- 0:02Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever
- 0:05things are honest. Whatsoever things are just
- 0:09whatsoever things are pure. Whatsoever things are lovely.
- 0:13Whatsoever things are of good report.
- 0:16If there be any virtue and if there be any praise, think on
- 0:19these things. Hey listeners, This is Nick from
- 0:22Scripture Central and today's podcast addresses the question.
- 0:26How often do the Articles of Faith track sayings of Paul?
- 0:32On March 1st, 1842, the church newspaper Times and Seasons
- 0:36published a letter that Joseph Smith had written to a Chicago
- 0:39newspaper reporter named John Wentworth.
- 0:41In this letter, Joseph set forth 13 statements of beliefs of the
- 0:45restored Church of Jesus Christ that would later become known as
- 0:48the Articles of Faith. As people all over the world
- 0:51read these Articles of faith today, it is inspiring to notice
- 0:55how much of their wording is founded upon statements taught
- 0:57by the Apostle Paul in the New Testament.
- 1:00Significantly, it would appear that each is a central belief
- 1:04that was held by the ancient Christian Church as well as the
- 1:07modern restored Church. Indeed, as John Welch and John
- 1:11Hall have detailed, the essence of each of the Articles of Faith
- 1:14can be found, often verbatim, in the writings of Paul.
- 1:18For example, Joseph Smith said we believe that men will be
- 1:21punished for their own sins and not for Adam's transgression.
- 1:26In the New Testament, several authors maintain the same view
- 1:28of salvation, each declaring that we would be responsible for
- 1:32our own life choices. For example, as Paul described,
- 1:36Whatsoever a man soweth that shall he also reap.
- 1:40During the first centuries of the Christian Church, the
- 1:43majority of the Greek Fathers, including Origin and Clement of
- 1:46Alexandria, agreed with Paul and believed that death has passed
- 1:50on all mankind because all had sinned.
- 1:54In later centuries this doctrine was lost or marginalized as
- 1:57prominent theologians promulgated the notion that
- 2:00there was an original sin passed on to mankind through the fall
- 2:04of Adam and Eve, largely on the basis of a mistranslation of
- 2:08Romans chapter 5, verse 12 into Latin in the 4th century,
- 2:13Augustine of Hippo would formulate the clearest statement
- 2:16of original sin based on mistranslation, mis, exegesis,
- 2:20ET all. Joseph Smith's statement that we
- 2:23are to be punished for our own sins then serves as a well
- 2:27needed restoration of this important doctrine.
- 2:30Another aspect of the Articles of Faith involves priesthood
- 2:32authority to act in God's name. According to Joseph Smith, we
- 2:36believe that a man must be called of God by prophecy and by
- 2:39the laying on of hands by those who are in authority to preach
- 2:43the gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.
- 2:46Much of this article of faith appears to have been drawn from
- 2:49Paul's first epistle to Timothy, as Paul tells Timothy that his
- 2:53calling was given thee by prophecy with the laying on of
- 2:56the hands of the presbytery. That is, as noted by John W
- 3:00Welch, each element of a proper priesthood ordination is
- 3:03included in the steps described by both Joseph Smith and Paul.
- 3:08This pattern would match the description of the actual
- 3:10ordinations of various individuals throughout the New
- 3:13Testament as well. When seven men were called to
- 3:16assist the 12 apostles, they were told when they had prayed,
- 3:20they laid their hands on them. Similarly, Barnabas and Saul
- 3:24were sent on missions only after the apostles had prayed and laid
- 3:28their hands upon them. Furthermore, the author of the
- 3:31Epistle to the Hebrews makes it clear that no man taketh this
- 3:34honor of the priesthood unto himself, but he that is called
- 3:38of God, as was Aaron, making it clear that only authorized
- 3:42representatives of the Lord could call anyone to a
- 3:45priesthood office. Another worthwhile comparison
- 3:48can be found in the final article of faith, which mentions
- 3:51the Apostle Paul by name. We believe in being honest,
- 3:55true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to
- 4:00all men. Indeed, we may say that we
- 4:02follow the admonition of Paul. We believe all things, we hope
- 4:06all things. We have endured many things and
- 4:09hope to be able to endure all things.
- 4:12If there's anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report, or
- 4:15praiseworthy, we seek after these things.
- 4:19The admonition of Paul mentioned by Joseph Smith is drawn from 2
- 4:23verses of scripture authored by Paul in First Corinthians
- 4:26chapter 13, verse 7. Paul declares that charity, the
- 4:30greatest spiritual gift that Saints should seek, beareth all
- 4:34things, believeth, all things, hopeth all things, endureth all
- 4:38things. According to both Joseph Smith
- 4:41and Paul, Saints filled with this love would then be able to
- 4:45perform these very actions. The last sentence of this
- 4:49article of faith is similarly drawn from Philippians chapter
- 4:524, verse 8, which states that whatsoever things are true,
- 4:57whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just,
- 5:02whatsoever things are pure. Whatsoever things are lovely,
- 5:06whatsoever things are of good report.
- 5:09If there be any virtue and if there be any praise, think on
- 5:13these things. In so doing, we can enjoy the
- 5:17presence and gifts of the God of peace in our daily lives.
- 5:22The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is a
- 5:25restoration of the Church established by Jesus Christ in
- 5:28ancient times. As such, it believes in the same
- 5:33fundamental doctrines as was taught anciently, and the basis
- 5:36of the Church can be found throughout the Bible.
- 5:39These teachings were then identified and condensed by the
- 5:42Prophet Joseph Smith to offer an easily accessible statement of
- 5:46fundamental doctrines of the faith in Jesus Christ still
- 5:49taught today in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day
- 5:52Saints, as summarized by John W Welch.
- 5:55The masterful job which Joseph Smith accomplished by condensing
- 5:59the teachings of Paul into one single page deeply reflects his
- 6:04inspiration and articulate faith in the gospel.
- 6:07Thus we have the articles of faith of the early Apostolic
- 6:10Church restored in the latter day experiences of a modern
- 6:14prophet. Moreover, although we have only
- 6:17considered Articles of Faith 25 and 13 in this brief
- 6:21explanation, all of the other ten articles of faith also find
- 6:26strong counterparts in the various letters of Paul.
- 6:29Latter Day Saints believe in following the whole truth, not
- 6:32just a few favorite or convenient doctrines.
- 6:36Readers are encouraged to study each of the Articles of Faith
- 6:39and their counterparts in the New Testament to see in overview
- 6:43the expansive view of the gospel of Jesus Christ that was shared
- 6:47by the Apostle Paul and the Prophet Joseph Smith.
- 6:51True Christianity desires to receive the fullness of God's
- 6:55infinite and eternal blessings. All that the Father has is
- 6:58promised to the diligent, loving, and loyal followers of
- 7:02Jesus Christ. Joseph Smith sought for the
- 7:05fullness of the gospel, and he included in these 13 basic
- 7:09articles the Word All seven times all mankind may be saved.
- 7:14All that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, allow
- 7:19all men the same privilege, believe all things, hope all
- 7:24things, and endure all things seven times.
- 7:29All is to say, all to the total power.
- 7:34After comparing the Articles of faith with Paul's epistles, it
- 7:37is clear that the congruence between the teachings of Joseph
- 7:40Smith and Paul shows them to be of one mind and one will as
- 7:45apostles of Jesus Christ. These brief statements of faith
- 7:49is found in the New Testament, and the writings of Joseph Smith
- 7:52can then be seen as treasure doctrines for all Christians
- 7:56everywhere, both ancient and modern, both young and old, both
- 8:01male and female, both personal and as a body of believers in
- 8:05the gospel of Jesus Christ. Thank you for listening to this
