- 2:00Let me start off by saying thanks to Deal Cooper for filling in for me
- 2:04yesterday. As I think most of you know I have various business things that
- 2:07do outside of this show, and sometimes they take me away from the microphone.
- 2:10Not often, but it does happen, as was the case yesterday,
- 2:15and it will also be the case for me next Thursday as well, and
- 2:19a couple of days during the month of June. Sorry, but it happens.
- 2:23I leave you in the capable hands of Dale Cooper those so thanks to
- 2:25Coop, He'll be hosting for me next Thursday. And I want to talk
- 2:30about this morning show the situation with the Canawa County Commission. As you know,
- 2:34longtime county Commissioner Kin Carper resigned for the position last week, one week
- 2:38ago today to be exact. Of course, you know that the primary was
- 2:43held on Tuesday, with Chris Walters capturing the Republican nomination for commission and Natalie
- 2:47Tenant whin He's a Democratic nomination. Those two will face off in November,
- 2:51but who takes Carper seed until then? I had Deet Curzy from the Secretary
- 2:55of State's office on earlier this week. He was also on Hoppy yesterday talking
- 3:00about it. Of course, nothing will happen until canvassing on Monday and the
- 3:04certification of the election. What do these sitting commissioners think should happen. We'll
- 3:08talk to one of those, Ben Selango later in the show. Plus doctor
- 3:12Casey Sacksbridge Valley will be stopping by. There's an event happening tomorrow in Joplin
- 3:16Park in South Charleston, the benefit of a local animal rescue group called Pig
- 3:21of the Litter. Robert Porter Wagner with the group, who is going to
- 3:23join us to talk about that? The bicycle let's continue to roll through downtown
- 3:28Charleston. I was downtown last night. Man, what an experience. Brian.
- 3:34Those bikes go fast. That's that's my takeaway. The bikes move fast.
- 3:37So we got lots to cover this morning, but let's start with the
- 3:38returning Hannah Gardner the canaw charlest Remain Association with this week's adopt Me please put
- 3:44it the week Handah, Good morning, Welcome to the show. Good morning.
- 3:46How are you I am? I'm not gonna lie. I'm feeling very
- 3:50under the weather, but I'm here right. The show must go on.
- 3:53The show must go on. But we'll get through it, all right.
- 3:55So I haven't had a chance to talk to you since Tuxas and tales a
- 4:00couple of weeks agoing to start with that before we get to the pad of
- 4:01the week. How was the big events? It was very successful. We
- 4:06did have a lot of people show up. We had a puppy race that
- 4:10happened, We had lots of good food, entertainment and it was all around
- 4:15just a good night. And I do believe we had a great outcome for
- 4:17like the fundraising cart of it as well. And that's what it's all about
- 4:21it And I know it was, am I correct? And that it was
- 4:25sold out? Yeah, I believe so. Last I heard it it was
- 4:29about to be, so I'm pretty sure it was. Well. I saw
- 4:31a lot of the pictures. I was unable to attend, but I did
- 4:33see a lot of the picture Look like you guys did a fantastic job,
- 4:38as you always do. With that, let's talk about our doubt me.
- 4:41Please put it the week as always. Picture posted Dave Island Radio on Facebook
- 4:44and The Dave Island Show on x Gucci is our petit of the week.
- 4:48Tell me about Gucci all right? Well, I personally have spent time with
- 4:55him. He hangs out in the back office during the daytime. Sometimes He
- 5:00actually is around about so he was. He had a previous owner to which
- 5:09the owner did have to surrender due to some other issues. But he is
- 5:15around eleven to thirteen years old. We have him listed as thirteen just to
- 5:19be on the higher end of saying so that way in case he is actually
- 5:24thirteen, people know. But the owner did say he was around eleven to
- 5:28thirteen, so he's somewhere around there. But he's very very definitely doesn't act
- 5:33like thirteen. He still has some funk to him. He likes to play.
- 5:38He's definitely you can tell he's old, so you can tell. He
- 5:41definitely likes to lay around. He doesn't like to run too much, but
- 5:46he will play with a ball. He'll play with stretch or something like that.
- 5:49We had him out in the playyard yesterday playing with him, and he
- 5:53absolutely loves play and fetch. He'll bring the ball to you. He doesn't
- 5:59really want you to say kid, but you can take it anyway because he'll
- 6:00he'll want you to start. But he's a really really good boy. He
- 6:06I think, yeah, he is six already. He is a very very
- 6:12good with calmer dogs, so he would be good. I was mentioning to
- 6:15you, he'd be good with a family that maybe has older kids due to
- 6:20him just not really like being restrained or anything. And I know some younger
- 6:24kids like to hug one dogs and stuff like that, so he is kind
- 6:28of iffy about that. But as long as he's got some supervision, I
- 6:33think that it would be okay, as long as you know you're watching them
- 6:36and stuff like that. But he is very, very good, all around
- 6:40good. Other than that, he's very laid back. He kind of just
- 6:43wants to hang out, sit on maybe the couch with you or the porch
- 6:46with it. He definitely likes being outdoors, that's for sure. So he
- 6:48would be a good dog that if you like to go for like car rides
- 6:54or something, he seems like he would be fine with that. Taking him
- 6:57on walks every day. He loves being If you have a yard, like
- 7:00a big Senson yard or something, it seems like he would be great with
- 7:04that because he loves to play. He does pool on the leash a little
- 7:10bit, and he is housebroken, so from what we've seen, he keeps
- 7:15a very very clean kennel and the owner that had him prior to also said
- 7:18that he was housebroken, so it is possible that any dog, even if
- 7:24they are the greatest housebroken dog ever, can have accidents because he's routines are
- 7:29different and dogs usually go based off of routines, so he could possibly have
- 7:34an accident. But he hasn't in the back office either, so he seems
- 7:39very well housebroken. He's a beautiful dog. What am I seeing when I'm
- 7:43looking at that picture? I mean, I seems like maybe a little bit
- 7:46of pit. Is that possible? Yeah, it looks like maybe pitt or
- 7:50some type of like bully breed. He's very true to that though I wouldn't
- 7:58really know what else he's mixed with. But he's very good and I absolutely
- 8:01love teddies and bullieves myself. But he's that up my alley. But Dave
- 8:07Island showing five Aye Lie brought to you apart by fresh Air. They'll change

- 8:26air and you know it. Sometimes handam with these animals. We talk about
- 8:30him every week. Everybody seems to want of a puppy, or they want
- 8:33a kitten, or they want something that they can raise around. But sometimes
- 8:37we've had so many success stories since we've been doing this segment for about what
- 8:39the last year and a half or so, we've had so many success stories
- 8:43with people adopting these older pets and bringing him in their home and finding out
- 8:48that a lot of times with these pets, not to play animal psychologists here,
- 8:52but a lot of them have gone through a lot of stuff. They
- 8:54just want to relax, man, They just want to hang out on the
- 8:56couch, as you said, They want to sleep that. They don't want
- 9:01to cause any problems. They just want fed, They want to be taken
- 9:03out. Sometimes the older ones make very very good pets to be adopted.
- 9:09Yes, I always, always always say that the older ones at the shelter
- 9:11are good candidates to be in a home where somebody's looking for something that sayesn't
- 9:18necessarily have to be a puppy, because our puppies and kittens and cats,
- 9:22they all go rather quickly like they'll be there for no longer than maybe like
- 9:26two weeks or so. But our adult dogs last for a handful of months
- 9:33to under a year. I don't think we've had one that has been quite
- 9:37a year yet, I don't think, but we've had a lot of them
- 9:41that have been there for hot ups to that. So I definitely always recommend
- 9:46coming up and meeting them, even taking them for a doggy day out you
- 9:50could do where you could come pick them up in the morning, spend the
- 9:52whole day with them, see how they do outside of the shelter. Of
- 9:56course, they just have to be appruvesed for that, but most of the
- 9:58dogs can, and it's a good kind of idea to let you know how
- 10:03they might be outside of the shelter because a lot of the dogs that are
- 10:05really hyped in their kennels or really they look like maybe they're aggressive or something
- 10:09like that, they're really not. It's just being in that stressful environment in
- 10:13the shelter is hard on them. A lot of dogs barking all day long.
- 10:18It amps them up and it gets their anxiety high. So getting them
- 10:22out of that is a really really good idea. All right, before we
- 10:26let you go house to search for a new location going, can you tell
- 10:28us where that is? Yeah? I believe we have a new location.
- 10:33I think we had posted about it or mentioned it on the news or something
- 10:39like that, but we did find a piece of land. We are hopefully
- 10:45going to be talking more about that soon, okay, and it'll let you
- 10:48know exactly where. And I know that we've already put the ideas out on
- 10:54what the shelter is going to look like. We presented that at Chextas and
- 10:56Tells as well. We should have that online. R Hanna, I appreciate
- 11:01you and we'll talk again next week. Thanks a lot, awesome, Thank
- 11:03you, Hannah Gardner again from GNAW Charles Humaine Association. This week's Adopt Me
- 11:07Please Better the week. Gucci is the dog's name somewhere between eleven and thirteen
- 11:13years of age. Newter and housebroken, prefers to be around calmer dogs,
- 11:16very laid back older dog. But as Hannah said, on one hand,
- 11:20Guccie seems you can tell Gucci's an older dog, but ain't read. Ain't
- 11:24ready to cash in yet because the dogs still loves to play fetch. Probably
- 11:30would do better with older kids vaccinated and we'll be micro chipped. And again,
- 11:33sometimes the older dogs make the best adopted friends. So go get Gucci
- 11:39and I've got the picture posted if you want to see what Gucci looks like

- 12:20dump and drive offs. Could someone in the media please explain why these stories
- 12:24are not being covered at all? Well, I mean, we get some
- 12:26information out there to the public. I mean, we just had a story
- 12:31here in our own building where the I think it was the sun of one
- 12:35of our salespeople found a kitten yesterday that had been placed in a dumpster at
- 12:41his place of employment. I think it was, and so we were trying
- 12:45to get that story out there among the company and friends and family members try
- 12:48to get that particular kitting adopted. But you're all right? Is it is

- 17:00I really appreciate the text. Thank you. Before we get in talking
- 17:06about Bridge Valley, I want to throw this out there, as our listeners
- 17:08know, you did run for a seat in the Canaw County Board of Education
- 17:11tuesday. You've done a great job when you've been on the show in the
- 17:15last couple of months of separating your job at Bridge Valley from your run at
- 17:18the school board. So before we get to the Bridge Valley stuff, I'll
- 17:22give the opportunity if you'd like to thank those who supported you in that pursuit
- 17:25of the of the board seat. That's so nice. Thank you. I
- 17:27am so honored by the five thousand people who voted for me. I really
- 17:30truly appreciate their support, and I will continue to work for our kids in
- 17:36our schools. I think it's incredibly important that we all really engage to try
- 17:38to make the community stronger. All right, So let's move on to your
- 17:42other job, and that is your job at Bridge Valley. I want to
- 17:45talk about this win program at Bridge Valley it's really been gaining momentum. For
- 17:49those that may have not have heard you on the program in the past,
- 17:52Doctor Sax, what is the WIN program? And I think you're into graduation
- 17:56mode with that now, Is that right? We are? Oh my gosh,
- 17:59it's been so so fun. So the WIN Academy is for students who
- 18:02are in high school. They're in their junior and senior year and they have
- 18:04decided that they're ready to start their careers early. So it's the workforce initiative.
- 18:11So our first group of students all said that they want to be nurses,
- 18:15and so they came into Bridge Valley to work on all classes that go
- 18:19into an RN so that they can graduate with us with an r N degree
- 18:23and start working as a registered nurse here in the community or transfer. We
- 18:27have that three plus one agreement with WVU, so some of our students will
- 18:32actually stick around with us for three years of college and then do one year
- 18:37at WVU. So they're saving almost seventy thousand dollars by making that choice to
- 18:41live at home and go to Bridge Valley and then they'll still graduate with their
- 18:44bachelor's degree from WVU. So it's a huge cost savings for families. It's
- 18:48really an incredible program and everybody's trying to save money right now. Doctor Syche,
- 18:52Gosh, yeah, it's it's just so good for families. So the
- 18:56Win Academy we enroll twenty students last year. We're allowed to enroll one hundred
- 19:02and twenty, so families who hear this and think they're interested, we can
- 19:04take more. It's for students in high school who say that they want to
- 19:10do college now, and so they leave their assigned high school wherever they are
- 19:15by zip code, and they come to Bridge Valley and they are in college
- 19:18classes. We treat them like college students. And our first cohort did all
- 19:23nursing. We're going to also expand into advanced manufacturing technology here in the fall
- 19:29because our employer partners just love this program. And we had our first graduating
- 19:33class just last Friday. So we had eight students who completed for them amounted
- 19:40to a year of college. We've been open for a year, so they
- 19:42transferred in for their senior year and they completed their high school diploma with us.
- 19:48They completed their first year of college, so they all now are sophomores
- 19:51in college. Half of them are staying with us here at Bridge Valley and
- 19:55the other half are transferring somewhere else to go to school, which is both
- 19:57are great outcomes and it's been so fun. Several of them started doing their
- 20:03nursing clinical rotations and have talked about how great it's been to do things like
- 20:08draw blood and go to hospitals and go to nursing homes and they've really gotten
- 20:14some clarity about careers and healthcare and what it is that they want to do,
- 20:18and they're incredible. I'm so proud of these students. Talk with doctor

- 20:48just had graduation for the rest of the college. Is that right? We
- 20:52did. It's such a fun time of year, so many celebrations, dozens
- 20:56of pending ceremonies and leadership banquets and all all kinds of celebrations. But the
- 21:00graduation really is the culmination. And we had three hundred students graduate this year
- 21:07and a really great celebration at the Convention Center Coliseum. It's been they're just
- 21:14they're terrific. Are you being arrested? We're having a fire alarm? So

- 21:36Dave, I'll call you a minute, right, thanks? All right?
- 21:38That may be a new one. Ryan, thirty six years in the business,
- 21:41I don't think I've ever had somebody have a fire alarm that. I
- 21:45mean, you're the master of the promo. I mean, that may be

- 22:56Hobbies, going to talk to Mike Plant about that. You know, we
- 22:57have the race from governor, which is going to be between Patrick Morrissey and
- 23:03Huntington Mayor Steve Williams, but also we had the Senate race as well.
- 23:06Mike Plant's been doing it for a lot, been doing it like for one
- 23:07hundred and eighty years or something. I'm kidding. Plants a friend of mine.
- 23:11He's going to be on the show to talk about that with Hoppy.
- 23:12John Decker will be stopping by to talk about the Trump trial and the chaos
- 23:18in the House of Representatives last night. I mean, I've got the TV
- 23:22uist. We got people Marjorie Taylor Green being one of them, and Representative
- 23:26Crockett I think was her name, on the other one talking about eyelashes.
- 23:30You know, Marjorie Taylor Green saying to the representative, well, I guess,
- 23:36and I'm kind of paraphrase, and I guess it was hard for you
- 23:37to see with your fake eyelashes that actually happens. So Hobby is going to
- 23:44get into that with John Decker cover it up. Also, Brad's on the
- 23:47show today and of course Steam Release. We got steam release covering up on
- 23:52the show with Hoppy as well. I think doctor Sachs is back with us
- 23:56now. Doctor Sachs, welcome back to the show. Thank you so much
- 24:00for that break in my morning. I said, you know, in the
- 24:03inner while we're waiting on you to call back, I said, look,
- 24:06if you need another reason to go to Bridge Valley, if everything we talk
- 24:10about, from the WIN program to all these different programs, if none of
- 24:14that sells you, you have a stellar fire alarm system. Oh that's true.
- 24:19We really do our securities top notch. Parents feel better if you're sending
- 24:23your kids there, or adults if you're going, all right, I want
- 24:26to move. I want to talk about Faster for a moment in every parent
- 24:29or grandparents' nightmare when it comes to financial right, there's been a lot of
- 24:33problems with it. Where are we on the whole faster program. It's a
- 24:37great question. The federal government has finally fixed their form. We're starting to
- 24:41get the data from them that we need for students who have submitted, which
- 24:45is terrific. Actually, Governor Justice did us a huge favor by declaring that
- 24:48state of emergency about FASPA. It's meant that we've been able to start processing
- 24:53at least to our financial aid for continuing students by not requiring the new form.
- 24:57So if you are on promise, if you were using the HEAPS grant,
- 25:02there's several different state grants that people are eligible for that we had we
- 25:07were waiting on, and this has allowed us to not have to keep waiting,
- 25:11So that's great. So really, I think the message that I hope
- 25:15people hear is fill out the FASTPA. It works now, which is terrific,
- 25:19and we're receiving the information and we really want students to come to school
- 25:22in the fall. It's a great way to be able to get the skills
- 25:26that you need to get a job. And we are actually seeing our transfers
- 25:29are way up. One of the things that's happened with all of the FASTPA
- 25:32trouble is that students have said and just really worried about how much college will
- 25:37cost. So I'm going to go to Bridge Valley for a year and then
- 25:38transfer back to somewhere else. And so our transfer numbers are way way up,
- 25:45unheard of numbers. It's like something like seventy percent this morning when I
- 25:49when I looked at it. That people are saying, you know, I'll
- 25:52put a pause on Marshall or WVU for a year and go to Bridge Valley
- 25:56and then make other choices. So that's also a great option. Indeed,
- 26:00it is before we let you go. And you've heard me say this before.
- 26:03One of the things that I really love, doctor Sachs about Bridge Valley
- 26:07is the college's universe, of the college's willingness, I should say, to
- 26:11work with the business community to give them the type of employees with the skill
- 26:15sets that the employees say they need. You've got a program with Blackhawk.
- 26:18The folks with Blackhawk talk about that we do. They have been wonderful supporters
- 26:22of the college. Blackhawk has started something that we call the Blackhawk co Op.
- 26:27They will hire students from our electrical program, the diesel program, the
- 26:30welding program. They need all of those skill sets and they'll pay students right
- 26:36up front like a signing bonus, and then they will give students a job.
- 26:41So you'll work a couple days a week at Blackhawk, you'll come to
- 26:42school at Bridge Valley a couple of days a week, so you have a
- 26:45job in the field that you actually want to be in. And they want
- 26:48to keep the students who go through that program, and they're really hoping you
- 26:52get there and you realize it's a great company to work for and decide that
- 26:56that'll be your career. All right, Well, information on all these things
- 27:00available on your website. It's Bridge Valley dot edu. I appreciate you being
- 27:06here, and I appreciate you being a trooper and adhering to the rules of
- 27:08your college, and that is to go outside when the fire alarm goes off.
- 27:11That's right, you go outside. I mean, was it just a
- 27:15drill? Everything cool? There? Do we need to send the news team
- 27:18there? It's real. I mean, you're welcome to come up and see
- 27:21how well everyone else saw it. Rules. But all right, doctor Casey
- 27:25Sachs, I appreciate it. Thanks a lot. We'll talk soon. Have
- 27:27a great day, Dave, you as well. It's Bridge Valley dot edu.

- 27:52the leader of the Republican Party and we'll be supporting the Republican ticket. So
- 27:56let's just see what happens in November. Texture goes on to say, Shelley
- 28:02is saying, whoa there, Pat. Don't you think for a second you're
- 28:04at the top of the Republican Party in West Virginia just because you are the
- 28:07gubernatorial nominee. Shelley telling everyone she is still in charge. I heard that
- 28:14coming in this morning. I thought that was kind of interesting. Tex said,
- 28:18isn't the Democratic Party going to put Mansion on the ballot to replace Steve
- 28:21Williams. I mean, they would if they actually wanted to win this.
- 28:26And I don't really have time to get into all this right now, but
- 28:30these rumors keep going around. And I was talking with a longtime politico on
- 28:36my drive in this morning, who was hands free, by the way,
- 28:40who was talking about that that there continue to be these rumors floating that Senator
- 28:45Mansion is not done with public life and that I need to mayor Steve Williams
- 28:52could rumors could could possibly remove himself from the ballot. The Democrats put Joe
- 29:00Manchin to run against Patrick Morrison. These rumors were going around big time in
- 29:06the primary, and now that the election is over. The primary election is
- 29:11over, these rumors continue. So I don't know, well see what happens.
- 29:17I do know that the Connaugh County commission has got a vacancy on the
- 29:22ballot and whoever the new commissioner is elected by the people in November, whether
- 29:26it's Chris Walters and Natalie Tennant, there's an opening though before that commissioner would

- 32:01Commiss Benceulango is here. Good morning. How you doing, man, I'm
- 32:06doing well. Last segment with doctor Casey Sachs, we had a fire alarm
- 32:09go off during her interview, so I'm we're hoping that doesn't happen here.
- 32:15Was it on her end or was it here? I didn't hear it.
- 32:16I was in the greenment. Now, we don't have fire alarms here.
- 32:20I'm kiddy, I'm Caddy Insurance people. I'm kiddy, and we have fire
- 32:22alarms here, Charlton Fire Department. He's just joking. I'm kidding, and
- 32:27I'm kidding, Candy Kenny Kidd. All right, So first of all,
- 32:30you and I were talking about this, So before we get into this County
- 32:32Commission thing, let's got a big shout out to our to Doug's scaff you
- 32:37know, and everybody knows the story right now, Secretary state candidate, you
- 32:40know, formal legilator Doug Scaff bitten by snakes. Hopey had the story yesterday.
- 32:45I actually talked to Doug yesterday and it seemed this is a serious situation
- 32:51where all the jokes are being made and whatever. He's one of the ones
- 32:53making the jokes, by the way, but yeah, serious situation. But
- 32:57I'm holding my jokes. I'm holding all the jokes I've been coming since he
- 33:00texted him. He texted me eleven thirty at night. It was was it
- 33:02Tuesday night he was bitten? Or was it Wednesday? Oh, it's Friday,
- 33:07right, so today? Yeah, he texted me Wednesday night. And
- 33:12as soon as he texted me, I started thinking of all the jokes I'm
- 33:14going to say when he's better. It's too early right now, so I'm
- 33:17gonna wait until he's out and doing well. But we're thinking about him and
- 33:22yeh yeah it's bad being bitten once. But man, he got he got
- 33:25up. Yeah, yeah he did well. I mean copper heads, yeah,
- 33:29and that's been boom County copperheads too. Yeah, they're meaner than the
- 33:34county all right. Commission Kent Carper, of course, had his submitted his
- 33:38resignation last week. We won't get into all the controversy and stuff. They're
- 33:42all been well documented. I'm will give you an opportunity to though, to
- 33:44talk about the legacy of Commissioner King Carper. You know, when I when
- 33:47I look back on it, and Kent, Kent spent nearly forty years in
- 33:52public service. I mean, he was an advocate for law enforcement, for
- 33:58public safety, many of the things that we now see and just routine.
- 34:04You know, Kent Kent had worked on for years and decades and had had
- 34:08really done a wonderful job. I've got to tell you, I was when
- 34:14I came on just watching him and learning from him and how he handles like
- 34:21the public safety Levey and and so many different things. It was, Uh,
- 34:25it was eye opening. And this was Kent's you know, Ken's a
- 34:29lawyer, but this was Kent's job. I mean, this was this was
- 34:30something he really loved doing. And so you know, it's it's a it's
- 34:37big shoes to feel phil and you know, Commission President Wheeler and I are
- 34:42going to do our best. Uh, but this last year has been tough.
- 34:45It's been tough, you know, not just on Kent and his family,
- 34:47but it's been tough on the entire commission. The staff in particular and
- 34:52so I understand, you know, his resignation, and it's we just got
- 34:57to move forward. I mean, kennaugh County's got to move forward. That's
- 35:00it. So you know, now the process is we're gonna on the twentieth,
- 35:06which is Monday, we're gonna announce kind of the deadlines to submit applications
- 35:09and resumes and things to fill the spot. And then we're gonna have a
- 35:14special meeting on May thirtieth to fill the spot. And so my concern we're
- 35:20not gonna play I'm not playing politics, We're not playing any of these games.
- 35:23It's all about the stability of the commission. You know, this commission
- 35:27has been under a cloud for about a year and it's time to move forward.
- 35:30You know, we've got to make sure that we bring somebody in that's
- 35:32not going to play games, Somebody that can hit the ground running, that
- 35:36understands what it means to be a commission. A lot of people have no
- 35:38idea what we do, so that that's that's important to me. So we
- 35:45know that we'll have a new commissioner come January of next year. We know
- 35:49that either be Republican Chris Walters or Democrat Natalie ten of those. That's the
- 35:52results of the election Tuesday night. But as we've kind of been talking to
- 35:55tell the team of this thing is someone in the meantime has to feel the
- 36:00the seat held by mister Carpenter now two days ago been on this show.
- 36:04Natalie Tennant stated that she wanted it to be her. Oh yes, absolutely.
- 36:08She said that I use the term others have used like a placeholder.
- 36:13And this happens frequently politics. You get somebody maybe that says, look,
- 36:16I have no interest in this job full time, moving on. I just
- 36:21want to help out the county and I'll come in and I'll just then this
- 36:23happened as you know all the time in politics, and I'll just stick around
- 36:27until the new commissioner, either mister Walter's miss Tenant officially takes takes the role.
- 36:32Where are you on this whole thing? Well, so honestly, I've
- 36:36received dozens of texts that kind of comment. You know, if you need
- 36:39somebody to come in to fill in for whatever it is seven months, they'd
- 36:45be hoonder doing. And there's a lot of great people that I think are
- 36:46going to apply, you know, in Natalie Tennant, who's the Democratic nominee
- 36:51who you know did very well in the election would be a logical choice,
- 36:55but keep in mind the process. So the process is there's only two of
- 36:59us, you know, Lance and me, and we have to agree one
- 37:01Democrat, one Republic, one Democrat, one Republic. We have to agree
- 37:05on who's going to fill that sat. It has to be a Democrat that
- 37:07will take this. It must be a Democrat, and it must be in
- 37:08a Democrat who is not in a currently occupied magisterial district. So I'm in
- 37:14District two and Lance, I believe is District three. So it's got to
- 37:17be somebody from magister of District one or four. And so there are certain
- 37:22qualifications that you have to have in order to be able to apply. And
- 37:25so if Lance and I can't agree, then and the legislature changed this long.
- 37:30I'm not sure when it was, but I think it was fairly recently.
- 37:32Then the Democratic Executive Committee, since that is the party, you know,
- 37:37that's where the vacancy is. They submit three names, and now I'm
- 37:42the senior commissioner. I would strike out a name, and then Lance would
- 37:45strike out a name, and whoever's left is the commissioner. And this is
- 37:50a bizarre process. Man, I'm not gonna I just picture you and Wheeler
- 37:53are just sitting there, like you said, You've got a list and you're
- 37:57going now, no, maybe, No. It's honestly, it's the same
- 38:00process that you use in jury trials. It's called peremptory challenges, and you
- 38:05at the end of a once a jury panel called the veneer is there and
- 38:10you whittle it down to how many ever twelve or fourteen or whatever each side
- 38:15gets to start striking, they do their peremptory challenge. That's exactly what this
- 38:19process is. So it's, as you know, it's as old as the
- 38:22Constitution. What kind of I mean, I know they have to be out
- 38:25of the correct magisterial district, as you said, But other than that,
- 38:29what qualifications do they have to have in order to be a county? Are
- 38:31there? I mean I don't think there are any real qualifications. I think
- 38:37I might be eighteen years of age and just all the normal kind of stuff.
- 38:40Yeah, And you know, for some of that I'm looking at,
- 38:42I want somebody with a level head. I want somebody that is not going
- 38:46to get on and cause you know, issues, particularly within seven months,
- 38:52you know, and I don't want it to be political. I really don't
- 38:54want it about the Kanawh County Commission as it states right now, and not
- 38:59all of the other fifty four to state could say this. You guys may
- 39:02be different parties, you may have different beliefs in certain things, but as
- 39:06a whole, you guys get along pretty darn good compared to compared to what
- 39:09we've seen in some other counties. And you know, when I got on
- 39:12the commission in twenty seventeen, by the way, this was the process that
- 39:15we used. When I was selected in seventeen, I had to run in
- 39:17eighteen and I ran in twenty two. But the the process was the commissioners
- 39:22had to agree. So Hoppy Shores, you know, who was just an
- 39:27absolutely wonderful man, one of the nicest people I've ever met in my life.
- 39:31And he's passed now. But he was a Republican and camp was a
- 39:36Democrat. They had to reach an agreement and they and we had public interviews
- 39:39back then, so everybody had to come in. You know, they asked
- 39:43questions. It was almost like you know, miss Usa Paget. They were
- 39:46asking you a question, you would give the answer, and then at the
- 39:50end Please don't tell me there's a swimsuit competation. No there's not. Oh
- 39:54god, I would have definitely lost, and then you have to then they
- 40:00selected me at the end. So we're in a very similar situation where you've
- 40:04got a Republican and you've got a Democrat and we have to reach an agreement
- 40:07on who we pick, and if not, then it goes to that kind
- 40:12of the parentery challenge section of the law where the Democrat is a community nominates
- 40:16three and then you do strikes. I mean you and Wheeler get along pretty
- 40:20well. Absolutely so. I think a lot of Commission President Wheeler. I
- 40:22mean he has hit the ground running when he came on. He works hard,
- 40:28he works really hard. I mean he's over at the Commission all the
- 40:30time. He's taken calls, you know, all day, all night.
- 40:35So he's done a wonderful job and I think he's got a very bright future
- 40:38ahead. Tex says till Ben. Natalie Tennant should not be appointed since she's
- 40:43running for that office, which could skew the election. It should be a
- 40:45third party. By third party, I think what they mean is somebody that's
- 40:49not part of the process, right, Yeah, And you know, there's
- 40:51a lot of people that think that, and there are a lot of people
- 40:52that think she should be. I mean, it's a democratic spot, it's
- 40:55a democratic opening, and she's the democratic nominee. I mean that's that's logical
- 40:59to me. But ultimately comes down and who can we agree to And I
- 41:04don't want it to be a big, knockdown, drag out fight. That's
- 41:07not what I'm looking for. And I mean this in all sincerity. I
- 41:10want there to be stability. We've been through a lot and I want things
- 41:15to be calm for a while. But Dave Islands showing five any line Bright
- 41:20to you a part by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston Dirty Birds.

- 41:29dirty Birds gear, schedules, promotions and more visit dirty Birds baseball dot
- 41:31com. You're a guy that keeps up with the public, and I would
- 41:35say that your phone has probably been ringing off the hook, not just from
- 41:37people wanting the position, Ben, but people say, well, I think
- 41:42this person would be the best person. That person absolutely, I mean there's
- 41:45a lot of that going on. And I remember, I remember when I
- 41:50was that person that was calling back in twenty seventeen and I went down to
- 41:53Hoppy Shores Insurance Agency and his lovely wife Bronson looked at me and she said,
- 42:00Ben, why do you want this job? She was like, are
- 42:04you crazy? And God, I love Bronson? But and so that's gonna
- 42:09be a question. Why do you want it? Why do you want to
- 42:12fill in? Why do you want to do this? What are some of
- 42:14the questions you're going to ask these people? But what do you want?
- 42:16We're not going to do public interviews. I think that one, you know,
- 42:20but for a variety of reasons. I think we're going to have people
- 42:22submit and then maybe and Lance and I will talk about this on on May
- 42:27twentieth. If they if they want to come and make a comment, that's
- 42:30fine. But I think because I remember when I was selected, I looked
- 42:35around and the people who weren't I felt bad. It was like a public
- 42:40spectacle, right and they were in there and they were getting grilled. I
- 42:44mean, some of the questions are that they asked back in seventeen were hard
- 42:47and they were very pointed. And I don't want to do that to people,
- 42:52and I don't think Commission President Wheeler does either. And I don't want
- 42:55to make a big public spectacle. My goal is to uh to make sure
- 43:00that the Commission is stable, that we're all working together, and that we
- 43:06move forward. And then whoever is elected in November and takes office in January,
- 43:13I'm gonna work with whoever that is. I've known Chris Walters for a
- 43:15long long time. I've known Natalie Tennant for a long long time. So
- 43:20we'll see how that shakes out. Final old text before we let you go
- 43:23is, Dave, I put all my trust in Lance and Ben to do
- 43:25the right thing. We have the best commission in the state. Keep it
- 43:30local. I appreciate that, I really do. And you know, a
- 43:34big part of that was the way that we all got We all get along
- 43:37and commission former Commissioner Carper and Commissioner Shores and Commissioner Hardy, and you go
- 43:45back to Duke Bloom and many before. They're the reason for that. There's
- 43:49a reason why fifty four other county commissions look to us to see what we're
- 43:52doing. Particularly during COVID, you know, we were we were kind of
- 43:55setting the example the City of Charleston, and the A. Kund Of Commission
- 44:00was stting example and people were following what we were doing. And so there's
- 44:02a reason for that because we had decades and decades of experience on the commission
- 44:07and now you know, we've just got to we've got to make sure that
- 44:10we're making smart choices and we're moving forward. All right? To me,
- 44:15I said, I was going to leave with that one, but there's one
- 44:15other question, and then I promise we'll let you go. Give me thirty
- 44:19seconds. In this Texas? Does the commissioner support the removal of the current
- 44:22name of the public Safety building and the renaming of it? Why would we
- 44:25Why would we do that? Commissioner Carper was not charged with anything. Apparently
- 44:30they didn't have enough evidence to charge him or they would have. It went
- 44:32on for a year. Why would we do that? Commissioner Carper, he
- 44:38did a lot for this county and the last year has been tough. But
- 44:43he was never charged with anything. He didn't get a parking ticket. I
- 44:47mean, so you want to strip somebody's name off a building. No,
- 44:51I'm not in favor of that. All right, we'll leave it there.
- 44:53We'll be in touch man. Thanks a lot, Thank you, County Commissioner
- 44:55Ben Selango. It is nine to fifty two back after this. So the

- 47:23animals. There's going to be an event held tomorrow at Joplin Park in South
- 47:27Charleston sponsored by a group called the Pick of the Litter Animal Group. Robert
- 47:30Porter Wagner is with the group, and you're also with the Charles You Main
- 47:34Association too, Is that right? I do maintenance up there. I volunteer
- 47:37up there a lot too. You're also a TV star too, at least
- 47:39you were a couple of years ago. I was. I used to see
- 47:42you with Marilyn mccauliffe or on a regular basis. And Kristin Kinder is with
- 47:45You're the founder of this group, is that right? Kristin? Yes,
- 47:46sir all right, so we'll be get going on tomorrow. Guys, I'll
- 47:50let either one of you kind of jump in here. We have our first
- 47:53ever five K walkings on it as a pet friendly event. It's a medical
- 47:58fundraiser to help us money for a lot of our new medical need babies that
- 48:02we've just recently rescued. I want to talk about this group. Talk about
- 48:06the group. We're a nonprofit foster based five and one C three. We
- 48:10take owner surrenders, We pull strays off of the streets. We help many
- 48:17local shelters here, locally and out of state. We pull from high kill
- 48:22shelters to keep babies from euthanasia. I love the way that you refer to
- 48:27them as babies too. They are babies. Yeah. Yeah. Also people
- 48:31who listen to the show on a regular basis. No, I'm not much
- 48:34for people, but I do like animals. I like it. How long
- 48:37have you been involved in animal kind of stuff, Robert Well? I started
- 48:40working a shelter at twenty fourteen and then kind of retired from there. But
- 48:45that I've been doing all my life and been pretty good with animals. I
- 48:49got a green paw, that's a good way to put it. What is
- 48:52it about animals and that God? Because everybody's involved in something something that they
- 48:55care about. What is about animals for you? Well, for me,
- 48:59it's like you've heard the extent the saying that the more I meet people,
- 49:01the more I like Amazon. That's basically what I just said. Yeah,
- 49:04they give your heart their love unconditionally, and just there's so much abuse and
- 49:10neglect it seemed like going on. So that's what we're all. We actually
- 49:14had a text earlier in the show, and I had Hannah on from the
- 49:15Humane Association. Somebody was talking about the amount of stories that we keep hearing
- 49:20here in the Kanaal Valley about dogs and cats being abandoned in things of that
- 49:23nature, and I just told the story. We had one of our folks
- 49:27here at the station whose son found a kitten a dumpster yesterday. But he's
- 49:32okay, the kitten is okay. They're trying to get it adopted. There
- 49:35are far too many of these stories out here, far too many. Yeah,
- 49:39we've had a couple of dumpster babies ourselves. Last year. We found
- 49:44two one week apart, one female baby about four weeks old a week later,
- 49:49one male baby. They looked identical about a year and a half ago
- 49:52from the little Caesars on Patrick Street plaza and their dumpster. It was pretty
- 49:58safe to say that the same person did it week apart, and they were
- 50:00from the same litter. The vet even agreed, So they're they're in great
- 50:06homes now and that's living the good life. We always, we always hope
- 50:09for a happy ending. Let's talk about this event again to marguing again,
- 50:12time and place and things of that nature, and can can people still get
- 50:15involved that they can't make it tomorrow? Yes? Absolutely. It starts at
- 50:20noon tomorrow. It's going to be noon to three. You can sign up
- 50:22when you get there at Joplin Park in South Charleston. We do have a
- 50:27Facebook page as well, and all info is there for anybody that you know
- 50:31misses it here needs to check into it. And there will be a T
- 50:36shirt giveaways that sign up. At sign up time you will get a walk
- 50:39upon T shirt, your rifle tickets for the big awesome drawings that we're going
- 50:45to have. Don't hear about the draw until we got We've got lots and
- 50:47lots of goodies along the side of the T shirts. We've got some really
- 50:52cool personalized pick of the litter tumblers, thermal water bottles with handles, and
- 51:00some other stuff. So right, entry fees twenty dollars a person. Kids
- 51:04twelve and under are free, and you are invited to bring your pet.
- 51:08Absolutely sure, welcome. We actually had a text about that earlier and I
- 51:14can't seem to find it right now. Somebody wanted to know if there would
- 51:15be pets available there, and so will there be any pets available for adoption
- 51:21there? We are going to have one special baby there that is looking for
- 51:24his forever home. He did come to us as a very very rare and
- 51:28special case. He was born with an autoimmune disease. His name is Kati
- 51:31and he was surrendered to us by his breeder owner at seven weeks old because
- 51:37he was literally on his deathbed. And he is doing well now, has
- 51:43been cleared by the vet, he's fully vetted, and he is looking for
- 51:45his forever home. So he is going to be there with us as well.
- 51:47Okay, the text I was referring to was somebody asking about the South
- 51:51Charleston Armed Forces Day Parade if there would be pets, and that I'm actually
- 51:53going to be in part of that with one of our sister stations. I'll
- 51:57be taking part in that tomorrow, so I don't know the answer to that.
- 52:00Bottom line is there's gonna be a lot of stuff going on in South
