- 0:05Who are you?
- 0:06Welcome to Mystery Mirror, a Jewish guessing game for kids.
- 0:11I'm sorry from that Jewish moment, and in each episode of Mystery Mirror, you will become a mystery person, place, or thing from the Jewish world.
- 0:21I'll give you clues in three rounds.
- 0:24Round one, tricky clues, round two, getting closer, and round three, almost there.
- 0:32Your mission is to guess who or what you are before the big reveal at the end.
- 0:38Are you ready to look in the mystery mirror?
- 0:43Alright detectives, let's begin.
- 0:49Round one, you are a thing.
- 0:52You are connected to a certain time.
- 0:55You're used and then you're put away till the next time.
- 0:59When you are used, people often gather together quietly.
- 1:04You bring a feeling of something ending and something beginning.
- 1:09Do you know what you are yet?
- 1:14Round two.
- 1:17You are used in Jewish homes.
- 1:20Sometimes you're kept in a drawer, or if you are a standing and decorative type, you may be put on display on a shelf.
- 1:30You are held up high.
- 1:32People look at you.
- 1:34Now do you have any idea of what you could be?
- 1:40Round three.
- 1:42Sometimes you are braided or twisted.
- 1:46You are made of wax and wicks.
- 1:51People use you together with sweet smelling spices and a cup of grape juice or wine.
- 1:58Your flame is used to show that Shabbat or Shabbas is ending, but the holiness and the light will carry into the next week.
- 2:10Now do you know what you are?
- 2:12Are you ready for the reveal?
- 2:15Look in the mirror.
- 2:18You are a Havdella candle.
- 2:25Mazl Tove Mystery Solved.
- 2:31Did you know we use a candle to make a formal separation between Shabbat and the weekday?
- 2:38It's also a way to show we hope to begin the week with light instead of with darkness.
- 2:44And the Havdullah candle often has multiple wicks twisted together so that it creates a stronger, brighter flame for the blessing.
- 2:53The light from the candle is strong enough that people can actually see little details on their hands, like the shape of their fingernails and the spaces between their fingers.
- 3:06After the blessing on the candle, many people look at their fingernails in the light.
- 3:11And the idea is that the flame should be bright enough to help you tell the difference between your nails and your skin.
- 3:18And fingernails are also a symbol of blessing because they keep on growing all the time.
- 3:25So looking at them is a nice way to begin the new week.
- 3:28Noticing something always growing on you.
- 3:31And when Havdala is over, many people put out the flame by dipping it into spilled grape juice or wine.
- 3:41Get ready for game time! Let's play Havdella or not Havdella.
- 3:48I'm going to say something that either is connected to Havdella or totally is not.
- 3:55And remember, different Jewish communities have different customs.
- 4:00So some people may do things a little differently.
- 4:03Ready?

- 4:30Many Havdella candles are braided with several wicks twisted together.

- 5:41Many people sing together during or after Havdella.
- 5:45And last but not least, pickles under your pillow.
- 5:51Definitely not Havdella, and that would smell really strange by the morning.
- 6:02Now it's time for your mystery mirror mission.
- 6:05Design your own Havdella candle.
- 6:08What colors would it have?
- 6:09What shape would it be?
- 6:11Write about it or draw a picture and ask a grown-up to send it to mirror at that JewishMoment.com.
- 6:18Thanks for listening.
- 6:20And if you color in the coloring page, please send a picture.
- 6:23I would love to see how yours comes out.
