Latest / Birdland Territory / O's shock the Dodgers with a series win after dominating the finale

- 0:08Speaker 1: Oh, those fans, if you saw that coming the last
- 0:11Speaker 1: two days, raise your hand, but we may call you
- 0:15Speaker 1: a fibber, because Friday night the Oriels had one of
- 0:18Speaker 1: the most brutal losses of the year, maybe the most
- 0:21Speaker 1: brutal loss, and it looked like they might get rolled
- 0:24Speaker 1: at Dodger Stadium. The opposite occurred. They held on by
- 0:28Speaker 1: a thread Saturday night, and then today we're taping this
- 0:32Speaker 1: after the game they throttled the two time World Series
- 0:35Speaker 1: champion Dodgers twelve. Those fans, this is the Oriol's biggest
- 0:40Speaker 1: win margin of the year. They haven't had any of
- 0:43Speaker 1: their wins by eleven runs yet ten runs once. This
- 0:46Speaker 1: is eleven. And by the way, the Dodgers had not
- 0:49Speaker 1: lost back to back game since May eleventh and twelfth,
- 0:52Speaker 1: the last nine losses. Guys, they followed immediately with a
- 0:56Speaker 1: win until today. Surprise surprise here, How did this happen?
- 1:04Speaker 1: After Friday night? How can we try to make some
- 1:07Speaker 1: sense of this?
- 1:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I would like to make some sense of it also,
- 1:11Speaker 2: but I think it comes down to Trevor Rodgers just
- 1:13Speaker 2: being phenomenal last night.
- 1:15Speaker 3: And really just kind of the ace.
- 1:16Speaker 2: They kind of thought they were going to have and
- 1:18Speaker 2: he went out and he just shut down that lineup.
- 1:20Speaker 2: I mean, he was really aggressive in the zone. He
- 1:22Speaker 2: was just throwing heaters at him and they couldn't hit it.
- 1:24Speaker 2: It was really impressive to watch working quick, keeping the
- 1:27Speaker 2: defense engage, and it was just kind of one of
- 1:29Speaker 2: those things when you have an ace type starter, that's
- 1:33Speaker 2: kind of what you expect and they can really turn
- 1:35Speaker 2: a series on the.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Drop of a hat.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Because, like you said on Friday, that was a tough
- 1:39Speaker 2: loss and I thought that was going to carry over.
- 1:41Speaker 3: And it didn't.
- 1:42Speaker 2: But nothing has carried over this entire season, So I
- 1:44Speaker 2: guess I can't be that surprised. Good, bad, or different.
- 1:47Speaker 2: They can't seem to keep any kind of thing going.
- 1:50Speaker 2: I guess you would say good or bad. Like I said,
- 1:52Speaker 2: the bad triaks they somehow get out of and when
- 1:55Speaker 2: they play good baseball it seems to be hard to
- 1:58Speaker 2: continue to doing that also, But it was a great
- 2:00Speaker 2: series at Dodger Stadium this weekend and today was just
- 2:03Speaker 2: an offensive explosion.
- 2:06Speaker 4: He was just so impressive, guys.
- 2:09Speaker 5: And I know the ninth inning you kind of saw
- 2:12Speaker 5: more of the bad News Bears defense that you saw
- 2:14Speaker 5: at the beginning of the season a lot over the
- 2:17Speaker 5: past couple of nights. But putting that to the side
- 2:20Speaker 5: for a second, the Orioles really controlled this series. You know,
- 2:24Speaker 5: the Dodgers jumped out to that lead in Game one,
- 2:28Speaker 5: than the O's were able to have that two run
- 2:30Speaker 5: lead heading into the ninth inning. They led throughout yesterday,
- 2:33Speaker 5: they led throughout today.
- 2:36Speaker 4: They really controlled this series.
- 2:38Speaker 5: And you're right, Brad, Trevor Rodgers was fantastic and that was,
- 2:42Speaker 5: you know, his best start of the season. But you know,
- 2:46Speaker 5: I want to give a shout out to Trey Gibson
- 2:48Speaker 5: settling in man like keeping them in the ballgame when
- 2:51Speaker 5: it was a bases loaded situation with no one out,
- 2:55Speaker 5: you thought the Dodgers were really going to blow open
- 2:57Speaker 5: that game. I know we've talked a lot to his
- 3:00Speaker 5: last couple starts, the lack of swing and mess. Well
- 3:03Speaker 5: he was throwing that death ball. He threw ten out
- 3:06Speaker 5: of the next thirteen pitches to strike out the side
- 3:09Speaker 5: get out.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Of that inning unscathed.
- 3:11Speaker 5: And I know the offense is the headline from today,
- 3:14Speaker 5: but I thought Brandon Young was very strong as well,
- 3:18Speaker 5: getting a lot of shut down innings, getting back into
- 3:22Speaker 5: the dugout and then letting his offense work.
- 3:24Speaker 4: It was the starting pitching. They were the big story
- 3:27Speaker 4: for me this series.
- 3:30Speaker 1: The starting pitching this series pitched to an ERA of
- 3:33Speaker 1: two twelve against the best team and the best hitting
- 3:37Speaker 1: team in Major League Baseball. That's Trey Gibson, Trevor Rodgers,
- 3:41Speaker 1: and Brandon Young forour and run seventeen innings three games.
- 3:45Speaker 1: And here's that stat again. It's quite remarkable. The Dodgers
- 3:49Speaker 1: had followed their last nine losses with a win. Now
- 3:52Speaker 1: they had two straight losses for the first time since
- 3:55Speaker 1: May eleventh and twelfth. They were streaking big time coming
- 3:58Speaker 1: into this series. Were a nine run that's seven thirty baseball.
- 4:03Speaker 1: They had just swept the Rays. They were beating everybody,
- 4:06Speaker 1: and the Orioles beat them after a brutal loss on
- 4:10Speaker 1: Friday night. Now, one thing I've learned covering baseball over
- 4:13Speaker 1: many years, Guys and Brad, you probably know this as
- 4:16Speaker 1: well as any of us fans would be surprised when
- 4:19Speaker 1: a team has a brutal loss. Sometimes you walk in
- 4:22Speaker 1: the clubhouse the next day and it doesn't seem like
- 4:25Speaker 1: the players even know it happened. And I expect to
- 4:28Speaker 1: see guys down or dragging or moping or still ticked off,
- 4:32Speaker 1: and the opposite, they're in a good mood, they're chirping whatever.
- 4:36Speaker 1: And the same happens after big wins. They're not still
- 4:40Speaker 1: boasting about Friday night on Saturday at six o'clock. Maybe
- 4:44Speaker 1: that's the mentality that happened this weekend.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a beauty of baseball. You know, there's a
- 4:50Speaker 2: game every single day. When you get into the middle
- 4:53Speaker 2: of the season, there's not many off days to sit
- 4:55Speaker 2: there and think about it. So, yeah, after Friday night,
- 4:57Speaker 2: I'm sure everybody went home and they were kind of
- 4:59Speaker 2: just bummed, you know, that that was a game they
- 5:01Speaker 2: should and they have to win if they want to
- 5:03Speaker 2: get back into this playoff picture.
- 5:05Speaker 3: You blow that.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Game, you think the next day they're going to come
- 5:07Speaker 2: out hanging their heads a little bit. And they came
- 5:09Speaker 2: out and they played a great game. I thought yesterday
- 5:11Speaker 2: was one of their better all round games that they've had. Yeah,
- 5:13Speaker 2: they didn't score a lot, but they scored it when
- 5:16Speaker 2: they had to, and it's just that was winning baseball.
- 5:19Speaker 3: And then to carry that over into today.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Which has been one of their biggest problems I feel like,
- 5:23Speaker 2: is carrying big wins and yeah, the ninth inn he
- 5:26Speaker 2: was a little sketchy there, but they got that win
- 5:28Speaker 2: after losing that game Friday, and they come out today
- 5:31Speaker 2: and they just banged the ball around. And I agree
- 5:33Speaker 2: with you, Tim, I think today Brandy Young didn't have
- 5:36Speaker 2: his best stuff, but he battled through five innings and
- 5:38Speaker 2: that's really all you can ask for is to get
- 5:41Speaker 2: through five innings there, keep the score where it wasn't
- 5:43Speaker 2: allow the offense to do what it did.
- 5:46Speaker 5: Steve, you gave this that was it a two to
- 5:48Speaker 5: one two era the starting rotation. That's one of, if
- 5:51Speaker 5: not the best offense in baseball.
- 5:53Speaker 4: And to do it on the road.
- 5:55Speaker 5: And we talked ad nauseam about this team and their
- 5:58Speaker 5: struggles away from home, the ching staff giving up two
- 6:02Speaker 5: more runs on the road compared to Camden Yards. But
- 6:06Speaker 5: I thought it was interesting hearing Jim Palmer talk about
- 6:10Speaker 5: it the day. One mentality that Craig Alban has has
- 6:14Speaker 5: been preaching and he was saying, well, you know, that's
- 6:16Speaker 5: all fine and well. On every team they kind of
- 6:19Speaker 5: have a slogan, but they did embody that over this weekend.
- 6:23Speaker 5: And quite frankly, there's been a lot of instances this
- 6:26Speaker 5: year where gosh, they have serious gup punch losses. I mean,
- 6:31Speaker 5: go back to the Rays series at the Trap where
- 6:34Speaker 5: they got swept and then that's what led them into
- 6:37Speaker 5: that seven and three home stand. So they've had these
- 6:41Speaker 5: type of moments, but now it's about sustaining it because
- 6:44Speaker 5: this Dodger series it's massive.
- 6:47Speaker 4: But if you lose the.
- 6:48Speaker 5: Series to the Angels upcoming, then it really puts a
- 6:52Speaker 5: huge damper on what you just did this weekend exactly.
- 6:57Speaker 1: But what they did this weekend has put themselves now
- 6:59Speaker 1: in position to have a winning road trip. I had
- 7:02Speaker 1: fans telling me a couple of days ago this is
- 7:03Speaker 1: going to be one in eight. Now could be five
- 7:06Speaker 1: and four or better if they win a series in Anaheim,
- 7:09Speaker 1: which they're obviously capable. If they beat the Dodgers, they
- 7:11Speaker 1: can beat the Angels. And also, some fans might be
- 7:14Speaker 1: watching this saying, they scored twelve runs. Whyren't you guys
- 7:16Speaker 1: talking about that. Here's why. Here's why. The Dodgers scored
- 7:20Speaker 1: nine runs this weekend. The last two games, the Dodgers
- 7:23Speaker 1: scored three runs. They have the best offense in baseball.
- 7:27Speaker 1: They're playing at home in front of fifty thousand people
- 7:30Speaker 1: and Furthermore, let me add the caveat to top it off.
- 7:33Speaker 1: The Orioles just went into Dodger Stadium and won a
- 7:35Speaker 1: series starting two home grown rookie pitchers I would say
- 7:42Speaker 1: drafted and developed, But neither Brandon Young or Trey Rodgers
- 7:46Speaker 1: got drafted. They were signed after the draft when no
- 7:50Speaker 1: one took them and any team could have and this
- 7:53Speaker 1: one got them and then developed them from the bottom
- 7:56Speaker 1: to the top and they just pitch good games against Now.
- 8:00Speaker 1: I find that remarkable, and guys we've been hearing for years,
- 8:04Speaker 1: can the Orioles develop pitching? And again, I'm not over
- 8:07Speaker 1: hyping it or overselling it, but I think these two
- 8:10Speaker 1: young men are showing they got some potential here.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Yeah, it's exciting to see anytime you can have a
- 8:15Speaker 2: guy starting the minor leagues with the team come up
- 8:18Speaker 2: and actually give something to his team that picked him
- 8:22Speaker 2: up or drafted him, it's exciting, And especially when it
- 8:24Speaker 2: comes to starting pitching, which is really tough to develop
- 8:26Speaker 2: and really tough to keep healthy. They've had these two
- 8:29Speaker 2: guys step up with all the guys they've had hurt
- 8:31Speaker 2: and now they're getting them wins. Brandy Young, I think
- 8:34Speaker 2: was it thirteen out of fourteen or fifteen out of
- 8:36Speaker 2: sixteen something crazy, right Now, The team just wins when
- 8:39Speaker 2: he pitches, and he puts them in a good spot
- 8:41Speaker 2: every time he's out there.
- 8:42Speaker 5: Yeah, ten and two, Brad, ten and two when he
- 8:44Speaker 5: starts games this year, which is fantastic, that's unbelievable.
- 8:48Speaker 4: But you know, the last episode that we did.
- 8:51Speaker 5: I think was Thursday after the game and we're previoing, like,
- 8:54Speaker 5: oh my gosh, Trey Gibson, Like, this is his second
- 8:58Speaker 5: road start.
- 8:59Speaker 4: His first one was a Yankee Stadium.
- 9:01Speaker 5: This one Dodgers Stadium, Friday night, fifty thousand fans, and
- 9:06Speaker 5: it couldn't have got off the more of a rough
- 9:08Speaker 5: and rocky start for him, where nine of the first
- 9:11Speaker 5: fifteen batters ended up reaching, but he was able to
- 9:15Speaker 5: keep them in the ballgame.
- 9:17Speaker 4: Steve, Like that was the biggest thing.
- 9:19Speaker 5: And that's something that continues to impress me about Trey
- 9:23Speaker 5: Gibson is the moment doesn't look too big when it's
- 9:26Speaker 5: bases loaded, nobody out in that third inning. That game
- 9:30Speaker 5: could have easily have went sideways, but he was able
- 9:32Speaker 5: to bear down and keep them in the ballgame.
- 9:38Speaker 1: A friend of mine called me Saturday morning as I'm
- 9:41Speaker 1: driving to Frederick to do some minor league interviews. And
- 9:43Speaker 1: I had a great time at Harry Grove Stadium, which
- 9:46Speaker 1: was packed last night. That was really a cool atmosphere.
- 9:49Speaker 1: So anyway, we were both not in a great mood
- 9:55Speaker 1: after that game Friday night. Now in and I said
- 9:58Speaker 1: to him, here's the silver lining. A kid pitcher may
- 10:01Speaker 1: have found himself in that game. It looked like Trey
- 10:05Speaker 1: Gibson finally said and Drew French finally said to him,
- 10:08Speaker 1: it's time to go to your best pitch. We've waited
- 10:12Speaker 1: long enough unleash the death ball. And that thing was
- 10:16Speaker 1: breaking down in the zone so much that Dodgers could
- 10:19Speaker 1: not sniff it. So I was impressed with that. Now
- 10:23Speaker 1: he turned it around. I'm very curious to see where
- 10:27Speaker 1: it goes from here because that is and Brad Will,
- 10:30Speaker 1: you'll know this better than all of us here. That's
- 10:32Speaker 1: kind of an outpitch and when you're one and two.
- 10:35Speaker 1: But I think Trey said, I just got to start
- 10:37Speaker 1: firing that thing all times in the count.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Yeah, And I think when you look back to Brandy Young,
- 10:43Speaker 2: I think it's been about two months ago when they
- 10:44Speaker 2: were in Miami, he found himself in a similar spot
- 10:47Speaker 2: where guys are on base, there's a lot of traffic,
- 10:49Speaker 2: and he just found his fastball. And look at what
- 10:52Speaker 2: he's done since that start of Miami. I mean, he's
- 10:54Speaker 2: been by far their best starting pitcher for the last
- 10:57Speaker 2: two months now, and it was just finding that confidence.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Finding the pitch you can go to is such an
- 11:02Speaker 2: awesome thing as a rookie because you try to do
- 11:06Speaker 2: all these other things. You look at the game plan,
- 11:07Speaker 2: you try to pitch the scatting reports. At the end
- 11:09Speaker 2: of the day. If you the pitch that's unhittable or
- 11:13Speaker 2: pitch that can get you out of jams at any point,
- 11:15Speaker 2: go to that pitch.
- 11:16Speaker 3: Forget about the scouting report.
- 11:17Speaker 2: You've got to learn how to pitch on the fly sometimes,
- 11:20Speaker 2: especially as a rookie, it's really tough. If you found
- 11:22Speaker 2: a pitch that's going to get you out, throw that thing.
- 11:25Speaker 2: And I think he figured it out the other night
- 11:26Speaker 2: that I maybe need to go to this a little
- 11:28Speaker 2: bit sooner. I might need to use them more often.
- 11:30Speaker 2: We'll see his next start, but maybe he found something
- 11:32Speaker 2: and he goes on a roll, just like Brandon Young
- 11:34Speaker 2: has the last Like I said, it's been seven or
- 11:36Speaker 2: eight starts. I think since Miami it's just been he's
- 11:38Speaker 2: going to his fastball, found that it really plays really well.
- 11:41Speaker 3: And now we found that splitter and look at him.
- 11:43Speaker 2: He's one of the best starters, I feel like in
- 11:45Speaker 2: the American League the last two months.
- 11:48Speaker 5: And it's phenomenal what Brandon Young and Trey Gibson did.
- 11:51Speaker 5: The brad at I think Trevor Rodgers like, now, this
- 11:56Speaker 5: is five starts now for him and that easily the
- 11:59Speaker 5: best start that we've seen out of him this season.
- 12:02Speaker 5: Just retired twenty of the twenty three batters that he
- 12:06Speaker 5: ended up facing. The fastball was massive and obviously the
- 12:11Speaker 5: velocity was up for.
- 12:12Speaker 4: Him a ton there.
- 12:14Speaker 5: He's gotta be feeling great about himself after that one,
- 12:17Speaker 5: especially with Yoshinobo Yamamotos starting for the Dodgers and how
- 12:21Speaker 5: dominant he's been in ben especially of late, but Rogers
- 12:26Speaker 5: outdueled him.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Yeah, and there's something about Dodger Stadium. You just you
- 12:30Speaker 2: get up for those games. It's a major League game.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Every stadium is cool to playing, but there's something a
- 12:34Speaker 2: little different about a Saturday night in Dodgers Stadium. And
- 12:37Speaker 2: he could go the other way too, you could be
- 12:38Speaker 2: too pumped up and give up all these runs. But
- 12:40Speaker 2: to me, I just he looked super confident last night,
- 12:43Speaker 2: and I think that's kind of what we wanted to see,
- 12:45Speaker 2: and I think that was the next step. And yes,
- 12:47Speaker 2: he's had these good outings, but it always came down
- 12:49Speaker 2: to one pitch or one inning where it kind of
- 12:52Speaker 2: fell apart.
- 12:52Speaker 3: Last night, that was not gonna happen.
- 12:54Speaker 2: If his pitch count was down, I would have let
- 12:56Speaker 2: him ride to the ninth inning because he was just
- 12:59Speaker 2: super confident, just super aggressive in the zone, and he
- 13:03Speaker 2: had their hitters on their heels from pitch one in
- 13:05Speaker 2: that game. I mean, it was a here it is,
- 13:08Speaker 2: hit me fastball. His location was good with it, but
- 13:11Speaker 2: I mean at times it was just here it is,
- 13:13Speaker 2: see if you can hit it, and they were just
- 13:15Speaker 2: taking it or they were taking bad swings on it.
- 13:17Speaker 2: And then he was able to go to all of
- 13:18Speaker 2: his other off speed and he just looked really, really
- 13:20Speaker 2: good last night.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Two words with a calm in the middle baseball man.
- 13:27Speaker 1: What a weekend. Maybe the biggest down of the year
- 13:30Speaker 1: followed by maybe the biggest up of the year for
- 13:33Speaker 1: the Orioles. Crammed into three days in about forty eight hours.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Chavez Ravine, that was something so hopefully our show matched
- 13:42Speaker 1: the fun of the weekend here at the start. But
- 13:44Speaker 1: we're just getting going here and a lot more to
- 13:47Speaker 1: do as we roll on here on the Birdland Territory. Hey,
- 13:56Speaker 1: it's time for Daily Dingers presented by Fandel And as
- 13:59Speaker 1: we kind of look ahead to the series in Anaheim,
- 14:04Speaker 1: maybe Taylor Ward is a guy to watch to see
- 14:07Speaker 1: if he can hit one out in the park. He's
- 14:09Speaker 1: very familiar with right he played there for all those
- 14:12Speaker 1: years till the trade to the Oriols. He hit one today.
- 14:15Speaker 1: The Oils hit four homers today. And here's what I'll say, guys.
- 14:20Speaker 1: We keep comparing Taylor Ward's low homer total to thirty
- 14:24Speaker 1: six last year, and that's he did hit thirty six
- 14:26Speaker 1: last year, but from twenty two through twenty five with
- 14:29Speaker 1: the Angels, he averaged about twenty five, So thirty six
- 14:33Speaker 1: was top end for him. May not be duplicated, but
- 14:37Speaker 1: he's gonna He's still even this year he could get
- 14:39Speaker 1: his twenty five, so that's still within reach if he
- 14:42Speaker 1: starts to hit some guys, and I you know this
- 14:45Speaker 1: guy at seven nine two ops last year. We know this.
- 14:47Speaker 1: The plate discipline stats have been exceptional, but maybe he's
- 14:51Speaker 1: finally going to start to show some of the pop two.
- 14:55Speaker 3: Yeah, I think so.
- 14:56Speaker 2: I think he's been taking way better swings here recently,
- 14:58Speaker 2: and I think he's driving the ball the other way,
- 15:00Speaker 2: which is gonna make pictures start coming in.
- 15:03Speaker 3: And I feel like that's where his most of his
- 15:04Speaker 3: powers to the pool side.
- 15:06Speaker 2: So you start taking those hits and those doubles and
- 15:08Speaker 2: homers even the other way, you're gonna start getting pitched
- 15:11Speaker 2: in more. And I think that's when he'll be able
- 15:12Speaker 2: to start driving it. And like we've talked about multiple times,
- 15:15Speaker 2: it's going to start getting hot at Candy Yard and
- 15:17Speaker 2: the ball starts to absolutely fly.
- 15:18Speaker 3: So it's a it's a good time to start finding
- 15:20Speaker 3: your swing.
- 15:21Speaker 2: And hopefully when he goes back to Los Angeles Anaheim
- 15:24Speaker 2: that he finds his old swing again. I'll see some
- 15:26Speaker 2: old teammates. It's always fun facing your you know, your
- 15:29Speaker 2: old team for the first time. So he'll go there,
- 15:31Speaker 2: he'll have some good thoughts, and when he gets there,
- 15:33Speaker 2: maybe he'll get locked in again and start coming back
- 15:35Speaker 2: home to Baltimore and start driving the ball again.
- 15:38Speaker 5: Yeah, it was great to see him go yard today
- 15:41Speaker 5: and that ball just kept carrying, carrying and then just
- 15:43Speaker 5: got out. But something that I've noticed of late guys,
- 15:47Speaker 5: and I want to say mass and flash to graphic
- 15:50Speaker 5: in one of the recent games that they've had, he's
- 15:54Speaker 5: being more aggressive early on in the count, which I
- 15:58Speaker 5: think is a good thing because we've talked at times,
- 16:01Speaker 5: you know, over the past month or two where maybe
- 16:04Speaker 5: he's patient to a fault at some point, and it's
- 16:06Speaker 5: great to walk, it's great to get on base, but
- 16:10Speaker 5: this is someone that can.
- 16:11Speaker 4: Do damage with his bat.
- 16:12Speaker 5: And Steve not only just the fact hitting home runs,
- 16:16Speaker 5: it was the fact that he had over one hundred
- 16:18Speaker 5: RBIs last year that was really really impressive, and he
- 16:22Speaker 5: only had twenty, only had twenty heading into today's game.
- 16:26Speaker 4: Of course he had the solo shot.
- 16:28Speaker 5: But that's something that I want to see more from
- 16:31Speaker 5: Taylor Ward driving in runs.
- 16:34Speaker 1: He's got fifty five career homers in three hundred and
- 16:36Speaker 1: forty eight games at Angels Stadium, so that's about two
- 16:39Speaker 1: full years, about twenty seven, So he's hit some long balls.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Ten point five war he had in his four years
- 16:46Speaker 1: with the Angels, his last four anyway, twenty two through
- 16:48Speaker 1: twenty five, and Tim, to your point, I asked him
- 16:50Speaker 1: that question earlier this season, do you ever want to
- 16:53Speaker 1: ambush the count and you know, jump grab that first pitch?
- 16:57Speaker 1: And he said to me, it's a pitcher by pitcher situation,
- 17:00Speaker 1: and this the guy keeps extensive notes, scouting notes on
- 17:03Speaker 1: opponent pitchers and really does his homework going into his start.
- 17:07Speaker 1: And I think he kind of premeditates that all this,
- 17:10Speaker 1: although maybe now maybe he shouldn't. Maybe he should surprise
- 17:13Speaker 1: some people because the real ambush is supposed to be surprised, right.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Didn't think this guy would get that pitch and he
- 17:18Speaker 1: went for it. So we'll see how he does in
- 17:20Speaker 1: this series. Homecoming of sorts for Taylor Ward at Anaheim,

- 17:55Speaker 1: Speaking of offense, it was great to see for Homer
- 17:57Speaker 1: Sunday by the Birds at Dodger Stadium. Peter Linzo a
- 18:01Speaker 1: three run shot. Ben he loves hitting it to ballpark,
- 18:03Speaker 1: showed it again. He's got eighteen now, so forty is
- 18:07Speaker 1: gonna be within reach for this guy. The math now
- 18:09Speaker 1: says he could get it, and it's great to see.
- 18:12Speaker 1: And Sokowser against the lefty, he had a big day,
- 18:15Speaker 1: so a lot of good signs won the offense too
- 18:18Speaker 1: for the Orioles.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean Colon Cowser to me has just been
- 18:22Speaker 2: He's taken leaves and bounds these last six weeks. I'd say,
- 18:25Speaker 2: just really finding his swing. And I think it's more
- 18:28Speaker 2: about pitch recognition more than even his swinging his mechanics.
- 18:31Speaker 2: He's just he's laying off those pitches that earlier in
- 18:34Speaker 2: the season he was just waving at and taking bad
- 18:36Speaker 2: swings at. So I think it's just more getting in
- 18:38Speaker 2: favorable counts and he's done a great job driving the ball.
- 18:41Speaker 2: We know that he's got superpower, so if you could
- 18:43Speaker 2: just get the back to the ball, you never know
- 18:45Speaker 2: how many home runs he can hit. And obviously today
- 18:47Speaker 2: Blaze Alexander to me is just continues to just scorch
- 18:51Speaker 2: the ball. It's unbelievable what he's done these last I
- 18:54Speaker 2: guess it's over a month now, I mean his last
- 18:55Speaker 2: thirty games, he's got close to one thousand ops and
- 18:58Speaker 2: it's not it's almost to the point.
- 18:59Speaker 3: Now where do you move.
- 19:01Speaker 2: Him up in the lineup or do they think that
- 19:02Speaker 2: he's hitting so well because he's hitting the eighth spot.
- 19:05Speaker 3: To me, I feel like he's got to move off RN.
- 19:08Speaker 5: We've had that conversation on the fan over the past week,
- 19:11Speaker 5: and Steve, I know you guys have asked Craig albern
- 19:14Speaker 5: Has about it.
- 19:14Speaker 4: Pregame, I would move him up.
- 19:18Speaker 5: I get while he's down on and you can say, okay,
- 19:20Speaker 5: you can turn over the lineup. But it's been since
- 19:23Speaker 5: May first, he's really taken off and leads the majors
- 19:26Speaker 5: in batting average. But it's even more ridiculous when you
- 19:29Speaker 5: go back to May twenty fifth, he's got a four
- 19:31Speaker 5: to forty.
- 19:32Speaker 4: Six pat amverage.
- 19:33Speaker 5: He's got an ops of nearly twelve hundred and his
- 19:38Speaker 5: numbers with runners in scoring position are amazing. I just
- 19:42Speaker 5: think given his athleticism and the fact that, hey, he
- 19:46Speaker 5: can lay down a bun, he can steal a base,
- 19:50Speaker 5: I would not mind putting him in the leadoff spot,
- 19:53Speaker 5: especially put him in the leadoff spot, drop Taylor Ward
- 19:56Speaker 5: to two. Gunner, you could drop him a bit, And
- 19:59Speaker 5: that doesn't have to be for the rest of the season,
- 20:01Speaker 5: because look, we all hope and expect Gunner to really
- 20:04Speaker 5: heat up soon. But I think with how Blaze is
- 20:08Speaker 5: swinging it right now, I'm all for moving him up.
- 20:13Speaker 1: I think you might like having that down in the order,
- 20:17Speaker 1: that ability to break a game open or be productive there.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Although there might be that day where the game ends
- 20:24Speaker 1: with the seventh batter and Blazes on deck and you go, man,
- 20:27Speaker 1: wish Blaze had gotten a swing there where the base
- 20:29Speaker 1: is loaded. So there's obviously arguments for each, But right
- 20:33Speaker 1: now he's kind of played his way into being a
- 20:35Speaker 1: regular on this team. It's seemingly taking more at bats
- 20:38Speaker 1: against from Kobe, But then you had the little issue.
- 20:42Speaker 1: It seems like Jackson Owley's probably going to be fine,
- 20:44Speaker 1: but the rest of them today, it's just I mean,
- 20:47Speaker 1: he's fitting super utility. They want to stick him in
- 20:49Speaker 1: the outfield. Okay, it's not his comfort zone, but he
- 20:52Speaker 1: can do it, and it's hard to keep him out
- 20:54Speaker 1: of a lineup right now.
- 20:57Speaker 2: Yeah, And I mean even look at when he got
- 20:58Speaker 2: the start at shortstop the other day. It's like, give
- 21:01Speaker 2: you're able to give Gunner a day off his feed.
- 21:02Speaker 2: It's like, how many guys in the major leagues can
- 21:05Speaker 2: you confidently put out there? And then he's producing on
- 21:07Speaker 2: the offensive side, so it's not like you're just trying
- 21:10Speaker 2: to get his bat in there. He's playing shortstop at
- 21:12Speaker 2: a high level. I feel like anywhere on the infield
- 21:14Speaker 2: he plays phenomenal. And like you said, Steve, he's not
- 21:17Speaker 2: the most comfortable in the outfield, but he's definitely serviceable.
- 21:19Speaker 2: I'd say, almost anywhere across the outfield. What a trade
- 21:23Speaker 2: to make for Blaze and he's just doing a great
- 21:26Speaker 2: job all around.
- 21:29Speaker 5: Fantastic trade. And you can really shout out the whole
- 21:31Speaker 5: bottom third of the lineup. Guys are really extended to
- 21:34Speaker 5: six through nine. They were eight for twenty with five
- 21:40Speaker 5: extra base hits in that ball game. Obviously, Cowser and
- 21:44Speaker 5: Blaze both had three hit games, but Tavaris had the triple.
- 21:47Speaker 5: Jeremiah Jackson, who look and he's played very sparingly of late,
- 21:52Speaker 5: but it seems like when he has played, he's at
- 21:55Speaker 5: least still shown the ability to hit like he did
- 21:57Speaker 5: at the beginning of the season. Six through nine came
- 22:01Speaker 5: through in a big, big way for the Orioles.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Today, the Orioles won the series in Dodger Stadium after
- 22:08Speaker 1: the brutal loss of Friday Night. They outscored the Dodgers
- 22:10Speaker 1: twenty to nine this weekend. Now they head to Anaheim
- 22:14Speaker 1: with some momentum three and three on this trip after
- 22:17Speaker 1: not scoring much in Seattle and really not scoring much
- 22:20Speaker 1: of our few games in Los Angeles. They got twelve
- 22:23Speaker 1: runs in at four homers today. Will we come back?
- 22:25Speaker 1: I want to mention two Orioles who pitched on rehab
- 22:28Speaker 1: today and it went well for both. And I want
- 22:31Speaker 1: to mention a comment Kevin Brown said late in the
- 22:34Speaker 1: game today and get your guys take on it. That's
- 22:37Speaker 1: coming up on Birdland Territory.

- 22:56Speaker 1: Fan so on, have out Simon's Today. Dan Kramer pitched
- 23:02Speaker 1: for Triple A Norfolk and over three and two thirds
- 23:05Speaker 1: allowed two hits in one run sixty six pitches. That's
- 23:09Speaker 1: pretty good, so I mean he may not need four
- 23:11Speaker 1: or five more before they get him back. He was
- 23:13Speaker 1: ninety two point four on his four seam. He got
- 23:16Speaker 1: a lot of swing and miss on the split today
- 23:18Speaker 1: per the statcast data at double AK, Povich pitched as
- 23:22Speaker 1: Chesapeake beat Richmond eight to nothing. That's the best team
- 23:24Speaker 1: in the Eastern League. Richmond and Povich pitched three and
- 23:27Speaker 1: a third scoreless on one hit, forty three pitches. So
- 23:30Speaker 1: that was good to see. Both Povich and Kramer pitched
- 23:33Speaker 1: on Sunday while the Orioles were beating the Dodgers, or
- 23:36Speaker 1: at least a little before that, those guys were on
- 23:38Speaker 1: the mound on the farm, so leading the game today,
- 23:41Speaker 1: the cameras showed Kevin Brown and Jim's doing the telecast.
- 23:46Speaker 1: They showed the dugout. Albernas Is talking to Beasaio. We
- 23:50Speaker 1: all know the history. The last few weeks we've touched
- 23:52Speaker 1: on it on this show, and he wasn't talking about
- 23:54Speaker 1: that specific situation. But what Kevin said, I don't know
- 23:57Speaker 1: if you guys were watching at that specific time. He
- 24:00Speaker 1: talked about every time we show the doug out, Albernas
- 24:03Speaker 1: is chatting up some player in there and having fun
- 24:05Speaker 1: with them. And then Kevin went on to say his take,
- 24:09Speaker 1: Brown's take, Albernas has a great relationship with the players.
- 24:13Speaker 1: Kevin said, the players love playing for this guy, and
- 24:17Speaker 1: just made it sound. And I'm not disagreeing with Kevin,
- 24:22Speaker 1: because he's there more than me, He's closer to it
- 24:25Speaker 1: than I am. But when I'm there at home games,
- 24:27Speaker 1: I see some of this and we can never know
- 24:30Speaker 1: for sure because media is only in there fifty minutes
- 24:33Speaker 1: before the game. That's all we get. We don't know
- 24:36Speaker 1: for real how close these guys are, not close individuals
- 24:39Speaker 1: are with the manager. I'll say this, it looks like
- 24:42Speaker 1: he's built up a good relationship with the clubhouse. It's
- 24:46Speaker 1: not translating into a winning season yet, maybe it will.
- 24:50Speaker 1: What do you guys see? Did you hear Kevin's comment today?
- 24:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I heard him talking about that. It is definitely
- 24:56Speaker 2: I think something you can see. I can just kind
- 24:58Speaker 2: of tell by the way the team collectively talks about
- 25:02Speaker 2: the relationship. There's no there's no anybody who hasn't said
- 25:07Speaker 2: that they don't have a good relationship. So that leads
- 25:09Speaker 2: me to believe that he's wanting to get these know
- 25:11Speaker 2: these guys on a personal level, and I think that
- 25:13Speaker 2: goes a long way.
- 25:14Speaker 3: Especially in a long season.
- 25:16Speaker 2: There's a lot of managers that will kind of not
- 25:18Speaker 2: want to get to know you so personal, and they
- 25:20Speaker 2: kind of want to stay at arms distance because they
- 25:23Speaker 2: know it's a business and things might have to be
- 25:25Speaker 2: done that you don't want to have this this tight
- 25:27Speaker 2: knit relationship, I'd say, because you have to still make
- 25:30Speaker 2: the professional decisions and that can make it tough when
- 25:33Speaker 2: you get the good no guys too well, But it
- 25:35Speaker 2: really does seem like he is He's always constantly talking
- 25:37Speaker 2: to them. I've noticed that for a couple of home runs,
- 25:40Speaker 2: guys coming up and talking to him about the bat
- 25:42Speaker 2: they had, And to me, that shows that these guys
- 25:44Speaker 2: are super comfortable and he wants to hear what they're saying.
- 25:47Speaker 2: He wants to know what they were thinking up there,
- 25:48Speaker 2: what they saw, And to me, that's really what I
- 25:51Speaker 2: what I'm seeing when I watch the broadcast is that
- 25:53Speaker 2: these guys have no problem going up to the manager
- 25:54Speaker 2: talking to him at any point during the game, and
- 25:56Speaker 2: he responds back to them, even though he's watching the
- 25:58Speaker 2: game paying attention. You can tell they had this repertoire
- 26:01Speaker 2: between each other that they're able to talk back and
- 26:04Speaker 2: forth even in the middle of the games.
- 26:07Speaker 5: Yeah, I think this kind of goes back to spring training,
- 26:10Speaker 5: just hearing from some of the players or some of
- 26:11Speaker 5: the broadcasters, you know, beat guys that were down there
- 26:14Speaker 5: in Sarasota, where he does seem to be, you know,
- 26:19Speaker 5: a little bit of a player's manager, but then someone
- 26:21Speaker 5: that could be Stern and he's a younger guy, obviously
- 26:24Speaker 5: rookie manager.
- 26:26Speaker 4: And this is a very tight knit group.
- 26:28Speaker 5: To begin with, talking about the guys inside of that clubhouse,
- 26:31Speaker 5: because the vast majority of them, you know, came up
- 26:34Speaker 5: together and they had that pre existing relationship. So I
- 26:38Speaker 5: would have to think that that was a big priority
- 26:42Speaker 5: when it came to Michael Aason trying to find this
- 26:45Speaker 5: next manager is find someone that can connect with these
- 26:48Speaker 5: young guys, and I definitely think that Craig albn has
- 26:51Speaker 5: has that ability, and you see it on a nightly basis.
- 26:55Speaker 1: It's interesting, and I'll take it a step beyond spring
- 26:58Speaker 1: training Tim. I thinkand caravan, which was even before they
- 27:02Speaker 1: went to Florida, it seemed like this guy had a
- 27:05Speaker 1: pretty good relationship with the players. You watch him joke
- 27:08Speaker 1: and cut up, and they just seemed an ease around him,
- 27:11Speaker 1: and not like walking on eggshells with this new manager.
- 27:14Speaker 1: We don't even know this guy. I gotta be careful
- 27:16Speaker 1: what I say. It seemed like none of that was
- 27:18Speaker 1: true the opposite, And I think he made a lot
- 27:21Speaker 1: of phone calls even if he was didn't see guys
- 27:23Speaker 1: in person to players before he met them in person
- 27:26Speaker 1: at the Birdland Caravan in late January, a couple weeks
- 27:29Speaker 1: before spring training starts. So I think he's done well
- 27:33Speaker 1: in that regard, and as a media guy, I see
- 27:36Speaker 1: confidence in a first year manager whether the decision he
- 27:40Speaker 1: makes is gonna work or not. I think he's convicted.
- 27:44Speaker 1: He's not like treading into the pitching change. He's like,
- 27:47Speaker 1: I want welf Ram now, this is what I'm gonna do,
- 27:50Speaker 1: and I'm gonna go get it. And so I like that,
- 27:54Speaker 1: And I don't know if it'll have long range dividends.
- 27:56Speaker 1: I guess we're gonna see. But it's a long winded
- 28:00Speaker 1: of saying I like this manager, even though right now
- 28:03Speaker 1: today doesn't have a winning record yet.
- 28:06Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think I like his answers after games
- 28:09Speaker 2: when you listen to him talk to the media. If
- 28:11Speaker 2: a media guy asks him, well, what do you think,
- 28:14Speaker 2: he has an answer and it's not like a like,
- 28:16Speaker 2: he's not hesitating. They have a game plan, and I
- 28:18Speaker 2: think he sticks to the game plan and really, whether
- 28:21Speaker 2: win or lose or draw, whatever the case may be,
- 28:25Speaker 2: he's convicted in their plan and if it didn't work
- 28:27Speaker 2: that day, they're going to stick to it and they're
- 28:29Speaker 2: going to continue doing it the next day. And that's
- 28:31Speaker 2: really all you can ask for from a manager. I know,
- 28:33Speaker 2: being down in the bullpen, you want a manager that's
- 28:35Speaker 2: confident in you. You want to know when the phone rings,
- 28:37Speaker 2: you're not surprised. There's not some crazy thing happening every
- 28:40Speaker 2: given day. And you know, like when the game happens
- 28:43Speaker 2: Friday and there's this bow and safe, if hells he
- 28:45Speaker 2: was available, you want to see him back out there
- 28:47Speaker 2: on Saturday. That's that's to me when you're just coming
- 28:50Speaker 2: from a bullpen guy. That's what you want to see,
- 28:52Speaker 2: and that's kind of what I've seen all years. The
- 28:54Speaker 2: guys that that are his guys, are the guys that
- 28:56Speaker 2: are going to be in there in the biggest spots,
- 28:58Speaker 2: and that's really it's consistent. He's stuck to that. Whether
- 29:02Speaker 2: they win or lose, that's besides the story. You really
- 29:05Speaker 2: as a manager, you have to stick to your guns
- 29:07Speaker 2: and really your game plan. And to me, that's what
- 29:09Speaker 2: I see, and I think that's where the confidence comes from,
- 29:11Speaker 2: is his preparation and his game plan that he's been
- 29:14Speaker 2: sicking to so far the season.
- 29:17Speaker 5: And I kind of think back to that introductory press
- 29:20Speaker 5: conference at the warehouse Steve where Steven Vote was there.
- 29:24Speaker 5: You know, the Guardians manager was there at the introductory
- 29:28Speaker 5: press conference. That tells you how much he thought of
- 29:30Speaker 5: Craig Albernaz. And obviously he was votes right hand man
- 29:34Speaker 5: in Cleveland the past couple of years. But this was
- 29:38Speaker 5: a hot name last offseason when talking about the manager cycle,
- 29:43Speaker 5: the hiring cycle, and the Orioles were able to land him.
- 29:47Speaker 1: Before we end the show, if I had a hat,
- 29:50Speaker 1: I tip it right now to your near canal. I
- 29:52Speaker 1: don't think we should forget what he did Saturday night
- 29:56Speaker 1: when that game was a millimeter away from getting away.
- 30:00Speaker 1: And if you think Berdland was on re Friday night,
- 30:03Speaker 1: I can only imagine when we would have seen two
- 30:06Speaker 1: of those. And I believe was Kyle Tucker right. He
- 30:09Speaker 1: struck out with three straight splits and they had a
- 30:12Speaker 1: man on base and they were down by a run,
- 30:14Speaker 1: and that game was about to be blown again. And
- 30:17Speaker 1: then you're near Cano, who's thrown some great splitters this year,
- 30:21Speaker 1: through three great ones, and after he threw the second one,
- 30:24Speaker 1: I'm screaming at the television, please don't throw anything else.
- 30:29Speaker 1: He can't hit it, and he knew that, and Sam
- 30:33Speaker 1: knew that, and he didn't hit it. So man, that
- 30:36Speaker 1: was maybe the biggest out of the year and what
- 30:38Speaker 1: turned out to be a good weekend for the Orioles.
- 30:43Speaker 1: You guys agree, what do you think about those splits?
- 30:45Speaker 2: Yeah, no great splits, And I think I think it's
- 30:47Speaker 2: been great seeing him get back into the role that
- 30:49Speaker 2: he kind of built for himself a couple of years
- 30:52Speaker 2: ago when he was an All Star and had those
- 30:53Speaker 2: back to back amazing seasons. It's been awesome to see
- 30:56Speaker 2: him be able to make the adjustment from the change
- 30:58Speaker 2: up to the splitter, and to me, it just seems
- 31:01Speaker 2: like his confidence is back. He's got his stare down back,
- 31:04Speaker 2: and it's good seeing him have fun out there and
- 31:06Speaker 2: just be back to the guy that they expected to
- 31:08Speaker 2: have last year and it just didn't work out. And
- 31:10Speaker 2: that's what happens in the reliever's life and in their career.
- 31:13Speaker 2: You're gonna have great years, you're gonna have bad years.
- 31:15Speaker 2: It's what do you do after the bad happens. And
- 31:17Speaker 2: he's bounced back in a big way, and he's a
- 31:19Speaker 2: big he's a big arm for them right now. And
- 31:21Speaker 2: who knows at this point, Like if hells he continues
- 31:23Speaker 2: to have his struggles, maybe he near Cano gets a shot.
- 31:26Speaker 2: Because Garcia has kind of come back a little bit.
- 31:28Speaker 2: He's still having a great year, but right now I
- 31:30Speaker 2: think we're trying to find different spots for him. You
- 31:32Speaker 2: might see your near Cano back there out there for
- 31:34Speaker 2: some save opportunities here towards these next couple of weeks.
- 31:37Speaker 2: You just never know, and that's that's always huge. You
- 31:39Speaker 2: have a guy like that you can plug in there
- 31:42Speaker 2: and have that confidence to close out these games late.
- 31:45Speaker 5: Him returning to form is such a massive development for
- 31:49Speaker 5: this team. You could make the case that maybe he's
- 31:52Speaker 5: pitching better right now than he did in his All
- 31:55Speaker 5: Star season in twenty twenty three. Then he dipped a
- 31:57Speaker 5: little in twenty four and guys, he gets sent to
- 32:00Speaker 5: the miners. Last year, they backed off of him big
- 32:03Speaker 5: and you're heading into this year wondering, well, what is
- 32:07Speaker 5: niar Cano? Can you count on your Cano? And he's
- 32:10Speaker 5: been one of their best relievers. He is having a great,
- 32:13Speaker 5: great season.
- 32:14Speaker 1: Yeah, and I was sitting there thinking, this guy's throwing
- 32:17Speaker 1: great splits almost all year. Don't let this one be
- 32:20Speaker 1: up in the zone. Finally, the one he didn't throw well,
- 32:23Speaker 1: but he with the game on the line and the
- 32:26Speaker 1: Orioles teetering big time, he threw three great splits that
- 32:31Speaker 1: were unhittable. They got a big win Saturday, they got
- 32:34Speaker 1: a big win Sunday, and the little momentum, we'll see
- 32:37Speaker 1: what they do with it as they head to Anaheim.
- 32:39Speaker 1: We'll catch up with you and next time on Birdland Territory,
- 32:42Speaker 1: we got Mark Trumbo stopping by before long on Hello Territory,
