0:09
SPEAKER_02: Welcome to the Whiskey Chasers, where we talk about our passion for whiskey and its history, either amongst ourselves or while interviewing distilleries.
0:17
SPEAKER_02: All while enjoying a glass.
0:19
SPEAKER_02: I'm Steve, I'm Nick, and I'm Chris.
0:22
SPEAKER_02: Please enjoy responsibly while enjoying this week's episode of The Whiskey Chasers.
0:29
SPEAKER_03: So we have a lot of new things happening for this series.
0:33
SPEAKER_03: One, we've got a new guest, part of the club, that has not been on any of the podcast recordings.
0:41
SPEAKER_03: So, Micah, welcome.
0:43
SPEAKER_03: Welcome.
0:44
SPEAKER_01: Thank you for having me.
0:44
SPEAKER_01: I appreciate it.
0:45
SPEAKER_03: And of course, just like everyone else, we have to christen your experience with four bottles.
0:50
SPEAKER_03: So four recordings in one day.
0:52
SPEAKER_07: Looking forward to it.
0:53
SPEAKER_07: Yeah, it's gonna be great.
0:54
SPEAKER_07: Right a passage.
0:55
SPEAKER_07: Right a passage.
0:56
SPEAKER_03: And it's all scotches that we're gonna be doing.
0:59
SPEAKER_03: Some blended, some single malt, some single grain, some finished, some we're just gonna have some fun with it.
1:04
SPEAKER_03: We are, yeah.
1:06
SPEAKER_03: It's November, so we're gonna have a lot of fun.
1:08
SPEAKER_03: Chris is gonna try to figure out how to pair or what to pair with all these.
1:11
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, like I was just saying, it's always so tough pairing pipe tobacco with scotches, I find.
1:16
SPEAKER_06: Because you either kind of like try to one up it like with the smoke, or you try to find something that plays along with it, or contrasting is tough.
1:25
SPEAKER_06: So we're gonna just have fun with it.
1:27
SPEAKER_02: And uh, our first one is monkey shoulder.
1:29
SPEAKER_02: So this one is like the go-to.
1:32
SPEAKER_02: This is what a lot of people say like, I don't really like scotch too much, but I don't mind this one.
1:37
SPEAKER_02: Like, this is a good intro bottle.
1:39
SPEAKER_02: If you look at their website and stuff, they're really talking a lot about mixing and doing stuff with this, so like they're not real picky about drinking it straight.
1:50
SPEAKER_02: I've never had it before, so I'm excited to try it.
1:53
SPEAKER_02: I haven't either.
1:54
SPEAKER_06: So we've never done this on the podcast.
1:55
SPEAKER_06: No, but have we talked about it?
1:57
SPEAKER_06: I'm sure it's been brought up, but not in depth.
2:00
SPEAKER_06: Because this, believe it or not, was my Nick will tell you, this was my gateway bridge introduction, whatever you want to call it, to Scotch.
2:09
SPEAKER_06: Because I was drinking, we were started to drink Scotch a little bit, me and Nick.
2:12
SPEAKER_06: And Nick was drinking some hardcore stuff.
2:15
SPEAKER_06: And I I so here's where I was.
2:17
SPEAKER_06: He poured me some Logavulin 16, and I got maybe like three sips in, and I was I finally was like, you know, I'm just done.
2:25
SPEAKER_06: Like, I'm done with it, and like I gave it up.
2:27
SPEAKER_06: Like I didn't finish it with it, which anybody like that has likes that stuff is like, what?
2:31
SPEAKER_06: Why would you do that?
2:32
SPEAKER_06: Why would you do that?
2:33
SPEAKER_06: Right, such I was to a point where I really, really, and I remember saying this to you, Nick, I was like, I don't like scotch, period.
2:40
SPEAKER_06: Like that's just what it is, and now like I love scotch, like the harder the better.
2:44
SPEAKER_06: So this bottle is what I remember that.
2:47
SPEAKER_06: I found it and we tried it, and I said, Oh, I can I can get in with this, and then next thing you know, it was the gateway.
2:53
SPEAKER_03: It's so funny to me because up until this bottle, I don't know how new or recent it is, but up until this bottle really showing up in the US, Johnny Walker was the start.
3:04
SPEAKER_03: Johnny Walker was your like starter scotch, a blended, isn't it?
3:08
SPEAKER_03: And then this guy came on the market, and every bourbon drinker was like, This is fantastic bourbon.
3:15
SPEAKER_03: This is great bourbon.
3:16
SPEAKER_03: And I was like, That's not a bourbon, it's not a bourbon, buddy.
3:19
SPEAKER_03: And they're they couldn't believe it.
3:20
SPEAKER_03: They're like, What do you mean that's not a bourbon?
3:22
SPEAKER_03: That drinks like a bourbon.
3:23
SPEAKER_01: So it'll be interesting to see because you're Micah, you're not a big Scotch guy, not a Scotch guy, it's got some smoke, but you'll be surprised, yeah.
3:31
SPEAKER_01: But I'm I'm excited to be pleasantly surprised, right?
3:34
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, see if it's see if it's good or not, or unpleasantly depending on how it goes seeing it.
3:39
SPEAKER_01: Right.
3:40
SPEAKER_06: So to pair with it, what I'm thinking I'm gonna do is something different.
3:45
SPEAKER_06: I'm just gonna do, and I'm not sure how it's gonna go because I've never tried this tobacco.
3:49
SPEAKER_06: It's one that's been sitting on the shelf, like a lot of these have.
3:52
SPEAKER_06: Uh, this one's only got five years of age on it.
3:55
SPEAKER_06: So still a good amount of age.
3:57
SPEAKER_06: But it's cross-eyed cricket by Cornell and Deal.
4:00
SPEAKER_06: I picked this one up without knowing if I would if I'd ever like it or not.
4:04
SPEAKER_06: But the description is it's got a base of unsweetened black Cavendish, which is interesting, unsweetened black Cavendish.
4:10
SPEAKER_06: And then it's got Turkish, Latiquia, and Parique.
4:13
SPEAKER_06: So it's kind of like a hybrid English, with you know, like with the Cavendish, but then it says it's enclosed in a light rum punch flavor.
4:22
SPEAKER_06: English, aromatic, question mark, you take your pick.
4:25
SPEAKER_06: So it's kind of like that English crossover.
4:28
SPEAKER_06: So we're gonna give it a try and see.
4:29
SPEAKER_06: See how it goes.
4:30
SPEAKER_06: I have no idea how it's gonna go, but I know that some people really, really like this, but I've never had it.
4:34
SPEAKER_06: Nice.
4:35
SPEAKER_06: You said it's called cross-eyed cricket, cross-eyed cricket, and you know, we were talking about the labels that one time.
4:40
SPEAKER_06: Look at the label on that one, isn't that cool?
4:42
SPEAKER_06: It's got like a like a farmer cricket, and he's like smoking a pipe, and he's clearly like cross-eyed.
4:48
SPEAKER_06: Like, like maybe he's maybe a little too they kept they kept it in the family.
4:53
SPEAKER_06: For sure.
4:53
SPEAKER_06: You know what I mean?
4:54
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, maybe a little too much.
4:55
SPEAKER_06: So yeah, we'll give it a try.
4:57
SPEAKER_06: It's still five years of age.
4:59
SPEAKER_02: And Micah, you're not you're you you do smoke pipes on occasion, yeah.
5:02
SPEAKER_02: But not very often.
5:04
SPEAKER_02: Lately, what we've been trying is Chris over here has bought more than he can smoke, so they've been just sitting there and he sellers them, so they're unopened.
5:14
SPEAKER_02: And so that was you just get better with age.
5:16
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and so five years it's been sitting on a shelf.
5:19
SPEAKER_01: Oh, meaning at like at your house?
5:20
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, at your house.
5:21
SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
5:22
SPEAKER_01: I thought it had been aged and you bought it.
5:23
SPEAKER_01: No, no.
5:25
SPEAKER_01: I bought it five years ago.
5:26
SPEAKER_06: Yep, I guess.
5:27
SPEAKER_06: And aged it myself.
5:28
SPEAKER_06: We've had a lot on the podcast that have been even seven or eight, seven, eight, nine, ten years old.
5:33
SPEAKER_06: Just depends.
5:34
SPEAKER_06: But that's part of the tobacco thing, is when you buy something and you wait, because unlike whiskey and stuff, it actually does age in the tin.
5:42
SPEAKER_06: Oh the same way that whiskey ages in a barrel.
5:45
SPEAKER_01: I didn't I didn't know that.
5:46
SPEAKER_01: That's awesome.
5:47
SPEAKER_03: I'm the nose guy, apparently, for pipe tobacco because I I love the smell.
5:51
SPEAKER_03: I can't do the smoke.
5:53
SPEAKER_03: But this guy, I'm excited to see what it smells like once you guys start smoking it because this reminds me of a barbecue.
5:59
SPEAKER_03: This is like like my smoker at home kind of smell.
6:02
SPEAKER_03: And I like a good mesquite wood almost or like hickory.
6:05
SPEAKER_03: But it's sweet.
6:06
SPEAKER_03: Yes, there's there's a sweetness to it, and then it's like that's thrown me off a bit of like what kind of wood would it be?
6:11
SPEAKER_03: But it reminds me of that like hickory, that stronger hickory or mesquite wood, but with some sweetness added into it.
6:17
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I have no idea.
6:18
SPEAKER_05: We'll have to wait and see.
6:19
SPEAKER_03: Uh, speaking of which have you guys ever heard of pecan wood being used for smoking?
6:23
SPEAKER_03: Pecan wood?
6:24
SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
6:25
SPEAKER_05: Pecan or pecan.
6:27
SPEAKER_05: It's pecan.
6:28
SPEAKER_05: Pecan wood, yeah.
6:29
SPEAKER_05: I'm on the pecan.
6:29
SPEAKER_06: Okay, my pecan.
6:31
SPEAKER_06: Clearly, we have we have a few different versions.
6:34
SPEAKER_03: We're talking November, so we are.
6:35
SPEAKER_03: I mean, we're dealing in the month of pecan or pecan.
6:38
SPEAKER_03: Which one which one are you?
6:40
SPEAKER_03: Well, wait, what did you say?
6:41
SPEAKER_01: Pecan.
6:42
SPEAKER_01: That's what I said.
6:42
SPEAKER_01: So well, maybe it's an Indiana thing.
6:45
SPEAKER_01: Northern Indiana.
6:48
SPEAKER_06: Or pecan.
6:49
SPEAKER_06: Pecan pie.
6:51
SPEAKER_06: Pecan.
6:51
SPEAKER_06: Well, pecan it is yeah, pecan.
6:54
SPEAKER_06: And then there's pecan, which is what Steve said.
6:57
SPEAKER_06: That's what I say.
6:58
SPEAKER_06: I say pecan pie.
6:59
SPEAKER_06: It's like the same.
7:00
SPEAKER_06: The same people that say pecan say Italian.
7:03
SPEAKER_06: Italian.
7:04
SPEAKER_06: I do say Italian.
7:07
SPEAKER_02: There you go.
7:08
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
7:09
SPEAKER_02: There you go.
7:10
SPEAKER_02: There we go.
7:10
SPEAKER_02: Makes way more sense now.
7:12
SPEAKER_02: I say Italian sometimes, but usually, usually it's Italian.
7:15
SPEAKER_02: It's either Italian or Italian.
7:18
SPEAKER_02: Italian.
7:18
SPEAKER_02: That's the Olive Garden Italian.
7:19
SPEAKER_02: Italian.
7:20
SPEAKER_06: Here, I'm gonna throw it.
7:21
SPEAKER_06: What's the I what's the Olive Garden?
7:23
SPEAKER_06: Oh, nice kid.
7:26
SPEAKER_07: I didn't expect to hit the top of the microphone.
7:29
SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
7:29
SPEAKER_07: Or you just it stunk and then oh right in the eye.
7:32
SPEAKER_06: First time we've done that though, since we started throwing the tins.
7:35
SPEAKER_03: But yeah, so I I have found pecan, pecan, however you want to say it, wood to smoke with that I've never used before.
7:43
SPEAKER_03: Did it yesterday for the first time?
7:45
SPEAKER_03: Fantastic.
7:46
SPEAKER_03: You liked it, huh?
7:47
SPEAKER_03: What'd you smoke?
7:48
SPEAKER_03: So I did a pork butt.
7:49
SPEAKER_03: Uh so I smoked a pork butt, and then while that was smoking, decided, hey, I was gonna throw some brats and chicken on for lunch.
7:55
SPEAKER_03: So genius.
7:56
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I was fantastic.
7:58
SPEAKER_03: I was gonna say just let it sit there and it was awesome.
8:02
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but the it's like a lighter smoke.
8:05
SPEAKER_03: Like uh, it is probably Mary's favorite so far because the smoker I did it on was the big intense one, which she doesn't love, but now we found a little bit more tamer wood for her to somewhat more enjoy it.
8:21
SPEAKER_03: I think it would go great for like turkey, like a Thanksgiving turkey with with that wood.
8:25
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it would be fantastic.
8:26
SPEAKER_03: That and cherry.
8:28
SPEAKER_03: Are you gonna do that this year for your turkey?
8:30
SPEAKER_03: So each year for the club so far, we've done turkey or last two years, maybe two, three.
8:35
SPEAKER_03: We've done turkey and they've been smoked turkeys.
8:37
SPEAKER_03: Okay.
8:37
SPEAKER_03: So this year we did a mix of applewood and cherry wood, and that was fantastic.
8:42
SPEAKER_03: And then for our family, Chris and I's family Thanksgiving, I did straight cherry wood, and it was wonderful.
8:49
SPEAKER_03: The cherry wood is definitely like gives off a red hue to the point where some thought it was burnt on the outside and it wasn't burnt, it was just really red, it was a dark amber red.
8:59
SPEAKER_03: It was, wasn't it?
9:00
SPEAKER_06: But it was tasty, it was real good.
9:01
SPEAKER_06: Gosh, was that that was almost a year ago?
9:03
SPEAKER_06: It wasn't, yeah.
9:04
SPEAKER_06: Dude, was it last year that we had that turkey at Ryan's?
9:06
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that yeah, we do that.
9:08
SPEAKER_03: That was really good.
9:08
SPEAKER_01: So that was apple and cherry wood, yeah, a blend of that.
9:11
SPEAKER_01: Oh, that okay.
9:12
SPEAKER_01: I was trying to remember because I keep I think of it at your house, but then uh you mentioned Ryan.
9:16
SPEAKER_01: I'm like, oh my goodness, yeah, that was an amazing.
9:19
SPEAKER_03: It's funny because the guy, so every guy in the club kind of picks their month.
9:24
SPEAKER_03: It they they kind of have one month they pick.
9:26
SPEAKER_03: Chris is always October, no matter what the bottle is, he's like, I'll take October.
9:29
SPEAKER_03: Ryan normally always lands on November for Thanksgiving.
9:33
SPEAKER_03: Like, I don't know why, but it seems to land on his his like choosing is November.
9:38
SPEAKER_03: Well, is that with him being a school teacher?
9:40
SPEAKER_03: I wonder if he has that that week along.
9:43
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because that was probably pretty close to Thanksgiving itself.
9:46
SPEAKER_01: So I feel like mine is always summer.
9:48
SPEAKER_01: We're out on the deck, yeah, like playing people are playing cards or hanging out.
9:52
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, well, you got a nice deck, you do, it's a big deck.
9:56
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's that's what she said.
10:02
SPEAKER_07: It's it's a little old, but you know, it gets the job done.
10:05
SPEAKER_06: A little old, a little creaky, but still hard enough to to to you know support the things it needs to.
10:13
SPEAKER_03: But Steve, how long has this company been around?
10:15
SPEAKER_03: Sorry, going back to Monkey Shoulder.
10:16
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, jumping right back.
10:18
SPEAKER_02: 2003 is when Monkey Shoulder came out.
10:21
SPEAKER_02: 2003?
10:22
SPEAKER_02: 2003, but it's owned by William Grant, William Grant and Co., uh, who owns like everything, or a whole bunch of scotches and stuff.
10:32
SPEAKER_03: Why does that name sound so familiar?
10:34
SPEAKER_03: It's not Jenna Walker doesn't own William Grant or not owned by William Grant.
10:37
SPEAKER_02: They are not, uh, but a lot of other things are.
10:40
SPEAKER_02: Uh, they're the third largest producer of Scotch, so they do they they have a lot.
10:45
SPEAKER_02: Uh uh, they own Hendrix Gin.
10:48
SPEAKER_02: So that's a weird one.
10:50
SPEAKER_02: Telemore, which they bought in 2010 for like 171 million euro.
10:55
SPEAKER_02: Sorry, Tillamore Dew?
10:56
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you have to follow the Euro.
10:58
SPEAKER_02: Tillemore Dew was bought for that much.
11:00
SPEAKER_02: They bought it with some other stuff, but they sold everything else.
11:03
SPEAKER_02: And so in the end, it ended up being like 171 million for just Telemardew.
11:07
SPEAKER_02: Chris, do you hear Telemordo and think that popular with North?
11:11
SPEAKER_06: Like the three swallows and whatnot in that Telemordo?
11:14
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's your own thing.
11:15
SPEAKER_02: It used to be, I thought it was it's an Irish, but um, yeah, very basic.
11:21
SPEAKER_02: Like they came out with jugs, yeah.
11:22
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they have the cool, they have the cool handled jugs.
11:25
SPEAKER_02: The crocs.
11:26
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the crocs.
11:27
SPEAKER_06: Um, I feel like they probably do more than what you're thinking.
11:29
SPEAKER_06: Maybe.
11:30
SPEAKER_06: But also Euro is not dollar.
11:33
SPEAKER_06: But it's more expensive, but it's pretty, it's it's relatively similar though.
11:37
SPEAKER_02: That is a lot of money, yeah.
11:38
SPEAKER_02: Um, it's probably like 150 million or something uh instead of 171 million.
11:43
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, still a lot.
11:45
SPEAKER_02: It's still a lot, yeah.
11:46
SPEAKER_02: More than I'll ever have.
11:47
SPEAKER_02: I didn't think it was that much.
11:48
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
11:48
SPEAKER_02: Uh they also own Drambue and uh Famous Grouse and Naked Malt.
11:54
SPEAKER_02: They bought those, they just bought those ones in 2025, just like in July, just a few months, just just like you know, four or five months ago.
12:02
SPEAKER_03: Fascinating.
12:02
SPEAKER_03: I wonder if uh famous grouse is changing the the rumor with famous grouse has always been that they pull the remaining leftovers from Johnny Walker.
12:11
SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay, and so it's a really cheap bottle, scotch bottle, for the quality you get.
12:16
SPEAKER_03: That was always the rumor, but if they bought them out, yeah.
12:19
SPEAKER_03: I wonder we never verified that, but that's what we thought.
12:22
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they do have a bourbon now, so they do have an American bourbon, and it's fistful of bourbon.
12:29
SPEAKER_02: So Mike, you've never had it?
12:31
SPEAKER_01: No, you don't ever need it.
12:33
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
12:34
SPEAKER_01: So wait, so this is a bourbon that they do in Scotland.
12:38
SPEAKER_02: No, the company that owns it just happens there, it's a it's a Scottish company, got it, but they have now bought a bourbon, an American bourbon.
12:46
SPEAKER_03: You know what?
12:46
SPEAKER_02: That kind of makes well they bought it.
12:48
SPEAKER_02: They didn't start it.
12:49
SPEAKER_02: No, they didn't start it.
12:50
SPEAKER_02: No, I take that back.
12:51
SPEAKER_02: I think they did start it.
12:52
SPEAKER_03: Okay, yeah, it makes sense why it's so terrible then.
12:54
SPEAKER_06: But you know, there's plenty of people that buy that, the under the unwitting here.
12:58
SPEAKER_06: And here's the thing: what's funny is the same people that are really going to town for Tillamore Doo are the same ones that are that are buying um Fistful of Burton.
13:07
SPEAKER_06: I mean, it's very gimmicky, it's very marketing.
13:09
SPEAKER_06: It's very and Tillemordu does great.
13:11
SPEAKER_06: I would like to see their sales just in the month of March, probably astronomical.
13:16
SPEAKER_03: Because they're the ones that really go after like the do and the brew, like partnering.
13:20
SPEAKER_06: All the St.
13:21
SPEAKER_06: Patrick's Day stuff, right?
13:22
SPEAKER_06: Because it, I mean, sure, it's Jamesons and stuff, but I think even Tillamore Doo might overdo the Jamesons because they push it so hard.
13:29
SPEAKER_02: They do push it good.
13:30
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
13:31
SPEAKER_02: William Grant, though, uh, their company started in 1887.
13:35
SPEAKER_02: So they've been around for a while.
13:37
SPEAKER_02: Because Scotch, of course, it started that far back.
13:39
SPEAKER_02: But Grant, and I I heard the name, and it's it's a Scottish name, so like it's a pretty popular one.
13:46
SPEAKER_02: But if you watch Outlander at all, uh, or have read the books of Outlander.
13:51
SPEAKER_02: I've seen it.
13:51
SPEAKER_02: I've never isn't that a romance thing.
13:53
SPEAKER_02: It is a little bit, but it's a pretty good one.
13:55
SPEAKER_02: Like it's a there's a good action, there's good stuff.
13:58
SPEAKER_02: I've seen Ender.
13:59
SPEAKER_00: I have not seen any correct, but not I watch it with my wife.
14:04
SPEAKER_02: Let me correct.
14:05
SPEAKER_02: I've never seen Outlander.
14:07
SPEAKER_02: I am reading the books and I like them.
14:10
SPEAKER_02: They are romancy.
14:11
SPEAKER_06: Which one would be more which one should you be more embarrassed about, though?
14:15
SPEAKER_06: Watching or reading?
14:16
SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
14:18
SPEAKER_06: I would say watching.
14:20
SPEAKER_02: Is that coming from someone that watches?
14:21
SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh.
14:23
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
14:24
SPEAKER_02: So I'm not gonna get into why.
14:26
SPEAKER_02: But the first, but the first season of Outlander, probably watching.
14:31
SPEAKER_02: Later on, it changed.
14:32
SPEAKER_01: It was the first season of Outlander, yeah.
14:35
SPEAKER_01: That in one particular episode that I was like, okay, I can't watch this anymore.
14:40
SPEAKER_01: And we stopped for a couple of years.
14:42
SPEAKER_02: It's relatively sexual, not even just relatively, it is overt.
14:48
SPEAKER_02: The first season in particular has a lot of crazy stuff going on.
14:51
SPEAKER_06: Game of Thrones where it's like mostly dudes.
14:53
SPEAKER_02: No.
14:54
SPEAKER_02: Well, there is there is a line of of the storyline of with some some homosexuality.
15:01
SPEAKER_02: So there is some of that, but it's also a little bit rapey.
15:04
SPEAKER_02: So not even a little bit, it gets weird.
15:08
SPEAKER_02: But that character dies after the first after the first time he gets his come up and after he gets after that no longer that part of it goes away.
15:18
SPEAKER_01: One of our friends who watched this before us had recommended it.
15:22
SPEAKER_01: After I was like, I'm not watching this anymore.
15:25
SPEAKER_01: She said, if you just push past that episode, then it actually you know continues to get better and better.
15:31
SPEAKER_01: And I was like, real very doubtful, but it does.
15:34
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
15:35
SPEAKER_02: So I'm reading the books and I'm on like the fourth book out of like 10 or something, and now they're in the US, so now they've they've transferred over and stuff, and so yeah, it's a good series, book-wise, TV show-wise.
15:47
SPEAKER_02: Don't don't know, but I would like to watch it, just haven't yet.
15:51
SPEAKER_02: But anyway, it all starts with about Battle of Caludin, which is during the Jacobite Rebellion.
15:57
SPEAKER_02: So in Scotland in the 1760s or so, Bonnie Prince Stuart is like a former Stuart family, used to be the monarch, and now he's trying to become the monarch again.
16:10
SPEAKER_02: So he's trying to overthrow the English monarchy and take over.
16:14
SPEAKER_02: So and he got the Scots behind him.
16:16
SPEAKER_02: To do that, he lost.
16:18
SPEAKER_02: It was a it was it all ended with the battle of Cayuden.
16:22
SPEAKER_02: And the founder of this, he was in that battle and survived, fighting for as a Jacobite, as the losing side, but he was able to escape and and all that kind of stuff.
16:32
SPEAKER_02: So, yes, he was in the Jacobite Rebellion and then started making Scotch.
16:38
SPEAKER_03: So yeah, he had a journal of the sorrow.
16:41
SPEAKER_03: So that was pretty cool.
16:44
SPEAKER_02: But yeah, and so now they're the third largest producer of Scotch.
16:47
SPEAKER_02: They also the big names that they started with is Glen Fitdock, Glen Fitdock, and then Belvini.
16:53
SPEAKER_02: Those are the top two, those are what they started, and then since then they've added on a whole bunch more.
16:59
SPEAKER_03: Maybe that's why we're gonna still own those.
17:01
SPEAKER_02: They still own those, that's still their main flagship.
17:03
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Belvini's some good stuff.
17:05
SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
17:06
SPEAKER_02: This bottle though, Monkey Shoulder, came out in 2003, and they came out and they started talking about something called a blended malt whiskey.
17:16
SPEAKER_02: A blended malt whiskey is what they call themselves, and that's what's on the label there.
17:20
SPEAKER_02: The difference though, a blended scotch, not including the word malt, can include just neutral grain spirits.
17:28
SPEAKER_02: A blended malt scotch cannot.
17:31
SPEAKER_02: So this came out and they were kind of a middle ground between like a cheap blended scotch and a single malt.
17:40
SPEAKER_02: So they kind of came out saying, We're uh we're better than that.
17:44
SPEAKER_02: We're we don't have any of the natural grain spirits, and they separated out this separate section of blended malt scotch, and that does not include the neutral grain spirit.
17:55
SPEAKER_06: So at least can't a blended scotch can contain neutral grain spirit in the way it doesn't have to, but has the it has the ability to in the same way that like a whiskey, not a bourbon, can well how about them apples?
18:13
SPEAKER_06: I didn't know that.
18:14
SPEAKER_06: That's some BS right there, right?
18:16
SPEAKER_05: So but how many how many companies actually do that?
18:19
SPEAKER_06: Well, I don't know, but the fact that it could happen they separated out, and are they do they put that on the bottle?
18:25
SPEAKER_06: Because like, right, you know, yeah, what is is it is it JTS Brown that's technically the AD proof?
18:31
SPEAKER_06: Is it technically a neutral grain that has some neutral grain out of no?
18:34
SPEAKER_06: Which one is it?
18:34
SPEAKER_06: I'm thinking of there's one of those.
18:36
SPEAKER_06: No, no, no.
18:37
SPEAKER_06: No, you'd be surprised.
18:38
SPEAKER_06: It's it's not J.
18:39
SPEAKER_06: I don't think it's JTS Brown, but there's one of them that's actually pretty good.
18:43
SPEAKER_06: Okay, well, for lack of another one, uh, Kentucky Tavern is one of those, okay, where it is technically has some neutral grain spirits in it, along with coloring and and whatever else to make it look like a foolproof whiskey, right?
18:56
SPEAKER_06: And it's not and deceiving.
18:59
SPEAKER_06: But so a blended malt scotch is still not a single malt, but that one would be all whiskey.
19:06
SPEAKER_06: That one is all whiskey, did not include.
19:08
SPEAKER_06: So that is actually something to kind of that's something to watch out for, maybe watch out for.
19:12
SPEAKER_02: And I'd be curious if like Johnny Walker says on their blended malt, blended malt, or if it just says blended scotch.
19:20
SPEAKER_02: Um, not saying they do or don't, but that's the most well-known blended scotch.
19:24
SPEAKER_06: Well, and I could see famous grouse is so dang cheap.
19:26
SPEAKER_06: I could almost see them like their lower offerings potentially having some some neutral grain.
19:30
SPEAKER_06: Neutral grain.
19:31
SPEAKER_03: And I don't think that they would have blended malt or JMB all nervous.
19:34
SPEAKER_06: You see what I'm saying?
19:35
SPEAKER_06: And JMB is good, it's not bad, it's not great, but I could see that maybe having I never would have thought that, but that kind of makes sense now.
19:43
SPEAKER_03: It makes sense why it'd be so cheap, too.
19:45
SPEAKER_03: Because it's you're not using as much scotch, like much whiskey in it.
19:51
SPEAKER_06: It's counterfeit.
19:52
SPEAKER_06: When you use neutral grain spirits, you're counterfeiting.
19:54
SPEAKER_06: It's really what you're doing.
19:55
SPEAKER_06: So you're saying that monkey shoulder does not include, yes.
19:59
SPEAKER_06: Okay, well, that's fantastic.
20:01
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they came out with this, and and that was, and they're one of the first ones to do that.
20:05
SPEAKER_06: They couldn't kind of create that separation, which is good for something that's this cheap.
20:10
SPEAKER_03: I mean, you don't you don't usually get something this cheap for this, this, this good, which would make sense why they would do that then, why they would try to separate themselves to say we're we're inexpensive, but we're not cheap, cheap.
20:20
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, because you might have people try this and say it's good, it's cheap, must be neutral grain, must be, you know what I mean.
20:27
SPEAKER_03: Go ahead and have some.
20:29
SPEAKER_06: Has he been waiting?
20:30
SPEAKER_06: Have you been waiting?
20:30
SPEAKER_06: Mikey, you just gotta drink it.
20:32
SPEAKER_06: Drink it.
20:33
SPEAKER_01: No, I was waiting.
20:34
SPEAKER_02: If you want more, you we pour more.
20:35
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we yeah, we'll we'll gladly pour more.
20:37
SPEAKER_01: Again, not a scotch guy.
20:39
SPEAKER_01: So I probably won't.
20:42
SPEAKER_01: We'll surprise you today.
20:43
SPEAKER_06: The more you drink, the more you might like it.
20:46
SPEAKER_04: That is very true.
20:47
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we got we got four of these today.
20:49
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
20:49
SPEAKER_06: It's true.
20:50
SPEAKER_06: Maybe five.
20:51
SPEAKER_02: Maybe just keep on going.
20:54
SPEAKER_02: So this is my first time having monkey shoulder, and I think it's pretty good.
20:57
SPEAKER_02: Like in terms of uh, you know, I could see how it would be good for like mixing or whatever, because I could see how maybe it could use use some extra, use something else with it.
21:08
SPEAKER_02: And I also see why people might think it's a bourbon, because it's kind of caramely or you know sweet.
21:13
SPEAKER_02: It's sweet, yeah.
21:14
SPEAKER_02: For a scotch, yeah.
21:16
SPEAKER_02: For non-finished scotch, right?
21:18
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, no smoke or anything like that.
21:19
SPEAKER_02: No smoke, no pe that not that kind of stuff is not really there.
21:22
SPEAKER_02: It's the it's a spaceide, so it's from the spaceside region.
21:26
SPEAKER_06: So it's is that fruity kind of it's got little wisps of the smoke, like it's got enough to be like that's campfire-esque, like enough to be like that's a scotch, I think if you know what you're doing, but I was gonna say if you're a Scotch drinker, this is one you pick up and be like, Yes, this is a Scotch.
21:45
SPEAKER_06: Does that make sense?
21:46
SPEAKER_06: Instead of like the smoky wood, it's just wood for a lot of people.
21:51
SPEAKER_06: But I mean, it's you gotta think about somebody who's really not a scotch guy that may want to dip his toes.
21:59
SPEAKER_06: This is Of that pool that you want to dip your toes into, because for me, this was something I could again, it wasn't my favorite but it was like a scotch that I could drink, right?
22:08
SPEAKER_06: Because I think that there's part of people that want to be able to drink a scotch too, that just can't stand it, you know what I mean.
22:14
SPEAKER_03: I was gonna say, is this one it was like bearable, like you had to force yourself?
22:18
SPEAKER_06: No, okay, no, log of one I was forcing myself, right?
22:21
SPEAKER_06: But I I remember saying, like, at one point, like, I just like there's times where you need to drink a scotch as a man, you know what I mean?
22:28
SPEAKER_06: And if you don't like it, you don't like it, you're kind of stuck, you know what I mean?
22:32
SPEAKER_06: But this is one that maybe you could I don't want to say muster through, but you could be like you could pass it, right?
22:40
SPEAKER_06: And then the more and more you drink it, maybe the more you like it, and then you start branching off, you know what I mean?
22:45
SPEAKER_06: Like if I said we had to drink scotch, Micah, and you're not a scotch guy, but we have to drink scotch tonight, would you want this or would you want something that else you've tried?
22:54
SPEAKER_06: You know what I mean?
22:54
SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
22:55
SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, so so I took a sip uh too, actually.
22:59
SPEAKER_01: And my first thought was if I had not known this was a scotch, I would have assumed it was a whiskey.
23:06
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't think I would have assumed that it was a bourbon, though, which was strange.
23:10
SPEAKER_01: And then like the the the long finish at the end definitely was fruity, which that was strange to me.
23:16
SPEAKER_01: I see this stuff on the on the shelf at the grocery store every like all the time.
23:20
SPEAKER_01: It's just always there or whatever.
23:21
SPEAKER_01: I've never thought to to pick it up.
23:24
SPEAKER_01: I always actually thought it was a bourbon.
23:27
SPEAKER_01: So there you go.
23:29
SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I mean, yeah, this would this is a this would this could I could see how people again, like you said, Steve, mix it, but this this is like one of those everyday drinkers for you know somebody who's into scotch.
23:41
SPEAKER_02: So you are not into scotch, but what is your thoughts on it?
23:44
SPEAKER_02: Do you do you is it okay?
23:46
SPEAKER_02: Is it not okay?
23:47
SPEAKER_01: So I don't know that I would uh what's the price point?
23:49
SPEAKER_01: Do we 30 bucks?
23:50
SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
23:51
SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, maybe maybe I pick it up and and it would be like you know, kind of one of those drinkers I feel like uh Friday night in the fall or whatever you're sitting out on the big deck and it's taking sips straight.
24:06
SPEAKER_01: I would I would I would do or sorry, neat.
24:09
SPEAKER_01: Neat, yeah.
24:10
SPEAKER_06: Um, and you said deck and then you had to say straight.
24:15
SPEAKER_06: But I I think for uh for Scotch that you could drink neat for$30.
24:21
SPEAKER_06: I mean, there's a lot worse you could do, you know what I mean?
24:24
SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
24:24
SPEAKER_03: And it's also great.
24:26
SPEAKER_03: This is one of those.
24:27
SPEAKER_03: If you're a Scotch drinker, so for me, I was a big log villain guy.
24:31
SPEAKER_03: That was the thing I tried to get Chris into right away, and that did not go well.
24:35
SPEAKER_03: But if I saw this on a shelf of like, hey, this is my scotch, I'm not gonna be offended.
24:40
SPEAKER_03: I'd be like, Yep, go ahead and pour that for me.
24:43
SPEAKER_03: Like, I'm a Scotch drinker, I know what it is, and it's good for what it is, it's good, and I'm not gonna be offended if you pour that for me.
24:50
SPEAKER_03: You know what I mean?
24:51
SPEAKER_01: So here's a weird question how long ago was it that you introduced logable in to Chris?
24:57
SPEAKER_03: Oh, before the club.
24:58
SPEAKER_03: Uh yeah, even this would have been 16, maybe 2015, 2016, 15, 16.
25:03
SPEAKER_06: Okay, so it's been nine.
25:05
SPEAKER_06: We were into Wardy Bourbon, I was a big bourbon guy.
25:07
SPEAKER_06: What's funny is I was the bourbon guy and Nick was not.
25:10
SPEAKER_06: And Nick was a scotch guy and I was not.
25:12
SPEAKER_06: And I kind of pulled Nick into the bourbon and then he pulled me into the scotch.
25:16
SPEAKER_06: So we kind of have similar stories with that, just vice versa.
25:19
SPEAKER_03: Which is hilarious because so in college, my roommates liked whiskey, like that was their whiskey and beer.
25:26
SPEAKER_03: And I didn't prefer whiskey and didn't prefer beer.
25:29
SPEAKER_03: I was smearing off ice, was my my and vodka was my that's college, right?
25:35
SPEAKER_03: Which is weird.
25:35
SPEAKER_03: But I would say Bacardi green apple was my go-to in college.
25:39
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
25:40
SPEAKER_03: And when we got out of high school or out of high school, out of college, it was like, okay, let me, I kind of want to grow into whiskey, but I didn't I didn't really like the bourbon.
25:49
SPEAKER_03: Like I didn't like it was flavored stuff.
25:50
SPEAKER_03: So it was uh red stag, their chip black cherry, which was foolproof at the time.
25:54
SPEAKER_03: And I was like, I don't, I don't like that flavored sweet stuff.
25:57
SPEAKER_03: And so I saw Johnny Walker and I was like, I I kind of want to try and get into Johnny Walker, it's more manly, more earthy, more country, like campfire kind of feel.
26:08
SPEAKER_03: And then that went into single malt scott, like that really dove into like how smoky, how earthy, how peedy can I get, and still love it.
26:19
SPEAKER_03: And I don't know that I've found one yet that is a turnoff.
26:22
SPEAKER_03: And we and we've gone some hardcore ones.
26:24
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we've gone with some really hardcore ones.
26:26
SPEAKER_03: So you and Ryan have a lot to talk about, too.
26:28
unknown: Yeah, yeah.
26:29
SPEAKER_06: All right, okay.
26:30
SPEAKER_06: He's in pursuit of the craziest thing as well.
26:33
SPEAKER_06: But what's funny is it doesn't take long once that ball starts kind of rolling, it really doesn't take long for you to kind of get to that point where you're chasing after like the strongest.
26:44
SPEAKER_06: Because like I said, I hated it, and I went from this to Johnny Walker, black, double, then double black, and then and then it was like the next thing you know, then the next thing you know, and then now I'm like I'm chasing it as well.
26:57
SPEAKER_06: Like we've tried Cragabus, and we've tried the the craziest ones we can talk to more, like the craziest ones you can, and it's like it's never enough, you know what I mean?
27:05
SPEAKER_06: The pursuit of like the staunchiest scotch out there, you know?
27:09
SPEAKER_03: So the most likely staunchy, yeah.
27:11
SPEAKER_01: Yes, yeah.
27:13
SPEAKER_01: One one thing that can pops into mind is so had somebody brought you like the best scotch, and that was your first scotch, do you think that would have made it so you like instantly liked scotch, or is it something that is more acquired?
27:31
SPEAKER_06: Well, I mean, I mean, just to go back to what we were saying, and so Nick poured me the 16-year logoviline, which anybody that knows Scotch knows that that's like one of the best bottles.
27:40
SPEAKER_06: And it's not cheap.
27:41
SPEAKER_06: Like it's it's it's pretty expensive, it's famed, it's legendary, it's uh it's gifted to people at graduations, it's gifted to people at retirements.
27:51
SPEAKER_06: Like this is a bottle that like you know, it's it's even more flavorful, but people would yeah, I would put it up there with Johnny Walker Blue, which is a very expensive bottle, also given at retirements and whatnot.
28:04
SPEAKER_06: But it's up there.
28:05
SPEAKER_06: So like basically he was giving me like one of the best scotches you could get, and I hated it.
28:11
SPEAKER_06: Like that was that's what was funny.
28:12
SPEAKER_06: Like when I was like, I think I like poured it in your glass, I was like, I can't drink this.
28:16
SPEAKER_06: I mean, can you imagine like the equivalent would probably be kind of like pouring E.H.
28:22
SPEAKER_06: Taylor?
28:23
SPEAKER_06: Like a good, a good E.H.
28:24
SPEAKER_06: Taylor in somebody else's glass going, nah, not for me.
28:28
SPEAKER_06: Like, you know what I mean?
28:29
SPEAKER_06: Like, like, yeah.
28:30
SPEAKER_06: And even like people that aren't super into bourbon yet know enough about bourbon to be like, well, you kind of bear through that, you know what I mean?
28:37
SPEAKER_06: You don't you don't pour that down the drain.
28:39
SPEAKER_06: You know, yeah, and I did it basically.
28:41
SPEAKER_06: I was like the equivalent of me pouring down E.H.
28:43
SPEAKER_06: Taylor down there because it was too too hot, you know what I mean, or whatever, because EH Taylor is kind of bread, you know, it's got some breadth.
28:51
SPEAKER_06: I would you think that that's a pretty good, like like a volleyball in 16 to like a like a good E.H.
28:56
SPEAKER_06: Taylor, like a good bottle, probably pretty similar.
28:59
SPEAKER_03: Uh so it's interesting but thinking about it now, because Chris and I, we are the the our go-to scotches, like our favorite scotches, have always had a history of being against each other.
29:13
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and those that like Logovin don't understand those that like Lafroy, and there's some kind of rival between the two.
29:20
SPEAKER_03: So I wonder if had I given you LeFroig to begin with, would you be on my side of Logavin now?
29:25
SPEAKER_06: I don't know, that's a good question.
29:27
SPEAKER_06: Because uh I that's that is the thing is I like uh Lefroig way better than Lagervolin, and he likes it.
29:34
SPEAKER_06: And the one the one's more barbecue-y, which I actually don't like barbecue for the most part, like I do, but not as much as like Nick does, but I like LaFroig, which is more barbecue, and then the campfire, which Nick likes more barbecue, probably less campfire, like this, like English to blends and everything else, but he likes Logvolen.
29:53
SPEAKER_06: So it's like weird.
29:55
SPEAKER_06: But if you were to give me the option between Lafroy 10 and Logvolin 16, I'm taking Lafroig 10 every day, all day.
30:02
SPEAKER_06: I still think that's the best scotch you can get, period, for the price and availability and everything else wrapped up into it.
30:07
SPEAKER_06: It's good, it's good, but and Ryan's gonna listen to this and be like, Yes, preach it.
30:12
SPEAKER_03: I don't have very many on my uh logvalin side.
30:14
SPEAKER_03: No, it is good.
30:15
SPEAKER_03: Logvulin is good, but it's it's very vegan.
30:17
SPEAKER_03: It is when you were like Micah, I don't like like I don't like scotch, haven't really gotten to scotch, logvolum should not be your first one.
30:25
SPEAKER_02: That's that's more than what region is.
30:26
SPEAKER_02: So I literally don't know anything about it.
30:28
SPEAKER_02: All the ones that we're talking about here with the the like logvalin and LaFroig and all that, that's all Isla.
30:34
SPEAKER_02: Oh Isla.
30:34
SPEAKER_02: Okay, the super smoky, which is the super smoky, super peaty, which drink in an ash drink.
30:40
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, ah, I have a story about that.
30:42
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so my buddy, his name's Paul Sutherland, he's from Scotland, he's a co-worker.
30:48
SPEAKER_01: He actually told me while I was over there on work trip one time that the reason why they they started using peat to smoke was because it's so windy in uh what was it called again?
31:02
SPEAKER_01: Isla Isla that like the trees all blew down and they don't grow back up.
31:08
SPEAKER_01: So they don't have wood.
31:09
SPEAKER_01: So they have but they do have tons of peat.
31:11
SPEAKER_01: And so that's what they use to smoke.
31:14
SPEAKER_03: We just I always assumed it was because they were it was traditional for them to heat their homes with peat, not which is also because they don't have to be.
31:21
SPEAKER_06: It could be the same thing, yeah.
31:22
SPEAKER_06: I just never thought about that.
31:24
SPEAKER_06: And and uh they build their homes out of stone and like that roof, which is like a hay roof, they don't even use wood like in Ireland or Scotland, that whole area with the with the wet the islands and everything else.
31:35
SPEAKER_06: That windy, that's crazy.
31:37
SPEAKER_06: But when you think about it, there's not a lot of trees.
31:39
SPEAKER_01: When you look at pictures of that area, it's rocky, it's mountains, you know, but it's grass and stuff, but no like tree, like forests.
31:45
SPEAKER_01: I mean, all of the white people in Scotland are pastyway.
31:48
SPEAKER_01: I mean, there's like the sun doesn't come out doesn't have much.
31:52
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, when the sun comes out, and this is no joke, when the sun comes out, all of the office buildings in Glasgow and Edinburgh are empty out, and everybody's out at the bar outside trying to get something soaking up the sun.
32:06
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's what they do.
32:07
SPEAKER_01: So a bunch of vampires walking around, yeah, yeah.
32:11
SPEAKER_01: But they want the sun, it's the opposite.
32:13
SPEAKER_01: But one thing I'll tell you that they are that a tough ass people.
32:18
SPEAKER_01: I'm not no joke.
32:19
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they are super tough.
32:20
SPEAKER_02: So now, one counter to what we're talking about, though, with all that is is my cousin, uh, my cousin Chris, that I've talked about a few different times.
32:29
SPEAKER_02: He really wants to be a whiskey guy, and he just can't do it.
32:33
SPEAKER_02: Like he just, he just the the bite of whiskey and stuff just is not there, and he just he just can't do it, but he wants to be, and so he's always trying to be, and he's always trying different ones to try to find the one that's gonna that's gonna flip him.
32:46
SPEAKER_02: But we were out to eat one time, and I ordered a lore.
32:50
SPEAKER_02: Lafroy lore, that's a good bottle, um, which is a great bottle, and I I got it for me, but I let him try it.
32:57
SPEAKER_02: And because scotch isn't very bitey, you know, they're normally 80-proof, you know, they normally don't have a lot of bite to them.
33:05
SPEAKER_02: Uh, he really enjoyed it because he just he wasn't comparing it to other alcohols, he was really comparing it to like, oh, this is a good barbecue, this is a good, you know, that kind of thing.
33:19
SPEAKER_02: And so, because of that, he kind of liked that that flavor profile and stuff because it didn't bite him the way that like bourbons and and all that does.
33:28
SPEAKER_02: And so, because of that, it it ended up being a pretty good, pretty good bottle for him, yeah, because he wasn't it didn't have the alcohol bite, it has a flavor bite, it has a big bold flavor, but it doesn't do the same thing.
33:42
SPEAKER_06: So concerned with that that it doesn't get the other exactly, yeah.
33:46
SPEAKER_06: That's another plus for Lafroy over long ago.
33:49
SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
33:50
SPEAKER_02: Were you guys eating anything with it?
33:51
SPEAKER_02: We were, we were at uh Opas, so we were we were up in up in Delaware at Opas, and um, I believe it was towards the end of our meal, so we'd eaten, so it probably had some sort of a pasta or or something like that.
34:03
SPEAKER_02: We did order the the pita and and and some stuff, but it was the end, so it would have been probably a pasta of some sort.
34:11
SPEAKER_02: Usually, usually a spicier pasta, I think is normally what he goes for.
34:14
SPEAKER_06: So I was gonna say for for people that don't know, uh after like the that's where scotch really shines, in my opinion, is after a big meal.
34:22
SPEAKER_06: It's like anything else, anything that's super heavy, usually following a meal is where it's at, like a strong cigar or pipe, you know, or whatever.
34:30
SPEAKER_06: Those things are always better after a meal, they're super like satiating.
34:35
SPEAKER_06: Whereas like before, maybe not so much, you know what I mean?
34:38
SPEAKER_06: Especially like like four o'clock in the afternoon, maybe that's not time for scotch for a lot of people, you know.
34:43
SPEAKER_06: Seven o'clock, seven thirty at night after a meal, that might be a better time for scotch.
34:48
SPEAKER_03: Right, right.
34:48
SPEAKER_03: Makes sense.
34:49
SPEAKER_03: So the idea of the blended scotch, like Johnny Walker pulls from all of their distilleries to then blend a bunch of single malts together to form a blended scotch.
34:58
SPEAKER_03: Right.
34:59
SPEAKER_03: They make their own, right?
35:01
SPEAKER_03: So like that's their own distillery.
35:03
SPEAKER_03: Uh yes.
35:04
SPEAKER_03: Their own brand, I should say.
35:05
SPEAKER_03: So it's not it's not like Johnny Walker pulling from their stuff.
35:07
SPEAKER_03: So they have uh sorry, the two Glenfitic.
35:12
SPEAKER_03: Yep, Glenfit.
35:14
SPEAKER_02: And then uh Belvini.
35:15
SPEAKER_03: So they own those two at least.
35:17
SPEAKER_03: Do you know?
35:17
SPEAKER_03: Are they pulling from those distilleries?
35:20
SPEAKER_03: Most likely.
35:20
SPEAKER_02: Okay.
35:21
SPEAKER_02: The uh Monkey Shoulder, I don't believe, has its own distillery, so it's just a blend of other scotches.
35:27
SPEAKER_02: Since they own those, I'm sure those are in here, and they're both space eyes.
35:31
SPEAKER_03: So very light, very fruity.
35:34
SPEAKER_03: What not wall?
35:35
SPEAKER_03: I'd say watery, but not like iced down watery kind of bit, but like just thinner.
35:39
SPEAKER_02: It's thinner space size.
35:41
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's it's it's fruitier, it's kind of light in flavor.
35:46
SPEAKER_02: It doesn't have that boldness that we're talking about with like the isla stuff of the big peat and the big smoke.
35:52
SPEAKER_02: I uh spacides tend to be fruity, creamy, flowery.
35:57
SPEAKER_02: I don't know, but yeah, friendly.
36:00
SPEAKER_02: They're shaking you with both hands.
36:01
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I feel like I don't know why I just thought about this.
36:03
SPEAKER_03: Spaceides, if if you're a bourbon drinker, not a scotch, and trying to figure out what do you mean fruity, light, watery, like I don't even know what to compare that to.
36:11
SPEAKER_03: This is like a weeded bourbon.
36:13
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like spacesides are almost like weeded bourbons where they're very creamy, they're easy to drink.
36:18
SPEAKER_03: Your Islas are gonna be your rice.
36:21
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they are full bold, spicy.
36:25
SPEAKER_03: They're in your face.
36:26
SPEAKER_03: Those are good comparison.
36:28
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, uh, this is like a creamy, weeded, weeded whiskey of some kind, weeded bourbon, weeded rye.
36:34
SPEAKER_03: Space sides are very easy for that.
36:36
SPEAKER_06: Yep, yep.
36:36
SPEAKER_06: They're it's like I said, they're they're giving you a handshake with both hands.
36:40
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, it's the you ever had that where somebody you give that and then someone puts their hand on top and they kind of shake a little bit and they're they almost bring you in double short.
36:48
SPEAKER_06: It's like a very like it's like a hug but a handshake kind of a deal.
36:51
SPEAKER_06: You're like, I feel very welcomed.
36:52
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that is space.
36:54
SPEAKER_03: I feel like that's a very wanna bring you in.
36:56
SPEAKER_05: That's a politician thing, I feel like yeah.
36:57
SPEAKER_03: The double-sided hand.
36:58
SPEAKER_06: That's called glad glad handing.
37:00
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that's the glad hand, the spaceside gladness.
37:03
SPEAKER_02: I feel very like that's a really good way.
37:05
SPEAKER_02: Because like for me, if I'm if I'm shaking your hand, where it's a it's a one-handed deal, but if I'm like thanking you for something, it becomes a two-hander.
37:14
SPEAKER_02: Like it bec I do, I add the second hand as like an extra, like this is meaningful.
37:19
SPEAKER_02: To reinforce the moment, it's a reinforced, like this is you you did something special for me and I appreciate it.
37:25
SPEAKER_02: Like, that's what the second hand means.
37:28
SPEAKER_06: The natural progression is like anything more than that is like the whole when you bring it close, the hand close to you, and then you put the hug right with the one arm, the one arm with the hug, but the other one's still kind of clasped.
37:39
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that's like the ultimate.
37:40
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
37:41
SPEAKER_06: You don't get a two-handed hug unless you're like over the moon about somebody.
37:45
SPEAKER_06: Right, exactly.
37:46
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's either that or for some reason, little old ladies of church, those are the other people I do two hands for pretty much every time.
37:52
SPEAKER_02: Which is that's that's fine.
37:54
SPEAKER_06: You know, for something about women that I will do that as well, where like I either ever, if I give a handshake to a woman, I do it with like just my finger.
38:02
SPEAKER_02: Like a light, yeah.
38:03
SPEAKER_06: Like like you, like they're a princess or something.
38:06
SPEAKER_06: And then a lot of times I will come in with the other hand though a little bit and kind of because they're so like small, and I don't know what it is.
38:12
SPEAKER_06: I don't know what it is.
38:13
SPEAKER_06: Not that I'm a huge fan.
38:14
SPEAKER_06: You always hunch over, you kind of hunch and you're kind of doing a two-handed kind of like you're holding on to something tiny that's about to get away, you know.
38:20
SPEAKER_06: Right, yeah.
38:21
SPEAKER_01: And by get away, you mean die.
38:23
SPEAKER_01: Right.
38:23
SPEAKER_07: Is this like a fish that's gonna squirm away?
38:25
SPEAKER_07: Watch the steps, granny.
38:27
SPEAKER_02: With these men look in your eyes, we're we're clasping.
38:30
SPEAKER_02: It's like a uh, you know, a good solid handshake.
38:32
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, you know, that's another thing is uh with the women, I kind of look more at the hands.
38:37
SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
38:37
SPEAKER_06: With the get with the man, though, you're always looking eye to eye.
38:39
SPEAKER_06: You don't get a handshake with the eye with out to eye contact, it's weird.
38:42
SPEAKER_03: It's awkward if you don't have eye to eye.
38:44
SPEAKER_06: Well, like with a female, a lot of times it's I want to look at the hands, and then I kind of and then I, you know, yeah, it's kind of like a hybrid type of uh eye hand eye contact thing.
38:53
SPEAKER_06: Maybe because you don't want to be too like too forward, yeah.
38:56
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, even with 85-year-old grandma.
38:58
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I also think that with with dudes and they do the hand the hand over the hand thing, and then they pull you in, it can also be aggressive.
39:05
SPEAKER_01: It can't be it can be, it can be and that's why like I'm like I'm side-eyeing you at this point.
39:12
SPEAKER_01: Well, but I'm like a I'm sure I'm the five six.
39:16
SPEAKER_01: Somebody pull, I don't care, you know, pull me in.
39:18
SPEAKER_01: It's like a show of force, or you're trying to alpha it right.
39:23
SPEAKER_06: It only goes one of two ways.
39:24
SPEAKER_06: It's either like this was the best or this is like that, you know what I mean?
39:28
SPEAKER_06: Like it's if there's no middle ground.
39:30
SPEAKER_06: This is the best ever, like this was warranted or aggressive.
39:34
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah, what are you trying?
39:35
SPEAKER_06: Who are you trying to prove?
39:36
SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
39:36
SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
39:37
SPEAKER_06: What are you trying to show off to?
39:38
SPEAKER_03: Come on, man.
39:38
SPEAKER_03: Right.
39:39
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, are you guys fans of Park Sorak?
39:41
SPEAKER_03: The the TV show?
39:42
SPEAKER_03: Oh my gosh, and everything's hilarious.
39:44
SPEAKER_03: Everyone has compared me to Ron Swanson.
39:46
SPEAKER_03: And hearing you guys shake hands, like talk about handshakes.
39:49
SPEAKER_03: There's a a line that he says that I gave the man two handshakes.
39:54
SPEAKER_03: Is that not enough?
39:55
SPEAKER_03: Like, of like congratulations or thank yous.
39:57
SPEAKER_03: Like, I shook the man's hand twice.
39:59
SPEAKER_03: I relate to that very well.
40:01
SPEAKER_03: Like, I shook his hand twice.
40:02
SPEAKER_03: Like, we're not gonna look like him, too.
40:06
SPEAKER_02: We're not clear on that one.
40:07
SPEAKER_02: We love scotch.
40:08
SPEAKER_02: He didn't save my life.
40:09
SPEAKER_02: I mean, he shook his hand twice.
40:11
SPEAKER_01: Is that not enough?
40:12
SPEAKER_01: You do have a Ron Swanson quality, that's for sure.
40:15
SPEAKER_01: I think it's the might be the beard.
40:16
SPEAKER_01: It might be the beard, yeah.
40:19
SPEAKER_03: Yes, and smoked meats, and his favorite drink of choice is log villain.
40:23
SPEAKER_07: Yep, and your wife is a brunette, and the the show is was based in Indiana.
40:29
SPEAKER_07: Oh, it was?
40:30
SPEAKER_07: I didn't know that.
40:30
SPEAKER_07: I thought it was like Wyoming.
40:32
SPEAKER_07: No, Pawnee, Indiana.
40:33
SPEAKER_07: I never really watched the show.
40:35
SPEAKER_01: Man, it's been a long time since I've watched it.
40:37
SPEAKER_01: Great show.
40:40
SPEAKER_03: But going back to the old person handshake, am I the only one that misses having old people candy given to them?
40:47
SPEAKER_03: Like from the pocket?
40:48
SPEAKER_06: I'm the I'm slowly becoming the guy who gives that candy.
40:50
SPEAKER_06: You are, yes, which is what do you hand out?
40:52
SPEAKER_06: What do you give?
40:52
SPEAKER_06: Werthers, the werther caramels, man.
40:54
SPEAKER_06: I always have a like a few in my pocket or the altoids mints.
40:58
SPEAKER_06: Oh, yes, which actually are harder to give out.
41:01
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, but I will offer those.
41:03
SPEAKER_06: People don't always take them.
41:04
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
41:05
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
41:05
SPEAKER_01: If you strategically offer them, curious men, you know, and then you make it, and then they're like, I don't know.
41:10
SPEAKER_06: And then you pop the tin and say, it's the curious men.
41:13
SPEAKER_06: People are people are gonna go for that.
41:15
SPEAKER_06: See, it's on the tin.
41:16
SPEAKER_06: Become a dad.
41:16
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, when you become a dad, you start doing things like that.
41:19
SPEAKER_03: It was always Worthers, so the the men would hand out Worthers, and the old ladies would always hand out the strawberry ones that had like the strawberry gel inside.
41:27
SPEAKER_07: Like a strawberry in the wrapping, yeah.
41:28
SPEAKER_07: Oh, yeah, and then cream savers.
41:30
SPEAKER_07: So you do this at like church, is that what you said?
41:32
SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I mean the thing is, and here's a random people in the right on the sidewalk.
41:38
SPEAKER_06: Here's what I learned about the why the old people do that because they enjoy it themselves, and they can enjoy it themselves.
41:47
SPEAKER_06: They're at this point where they they they're like, I get to do this, but then you if you ever pop the candy in front of people, you feel a little bit self-conscious, but like, should I be sharing this?
41:56
SPEAKER_06: Like, I hope you brought enough for everybody, right?
41:59
SPEAKER_06: So if you at least give one away, you're like sharing, and they're kind of in on the secret with you, you know what I mean?
42:05
SPEAKER_06: It's if you've never given somebody, like, especially in a group of like, say, four, five, six people, you just pick one person to give a candy, like offer, like, hey, you want this?
42:13
SPEAKER_06: And they take it.
42:14
SPEAKER_06: It's like you guys shared something, and everybody else kind of looks like jealous.
42:18
SPEAKER_06: It totally happens.
42:19
SPEAKER_06: Like, if you've ever been around somebody and they got a worther and you didn't, deep down you're like, Well, I didn't get one, but but you're not gonna say, like, can I have one?
42:27
SPEAKER_06: You know, because that's kind of weird, right?
42:29
SPEAKER_06: It's I'm telling you, it's kind of a cool feeling.
42:31
SPEAKER_03: I think I'm gonna start doing that with like bottles of whiskey.
42:35
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, pick pick one person and offer the and offer to give them like a hard candy, and you're like, we shared something.
42:42
SPEAKER_06: Also, like, it's kind of it's like it's good to be the king, you know what I mean?
42:46
SPEAKER_06: Like, I have these and you don't, yeah, and then those people that they'll go out and get, oh man, maybe I should have some Worthers, maybe I should have a ten of altoids, you know?
42:54
SPEAKER_06: Done that's the thing.
42:56
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, it's true, one althoid at a time.
42:58
SPEAKER_03: I think I'm I'm gonna start carrying around airplane bottles of whiskey for that.
43:02
SPEAKER_03: I see a dog like sneaking to him, like, here you go.
43:05
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we'll share.
43:06
SPEAKER_02: They're gonna get a different reputation at that room.
43:10
SPEAKER_03: But the adults are the adults are looking.
43:13
SPEAKER_03: All the kids get the candy, the adults, what do they get?
43:15
SPEAKER_04: You know, I gotta include Nick's gonna be in church, like and then you took the bread and he and Nick's gonna be like, You want one of these?
43:26
SPEAKER_04: We're having communion.
43:28
SPEAKER_07: Yeah, this is made out of the same thing as bread, it's fine.
43:31
SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I like to carry them around.
43:33
SPEAKER_01: What you should do sometime is to throw a wrench into things at church when you're handing out the candies out of the tin, is like pull out a different tin, it's got like joints in it.
43:41
SPEAKER_01: Oh, wrong one, and you put it back in your pocket.
43:43
SPEAKER_04: Like it could be fake.
43:44
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, but that's seeing what is the wrong thing.
43:50
SPEAKER_04: This is really later.
43:51
SPEAKER_06: Mixed pills.
43:52
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, you just hand the tin, they open up, they look at it, like, oh wait, hold on.
43:55
SPEAKER_06: And then you grab it back, and then you give them the other one.
43:58
SPEAKER_06: That that one, that one.
43:59
SPEAKER_06: That's the one.
44:04
SPEAKER_04: They're all candy, and you just start like picking out different ones and eating them like real quick, looking around.
44:09
SPEAKER_04: People are like, what the what's happening right now?
44:12
SPEAKER_04: You just took 14 pills, different pills.
44:15
SPEAKER_03: I think this is why we're not allowed to go to the same direction.
44:19
SPEAKER_03: But yeah, all in all, I mean, what do you think of this bottle?
44:21
SPEAKER_03: Would you buy this bottle for yourself?
44:23
SPEAKER_03: Not a big scotch guy, the first time having it.
44:26
SPEAKER_01: Would you go back for it?
44:27
SPEAKER_01: I do not have to think about that one.
44:29
SPEAKER_01: I would really yeah, for sure.
44:31
SPEAKER_01: Because it's, I mean, here's the thing.
44:33
SPEAKER_01: If I'm gonna get into tasting or trying or buying other bottles of scotch, this is a good like entry point for me.
44:42
SPEAKER_01: And also, I can always use it as a mixer, right?
44:45
SPEAKER_01: Right.
44:46
SPEAKER_06: So that you and you could give it to people.
44:47
SPEAKER_06: If somebody comes over, hey, I want a scotch, perfect.
44:50
SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
44:50
SPEAKER_06: And it's$30.
44:51
SPEAKER_06: Right.
44:51
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, right.
44:52
SPEAKER_03: It's a hard one to turn down for the price.
44:54
SPEAKER_05: Right.
44:54
SPEAKER_03: Like that's a good price tag.
44:56
SPEAKER_06: What do you think about the tobacco before we uh sign off on this?
45:00
SPEAKER_02: I really like this tobacco.
45:01
SPEAKER_02: I'm really enjoying this smoke.
45:03
SPEAKER_02: When you said it was a hybrid of English or aromatic, anytime I hear aromatic, I'm a le I'm a little bit skeptical.
45:10
SPEAKER_02: Very neat.
45:11
SPEAKER_02: Like, but this is really good.
45:13
SPEAKER_02: And I um I'm what is the what is the uh room note like for for you two not smoking?
45:18
SPEAKER_02: Is it a pretty good room note?
45:20
SPEAKER_02: Is it kind of tobacco-y?
45:22
SPEAKER_01: So uh I mean, I don't want to take your steal your thunder, whatever, but you may have something different than me, because I'm right by the the the fan.
45:29
SPEAKER_01: It could be.
45:30
SPEAKER_01: So here's my thing.
45:31
SPEAKER_01: I uh I I enjoy smoking a pipe cigar every once in a while.
45:35
SPEAKER_01: I don't do it often, right?
45:36
SPEAKER_01: But what I enjoy even more is the secondhand smoke.
45:40
SPEAKER_01: I actually do enjoy smelling it.
45:42
SPEAKER_01: That's just like I'm the same here.
45:43
SPEAKER_01: I love it.
45:44
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't know.
45:45
SPEAKER_01: Is I'm okay with it.
45:46
SPEAKER_03: So do you get much off of this?
45:48
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think I mean it's uh I I love the smell of almost every smoke pipe.
45:52
SPEAKER_01: Some are really rank, yeah.
45:53
SPEAKER_01: Some are not, yeah.
45:55
SPEAKER_01: But but this one is not, and also I can't remember a time that I was like, oh man, that smells really bad from a pipe.
46:04
SPEAKER_06: Almost every pipe tobacco, even the bad one, smell good.
46:07
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and this one for me is very faint.
46:09
SPEAKER_03: Like uh smelling.
46:10
SPEAKER_03: Did you get a chance to smell just the tin by itself?
46:14
SPEAKER_03: Uh Steve Scott.
46:16
SPEAKER_06: The smell of that is nothing like what it smells for the I think it's one of the smoothest, it's not quite aromatic, but if it it's the closest thing to an aromatic I'd ever want to smoke, yeah.
46:28
SPEAKER_06: Because it is it is sweet, yep, it's got a lot of good flavor.
46:31
SPEAKER_06: It's this it's very smooth for it being having Cavendish in it.
46:34
SPEAKER_06: There's no bite.
46:35
SPEAKER_02: It's very smooth.
46:36
SPEAKER_02: Uh when I when I when I was packing, I was like, this is a really moist, wet.
46:40
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was a it's a really wet thing.
46:42
SPEAKER_06: You can even hear it crackle when you smoke it.
46:44
SPEAKER_02: And so I was a little, I was a little concerned with that too.
46:46
SPEAKER_02: That I was like, it's not gonna stay lit.
46:48
SPEAKER_02: And it's it's not saying lit the best for me.
46:50
SPEAKER_06: You have to keep relying, but it when you light it, it stays lit scroll as long as you keep puffing on it.
46:54
SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
46:55
SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I I would I would smoke this again.
46:57
SPEAKER_02: It's a very good one.
46:58
SPEAKER_02: Uh, and I think it's going okay with monkey shoulder too.
47:01
SPEAKER_02: I think it's adding just a little bit, it's pretty light, and so it kind of they go together.
47:05
SPEAKER_06: It's not overly English, but it's adding a little bit.
47:08
SPEAKER_06: You know what it reminds me of Boswell's aromatics, where they're again, they're kind of like not super aromatic because you still enjoy smoking them, but they are aromatic in the sense of like they smell a little bit better, they have a little bit more flavor to them, they're smooth because it's a very cool smoke.
47:24
SPEAKER_02: It is, and when you read it, you said it had latichea and laticia and parik in it.
47:30
SPEAKER_02: And I was like, uh, but this is smoking much lighter than that, like than I would imagine it to.
47:36
SPEAKER_06: Light rum punch, and it's got the Turkish and the yeah.
47:40
SPEAKER_06: I mean, so it's I think it's good.
47:42
SPEAKER_06: I think it's probably the closest, closest thing to an aromatic I'd want to smoke at this point, and it's I still enjoy it.
47:48
SPEAKER_06: I do think it's going well with the scotch.
47:50
SPEAKER_03: I feel like the room note is it is faint enough that you guys could smoke it around like the wives, and they wouldn't care.
47:59
SPEAKER_06: It's a very friendly kind of uh even the smoke, it's an all-day blend.
48:02
SPEAKER_06: You could smoke this all the time.
48:04
SPEAKER_03: You could absolutely so which is interesting is the smell of the tobacco, like without you guys smoking it, just the smell of the tin is like an offset wood smoker, like intense log smoker.
48:14
SPEAKER_03: The room note is like a Traeger, like it's like a pellet smoker.
48:18
SPEAKER_03: It's it's there, but it's faint.
48:20
SPEAKER_03: Like it's it's not the intensity level, it is like at a one or a two kind of thing, which some people love.
48:26
SPEAKER_03: Like some people like that's the most amount of smoke I want to have.
48:30
SPEAKER_03: I want to have intense smoke.
48:32
SPEAKER_03: So I feel like this is a good it's friendly, just like the Scotch.
48:35
SPEAKER_03: Yep.
48:35
SPEAKER_02: I feel like it's great.
48:36
SPEAKER_02: You nailed it.
48:36
SPEAKER_02: Good job.
48:37
SPEAKER_02: Nailed it, didn't even do it on purpose and still nailed it.
48:41
SPEAKER_05: See if you can nail the next one.
48:43
SPEAKER_05: No pressure.
48:44
SPEAKER_05: Stay tuned, we'll have Micah again.
