- 0:11Audi and welcome Second Hour the Morning Show with Preston Scott Show fifty one,
- 0:18twenty eight. It is Tuesday, April second, and it's great to be
- 0:22with you. Grant Allen over there running the radio program as always, and
- 0:25I am here relegated to Studio one B in our broadcast suites here at iHeartRadio.
- 0:32And so no matter where or how you are listening to us, we
- 0:36thank you very much for making time now one of the things that we have.
- 0:41You know, in the early days of this program, I used to
- 0:44end the show with make a Difference, and I would challenge people to find
- 0:48ways to make a difference, and we kind of let that go for a
- 0:51while, not necessarily the idea, but just the tagline ending the show.
- 0:57And now we've kind of formulated what I call the Mad Radio Network. And
- 1:02I'm teasing, I'm poking fun because Mad, obviously is how a lot of
- 1:07people on the left view people like me that I'm just mad and angry,
- 1:12and no, not really, I just want to make a difference and that's
- 1:15what we try to do. And so today is really this segment, set
- 1:21of segments is all about trying to find ways to leverage you all to make
- 1:26a difference. Now, this is Tallahassee Centric. That said, I promise
- 1:32you all pro dads is wherever you live in this country, it's everywhere.
- 1:37It's a thing, and it's a really important thing. And to talk about
- 1:42it here locally is Bo Walker? Now Bo Bo started listening to this program.
- 1:49How old were you when you were forcibly tied into your seat and made
- 1:53to listen? Oh? I was probably eight or nine, righting to school
- 1:57with my dad in the mornings and my brother and we love doing the trying
- 2:01to figure out the trivia questions together. It's a pizza come on. Yeah,
- 2:07absolutely, And so now you are. Now I am thirty two and
- 2:14married to my high school sweetheart. How cool is that? Father to triplet
- 2:17girls? Oh my goodness. Yeah. If ever, you've found a reason
- 2:23to pray for a man and you just heard it. Three girls are going
- 2:25to be teenagers at the same exact moment. But we found out at the
- 2:30end of the year. Boy on the way now all right, so all
- 2:31right, very excited about that. Awesome. Yeah, and you work at
- 2:37Generations Church. Yes, I'm the kids pastor at Generation's Church, been there
- 2:40for eleven years. But my father pastored there, So I've kind of grown
- 2:44up, you know, at that church. It's my home church and been
- 2:47there for a long time. Many of you and I. It's so funny
- 2:52because when I saw you, I said, that face looks familiar. And
- 2:55then it dawned on me when you gave me your dad's name, I knew
- 3:00your dad. Kenny Walker just a delightful man and a good man and a
- 3:06faithful servant to God. Yeah, he definitely had a huge heart for our
- 3:09community at the time Oak City, and then started the Team Challenge that's here
- 3:17in Tallahassee as well after he left Oak City. And so, yeah,
- 3:22huge heart for this community. And I attribute my heart for the community to
- 3:27him. And yeah, great man, you find yourself now doing what I
- 3:32think all good ministry does, getting outside the walls of a church. You
- 3:39know, the church obviously you know this. It's people, it's not a
- 3:42building. But we've we've sort of allowed the secular culture to push us into
- 3:47being a building as opposed to a to a group of people that are trying
- 3:53to reach outside. You are in the in the schools. Tell us about
- 3:58first the why why did you decide, Okay, I need to get into
- 4:02some of the elementary schools. Yeah, great question. I think for us,
- 4:08you know, our church is right in the middle of the three two
- 4:11three oh four zip code, and uh we talk about a fertile ground.
- 4:15Yeah, and uh, I don't know if you know, but a few
- 4:17years ago a study was done and per capita three two three oh four was
- 4:23ranked the uh porous zip code in all of Florida and with nearly fifty percent
- 4:29of kids living below the poverty line. So for me and our church,
- 4:32you know, we're we're thinking, you know, what, what can we
- 4:36do to help? What do we do? Uh? What? What's really
- 4:40the root of the issue here? Like is it is it drugs? Do
- 4:43people need food? Is it housing? You know, jobs? Is it
- 4:46drug you know what? What's the problem here? So just trying to get
- 4:49to the root of that issue. And uh, for for me, just
- 4:54looking into that, I realized that we really have a crisis in fatherlessness.
- 5:00And so if you look at the root of a lot of these issues,
- 5:02it goes back to there's not a father in kids' lives, and it leads
- 5:08to all kinds of different things. They need dads. Yeah, we're gonna
- 5:12pick up right there. Bo Walker with me, and we're gonna give you
- 5:15an email throughout and here it is bo at gctlh dot org. You're gonna
- 5:19want to remember that bo at gctlh dot org. BUTU Walker's a Kid's pastor
- 5:26associated pastor Generation's Church in Tallahassee, and I want to remind you if you're
- 5:30outside the Tallassee listening area, do not tune out on this because this is
- 5:34a problem plaguing this country. You know, when we talk about fatherlessness,
- 5:44I would probably change the language a little bit because in certain parts of our
- 5:48society, being a father's almost like a status symbol. We're talking about being
- 5:54a dad. There's a big difference because just about anybody can father. That's
- 5:58a guy, not just anybody's willing to be a dad. And we're looking
- 6:01for dads. And when you talk about bo what's going on in the three
- 6:06two three zero four zip code? You know I was mentioned in to you.
- 6:11Sheriff Walt McNeil did a study he and he talked about what he called
- 6:15it the anatomy of a murder or something to a homicide, and he drilled
- 6:19down into years of looking at the statistics and what's causing this, driving this
- 6:25and he arrived at a lot of the same conclusions. We need dads in
- 6:30these homes. Now there's a reality, and the reality is that there just
- 6:34aren't going to be dads walking in the door in a lot of the homes,
- 6:38certainly in your zip code. But this goes across the city, and
- 6:41it goes across the state, and it goes across the country. So explain
- 6:45the approach that you take with all pro dads. Yeah, I was just
- 6:49gonna mention along with that real quick. Our own state government did a study
- 6:54on this, I think it was last year, and Governor DeSantis, along
- 6:58with a lot of the leaders of all pro Dads, we're kind of addressing
- 7:01this problem. And some of the statistics they found were that kids who grow
- 7:05up in fatherless homes three times more likely to go to jail. Sixty percent
- 7:11of youth suicides come from fatherless homes, seventy percent of high school dropouts come
- 7:15from fatherless homes. But with a present and positive father at home, it
- 7:19doubles a child's chances of going to college and getting a stable job. And
- 7:26so I just believe that if we can fix fatherhood, we can change the
- 7:30world. And I think that with all pro Dads. It's not the answer,
- 7:34but it's a step in the right direction. And so All pro Dads
- 7:39is a character based education program that we're able to do in the public school
- 7:43system. We do it during school hours, so that's pretty cool. And
- 7:47so I lead chapters locally at Sable Palm and Rudiger And the big things that
- 7:55stick out to me for dads is that there's just power in showing up.
- 8:00Yes, there's power and encouragement. We see the PSAs on television sometimes it
- 8:05just say be there, yeah, being present, be there. Yeah.
- 8:09Tell me it was the decision for you to link up with All pro Dads,
- 8:13which is you know, I mean, you're not gonna be able to
- 8:16quote preach the gospel, you just live it in front of these kids because
- 8:20you're in school hours, you're on school property, right, Yeah, there's
- 8:22some limitations to what you can do, right Yeah. Absolutely. So I
- 8:28knew that going in, but I knew that being faithful to All pro Dads
- 8:31would open other doors. Absolutely. And God's done some cool things with that
- 8:37about allowing us to do some gospel centered stuff like in after school programs,
- 8:43and so it's really opened some cool doors spiritually. But of course to all
- 8:46pro dads, you know, even last week, I just had a dad
- 8:50afterwards who shared that he had an older son who had in the last couple
- 8:54of weeks committed suicide. Oh and I just said, hey, man,
- 8:58can I can I pray with you? I just pray for you. And
- 9:01after I prayed, he was like, would would you mind if at our
- 9:03next meeting, I just kind of shared my story of the importance of dads,
- 9:09you know, being in their kids' lives, and you know, like
- 9:11and so there's just it just opened some really cool doors and you know,
- 9:16the ability to minister to people. Even though I'm not proclaiming Jesus from a
- 9:20stage, it just at that moment, at that moment, right right,
- 9:24but it has opened doors to do so and people, you know, getting
- 9:28plugged into our church and coming to different things that we do as a church.
- 9:31But that was never my goal, and you know, it wasn't my
- 9:33primary goal in the beginning. You know, I just wanted to try to
- 9:37encourage dads and and make a difference in dads and kids' lives. All right.
- 9:41When we come back, as I said, this is the Mad Radio
- 9:45Network. It's about finding ways to make a difference. So what can you
- 9:48do? We're going to talk very specifically about that, which is why I
- 9:52gave you the email address bo at g C t lh dot org. Bo
- 10:01bo at gctlh dot org. More. Next on the Morning Show with Preston
- 10:05Scott fla on your phone with the iHeartRadio app and on hundreds of devices like
- 10:09Alexa, Google Home, Xbox and so noos. This says Chrisler and Ihearts
- 10:13Radio station. Regular listeners of the program would remember years ago we had Tony
- 10:24Dungee on the show talking about all pro dads and we're looking for all pro
- 10:31dads. We're looking for you to be an all pro dad. We're looking
- 10:33for people that might want to help out, and we'll get to that in
- 10:37just a second. Boat Walker with me. He leads the groups at Rudiger
- 10:39and Sable Palm Elementary and is with Generations Church. Bo take us inside a
- 10:46meeting. How does it start? Yes, So my favorite moment is how
- 10:52it starts every month with what we call the Pride moment. And I asked
- 10:56dads to just take a couple minutes and share with their child why they're proud
- 11:01of them this month. So I say, hey, don't just tell them
- 11:03you're proud of them, but be specific, give them a specific reason I'm
- 11:07proud of you because and it's so cool just to see kids light up in
- 11:11that moment. As dads speak, life and encouragement over their kids. So
- 11:13our meetings are all about letting dads show up, encourage their kids, and
- 11:18then just have meaningful conversations about life's topics like integrity, self control, gentleness,
- 11:24kindness, courage, things like an expanded version of a manly minute.
- 11:28Yeah. Absolutely. Let's now get real practical. What do you do for
- 11:37kids who don't have a dad showing up in their life but want to come
- 11:43to these meetings or they signed up dad says they're coming and dad doesn't show
- 11:48up. Yeah. Absolutely, So first of all, let me say that
- 11:54we have grandpa's, uncles, you know, all kinds of family members who
- 11:58show up as the father figure. So if you're a grandpa uncle, you
- 12:03can come to an all pro dad's meeting. If you're just someone who has
- 12:07a heart for kids who maybe don't have a father figure, a positive father
- 12:09figure in their life, we would love for you to come in, you
- 12:13know, as kind of an adopted dad for the day. For the meetings,
- 12:16and you know, kind of kind of probably I would imagine kind of
- 12:20through Leon County Schools, we could set them up as kind of like a
- 12:22mentor for a kid and be able to come to the breakfast and spend time
- 12:26with them. We could absolutely do that. Sometimes we have volunteer groups come
- 12:31in who will help kind of adopt kids for the day whose dads didn't show
- 12:35up to a meeting. But yeah, there's a number of ways we can
- 12:39get volunteers plugged into be a dad so to speak. When are the meetings,
- 12:45So we usually meet once a month. The usually the last the last
- 12:48week of the month. I'm usually at Rudiger the last Wednesday of the month,
- 12:54and the last Thursday I'm at Sable Palm. And the meetings are from
- 12:58nine to nine thirty okay in the morning, So the kids are excused from
- 13:01class for that time period. Yes, So if they're signed up, they
- 13:05you know, their teachers get a list and there they get called from class
- 13:09to come to the cafeteria and the dads are checking in And that's another favorite
- 13:13moment is when the dads and kids lock eyes when they first come into the
- 13:18room and the kid runs and gives them a big bear hut because sometimes dad
- 13:20doesn't live with their child, right, and so this is another time they
- 13:26can be together. Yeah, yeah, it's really cool. How else can
- 13:30people help? I mean there's a there has to be a financial component to
- 13:33this that that does the lifting. Yes, So I've been at the Rudiger
- 13:37Chapter for probably going on ten years now, and up until now, our
- 13:41church is just kind of footed the bill every month and then Sable Palm we've
- 13:46been there for a couple of years. It costs about two hundred dollars to
- 13:50provide breakfast for the dads and the kids. We typically do donuts and juice
- 13:54and coffee and then so that that provides the meal for them. So you're
- 14:00looking at two hundred dollars a month, which isn't isn't bad to feed all
- 14:03these dads and kids. We usually do eight meetings a year, so sixteen
- 14:09hundred dollars you can pay for an entire year of all pro dads and making
- 14:11sure these kids and dads get a good breakfast. And we will spoil them
- 14:16every now and then with a hot breakfast when we can. And there's some
- 14:20prizes that every now and then you'll give out little drawings and things. Yeah,
- 14:22absolutely, all Pro Dad's partnered with Scholastic and Scholastick actually donates books that
- 14:30go along with the topics we're talking about, So we get those for free.
- 14:33We'll use those. But yeah, I like to throw in some fun
- 14:35prizes all or something like that. Yeah, are some all Pro Dad merch
- 14:39nice. I'll usually get some of that stuff off their website and try to
- 14:43give T shirts and stuff like that away. So yeah, but two hundred
- 14:46dollars, two hundred and fifty dollars would cover an entire meeting for you know,
- 14:52the meal, giveaways, anything like that. So here's the challenge.
- 14:56First of all, if you can give your time. There's some of you
- 15:00you're retired, Uh, you've got the time to give for others. Maybe
- 15:03you're a business owner, maybe you own your own business and you're looking for
- 15:07something to really impact the community generationally. Is this is family tree changing stuff
- 15:13that we're talking about here, Maybe eight businesses listening right now can take one
- 15:20month and just donate to take care of both of the schools. Maybe we
- 15:26got sixteen businesses that will take care of one school and one will take care
- 15:31of another, and we'll i mean, how you know you know the math
- 15:33folks, you've heard the number. If you can help, we're going to
- 15:37get to that email bo at gctl dot org. Bo at gctlh dot org.
- 15:46Send them a note, just say tell me more whatever, and uh,
- 15:50let's step up and help, let's make these meetings happen, and both.
- 15:56Thanks for what you're doing. I appreciate it. Thank you, my
- 15:58best to your brother and your family. Thank you so much. Bu Walker
- 16:00Generations Church, my guest, all pro dads, boy, all you have
- 16:06to do is listen to one program of the Morning Show with Preston Scott and
- 16:08you realize how badly we need dads. It's twenty seven minutes after the hour.
- 16:15The news is next
