Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Now the far right's doing well in Austria. Gevin Grays
- 0:02Speaker 1: at UK you're a correspondent, Gavin, good morning.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Good morning to you. Yes it is now. According to
- 0:09Speaker 2: projections based on initial results, the far right Freedom Party
- 0:13Speaker 2: is heading for an unprecedented general election victory. Its estimate
- 0:18Speaker 2: did'll have over twenty nine percent of the vote. That's
- 0:21Speaker 2: three points ahead of the Conservative People's Party. But it's
- 0:25Speaker 2: short of a majority, and that is the sticking point right,
- 0:28Speaker 2: because most of the other parties, all but once say
- 0:32Speaker 2: they will not go into coalition with them. However, having
- 0:36Speaker 2: said that, the Freedom Party, if it is the biggest party,
- 0:39Speaker 2: will be entitled to try and lead a coalition government.
- 0:42Speaker 2: So all sorts of things going on here. Why is
- 0:44Speaker 2: it so controversial for the six point three million Austrians
- 0:47Speaker 2: eligible to vote well because of overtones going back to
- 0:53Speaker 2: the Nazis and the World War. The Freedom Party's leader
- 0:57Speaker 2: has promised to Austrians to build fortress Austria. Who's restore security,
- 1:02Speaker 2: prosperity and peace. He's called himself the People's Chancellor, and
- 1:06Speaker 2: believe it or not, that was what Adolph Hitler described
- 1:09Speaker 2: himself as in Nazi Germany. So all sorts of overtones here.
- 1:12Speaker 2: We expect their full results later.
- 1:14Speaker 1: It's interesting, isn't it, Because you have these far right parties,
- 1:16Speaker 1: not just an Austria, but all over you're popping up
- 1:18Speaker 1: and then you have other parties sung on we won't
- 1:20Speaker 1: work with them.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right. So in the Netherlands, Gertz Wilder's Freedom
- 1:26Speaker 2: Party one, but he dropped his bid to become prime
- 1:28Speaker 2: minister so that other parties would agree to form a
- 1:31Speaker 2: coalition with him. However, in Italy Georgia, Maloney had a
- 1:35Speaker 2: right wing coalition as leader of the far right party.
- 1:38Speaker 2: So there are some around but yeah, big pressure to
- 1:41Speaker 2: actually take note to the voters.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, Gevin, thank you very much for that. That's
- 1:45Speaker 1: Kevin Gray, who's our UK europe correspondent with US Live
- 1:48Speaker 1: this morning.
