines, too.
- 2:51:52Try a tank full. It could make a difference.
- 2:51:55If you don't have the problem of engine knock, use Lead Free Amaco, the Midwest's best-selling lead free.
- 2:52:01Since the lead free age began, Standard has been the lead free leader.
- 2:52:06And now Standard offers you two lead free gasolines, new Amaco Premium Lead Free in the gold pump
- 2:52:13and famous Lead Free Amaco in the blue pump.
- 2:52:16You'll find this choice of lead free gasolines at your independent Standard oil dealer
- 2:52:21because you expect more from a leader.
- 2:52:24We have a new first baseman, Dale Launcher.
- 2:52:33We have a new shortstop, Pepe Frias, and a new right fielder, the third one of the night, Jerry White.
- 2:52:40Nick Callagher to lead off.
- 2:52:45He's to be followed by the rookie catcher, Mike Gordon, then Greg Gross.
- 2:52:50He's over the pitch, and he takes it high.
- 2:52:55And if he could happen to pull one down that left fielder line, he could run all night
- 2:52:59because Cromarty is almost in a line with first and second base.
- 2:53:03That's how far off the left fielder line Cromarty is.
- 2:53:06There's a ball a little bit low, two and 0 on it.
- 2:53:09There's the strike ball right at the knees, ball to strike one.
- 2:53:15They're not exactly pleased with Olson's call on that one.
- 2:53:20The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox, ooh, blant.
- 2:53:24Boston hit them with six in the sixth.
- 2:53:26No homers reported.
- 2:53:28There's a swing and a foul back out of play.
- 2:53:31So it does not appear as though the Yankees will ever lose sweep that series.
- 2:53:36Red Sox with a 7-1 lead at the end of six innings of play.
- 2:53:41The New York Yankees had their game forfeited through Toronto tonight.
- 2:53:472-2 pitch, takes the ball, low it outside, it's 3-2.
- 2:53:55Boston hold on to win that one.
- 2:53:58And if they don't, Don Zimmer may blow up Yankee Stadium.
- 2:54:03There's a pitch that misses low, ball a four.
- 2:54:06So McCutcher opens up the ninth inning by drawing a walk, a fledge hook.
- 2:54:10That'll bring up rookie catcher Mike Gordon, which will stretch the pitch.
- 2:54:13He's going to bunt, pops it up in the air.
- 2:54:15Grabbed by the catcher, Carter, whirled, but he has no play at first base.
- 2:54:19Cutter, very, very careful.
- 2:54:24And Mike Gordon, unable to sacrifice, pops one up about seven or eight feet away from the plate
- 2:54:30on the third-base side, grabbed in foul territory by Gary Carter.
- 2:54:40Nick Williams is called time, going after them out, as Puchel seems to be having a lot of trouble
- 2:54:45keeping the mud out of his spikes suddenly.
- 2:54:47Will McAdony is going to come in.
- 2:54:50It's an awfully good success, particularly against a couple left-handers in relief this year.
- 2:54:55And Puchel is leaving in the ninth inning with the ballgame tied 4-4.
- 2:55:02And he's getting a good round of applause from this crowd.
- 2:55:05It's tonight's number, 7,369 pace.
- 2:55:11They're really giving us a big guy.
- 2:55:21Well, Gene Klienz is now going to be brought in to pinch it for Greg Grouse against the left-hander,
- 2:55:26Will McAdony.
- 2:55:27He and everybody else was veered in relief last night for Montreal.
- 2:55:34Hound the Cubs like they were little babes.
- 2:55:40Klienz hitting 2-99 for the year.
- 2:55:43Three homers, 37 runs about it in.
- 2:55:45The last game the Cubs won came on his pinch-hit homer.
- 2:55:49And that was last Friday at Wrigley Field, shot in the ninth inning.
- 2:55:53Since then the Cubs have wound up on the loss side five consecutive times.
- 2:55:59When they were up here in Montreal in the latter part of June,
- 2:56:03they had themselves a seven-game winning streak,
- 2:56:06the sixth and seventh wins coming at the expense of this ball club.
- 2:56:10And then Montreal threw a shutout at the Cubs to end that seven-game winning streak,
- 2:56:15which is the Cubs' longest of the year.
- 2:56:19And now the five-game losing streak is the longest endured by the Cubs so far,
- 2:56:23and they're trying to end it here at Montreal tonight.
- 2:56:26Klienz steps in and Gene takes McAdony's first pitch inside for a ball.
- 2:56:34Montreal, for the last couple of months, has been playing good ball.
- 2:56:38Not outstanding, but certainly a whole lot better than they did the first couple of months of the season.
- 2:56:44There's a swing and a bouncing ball to the third baseman.
- 2:56:46Pappy has it. The rookies pegged the first in time.
- 2:56:49DeDeleon, sir. Pugon, a runner at second base.
- 2:56:53And now it's up to Yvonne DeJesus to break the tie.
- 2:57:00Klienz bouncing up the third.
- 2:57:02Kavahar at second base.
- 2:57:09Yvonne walked and scored in the first inning off Tweedle.
- 2:57:12After that, he fouled out twice and struck out.
- 2:57:18Kerrig in a big right-hander, throwing in to Montreal both in.
- 2:57:24McAdony in the left deep is going to face DeJesus.
- 2:57:27Goes into the stretch. Kavahar pretty good lead at second.
- 2:57:29Here's the pitch. Swung out and a liner caught for the shortstop.
- 2:57:33Hit it right to Pappy Frias.
- 2:57:35And that retires a side in the ninth inning.
- 2:57:40Line drive to short.
- 2:57:42No runs, no hits. One man left on.
- 2:57:46And the Montreal Expos come to bat in the bottom of the ninth inning
- 2:57:50against Bruce Sitter, and it's all tied at four apiece.
- 2:57:59When you brew a beer in God's country, you begin with sparkling pure Wisconsin spring water.
- 2:58:07Water that flows deep beneath the ground.
- 2:58:10Then you pure brew, double brew it in a traditional old world way called poisoning.
- 2:58:17Coisening is the most natural way to brew beer and the most expensive.
- 2:58:22Most expensive because it takes more time.
- 2:58:26But Heilermann's Old Style is one American premium beer that is still fully, that's fully poisoned.
- 2:58:33Naturally carbonated. Because at Old Style, we don't aim to make the most beer.
- 2:58:40Only the best. Taste the difference Kroisening makes.
- 2:58:44Try Old Style. Pure brewed in God's country.
- 2:58:52G. Heilermann Brewing Company, La Crosse, Wisconsin.
- 2:58:57Jane Klein stays in the game to play in right field.
- 2:59:05Stepping into the batter's box for the first time tonight is Jerry White.
- 2:59:09Came in to play right field.
- 2:59:12In the top of the inning, a little left-hander.
- 2:59:18Left post of this year down in the minors.
- 2:59:21It's two for five since being brought up from Denver.
- 2:59:24Sitter in the windup. Jerry White takes in. It's a strike.
- 2:59:29Well, the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 2:59:31One step nearer eliminating both the Cardinals and the Cubs and perhaps the Pirates tonight with a victory over the New York Mets.
- 2:59:38Sitters next pitch is a ball too low.
- 2:59:41Cardinals after losing their first game tonight in Philadelphia, defeating the Mets 8-2.
- 2:59:471-1 delivery. Swung on at a high foul. It's got to be out of play down the left field line.
- 2:59:52Magic number now for the Cardinals is at 2.
- 2:59:56And should the Cubs lose here tonight, it would be the same for the Cubs.
- 3:00:02Pirates won their first game at St. Louis 4-3.
- 3:00:06The Philadelphia victory reduces their magic number in eliminating the Pirates to 9.
- 3:00:15There's a swing and he pulls the ground ball over the pitcher's mound. The Hays who's charging in throws. He can't get him.
- 3:00:20That guy is awfully fast, let me tell you.
- 3:00:23The Hays who's wound up almost on the dirt around first base.
- 3:00:29Charging in for that tap over the mound.
- 3:00:32Made a very fine play, but that Jerry White can fly down the line.
- 3:00:37And he is on with an infield single.
- 3:00:42And they tied up the ball game and the eighth inning was won out.
- 3:00:46And Tony Perez reached for the ground ball back of third base that had to be just barely on the chalk.
- 3:00:55And he managed to lay it out.
- 3:00:57Despite a good play by Anabaris.
- 3:00:59That led to the tying run of the ball game because with two men off, Gary Carter then doubled and brought in the pinch runner Pepe Frias.
- 3:01:10Now we're in the ninth tied at 4-4.
- 3:01:15Will McEnany came on to relieve.
- 3:01:28And called by Dick Williams. He wants to talk to this man down there at first base.
- 3:01:43Was it Jerry White, anything wrong with him or not after he went all the way down that line and came back?
- 3:01:49Did anything really move?
- 3:01:50No, not only one correction, now we get two corrections in a ball game.
- 3:01:54That's important.
