Latest / OneLegUpAlex Media / Brian Cashman's Magnificent 7 Acquisitions For the Yanks; Terminello's Take on MLB Trade Deadline 2025 (recorded 7-31-2025)
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Derrett.
- 0:06Speaker 2: All Right, well before tonight's meltdown of the three new
- 0:09Speaker 2: acquisitions of the Yankees Bullpen, I'm talking about Jake Bird
- 0:15Speaker 2: and Ben Nar and well Deval. I want you to
- 0:20Speaker 2: hear how excited I was earlier today when I said
- 0:26Speaker 2: this on my social media accounts, that Cashman I still
- 0:33Speaker 2: believe it cooked this stray deadline.
- 0:37Speaker 1: I gotta say with the move today.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Of Marcus Truman being cut, I gotta also say with
- 0:42Speaker 3: these seven new guys Brian Cashman brought over, including a
- 0:46Speaker 3: well needed reinforcements in the Bullpen, Blanka Duvala, Bennar, Linka Bird,
- 0:52Speaker 3: Cashman is cooking and I'm gonna play Terminoo has taken
- 0:56Speaker 3: a little bit here on the one I got network,
- 0:59Speaker 3: but Cashman is cooking, and I think that's a big news.
- 1:03Speaker 3: I mean, I was just telling Nathan that most likely
- 1:06Speaker 3: we might see a hopen.
- 1:07Speaker 2: We haven't seen since the nineties. They have that formula
- 1:11Speaker 2: to not only.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Come back in the division, but go further than that.
- 1:14Speaker 3: So I'm just the biggest, most hopeful I felt after
- 1:19Speaker 3: a trade deadline in a little while, and of course
- 1:21Speaker 3: last year's acquisition Jazz Chisholm has fit nicely into this
- 1:24Speaker 3: year's Yankee team, and of course he was part of
- 1:26Speaker 3: last year. So the deadline has been very good to
- 1:28Speaker 3: the Yanks the last couple of years.
- 1:30Speaker 1: But this year, this year, I think every.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Yankee event should be hyped up and yes, Irish American
- 1:37Speaker 3: Baseball Society because Ryan McMahon has made a name for
- 1:40Speaker 3: himself in just the first few games as a Yankee's
- 1:44Speaker 3: and he did.
- 1:45Speaker 2: He actually hit the should have been the go ahead
- 1:47Speaker 2: game go ahead hit tonight after vote be tied it
- 1:51Speaker 2: at ten to ten, but the Yanks blew a nine
- 1:54Speaker 2: to four lead. That's the bottom line here, and it's
- 1:58Speaker 2: one of those things that has to be corrected for
- 2:01Speaker 2: the rest of the weekend. But my excitement for these
- 2:03Speaker 2: seven acquisitions, I call them Brian's bunch. Not in there.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Listen to how I was so excited after the trade
- 2:11Speaker 2: deadline yesterday at six o'clock with Lou Terminal. All right, folks,
- 2:16Speaker 2: the Yankees have a bullpen. We love to see it.
- 2:19Speaker 2: We have Jake Bird, we have Doval. The biggest prize
- 2:23Speaker 2: for the Yanks this year this trade, and bednar all
- 2:28Speaker 2: I had to say my reactions feel like it took
- 2:31Speaker 2: a jet to holiday beats the Jet.
- 2:35Speaker 4: Two on to day.
- 2:36Speaker 2: At least for tonight or last night. At this point,
- 2:40Speaker 2: we'll see what the Yanks can do. It's only game
- 2:42Speaker 2: one of the series. I do have a low PTSD
- 2:46Speaker 2: from play homes blowing a six run lead very much
- 2:51Speaker 2: like three pitchers did tonight in place of one. But
- 2:55Speaker 2: I have confidence that it's only game one and everything
- 2:58Speaker 2: will shape together. Maybe I'm a little wild to say
- 3:00Speaker 2: it was the nineties type of bill that we could
- 3:03Speaker 2: be looking at with all these acquisitions, But now here
- 3:07Speaker 2: we go. Lou Terminello, what are your thoughts on all
- 3:10Speaker 2: of this? On Terminello's take, Alex, thank you for having
- 3:15Speaker 2: me as always.
- 3:17Speaker 1: A crazy, crazy trade deadline day. I don't remember a
- 3:21Speaker 1: trade deadline day like this maybe ever.
- 3:27Speaker 4: It really separated the haves from the have nots. And
- 3:30Speaker 4: I don't mean financially the teams with a lot of
- 3:33Speaker 4: money and the teams not that aren't as a well
- 3:36Speaker 4: healed as others. But as far as contenders from now pretenders,
- 3:41Speaker 4: we now really there's really a line of demarcation between
- 3:45Speaker 4: the contenders and the pretenders for the rest of the way.
- 3:50Speaker 4: And it was pitching dominated, relief pitching dominated usually. I
- 3:56Speaker 4: mean ten years ago, the trade that propelled the Mets
- 3:59Speaker 4: to the World Series was getting Cespitus, and there was
- 4:04Speaker 4: nothing like that in this trade scenario. It was all
- 4:08Speaker 4: about pitching, pitching, and more pitching, because the state of
- 4:12Speaker 4: pitching in the major leagues in twenty twenty five is it's.
- 4:17Speaker 1: A different animal, It's a different ball game.
- 4:20Speaker 4: The Yankees did a good job getting Bednard, getting Camillo
- 4:26Speaker 4: daval at the deadline, right, it actually came right what
- 4:30Speaker 4: was at.
- 4:31Speaker 2: The eleven hour, right, Yeah, fortifying their bullpen this week
- 4:35Speaker 2: with Greg Risoto, Bryne.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Hellsley and I love Tyler Rodgers.
- 4:42Speaker 4: And then they got Cedric Mullins today, whose last game
- 4:47Speaker 4: as an orio. When I was watching, yes, they made
- 4:49Speaker 4: one of the best catches of the year, showing a
- 4:53Speaker 4: vertical leap going over to center field fence to make
- 4:55Speaker 4: a catch.
- 4:56Speaker 1: I'm not a big Cedric Mullins fan, but I.
- 4:59Speaker 4: Mean, you know, he can't hurt. Let's put it that way.
- 5:03Speaker 4: So it but just goes to show you, Alex, the state.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Of fire today with the Mets, they found their center fielder.
- 5:09Speaker 2: I mean, what was wrong? I mean I thought Tyrone
- 5:11Speaker 2: Taylor is good in centerfield, isn't he.
- 5:13Speaker 4: I mean, no, he's he's he's Gold Glove level center fielder.
- 5:18Speaker 1: But he can't hit, you know. I mean he's seven
- 5:21Speaker 1: for his last seventy.
- 5:22Speaker 4: Three on a team that has a very inconsistent offensive team.
- 5:27Speaker 4: I was hoping the Mets might be able to get
- 5:29Speaker 4: a better hitter, but Alex, there were no better hitters
- 5:32Speaker 4: out there. Forty is now that is is uh what
- 5:38Speaker 4: used to be two seventy is now forty five?
- 5:42Speaker 2: Yeah, no, it really, it really is. I mean I
- 5:46Speaker 2: think why Judge's average of about three fifty is so
- 5:48Speaker 2: remarkable right now, because it is.
- 5:54Speaker 1: So it's a it's a whole different ballgame.
- 5:57Speaker 4: But you know, the Mets and the Yankees fortified their roster,
- 6:00Speaker 4: There's no question about it.
- 6:02Speaker 2: And you know, I mean people don't realize this because
- 6:04Speaker 2: the Angs eventa tail spin out of the division, but
- 6:06Speaker 2: they still have a playoffs hopes. Obviously look crazy to say.
- 6:11Speaker 2: I think for these moves, they still could be division contenders.
- 6:14Speaker 2: I mean, let's faceball, no doubt about it.
- 6:16Speaker 4: I still think they're going to win a division and
- 6:18Speaker 4: I'm surprised Toronto didn't make any major moves today. That
- 6:23Speaker 4: surprised me. But uh uh, it's going to be for
- 6:28Speaker 4: a very interesting six weeks. Okay, so let's look at
- 6:30Speaker 4: this one. For the sake of this little discussion, we'll
- 6:35Speaker 4: say we'll get Toronto the division.
- 6:37Speaker 1: I don't think they're gonna win.
- 6:38Speaker 4: It, but as of today, we'll give them a discussion.
- 6:40Speaker 4: So that's three teams, Toronto, Detroit, Houston they're in. Okay,
- 6:46Speaker 4: so they got five teams left. You got the Yankees, Boston, Seattle, Texas,
- 6:52Speaker 4: and Kansas City's.
- 6:53Speaker 1: On it for free.
- 6:54Speaker 4: I'm keeping them in the They're only three games out,
- 6:57Speaker 4: alex which one which three teams are going to get in?
- 7:01Speaker 1: I have three, I have my three. I think it's
- 7:04Speaker 1: gonna be Yankee, Seattle, and Texas. I think Boston will
- 7:08Speaker 1: just miss.
- 7:09Speaker 2: There were teams.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Yeah, they're a team in transition. They have a lot
- 7:13Speaker 1: of young guys.
- 7:14Speaker 4: I think they'll just miss, and I think next year
- 7:16Speaker 4: they'll become a real contender. And then in the National League,
- 7:22Speaker 4: I think the six teams are are locked in. It
- 7:25Speaker 4: just just a matter if they're going to be division
- 7:27Speaker 4: winners or if they're going to be in that two
- 7:32Speaker 4: out of three wild.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Card scenario, which I hope the Mets can avoid.
- 7:36Speaker 2: And even they're you know, they have division hopes too,
- 7:39Speaker 2: They're very much on the division. But I want to
- 7:41Speaker 2: go back to a couple of teams in the AL
- 7:42Speaker 2: before I move to the NL. The Orioles and the
- 7:46Speaker 2: Twins have me thinking, Wow, they just lost that window.
- 7:49Speaker 2: I mean, they're trading with everybody. It's almost like they
- 7:52Speaker 2: had a window and they couldn't fulfill it. Now they're
- 7:54Speaker 2: just emptying house. I think I heard O'Hearn was traded
- 7:58Speaker 2: as well, or no.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Yes he was, he was. He was traded. He was
- 8:03Speaker 1: traded with Ramon Loreano to the Padres.
- 8:07Speaker 4: The Padres had the best day today, the Padres, I think.
- 8:12Speaker 4: And again these trades were coming at a rapid fire
- 8:17Speaker 4: pace that you really you really almost have to take
- 8:20Speaker 4: a time later on and look back.
- 8:22Speaker 1: But I would say that the Padres won the trade deadline.
- 8:25Speaker 1: They have a chance to win the World Series, Alex,
- 8:27Speaker 1: they're that good.
- 8:28Speaker 4: They're getting getting a JP Sears, a very good left handed,
- 8:32Speaker 4: a solid left handed pitcher in the rotation.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Uh, they didn't trade.
- 8:37Speaker 4: Dylan Cees and getting Mason Miller, who has four years
- 8:42Speaker 4: left in his rookie contract.
- 8:46Speaker 1: That's gonna be great for that's gonna be great for
- 8:48Speaker 1: the Padres.
- 8:49Speaker 2: I see Nest, someone's on me, nasty Nest got traded today.
- 8:54Speaker 4: I believe he got traded to the Pirates, right that
- 8:56Speaker 4: that happened, like in the last five minutes of the
- 8:58Speaker 4: trade the trade deadline, about five to six, he was traded.
- 9:03Speaker 2: And uh, I'm look, I'm just happy, I think. And
- 9:07Speaker 2: then of course we've got talking about Suarez going to
- 9:09Speaker 2: the Mariners. Now, he's gonna be a pain in the
- 9:12Speaker 2: Al this season for sure, especially if the Mariners do
- 9:15Speaker 2: make it. And it's funny because Eugenio, you know, he
- 9:18Speaker 2: got hurt a couple of days ago, and I'm like,
- 9:20Speaker 2: does that decrease his trade stock? But obviously he did not.
- 9:23Speaker 4: Well, if he had broken his hand, he'd still be
- 9:25Speaker 4: on Arizona Diamondbacks. But it wasn't it wasn't that bad
- 9:29Speaker 4: of but that bit of an injury. But Seattle did
- 9:33Speaker 4: a nice job. I mean, the lineup needed some fortification.
- 9:37Speaker 4: And uh, he's not gonna be the offensive player. He's
- 9:41Speaker 4: a very good offensive play, don't get me wrong, but
- 9:44Speaker 4: he's not gonna hit the home runs at the Raid
- 9:46Speaker 4: he did in Arizona in Seattle because Seattle's bullpok is
- 9:50Speaker 4: not a home run hitting bullpop.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Yeah, but we'll see. I mean, the Mariners still have
- 9:54Speaker 2: a great lineup and I think they're gonna go far.
- 9:56Speaker 2: I just Rallies having a magical year and he hasn't
- 10:00Speaker 2: slowed down since the derby. You know who also helped.
- 10:03Speaker 2: The All Star Game helped. I think Schwarberg got helped
- 10:05Speaker 2: by that swing off. He's been hitting a homer since
- 10:08Speaker 2: that All Star Game.
- 10:09Speaker 4: Well, okay, so I think we're going to talk about
- 10:12Speaker 4: the All Star Game today, But since you brought it up,
- 10:15Speaker 4: I didn't watch the All Star Game, and I know
- 10:18Speaker 4: I didn't know anything about the swing off until the
- 10:21Speaker 4: next morning. That is one of the biggest embarrassments in
- 10:25Speaker 4: my sixty plus years as being a baseball fan. And
- 10:29Speaker 4: then I had some I heard some people next day
- 10:31Speaker 4: saying that they should institute to swing off into the
- 10:34Speaker 4: regular season.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Alex, if that happens, it will really test me to
- 10:41Speaker 1: be a diehard baseball fan.
- 10:44Speaker 4: That was that was horrible. I'll just say, even in
- 10:47Speaker 4: a stupid All Star game, that was horrible.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Just my opinion. But again, but getting back to Schwarber.
- 10:57Speaker 4: Schwarber was having a tremendous year and he will be
- 11:00Speaker 4: unrestricted free agent at the end of this year.
- 11:03Speaker 2: And where do you think he goes? Do you think
- 11:04Speaker 2: the Phillies resign him or no?
- 11:07Speaker 4: I would say that the Phillies will have the best
- 11:08Speaker 4: shot of resigning him for sure. I mean they have
- 11:12Speaker 4: a pretty tight knit group. Now they might want to
- 11:15Speaker 4: get younger. The Phillies don't have that not that young
- 11:17Speaker 4: a team. So again, and they have a lot of
- 11:20Speaker 4: money and all. They're one of those teams that could
- 11:23Speaker 4: that can spend.
- 11:25Speaker 1: So we'll see.
- 11:27Speaker 4: But if he wants to come to City Field and
- 11:29Speaker 4: be the Mets d H for a couple of years,
- 11:30Speaker 4: I would have no problem with that.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Oh man, he would be great with that port and say,
- 11:36Speaker 2: but uh, you know, we'll have to see. Now, let
- 11:38Speaker 2: me ask you this, LUI back to today, after it
- 11:44Speaker 2: all shakes up, I still think I was said of
- 11:48Speaker 2: the division, I mean, I feel like, what's your top three?
- 11:50Speaker 2: And then we didn't get to that yet.
- 11:53Speaker 5: Uh.
- 11:53Speaker 4: Well, again, I think I think the six NL teams,
- 11:56Speaker 4: which I did not think would be is we know
- 11:59Speaker 4: this early?
- 12:00Speaker 1: This is just me.
- 12:01Speaker 4: Hey, teams could collapse and somebody might pull a Detroit
- 12:05Speaker 4: like they did last year after Detroit celled off players
- 12:08Speaker 4: and they just got a lot.
- 12:09Speaker 1: But as of today, I.
- 12:10Speaker 4: Think the six playoff teams are in. I think he
- 12:14Speaker 4: got the Mets in the fields. In essential, he got
- 12:18Speaker 4: Chicago and the amazing Milwaukee Brewers, and then you got
- 12:22Speaker 4: Los Angeles and the San Diego Padres.
- 12:25Speaker 1: In the West, I.
- 12:26Speaker 4: Would say Cincinnati is still in it. I don't think
- 12:29Speaker 4: they're going to do it. So I think, uh, I think.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Those it's going to be. We just don't know if
- 12:35Speaker 1: the Mets or the Phillies are going to be the
- 12:37Speaker 1: division winner.
- 12:38Speaker 4: We don't know if the if the Cubs or the
- 12:40Speaker 4: Brewers are going to be a division winner or a
- 12:41Speaker 4: wildcard team. And San Diego was three games behind the Dodgers,
- 12:45Speaker 4: but I think with their acquisitions today and even before
- 12:49Speaker 4: these acquisitions, they were still in it uh to be
- 12:51Speaker 4: a potential division winner.
- 12:54Speaker 1: So but I think the six teams are.
- 12:55Speaker 4: Are set, and I think that I think the Dodgers
- 12:57Speaker 4: will win the division obviously. So all it's all about
- 13:03Speaker 4: staying healthy and avoiding long slumps.
- 13:08Speaker 1: And again we've talked about this early.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Well look at that Tiger team. I mean, they're nine
- 13:12Speaker 2: games up and they've been slumping heavily, but because divisions
- 13:16Speaker 2: like that, you wouldn't know that unless you're really following
- 13:18Speaker 2: the day to day action.
- 13:20Speaker 1: They lost twelve out of thirteen games, which in.
- 13:22Speaker 4: Most in most divisions will kill the team that had
- 13:25Speaker 4: lost to twelve out of thirteen games. There's still nine
- 13:27Speaker 4: nine and a half games in front. Because the americanly
- 13:30Speaker 4: Central is.
- 13:31Speaker 2: So bad and the Indians, sorry, the Guardians really did
- 13:34Speaker 2: not sell and they're going through their own problems right
- 13:37Speaker 2: now with gambling and everything. But I mean they didn't
- 13:40Speaker 2: sell anybody either. That was kind of interesting, right, Yeah.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Everybody had typical leadoff hitter. He can't back third, he
- 13:46Speaker 1: can't buy six.
- 13:47Speaker 4: He has to bat first, and unless there's a trade
- 13:52Speaker 4: that the paperwork is still being done, and you know
- 13:55Speaker 4: sometimes trains are announced after the deadline, you know, working
- 13:58Speaker 4: with the with Major League base fall to make sure
- 14:02Speaker 4: that all.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Of the details are taken care of. But I doubt it.
- 14:06Speaker 1: He's not. He's still on the Indians, excuse me.
- 14:10Speaker 2: On the Guardian Correa though, I gotta talk about this
- 14:13Speaker 2: because I wonder if the Twins were gonna get rid
- 14:17Speaker 2: of get him, get rid of him down the road?
- 14:19Speaker 2: Why m and signed? Like I guess there was a
- 14:21Speaker 2: hope there, But I don't remember a big return like
- 14:24Speaker 2: this in a while. Maybe you know of a guy
- 14:26Speaker 2: that was returning back in a trade deadline.
- 14:28Speaker 4: Well, I was surprised Carlos Krayt went back to Houston
- 14:32Speaker 4: because they said that.
- 14:37Speaker 1: He had a full note trade clause.
- 14:40Speaker 4: And I think the only team he said he would
- 14:41Speaker 4: go back to would be the Astros. I don't know
- 14:45Speaker 4: if the Twins are picking up any of his salary.
- 14:48Speaker 4: We don't have those details as of yet as we
- 14:50Speaker 4: talk here at about six forty with.
- 14:52Speaker 1: The trade deadline just ended. But they need somebody to
- 14:57Speaker 1: play third base.
- 14:58Speaker 4: And no team had the injuries that the Houston Astros
- 15:02Speaker 4: have had, and that they still had their best offensive player,
- 15:06Speaker 4: Jordan Ovarez, and they're still in first place by four
- 15:10Speaker 4: or five games. They've done a remarkable job, by the way,
- 15:16Speaker 4: Next to Cortees traded to the Padres, to the Padres,
- 15:21Speaker 4: not the Pirates.
- 15:24Speaker 1: I just I just that just came across.
- 15:29Speaker 2: I know the rumors. Often the rumors were swirling and
- 15:32Speaker 2: people were like who do I trust? Who do I trust?
- 15:35Speaker 2: I mean with the Yankees, I trusted Jack Curry. The
- 15:37Speaker 2: guy announces on yes all the time, he tweets about them,
- 15:41Speaker 2: he follows them to the te He's the guy who
- 15:44Speaker 2: go to m Brian Hope too.
- 15:45Speaker 1: But I mean, Jack.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Curry is on every day, so why would you trust him?
- 15:49Speaker 2: And I'm very happy that they did not get out
- 15:52Speaker 2: of Bin Rice because look what he did today at
- 15:53Speaker 2: three run home run. There were some rumors he was
- 15:56Speaker 2: floated out there, and I'm glad I didn't go to
- 15:58Speaker 2: Spencer Jones. There was a rumor that he was gonna
- 16:00Speaker 2: be in a trade with Skimes Pirates. I don't know, but.
- 16:04Speaker 6: If the if the Pirates traded schemes already. First of all,
- 16:07Speaker 6: again that talks about them, and that's not for today.
- 16:10Speaker 6: The Major League Baseball still has major problems. I mean saying,
- 16:16Speaker 6: I say, if we were in Pittsburgh and we you're
- 16:18Speaker 6: a Yankee fan, I'm a Met fan. I know you're
- 16:20Speaker 6: a little bit of a Met fan also.
- 16:22Speaker 2: But I want any New York team a serve.
- 16:25Speaker 1: I'm only a Met fan.
- 16:30Speaker 4: But say if we were in Pittsburgh and we were
- 16:32Speaker 4: Pirate fans, and we we drafted this kid number one
- 16:36Speaker 4: overall schemes and we know we're not gonna sign them,
- 16:40Speaker 4: and he's gonna get I bet you, I bet you get.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Schemes in the next two years, gets traded. I bet
- 16:46Speaker 1: you won't even get the year five.
- 16:48Speaker 4: And if and uh, he becomes a free agent after
- 16:51Speaker 4: year six, I bet he doesn't even come close to
- 16:53Speaker 4: year six.
- 16:56Speaker 1: And uh, it's that's a that's a problem with major
- 16:59Speaker 1: legue baseball.
- 17:00Speaker 4: And you saw the incident in the Phillies Doug in
- 17:03Speaker 4: the Phillies clubhouse the other day when Manford I am
- 17:07Speaker 4: going around talking about the upcoming labor situation, apparently, and
- 17:12Speaker 4: I'm no fan of Rob Manfred, I am not, but
- 17:16Speaker 4: he did apparently.
- 17:17Speaker 1: He didn't even bring up a salary cap.
- 17:20Speaker 4: He was just updating the players on on what was
- 17:24Speaker 4: going on. And and for Harper to curse at the
- 17:30Speaker 4: Commissioner of Baseball was totally uncalled for, totally uncalled for.
- 17:36Speaker 1: He could have been disciplined.
- 17:37Speaker 4: I guess he wasn't disciplined because then you have the
- 17:40Speaker 4: problem with the players Association that I don't know.
- 17:43Speaker 2: And probably witnesses would have to step up and say, yeah,
- 17:45Speaker 2: we saw it right, we weren't there no one was
- 17:47Speaker 2: in that room that we I mean, no one that's
- 17:50Speaker 2: on the outside were was in that room. So we
- 17:51Speaker 2: don't know, I mean I don't know.
- 17:53Speaker 4: Well again again, the thing is apparently Commissioner Manford didn't
- 17:59Speaker 4: bring up Sally Recap allegedly at all.
- 18:02Speaker 1: According to one report.
- 18:04Speaker 2: All right, let me, let me, let me talk about this.
- 18:06Speaker 2: I want to talk about this because twenty five years ago,
- 18:11Speaker 2: you know, one of my favorite players in New York
- 18:13Speaker 2: was Joe McEwing. We got Irish heritage back, baby, Ryan McMahon. Now, uh,
- 18:19Speaker 2: I mean, what a what a juice to that lineup.
- 18:23Speaker 2: And it's only been game number four for him at
- 18:26Speaker 2: the Yankees uniform or game number five now today.
- 18:29Speaker 4: Well, Joe McEwing was one of my favorite Mets and
- 18:33Speaker 4: he as you know, he owned the great Randy Johnson,
- 18:37Speaker 4: which is just which makes no sense. And uh, he
- 18:42Speaker 4: almost became he almost became a manager before Mendoza. He
- 18:45Speaker 4: was he was up for the managerial job and he
- 18:48Speaker 4: was also I think up for the managerial job with
- 18:51Speaker 4: the White Sox.
- 18:51Speaker 2: But he was the White Sox manager for a while.
- 18:54Speaker 1: Yeah and uh yeah, and uh that's right. Yeah, and.
- 18:59Speaker 4: Uh, you know he's a folklore Met. Yeah, for sure.
- 19:04Speaker 4: You know he hit how he hit Randy Johnson. So
- 19:11Speaker 4: the Tigers did a nice job. Also, they get getting
- 19:14Speaker 4: Charlie Martin. I mean he's forty one years old, but
- 19:18Speaker 4: the guy can still pitch. I'm surprised the Mets didn't
- 19:22Speaker 4: get a starter. But again, Alex, we're in a different era,
- 19:27Speaker 4: so it must have all these relief pitchers now, so
- 19:30Speaker 4: Ryan Stannik and Reed Garrett, who are pitching in the
- 19:34Speaker 4: seventh and eighth inning because they have added Soto and
- 19:40Speaker 4: Hellsley and Rogers, they can the starting pitchers can go
- 19:45Speaker 4: three and a third or four and a third, and
- 19:48Speaker 4: they could they could put Stannik in. They have six
- 19:51Speaker 4: or seven relief pitches to put in. I don't think
- 19:53Speaker 4: it's an attractive look for Major League Baseball overall because
- 19:56Speaker 4: you saw all the relief pitchers that I mean, fifty
- 20:00Speaker 4: relief pitchers must have got traded today, and uh, I
- 20:05Speaker 4: don't think.
- 20:05Speaker 2: It's in Now there's talk, I mean they want to
- 20:08Speaker 2: move Schlitzler to the bullpen. Look the Yankees, and actually
- 20:13Speaker 2: I actually have seen since the Kershaw three thousand strikeout
- 20:18Speaker 2: pitchers are actually being able to pitch Now I don't
- 20:19Speaker 2: know what it is, but like guys now in more
- 20:21Speaker 2: complete games in my notice before the three thousand game,
- 20:24Speaker 2: maybe these guys are being allowed to pitch a little
- 20:26Speaker 2: bit more inspired like Kershaw.
- 20:28Speaker 1: Well again, I.
- 20:30Speaker 4: Mean the uh, I haven't seen a big increase in
- 20:37Speaker 4: a complete games.
- 20:40Speaker 1: You know.
- 20:42Speaker 4: I just don't know where pitching is going with all
- 20:45Speaker 4: these guys getting hurt, all these all these guys getting
- 20:48Speaker 4: UCL injuries, which well and.
- 20:50Speaker 2: Even yesterday show Hey got taken out in the fourth inning.
- 20:52Speaker 1: I believe, yes he did. Now he had cramping.
- 20:55Speaker 4: He had some kind of cramping, uh, in the lower half,
- 20:59Speaker 4: you know, when.
- 21:00Speaker 2: You know, And Babe, Ruth was such a unicorn I
- 21:02Speaker 2: guess you're say in this way to pitch. He was
- 21:05Speaker 2: a great pitcher in his own right. And then the hit,
- 21:07Speaker 2: the way he did it was pretty incredible.
- 21:10Speaker 1: Alex.
- 21:11Speaker 4: For about forty five years he had the record for
- 21:15Speaker 4: most consecutive schooreless innings in the World Series when he
- 21:18Speaker 4: pitched for the Red Sox.
- 21:20Speaker 1: He was one of a kind.
- 21:21Speaker 4: He's the greatest team sports player of all time in
- 21:25Speaker 4: any sport, all right, lady Jordan, whatever, Babe is the
- 21:29Speaker 4: greatest team the team Sport individual Player.
- 21:33Speaker 2: One hundred oh and Cavalier are also to the Yankees,
- 21:36Speaker 2: so they added a lot of guys and I think
- 21:39Speaker 2: wasn't it was he the guy that was across the
- 21:40Speaker 2: diet like all the goes the first base side after
- 21:43Speaker 2: being traded from the race.
- 21:44Speaker 1: That's kind of that's that's correct, and he will help
- 21:46Speaker 1: the Yankees. He's got good speed.
- 21:49Speaker 4: I don't know why this puts volpi if in heavily criticized,
- 21:54Speaker 4: and I don't know if it's and I think it's
- 21:56Speaker 4: been a little bit much. I don't think he deserves
- 21:59Speaker 4: the critics as heavily as he's gone it. I mean, hey,
- 22:05Speaker 4: the guy basically won a game for them last night, didn't.
- 22:08Speaker 2: Absolutely And he get that great look and both he
- 22:10Speaker 2: has an energy to him that I don't care how
- 22:12Speaker 2: many areas he makes. You need that energy on the team.
- 22:14Speaker 2: There's just no doubt about it. So it'll be fun.
- 22:19Speaker 2: And they did win today. They're actually at sixty wins,
- 22:21Speaker 2: which is pretty good for the end of July. I mean,
- 22:24Speaker 2: it's better than I thought would be at the end
- 22:26Speaker 2: of July. So that's good. And you need to get
- 22:28Speaker 2: to sixty to get to the start to August. All right,
- 22:30Speaker 2: you mentioned commissioners, and I have to ask you this,
- 22:36Speaker 2: with what happened on Monday, the tragedy Monday at the
- 22:38Speaker 2: NFL office, you know, NFL headquarters, do they now really
- 22:43Speaker 2: take CTE a little more serious? I feel like they
- 22:45Speaker 2: haven't done it enough. Is this the moment that they say, Okay,
- 22:48Speaker 2: let's really look into this.
- 22:51Speaker 1: No, a couple of things. The NFL has taken ct seriously.
- 22:56Speaker 4: They have now the tragedy that happened the other night,
- 23:01Speaker 4: This twenty seven year.
- 23:02Speaker 5: Old lunatic lunatic, but we don't know he had if
- 23:08Speaker 5: he had CTA.
- 23:09Speaker 1: Now I'm sure they'll do an autopsy on his brain,
- 23:14Speaker 1: so we don't know if he had CTE. And I
- 23:20Speaker 1: just feel bad for everybody who suffered the other night.
- 23:23Speaker 4: Obviously, the guy people who died, an NFL employee who
- 23:27Speaker 4: worked in the NFL finance department, was shot in the back.
- 23:31Speaker 4: But he was a hero getting leading a lot of
- 23:34Speaker 4: his employees either out of the.
- 23:36Speaker 1: Building or to safety.
- 23:38Speaker 4: I mean, obviously he went to the wrong floor, he
- 23:40Speaker 4: went to the thirty third floor, and unfortunately he killed
- 23:44Speaker 4: innocent bystander. Was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
- 23:48Speaker 4: Because the NFL offices are on floors five to eight.
- 23:51Speaker 4: I don't know how he was able to talk in
- 23:55Speaker 4: that courtyard and nobody saw him, nobody called, and.
- 24:02Speaker 1: They weren't able to subdue him earlier. But that that's
- 24:08Speaker 1: that's just the same situation.
- 24:10Speaker 4: But I do think the end I do think, uh,
- 24:12Speaker 4: the NFL has taken CTE seriously. But Alex, Unfortunately, when
- 24:18Speaker 4: you playellision sport, no matter what they do to try
- 24:24Speaker 4: to make it make it more safe, you're gonna you're
- 24:28Speaker 4: gonna have a players who are gonna suffer CTE.
- 24:32Speaker 1: It's that's just it's just a nature to sport, unfortunately,
- 24:36Speaker 1: and that's a decision you'll That's.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Not to say, you know, I I don't. I don't
- 24:41Speaker 2: agree with parents saying their kid out of football. Feel
- 24:43Speaker 2: like football builds character in a different way than the
- 24:45Speaker 2: other sports does. It also builds toughness. Let's be honest
- 24:48Speaker 2: with that.
- 24:48Speaker 4: No, I think I agree with you, and I think
- 24:51Speaker 4: sports in general, I think playing at athletics in general,
- 24:54Speaker 4: whether you're whether it's a whether you're male or female,
- 24:58Speaker 4: I think bill character makes you makes you.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Not only physically tougher, makes you mentally tougher.
- 25:04Speaker 4: Getting when your coach and you yelled at by a
- 25:08Speaker 4: coach for doing something wrong.
- 25:10Speaker 1: Who's trying to make you better?
- 25:11Speaker 4: Not not dehumanizing you, but try try and make you
- 25:14Speaker 4: a better athlete, whatever sport you're playing.
- 25:16Speaker 1: I think that helps you in everyday life.
- 25:19Speaker 2: I mean, well, look at Michael Jordan was cut from
- 25:22Speaker 2: his high school basketball team. Yeah, and look what he became.
- 25:26Speaker 2: So there are stories like that that changes everything. Well, Lou,
- 25:29Speaker 2: this has been great.
- 25:30Speaker 4: Now.
- 25:30Speaker 2: I know we have a hockey audience. It's kind of
- 25:33Speaker 2: dead at the moment. But but I did hear a story,
- 25:37Speaker 2: sure enough. But someone I met on the l r
- 25:39Speaker 2: C you had like a glass, a seat of the
- 25:42Speaker 2: glass or lower level to watch. Ob I don't know
- 25:45Speaker 2: how true that is, but hey, you know what, the
- 25:47Speaker 2: story is so flowing from that ov goal. People are
- 25:50Speaker 2: still talking about it months later.
- 25:52Speaker 4: Well it was a story goal obviously. But yeah, this
- 25:55Speaker 4: is a dead time for hockey. I mean we're about
- 25:58Speaker 4: six way six weeks away from training. It's gonna be interesting, obviously.
- 26:04Speaker 4: One the season begins for all three New York teams.
- 26:09Speaker 4: And I heard a crazy rumor apparently out of Canada,
- 26:12Speaker 4: about ten days ago when I didn't see it anywhere else,
- 26:15Speaker 4: so I'll.
- 26:15Speaker 1: Just I'll mention it.
- 26:17Speaker 4: But I don't think there's any credence to it that
- 26:20Speaker 4: Doug Hamilton, defenseman, the great defense for the Devils, might
- 26:24Speaker 4: be on the trading block. I don't believe it because
- 26:28Speaker 4: I heard it, but I haven't. I don't think there's
- 26:32Speaker 4: smoked that fire. And you know, obviously, when you look
- 26:37Speaker 4: at you know the Islanders. Will Matthew Barzel betrayed at
- 26:43Speaker 4: the deadline if the Islanders are out of it.
- 26:46Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 26:46Speaker 4: Obviously, he's had some major injuries the last couple of
- 26:49Speaker 4: years and he come to a point of no return
- 26:51Speaker 4: where even though he's an outstanding player, injuries to do
- 26:56Speaker 4: a factory.
- 26:58Speaker 2: By the way, this was the busiest m BE trade
- 27:00Speaker 2: deadline I can remember in a while. I don't remember the.
- 27:03Speaker 1: Big I don't remember being being better.
- 27:06Speaker 4: So we got hockey on basketball talk about as we
- 27:09Speaker 4: as we move on. But about a half hour ago
- 27:12Speaker 4: I did get there was the Knicks did sign the
- 27:15Speaker 4: Bridges four years, one hundred and fifty million dollars.
- 27:19Speaker 1: I was a little surprised. I wasn't sure. I wasn't
- 27:22Speaker 1: totally sure they were going to read they were going
- 27:23Speaker 1: to give me. So the Knicks. The Knicks are setting,
- 27:28Speaker 1: They're they're set in place.
- 27:30Speaker 4: I don't know how much they've improved their team they
- 27:33Speaker 4: are in the Eastern Conference.
- 27:34Speaker 5: We'll have to see, uh you know how much uh
- 27:39Speaker 5: these teams that are up and coming, like Detroit and Orlando,
- 27:42Speaker 5: how they've uh gravitated to the next level.
- 27:46Speaker 1: We'll have to wait and see.
- 27:46Speaker 4: But obviously next year is the next is the next
- 27:50Speaker 4: best chance to get to the NBA finals.
- 27:53Speaker 2: Oh that that's that's a big year and it's another
- 27:55Speaker 2: one of those core years for them. So yeah, well I.
- 27:58Speaker 4: It's it's it's pay for them, is paid for them
- 28:01Speaker 4: to get it. So yeah, but besketball a lot of
- 28:04Speaker 4: people talked about and football down the road obviously.
- 28:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I know that's Malik is dealing with the shoulder
- 28:09Speaker 2: injury there. That's that's I want to.
- 28:11Speaker 1: Worry about it a little.
- 28:13Speaker 2: But we got to talk about the big We gotta
- 28:15Speaker 2: talk about what happened over the weekend. One more one
- 28:17Speaker 2: one other thing because last week Billy Wagner, each year,
- 28:22Speaker 2: ow and of course CC Sabathia all going in and
- 28:26Speaker 2: you know, I loved every one of them mentioned New
- 28:28Speaker 2: York organizations, whether it was CEC of course, with the
- 28:31Speaker 2: Yankees going in as a Yankee each year, mentioning the
- 28:34Speaker 2: Yankee ties, Billy Wagner thanking Willie Randolph and Rick Peterson
- 28:39Speaker 2: during his speech. I thought that was pretty cool because
- 28:41Speaker 2: I watched that whole generation right there. I remember watching
- 28:44Speaker 2: Cliff Floyd catch the game winner and left field catch
- 28:47Speaker 2: the final out to win the NL East in two
- 28:49Speaker 2: thousand and six, and of course David Wright I think
- 28:51Speaker 2: got a home of that game or something like that.
- 28:53Speaker 2: He was a big part of that six UH division win.
- 28:57Speaker 2: And of course Billy Wagner was the closer. Now if
- 29:01Speaker 2: I'm mistaken, I'm not mistaken. I don't believe it was
- 29:03Speaker 2: Wagner that gave up the homer to Yadie or was
- 29:06Speaker 2: it it was Aaron? Yeah, it was Ilmen. And I
- 29:10Speaker 2: think Wagner bitch earlier in the game or something. I
- 29:12Speaker 2: could be wrong, but he definitely made an appearance that night.
- 29:18Speaker 4: Billy the Mets in two thousand and seven. Two thousand
- 29:25Speaker 4: and seven, when the Mets blew that seven game lead
- 29:27Speaker 4: with seventeen to go, Billy Wagner, I believe was injured
- 29:31Speaker 4: the whole month of September, so we didn't play and
- 29:33Speaker 4: that that effect that that definitely affected the mention wing.
- 29:37Speaker 4: I'm sure it was two thousand and seven.
- 29:39Speaker 1: But yeah, no Billy Wagner.
- 29:41Speaker 4: I mean, I'm a tough Hall of Famer greater as
- 29:44Speaker 4: you know, I would not if I had that Hall
- 29:46Speaker 4: of Fame vote, I probably wouldn't vote for Billy Wagner. Sabbathia. Yeah,
- 29:53Speaker 4: excellent picture. I never thought of him as a Hall
- 29:55Speaker 4: of Famer.
- 29:56Speaker 2: But I didn't know he had three thousand strikeouts plus.
- 29:58Speaker 2: That's a pretty good achievement right there. So well, I
- 30:01Speaker 2: mean there's.
- 30:01Speaker 1: A lot of but again, like I said, I'm a
- 30:04Speaker 1: tough grader.
- 30:04Speaker 4: I think Scott Rowland's a Hall of Famer. Now, each
- 30:07Speaker 4: Roll was a Hall of Famer, there's no question about that.
- 30:10Speaker 4: And the late Richie Allen, who I saw his entire career.
- 30:16Speaker 4: I mean, he can rake, and when he was one
- 30:19Speaker 4: of those guys Alex, when he came up to the
- 30:21Speaker 4: plate and he was playing your team, you would just say,
- 30:25Speaker 4: please just keep the ball in the ballpark. That's a
- 30:27Speaker 4: ton offensive player. He was in a pitching dominated era.
- 30:31Speaker 2: Well, I was gonna say one of the other things
- 30:32Speaker 2: about All Star Weekend, by the way, were some of
- 30:34Speaker 2: these guys, I hate to say it, are becoming I
- 30:37Speaker 2: don't say I unrecognizable, but they're getting older. And I'm like,
- 30:39Speaker 2: which player is that. I don't know if you noticed that,
- 30:41Speaker 2: but it's.
- 30:41Speaker 1: Almost like I noticed it. Oh, absolutely I could.
- 30:45Speaker 2: Recognize some of the guys. I hate to say it, but.
- 30:47Speaker 1: And let's not short change the great Dave Parker. He
- 30:50Speaker 1: had almost twenty eight hundred hits.
- 30:53Speaker 2: He was.
- 30:55Speaker 1: An l MVP. He shouldn't know he could have been
- 31:00Speaker 1: in earlier.
- 31:01Speaker 2: Yeah, no, he could have been while he was alive.
- 31:03Speaker 2: But you know, well, at least he knew at least
- 31:07Speaker 2: at least he got in while he was still alive.
- 31:10Speaker 1: That's what he didn't, you know. He didn't have a
- 31:12Speaker 1: chance to make his speech.
- 31:14Speaker 2: And that was emotional too. And by the way, I
- 31:17Speaker 2: don't know if this happened in a while, but a
- 31:18Speaker 2: announcer and a player that were tied to the same
- 31:22Speaker 2: team going at the same time. Uh, Tom Hamilton going
- 31:25Speaker 2: in with The Guardian as a As a Guardians announcer,
- 31:29Speaker 2: I've always loved the way he announces the game.
- 31:31Speaker 4: Well, he loves he loves the Guardians, he loves the
- 31:34Speaker 4: and before that, the Indians.
- 31:37Speaker 1: He's he's outstanding. But he's one of those icons of.
- 31:40Speaker 4: Of baseball broadcasting, one of the great local broadcasters.
- 31:43Speaker 1: And that's why he's in the Hall of Fame.
- 31:45Speaker 2: All right, I want to rally up for three more minutes.
- 31:47Speaker 2: I got if they do, because this was the first
- 31:51Speaker 2: Hall of Fame day where Pete Rose was not banned
- 31:53Speaker 2: from baseball. By the way, that's a big storyline that
- 31:56Speaker 2: don't really talk about. He's not been from baseball. If
- 31:59Speaker 2: they do go ahead and vote him, it does that
- 32:03Speaker 2: open the door for those like a Rod, Bonds and McGuire.
- 32:08Speaker 2: And we could just end that chapter and say, hey,
- 32:10Speaker 2: major League Baseball k new was going on, therefore they
- 32:13Speaker 2: should be in because MLB let it happen.
- 32:17Speaker 1: Alex I agree with you one hundred percent.
- 32:19Speaker 4: If Pete Rose is elected, it does open the door
- 32:23Speaker 4: for the steroid guys.
- 32:25Speaker 1: It does.
- 32:26Speaker 2: That would be only right, That would be only right.
- 32:29Speaker 1: Now.
- 32:30Speaker 4: It's a little bit different because uh uh, betting on
- 32:33Speaker 4: baseball is a cardinal sin in baseball.
- 32:35Speaker 1: We know that.
- 32:36Speaker 2: But as Class A just got suspended for doing that, well,
- 32:40Speaker 2: you know.
- 32:40Speaker 1: What I mean. We could talk. I know, we got
- 32:42Speaker 1: we're coming to the end. We got ninety seconds left
- 32:44Speaker 1: or so.
- 32:45Speaker 4: But the Class A situation is a major problem, and
- 32:50Speaker 4: it's not so much on on the players. Baseball and
- 32:54Speaker 4: all sports have now opened up gambling.
- 32:57Speaker 1: They take millions of dollars.
- 33:02Speaker 4: From fan, duel, from you two bet, from all these
- 33:06Speaker 4: different betting situations.
- 33:08Speaker 1: We said it was gonna happen. It's you called it.
- 33:11Speaker 2: You called it. And by the way, who was the
- 33:13Speaker 2: first MOLB team to open a sports book? The Cincinnati Rids, which.
- 33:17Speaker 1: Is yeah, which is which is hilarious, It really.
- 33:20Speaker 2: Is, especially because Rose besides his addiction, he did have
- 33:23Speaker 2: an addiction there. What a player and I never had
- 33:27Speaker 2: to watch him play, but what a player. Alrighty, lou Terminola.
- 33:30Speaker 2: Before we wrap up tonight, we have to honor the
- 33:32Speaker 2: late Now. I can't believe I'm saying late Ryan Samberg.
- 33:35Speaker 2: I mean, he's only sixty five and he had dealt
- 33:38Speaker 2: long and hard and fought hard with his cancer. But Lou,
- 33:42Speaker 2: as we remember Rhino, my dad's favorite club player I
- 33:45Speaker 2: met thirty years ago, and then we went to the
- 33:47Speaker 2: induction ceremony twenty years ago. Lou up in Cooper's Town.
- 33:51Speaker 2: What's your favorite memory of Ryan Samberg?
- 33:54Speaker 4: Well, I don't know if it's my favorite memory, but
- 33:57Speaker 4: I remember Ryan Samberg very well.
- 34:00Speaker 1: Obviously, he was a Hall of Fame player, a Gold
- 34:03Speaker 1: Glove winner.
- 34:05Speaker 4: He I think for a while had one of the
- 34:07Speaker 4: long streaks, like over one hundred and fifty games or
- 34:10Speaker 4: out of arrow or something like that.
- 34:12Speaker 1: He was just he was an outstanding player.
- 34:14Speaker 4: Was drafted by the Phillies, and I think he was
- 34:18Speaker 4: going to play college football before he was drafted by
- 34:22Speaker 4: the Phills.
- 34:23Speaker 1: Played I think maybe one of just one or two
- 34:25Speaker 1: games for.
- 34:25Speaker 4: The Phills, and then the Phills sprayed them to the Cubs,
- 34:29Speaker 4: where he became a superstar and.
- 34:30Speaker 1: A Hall of Famer.
- 34:33Speaker 4: He's connected with my Mets fandom. In nineteen eighty four,
- 34:39Speaker 4: the Mets were just starting to come. That was the
- 34:41Speaker 4: first year the Mets came out of those seven of
- 34:44Speaker 4: the darkest years in franchise history. Strawberry Darryl Strawberry was
- 34:49Speaker 4: rookie year in eighty three. Davey Johnson was rookie manager.
- 34:52Speaker 4: In nineteen eighty four. Ron Darling I believe, was in
- 34:55Speaker 4: this second year with the team. They had gotten him
- 34:57Speaker 4: from the Texas Rangers in the trade, and Dave Johnson
- 35:03Speaker 4: convinced Frank Cashen to promote Dwight Gooden, who was only
- 35:09Speaker 4: nineteen years old at that time, to come with the
- 35:11Speaker 4: team from the beginning of the season. And they had
- 35:14Speaker 4: gotten Peterrnandez at the trade deadline the year before nineteen
- 35:18Speaker 4: eighty three, so that was Keith's first full year, and
- 35:21Speaker 4: the Meds and Cubs were in a neck and neck race.
- 35:24Speaker 4: Now the Mets were supposed to be nowhere. They had
- 35:27Speaker 4: lost ninety plus games for the previous six or seven
- 35:30Speaker 4: years in a row, and the Mets were hanging in
- 35:34Speaker 4: with the Cubs. The Cubs had gotten Rick Sudcliffe at
- 35:37Speaker 4: the trade deadline, which in those days was June fifteenth.
- 35:41Speaker 4: Sudcliffe won an Alsai Young Award. He was sixteen and one.
- 35:46Speaker 4: From June fifteenth on. They had gotten from the Cleveland
- 35:49Speaker 4: Indians in the trade. So the Mets and Cubs were
- 35:53Speaker 4: neck and neck, but they had big series with each
- 35:57Speaker 4: other in August and then in early September, the Mets
- 36:00Speaker 4: could not beat the Cubs. The Mets was either six
- 36:03Speaker 4: out of seven or seven out of eight and ended
- 36:05Speaker 4: up being six or five or six games out of
- 36:10Speaker 4: the Divisionally, the Mets won ninety games that year, which
- 36:12Speaker 4: was a tremendous feat and set them up for there
- 36:15Speaker 4: the nineteen eighty six championship. And really the Mets were
- 36:19Speaker 4: good every year for the rest of the decade. But
- 36:22Speaker 4: Sandberg was a difference maker. And in mid June, mid
- 36:26Speaker 4: or late June, this is what this is the Ron
- 36:29Speaker 4: Sandberg moment. I remember he was playing the Cardinals, their
- 36:33Speaker 4: big rivals, at Relief Field. It was an NBC game
- 36:38Speaker 4: and the Cardinals were down, were up, excuse me, nine
- 36:43Speaker 4: to eight. The bomb of the ninth inning, and future
- 36:47Speaker 4: Hall of Famer Bruce Souter was on the mound for
- 36:50Speaker 4: the Cardinals, outstanding Hall of Fame closer gives up a
- 36:55Speaker 4: home run the Sandberg Cardinals take the lead in the
- 36:58Speaker 4: top of ninth inning. I believe this were two runs
- 37:01Speaker 4: and I and in the bottom of the n I
- 37:03Speaker 4: it's top of the tenth thing. He scored two runs
- 37:05Speaker 4: to take the lead. In the bottom of the tenth inning,
- 37:07Speaker 4: Sandberg came up again with a runner on base. He
- 37:10Speaker 4: had another home run into the bleachers, tying the game.
- 37:15Speaker 4: The Cubs won the game either the next inning or
- 37:17Speaker 4: a couple of innings later. But Sandberg was such a
- 37:19Speaker 4: great play, had such a great game and hit those
- 37:22Speaker 4: two clutch home runs or of a future Hall of Famer.
- 37:24Speaker 4: Both times, Suitor was still in the game in the
- 37:27Speaker 4: tenth inning, and that propelled the clubs to win the
- 37:32Speaker 4: division and keep the met a young Mets team at Bay.
- 37:35Speaker 1: Great player. He later managed the Phillies. Unfortunately he left
- 37:42Speaker 1: us way too soon, he really did.
- 37:48Speaker 2: But I tell you, the Cubs did it right. They
- 37:50Speaker 2: put up his statue before he passed. And that's not
- 37:53Speaker 2: a dig at the Mets. I'm just saying, at least
- 37:55Speaker 2: he saw his statue go up.
- 37:58Speaker 1: Well that I mean, can't You can't control when somebody's
- 38:02Speaker 1: gonna you know, how long, when somebody's gonna live and die.
- 38:05Speaker 4: But the Mets, obviously you should have had sever statue up,
- 38:09Speaker 4: you know, in the late eighties after they retired his
- 38:11Speaker 4: number in eighty eight. I assume you were talking about
- 38:13Speaker 4: Tom sever when you talked about that, But you know,
- 38:22Speaker 4: Sandberg was was outstanding. Now, the Cubs were a great
- 38:25Speaker 4: team in eighty four. They should have won the National
- 38:26Speaker 4: League pennant. They got they went to they got to
- 38:28Speaker 4: a two zero lead against the Padres in the NLCS.
- 38:32Speaker 4: They were the first two games at at Wrigley Field,
- 38:36Speaker 4: and then even though they had a better record than
- 38:37Speaker 4: the Padres in those days, they switched one year to
- 38:41Speaker 4: the next. The East had the home field advantage, the
- 38:44Speaker 4: West has the home field advantage, and the Padres had
- 38:46Speaker 4: games three, four, and five at home, and unfortunately for
- 38:50Speaker 4: the Cubs, the Padres rallied to win games three, four
- 38:54Speaker 4: and five and an inferior a good but inferia Padres
- 39:00Speaker 4: team beat the Cubs and got slacked in the World
- 39:02Speaker 4: Series four games to one by the Tigers. I think
- 39:06Speaker 4: a Tiger Cub World Series in nineteen eighty four would
- 39:09Speaker 4: have been tremendously close, even though the Tigers had a
- 39:12Speaker 4: super team, they had the best team in baseball.
- 39:14Speaker 1: They got after a thirty five and five start that
- 39:16Speaker 1: year and really coasted home.
- 39:22Speaker 2: Absolutely well. Love this chat and we'll do this again
- 39:26Speaker 2: next week at the One Leg Up Network
