- 0:00Podcasthero.com. Welcome to the Daily Quote, the
- 0:06podcast designed to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:11I'm your host Andrew McGivern, and this episode is brought to
- 0:14you by the Great News Podcast because good news should be
- 0:19heard available where all fine podcasts are found.
- 0:23But just to make it easy for you, I've left a link in the
- 0:26show notes. You've probably seen a version
- 0:29of today's quote floating around online, most often misattributed
- 0:33to Picasso or Shakespeare. But the person who actually said
- 0:37it was Doctor David Biscott, American psychiatrist, UCLA
- 0:43professor, best selling author and one of the first
- 0:46psychiatrists in history to bring therapy into mainstream
- 0:49radio, where he helped millions of people find clarity about
- 0:54their lives, he wrote. The purpose of life is to
- 0:58discover your gift. The work of life is to develop
- 1:03it. The meaning of life is to give
- 1:06your gift away. Three sentences and three
- 1:14stages, and together they form the most complete answer to the
- 1:18question humanity has been asking since the beginning.
- 1:22Why are we here? Most people spend their whole
- 1:26lives stuck in the first stage searching, trying to figure out
- 1:31what they're actually here to do, what their gift is.
- 1:36And that search can feel overwhelming, even paralyzing,
- 1:40when you're looking at it as one enormous question to solve all
- 1:43at once. But this God breaks it into
- 1:47something manageable. Discover, then develop, then
- 1:52give away. Notice that the purpose of life,
- 1:56the reason you're here, is discovery, not achievement, not
- 2:01success. Simply finding the thing, the
- 2:06thing that is uniquely yours to offer.
- 2:09That's the beginning of everything.
- 2:12Then comes the part most people skip.
- 2:15The work of life is to develop it, because a discovered gift
- 2:20that isn't developed stays mere potential forever.
- 2:25Biscott spent his entire career pressing people toward clarity
- 2:29and direct action. He believed the gap between
- 2:33knowing something and doing something about it was where
- 2:36most human suffering lived. You don't just find your gift
- 2:40and wait for it to matter. You work on it.
- 2:43You refine it. You develop it through practice,
- 2:46failure, repetition, and commitment.
- 2:49And then the line that elevates everything, The meaning of life
- 2:56is to give your gift away. Not sell it, not hoard it, not
- 3:02protect it, Give it Because a gift that never reaches anyone
- 3:06else hasn't fulfilled its purpose.
- 3:09Meaning isn't found in the having, it's found in the
- 3:13giving. So here's the question.
- 3:16Where are you in Viscot's three stages right now?
- 3:19Still discovering? Keep looking.
- 3:23It might be closer than you think.
- 3:25Developing. Keep working.
- 3:28The gift gets sharper with every repetition.
- 3:32Or are you holding on to something that's ready to be
- 3:34given away because the meaning is waiting at the end of that
- 3:39third stage and the world needs what only you have to give?
- 3:46That's it for today. I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off
- 3:49for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 3:53Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
