- 0:30severe mental health issues, so get yourself comfortable and
- 0:34enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:40Hi, it's Adam here and in this episode of the.
- 0:43Hypnotist you're going to be. Listening to a hypnosis session
- 0:47all about fear of flying and. It was with a.
- 0:51Client that had a very, very long haul destination.
- 0:54They were flying from the UK all the way to Australia via
- 0:58Singapore. So that meant that they had four
- 1:01flights within the space of about two weeks, two flights to
- 1:05get there and two flights to get back.
- 1:07And that was the perfect opportunity for them to banish
- 1:11this fear for good. And a lot of people with
- 1:14phobias, even if they make progress, they have this
- 1:17niggling doubt of but what if it doesn't work the next time?
- 1:20Or what if I freak out on the next flight?
- 1:22And that. Becomes a self fulfilling
- 1:23prophecy. What's really useful when we're
- 1:26talking about anxiety and particularly beliefs about fears
- 1:29and phobias, is to have what's called a convincer strategy.
- 1:34What has to happen in order for you to believe that you don't
- 1:38have that fear anymore? Because there might be certain
- 1:41things that you believe that you're not afraid of.
- 1:43If I said a kitten, you know you've got a fairly.
- 1:47Good. Sense of certainty that you're
- 1:48not afraid of a kitten and there'll be loads of things that
- 1:51you have a belief about that fear and that creates a self
- 1:55fulfilling prophecy. So when progress is being made,
- 1:58what's really important is that if there are, let's say, echoes
- 2:03or even moments of anxiety, that doesn't mean that you
- 2:08necessarily have the fear. It just means you felt fear at
- 2:11that particular point in time. And I'm sharing this story with
- 2:14the client in the actual session.
- 2:17I don't have a fear of flying. I don't have a phobia of flying.
- 2:21But there was. One flight where I was on an
- 2:23internal flight in Colombia and almost everyone on the plane
- 2:26right before we took off started praying.
- 2:29I'm not a religious person, but seeing everyone on the plane
- 2:32pray like their lives were at stake.
- 2:34And clearly it was a cultural thing.
- 2:37You know, I felt anxiety in that moment, but I didn't come to the
- 2:41conclusion that I now had a fear of flying.
- 2:44It was just I felt anxious in that moment because seeing
- 2:48everyone think about their mortality.
- 2:50Triggered something in me. But I looked at that as the
- 2:54anomaly. It's like I'm not afraid of
- 2:55flying, but I felt anxious that time is a better way of framing
- 2:59it than oh, now I'm afraid of flying and therefore I can't
- 3:02fly. So there is that certain things
- 3:05that is really useful. So what we had in this session
- 3:08is. What they would.
- 3:10Need to do in order to make the evaluation.
- 3:13They're not afraid of flying anymore.
- 3:14And that would be, you know, being able to sleep while
- 3:18they're flying or enjoy a good book or enjoy a good movie.
- 3:22Or. Enjoy, you know, certain
- 3:25elements of it, you know, feel relaxed, be able to have
- 3:27conversations, you know, evaluate that they felt
- 3:30comfortable on the plane and that would all be evidence that
- 3:33they fear has gone. But also it involves coping
- 3:37strategies. In order to feel anxious, you
- 3:39have to think at some level about the future and be making
- 3:42evaluations. And therefore, mindfulness is a
- 3:44really good hack to get out of any temporary feelings of
- 3:48anxiety if you're fully in the moment.
- 3:51And that just means experiencing your senses based on what you're
- 3:55experiencing in that moment, not in the past, not in the future,
- 3:58but in that moment is a good way to really make it very difficult
- 4:03feeling anxious at all because you're invested in the moment.
- 4:06And there are certain things like watching a movie or reading
- 4:09a book that gets people in natural trance states anyway.
- 4:12So if you're totally immersed in a book, you probably don't
- 4:14realize you're turning the pages and therefore for that moment
- 4:18you're in the story and not on a plane.
- 4:20So there's various things going on here.
- 4:22So if you have a fear of flying, you might get some value from
- 4:24this session. I've got lots of other sessions
- 4:27on my podcast as well about fear of flying, but they're all
- 4:29created for specific individuals.
- 4:31So if you want a bespoke session for you, there'll be a link in
- 4:34the show notes. Click that book a free Zoom
- 4:37consultation call with me and we can have a chat about working
- 4:39together. For now though, you may just get
- 4:42value from this and not need to work with me directly.
- 4:44So find a quiet, comfortable place where you won't be
- 4:46disturbed. Relax and.
- 4:49Enjoy the session. Take a deep breath in, and as
- 5:34you breathe in, breathe in a resourceful feeling of calm and
- 5:40relaxation. And as you exhale, feel a
- 5:50wonderful sense of letting go. Breathing in, relaxation and
- 6:09exhaling any feelings of tension, stress or worries.
- 6:19For a lot of people's, stress seems to congregate around the
- 6:23jaw, the neck, and the shoulders, sometimes around the
- 6:29forehead, whereas anxiety feels more like deep in the gut.
- 6:39And just imagine, as you're breathing in that resourceful
- 6:41relaxation, imagine it melting away any stress or anxiety, just
- 6:52like snow melting under sunshine, and feel how good it
- 7:01would feel for any of that stress or anxiety to feel like
- 7:07it's leaving your body in your outward breath as you breathe in
- 7:18and breathe out. I wonder if you.
- 7:22Could use the power of your imagination to imagine observing
- 7:32escalators, perhaps in a shopping centre or even an
- 7:40airport, escalators that go up and down.
- 7:47And I want you to see the rhythmic movement of those
- 7:52escalators, maybe see them side by side, see one going up as the
- 7:58other goes down. Get a sense of opposing forces,
- 8:10different directions simultaneously as you breathe in
- 8:17and breathe out. Get a sense.
- 8:19Then sometimes sensations in your body can feel similar.
- 8:26Maybe your arms can feel heavy and loose in one moment, and
- 8:32then light and floaty in another.
- 8:38And as you stare into these escalators, I want you to recall
- 8:43the time where something used to make you feel anxious.
- 8:51And maybe there was a time that you would avoid certain things
- 8:57because you didn't like. How it made you?
- 9:00Feel, but continue to stare into those contrasting directions of
- 9:09the escalators as you get a sense.
- 9:16Then sometimes something can affect you emotionally, affect
- 9:25your thoughts, and then it doesn't.
- 9:31I want you to get a sense. Then there was a time when you
- 9:36couldn't do something or didn't want to do something, and now do
- 9:39that thing with ease. And just imagine these
- 9:48escalators are connected to a busy airport.
- 9:58I want you to imagine walking up to the escalators and allowing
- 10:07them to take you all the way up to a level.
- 10:18And as they do so, imagine yourself accessing a higher
- 10:24state of consciousness. As the escalator enables you to
- 10:30rise, you feel deeper. I'm deeper, relaxed.
- 10:39Imagine you're now approaching that next level higher in that
- 10:45airport, a vast terminal, and get a sense that there is a
- 10:52quiet excitement in the air, passengers walking with purpose.
- 11:02Maybe there's a distant sound of announcements, that sound that
- 11:09luggage trolleys and suitcases make when it's being wheeled
- 11:12around. I want you to get a sense that
- 11:19you know the destination you're about to go to.
- 11:23Perhaps you could imagine seeing a boarding pass or a passport in
- 11:27your hand and see the destination on that boarding
- 11:32pass. As you see the destination,
- 11:39smile to yourself. You want to go to that
- 11:44destination. You don't have to.
- 11:48There's no gun to your head saying that you have to go to
- 11:51that destination. You're making a choice to go to
- 11:56that place. So feel a sense of calm,
- 11:59anticipation field and you have all of the resources not only to
- 12:09get to that destination, but to enjoy the journey.
- 12:20Imagine all of those necessary steps before you could even
- 12:24board the plane. Approaching security, perhaps
- 12:37waiting in a lounge area, maybe there is some kind of passport
- 12:45control or checking of documents.
- 12:52Feel a pragmatic sense that you've done this before, you can
- 12:57do it again. All of this is very manageable.
- 13:07The key thought that seems to be ruminating in your mind, I can
- 13:12do this, I can handle this, no big deal.
- 13:20And as you get to that departure lounge, as you see it getting
- 13:28closer to the time to board the plane, feel a growing sense of
- 13:36positive anticipation that the moment you board the plane, it
- 13:43is a portal, a gateway to new experiences, the creation of new
- 13:49memories, new possibilities, and you feel very ready.
- 14:05Imagine hearing some kind of notification to board the plane.
- 14:12And you do. The anticipation is there, but
- 14:18in the absence of anxiety or fear, you're anticipating the TV
- 14:25shows you're going to watch, the food you're going to taste, the
- 14:29comfort of the chairs, or perhaps things you're looking
- 14:36forward to on that flight. And as you settle into your
- 14:41seat, maybe there's a familiar click of a seat belt.
- 14:47And notice in any moment, you can just have that long outward
- 14:53breath to feel. In the moment, as the plane
- 15:02makes its way to the runway, glance out of the window.
- 15:09But you have a sense of a different frame of thinking.
- 15:17You're in a dialogue, seems confident, assured.
- 15:26I want you to get a sense that the evaluation is that you will
- 15:32enjoy this flight. You don't know where it comes
- 15:37from. It's just a deep sense.
- 15:38Then not only are you going to be less scared, you're going to
- 15:43be so much more confident that you can enjoy more elements of
- 15:49it. I want you to get a sense.
- 15:59Then you're now taking off, but you're more interested in the
- 16:09things you get to do. Maybe walk around the cabin,
- 16:18recline your chair or start watching something or reading
- 16:23something that stimulates you and notice before long how
- 16:32quickly you feel so comfortable in your seat and imagine
- 16:39reaching something to engage with.
- 16:43Maybe ATV show or a movie. A film, a book, a word search
- 16:49and notice how quickly you can immerse yourself in that new
- 16:55thing. You realise how easily your mind
- 16:59becomes absorbed, how the world outside fades as what you focus
- 17:06on becomes what you give your attention to.
- 17:15You can't help but thinking then anxiety needs attention to
- 17:20survive, so you will choose to give your attention on those
- 17:25things that give you something positive back in return.
- 17:35Maybe you can imagine watching a show feeling completely drawn
- 17:39into the story, the characters, the emotions.
- 17:43You're fully engaged, so much so that time passes effortlessly
- 17:51and there'll be moments you even forget you're on a plane at all
- 17:56because you're in the world that you're experiencing.
- 18:01Perhaps you've found yourself immersed in a book, one that
- 18:06truly captivates you. You don't even realise you're
- 18:12reading the words or turning the pages, you're immersed in the
- 18:16story. You just happen to be flying
- 18:24while you're reading that story, but that's all happening outside
- 18:30of your conscious attention. Or you might decide to enjoy a
- 18:39meal, a meal that maybe you've chosen in advance, savouring
- 18:44each bite mindfully. And mindfulness is simply giving
- 18:53something your attention. It could be the smell of the
- 18:58food, the temperature of the food, the taste or texture.
- 19:09If you are aware of any of these sensations, you are mindfully
- 19:13eating. And if you're mindfully eating,
- 19:17your attention is on your experience, not on any other
- 19:26thought at all. And maybe after that meal, you
- 19:35reach for a word search or a puzzle.
- 19:38Not because you need to, you just feel like stimulating your
- 19:42mind. If you're trying to solve a
- 19:49puzzle or find a hidden word, that's where your attention is
- 19:56and where focus goes. Energy flows.
- 20:03Do you enjoy these moments? Something begins to shift.
- 20:08You realise that if you can enjoy the flight, even in small
- 20:14ways, then there is nothing left to fear.
- 20:20If you can immerse yourself in a book, in a show, in a meal.
- 20:24Or in a simple puzzle, then you are not enduring the flight, you
- 20:31are enjoying it. You are flying with ease.
- 20:36You are a confident flyer. There are some people that
- 20:44consider themselves a confident flyer after flying just three or
- 20:49four times, but if someone has flown over 100 times, that is
- 20:59confidence. You know you can board the
- 21:06flight and get to your destination.
- 21:11As the flight continues, you reflect on this growing sense of
- 21:19comfort. The thinking shifts from what
- 21:25about the next flight to a simple reframe.
- 21:31If I can enjoy this flight, I'll enjoy the next one.
- 21:37If I can confidently fly now, I can confidently fly in the
- 21:41future. And I wonder how long it will
- 21:50take until the penny drops. You are no longer afraid of
- 21:55flying. Everyone that takes regular
- 22:01flights has felt anxious once or twice.
- 22:06So feeling anxious on a flight is not sufficient evidence to be
- 22:12afraid of flying. They are the anomalies.
- 22:18You are a confident flyer that every now and then experiences a
- 22:26temporary wave of anxiety that quickly subsides and the more
- 22:34you think of that, the truer it becomes.
- 22:38You are a confident flyer. As you start to think back on
- 22:50previous flights, you realize something else quite profound.
- 22:58You are far more courageous and resilient than you ever gave
- 23:02yourself credit for. Because even if anxiety was
- 23:07present at times, you still boarded the plane, You still
- 23:12flew. You still chose to embrace the
- 23:16journey. And if anxiety couldn't deter.
- 23:23You before. Then when you enjoy flying,
- 23:30nothing will stop you from flying again every flight you
- 23:36take and have taken. Every moment of.
- 23:39Calm you experience, every book you read, every TV show you
- 23:45watch, every meal you enjoy. That altitude, each one, is
- 23:51proof you are free from fear, that you are capable, that you
- 23:59are a confident flyer. And while you're on this
- 24:11imaginary flight, imagine the next flight, a future flight,
- 24:22but this time, imagine you're seeing yourself like you're
- 24:26someone else arriving at the airport, smiling, looking
- 24:33relaxed while going through security, feeling excited or
- 24:42just ambivalent while ready to board and see yourself immersed
- 24:47in things that make you feel calm or enjoy the experience.
- 24:51While you're on the flight, you're making the evaluation
- 24:58that the next flight will also be relaxing, calm, and
- 25:03enjoyable. If every flight you take, you
- 25:10not only enjoy the flight, but preempt that the next flight
- 25:15will also be enjoyable. You are creating a powerful,
- 25:20self fulfilling prophecy that will go on forever.
- 25:27The moment you are enjoying your flight, you evaluate the next
- 25:30flight will be fine. When the next flight is fine,
- 25:35you evaluate the next flight will be fine.
- 25:42And this can go on indefinitely, creating the very loop that was
- 25:52working against you to now work for you.
- 25:59See yourself as free, capable, making the evaluations.
- 26:05You think about that next flight, that you are a confident
- 26:09flyer and see the evidence of that confident flying in the
- 26:15very thought of your very next flight.
- 26:22And I want you to see something specific, see yourself on a
- 26:27flight. Where there is.
- 26:32Some kind of turbulence or movement.
- 26:37But see yourself composed, perhaps unfazed.
- 26:42It doesn't deter you from watching your TV show or reading
- 26:46your book. It doesn't stop you.
- 26:50And perhaps you can imagine other people on the fly looking
- 26:56more anxious than you do. And that just gives you even
- 27:00more evidence that you are a confident flyer.
- 27:08And when you accept this belief to be true, let me know.
- 27:10But nodding your head and now you believe it to be true, you
- 27:17will seek out references and evidence to make it more true.
- 27:22And the more you look, the more you will find evidence that you
- 27:26are a confident flyer. Many people would say 100
- 27:33flights is more than enough evidence that you are a
- 27:38confident flyer. The more you think about it, the
- 27:44more truer it becomes. And the truer it becomes, the
- 27:47more you feel like a confident flyer, until before long it will
- 27:55feel like that other thing that used to make you afraid and no
- 27:58longer does. No difference at all.
- 28:04Imagine landing at your destination, a big smile,
- 28:08feeling like anything is now possible as you hold on to that
- 28:15feeling of pride, elation, satisfaction, and a deep sense
- 28:21of confidence. It's time to return to the
- 28:24present, so take a deep breath in through your nose and out
- 28:30through your nose. Wiggle your fingers and wiggle
- 28:33your toes. Connect fully into the here and
- 28:36now as I now count from 1:00 to 10:00 to awaken you.
- 28:47Starting to count. 123 Waking up 456 more alert 7-8.
- 28:54Open your eyes. Open your eyes, 910.
- 28:57Wide awake, wide awake, wide awake.
