- 0:06Speaker 1: Good morning, Ben.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Good morning. Good morning.
- 0:09Speaker 1: It's an oldie but a goodie today. Yes, yes.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Rev your engines, folks, because Dom Toretto is back in
- 0:15Speaker 2: the cinema. The Fast and the Furious at 25 years old.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Can you believe it?
- 0:19Speaker 1: This is all pre-Tesla days. Oh, my gosh.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Doesn't it make you feel old? Came out in 2001.
- 0:25Speaker 2: And now it's incredible to think of this franchise now, right?
- 0:28Speaker 2: Like when this film came out, critics were pretty lukewarm
- 0:31Speaker 2: and people thought, oh, you know, it's a pretty mindless
- 0:33Speaker 2: popcorn film. It is now a multiple billion dollar franchise.
- 0:38Speaker 2: The sequel was so stupid they called it Too Fast,
- 0:41Speaker 2: Too Furious.
- 0:42Speaker 1: I remember that. I thought that was quite clever.
- 0:45Speaker 2: One of the more recent movies is so silly that
- 0:48Speaker 2: they actually convert a car and send it into space.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Like, come on.
- 0:54Speaker 1: So anyway. Like a car at the end of Greece. Yes, exactly.
- 0:58Speaker 1: It's been done before. That's right.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Well, talking about being done before. So I had pretty
- 1:03Speaker 2: low expectations watching this movie. But then when I was
- 1:06Speaker 2: watching it, firstly, I really quite enjoyed it this time around.
- 1:09Speaker 2: But also, it's just so painfully obvious that it is
- 1:13Speaker 2: a not so subtle remake of Point Break. The films
- 1:16Speaker 2: are exactly the same. So I did a deep dive
- 1:19Speaker 2: scene by scene. It is so similar. It's not even funny.
- 1:23Speaker 2: It opens with some sort of heist. Both films do that.
- 1:26Speaker 2: You've got the hero is a young undercover cop, Keanu
- 1:30Speaker 2: in Point Break playing Johnny Utah and Paul Walker, RIP,
- 1:34Speaker 2: playing Brian. Worst name for a hero ever. And Brian,
- 1:38Speaker 2: like it's just really not, compared to Johnny Utah, give
- 1:40Speaker 2: me a break.
- 1:41Speaker 1: It's true.
- 1:42Speaker 2: And so, and then on the other side of the coin,
- 1:45Speaker 2: you've got the leader of this criminal gang played by
- 1:49Speaker 2: like a classic kind of warrior monk philosophers type. You've
- 1:52Speaker 2: got Patrick Swayze as Bodhi, who was just full of wisdoms,
- 1:57Speaker 2: full of wisdoms. And then in Fast and the Furious,
- 2:01Speaker 2: of course, you've got Vin Diesel as Dom with that
- 2:03Speaker 2: famous line, he lives his life a quarter mile at
- 2:05Speaker 2: a time. which, you know, to this day, people still
- 2:08Speaker 2: say that in pop culture. Incredibly powerful, that line. And
- 2:11Speaker 2: then on top of that, you know, you've got extreme sports.
- 2:14Speaker 2: In Point Break, it's surfing and skydiving. In this, it's
- 2:16Speaker 2: street racing. And it just continues from there. There's a
- 2:19Speaker 2: scene with a sandwich. There's a scene with a sandwich.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Is it a better remake of Point Break than the
- 2:24Speaker 1: remake of Point Break? Oh, nice question.
- 2:26Speaker 2: The remake of Point Break in 2015 was hot garbage.
- 2:29Speaker 1: It was unwatchable.
- 2:31Speaker 2: But meanwhile, The Fast and the Furious, I was actually
- 2:33Speaker 2: pleasantly surprised at how well it's held up. The car
- 2:36Speaker 2: racing scenes, which I thought wouldn't have aged well because
- 2:39Speaker 2: obviously we've got huge improvements in CGI these days, they
- 2:42Speaker 2: were actually awesome. They were so visceral and cool. I
- 2:46Speaker 2: was invested in these car racing scenes, and I'm not
- 2:48Speaker 2: a big car guy. The one difference is, and the
- 2:51Speaker 2: reason why Point Break became such a cult hit, and
- 2:54Speaker 2: The Fast and the Furious was just the first movie
- 2:56Speaker 2: in a very successful franchise, is because the ending of
- 2:58Speaker 2: Point Break, you remember that? Yeah. That epic scene where
- 3:01Speaker 2: Johnny Utah finally catches Bodie, but it's at Bell's Beach
- 3:04Speaker 2: at a hundred year storm. And he could have arrested him,
- 3:08Speaker 2: but he goes, nah, just go out for one more surf, bro.
- 3:11Speaker 2: And they both know that he's never coming back. He's
- 3:14Speaker 2: never coming back from that surf. And there's an epic
- 3:17Speaker 2: wipeout at the end of The Fast and the Furious 2.
- 3:18Speaker 2: The same situation, exactly the same situation. Brian tracks down Dom.
- 3:24Speaker 2: They have one final confrontation and he goes, do you
- 3:27Speaker 2: know what? I'm just going to let you do one
- 3:28Speaker 2: more drag race.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Okay.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Just like one more surf.
- 3:30Speaker 1: And there's a big wipeout. Your luck's going to run out.
- 3:32Speaker 1: There's a big wipeout.
- 3:33Speaker 2: But instead of, if Dom had died in that, I
- 3:36Speaker 2: reckon then Fast and the Furious would be a point
- 3:38Speaker 2: break classic as well. But instead, he prangs his 1970
- 3:41Speaker 2: Dodge Charger and just walks away from it. He probably
- 3:44Speaker 2: wasn't even wearing a seatbelt. And he walks away and
- 3:46Speaker 2: he's just like going to go another quarter mile.
- 3:48Speaker 1: And now, well, more than that, going into space.
- 3:50Speaker 2: And Brian goes, here you go, take my Toyota Supra.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Oh, boy. Fang it. So I don't think it won
- 3:55Speaker 1: any Academy Awards back in 2001. Is it going to
- 3:58Speaker 1: win any this year? Oh, look, no, it's not eligible.
- 4:01Speaker 2: But look, if you get a chance to go see
- 4:03Speaker 2: this in the cinema, this is good fun and pleasantly.
- 4:06Speaker 1: It's not that long.
- 4:07Speaker 2: It's only like 100 minutes. Well, how many nobody puts
- 4:09Speaker 2: Brian in a quarters are you giving it? I'm going
- 4:12Speaker 2: to give it three and a half. Three and a half.
- 4:14Speaker 2: I reckon I only gave it two the first time around.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Are you sure it's not because they got so incrementally worse.
- 4:20Speaker 1: This one looks good all of a sudden. Very possible.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Because the ones these days are two and a half
- 4:24Speaker 2: hours and nothing happens.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Surround yourself with the bad ones to make yourself look good.
- 4:29Speaker 1: I like it. Alright. Thanks mate. So it holds up
- 4:32Speaker 1: well after 25 years. We'll catch you again next week
