- 0:06Good evening. Hope everyone is well tonight.
- 0:09I am thankful to be here. I'm thankful for the privilege
- 0:13of being able to be here and to be a part of this summer series.
- 0:18Anytime you get the opportunity to present from God's word and
- 0:23to preach the gospel is a blessing.
- 0:25When you get invited back to a place over a couple of times.
- 0:30It just really warms my heart and I don't know that I had a
- 0:34whole lot to do with. I think it may be more from the
- 0:36goodness of brother Jason's heart.
- 0:38To get invited. But honestly, I am thrilled to
- 0:42be here with this good congregation tonight.
- 0:47I think a lot of this congregation the what Uncle
- 0:50Church of Christ. You are blessed with good
- 0:53leaders. You're blessed with good
- 0:55Ministry people. And I think the world of brother
- 1:00Eric lions, got a friend. I think brother, Eric is down at
- 1:03Luverne tonight, and that's where I grew up and the Luverne.
- 1:07And no, he's kicking off their summer series and Luverne and
- 1:11Noah. I know they're going to be
- 1:13blessed by the lesson that he shares with them tonight.
- 1:17I'm very thankful to be with the brother Jason brother, Rob.
- 1:21I thought he's gonna get up here.
- 1:22Late pizza, man. You'll ever learn a blade Pizza
- 1:26Man. Y'all have to go to Camp to do
- 1:27that. But anyway, Rob's a great song
- 1:29later. I spoke to brother Terry.
- 1:31I said, brother Terry the last time I was here you led the
- 1:34singing. I don't know if I scared him off
- 1:36from leading the singing tonight.
- 1:38I don't know that he did a really good job, but brother
- 1:42Jason I couldn't help but think about and the older I get the
- 1:47more I tried to make sure I think about the blessings.
- 1:52That we have in life. I'm blessed.
- 1:57I'm blessed by the fact that I have a lord and savior.
- 2:03I have the hope of Heaven, not because of me, because of the
- 2:10grace and mercy that comes from our father in Heaven.
- 2:14I'm thankful for the mom and dad that the Lord blessed me with
- 2:20Paula younger brother. My little brother Dane.
- 2:23He is my little brother now, he fits perfectly right up under my
- 2:27arm, and I do not do like that but he will attest to the
- 2:32blessing that we have of our dad's been gone since 2001, but
- 2:37our mother is still with us just turned 85 April.
- 2:40The 17th just a few weeks months and a half ago.
- 2:43Go. We're blessed to have her still
- 2:45with us. And I know I'm not the only one
- 2:48who could make this statement because I know where brother
- 2:51Jason comes from. I know, where brother here it
- 2:54comes from. I, sadly.
- 2:57I regret that I just met Rob's dad at his mother's visitation
- 3:05wheat lady we Christian lady, but you know, I went to the
- 3:10line. I spoke to your dad's probably
- 3:11had about a minutes conversation with And I love you and me and I
- 3:16understand how Jonathan felt when he when his soul was knit.
- 3:23The David. And I say that because I'm sure
- 3:26I could go on throughout this congregation and there are a
- 3:28number of us a good number of us and I hope that's the case.
- 3:32We can talk about the families that we come from and the
- 3:35legacies that were passed down to us.
- 3:39And that's a great blessing. Now you say, how does that tie
- 3:44in to the subject that you are to speak to us on tonight?
- 3:49The subject of self-control? Well.
- 3:54I can't help but think about and I've shared this with young
- 3:56people next, not this coming up week, but the week following
- 4:00I'll have the opportunity to go back to count.
- 4:02Wiregrass. They go on for probably nearly
- 4:0640 years. It may be getting close the time
- 4:10for me to retire. But I love going to Camp.
- 4:14I love spending the week with those kids. and every time I
- 4:18read the book of Ruth, And you know you get on them over into
- 4:22the story of Ruth and Naomi and about the first time Ruth ever
- 4:28meets Boaz, and I'm paraphrasing a little bit here.
- 4:32But Boaz, he's being real good to her.
- 4:36Treating her. Very kindly graciously
- 4:40benevolently and she asked him. Why are you treating me this
- 4:44way? You've never met me?
- 4:47Why are you treating me this way?
- 4:49He tells her your reputation has preceded you.
- 4:55Once you've done for Naomi your faithfulness to her and sticking
- 5:00by her side that has come before you and we know you already, we
- 5:05know you by reputation. And I would encourage all of us
- 5:10but especially those young for. I love to see this group of
- 5:14young folks, right up here at the front.
- 5:15That's just that's a compliment to you.
- 5:18I appreciate you. Y'all are supporting me whether
- 5:20you know, it or not, but I thank you for being Where You Are.
- 5:25But you make the choices you make.
- 5:27Good decision. He try to do what right to the
- 5:32best of your ability, and every situation.
- 5:36And that will go before you and that will open doors.
- 5:40God will use that to open doors for you to do great things.
- 5:47The serve people most importantly, the serve God.
- 5:53Here, I want you to hear this. Whatever blessing has come your
- 5:58way because of your legacy. Whatever Legacy that may have
- 6:03been passed down to you. You know how long it would take
- 6:06to destroy that? About that long.
- 6:12If we fail to exercise self-control.
- 6:19That's how important this topic of self-control is, you know,
- 6:23where we're studying from Galatians chapter 5, verses 22
- 6:27through 25, but the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace,
- 6:34long-suffering and kindness and goodness and faithfulness and
- 6:39gentleness. I want to take my time on each
- 6:41one because you'll be studying all of those fruits of the
- 6:45spirit. Throughout these series of
- 6:48lessons this summer. Watch last in the list number
- 6:52nine self-control. Against such, there is no law
- 7:00and those who are Christ's have crucified.
- 7:02The flesh with its passions and desires.
- 7:07If we live in the spirit, let us also walk in the spirit.
- 7:17The life of every individual in which the spirit dwells that's
- 7:23talking about God's. Holy spirit, that indwells every
- 7:26Christian. It's a part of you.
- 7:30That life is a successful life that life is a happy life that
- 7:35person truly succeeds in life because they put forth the
- 7:39effort in their daily lives to Bear the Fruit of the Spirit.
- 7:45In this lesson, our Focus will be on that night, on that final
- 7:49aspect of the fruit of the spirit that aspect of
- 7:54self-control. I believe it would be good for
- 7:57us as we begin tonight to to Define what we mean when we talk
- 8:02about self control and to do that, lets first notice Maybe.
- 8:09A couple of things that self-control this is not an
- 8:11exhaustive list, but maybe it'll give you an idea of what we're
- 8:14talking about. Some things that self-control is
- 8:18not First of all, let me submit to you that exercising
- 8:23self-control does not require us as Christians to keep anger or
- 8:30to keep rage bottled up inside forever.
- 8:35There are some things that are happening in our society today.
- 8:38That should make us angry. It should get these things
- 8:44should make our blood boil. When you think about the
- 8:49innocence in this world, I am the innocent people.
- 8:54The little Innocents in this world and how they're treated.
- 8:57Even in the womb, how they're mistreated.
- 9:02When you think about God's first institution, God, put two great
- 9:06institutions in this world. The first one is the home.
- 9:12Obviously. The second one is the church
- 9:14established on the day of Pentecost, but the home was
- 9:17established with the very first of time, wasn't it?
- 9:21You think about what our society?
- 9:23And now, the law is trying to get on their side and they are
- 9:27denigrating. They are corrupting.
- 9:32God's institution of marriage. My opinion that should make us
- 9:38angry. Because that's very
- 9:41disrespectful to what God has done to the blessings that he's
- 9:45handed down to us. Self-control does not require us
- 9:49as Christians to keep that anger and that rage bottled up inside
- 9:53forever. But I want you to hear this, it
- 9:57does require that we find some legitimate outlet for the
- 10:02expression of those negative feelings.
- 10:06No, Christian goes outside the law to express their anger.
- 10:11About anything. We do it within the bounds of
- 10:15what's good. And right and acceptable, in the
- 10:18eyes of God. But neither does having
- 10:21self-control, for example, in the use of time prevent us from
- 10:27ever doing anything spontaneously without prior
- 10:32planning and preparation. Indeed, when you think about it,
- 10:35the very idea of doing something spontaneously, it suggests that,
- 10:41as a rule. We operate according to a
- 10:47schedule. Being self controlled in the use
- 10:51of time that does require us to spend our time.
- 10:55According to a plan. We've mapped it out ahead of
- 10:58time. And then by exercising
- 11:02self-control, we can occasionally enjoy doing
- 11:05something, unplanned, doing something spontaneous.
- 11:11So how then are we to understand the virtue of self-control that
- 11:16fruit of the spirit, that is referred to as self-control.
- 11:21Well, the Greek word that is translated.
- 11:23Let me tell you right up front. I'm not a Greek scholar.
- 11:26I'm probably going to spell the word for you, instead of trying
- 11:28to pronounce it kyun. Kar 80 CIA.
- 11:34That's the Greek word that is translated self-control.
- 11:38Well, you know, in the King James version, it is rendered
- 11:42temperance. However, we Vine said
- 11:47self-control is the preferable rendering.
- 11:52As Temperance is now limited to one form of self-control.
- 11:57That being abstinence from alcoholic, drink, abstaining
- 12:01from keeping away from drinking alcoholic beverages.
- 12:06I don't think any of us are old enough to have actually
- 12:09experienced the temperance movement, but maybe you read
- 12:13about and heard about it in history.
- 12:14And that's what that was all about from the 19th and early
- 12:1720th. Centuries the late eighteen and
- 12:21Early 1900s to encourage people a movement to encourage people
- 12:26to abstain from the use of alcoholic beverages.
- 12:31Bang goes on to say the various Powers bestowed by God upon man
- 12:36are capable of abuse. The Right Use demands, the
- 12:41controlling power of the will under the operation of the
- 12:47spirit of God. Other words in other words,
- 12:51ultimately, God is the one who has control.
- 12:57In his lexicon Walter Bauer says that the word refers to
- 13:01exercising, Restraint of one's emotions ones.
- 13:06Impulses and one's desire. Perhaps it is significant that
- 13:12Paul puts out of control last in his list, just as it may be just
- 13:18as significant that he placed love at the first of the Liz.
- 13:24What does love to love sums up the attributes that follow in
- 13:29that list? Self-control though provides the
- 13:35key to the acquisition. Of all of those other
- 13:39attributes. For example, how can the
- 13:42Christian be good and kind and loving and faithful and gentle
- 13:46and patient and long-suffering only through the exercise of
- 13:52self-control. Can we accomplish those other
- 13:55attributes? The normal natural fleshly.
- 13:59Tendency is to be impatient. It's to be unkind.
- 14:07It is to hold grudges even seek revenge.
- 14:13Don't worry. I'll get you back.
- 14:16That's the human natural. Human tendency, isn't it?
- 14:20And it is also to yield to sensual temptation.
- 14:27Only by developing self-control. Can we say no to the practices
- 14:31of the world and at the same time?
- 14:35Yes to the attributes of spirituality.
- 14:40It is about what we avoid. It is about staying away from
- 14:45those things that can cause our bodies harm that can cause our
- 14:49minds harm. And at the same time can cause
- 14:52us to sin in such a way to separate us from our God.
- 14:56But it is also moving toward the positive side and developing,
- 15:01the spirituality, the spiritual characteristics.
- 15:06The God would have us to imitate.
- 15:09The importance of the Christians being self-controlled.
- 15:12Is evident from the lack of self-control that permeates our
- 15:17society today. Jesus Christ himself.
- 15:21Preached self control, self denial.
- 15:25If you will. If anyone desires to come after
- 15:28me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me,
- 15:35Matthew 16 verse 24 Yeah, do yeah, what do most Societies in
- 15:41our world today practice? They practice self-indulgence
- 15:48rather than self-control. For example, those who were born
- 15:52in the United States between 1946 and 1965.
- 15:58My brother Jason, I fall into that category more toward the
- 16:021965 than the 1946. Let me just say that very
- 16:05quickly, but I do fall into that category, but we came to be
- 16:10known as the me generation. They seem to be interested to
- 16:17mainly if not solely, in me, in self you ever heard the term
- 16:23narcissism. Narcissism being in love with
- 16:28oneself or even with one's image.
- 16:32Was rampant. There was a new emphasis on
- 16:35self-assertiveness and self-fulfillment, which
- 16:40suggested that self was the center of each person's
- 16:43universe. so, while this generation is aging, Yes, we
- 16:49are. And a lot of them have pretty
- 16:53much aged out. It appears likely that the
- 16:57generations that have followed our law or less interested in
- 17:01indulging or themselves. The or that they that's
- 17:07unlikely. That there are any less than
- 17:09that be generation of indulging themselves.
- 17:15Not only is self-control particularly native because it
- 17:18is lacking. It is also needed because the
- 17:22Christian is commanded to be, they'll control.
- 17:29Peter play self-control alongside borrow Excellence,
- 17:35godliness brotherly kindness and other virtues, which the
- 17:40Christian is to add to his faith.
- 17:44Second Peter chapter 1 verses 5 through 7.
- 17:48Paul preached, the need for self-control when he presented
- 17:52the cop, the gospel to Felix. You remember how he reason with
- 17:55him about righteousness self-control and the Judgment
- 18:01become the Judgment that we're all going to face.
- 18:05One day acts 24:25 the Elders of the church as leaders of the
- 18:12flock as examples to the flock. They are commanded to be
- 18:17self-controlled Titus. Chapter 1 Verse 8.
- 18:22Paul further, indicated the need for self-control when he cited
- 18:26the strict self-control that was exercised by the athletes of his
- 18:31day as an example. For Christians to follow.
- 18:36Remember what Paul said? He said everyone who competes
- 18:39for the prize is temperate. In other words, self-controlled
- 18:45and All Things. First Corinthians, 9, verses,
- 18:4724, and 25. Matter of fact, he went on to
- 18:52use himself as an example of self-control.
- 18:56He said, in verse 27, First Corinthians chapter 9.
- 18:59He said I discipline my body daily King James version, says
- 19:04what? I Buffett my body, I'm
- 19:07translations. Even say I beat my body.
- 19:10That's not abuse. That's not what he's talking
- 19:13about in any way. It means discipline to the point
- 19:16that I have controlled. My body and my appetites and my
- 19:20desires, they don't control me. I'm in control Hall says, I
- 19:24discipline my body and I make it my slave.
- 19:27Why is that necessary? Well, listen to what else Paul
- 19:31says. So that after I have preached to
- 19:35others. I myself not be disqualified.
- 19:42You know, I have to be careful, not to get off on a tangent
- 19:45here, but does the bible teach once once saved always saved?
- 19:51Absolutely, not Paul. You think he was saved.
- 19:57You think he was a save man? Absolutely, he was, but he
- 20:01understood what? I need to keep myself under self
- 20:05control under God's control. Or I could lose my salvation if
- 20:12I fail to do that. So as Christians, we are to be
- 20:16different from those in the world.
- 20:19While we do not despise self. No, you know, what does the
- 20:25Bible say about loving your neighbor?
- 20:28It says to love your neighbor has wide as yourself, we're to
- 20:32love ourselves, Matthew 22, verse 39, but yet at the same
- 20:37time. We know that self is not the
- 20:40most important thing in the world.
- 20:44Self is not always to be fulfilled, not always to be
- 20:47asserted, not always even to be indulged.
- 20:52Sometimes self must be denied and always self must be
- 21:00controlled. The life in which the spirit
- 21:04dwells is different from others around it, because self-control
- 21:09is an obvious characteristic that makes the difference.
- 21:14Clear people see the difference in your life because you choose
- 21:19to be self control. To understand how self-control
- 21:25effects each life. Let's use as an example.
- 21:29The example, of two homes. In one self-control is not
- 21:34practiced and in the other, it is.
- 21:39Now, in a home where self-control is absent, where
- 21:42self-control is not practiced, the financial affairs of the
- 21:46family are likely to be a mess. The members of the family buy
- 21:52things on credit with no idea of how they will ever pay for them.
- 21:57They might borrow money and be unable to pay it back.
- 22:01Their payments on debts are over, do you?
- 22:05They do not think about the future and therefore they are
- 22:09unable to save money. Their lives are disorganized.
- 22:15Since they do not make the effort to follow a schedule and
- 22:19they may be frequently late to work.
- 22:23We get appointments. Late, the Bible study and
- 22:26worship eventually. Maybe not even attending at all.
- 22:32Perhaps they sleep late when they need to get up early.
- 22:36They are unable with their disorganized lifestyle, to find
- 22:40time, even to read the Bible. Can you imagine going days and
- 22:44weeks without even praying coach, you don't find the time?
- 22:49Or to have family devotionals. They do things on the spur of
- 22:54the moment and they later regret that they wasted their time on
- 22:58fruitless endeavor. The home of such a family.
- 23:05The house. The dwelling place in which they
- 23:07live, is sure to be disorganized because they have no plans kids,
- 23:13you the family members do not find time even to clean the
- 23:16house. And for this reason, the house
- 23:20is usually messy and items often cannot be found.
- 23:24Especially when they're needed. More significant is the fact
- 23:29that members of the family give into the appetites of the flesh.
- 23:35I do so without hesitation. If there's food to be eaten.
- 23:42Batman. Jack it up a little bit.
- 23:45There's food. We eat more.
- 23:46They do, eat it. Even if they know that they
- 23:50should not eat so much. They eat it anyway.
- 23:53If there is fun to be enjoyed, they are determined to enjoy it,
- 23:58no matter what price, they have to pay the next day.
- 24:04There are likely to succumb to Temptations.
- 24:06To drink, are skating beverages to gamble to use illegal, drugs,
- 24:12or even to engage, in illicit, sexual activities, with little
- 24:18or no, thought for the consequences.
- 24:22Let me assure you all of that comes with consequences.
- 24:28But the one who is who does not exercise help control doesn't
- 24:31think ahead of time about those consequences.
- 24:37Now, obviously these consequences of the lack of
- 24:40self-control are not all equally damaging.
- 24:46For example, having a messy home is not a sin. whereas, giving in
- 24:53to the temptation to commit fornication certainly is
- 24:59Nevertheless, it is obvious that a home without self-control is
- 25:05not likely to be a successful home by anyone's standard.
- 25:11And then more importantly than that.
- 25:13It is certainly not likely to be a home in which, and by which
- 25:17God is glorified. Certainly, this would also be
- 25:23true of the life. Not just the home, several
- 25:27people involved in that. But the individual life of any
- 25:32individual that this describe. Thank contrast.
- 25:38This picture a home where the spirit produces self-control
- 25:42where the spirit is allowed to produce self-control.
- 25:48The members of this family use their economic resources, no
- 25:53matter what level they are. You may make plenty of money,
- 25:56may not make a lot, but what you do have you use it wisely.
- 26:04They avoid going needlessly into debt.
- 26:07The avoid spending more money than they have and rather than
- 26:11spending wildly purchasing everything that appeals to them
- 26:15buying on credit and then not being able to repay their debts.
- 26:21The family that is self-controlled follows biblical
- 26:25guidelines in regard to making and spending money.
- 26:33They do not love money. No, we all know this.
- 26:37It's not money itself. That's the root of all kinds of
- 26:40evil. It's the love of it in it, but
- 26:42love of money because of what it can produce attitudes and
- 26:48motivations that can produce in US.
- 26:53I don't love money. They don't desire to be rich as
- 26:56Paul talks about in 2 Timothy and First, Timothy 6, verses 9
- 26:59and 10, but they do honest work. They work with their hands.
- 27:04As the scripture says that they might be able to share with
- 27:08those who are in need Ephesians. 4:28, notice the emphasis there,
- 27:14notice the focus there, they work with their hands, not.
- 27:18So that they'll have more to spend on themselves.
- 27:23But so that they'll have to share with others and specially
- 27:27those who are lacking, those who are in need.
- 27:32They give of what they make. they give liberally and
- 27:36generously, and they do it with a cheerful heart with a
- 27:39thankfulness in their hearts, that God has blessed them to the
- 27:42point where they're able to give and it all comes from God.
- 27:49Where it all comes. From the start off with First.
- 27:52First Corinthians 16 verses 1 and 2.
- 27:54Second Corinthians 9 verse 7. All talk about the right
- 27:58attitude. Forgiving And in order to be
- 28:03able to do these things, they control their spending.
- 28:06They avoid buying on impulse. They keep track of their
- 28:10finances. You got to check book.
- 28:13I don't know the people even have checkbooks anymore.
- 28:17We know how those things are changing our way.
- 28:19But however, you spend your money, whether it's a debit
- 28:22card, whether it's a checkbook, whatever it is, you write it
- 28:25down, don't you? Hey, how much do I have left
- 28:28after? I spent that pretty simple, but
- 28:32it's very important. I don't want to be caught
- 28:35unawares. I always want to know where I
- 28:38am. Where my finances are concerned.
- 28:42So they avoid buying on impulse, they control their spending.
- 28:46They keep track of their finances and they plan for the
- 28:50future. Now, since God is the real owner
- 28:56of all that they possess, and that's a concept that we could
- 29:00spend a lot of time talking about, but it's not part of my
- 29:03topic tonight. Everything we have comes from
- 29:06God. You are now our simply stewards
- 29:11and other words, a short term. And in a relative sense, in the
- 29:17grand scheme of things, I short-term, caretaker of the
- 29:21things that God has blessed us with.
- 29:23They don't belong to me. They belong to God.
- 29:26He just put me here to help see after them.
- 29:29You only use I thought upon the language take care of those
- 29:31things. God is the owner of all that we
- 29:33possess we're but stewards of what we have there for that
- 29:38family, that exercises self-control, avoids, wasting,
- 29:42material resources. This family may even recycle
- 29:47materials. Not just because it's good for
- 29:50the environment. But because everything they own.
- 29:55Belongs to God. They resist the temptation to
- 30:01replace the old with the new just because hey that's gone out
- 30:05of fashion. I need to keep up with the time.
- 30:10They're not controlled by the world's views of what is
- 30:14fashionable. But by how they can best you
- 30:19that which God has placed under their control.
- 30:25Self-controlled family makes good use of time.
- 30:29I'm on our resources, time is probably the most valuable.
- 30:39You know, if we lose our money, we may be able to make more
- 30:42money. When our car breaks down.
- 30:47Most likely, it could be replaced or repaired.
- 30:50If worse comes to worse. We can replace it by another
- 30:53one. However, if we lose time,
- 30:57especially if we lose time because we wasted it because
- 31:00we've squandered it needlessly a worthless activities.
- 31:05We can never regain the time that we have lost.
- 31:12Christians who are self controlled the Bible says we are
- 31:16to make the most of our time. Redeem the time Ephesians 5:16
- 31:24make the most of it use, it wisely.
- 31:27To make the most of available time by involved, different
- 31:30things for different people. For some, it may be spending
- 31:36less time playing games. For others, it may be spending
- 31:43less time watching television. For every Christian family, it
- 31:51should include scheduling time to attend every assembly of the
- 31:58church. We should teach our children,
- 32:01the attitude that it's not. Do I have to go?
- 32:06It's be thankful that I have the opportunity to attend Bible
- 32:10study to attend worship. The be with other Christians,
- 32:14the saying, praises to God and learn more from his word just to
- 32:18fellowship and be encouraged. I want another the first person
- 32:21in the door when I came in tonight for the Jason.
- 32:25He gave me a big hug and I gave him one right back.
- 32:27You know, how much good that did me?
- 32:29I can't begin to describe. That's what it's all about.
- 32:35Bella's shipping and learning and growing together.
- 32:41We should make time to read the Bible and pray regularly.
- 32:44Every day is the most preferable.
- 32:48We should make time to do good to others more and more emphasis
- 32:53and congregations as being put on service work, reaching out to
- 32:58others and doing good. Whether it's people that don't
- 33:02have enough to eat, whether it's elderly who can't keep up their
- 33:05places. So what do we do?
- 33:07We can mego paint. We may go clean the yard,
- 33:10whatever we may go cut it, cut it grass, whatever the need may
- 33:14be. We take advantage of
- 33:16opportunities to serve. Because that's what God put us
- 33:20here to do. And that's using our time
- 33:24wisely. And we should also make sure we
- 33:28fulfill family obligation. The home where self-control is
- 33:35manifested, the family members, generally, live by schedule and
- 33:40they use their time wisely. Each family member takes care of
- 33:46his or her body. Think about that.
- 33:51As Christians, our responsibility to look after our
- 33:55own bodies to be as healthy as possible.
- 34:00That stems from the same concept as our responsibility to use the
- 34:05financial and material resources that we have wisely.
- 34:09And what is that? What is that concept?
- 34:13It is that our bodies just like everything else belong to God.
- 34:20Or do you not know that your body is the Temple of the Holy
- 34:23Spirit? Who is in you whom you have from
- 34:26God and you are not your own. You were bought at a price.
- 34:33Therefore, glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which
- 34:38are Gods. First Corinthians 6, verses, 19,
- 34:42and 20. We have a responsibility to be
- 34:48good stewards of that. Which God our God on.
- 34:52Therefore, we have no right to abuse our bodies.
- 34:56In any way, whether it's over eating, whether it's using
- 35:00drugs, getting drunk. Tobacco smoking, whatever.
- 35:05Then had to be smoking, does it but anything that brings harm
- 35:11For our bodies. And furthermore, to the extent
- 35:16that our health depends on us. I know that there are times
- 35:20that, you know, we're all getting older.
- 35:22Our bodies just age. Anyway, don't And we're not as
- 35:27quick and ride. All those good things that we
- 35:31used to be if I ever was. But anyway.
- 35:34But what that just happens to, but as much as it is, if it is
- 35:37within me, I am to take care of my body.
- 35:43I'm to take care of my health. We're obligated to do all that,
- 35:48we can to keep ourselves healthy.
- 35:52Therefore, the Christian who has the characteristic of
- 35:54self-control takes care of his own body.
- 36:02Family members, resist temptation, one of the major
- 36:06reasons that Christians sin is that we simply do not think
- 36:10ahead of time about the consequences of the acts that
- 36:15we're about to come in the actions that were about to take.
- 36:22Perhaps a swear word, slips out of a young man's lips.
- 36:27Even before he knows, it realizes it.
- 36:32A woman may hurt someone by her words without pausing to
- 36:35consider the consequence in The Passion of the moment.
- 36:41Two people may give in to desire and become guilty of sexual
- 36:46immorality. I know from personal experience.
- 36:52Homes have been destroyed lives have been destroyed.
- 36:56People who were Faithful Servants of the Lord their
- 37:00influence destroyed. By one occasion.
- 37:07Where they failed to exercise that self-control.
- 37:11The very concept of self-control suggests that we are always in
- 37:16control of our action, which in turn suggest that we think
- 37:21before. We act, we think, before we
- 37:24speak, we think we consider it before we take part in any
- 37:30activity. Paul indicated that Christians
- 37:34are to control their sexual desire.
- 37:38First Thessalonians, chapter 4, verses three through five for
- 37:41this is, the will of God. You'll read that phrase several
- 37:45times from the pen of the Apostle.
- 37:47Paul. This is God's will.
- 37:51I would think that any time you read that phrase, our ears ought
- 37:55to perk up. What is God about to say, to me,
- 37:59very important? This is the will of God.
- 38:02What are you saying? Paul, your sanctification?
- 38:07What does it mean to be sanctified?
- 38:10Thank to fidus ain't the one who set apart from the world, not
- 38:16because you want to be weird or different or whatever the case
- 38:19may be but because we are different as Christian.
- 38:24We're spiritual will not worldly.
- 38:29Well, that's God's will our sanctification.
- 38:32That is he goes on to elaborate that you abstain abstain.
- 38:38Stay away from Sexual immorality.
- 38:42That each of, you know, how to possess his own vessel his own
- 38:47body that body, in which we dwell that vessel in which we
- 38:52travel through life. That each of you know how to
- 38:56possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor.
- 39:00In other words, the things that you do the choices that you make
- 39:04should honor yourself to start off with.
- 39:07But certainly those choices that you make should honor God.
- 39:15Not in lustful passion like the Gentiles who do not know God.
- 39:25People who act in such ways where they just exhibit a
- 39:28complete lack of self-control. What are they saying?
- 39:34I have no concept of God. I have no concept of how God
- 39:40would have me conduct myself. The God Who created me?
- 39:46Fightin sinner alike. God created us all.
- 39:52In the home, where the spirit dwells family members exercise
- 39:55self-control with the result that they abstain from.
- 40:00Immorality. Now obviously no one, no
- 40:06individual certainly. No home perfectly exercises
- 40:12self-control and all of the ways that we've been discussing.
- 40:17Nevertheless the Christian leads a far more self-controlled life
- 40:23than those in the world. The home that is populated by
- 40:27Christians and the individual Christian Life that bears, the
- 40:32fruit of the spirit exhibits greater self-control than
- 40:37others. There should be an obvious
- 40:40difference. Let's take a few moments and
- 40:45reconsider some rewards of self-control.
- 40:52The life in which the spirit, dwells where the spirit is
- 40:56allowed. As we said before to produce
- 40:59self-control that life again, will definitely be blessed.
- 41:05Self-control brings order out of Chaos.
- 41:09Your bills are paid, you and your family.
- 41:12Will you have enough to live comfortably without the burden
- 41:16of crippling debt? You learn to be satisfied with
- 41:21what you have. Matter of fact, that's biblical
- 41:25is scriptural in and of itself, isn't it?
- 41:27What does the Hebrews writer? Say?
- 41:29Hebrews 13, Verse 5, let your conduct be without covetousness
- 41:34be content. That's if lemay's be satisfied
- 41:39with what you have. The self-control person doesn't
- 41:45think that he has to live up to some artificial standard set by
- 41:49the world. It's time as use wisely.
- 41:53So there is a feeling of Peace, A Feeling a feeling of calm,
- 41:58even in the midst of a hurry up world.
- 42:03Above all God. And his work are at the center
- 42:09of the self-controlled life. Since you refuse to give in to
- 42:15The Temptations of the flesh. Then your influence allows you
- 42:20to do all that you can to advance the cause of Christ
- 42:23because you haven't behaved in ways that damage your influence,
- 42:28even destroy your influence. That individual in whose life
- 42:35the spirit Bears. The fruit of self-control is
- 42:38likely to be a successful individual in whatever.
- 42:42Endeavor, whether it's their career at work, whether it's
- 42:46their family, whether it's in, raising the children, whatever
- 42:50it may be, they're likely to be successful.
- 42:54That home will last the family members in.
- 42:58It will find happiness and fulfillment.
- 43:01And from that home. The Light of Christ will shine
- 43:05out into the world. Now, I want us to draw this to a
- 43:11conclusion. By noticing the source, the true
- 43:16source. Of self-control.
- 43:21I said we're close to coming to the conclusion, but don't leave
- 43:23me. Stay with me.
- 43:27Who, or what? Controls you.
- 43:34They can be a sobering question. Do your passion and lust and
- 43:41desires and your temper, your feelings?
- 43:47Is that what controls you? Does sin.
- 43:50Have you in its grass? Are you controlled by the devil
- 43:55Through The Temptations that he puts in your way?
- 43:59Or do you control yourself? Self control and self denial
- 44:06signal that a person is a Christian that he seeks for his
- 44:11home to be a Christian home and that he wants to influence the
- 44:16society around him for crying. He wants to be the salt and the
- 44:24light that Jesus calls us to be in The Sermon on the Mount.
- 44:29Matthew chapter 5. However, in a sense,
- 44:36self-control is not the primary aim of the individual Christians
- 44:41life. Listen to me, rather Christ
- 44:47control. That's our primary aim is it?
- 44:53Our aim is Christians is to be so controlled, by Christ himself
- 44:59that we can say, with the Apostle, Paul.
- 45:01It is no longer. I who live but Christ lives in
- 45:07me. Rather.
- 45:08Let me tell you that is easier said than done.
- 45:13That's not something that happens in a moment of time.
- 45:18That is something that we grow and develop, and mature into.
- 45:26But we have to be willing to make the effort.
- 45:29The devote the time and who do our part to control ourselves?
- 45:36So that the Holy Spirit can work in your life and help you to
- 45:41grow them a tour, so that it does become not you.
- 45:46But Christ Living in, you Galatians, 2:20.
- 45:54And furthermore, I submit to you that we can never control
- 45:56ourselves, sufficiently to please God.
- 46:01We don't have the strength within ourselves to do it.
- 46:05Only when the spirit himself Bears his fruit in our lives.
- 46:11Will we be able to exercise the kind of self-control that God
- 46:16required? In other words, I come to the
- 46:20realization that Dennis Sanders in his own personal strengths.
- 46:25He can't be successful. But Dennis Sanders giving him
- 46:30himself over to God put his faith and trust in God, spending
- 46:35time with him daily and prayer. Well as shipping, and being
- 46:39together with Brothers and Sisters in Christ, studying
- 46:42regularly from his word. All of those things that you
- 46:44already know are beneficial to you.
- 46:50She'll have to do it. You still have to make the
- 46:53choice day in and day out. But the realization is not me.
- 47:02It's not my strength. God and his strength, that's the
- 47:08only way that will ever be able to make it.
- 47:11The Holy Spirit cannot bear his fruit until we have given
- 47:14ourselves over to Christ. So the question is, do you truly
- 47:22want to become self control? If so, you must first be priced
- 47:30control. He is the real source of our
- 47:35self-control. Christ is the beginning of
- 47:38self-control. Christ is the power to exercise
- 47:42self-control and Christ is the goal to be christ-like is the
- 47:48goal of self-control. So, if you want to win the
- 47:53victory over, self over sin over Satan, then you must submit to
- 48:00Christ. That brings us to the obvious
- 48:04question. Are you a Christian?
- 48:08Have you given your heart your life to Jesus Christ?
- 48:13The Bible makes it very plain how that happens.
- 48:18We must begin by believing in Jesus having faith in him.
- 48:21I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God is the confession
- 48:24in it. But then based on that faith, we
- 48:29want to repent of sin and turn from it.
- 48:31We want to die to sin because we want to live for God.
- 48:36And then we will make the confession with our mouths of
- 48:38what we believe in our hearts. That Jesus Christ is the son of
- 48:41God. And then finally, we submit to
- 48:45Christ and baptism. Were buried with Christ in
- 48:50baptism the blood of Jesus at that point washes away.
- 48:54Our sins would come up out of that water at grave a new
- 48:57person. A person who no longer is living
- 49:01for self, but is living for Christ.
- 49:05And we're on the way becoming self control.
- 49:10Because Christ is in control. You need to obey the gospel.
- 49:17We're ready to help. You already know that we're
- 49:19prepared. Maybe as a Christian who's
- 49:22wandered away from the fold? You have to look within your own
- 49:27heart. You have to answer the question.
- 49:31Where do I stand with God right now?
- 49:37If I, for being honest with yourself, you know that there
- 49:40are things a Miss in your life to the point.
- 49:42Where Sin has separated from you.
- 49:45You from God. Again.
- 49:48Don't leave here tonight. With that yet being the case.
- 49:53Repent of that sin turn from it. Ask God to forgive, you knowing
- 49:57all the while that he will, that's what he wants to do.
- 50:03You're willing to turn and return to him.
- 50:06He'll welcome you like that father welcoming that prodigal.
- 50:10Son, open heart. If you're subject to the
- 50:15invitation, please come right now.
- 50:17As Together, We Stand aside.
