- 1:17Hey, hey, welcome back to Hot Takes with the Murph man.
- 1:20I am the Murph man. I'm here with my Co host Connor.
- 1:22How are we doing today, Connor? We I'm doing good, Murph, man,
- 1:25how are you doing today? Not so good.
- 1:28Why do you say that? U tip got their ass kicked last
- 1:31night. Yeah, they did.
- 1:33Oh my God. You know, there was ESPN was
- 1:37talking about who has it harder, EU tip or the Sam Houston team
- 1:43with coaches and they're like, well, no, you too beat Sam
- 1:47Houston. So that's an obvious one.
- 1:49That's the only thing we beat. Huh.
- 1:51It's sad. It's sad that you have to go
- 1:53back to just that one. One win, right?
- 1:55And then next week we go against the Texans.
- 1:58Not Texans. No Texas.
- 2:00Or Texas, The Longhorns, Yeah. And then Texas, when you play
- 2:04Michigan after that, you're telling me you're playing, we're
- 2:07playing well, you because it's your school, Oklahoma, Texas.
- 2:13And then Michigan. Hold on, something's not right.
- 2:23Yeah, your brain's right. Was it a different year?
- 2:31Yeah, it was another year, dude. Oh dude, I like just hold on
- 2:35take on Instagram that's why. My bad.
- 2:38I was like, we don't play Texas. No, you don't.
- 2:40Not this year. Are you kidding?
- 2:42Playing Oklahoma, Michigan and Texas all in one year.
- 2:46No, we play Michigan the 19th, so in two weeks.
- 2:52OK, So will you play next week? Texas Southern.
- 2:54Texas Southern TSU Well, I think this is going to be a pretty
- 2:58good game. What do you think?
- 3:00Is that home or away? This one should be home, yeah.
- 3:07Should be, yeah. Well, I think it might be
- 3:13actually. 00 that's for next year.
- 3:17That's what I saw. I didn't see they joined 27.
- 3:20They played Texas next year. Next year.
- 3:22Next year on the 11th. So you play Michigan and then
- 3:28Texas? No, that's that's Texas
- 3:31schedule. Oh, that's Texas's schedule?
- 3:34Yeah, OK. That's what it was.
- 3:36I didn't see the 2027 but yeah, yeesh, we're going to lose.
- 3:42So you are playing Texas. Texas just next year.
- 3:45Yeah. All right.
- 3:48Well, welcome to everyone who's listening today.
- 3:50We're here live on military broadcast radio.
- 3:52You can find us on Roku, and you can also find us at all our
- 3:59socials at Pure Hot Takes. And right now we're on TikTok as
- 4:04well at the MBR Roku channel. So that's something you want to
- 4:09watch. Come on in and watch us.
- 4:12We'd love to talk to you so you get ready to get the show
- 4:17started to think Hunter. Yes, Sir.
- 4:20All right, let's ignite that fuse.
- 4:31In today's episode, we are navigating your first
- 4:34performance review, exploring how to prepare, receive feedback
- 4:38with grace and use it to level up your career.
- 4:42Navigating your first performance review,
- 4:45Understanding the stakes and the process of your inaugural
- 4:48evaluation to set a professional tone.
- 4:51Preparing with data and accomplishments.
- 4:54Documenting your wins throughout the year to advocate effectively
- 4:57for yourself. Receiving feedback and using it
- 5:00to grow. Developing A mindset that treats
- 5:03critique as actionable data for your career progression.
- 5:07Connor, what are your initial thoughts on walking into that
- 5:10first review room? You really had to add me into
- 5:16there, huh? I did you.
- 5:18Just had you had to. I did.
- 5:23Personally, walking into the interview room, I'm terrified.
- 5:27You're terrified. Yeah, it's my first one.
- 5:31Well, you OK? It's sad, not right.
- 5:34So what are you? What are your thoughts going
- 5:36into a first performance interview?
- 5:42Well, I mean not, I'm not nervous because I know I haven't
- 5:46done anything wrong. I know I did.
- 5:48They would tell me like on the spot, but if I had one over
- 5:53there while I used to work I I would think it would be good.
- 5:57Yeah, well then why don't you be the Khrushchev leader?
- 6:00Yeah. Right.
- 6:02So yeah, you know, yeah, I think, I think you'd have done
- 6:06well in your first interview, but.
- 6:08May you still get the nerves because it's.
- 6:09Your of course, you know, even I get the nerves and it's my one
- 6:12thousandth. I mean, you know, it's crazy if
- 6:17you think about it. 19 years old to now is how long 4038?
- 6:23OK. Four times a year, every three
- 6:28months. And then, you know, sometimes
- 6:35it's just at the end of the year, you know, depends on how
- 6:38everyone does it at school. We do at the end of the year,
- 6:43right? So it's one of those things that
- 6:48you have to be ready for because you know it's coming.
- 6:51And how do you end up prepared? Well, you look back on all your
- 6:58things that you've done and if you've done well throughout the
- 7:01semester, I mean the year, you'll get a pretty good review.
- 7:06Now when you get a raise or not, that's based on budget and
- 7:08everything. And I think everyone should get
- 7:09a little bit of a raise. Yeah.
- 7:15So the. Sorry.
- 7:24Sorry, you need to focus, please.
- 7:29Like what? What'd you do?
- 7:32What did you do? I joined the live.
- 7:36Oh, you joined it? Yeah.
- 7:38OK, because. You were going to get on my butt
- 7:41if I didn't. You know what are you going to
- 7:42pay attention to the to the TikTok this this time?
- 7:45Not as much, but I I'll try. You should have it on the screen
- 7:47there. Well, I did, and you were like,
- 7:49no, you distracted me. Awesome.
- 7:52I hear my voice from another angle.
- 7:53I'm like what? Well, yeah, 'cause.
- 7:55Anyway, what I was saying was, you know, your performance, the
- 7:58reviews coming up, be prepared for it.
- 8:00It's OK to be scared and not guaranteed a, a raise, but you
- 8:04have to be ready for that. OK.
- 8:07So let's let's talk about that and let's talk about today's
- 8:11burning question. Today's burning question
- 8:26challenges you to identify the most important asset to bring to
- 8:30your performance review. A A list of all your
- 8:33accomplishments. BA List of your weaknesses.
- 8:37CA list of all the things your manager did wrong.
- 8:41DA list of all the projects you want to work on.
- 8:44Connor, how do you think our listeners should weigh these
- 8:47choices before stepping into the room?
- 8:51All right, there they are. Connor, what is the most
- 8:53important thing to bring to your performance review?
- 8:56A list of all your accomplishments, A list of all
- 8:58your weaknesses. A list of all the things your
- 9:00manager did wrong. That's not right, right?
- 9:04No. And then list of all the
- 9:05projects you want to work on. It's obviously.
- 9:10A It's obviously a you're going. To list all your accomplishments
- 9:12and show your boss what you've done with your life.
- 9:15Right, OK, performance reviews are interesting because you are
- 9:23being corrected and no one likes to be corrected.
- 9:27You've heard of criticism, right?
- 9:29No one has to be told that being their job is being done bad.
- 9:34But there are also people that don't like to be told they're
- 9:35being good. Like I've told my boss several
- 9:38times, you don't have to tell me I'm doing good because I know I
- 9:40did a good job. When I mess up, tell me don't,
- 9:43don't wait. Don't you know, fix it right
- 9:44then and there and I will admit whatever I need to admit right
- 9:49then you can move on at a perm performance review.
- 9:53Like I went to that performance review with that guy that I hate
- 9:56so much. He didn't even have it filled
- 9:58out and all he did was just berate me for the 40 minutes I
- 10:00was in there and then wrote did good on all my reviews.
- 10:05And what a jerk, right? You did good.
- 10:11Yeah, but I had to take it there from him and sit down and just
- 10:13take it. And all the examples he was
- 10:15giving me, I was fighting him on it because I'm hell no, no, no,
- 10:18no, that's not right. And that's not right because I
- 10:20had my list, OK. He would tell me things like,
- 10:25what am I doing? And I would say here's what I've
- 10:28done. And I told him that, you know, I
- 10:30do things behind the scenes that you don't see.
- 10:33And since I've left, I've been told by several people that the
- 10:36atmosphere has changed because I kept things together even though
- 10:41no one knew that. And my principal was amazing,
- 10:48right? She knew what I did.
- 10:49And, you know, she was with me every morning, out in the plate,
- 10:52in the bus stop and everything. But you always have to be ready
- 10:59for someone to be negative. And you also have to be ready to
- 11:03accept all that. Right.
- 11:06Yeah. Well, the performance review is
- 11:12something people don't talk about because that's just
- 11:13something you're expected to do, right?
- 11:14No one's ever told you. Here are the things you need to
- 11:16learn when you go into a performance interview.
- 11:18It's all a life experience. And that's that's the whole
- 11:20reason I created this podcast was I don't believe in life
- 11:24experience being it should be taught.
- 11:28OK, there's some things that need to be taught, like changing
- 11:33a tire. Well, yeah.
- 11:35OK, now I will tell you this. One day you got a flat tire.
- 11:39Yeah. And you call me and you're like,
- 11:41I can't do this. Hold on.
- 11:46And I said, what do you mean? You know how to change a tire?
- 11:51And he said, yeah, I do, but I don't have the tire iron.
- 11:57I don't know why. It's not even in the car, Right.
- 12:00I was like, damn. OK, I'll be right there.
- 12:02Yeah. Yeah, not that I couldn't do it,
- 12:05just I, I right. I literally couldn't, couldn't
- 12:08do it. I had, I had the Jack, but I
- 12:11didn't have the tire iron or red.
- 12:13I had nothing. Now you did do one thing wrong.
- 12:16You put the tire up before you loosen the bolts.
- 12:23That's what you're supposed to do, No.
- 12:24Yes. No.
- 12:25You put the Jack up first anyways.
- 12:26No. Yes.
- 12:27You loose, loose. Loosen, loosen, loosen, Jack it
- 12:31up, and then you can do it because otherwise your car is
- 12:32going to be rotating your whole tire because there's nothing
- 12:34holding it still like the ground.
- 12:37Well, and then you tighten it up.
- 12:40You lower it and then you tighten them up again.
- 12:43Yeah. And then how many miles you have
- 12:45to drive before you tighten them one more time.
- 12:46I. Don't know 20. 425 OK, that is
- 12:56something that people don't do and I'll give you a perfect
- 13:01example of that. They were driving up real grand
- 13:06and that car in front of us, the tire just rolled off.
- 13:08Yeah. Either someone went in and
- 13:13loosened all their lug nuts. That's pretty scary because that
- 13:17could have happened on the freeway.
- 13:18OK, yeah. But I think it took him a few
- 13:22seconds to realize his tire was off because he kept driving a
- 13:26little bit. You know, I, I, I don't know if
- 13:29he tried pulling over to the side, I'm like, I would have
- 13:30just stopped right where I was. Screw traffic, right?
- 13:34But yeah, his front and left tire just went off at 30 miles
- 13:39an hour. Well, actually it wasn't.
- 13:41We have come in from a stop. So it wasn't even up to 30 miles
- 13:44an hour. Luckily, that's probably why he
- 13:46didn't crash. But what did?
- 13:47What did you see? Connor let you tell the part
- 13:49about the tire. We're driving and all I see, I
- 13:52see a tire bouncing in front of us.
- 13:55So like going above the windshield, like you can
- 13:57literally break the windshield at any moment.
- 13:59If I hadn't stopped, yes. No.
- 14:01Well, yeah. Well, no.
- 14:05I speed up because it was going downhill.
- 14:07I well as it ran off the car, it was literally right in front of
- 14:10us. I saw it happen.
- 14:11I stopped. That's why it went.
- 14:14I was driving. Then you stopped.
- 14:21Yeah. OK, because I realized, oh,
- 14:24there's a tire in front of us. Yeah.
- 14:26But Utah, Utah, you, you talked, you thought you stopped because
- 14:34you saw the tire. Yeah, because it almost hit us
- 14:36because we, we didn't think, we didn't think of a tire, you
- 14:41know, just falling off and bouncing.
- 14:43We're just like, oh, that's a cold movie effect.
- 14:46Like no. It was like a Roadrunner Acme
- 14:48thing, right? Yeah, and then they went
- 14:51downhill and almost hit a Camaro.
- 14:53Mustang. Wasn't it a Mustang, white
- 14:55Mustang? Or was it a white Camaro?
- 14:57I think no it. Doesn't matter but it.
- 14:59Was a black Camaro. Was was it?
- 15:02This is a perfect example of witness testimony. 2 people see
- 15:07the same thing, and we see and recall two different things.
- 15:10Was it black? I swear it was.
- 15:12It might have been I'm I'm not going to sit here and tell you
- 15:14I'm right about. That we'll go back, we'll go see
- 15:17that Carvey still there. Man, all that tire was crazy.
- 15:22Yeah. So you always have to tie a new
- 15:24tire, OK. And again, there is life skills
- 15:27that you have to learn and another.
- 15:29He tied it. The lug nuts are still on the.
- 15:35Oh, that's right. The rim broke.
- 15:37Not that. Like, that's right.
- 15:39My bad. Yeah, I see.
- 15:40I recall completely different. Damn.
- 15:43OK. Yeah, the whole like, like
- 15:46everything was still intact. It just fell off the whole like
- 15:48actual yeah part of the car, the.
- 15:52The rim holding the tire broke off of the axle.
- 15:57But other things we have to learn, like when I was teaching
- 16:00Connor to drive, he did not have a lot of experience and.
- 16:04Obviously, if you teach me how to drive.
- 16:06I'm saying, but yeah, we hadn't been driving a long time and
- 16:11there's an on ramp that I hate. I tell Conor, avoid this on ramp
- 16:15as much as you can. There's a couple here in El
- 16:16Paso. I just tell him ignore him if
- 16:18you can, like go past them on further lane.
- 16:22But a car was coming in and there was space in front of us
- 16:28and there was space behind us and this guy tried forcing
- 16:33himself in on the spot. We were.
- 16:37Connor looked left, saw the van there that he couldn't go.
- 16:40Yeah, it was a black truck. And he?
- 16:45Well, you called two different things.
- 16:47Well, I wasn't really paying attention.
- 16:48I was worried about the car. Yeah, but he didn't panic and he
- 16:54kept his lane. And I've told him I said you
- 16:58have to avoid an accident, right?
- 17:02But if you get to the point where you can't.
- 17:04Make sure you hit where it's injured.
- 17:08Make sure you fix the part of the car.
- 17:09Hit the car. No, that's not.
- 17:11That's a joke, dude. If you have a part of the car
- 17:13that's bad and you want to replace it, get a hit on that
- 17:18side. But Connor kept driving.
- 17:22Yeah, I just moved a little bit to my left.
- 17:24And he did not panic. And I, I Oh, yeah.
- 17:29OK. But I told you I was very proud
- 17:30of you for the way you'd handle that.
- 17:32OK. But you had just started
- 17:34driving. Yeah.
- 17:35But I'm going to ask you, why do you think you did so well in
- 17:37driving? Because I could keep my cool.
- 17:41Because I was teaching how to drive and be aware of stuff.
- 17:43Your head's on the swivel. We've talked about this.
- 17:44Yeah, I know it is. Like we're driving and he sees
- 17:46stuff and I'm like, so proud of you because not everybody does
- 17:51that. Yeah, like yesterday.
- 17:54I'm at a stoplight truck. Oh, not a truck.
- 17:58No cars on my right, a trucks on my left.
- 18:00Sorry, I'm backwards. Trucks on my right, cars on my
- 18:03left and we're at a stoplight and the turn lane is empty and a
- 18:07fire truck passes us right and it's still a red light.
- 18:11Then an ambulance comes and then I see the fire Marshall come.
- 18:15I knew it was a fire Marshall when he passes.
- 18:19I couldn't see him on far away. Anyway, the two cars started
- 18:22driving and I honked the porn repeatedly and they both stopped
- 18:27and then the fire Marshall was able to go through but I saw him
- 18:32come in my rear mirror right. Yeah.
- 18:38Where were they looking at? They didn't see his other third
- 18:43car coming. You know, like everyone expects
- 18:44the fire truck to ambulance. OK, we're good.
- 18:46Was it like back-to-back? Yeah.
- 18:47Oh, they. Were probably about 1015 seconds
- 18:50apart at the most. Oh, then yeah, that's that's
- 18:52why. But, well, the ambulance, the
- 18:54fire truck went through on the red and then he went through the
- 18:57green. And yeah, but you have to be
- 19:00over your surroundings. And there's life skills that we
- 19:03have to learn. And one of those life skills is
- 19:07work and performance reviews. So let's talk about that a
- 19:10little more. In today's Hot Take, we'll talk
- 19:12about what I believe is something important to cover
- 19:15today. Value is the only relevant
- 19:27metric. If your manager doesn't remember
- 19:29your accomplishments, it's not their failure, it's yours.
- 19:33Making weekly progress tracking non negotiable value is the only
- 19:38relevant metric. Your worth is defined by the
- 19:41measurable results you deliver, not just effort.
- 19:44Your manager for getting wins is your failure.
- 19:48It is your responsibility to maintain visibility and ensure
- 19:51your impact is documented. Weekly progress tracking makes
- 19:56reviews a formality. By keeping a consistent record,
- 20:00you remove ambiguity and anxiety from the evaluation process.
- 20:04Connor, Are you ready to fan the flames on this one?
- 20:09Is every single video about me? I was waiting for it.
- 20:15I was thinking I'm like it better not say my name.
- 20:17It better not say my name. You know I do this once in a
- 20:20while. I dismissed with you are.
- 20:21All of them. I'm pretty sure there's a lot of
- 20:24them. Oh God.
- 20:25OK, even the brakes. Oh.
- 20:28But before we get to that, I I do want to say welcome to the
- 20:31chat to Jessica and Cassie and God morning to you too.
- 20:36You were rushing me. You were like, let's go do the
- 20:41the, you know, burning question. I'm like, wait, let me respond.
- 20:44What's better, not doing it or doing it wrong?
- 20:47Doing it wrong. At least you can tell H Hey, I'm
- 20:49paying attention to the chat. Anyway, going going back to our
- 20:55to our slide here. Besides, this keyboard sucks.
- 20:58It's too stiff to type. Value is the only real relevant
- 21:03metric. Your manager doesn't remember
- 21:04your accomplishments. That's your fault.
- 21:06What do you think about that statement?
- 21:10If they don't remember what you're doing, whose fault is it?
- 21:14I mean neither. He has other people to worry
- 21:19about. Exactly.
- 21:20You only have to worry about yourself.
- 21:21Yeah. So you need to be aware of what
- 21:23you've done. Yeah.
- 21:24I need to make sure he knows or she knows.
- 21:27Not, not. Always, always.
- 21:29We've been talking about this for the last couple weeks.
- 21:31I'm still saying not always. Not everything needs to be
- 21:34documented, yeah. No, not everything but your
- 21:37wins, your good wins, You want to point that out.
- 21:39What would you even count as a win that you would need to stop
- 21:45your work and go to the boss and be like, guess what I did?
- 21:47Let me think hey mom and dad, guess what I did?
- 21:51Well, like they, they want us to reach out to students who are
- 21:53fit, who are not interacting at school and not doing their work
- 21:56and everything. And I told my boss, yes, we had
- 21:58a meeting yesterday and I said, if there's one kid per class and
- 22:06we have 40 teachers and they have five classes each, that
- 22:10could be 200 kids easily just one kid per class.
- 22:15And some classes have 250 students, some have 30, right?
- 22:22So I, I told her, it's not that I don't want to do it, you know,
- 22:26because I'll do my job, right, but I don't want to do it
- 22:29personally. But I was like, that is a lot of
- 22:33calls 200 kids. And it's like, well, let's talk
- 22:38about that. Maybe you don't have to call
- 22:39them. You can text them because we
- 22:40have bulk texture. You can text, you know, 200 kids
- 22:42at once, see who replies and if those who haven't replied, we
- 22:45can call them, you know what I mean?
- 22:46So there's there's a lot of things we can do with that, but
- 22:52I'm going to get more into that when we come back from break.
- 22:56OK, OK, so stay tuned. We return after these messages.
- 23:01It's time for a break. Hot takes with the Murph man
- 23:04will return after these messages.
- 23:13The station where our veterans voices are heard MBR talk Find.
- 23:18Us on the web at MB Radio dot According to the V as Suicide
- 23:25Data report, an average of 22 veterans die by suicide every
- 23:29single day. This figure is a sobering

- 26:55There will always be someone ready to listen.
- 26:57Remember, you are not alone. That's right, you are not alone.
- 27:01Everyone I'll say encounter about a person that unalived
- 27:06himself made an announcement and everything.
- 27:10Remember the football player and I don't know from how long it
- 27:16took from that letter to him doing something or that post,
- 27:20but unfortunately it didn't get to anyone in time.
- 27:24You know, remember you guys there, there's always help out
- 27:27there. 988 press one. You don't have to be a veteran.
- 27:30Our military, it's the crisis line for anyone to call and get
- 27:34help. All right, but back to what we
- 27:36were talking about, Connor, my boss was telling us you're going
- 27:40to do this new task, and I was bringing up problems with it.
- 27:44OK Do you think I'm a negative person?
- 27:51I know I can be. You.
- 27:53You could be, but most likely you're not.
- 27:57Not most likely, but regularly you're not.
- 27:59Right. But I, I tend to see problems as
- 28:01some people don't. Yeah, right now a different way
- 28:04of seeing things. I could agree with that.
- 28:07So, you know, I don't think she took it as a challenge because
- 28:11she says you're right, I thought the same thing, here's how we're
- 28:16going to fix it. So she already had an answer.
- 28:18Exactly. When you go with a problem to
- 28:20supervisor, you need to have a solution.
- 28:22Remember I told you that? Yeah.
- 28:25Not everyone does that. Because I said she wanted us to
- 28:29do it like we could. All three to the three, three
- 28:32team members could do it together or we could do it
- 28:36separately. And I'm like, there's no way we
- 28:38can do it separately. I can tell you that right now,
- 28:40OK? Well, how would you do it
- 28:41separately? Well, like you take 30, I take
- 28:4330 she takes you know what I mean?
- 28:45What would the group of 3B? Me and my 2 coworkers.
- 28:49And how much would you guys take?
- 28:51Depends on what the number is divided by three.
- 28:53If there's three, then we take one each.
- 28:54If there's thirty, we take 10 each.
- 28:55If there's 90, we take 3 or 30 each.
- 28:59And it was just you guys. Yeah.
- 29:01So then it was 200. Then we'll take 65.
- 29:07OK. And if it's individuals?
- 29:10Well. It'll still be the same.
- 29:11Yeah, we still have to do the 250, but do it by ourselves.
- 29:14Well, you're going to do it by yourself anyways.
- 29:16You got to contact the kid by yourself if you got to go 1 by
- 29:201. If it's doable, we can do it
- 29:23alone, but we'll we'll mostly do it as a team.
- 29:25Everything gloves together. But that's not the point of the
- 29:27story. The point of the story is I was
- 29:28bringing up to that's why. What do you mean it doesn't make
- 29:31sense? Can you call Twitter people in
- 29:33the day, Connor? Sean, that's in total, not just
- 29:38you. There's other people that do it.
- 29:41If I'm alone that week, it's my week.
- 29:44I do all tuned by myself. OK.
- 29:46And I said we can't do that, we have to split it by a team.
- 29:49But if there's a low number like 30, then I can do that or
- 29:52everyone else. Can you made it seem like all of
- 29:54you were there? Had to contact 200 students
- 29:57individually. Oh no, not 200 each. 200 total
- 30:01and. Then I was like, no matter what
- 30:03team, the three are individual, you're going to split up into
- 30:05three anyways. Makes sense, right?
- 30:08That's why you OK? I see the confusion.
- 30:09But anyway, I had a boss I worked with who I like, but he
- 30:15didn't want me. He didn't think it was
- 30:17management material that I've told you after I left, three
- 30:19months later, he's offering me whatever money I wanted to come
- 30:21back. Right when I went to the job
- 30:25interview, the person interviewed me asked me how come
- 30:27I didn't put my boss as a reference.
- 30:29And I, I didn't think he'd give me a good reference.
- 30:32But what I told her is I said, oh, he's never available.
- 30:35You're not going to be able to get a hold of him.
- 30:36I have trouble getting home. And I work with him.
- 30:38He's like, oh, I have his cell. I'll call him at home tonight,
- 30:42right? And he said, oh, he's a pain in
- 30:47the butt. He questions everything.
- 30:51And then my, the she became my boss.
- 30:53And she says, but is he a good worker?
- 31:00And he said, yeah, and that's all she cares about.
- 31:04Now, the pain in the butt part, when an employee speaks up and
- 31:09challenges the manager or speaks up and challenges a position, we
- 31:14have to be careful with that because some people on the team
- 31:20don't say anything. They just do whatever and
- 31:23they're going to bitch about it on their own.
- 31:25Some people speak up, like myself, right?
- 31:29And it's always the same people that speak up.
- 31:32Not that we're wrong or anything.
- 31:34It's just we tend to voice ourselves more than the average
- 31:42worker. And is that a pain in the side?
- 31:45Yeah. A throne in the side is to say
- 31:46yes. Pain in the butt, yes.
- 31:49But is it bad to do that? See, I've never been told in the
- 31:53job interview. God, you know, you always
- 31:55complain because the things I've said have happened, right?
- 32:02Oh, yeah. And they're, you know, they
- 32:04don't come and tell me. Oh, thank you for correcting me
- 32:07or finding that error or whatever.
- 32:08You know what I mean? But I love and you know I do.
- 32:12I love saying I told you so. Trust me.
- 32:15Yeah, you do. OK, because I brought it up and
- 32:21you didn't do anything about it. That's what it's frustrating,
- 32:24right? So if you're worried about
- 32:28speaking up because your boss isn't going to like you, if
- 32:31they're a good boss, they're going to want to accept your
- 32:37feedback. Now can you be challenging?
- 32:39And I had one boss. Let me, let me.
- 32:42This is this is I. He got pissed off at me in the
- 32:44meeting with in front of everybody, but he knows I'm not.
- 32:50Hey, welcome, Monica, welcome to the chat.
- 32:55He knew that I had thick skin. If I screw up or if I'm arguing
- 32:59with you, bring it right. We were doing something that was
- 33:07taking up a lot of my time. I was getting paid for it,
- 33:11right? But it was stupid what we were
- 33:14doing. He knew it was stupid.
- 33:18His boss knew it was stupid. The director of the company knew
- 33:22it was stupid. The CEO knew it was stupid,
- 33:24right? But we had to do it.
- 33:29And one time I said something in a meeting and he says, well, no,
- 33:34we're not. We can't do that.
- 33:35I said, should I be talking to you or to your boss?
- 33:36Because he's the one making all the decisions for our team?
- 33:40That's a little too far, right? As soon as I said, I'm like, oh
- 33:43man, I'm about to get it. And he told me like, straight
- 33:47up, like, you're full of it and whatever you know.
- 33:50And I said, look, I know you're in a difficult situation.
- 33:53You have someone else running the team for you and you don't
- 33:56like it. None of us like it.
- 33:57And we're going to keep doing this.
- 34:01We have to come up with a plan. And then smart aleck like he is,
- 34:06he goes, so what's the plan? And I said, I'll show you.
- 34:11And I started. I talked about the plan.
- 34:13He goes, that's not going to work.
- 34:15Because there was a guy who'd been in the system in El Paso
- 34:19since he was a kid, bouncing in and out of the hospital, going
- 34:22to the emergency room, saying he's suicidal, he's overdosed,
- 34:26he's, you know, whatever. And he also had HIV.
- 34:29He had AIDS, OK. OK.
- 34:32And we were trying to help him as much as we could.
- 34:35And one day he decides he wants to move to San Francisco.
- 34:38I said, we can't just send you to San Francisco.
- 34:40You don't have the money for San Francisco.
- 34:41It's expensive. Whatever, whatever, whatever.
- 34:44I said let's look at some options.
- 34:45And then I ended up sending him to the state hospital and got
- 34:49him out of El Paso. And when I told my boss what I
- 34:55was doing, he says, you just getting rid of him.
- 34:59I'm like, no, this is what he wants.
- 35:00He wanted to go to San Francisco.
- 35:01I convinced him to go to the hospital because there you can
- 35:04stay a long time. And then he ended up leaving
- 35:07there and he ended up committing suicide because they didn't have
- 35:09the support for him that we had. Damn.
- 35:12OK. I did everything I could for
- 35:15this guy. You know, I, I, I did everything
- 35:20I could and I didn't pawn him on anybody.
- 35:23But I remember this is the case. I got sent to court on my first
- 35:26day of work in the over the job when I had my boss, the director
- 35:31of the department and the CEO in court with me because we were
- 35:35all going to go to jail because we were defying the judge's
- 35:36orders. Dang, and it was on my, it was
- 35:40my plan. And I, I, I kept my guns and
- 35:45the, the judge was even like, all right, he's already answered
- 35:48your questions. What else do you want from him?
- 35:49You know, and he ruled that they had to let him do it.
- 35:54And I was like, I'm against sending him to the state
- 36:00hospital. I was because I'm not dumping
- 36:03them on someone else. But he needs more than what we
- 36:05can offer here. So I thought he was going to
- 36:08come back, right? And then after I found out he
- 36:12was going, he told me thank you. And I said, hey, when you get
- 36:15there, tell me when to stay there.
- 36:18And he's like, OK, so he did. And they were so mad at me.
- 36:22He never told him that. But they're like, you just
- 36:24dumped him on us. I said, he has.
- 36:26He's a human being. He has a right to choose.
- 36:29Why can't he choose? It's not my choice to send him
- 36:34there. You know, he needed more than
- 36:35what we could offer. He was with you for nine months
- 36:37at the state hospital. Obviously, it was more than what
- 36:39we were offering him. And.
- 36:42But yeah, so my boss, his boss and the CEO all knew it was a
- 36:46problem. I fixed it right, but I was
- 36:50ready to go to jail for contempt of court in this case because it
- 36:55was my plan and everyone agreed with it.
- 36:59Legally it was a plan we could do.
- 37:04I had to say we were against it because that was my job, even
- 37:08though I'm the one that came up with the plan.
- 37:11Stupid I know. OK, but the point being is it's
- 37:15OK to argue with the system and point out errors and fix things,
- 37:20you know? But again, have a solution.
- 37:23But don't just complain to complain.
- 37:26Point out concerns you have. Be legit, be authentic, be
- 37:30genuine. How many times have I said those
- 37:31words? A lot.
- 37:34Be yourself. OK, Now can I be that person
- 37:38from day one? No.
- 37:41OK, you have to work your way in there to be that person.
- 37:44But if you're that kind of leader that always speaks up and
- 37:48defends your team and yourself, managers should have a problem
- 37:51with that if you're putting up legitimate reasons, you know
- 37:56what I mean? So keep that in mind when we go
- 37:58to your assessment because they might say, oh, you know, you're
- 38:01a difficult person. Am I difficult or am I just
- 38:04pointing out concerns that I have?
- 38:08And I'll, I'll, I'll say this. Am I ever?
- 38:17What's the word wrong or inappropriate?
- 38:23When I say something, the answer's no.
- 38:27If you're joking, maybe that's how I joke.
- 38:31I don't joke when it comes to seriousness like that.
- 38:33Well. Yeah, but if you do joke, you
- 38:35would, yeah. No, I'm not saying I never joke,
- 38:41you know, But yeah, so it's OK to speak up, have a voice.
- 38:46If they mark that down on your performance review, you can say,
- 38:49oh, I remember that situation because here's what happened.
- 38:52Here's what you saw. Here's what I did.
- 38:55Like the time I tried bringing the helicopters to the school,
- 38:58He's like, where on earth did you think you could do that
- 39:00without talking to us? And I said time out.
- 39:04I spoke with the counselor. I was planning it with her, and
- 39:06she was planning it with you. Now, if she didn't do it, that's
- 39:11on her. That's not on me.
- 39:14But Can you imagine if the date came and the helicopters right
- 39:18whole school outside principal like no time out.
- 39:21We got to go to class. You can't just be outside.
- 39:24What do? What do you mean?
- 39:25I have this whole helicopters are coming in in 30 minutes.
- 39:27You know what I mean? Like Can you imagine?
- 39:29Oh, that would have. Been all that would ache.
- 39:34You know, and unfortunately that that counselor is no longer with
- 39:37us. She passed away.
- 39:38She had some illnesses. And you know, I do miss her, but
- 39:41I look went to her afterwards and she says I didn't tell him
- 39:44because I didn't think he'd get it done.
- 39:46And I told her, I said I told you I'm amazing.
- 39:51I I, I get things done. She says, Sean, you're not going
- 39:54to bring 3 helicopters and land on our playfield.
- 39:57She says how who has that kind of power?
- 40:01It's not powers. I'm working with people and I
- 40:03know who to call. She says you ended up calling
- 40:06the FAAI said yeah, like I had a cell number to the people
- 40:10running the tower. And she was just like, I just
- 40:15didn't think it was going to happen.
- 40:17I said, so I look the fool. I said, you need to go in there
- 40:21and you need to tell him. Yeah, sounds right.
- 40:23I failed. And it's not on him, it's on me.
- 40:26I don't know if she did or not, but I know that wasn't my fault.
- 40:30And that was AI call that a win in my book because I had it
- 40:34scheduled. He cancelled it.
- 40:37Would you call it a win? No.
- 40:39Why not? Because the helicopter didn't
- 40:41show up maybe? But everything I could control,
- 40:44I did. Yeah.
- 40:46But when someone else steps in, it's not your fault it doesn't
- 40:49work. Yeah, but they stop you from
- 40:52winning, then you lose. Well.
- 40:55I ended up OK. I won the battle, but I lost the
- 40:57war. Remember I told you that phrase?
- 40:59Yeah, that's an example of that. I won the battle.
- 41:02I got an. It was all approved, 100%
- 41:05approved. Well, was it if you didn't talk
- 41:08to the principal? No, no, well, hold on.
- 41:10That wasn't my job. I even talked to the director of
- 41:15building whatever at the district and he was calling me
- 41:19back. And that's when I wasn't there.
- 41:22And the secretary's like, oh, director whatever's trying to
- 41:25reach Sean. And the this guy was like, why
- 41:28is he calling him? And he gets on the phone with
- 41:31him and no, no, cut it a lot. Don't worry, it's not going to
- 41:33happen. I had approval.
- 41:36He was coming back to tell me I had approval and I even called
- 41:39him after I said I'm sorry, I don't, I don't, I don't know
- 41:41what happened. I said, well, I, I do know what
- 41:44happened, but nothing we can do about it.
- 41:48And he and he, he even said you're actually going to land 3
- 41:50helicopters at the school. I said, yeah, they came out and
- 41:54they plotted their points and they knew where they were going
- 41:56to land and everything. He's like, wow, that's that's
- 42:00pretty cool. That is cool, but would have
- 42:04been cool if it happened. But I mean, still, still
- 42:08something. And Can you imagine on veteran's
- 42:11day, because this, this was veterans, not veteran's day.
- 42:14I had on veteran's day, they were going to do a fly over for
- 42:16us. Wow.
- 42:18A Chinook, a couple of Apaches and a couple of Blackhawks.
- 42:22We're going to go fly over to the school during the ceremony.
- 42:26That's cool. Honoring veterans.
- 42:28Wow. That's pretty cool, right?
- 42:31Yeah. Yeah.
- 42:33It is. But anyway, the point being is
- 42:37even if you lose or you think you'd lost, point out what you
- 42:41did do you know? And you could also point out
- 42:44what you did wrong, right? Yeah.
- 42:49And say, yeah, well, everything was good, but to that point,
- 42:51it's not my fault she didn't report it.
- 42:53Had she reported it, what would you have said?
- 42:56He said it can be done. OK, what if it could be done,
- 43:00which it could be. No, we're not going to risk
- 43:05that. All right?
- 43:08You know, all the kids in school, in the in the class, I'd
- 43:12have to tell them like, get away from the windows because there's
- 43:14flying rocks, right? Put your blinds down.
- 43:18You know, there are some dangers there, I'm not going to lie.
- 43:23But it is what it is. I've been hit by those rocks.
- 43:25It's not a big deal. OK.
- 43:28I have. I mean, yeah, but not like a
- 43:30little kid. You know, when I, when I told
- 43:33you I had like a very fast military experience, I've done a
- 43:35little bit of everything. When I was in the reserve unit
- 43:38here, I was a draftsman, like the architect that I was drawing
- 43:40the building plans and everything.
- 43:41We went out to the field and they put me to work with the
- 43:43petroleum unit refueling helicopters and they would land,
- 43:47we'd walk up to them while their rotors are still going, fuel
- 43:52them up and send them on their way.
- 43:56That's not something a lot of people get to do, you know.
- 44:00But what's funny about that? My, my Co worker, the one who
- 44:04was with me that night, he actually became a City
- 44:06Councilman leader. But I'm asleep and he's wearing
- 44:09one of the flight helmets and he has his flashlight on in the
- 44:12dark. And we're in the tent.
- 44:13So there's dust in the air and I hear I open my eye and he's with
- 44:24the flashlight like a lightsaber.
- 44:28He was trying to stay awake. He was bored.
- 44:32But that that's that's my my favorite story of his.
- 44:35That's. Funny it is, right?
- 44:39Well, let's get to again. I, I talked about the, the, the
- 44:43performance review when I was being interviewed.
- 44:48Well, I forgot what it's called. Going from my evaluation,
- 44:52whatever they call in the Army and trying to blink.
- 44:56One of the points I put on there was he refueled helicopters.
- 45:01Not even my job, you know, but you did it.
- 45:05I did everything I could. I did everything I could.
- 45:08One time I had to do a class on how to do camouflage.
- 45:12Wow. So when I asked for the
- 45:13camouflage, like we don't have any, I'm like most of them would
- 45:18go and buy it before they did training.
- 45:21They'd pay out of their no so I use markers green, black and
- 45:26brown. Oh God.
- 45:28Hey, you got to adapt and overcome, right?
- 45:30Yeah, did it work? It did.
- 45:32Everyone was laughing like that. That's pretty, pretty smart, you
- 45:35know. But yeah, yeah, nobody was
- 45:39walking around with marker on their face, though.
- 45:42All right, I'll tell you what. Let's get to when we're talking
- 45:44about the performance, we got to have some terminology.
- 45:47So let's talk about laying down the codes and our terms that
- 45:49we're going to be talking about today.
- 45:59To ensure we are on the same page, we are defining key terms
- 46:03to establish a baseline vocabulary so everyone
- 46:06understands how performance evaluations actually work.
- 46:10Performance review. A formal evaluation of your work
- 46:13behavior and contributions over a set period.
- 46:17Understanding this process helps you align your output with
- 46:20organizational expectations. Feedback Mindset Viewing
- 46:24constructive criticism as data for growth rather than a
- 46:27personal attack, This mental shift allows you to remain
- 46:31objective and professional during difficult conversations.
- 46:35self-assessment Reflecting on your own performance proactively
- 46:39before meeting with management. This ensures you aren't
- 46:42surprised by feedback and can lead the discussion with your
- 46:45own data. Connor, How does establishing
- 46:48this foundation change the way employees view review season?
- 46:52I knew it. Why?
- 46:56What are you doing? What?
- 47:00You deleted the. Again dude, I'm not touching
- 47:05anything. None of.
- 47:05This it changed. None of this was me.
- 47:08It changed. No, I'm right here.
- 47:11OK, anyway, what do we, what do you think about?
- 47:13Deleted. What do I think about it?
- 47:17Yeah, I mean. When you hear these terms,
- 47:22anything come to mind? No, not really.
- 47:27Performance review is a formal evaluation of your work
- 47:30behavioral contributions over a set period.
- 47:33Why is that important a set period if I'm I'm evaluating
- 47:38from the 1st of January to the 31st of December, right?
- 47:43And then next year on January 1st, well, December 31st and I'm
- 47:51being evaluated again, they bring us something from the
- 47:52previous year. You have to know when you did it
- 47:56and you can say no, that that was before such and such this
- 47:59school year, you might still be bothered by it, right?
- 48:03But that what didn't happen this year.
- 48:06So that should not come into this interview at all or this
- 48:08performance review. So keep that in mind when you
- 48:12have rules, OK, you're able to that rules on dates, you're able
- 48:20to decide this before this doesn't matter.
- 48:23After this matters, right? So keep that in mind.
- 48:31Feedback, mindset, go in there and ask.
- 48:36You don't have to ask, actually ask these words.
- 48:38But what you're asking is how can I improve?
- 48:41Not what am I doing wrong. See the difference in the
- 48:44positiveness of it? Yeah.
- 48:46How can I improve? OK, If you say how can I improve
- 48:51on this, what suggestions do you have for me?
- 48:55Hopefully they give you some good feedback, not just mean
- 49:00stuff, right? Yeah.
- 49:04Two years ago, I was really upset at work about something
- 49:08and I texted my boss and said can you call me when you have a
- 49:10chance, please? She didn't call me until like
- 49:116:30 or 7:00 at night. She's like, I'm so sorry.
- 49:14I've been So I said I know you're busy.
- 49:15If you're OK talking right now, I'm OK talking right now.
- 49:18She's like, yeah, what's going on?
- 49:19And I told her, I said, I'm not doing well.
- 49:22I am not happy right now. I said, here's what's happening.
- 49:26And she sort of laughed. And she says, I know that can be
- 49:30frustrating, Shawn. She says, how about we just
- 49:36ignore it for this year and next year you can make the changes.
- 49:41And I said, OK, but I just had to let you know I'm not happy
- 49:46right now. So there will be changes next
- 49:47year. And it was my club that we were
- 49:49talking about, right? And she's like, yeah, so I made
- 49:52those changes and I have some amazing officers in my club now
- 49:56doing everything they need to do.
- 49:58And it's, it's just a different club.
- 50:00We used to get about 8 members, maybe 7 members a year.
- 50:07This year I got 15 doubled because of what I did last year.
- 50:13So that's cool, you know, and and the proof is in the numbers,
- 50:16right? Yeah.
- 50:22OK, the numbers are what I went in with.
- 50:27OK, When you also have the self-assessment, reflecting on
- 50:34your own performance proactively before the meeting with
- 50:38managers, be realistic with yourself.
- 50:43You know when you've screwed up, right?
- 50:46Sometimes, yeah. OK, if you do something wrong,
- 50:53you usually know it's wrong. Maybe not when you do it, but
- 50:57after the fact you know you did wrong.
- 50:59Well, yeah, like if I get a process wrong, yeah, if I
- 51:05accidentally do something that I've never done before that then
- 51:09I wouldn't know it's a mistake, right?
- 51:10Till they say something, right. So.
- 51:13But if you if you doing something and you know you don't
- 51:18know what's wrong at the time, but then you realize it's wrong,
- 51:21you have to look at yourself and go, was that something I should
- 51:23have known right? Well, no.
- 51:29You can't really expect to know everything though, no?
- 51:33No, no, I didn't say no everything.
- 51:34Well, I mean, all right, technically you, dude.
- 51:41You know I love watching TikTok. I don't screw all the time,
- 51:43right? James Scroll.
- 51:45What doom scroll? That's what I said.
- 51:47Dome scroll. Doom scroll, You said?
- 51:49Dome squirrel. Dome, I'm not stupid, I know
- 51:52it's doom scroll anyway. Anyway.
- 51:56Rewind you. Need to get your ears checked.
- 51:57You want to tell that story? No, you don't want to.
- 52:02Heard the fly? We'll say this sorry for the end
- 52:07of the show. No, we won't.
- 52:07Well, it wasn't you. It was me anyway, so you got me
- 52:14sidetracked. I'm doing scrolling and I come
- 52:17across as TikTok of this woman and she says, do you know why
- 52:20college kids are leaving school after two weeks?
- 52:23Because mommy and daddy can come to the school and cry and use
- 52:27their deep voice to fix problems.
- 52:29What do you think about that? No, no.
- 52:41Think about it for a second. If your parents have always
- 52:44saved you and rescued. You.
- 52:47Oh, that's on them. When you go to college and
- 52:50you're not with them where they cannot come in, like just in the
- 52:53good example is when I was with you, we were doing registration
- 52:56and I was just saying back and then the lady said something and
- 53:00you didn't ask her the question you need to ask.
- 53:03And then I asked the question and she says I can't talk to you
- 53:06because I don't want to talk to you.
- 53:07He forgot to ask this and I said, I don't have to be in
- 53:12there. That's not I'm not here for
- 53:14that. I'm his right?
- 53:14I'm just chilling out here instead of the car.
- 53:17I said, but that's A and she says that is a good question,
- 53:22you know, and then kind of like, Oh yeah, I forgot, you know,
- 53:30with everything went on financial aid, everything I've
- 53:33said, hey, go talk to people, right?
- 53:38I'll give you some questions to ask and I follow up with you
- 53:41every now and then, but what happened yesterday, Do you
- 53:44remember? I woke up late for my.
- 53:46No, you don't. You know, you didn't wake up
- 53:48late. You forgot you had an
- 53:49appointment. Well, but even then I was, I was
- 53:51going to get there earlier because I wanted to try to get
- 53:54closer parking. Yeah, because it gets packed.
- 53:57On the concert, well, the concert, it was going to be
- 53:59worse. Yeah, but they didn't have any.
- 54:03The parking lot next to the garage was still open.
- 54:08Oh really? OK, anyway.
- 54:10That's how I'm like, I don't know, even though the concert is
- 54:13literally today. Yeah.
- 54:14And I said, hey, I thought you had a meeting at 10.
- 54:18And you said, oh, I forgot. I was like, Oh yeah, huh, I
- 54:22forgot to make the appointment. What if I hadn't reminded you?
- 54:26I just would have forgotten. But that's something you need to
- 54:28do. Right now, right, I would have
- 54:31gone out throughout the day and I would have been like, there
- 54:34was something I was supposed to do one thing.
- 54:36Yeah, one piece of advice I've given you over and over and over
- 54:40is use your Google Calendar to mark things down so you know
- 54:45what's happening. Yeah, right.
- 54:47But but what? I don't use Google Calendar.
- 54:54Use something. It can be an Apple calendar, I
- 54:56don't care. There's no one old calendar.
- 54:58The I calendar, I don't know. OK, but you need to.
- 55:05You don't do that. You're pretty good at
- 55:06remembering stuff, but you don't do that.
- 55:08I I know you don't got to say it.
- 55:11Well, I did. I I know.
- 55:14Told you so and. OK.
- 55:19But yeah, you know, look at what you can do to fix the problem so
- 55:26it doesn't happen again. Every time you there's an error,
- 55:28there's a chance for growth. Every time you do something
- 55:30wrong, there's a chance for growth, to learn.
- 55:32What did I do wrong? And I would I would tell people
- 55:35if I don't know, if I don't understand truly, like if I
- 55:38really like. I really have no clue why this
- 55:40is not happy or how he's not happy.
- 55:43Yeah. Why you're not happy, why it's
- 55:45not happening. Can you please explain it to me?
- 55:50And a good manager will a bad manager, like, I don't have time
- 55:54for that. That's your job, right?
- 55:57So I'm going to make the mistake again because you haven't told
- 56:00me what I did wrong. So we got to avoid that.
- 56:04True. OK, so as we talk about like,
- 56:07laying down the coals and our terminology and I, you hear my
- 56:10stories, I think it's always best to have another story.
- 56:13So let's talk about a story from the fire.
- 56:26Nothing is better than hearing a real life example of how someone
- 56:29navigated their review season successfully.
- 56:32Tasha kept a running log of wins and challenges.
- 56:36Consistency in documentation provided the evidence needed for
- 56:39a successful review. She walked into her review
- 56:43season fully prepared. Preparation eliminated surprises
- 56:47and allowed her to control the narrative.
- 56:49She secured a raise and a road map for growth.
- 56:53Proactive career management leads directly to tangible
- 56:56professional and financial rewards.
- 56:59Connor, what does Tasha's success tell us about the hidden
- 57:02cost of winging it? We got to do it again.
- 57:14That's the question. I don't even know what the
- 57:16question was. I saw you didn't change the
- 57:17slide so I changed it so. I was looking at the screen.
- 57:24Sorry. I changed the camera at least.
- 57:28Yeah, Yeah. So Tasha took control of the
- 57:34meeting that she the parts that she could had her log of
- 57:37accomplishments, went in there prepared, walked in and was able
- 57:41to walk out with both a raise and a road map.
- 57:45Look at this as a chance to grow.
- 57:47Go in there, show what you've done and you you should be able
- 57:53to walk out with a good review. Now, have you been doing that?
- 57:57Be that good to get a raise, but I mean.
- 57:59Well, you should always get a raise at your performance
- 58:01review. Really.
- 58:02Yeah, OK. When companies say there's no
- 58:06budget for it, you know what one one of my pet peeves is there is
- 58:14a an unspoken rule that you don't talk about your pay at
- 58:19work, right. So here's what this is.
- 58:25What happened again? Do you know those little stick
- 58:29figures that do those animations like stories?
- 58:32Yeah, OK. Like with the real life
- 58:34animator. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 58:36So I was watching one of those and the manager says, hey, I
- 58:44don't think you're, you know, qualified to be the the team
- 58:48leader. I think you still need a little
- 58:49more growth. OK, All right.
- 58:54The employee walks out couple days later that he gets a call
- 58:58or she gets a call that says hey, I need you to train the new
- 59:00boss on how to do the job and she's like last week you said I
- 59:05wasn't ready, but now I'm training the new person I.
- 59:10Don't think we're talking about the same stick fig animations.
- 59:14Well, there's different themes on them.
- 59:16OK, but you know what I'm talking about.
- 59:18Is it the red, orange, green, blue?
- 59:21There's, they're all different, Hunter.
- 59:23What do you mean they're all different?
- 59:24That's the one I see. There's more.
- 59:25There's more than one. I said the one that reacts and,
- 59:31you know, interacts with the actual animator.
- 59:34Oh, no, that's what I no, no. This this is just a skit.
- 59:38Oh, wow. OK.
- 59:39Yeah, no. And she says a week ago you
- 59:42didn't think I was ready and then and this raise for that job
- 59:47was 20,000 higher than what I'm getting paid now.
- 59:49Dang. You know, I'll train him.
- 59:53I'll teach him how to do his job, but I'm going to teach him
- 59:57like he was a Co worker, not a boss, because I don't know how
- 1:00:01to do those things. And he said yeah, you do.
- 1:00:05And she said, no, I don't because last week you said I
- 1:00:08didn't know enough to become the supervisor, but yet I'm good
- 1:00:11enough to train him. Damn.
- 1:00:14Right time to look for another job in in my day You you joined
- 1:00:20the company and you stayed there as long as you could.
- 1:00:22You never left. Really.
- 1:00:24Yeah, it's called loyalty. I mean, yeah, but then I, I
- 1:00:28don't know. But like, for example, let's
- 1:00:31just pretend I kept working at Kmart since I was a teenager.
- 1:00:36OK, that. Would have been funny.
- 1:00:41Back when in the 80s I was making 387 an hour.
- 1:00:46Damn. OK, minimum wage now is double
- 1:00:47that. Yeah, OK.
- 1:00:51I I think I'd be higher than minimum wage by by now.
- 1:00:53I'm probably be a manager and director and everything, right?
- 1:00:56But if I stay in the same position as working the floor or
- 1:00:58cashier or whatever, new people getting hired will be making
- 1:01:05more money than me. And is that fair to me?
- 1:01:09No. So if I announce starting
- 1:01:12position for this job is $10,000 and you're making eight, before
- 1:01:20I make that announcement, I need to make everyone be paying
- 1:01:23$10,000 minimum. That's how it should be, but
- 1:01:27they don't like you talking about it.
- 1:01:28So is it legal or illegal to talk about your salary at work,
- 1:01:31Hunter? It's legal.
- 1:01:32It's legal. You can talk about it.
- 1:01:35I mean, they stop you then. You know, oh wow.
- 1:01:38Maybe give us good pay. We want to talk about it.
- 1:01:41Do you know the the Superstore TV series?
- 1:01:46Yeah, OK. Every single one about the guy
- 1:01:48who gets paid like $20.00 an hour or something like that, and
- 1:01:54it was supposed to be paid like $12.00 an hour.
- 1:01:55He's making like thousands of dollars more.
- 1:01:57Oh yeah, he made. I don't remember.
- 1:02:01It doesn't. Yeah, he made like 20,000
- 1:02:03working at A at a supermarket as.
- 1:02:05A senator. And the the manager's like,
- 1:02:07we're going to have to cut your pay and pay us back.
- 1:02:10He's like, why? Maybe sometimes it's best to not
- 1:02:14talk about your salary. True, right.
- 1:02:18But he's like, I had to let people go.
- 1:02:22Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:02:26Could they do that? Yeah.
- 1:02:27Did they give you the wrong pay? Do they?
- 1:02:30Could they? Oh, they can take you back to
- 1:02:32the pay you're supposed to be at.
- 1:02:34Not going to make you repay that.
- 1:02:35I I say no. I would say no, it's already a
- 1:02:38bank account. Now if you sign a paper that
- 1:02:40says I'm going to get paid $10.00 an hour and they're
- 1:02:42paying you 15 and you don't say anything.
- 1:02:44All that. Because I'll tell you what, you
- 1:02:46would say something if I made $8 an hour and not paid my 10,
- 1:02:50right? You should also say something
- 1:02:52when you make more, and you shouldn't be paid that.
- 1:02:54Now, what I found funny is when I worked at the school district,
- 1:02:58I got paid full time, right? 40 hours a week.
- 1:03:02This is my my rate. OK, $10.00 an hour.
- 1:03:05I'll just make it easy math $400.00 a week, right?
- 1:03:07Yeah, I got 280. I'm like, whoa, this is not
- 1:03:12taxes. I know that.
- 1:03:13Oh, no, no, We take your annual salary and we break it down into
- 1:03:17payments all year long. So you get paid over the summer,
- 1:03:20You're not working. Oh, OK, Came home and I looked
- 1:03:27at my budget. Right.
- 1:03:29Yeah. Because sometimes, you know,
- 1:03:32plans don't go as we expect. Now I will tell you this also,
- 1:03:42do you wait till the following year to bring it up or should
- 1:03:44you bring it up immediately? Because again, if you're getting
- 1:03:48paid less, right, you're going to bring that up immediately.
- 1:03:53Oh yeah, immediately. You make an error, put the money
- 1:03:57in. Just like if I if you
- 1:03:59accidentally get $1,000,000 put into your bank account right?
- 1:04:04Can you spend it? Technically I could, but I
- 1:04:12shouldn't. You know what I mean?
- 1:04:18It's in my bank account and I could technically spend it.
- 1:04:22But that's theft, believe it or not, because the bank made an
- 1:04:25error and you took their money and and spent it.
- 1:04:28Well, who gave me the money though?
- 1:04:29Well, that's who would give me the.
- 1:04:31My point? Being is as soon.
- 1:04:32As you see a deposit you don't recognize, you should call the
- 1:04:35bank and say what's this money for?
- 1:04:37And then they say you work. I'm like, OK, well, and that's
- 1:04:41our fault. Oh well, you wouldn't call the
- 1:04:43bank for your work, you'd call your job for your work and say
- 1:04:45I'm getting. No, I wouldn't call the bank.
- 1:04:46No, no saying why if. You had a mysterious deposit.
- 1:04:49Yeah, I would ask the bank where did I get this from?
- 1:04:52And they said if it's from work then Oh well.
- 1:04:54Well then, then you got to go to work and talk to them.
- 1:04:57That's we just got through talking about this.
- 1:05:01That's different. That's $1,000,000.
- 1:05:04All right. Is that like instead of $3 more
- 1:05:07than I'm making an hour, $1,000,000?
- 1:05:10Yeah, keeping it. I'd quit on the spot right
- 1:05:15there. They can do anything about it
- 1:05:16now. You take the money out and just
- 1:05:19live, live off cash for the rest of your life.
- 1:05:21Yeah, I'm like, yeah, I'm gone. I don't really like the job.
- 1:05:23Can I withdraw $1,000,000 and close my bank account?
- 1:05:26No, I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
- 1:05:28OK, Withdraw $1,000,003.12. Ha ha ha ha funny ha ha ha ha ha
- 1:05:35ha. Right.
- 1:05:38Yeah, anyway. I still got to call them.
- 1:05:42I keep forgetting speaking about me forgetting stuff.
- 1:05:48Well, you know what, Speaking of that, I'm curious, have you
- 1:05:51checked that account at all? No.
- 1:05:54You haven't. I haven't opened USAA in a
- 1:05:56while. We'll do it after do it.
- 1:05:58After, well, I'm just curious real quick here.
- 1:06:00OK. Anyway, so.
- 1:06:04Yeah, it's because I haven't used an account in so long.
- 1:06:10Oh, it's 3:15. Wow.
- 1:06:11As I thought I was like 312 or 315.
- 1:06:14We we left that just we leave a minimum amount when we're not
- 1:06:17using accounts. He has a different account he
- 1:06:19uses. Yeah, it's 312.
- 1:06:21I'm sorry, that was off by three cents.
- 1:06:23I just want to show you the number.
- 1:06:25That's that's why it's relevant. Yeah.
- 1:06:28Would have any other accounts 50 cents $0.50 Thirty cents yeah,
- 1:06:32just. Whatever the years, he would say
- 1:06:34that much. No, we don't.
- 1:06:35But yeah, so anyway, near here nor there, let's let's talk
- 1:06:41about real quick about those actionable steps we can take to
- 1:06:45help us during the review, OK? Now that the foundation is laid,
- 1:06:58let's cover the actionable steps you can take to manage your
- 1:07:01review season effectively. Keep a running wins and lessons
- 1:07:05log throughout the year to capture specific metrics and
- 1:07:08anecdotes while they are fresh, preventing recency bias from
- 1:07:12skewing your evaluation. Review your job description and
- 1:07:16annual goals regularly to ensure your daily tasks actually move
- 1:07:20the needle on the KPI's your manager cares about most.
- 1:07:23Ask clarifying questions during the meeting and take detailed
- 1:07:27notes on requested improvements so you have a concrete action
- 1:07:30plan for the next 6 months. Connor, how do these mapped out
- 1:07:34steps transform an intimidating corporate meeting into a
- 1:07:38strategic career discussion? I don't.
- 1:07:41Know I'm getting tired of it already.
- 1:07:49I told you, yeah. So keep a running list of the
- 1:07:52list. We already talked about this.
- 1:07:53Now preventing recency bias. Have you ever heard of that
- 1:07:56term? Before no.
- 1:07:57Recency bias is they do an evaluation based on what you've
- 1:08:02done recently. So like let's say you have a
- 1:08:04perfect year, a perfect year, and the week before the
- 1:08:08interview you do a a major error when you do the interview.
- 1:08:13How should that be weighed? I don't.
- 1:08:19Know OK if you have 51 weeks of doing good in one week of bad.
- 1:08:24Your interview needs to reflect that.
- 1:08:26You need to talk about all the good stuff, and there's one bad
- 1:08:28stuff. Oh yeah, 1 bad day, bad week,
- 1:08:32whatever you want to call it, right?
- 1:08:35So reason C bias is something is that's real and you got to avoid
- 1:08:39that by bringing up the other 51 weeks.
- 1:08:42Review your job description and annual goals regularly to ensure
- 1:08:45your daily tasks move the needle on the KPIs.
- 1:08:51Now. I love that KPIs.
- 1:08:54Any idea what that means? No key performance indicators.
- 1:08:59Oh. All right, Review your job
- 1:09:02description and annual goals and readily ensure your daily tasks
- 1:09:05actually move the needle on the KPI your manager cares about the
- 1:09:10most. So if you know they're looking
- 1:09:12at something specifically, make sure you're doing those things
- 1:09:15and the rest of your job, but make sure those are prominent,
- 1:09:18OK? Yeah.
- 1:09:20And last but not least, ask clarifying questions during the
- 1:09:22meeting and take detailed notes on requested improvements.
- 1:09:25So you have a concreted action plan for the next 6 months or a
- 1:09:29year or three months or whenever the next one comes, right?
- 1:09:35What do you think about that? Taking notes during your
- 1:09:37performance interview? I mean, and your manager says,
- 1:09:42what are you writing? You say I'm taking notes on what
- 1:09:45I need to improve, right? Can you go in there and say, I
- 1:09:50want to record this meeting just so I don't have to take notes?
- 1:09:53You know, like AI scribe, they don't want anything on record.
- 1:09:58Right. So sometimes managers see you
- 1:10:00writing and they're like, hey, what are you writing?
- 1:10:03Careful, You know what I mean? I'm just writing notes on how to
- 1:10:09improve. But it could also be writing
- 1:10:11notes on what they're saying about you.
- 1:10:12Like, for example, walking into the job interview and saying I
- 1:10:14didn't have, he didn't have a feel that when I walked in,
- 1:10:17could have gone to my boss and said that and got him in
- 1:10:18trouble. Yeah, totally.
- 1:10:22They'd do it. Notes and not pity like that.
- 1:10:25But yeah, avoid Regency bias, keep your list of wins and
- 1:10:30you'll see things will get better.
- 1:10:33OK, I I'll tell you what it is 1110.
- 1:10:37We're going to take another quick break.
- 1:10:39Well, it's actually a little bit of a longer break.
- 1:10:40It's been a while and we'll be back after the break.
- 1:10:44It's time for a break. Hot takes with the Murph man
- 1:10:46will return after these messages.

- 1:16:06Just stay locked in. Yes, sorry, stay locked in.
- 1:16:11Sorry. During the break, we had some
- 1:16:12packages delivered. I'm getting a new camera and I
- 1:16:18know you can't see this, but there's no measurements on it,
- 1:16:22right? So if you look here on this
- 1:16:25right here, this is a little camera.
- 1:16:26It's my little 4K camera. OK, I'm upgrading our system and
- 1:16:32we got this this box about this big right?
- 1:16:37And I told Connor, look at the picture and it looks like it
- 1:16:40says the controller, right? Like ATV controller.
- 1:16:43I mean, yeah, but at the same time, obviously it's not going
- 1:16:46to be the same size. Why?
- 1:16:48Well, OK, a little bigger maybe, but it's not as big as it looks
- 1:16:54anyway, so that's what we're joking about right now.
- 1:16:57Stay locked in. All right, so we've been, we've
- 1:17:01been talking about the the steps you can take and the terms we've
- 1:17:09used. Let's talk about those pitfalls
- 1:17:11that we can have in our statement called Where You'll
- 1:17:14Get Burned. It is just as important to
- 1:17:25understand the common pitfalls that might occur so you can
- 1:17:28avoid trouble during your evaluation.
- 1:17:30Going in blind without data, making it impossible to advocate
- 1:17:35for raises or promotions as you'll be relying entirely on
- 1:17:38your manager's memory of your work.
- 1:17:41Getting defensive when hearing critique signals a lack of
- 1:17:45professional maturity and can discourage mentors from
- 1:17:48providing the honest feedback you need to level up.
- 1:17:52Ignoring actionable feedback post meeting creates A
- 1:17:55stagnation cycle where the same issues reappear in every review,
- 1:18:00eventually limiting your career trajectory.
- 1:18:03Connor What makes professionals fall into these exact emotional
- 1:18:07traps year after year? Go ahead, do I have to answer
- 1:18:17it? Yeah.
- 1:18:21I don't even know. Just not communicating with
- 1:18:24anyone, OK. That's honestly the big thing
- 1:18:28that everybody falls through is just not communicating.
- 1:18:31Not communicate. Not communicating wins, right?
- 1:18:34Or just anything. Well, yeah.
- 1:18:37All right, so go in and blame without data makes it impossible
- 1:18:39to advocate for raises or promotions when your boss says
- 1:18:42what have you? How have you seen yourself in
- 1:18:44the last six months? If I go in there and say, well,
- 1:18:47I haven't met my numbers, but I've been in a really good job.
- 1:18:52How would you have a good job or how are you doing a good job if
- 1:18:55you don't have good numbers? When I was counselling, I got
- 1:19:00the numbers right. Yeah.
- 1:19:04Of how many people I saw, if I didn't see enough people or
- 1:19:08enough time, I'd have bad numbers.
- 1:19:12Doing a good job as a counselor, just not able to see as many as
- 1:19:15I wanted to. OK.
- 1:19:18Right. So when she says so why are you
- 1:19:22so low? And I said I don't know.
- 1:19:29I don't know man, you tell me. I, I, I didn't lie to him when
- 1:19:37they believe the system or anything, you know what I mean?
- 1:19:39Yeah. There was Co worker who did and
- 1:19:44I caught him one day and I reported him and they didn't do
- 1:19:46anything. Then later on he got fired.
- 1:19:48I'm like after I left. So again, after I leave,
- 1:19:51everything comes out clear because I, you know, I bring
- 1:19:53stuff up and nobody listens to me.
- 1:19:55But I end up getting fired too. So, but yeah.
- 1:20:01You, you want to be prepared, you want to have your data so
- 1:20:03you know what you've done. If you, if you have a job that
- 1:20:05requires numbers, you want to have the numbers.
- 1:20:07If a job requires evaluations, you want your evaluations to be
- 1:20:11good, right? So what they would do with us is
- 1:20:15after we close the case three months later, they would call in
- 1:20:19and say, how is your child doing?
- 1:20:21And most of the time I got pretty good reviews.
- 1:20:23Every now and then I have one parent say he didn't help me,
- 1:20:26right? And my boss said, what do you
- 1:20:28think? Shawna said.
- 1:20:28I'll tell you what, do me a favor and call that kid.
- 1:20:31And ask them and ask the kid Or is it the whole point to ask how
- 1:20:37the counselors is doing and the job?
- 1:20:39Yeah, but they're calling the parents, not the kid.
- 1:20:41Oh, well then, yeah. And I said, do me a favor.
- 1:20:45Can you call that kid? And she's like, and what am I
- 1:20:50going to say? Say, you know, at randomly I'm
- 1:20:54picking cases to call myself just to see how things are
- 1:20:57going. You know, how how do you think
- 1:21:00Sean helped you? You know, and kid comes back
- 1:21:03with an amazing story. Or sometimes you have kids that
- 1:21:06go He tried, you know, sometimes just have kids that go Nah, he
- 1:21:12didn't help anything. My parents are still the same,
- 1:21:15you know, OK, but I said go. Whenever I had those negative
- 1:21:19situations like that, I would always tell her to call the kid
- 1:21:22because the kids McClain, the family is too, but the kid is
- 1:21:24the one I'm working for. A very protective kids, you
- 1:21:28know. We're just good, yeah.
- 1:21:31Yeah, getting defensive when hearing critique signals the
- 1:21:35lack of professional maturity and can discourage mentors from
- 1:21:38providing the honest feedback you need to level up.
- 1:21:43Why would they talk to you if you're having an attitude toward
- 1:21:45them, right? And last but not least, ignoring
- 1:21:48actionable feedback post meeting creates A stagnation cycle where
- 1:21:52the same issues reappear every review.
- 1:21:54OK. And one of the questions that
- 1:21:57they would ask me is what have you done to improve your
- 1:22:04counseling with a certain type of case like kids who are
- 1:22:08rebellious because I I wasn't too good at it.
- 1:22:14Do you know I wasn't too good at it?
- 1:22:16Well, I mean, you weren't supposed to do kids well first
- 1:22:19place for a job. So, OK, but yeah, well, yeah, I
- 1:22:22didn't go to the training for kids.
- 1:22:24You're right, but that's not the point.
- 1:22:25But I don't know. Because it was me, I was
- 1:22:29counselling because I was a bad kid, right?
- 1:22:35So I'd see these kids and they would trigger me, and my boss
- 1:22:38knew not to give me those cases when possible, right?
- 1:22:43When possible, but there's still some that.
- 1:22:45Yeah, I had to take him and I tried my best and, you know, but
- 1:22:48it was the same issue over and over because I got better.
- 1:22:50I just, I always felt that was my my kryptonite, you know, and
- 1:22:55you've heard me say, like with all the things we've been
- 1:22:58through, I'm getting back to my normal and now I'm, I'm beyond
- 1:23:02back where I I was, right. But yeah, you want to be able to
- 1:23:08do that and have your your boss review you and give you feedback
- 1:23:16and accept it. Now you don't have to agree with
- 1:23:18it. You can say, OK, I'll change
- 1:23:20that. But I don't think that's what
- 1:23:22the problem is. And the next question was going
- 1:23:24to be what? So what do you think the problem
- 1:23:26is? And that's where the solution
- 1:23:27comes in. OK, makes sense.
- 1:23:32Yeah. All right, let's talk about
- 1:23:34those heat Shields that are going to protect us from getting
- 1:23:36burned and falling to those pitfalls.
- 1:23:47Now that we know where you can get burned, let's talk about the
- 1:23:50strategies you can deploy to protect yourself during the
- 1:23:53evaluation. Active listening without
- 1:23:56emotional reactivity protects your professional reputation and
- 1:23:59helps you uncover the hidden needs of your department.
- 1:24:03Structured post review goal setting turns vague feedback
- 1:24:06into a timed checklist, ensuring you show measurable growth
- 1:24:10before the next check in. Connor How do these Shields keep
- 1:24:14our listeners cool under pressure?
- 1:24:19They keep the listeners cool because we're showing them what
- 1:24:24to do for the next day. OK, something like that.
- 1:24:30You're trying. I'm trying.
- 1:24:32The thing is again, for those of you.
- 1:24:34Who? This is odd Genuine.
- 1:24:35This is not scripted at all. He didn't know I was going to be
- 1:24:38calling on him every episode, every slide.
- 1:24:41When I heard the first one, I was like, is going to be a well,
- 1:24:44all the sides are going to say something, Huh.
- 1:24:45And he was like, I don't know, maybe Guess we got to find out.
- 1:24:52What did I, what do you remember when the first episode I turned,
- 1:24:55Tina said something like Abrilski, what's up or
- 1:24:56something? And you're like, what?
- 1:24:59It was back in the other house, Yeah, because I was on my phone
- 1:25:04and then. Oh yeah, that's what it was.
- 1:25:06We. Usually talk about it after so I
- 1:25:08don't really pay attention to the voice over.
- 1:25:10It's not his job to do those podcasts, right?
- 1:25:11He's helping me with the production and everything.
- 1:25:14But he you know, I need someone to talk to.
- 1:25:16Yeah, and he adds some stuff once in a while that I don't
- 1:25:20know of. Yeah, so don't, don't make it
- 1:25:23look bad on him, but I'm I'm messing with him.
- 1:25:25I'm not expecting to know any of these answers, but I will say
- 1:25:28this intentional preparation and pre search your achievements
- 1:25:33against what the bosses need. So like for example, if the
- 1:25:35bosses are saying what are your quarterly reports every week,
- 1:25:38I'm asking you, what's your weekly report?
- 1:25:39What's your weekly report? Popcorn.
- 1:25:41Then you have a monthly report and then you have a quarterly
- 1:25:43report, right? Yeah.
- 1:25:45You can actually set it up that way.
- 1:25:47Here's all my weekly accomplishments.
- 1:25:49Here's what I've done month, week, monthly, and here's what I
- 1:25:51did for the quarter, Right, because you're using their
- 1:25:55evaluation. When I was in the Army, I, I get
- 1:25:58inspected for my NBC stuff, nuclear, biological, chemical
- 1:26:01stuff. And the way I had it set up was
- 1:26:04I got the, the assessment from the person, right?
- 1:26:08Because they use all the same 1. And I lined up all my books or
- 1:26:14bookmark folder, what are they called binders, all my binders
- 1:26:19together. And about halfway through, I had
- 1:26:23some doughnuts and some coffee, and then more binders.
- 1:26:27So people would come in and they would look at the report, and
- 1:26:30it's the first time, right? They'd be like, hey, where can I
- 1:26:33find this in the first binder, OK.
- 1:26:34And they'd look at it and put it back.
- 1:26:36OK, next thing, next thing, next thing, you know, OK, where's
- 1:26:38that binder here? All right.
- 1:26:42And by the third time they were coming by, they were like, OK,
- 1:26:45binder #1 they just open up the binders in order.
- 1:26:48And there was like, in order, exactly what they were looking
- 1:26:51for, right? Always got great reviews.
- 1:26:58When I left the the guy who took over for me, he did his his
- 1:27:03review and he did OK. He didn't really do great, but
- 1:27:07the the person in the review complained there was no Donuts.
- 1:27:12You got to, you got to sweeten the deal a little bit, right?
- 1:27:15Just a little bit. All right, so active listening
- 1:27:18without emotional reactivity protects your professional
- 1:27:20reputation and helps you uncover the hidden needs.
- 1:27:24OK and structured post review goal setting turns vague
- 1:27:29feedback into a timed checklist, ensuring your measurable growth
- 1:27:34before the next check in. If you're not working on it, if
- 1:27:38you don't have these, OK, these are my goals.
- 1:27:39You don't know what you're what you're trying to get to, right?
- 1:27:43Yeah. I have to do certain things.
- 1:27:45These are my goals. True.
- 1:27:47OK, let's see what path I need to take to get there.
- 1:27:56And you can do it, OK? It's not that hard, right?
- 1:28:00Yeah. But it it takes effort.
- 1:28:05It takes effort, right? So let's talk about the episode
- 1:28:11today and our questions for reflection in our segment called
- 1:28:15the Afterburn. Before we wrap up, we need to
- 1:28:27reflect on the key questions that will help you internalize
- 1:28:30today's lesson. Looking back at the last 12
- 1:28:33months, what specific project am I most proud of and how did it
- 1:28:38directly contribute to the team's success?
- 1:28:41When I look at past critiques, what recurring themes emerge,
- 1:28:45and what does that tell me about my professional blind spots?
- 1:28:49If I could master only one new skill this year to radically
- 1:28:53increase my market value, what would it be?
- 1:28:55And what is the first step toward that mastery?
- 1:28:59Connor, which of these reflection prompts do you think
- 1:29:02hits hardest for professionals early in their careers?
- 1:29:07I would have to say honestly, someone that doesn't work.
- 1:29:16I don't know. I would say the second one
- 1:29:18looking at the past critiques. Well, recurring things emerge.
- 1:29:21That's that's one thing if you're not fixing.
- 1:29:22That's the most important. Thing if you're not fixing the
- 1:29:25problem I I agree with you on that if.
- 1:29:27You keep seeing there's a problem, then obviously that's
- 1:29:30going to worry you, so you have to fix it first.
- 1:29:32Right. So let's let's look at the first
- 1:29:35statement though, looking back to 12 months, what specific
- 1:29:38project are you most proud proud of and how it did directly
- 1:29:41contribute to the team's success, Right.
- 1:29:45Knowing what you do good starting with that is important.
- 1:29:50OK, When you look at pass critiques, what recurring themes
- 1:29:53emerge? Can you turn off notifications
- 1:29:56please? Yeah.
- 1:29:59When you look at pass critiques, what recurring themes emerge and
- 1:30:01what does it tell me about my professional blind spots?
- 1:30:05And you can master one new skill is here to radically increase
- 1:30:08your market value. What would it be and what was
- 1:30:10the first step toward the mastery?
- 1:30:11OK, so First off, looking at those blind spots, if you
- 1:30:19actually go in there, do yourself assessment, go into the
- 1:30:22review, get a good feedback, make a plan for growth.
- 1:30:26Those blind spots should slowly go away right yesterday.
- 1:30:34Well, let me let me finish the last question.
- 1:30:36What new skill do I want to learn?
- 1:30:38OK. A year ago I took on this
- 1:30:41project, if you will, this podcast, and I had to learn a
- 1:30:46lot of new skills. Can you agree on that?
- 1:30:48OK. Yeah.
- 1:30:51I'm not done learning, I'm still working on it.
- 1:30:54Yeah, we're trying new stuff. But when I started my business a
- 1:30:57couple of weeks ago, I decided to make a job for me as an MC
- 1:31:06and host of parties, right? And this one lady saw me at a
- 1:31:10meeting and she's like, I want to work with you.
- 1:31:12It's great. Do you have a business card?
- 1:31:13And I just started. I don't even know what I'm doing
- 1:31:15yet, right? I went to the dance hall.
- 1:31:19I met her family, father and daughter.
- 1:31:21They all work together. And then on Sunday last week,
- 1:31:25she calls me and she's like, are I need your help?
- 1:31:28We have an event. And I said, OK, I'll swing by to
- 1:31:31on Tuesday, you know, and we talked and everything.
- 1:31:34We were there for that meeting. I went back yesterday because I
- 1:31:38need to get the USB from the guy because I'm going to be doing
- 1:31:42some video editing for the for the quince.
- 1:31:45And he was like, yeah, you said e-mail it.
- 1:31:49I, I, I really don't know how to attach files.
- 1:31:52And you said, you know, put in the cloud and share your folder
- 1:31:55with me. I don't even know what that
- 1:31:56means. And you know, and we started
- 1:31:58talking and I said, do you e-mail?
- 1:32:02Well, yeah, but. Only on Sky.
- 1:32:05Do you have a website? He's like, no, I was like, how
- 1:32:10are you promoting your your hall?
- 1:32:13Why pay for it? Whatever.
- 1:32:14OK, Because you need a website. And I said, you know, and he's
- 1:32:18like, I don't know about any of that stuff.
- 1:32:20I said, I can teach you. That's not hard.
- 1:32:22If if you really want to learn, it's not hard.
- 1:32:24You just have to get used to how to do it because it's a little
- 1:32:26different. And he's like, OK, and he says,
- 1:32:32and you're going to edit the video.
- 1:32:34Yeah, if you're a production, something I do, he's like, oh,
- 1:32:37we can add that to your package. I'm not that.
- 1:32:39I'm not a professional. I can do little stuff.
- 1:32:42And then we started talking about doing comedy and stuff in
- 1:32:45the show. And I tell him I'm doing my
- 1:32:46trivia now. And, you know, he was like, man,
- 1:32:49we got to sit on like for lunch and then just talk.
- 1:32:52I said, yes, we've definitely got to do that.
- 1:32:57So I tell him, you know, maybe next month we can get together
- 1:33:00and see what's up. You know, yeah, let's see how
- 1:33:03tomorrow goes for the event. Yeah.
- 1:33:05And then, yeah, we'll see if he still wants to talk to you or
- 1:33:07not. Yeah.
- 1:33:08Right. But he was like, you know, as
- 1:33:10soon as the lady came in and told me what I needed, I knew
- 1:33:14you could do it. I just didn't know if you could
- 1:33:15do with the time frame. I said that's a Sunday and I
- 1:33:18don't have anything around Sunday night.
- 1:33:19So except Sunday Night Football for next week, Could you mind if
- 1:33:24I have my phone with me? And what's going to be funny is,
- 1:33:28you know, I'm going to ask any football fans here.
- 1:33:30Yeah, Well, the score of the game is this.
- 1:33:31Oh, thank you. You know.
- 1:33:32Imagine. Not imagine I'm going to do it
- 1:33:35because I like to be funny. Sean What?
- 1:33:37There's no game Sunday. The first game of the week is
- 1:33:41Wednesday. It's next week, dude.
- 1:33:47Again, All right, so nevermind, I won't do that.
- 1:33:55That's funny. First game of the week is on
- 1:33:59Wednesday guys. Next Wednesday.
- 1:34:02This Wednesday. Well, yeah, this Wednesday.
- 1:34:05You're right, Connor. Hey, you said it.
- 1:34:10You said it. I did.
- 1:34:14That's always like, uh, no, no, it's not.
- 1:34:17It's Wednesday. Anyway, so, but he's like, you
- 1:34:23can definitely be, you know, do some stuff here and there.
- 1:34:26So. But I learned all these new
- 1:34:27skills and I'm constantly learning and evolving and
- 1:34:31getting equipment and upgrading. I'm at the point now where I'm
- 1:34:35like, OK, I got some really awesome cameras and they're
- 1:34:39going to be really cool. Yeah, but we'll have those set
- 1:34:47up in a couple weeks because I got to do some other stuff.
- 1:34:51But if we can do this, that it's going to be really cool.
- 1:34:52It's going to be really cool, right?
- 1:34:56Yeah. All right, so let's talk about
- 1:34:59Speaking of technology, Let's talk about the digital inferno.
- 1:35:01All right, this is where we talk about technology that will help
- 1:35:05us in our performance reviews. So pay attention.
- 1:35:18Finally, let's discuss the technology and software
- 1:35:21available to help you streamline your review preparation and
- 1:35:25career tracking. Use Notion or Evernote to build
- 1:35:28a searchable brag book that allows you to tag achievements
- 1:35:32by skill set, making review preparation a 5 minute task.
- 1:35:36Dedicated Slack and e-mail folders for archived praise act
- 1:35:40as a source of third party validation that can be
- 1:35:43screenshotted and shared during performance discussions.
- 1:35:47Automated weekly reminders for progress updates force you to
- 1:35:50reflect regularly, ensuring no project or milestone falls
- 1:35:54through the cracks over a long year.
- 1:35:57Connor How do these digital tools take the guesswork out of
- 1:36:00tracking your career progression?
- 1:36:10What? No, I'm just laughing because
- 1:36:11it's back at you. It's always back at me, isn't
- 1:36:14it? I don't even know.
- 1:36:18Yeah, I don't know. Again, guys.
- 1:36:20So notion. Genuine Notion in Evernote to
- 1:36:24build a searchable database with your skill sets.
- 1:36:26You know. Have you gone on LinkedIn at
- 1:36:28all? Con, I don't think you have
- 1:36:30right. Do I even have an account so I
- 1:36:34don't know the e-mail? You know, we talked about that.
- 1:36:40This is your question, doesn't. IT parents don't do everything
- 1:36:42for their kids, right? Anyway, you can have skill sets
- 1:36:47added to your profile so when someone looks for that skill
- 1:36:50set, your information pops up OK.
- 1:36:53You can also use that on Evernote and Notion to build it
- 1:36:56yourself. Dedicated slacker e-mail
- 1:36:59folders? What?
- 1:36:59What does that mean? Well you can make a folder that
- 1:37:02anytime you get a new e-mail about appraise, you move into
- 1:37:09that folder so you can review it at the end of the year.
- 1:37:12I have my folders at school by year and semester.
- 1:37:18It's more so when a kid comes in and says, hey, Mr. Murphy,
- 1:37:22whatever, whatever. I'm like, oh, I have that in
- 1:37:24this. Excuse me, I have it on this
- 1:37:27e-mail. OK.
- 1:37:29And last but not least, automated weekly reminders of
- 1:37:31progress updates. You, you want to keep that, keep
- 1:37:34track of those things that you're doing, right?
- 1:37:38A project you're working on or something, right?
- 1:37:40Yeah. You can say, OK, my deadline is
- 1:37:42this, how's it? How am I doing?
- 1:37:44My deadline is this. How am I doing?
- 1:37:46OK. Once you do that, you'll keep
- 1:37:51track of it a lot better, right? Yeah.
- 1:37:55No. So any other technology you can
- 1:37:57think of that would do that? No.
- 1:38:01No, I don't think so. I think you could also use like
- 1:38:04calendar and and put in your the day today.
- 1:38:07This happened today, this happened today.
- 1:38:10This like a journal sort of I. Mean, yeah, but Oh yeah, you
- 1:38:14could look at the list. Yeah, you can, yeah.
- 1:38:17But I don't know, I don't think the calendar app would be used
- 1:38:20for that. You could just make a list of
- 1:38:22word or something, right? Google doc or whatever.
- 1:38:24Like a like a journal Like this week or this day, Sunday, August
- 1:38:3126th, 2020, Sixth. You know, a journal is something
- 1:38:38that I'm going to put it is good to have, but people don't like
- 1:38:46to do it. You don't have to talk about
- 1:38:48your emotions or anything like that, but a journal for all your
- 1:38:51wins, not just you know, of your day, how it went.
- 1:38:54No, it's like today. This happened with this guy.
- 1:38:57This happened with this girl. This happened with, you know, or
- 1:39:00I did this. Hey, I'm really proud because I
- 1:39:02solved this problem. You know, right.
- 1:39:05That's that's not that's the kind of journal I'm talking
- 1:39:07about. Not like all today I was sad
- 1:39:10because. Today you woke up feeling
- 1:39:12depressed. Yeah, it's a Monday.
- 1:39:15Right. And I don't want to go to work,
- 1:39:19but yeah, So think about those things, OK?
- 1:39:23And when we come back, we'll wrap up the show all.
- 1:39:28Right. It's time for
- 1:39:41The station where our veterans voices are heard.

- 1:44:50Find us on Roku channel. I don't know.
- 1:44:55Yeah. You thought I forgot to say
- 1:44:56that, right? Yeah.
- 1:44:57Yeah, I know. I forgot you.
- 1:45:00I thought that was the last one. Not Yeah.
- 1:45:02I was like, yeah, guys, trivia. Well, I'm going to put them all
- 1:45:06together now, but. That's so funny.
- 1:45:09I've been working on another project.
- 1:45:10I haven't been worried about the radios, but so, yeah, you know,
- 1:45:14we've been talking about this performance review and how you
- 1:45:16can improve and how you can be prepared for it.
- 1:45:19There's no correct answer here, OK?
- 1:45:21You can literally do it any way you want to do it.
- 1:45:25Keep that in mind. OK, these are tips that I
- 1:45:29researched to bring to you. Now, one thing I will tell you
- 1:45:33is there's a guy on TikTok, his name is George Stern.
- 1:45:37He he does use a lot of adult language.
- 1:45:39Just giving you a heads up on that.
- 1:45:41But he reads text messages between the boss and an employee
- 1:45:47and they're always horrible text messages.
- 1:45:50Like I know it's late, it's 10:45, but I need something for
- 1:45:53tomorrow morning type thing, you know what I mean?
- 1:45:56Like. Yeah, and then the one with the
- 1:45:59wife. Oh well, yeah.
- 1:46:02God, dude. Your your wife is having surgery
- 1:46:06or having a baby. Yeah, she's going to labor,
- 1:46:08guys. You, you, you can.
- 1:46:09You can work until the baby gets there, right?
- 1:46:11Like what? What do you mean no?
- 1:46:13I'm going to take some time and make sure my wife is good, but
- 1:46:17he says he's going to be there doing nothing.
- 1:46:19Might as well work, right? No.
- 1:46:21Yeah, or like, hey, I'm going to have to take some time off every
- 1:46:25Friday afternoon because I, I want to be with my wife at
- 1:46:27chemo. Well, why do you want to be with
- 1:46:30her at chemo like? OK, I can't believe people
- 1:46:35actually asked. Oh my God, watch this George
- 1:46:37Stern. I don't want to watch it.
- 1:46:39You watch this stuff and it's dumbfounding how many managers
- 1:46:43are out there that don't know what they're doing.
- 1:46:44And he tells you like, I hope this person is is planning on
- 1:46:49leaving or he reads between the lines and he says he just called
- 1:46:52you out, you know, So that's what makes it funny.
- 1:46:54It's good. It's cool to watch.
- 1:46:56But if you have a chance, go watch George, George, George.
- 1:47:01George Stern. If you have a chance, go watch
- 1:47:05George Stern's channel on managers and employees and text
- 1:47:09message and threads and everything.
- 1:47:11That's what I got a lot of my stories today for, you know,
- 1:47:14really. Yeah.
- 1:47:15I say, I saw TikTok about this, this, I'm talking about him in a
- 1:47:18lot of them. And you know, and you can say,
- 1:47:22oh, they're all fake. You know what?
- 1:47:23I don't care if they're fake or not.
- 1:47:24They could be, but people would actually do that.
- 1:47:27Right, like. Wouldn't be surprised.
- 1:47:30There's a a new trend on TikTok. I don't, I don't think you've
- 1:47:33seen them, but they had like customer service agents talking
- 1:47:36to the customer about errors and problems.
- 1:47:39And they've you, you, you see their side of the conversation.
- 1:47:43You hear their side. You don't hear what they're
- 1:47:45really talking about. But like, it's funny.
- 1:47:48This one person says, I got charged $18,000 for a boat.
- 1:47:52I never bought a boat. You know, I'm, I'm disputing the
- 1:47:55charge on my credit card. And the girl's like, OK, so
- 1:48:00there's a contract that had to be signed and it was signed by
- 1:48:02you. Oh, someone forged your
- 1:48:03signature. They had to present an ID.
- 1:48:07The ID looks a lot like Hugos. There must be a forgery too.
- 1:48:13OK. And they use your credit card.
- 1:48:16They actually swiped it there or tapped it, whatever.
- 1:48:19He's like, they they must have cloned my card, you know, and
- 1:48:25she's like, oh, they cloned your card.
- 1:48:27You know, you don't hear their side of the conversation, but
- 1:48:29she repeats what they say. And it's it's funny because I
- 1:48:33know this is real stuff. And what's saying Connor if if
- 1:48:35you know? Look up Red Nickel Comedy.
- 1:48:45What? Red Nixle comedy and then put
- 1:48:49Bill I want I want to try to get his name right.
- 1:48:54I I hate this computer. My computer keyboard.
- 1:48:57Bill Burr. No, not no, not Bill Burr.
- 1:48:59Bill and. Angle.
- 1:49:02That's right. Angle.
- 1:49:03He has a skin. He has about.
- 1:49:05Here's your sign and he talks about all the stupid things and
- 1:49:10he has this this video, this this thing like this lady walks
- 1:49:14into and he drives into a a tire shop and the person states the
- 1:49:20obvious. The tire go flat.
- 1:49:22He was no, I was driving around the other three just swelled
- 1:49:24right up on me. You know, but he talks about
- 1:49:29warning signs on labels right, like a hair dryers dryer.
- 1:49:34Do not use in the shower like to us some common sense.
- 1:49:39There's just some people that well well, I'm I'm washing out
- 1:49:43dry my hair. Try to kill two birds with one
- 1:49:46stone. Not really.
- 1:49:47They'll electrocute him. If you have a chance watch
- 1:49:52billing. We'll go look him up.
- 1:49:54He's funny as hell, but his here's your science skit talks
- 1:49:58about the stupidity of people and George turns TikTok talks
- 1:50:04about this the media managers. So keep that in mind.
- 1:50:08Yeah, people are idiots. Yeah, I'll tell you.
- 1:50:11That. Surprises me also.
- 1:50:13What surprises you that they can be that stupid?
- 1:50:14Yes, honestly. Or they just don't care and they
- 1:50:20just ruins it for everybody else.
- 1:50:24I mean, because they might not be stupid.
- 1:50:26They might. They know what they're doing and
- 1:50:28they just don't care. But for us, since, you know, we
- 1:50:32follow the rules, it's like, wow.
- 1:50:35You know, you, you say we, we follow the rules for the most
- 1:50:38part. We do have a we have a pretty
- 1:50:39good moral compass. Can you agree on that?
- 1:50:42We know we want to treat people right.
- 1:50:44Yeah, but people are just being stupid like that and then almost
- 1:50:50injure us or act stupid towards us.
- 1:50:53Then obviously you know that compass goes down.
- 1:50:56We, we have a, we have a friend that came from California and he
- 1:51:00says, you know, one thing that about El Paso that really amazes
- 1:51:03me is how safe your streets are. And I said, how long you been
- 1:51:09here? It was about 3 months.
- 1:51:12Ever heard of fit Fan? If you guys don't know, I mean
- 1:51:15mostly not from El Paso but go to Fit Fan El Paso and it's like
- 1:51:20the gossip of El Paso. Yeah, it's the news for El Paso,
- 1:51:24for like, small businesses, traffic crashes.
- 1:51:29The major news gets broken there first.
- 1:51:32Yeah, before. Like Kay Fox.
- 1:51:33Yeah, before any of the major news outlets and they have bad
- 1:51:37drivers, they have stories of what happened ahead of time.
- 1:51:40I'm trying to think what wasn't the most recent one.
- 1:51:46I'm trying to think there was a story that we were talking
- 1:51:48about. Deranged man at Jefferson
- 1:51:52shooting by Andrews, stabbing at America's.
- 1:51:58No, there was, there was something we were talking about
- 1:51:59Stupid. Did you see this video by this
- 1:52:01person? Oh the cop on the side of the
- 1:52:03road, Remember he was giving a ticket and the car hit got hit
- 1:52:06from behind. Oh yeah.
- 1:52:08If you see Patrol live, you can go back and there's this El Paso
- 1:52:11cop that does it, but he's literally talking to the guy.
- 1:52:14And it's funny because he drives up and he's singing the song
- 1:52:16and, you know, talks to the guy and he says, do you know why I
- 1:52:21pulled you over? And at that moment, a car hits
- 1:52:23him from behind and hits the car.
- 1:52:26The cop's fine. You know they were joking and
- 1:52:27also like they were actually like making small conversation.
- 1:52:30And the cop turns around and you see there's a space between his
- 1:52:34motorcycle and the guardrail where the car could have hit
- 1:52:40him. You know, like that little bit
- 1:52:42of space. They were off the freeway.
- 1:52:45I I, you know, I don't even know how it all happened, but that
- 1:52:48broke that that video was out so fast on fit fam.
- 1:52:52You know, it's like you hear the all the stuff that happens
- 1:52:54before it breaks the news. You know, people have dash Cam.
- 1:52:57They have, you know, here's the video what happened last night.
- 1:52:59You know they can't show that on the news, but they can show it
- 1:53:02on fit fam, right. But the stupidness of people.
- 1:53:08You can see it on fit fam, can't you?
- 1:53:12So watch fit fam El Paso, you guys so recommended billing
- 1:53:15involved. Here's your sign, George Stern,
- 1:53:18poor managers and fit fan El Paso for all the Cheeseman El
- 1:53:22Paso. All right, let's get let's hear
- 1:53:25today's final burn. Before we end the show, here is
- 1:53:37our final burn for today. Feedback isn't failure, it's
- 1:53:41fuel. Walk in prepared, walk out
- 1:53:44empowered, and use every single note to sharpen your
- 1:53:48professional edge. Oh wow.
- 1:53:52I told you, not all of them. The last one, OK.
- 1:53:57And this one he was actually prepared for.
- 1:53:58He was reading. He's like, OK, I'm listening
- 1:54:00and. I know I'm like, I wonder.
- 1:54:02I wonder what he's going to ask me now.
- 1:54:06So remember going into the meeting, don't look at it as a
- 1:54:08negative thing, OK? You know, if you're doing a good
- 1:54:10job, you know you're doing a bad job.
- 1:54:12OK? If you're doing a bad job, be
- 1:54:13prepared to hear some bad stuff. If you're doing a good job, be
- 1:54:16prepared to hear some good stuff and a little bit of bad.
- 1:54:18But walk in prepared. Come out empowered.
- 1:54:21I love that statement. What about you, Connor?
- 1:54:24Yeah, like that. It's pretty cool, huh?
- 1:54:26A. Little bit, yeah.
- 1:54:27You know, that's really it for today's show, you know, do you
- 1:54:36have any questions, Connor, or anything you want to point out?
- 1:54:38No, not really. Do you have any questions?
- 1:54:40I. Was going to ask you, do you
- 1:54:42think what we talked about today prepares you for your
- 1:54:45performance review? Kinda, yeah.
- 1:54:52Well, you remember when you need it.
- 1:54:53Probably not. Probably not, but I don't know.
- 1:54:58I never had a performance review like I remember my manager would
- 1:55:04coming to the office. Like I sometimes ask him about
- 1:55:08like stuff that happened or something.
- 1:55:10Yeah, to get, you know, because he wants communication and
- 1:55:12feedback you. Know, but if it's anything like
- 1:55:14after hours, like when we're closing up and all that, then
- 1:55:17we're just talk there. Yeah.
- 1:55:18And see that's that's. I mean it, I only went to the
- 1:55:21movie theater. Nothing bad really happened.
- 1:55:24Right, you know, but like, there was one day he had a really bad
- 1:55:30day. Which one?
- 1:55:34When you saw that woman walk in. Oh yeah.
- 1:55:39And it reminded him of his mom. And he just told his boss, I
- 1:55:44need to, I need to get out of here.
- 1:55:46Like, I just need to leave. I don't even think you told him
- 1:55:50why that moment until after the fact.
- 1:55:53No, I told him. I was like, I need a break.
- 1:55:55Like I was tearing up almost. I was like, my eyes are glossy
- 1:55:59so they saw it. Yeah, but he didn't be like, no,
- 1:56:01you have to work when you get the, you know, you know what I
- 1:56:03mean? Because they know I'm I'm like
- 1:56:06that and they could do it also. I mean, and how do they?
- 1:56:08Know that because you've been telling them.
- 1:56:09They talk to you and they keep interacting with you, and the
- 1:56:11bosses know what you were good for.
- 1:56:13So when you need a moment, they give you the moment.
- 1:56:15That's what good management does.
- 1:56:17And they think I'm slow because I had so many like customers in
- 1:56:19my life. No, just everybody choose me
- 1:56:21because I'm the fastest. Oh yeah, you know, you, you
- 1:56:24cycle through. So did you ever do numbers to
- 1:56:26see who brought in the most? No.
- 1:56:28Because you could ask that. No.
- 1:56:30No, they'll tell you which register brought the most in.
- 1:56:34Oh well, yeah, sometimes we do that, but it it depends.
- 1:56:38But I'll tell you what. I think I did have the most
- 1:56:41another thing about it, yeah. Yeah, I'm pretty sure you did.
- 1:56:44I wouldn't be surprised if I didn't.
- 1:56:45But then I'll ask you, were you always balanced?
- 1:56:47And the answer is no. I don't know how, dude, I don't
- 1:56:51know how I lose. Like I've been a cashier too.
- 1:56:54It just, it happens and you don't even know what you're
- 1:56:55doing. But are you?
- 1:56:57There's a couple cents here and there, sometimes $10, you know,
- 1:56:59you give a 10 instead of A1, whatever, you know.
- 1:57:01Oh no, never that bad. No, I'm just saying that things
- 1:57:04like that happen. Yeah, I remember one time I was
- 1:57:06like down 20 bucks. I don't know how you.
- 1:57:09Probably gave an extra 20 to someone by mistake, you know?
- 1:57:13I, I don't know. I don't know.
- 1:57:14I know I didn't because, I mean, I'm like careful with my money.
- 1:57:19That's what just shocks me. I was like, damn, yeah.
- 1:57:22But then I would remember later on.
- 1:57:24Oh yeah I did like exact change and I messed up on the how to
- 1:57:26charge them again. Well, I hope you've learned your
- 1:57:32lesson from everything and well, that's it for today I.
- 1:57:35Don't have that job anymore so I learned your lesson.
- 1:57:37No, but you can still learn from experience.
