Transcript
- 0:00Jon: This week on Xenomania, join us as we travel to the Mississippi Delta to
- 0:06explore the woven world of Ryan Kugler's Sinners Along the way, find out which two
- 0:13of us think Michael B. Jordan is amazing.
- 0:16This is sinners and we are a sinful xenomania.
- 0:39Kearns: Something about a movie with that southern music.
- 0:43I think that's what kicked this one up.
- 0:46I mean, is that what this is?
- 0:47Is it blues?
- 0:48Is it fusion?
- 0:50Jon: It is definitely it.
- 0:52I mean, it turns into fusion, but it starts out as pure blues and like that
- 0:57scene is just incredible the way they meld the blues into every single music form
- 1:05that's sprung from the blues afterwards.
- 1:08And it's every single thing you listened to today was
- 1:12influenced by a blues musician.
- 1:15Ryan: a hundred percent
- 1:16Kearns: That's
- 1:17Jon: even,
- 1:17Kearns: whole
- 1:17Ryan: sure.
- 1:18Jon: even earlier than this, even earlier than 1933, when Sinners takes
- 1:22place, it They blues starts early 19 hundreds, late 18 hundreds, and everything
- 1:30you listen to now is based on that.
- 1:32Kearns: I mean.
- 1:33It kicks the movie up a notch for sure.
- 1:35One of the
- 1:36Jon: Mm.
- 1:37Kearns: what's the name of the kid?
- 1:38Because he's an actual singer, the kid in the movie, right?
- 1:41Jon: The actor is Miles Katten.
- 1:42The Char character is Sammy.
- 1:44Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:44Sammy's got chops.
- 1:47Jon: Yeah.
- 1:48Kearns: that at the Oscars too.
- 1:50Jon: Yeah.
- 1:51Yeah.
- 1:51I, I like, I'm sure that's a recorded performance at the Oscars, but you
- 1:55don't, to see somebody that young with that voice is almost unnerving.
- 2:01Like you don't get that voice at, he's like 21 years old.
- 2:04You don't get that voice at that age.
- 2:06Kearns: Uh, there's people out there who would say it's not his first time
- 2:09around the block, you know, it's, he's been around a few lifetimes.
- 2:12Jon: Yeah.
- 2:12And that, that, that's 20 years of hard living before you have that voice.
- 2:17Kearns: It's possible, by the way.
- 2:19Ryan: it's not only the voice, but it's also how he picks the guitar.
- 2:22'cause
- 2:22Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 2:23Ryan: a pick.
- 2:23He's using his fingers.
- 2:25And if you've ever like picked at a guitar with your fingers, those wires
- 2:28will cut you if you do it correctly.
- 2:31Especially bass wires.
- 2:32So him picking at it in those scenes, especially driving with stacks, what?
- 2:38Kearns: Incorrectly or correctly, you wanna bleed?
- 2:42I
- 2:42Ryan: no, no.
- 2:43Like you don't want, I mean, correctly when you start bleeding,
- 2:46you're doing it correctly,
- 2:48Jon: I mean, kind of.
- 2:49Yeah.
- 2:50Ryan: but it hurts, like, I mean, it's like you're pulling the strings on and
- 2:53he does it I mean, just impressive along with the deep voice as you're saying.
- 3:00Jon: So if you watch the extras on the physical release
- 3:03Kearns: Of sinners.
- 3:04The
- 3:04Jon: of Sinners, the movie that we're discussing, sinners, sinners, sinners,
- 3:08he learned to play guitar for this movie.
- 3:12This was not, yes.
- 3:14This was not something he had before this movie.
- 3:18Ryan: Wow.
- 3:19Kearns: Is that a Rooter?
- 3:20Hold on, pause.
- 3:21The show.
- 3:21Jon: It is a rupi.
- 3:22Ryan: root
- 3:22Kearns: You're having an a and w Rooter right now.
- 3:25Jon: Yep.
- 3:26Kearns: Oh my God, I've never been so envious of anything.
- 3:30Jon: Don't get too Envi.
- 3:31Zero sugar.
- 3:32Ryan: No, those
- 3:33Kearns: Oh, they're so good, dude.
- 3:35Ryan: They're still
- 3:35Jon: Pretty good.
- 3:36Kearns: What's better?
- 3:36What, Ryan, are you gonna compare?
- 3:38Uh, root Beer Brands?
- 3:40Ryan: Root beer or cream soda.
- 3:42Kearns: Root
- 3:42Jon: Root beer.
- 3:44Ryan: Really?
- 3:44Kearns: A
- 3:44Jon: Root beer.
- 3:45Ryan: Alright.
- 3:46All
- 3:46Jon: Yep.
- 3:47Kearns: Stewards or a and w?
- 3:50Ryan: A and w.
- 3:50Jon: I have to say NW because I don't think Stewarts has a zero
- 3:53sugar and I can't do the sugar.
- 3:55Kearns: Oh, right.
- 3:56Ryan: How about
- 3:57Kearns: I,
- 3:58Ryan: Oh, no.
- 3:59Oh,
- 3:59Jon: No
- 3:59Ryan: no,
- 3:59Jon: mug.
- 4:00Mugs not there.
- 4:01Kearns: They're the
- 4:01Jon: Mark isn't there.
- 4:02Kearns: Beer.
- 4:03Ryan: whoa, bark.
- 4:03Barks is good.
- 4:05Kearns: It doesn't have bite.
- 4:06Jon: Barks isn't a and w.
- 4:09Kearns: If you wanna have a real good one, though, it's not root
- 4:11beer, but it's Red Birch beer.
- 4:13You go to, uh, salsa Fresca and get the Red Birch beer.
- 4:16Yeah, that's a,
- 4:17Ryan: good.
- 4:18Kearns: a vibe, man.
- 4:19Jon: Yeah.
- 4:20Now we're talking.
- 4:21Kearns: Your feet start tingling with the, uh, pre-diabetes when you drink it.
- 4:25It's so good.
- 4:26Ryan: the diabetes,
- 4:26diabetes
- 4:29Kearns: All right.
- 4:29I guess back to sinners, I
- 4:30Jon: Back to sinners.
- 4:33But, so not only that, the other real solid musical performance
- 4:36in this is Pearl when she sings right before, she's not a singer.
- 4:42She basically learned to do that during rehearsals for the movie too.
- 4:47Ryan: so
- 4:47Kearns: very impressive.
- 4:49Ryan: everyone's on the fly.
- 4:50I feel.
- 4:51Jon: Yeah.
- 4:51I mean, like, the guy that plays Sammy is an actual r and b
- 4:55singer, so the singing is real.
- 4:59Ryan: Okay.
- 4:59Jon: But beyond that, like he's, they all learned to do this stuff on the fly.
- 5:05Kearns: That is crazy.
- 5:05I'm sure they had a lot of good coaches and stuff
- 5:07Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 5:08Kearns: sat in a garage and just figured this out, but that's
- 5:10still really, really cool.
- 5:12Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 5:13Ryan: On a 90 to a hundred million dollars budget.
- 5:15We're all working on the fly here,
- 5:17Jon: Yeah.
- 5:18I mean.
- 5:18Ryan: 370.1 million, so I mean it worked.
- 5:23Jon: But this is really what Ryan Coogler did like for the authenticity of, a period
- 5:30piece in 1933, deep South Mississippi Delta, for a guy born in New Zealand to
- 5:40come and be able to infuse the history, the American history he puts into this.
- 5:46We, will get into at some point the black movie versus what this really
- 5:52is, which is an American movie.
- 5:54Ryan: Yep.
- 5:56Jon: But for a guy who didn't grow up in this culture, to come here and
- 6:00be able to pull off the historical elements of this is really impressive.
- 6:05He has to have spent a lot of time on that.
- 6:08Kearns: Oh yeah,
- 6:09Jon: And like I, can go into it.
- 6:10I mean, like, you start in the heart of the Great Depression,
- 6:15Ryan: Yep.
- 6:16Jon: you know, so
- 6:17Kearns: time.
- 6:17People enjoyed themselves,
- 6:18Jon: Oh yeah, absolutely.
- 6:19Anytime.
- 6:20Anytime.
- 6:21Kearns: Americans.
- 6:21Jon: Yeah.
- 6:21Yeah.
- 6:22the beginning of sinners we're already four years in a depression.
- 6:26that really in Mississippi had started even before what, you know, the lay
- 6:31people will say the stock market crash started, the Great Depression.
- 6:35Now that's just whatever.
- 6:37But really it's 2, 3, 4 years before that.
- 6:41There's flooding, there's boll weevils, there's, you know, the
- 6:46disparity in economics between.
- 6:50Poor and wealthy landowners.
- 6:52And then the disparity between black and white.
- 6:55by the time this movie starts, cotton is selling for a nickel a pound.
- 7:00Kearns: Wow.
- 7:02Ryan: That's
- 7:02Jon: So you're working out in that field all day
- 7:06Kearns: For a
- 7:07Jon: for a nickel.
- 7:09Kearns: Yeah, that's wild.
- 7:11Ryan: The proportions on receiving money at that time is very, very off,
- 7:16Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 7:16Ryan: also like, I mean, it's where it's located too.
- 7:21Kearns: yeah, in Mississippi.
- 7:22So the thing too, well, I mean, national demand is national demand.
- 7:26So what they're paying for a bag of cotton isn't necessarily what they're
- 7:29making for selling it, they're there.
- 7:33So the, that brings up a good opportunity for us to talk about sort of the
- 7:37reappropriation of slavery, is, you know, not something people love to
- 7:42talk about too much, but once slavery is abolished, then Jim Crow comes,
- 7:46the apprenticeship programs come and it's just slavery with new steps
- 7:51Jon: Yeah.
- 7:52Yeah, I,
- 7:53Kearns: down, like them down the freed.
- 7:57Jon: yeah, because you get into sharecropping, that's, you're just low
- 8:02paid slaves at that point in a. Cycle of poverty, you're never getting out of it.
- 8:09whether it's depression or whether it's what you have to pay to the
- 8:13landowner to continue to be there.
- 8:16You're not.
- 8:17And then to add that to, that you're not, most of the time you're
- 8:21not getting paid in US currency.
- 8:24Kearns: Yeah,
- 8:24Jon: you're getting paid in these plantation scripts or wooden nickels,
- 8:29which becomes a very important plot point too, when smoke and stack realize
- 8:36we're not making money, we're losing money tonight because all these people
- 8:41have to pay with is wooden nickels.
- 8:45Kearns: it's just kinda wild.
- 8:47Jon: And really there, there were two places you could use wooden nickels
- 8:51at in the South at that point in time.
- 8:53You could use them at a black owned business or you could use
- 8:57them at the plantation store.
- 8:59So, you know, you have money, but it's worthless.
- 9:05You have land, but it's not really yours.
- 9:08And then you
- 9:09Kearns: at all.
- 9:10Jon: Yeah, and then you add in, a moment where they drive past the prison work
- 9:15gang, and that, I mean, at that point, that's just straight out slavery.
- 9:21Kearns: yeah.
- 9:21But they throw you in, you're fully
- 9:22Jon: Yeah,
- 9:23Kearns: I mean, we could talk about private prisons like now,
- 9:27Jon: yeah.
- 9:27I mean, exactly.
- 9:28It's,
- 9:28Kearns: that,
- 9:29Jon: yeah.
- 9:29Kearns: too, but
- 9:31Jon: But I mean, at least at this point, there are a few greater
- 9:36protections for people at the time.
- 9:40Sinners is set.
- 9:41They're just, I mean.
- 9:43You looked at somebody wrong.
- 9:44You just, you know, you're arrested for being black
- 9:48Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 9:49Jon: and then,
- 9:50Kearns: like that's not even getting into sundown towns and
- 9:52Jon: yeah.
- 9:53Kearns: too.
- 9:53Like we're just getting into the systemic stuff, not even the horrible
- 9:57beatings and lynchings and whatnot.
- 9:59Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 10:00Kearns: It's, I mean, ain't February, but I feel like
- 10:04Sinners winning made it a Redux
- 10:06Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 10:07Kearns: Month.
- 10:08Just to kind of remember what this was like for them.
- 10:10Jon: Yeah.
- 10:11Yeah.
- 10:11And I mean, Cougar really finds all this stuff and makes it important to the story,
- 10:19and he does, he uses these historical elements to advance what he's doing here.
- 10:25Ryan: Yeah, it definitely highlights his screenwriting ability, especially
- 10:29Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 10:30Ryan: every beat of the story flows nicely with the history that he's presenting.
- 10:34And it's not only like the history of Mississippi, we're also getting into
- 10:37like the culture going on in Chicago.
- 10:39'cause that's where smoke and Stack are coming from.
- 10:42Jon: Yeah.
- 10:42Ryan: I, they join like the opposite mobs, stack with the Italian mop, uh,
- 10:47smoke with the Irish mop, you kind of see their mentality, which is nice.
- 10:51And you're talking about that scene with the money.
- 10:54Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 10:54Ryan: that time, I feel like with prohibition and everything going
- 10:57on, Elliot Nest, the Untouchables, Stack kind of goes with the flow.
- 11:02Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 11:02Ryan: while with the Irish mob, they were a little more, uh, more aggressive
- 11:08is, I would say, would be a good word to
- 11:10Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 11:11Kearns: They were less civilized.
- 11:13Ryan: yes.
- 11:13And smoke.
- 11:14Smoke is like, I don't wanna accept this money.
- 11:17Really?
- 11:17Jon: Yeah.
- 11:18Yeah.
- 11:18stack is the more sort of socially conscious one in that regard.
- 11:24he understands the value of having a juke joint.
- 11:28But if you want to circle back to prohibition, we think a prohibition
- 11:33starting at one time in Mississippi, prohibition started in 1907.
- 11:38Kearns: Whoa.
- 11:39Jon: Yeah.
- 11:40Kearns: not know that
- 11:41Jon: and did not officially end until 1966.
- 11:47Ryan: why so early?
- 11:49Jon: Religion, I mean, religion, Mississippi, but also if you want to
- 11:54get into the racial elements of this, many prohibition advocates believe
- 11:59that selling alcohol to African Americans would increase attacks on
- 12:03white women and reduce productivity.
- 12:07Kearns: Reduced productivity is wild.
- 12:09I mean,
- 12:09Jon: Yep.
- 12:10Kearns: on white women aspect is 'cause they're dumb yokels,
- 12:12Ryan: too.
- 12:12Jon: Yeah.
- 12:13Kearns: it's, any man
- 12:14Jon: Yeah.
- 12:14Kearns: of attacking a woman, but the, reduced productivity is
- 12:18literally like slave owner talk.
- 12:21Jon: Uhhuh.
- 12:22Ryan: Yeah.
- 12:23Jon: meanwhile, while it, even though it's prohibited in
- 12:25Mississippi from 1907, there's a 10% tax on illegal alcohol sales.
- 12:30So the government's still getting their cut
- 12:33Kearns: Yeah.
- 12:33Which hilarious.
- 12:35Jon: and their cut is insane.
- 12:38I found a couple of conversions into modern money.
- 12:43a gallon of moonshine sold for $25.
- 12:46Back then, that would be 325 to $400 today.
- 12:51Ryan: I
- 12:51Kearns: Well, imagine how far you can, you can spread that gallon out
- 12:56Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 12:57Kearns: that
- 12:58Jon: You'd have to,
- 12:59Kearns: earn your
- 13:00Jon: have that, I mean that the, these are the, the beer prices up 700% Brandy, 400%.
- 13:09Kearns: the same thing everybody.
- 13:10The argument was that when they legalized cannabis, it would
- 13:13drive down the prices of drugs
- 13:15Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 13:15Kearns: black market, the drugs are gonna be more expensive, but then
- 13:18they just tax the hell out of 'em and made 'em twice as expensive as
- 13:21they were when they were illegal.
- 13:23Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 13:24Kearns: you know, somebody's robbing you either way.
- 13:26I.
- 13:26Ryan: Oh, the government's definitely cleaning up on that, and you
- 13:29Jon: Oh, absolutely.
- 13:32Ryan: Yeah, I mean like the taxes for that is incredibly high.
- 13:36I mean, maybe it had in connection lowering like the house taxes, but house
- 13:41Kearns: I don't see, uh, my house taxes aren't lower.
- 13:44Jon: No, not nothing got lower.
- 13:46And basically prohibition, created the Capones and the Irish mobs
- 13:50in Chicago and everywhere else, because that was the first vice.
- 13:54That was the vice that they were really peddling at that point.
- 13:57You didn't have the drug sales that you have now.
- 14:00You didn't, you know, prostitution and alcohol.
- 14:04Kearns: Yep.
- 14:04Ryan: I mean, what would say out in the west, you had the
- 14:07opium dent and stuff, but
- 14:09Jon: Yeah,
- 14:09Ryan: wasn't like a go-to go-to.
- 14:12It was
- 14:12Jon: yeah.
- 14:13Ryan: that was more controlled and
- 14:15Jon: Well, yeah.
- 14:16You had the opium dens because of the Asian populations.
- 14:20Ryan: Yeah.
- 14:20Jon: they brought that with them to a place that didn't really want
- 14:24them any more than Mississippi wanted free black people.
- 14:27Kearns: people gloss over what happened to the Chinese in this
- 14:30Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:31Kearns: when they built the
- 14:31Jon: Yep,
- 14:32Kearns: they were murdered.
- 14:33And mass often train
- 14:35Jon: yep.
- 14:35Kearns: actually
- 14:36Jon: Yep.
- 14:36Kearns: scene.
- 14:37Great scene.
- 14:37Another movie, another good movie did, pretty badly at the Oscars.
- 14:41Jon: Which is why you wind up with the chow family in Mississippi.
- 14:45You get what seems like a random Chinese family there, but they came
- 14:51in the post-slavery era because they needed workers, plantation workers.
- 14:56So the Chinese came and found, oh, we don't really like this plantation stuff.
- 15:00Uh, we have enough money.
- 15:02Let's open some stores in town.
- 15:04So there were a lot of Chinese owned businesses in the Mississippi
- 15:08Delta in this time period.
- 15:10Ryan: Which I found interesting that the segregation did not count
- 15:14for them like they were able to.
- 15:16Jon: No, no, because they were just as hated as, blacks were, as anybody
- 15:21else was who wasn't a white person.
- 15:24Kearns: Yeah, the Blue Bloods were the only ones who considered
- 15:26themselves real Americans.
- 15:28They were the slave owners too.
- 15:30If you were in the south, that is, or the north for that
- 15:32Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 15:33Mm-hmm.
- 15:34Kearns: People
- 15:34Jon: mean,
- 15:34Kearns: that.
- 15:35It wasn't
- 15:35Jon: well.
- 15:35Kearns: was a line and everybody was happy with black people being free.
- 15:38Jon: Yeah, well that sort of goes into smoke and stack, and then
- 15:42eventually Sammy going to Chicago.
- 15:45Kearns: Yeah.
- 15:45Jon: That's, the great migration.
- 15:47This is, you know, freed slaves moving north to try to escape Jim Crow
- 15:52and find better paying jobs and get away from the violence in the south.
- 15:57Only to get two cities like Chicago and find, yeah, there's jobs,
- 16:01but they don't like us anymore than they did in the South.
- 16:06Kearns: Yeah.
- 16:07Ryan: Yep.
- 16:07Kearns: then when they go back to the South and Sinners, it's like they're
- 16:10reclaiming their culture, which is a
- 16:11Jon: Yes,
- 16:12Kearns: of the movie.
- 16:12I think they pulled off very well
- 16:15Jon: very well.
- 16:15Yes.
- 16:16Yeah.
- 16:16Kearns: not Bluegrass, I'm sorry, blues.
- 16:19Yeah, blues.
- 16:21Whereas Bluegrass is the white version, the white version of it.
- 16:26But Blues
- 16:27Jon: We get, a really good bluegrass performance in this too.
- 16:30Ryan: You do.
- 16:31Kearns: That's, that is true.
- 16:32We do see some interesting things from the evil vampires
- 16:36Ryan: Remic,
- 16:37Kearns: karmic.
- 16:39we don't have to roll through the plot.
- 16:40If you haven't seen sinners go see it.
- 16:43so the fun really starts to kick off.
- 16:44They don't, shy away from taking the time to develop the story.
- 16:48Jon: not at all.
- 16:49Kearns: And so it's a slow burn.
- 16:50and not in a bad way
- 16:52Jon: This, this, it's about an hour.
- 16:54Kearns: yeah, about one hour before the things start to pop
- 16:57Jon: Yeah.
- 16:57It's not a horror movie until about an hour in.
- 17:01Kearns: Dust till dawn.
- 17:03Ryan: actually I have a question about that.
- 17:04Do you think it's in the vibe of like the silence of the lamps?
- 17:07like people think it's horror.
- 17:09Everyone, you know, we think it's drama.
- 17:11People mix it rewatching sinners for a second time, I felt it was
- 17:16more of a drama, like yeah, you have horror elements, but it's
- 17:19more, I would say, drama thriller with that vampire esque to it.
- 17:24Kearns: It is difficult to rationalize for me with the gore and stuff, silence of
- 17:28the Lambs wasn't a particularly gory film.
- 17:31It did have some gore, the face and things like that.
- 17:34But I think it's easier to make the argument for a movie like Silence
- 17:37of the Lambs not being horror like John does very effectively.
- 17:41Then Sinners.
- 17:42'cause it's just like, we talked about this with From Dust Till
- 17:45Dawn, which I brought up earlier.
- 17:46There's parallels there to the movie switching.
- 17:48There's a switch that's flipped at one point.
- 17:51does become horror later, and in the beginning it's, it is
- 17:54sort of like a period piece.
- 17:56Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 17:57Kearns: A
- 17:58Jon: Yeah.
- 17:58Kearns: Rouge with vibrant colors
- 18:00Jon: Yes.
- 18:00Absolutely.
- 18:01Absolutely.
- 18:02So in bringing up Silence of the Lambs, this seems like a good
- 18:06time to transition to our game
- 18:09Ryan: Oh,
- 18:10Kearns: we'd play games.
- 18:11Jon: I'll tell you what it is, because it, it requires some form of explanation.
- 18:16there are, and I, across the internet they only credit there
- 18:20being eight horror movies that were nominated for Academy Awards ever.
- 18:28It's really, nine because for some reason the lists don't include Frankenstein.
- 18:34And I, you know, I wanted to, to believe that that was a result of, you know, them
- 18:39being published before the nominations this year, but sinners on them.
- 18:43So I'm gonna say there are nine.
- 18:45We're gonna do a slasher stash of the nine movies that are considered to be
- 18:51horror movies that were nominated for.
- 18:54Best picture.
- 18:56Kearns: Okay.
- 18:56Ryan: Okay.
- 18:57Jon: You, you're going to get to Stash four of nine.
- 19:03So four STEs, five slashes.
- 19:07Ryan: wait.
- 19:08Four STEs, five slashes
- 19:10Jon: Yep.
- 19:10Ryan: has a relation to my top five.
- 19:12Funny enough, later tonight.
- 19:14Kearns: And he brings out, get out for number
- 19:16Jon: Get out.
- 19:17I mean it, this is gonna be brutal.
- 19:19I'm telling you right now to bring this down to four is, this is probably
- 19:25the meanest game I've ever pulled.
- 19:27Kearns: Ooh, that's
- 19:28Ryan: you,
- 19:29Kearns: I,
- 19:29Ryan: you have the top nine and you know, doing read on this, I'm gonna slash this.
- 19:36a great film, but you're, you got some stuff in the bag
- 19:40that I don't want to slash
- 19:42Kearns: it is difficult for me to slash this 'cause I'm not a racist.
- 19:47Um, oh, I, uh, no, no jabs being thrown.
- 19:55Jon: That was,
- 19:55Ryan: that
- 19:55Jon: that was the subtlest of jabs right there, sir.
- 19:59Ryan: That was a right hook.
- 20:01Kearns: kidding.
- 20:01It has nothing to do with race.
- 20:03I, enjoyed this movie because of the body Snatcher vibes.
- 20:05I thought that Twist was super duper cool.
- 20:08I'm gonna stash it.
- 20:09I don't know.
- 20:10It came out at the right time too.
- 20:11It was kind of a breath of
- 20:12Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 20:13Kearns: not a huge fan that, of the fact that Jordan Peele
- 20:15sticks to the same script.
- 20:17like M Knight Shaalan did with the Sixth Sense, like this is the first of them.
- 20:21And I mean, this one was really good.
- 20:24So I'm gonna stash it.
- 20:25Jon: Okay.
- 20:26Yeah,
- 20:26Ryan: you think he, 'cause he was nominated for an Oscar.
- 20:29Do you think he deserved to win it?
- 20:31Uh, Daniel Klu?
- 20:34Kearns: no,
- 20:35Jon: I don't remember who was nominated that year.
- 20:37Kearns: yeah, let's
- 20:37Jon: I don't remember who won.
- 20:39Ryan: it was the, uh, 90th, uh, the 90th Academy Awards,
- 20:44which was, oh, get out was 2014.
- 20:49Kearns: Oh God.
- 20:51was up against, oh, Fred Hampton, Judas and the Black Messiah one.
- 20:56No wait.
- 20:58Oh no.
- 20:58He won for Best Supporting Actor in Judas and the Black Messiah.
- 21:01So the Google search did nothing for me.
- 21:04Basically, it just gave me what he won.
- 21:07Hooray.
- 21:102014 Oscars.
- 21:11Was that it?
- 21:13Ryan: Yes.
- 21:1390th, uh, 90th Oscars.
- 21:16Kearns: All right, so who was, but this wasn't an amazing performance.
- 21:19Like he, cried.
- 21:20There was a tear here.
- 21:23Ryan: Let's see.
- 21:25Kearns: Um,
- 21:26Ryan: shocked.
- 21:27That was the year Al Del Toro one too.
- 21:29Kearns: Gary Oldman won for Darkest Hour this year.
- 21:31No shot bro.
- 21:34Jon: It is.
- 21:35Okay,
- 21:35Ryan: Uh, okay.
- 21:36Kearns: No shot.
- 21:38Yeah.
- 21:38And Denzel Washington was up too.
- 21:40Not a chance bro.
- 21:43Jon: this,
- 21:43Ryan: up.
- 21:44Jon: that now
- 21:45Kearns: Daniel Day Lewis, Gary Oldman and Denzel Washington.
- 21:49This kid never had a shot.
- 21:51Jon: that's a rough year to be nominated.
- 21:53Kearns: Yeah, bro.
- 21:54Daniel Day Lewis being in the same like hearing your name and his name
- 21:58in the same sentence must feel so
- 22:00Jon: That's a, that's a tough one.
- 22:04Kearns: Yep.
- 22:04So, but even still, like, I don't think that his performance
- 22:08was, best actor worthy.
- 22:09I think it was a great movie and he did a good job.
- 22:12I mean, Gary Oldman won it for playing Winston Churchill.
- 22:17Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 22:17Ryan: fair.
- 22:19Jon: And like that's kind of like right into the academy, like, oh, historical
- 22:24performance or this guy in a horror movie.
- 22:27Kearns: Yep, exactly.
- 22:29Ryan: Well, he kicked ass still
- 22:30Jon: Oh.
- 22:31I mean, it's, it's a great performance.
- 22:33Kearns: Then why don't you stash the film?
- 22:35Jon: Yeah.
- 22:36Ryan: because
- 22:36Kearns: Yeah,
- 22:36Ryan: know, I know.
- 22:37There's more coming.
- 22:38Kearns: know.
- 22:38So it's listeners, Ryan doesn't have tiki torches in his garage.
- 22:43What the problem is, is that he knows John's evil and that I'm probably
- 22:46gonna regret stashing get out.
- 22:48But
- 22:48Jon: I mean, at some point, I think you're both gonna run into a problem.
- 22:52Movie number two.
- 22:55Kearns: the make out movie.
- 22:58Ryan: I've only seen the one scene with their transformation,
- 23:00so I'm gonna slash it.
- 23:01Kearns: I can't tell the story about Black Swan that I wanna tell because
- 23:04it involves people that we can't mention on the podcast unfortunately.
- 23:09But suffice to say, this movie has had a very drastic impact on our
- 23:13lives and involves like a detective story and trying to figure out
- 23:17who done it in all sorts of stuff.
- 23:18And I'm not even talking about the film, I'm just talking about what
- 23:21we have to do to deal with a YouTube clip of this film wherein Natalie
- 23:26Portman makes out with Mila Kunis.
- 23:28Ryan: Yep.
- 23:30Yep.
- 23:31Kearns: Oh Lord, black Swan.
- 23:33I'm, slashing it just for that actually hours of my life gone
- 23:38because of this damn movie.
- 23:40Ryan: Didn't even watch the full thing.
- 23:43Kearns: I like this movie.
- 23:44It was, good and it was unique.
- 23:47Also a nice twist,
- 23:50Jon: Yeah, it's, a fine movie.
- 23:52I don't consider it to be a horror movie, but it's a fine movie.
- 23:54Kearns: I don't think it's a horror movie either.
- 23:56Jon: Alright.
- 23:57Ryan: it?
- 23:58Jon: Yeah.
- 23:58I mean, that's why it's here.
- 23:59Kearns: It's a
- 24:00Jon: This is on, it's on every list of horror movies
- 24:03nominated for Academy Awards.
- 24:05Ryan: I don't agree with that.
- 24:06Jon: I don't either, but here it is.
- 24:09movie number three.
- 24:11Ryan: Ooh,
- 24:11Kearns: Stash,
- 24:12Ryan: Stash.
- 24:14Jon: I knew,
- 24:15Kearns: it twice.
- 24:16Jon: I knew that one was gonna get the double St.
- 24:19Ryan: It's
- 24:19Kearns: mean it still holds up.
- 24:21I've watched it four times now.
- 24:23Ryan: Are you
- 24:23Kearns: Four.
- 24:23It's so good.
- 24:25Ryan: is the Criterion collect the collection?
- 24:27Uh, edition's gonna have a longer cut.
- 24:30Are you that up?
- 24:31Kearns: I might have to, that might be my first criterion too,
- 24:35Ryan: Oh,
- 24:36Kearns: my first physical copy of anything other than a video
- 24:38game in probably 25, 30 years,
- 24:41Ryan: While you're doing it right for Mr.
- 24:43Kearns: actually no 20 years.
- 24:44I have a whole like little Rolodex thing downstairs with 250 DVDs in it.
- 24:50Not like John John's a purist.
- 24:52He keeps them in the case and all that.
- 24:53Jon: Absolutely.
- 24:55Ryan: Yeah.
- 24:55Jon: The cases are art themselves.
- 24:57Kearns: I still have Con Air.
- 24:59Jon: I can, I can't wait to show you guys the version of Poltergeist I just bought.
- 25:03Kearns: Oh, sick
- 25:05Ryan: ready.
- 25:06Jon: It's not in yet, but
- 25:07Ryan: Oh,
- 25:08Jon: when it comes in, oh my God.
- 25:11Ryan: I can only imagine.
- 25:13Jon: looks amazing.
- 25:13All right.
- 25:14Movie number four.
- 25:15Kearns: Frankenstein.
- 25:16Oh, I gotta stash it, dude.
- 25:19How do you cut jaws?
- 25:21We can stash four.
- 25:22This'll be my third year.
- 25:23Second,
- 25:24Ryan: Four.
- 25:25Kearns: uh,
- 25:26Ryan: And
- 25:26Kearns: you, I, and I do, I would consider Jaws a horror movie as well.
- 25:32If not just for like, fact that it's impossible to watch it.
- 25:36Politicians like feeding people to the Meek.
- 25:38Grindr,
- 25:39Ryan: Uh, yeah, I'll stash it.
- 25:42Kearns: I have to stash at its jaws.
- 25:44Ryan: Jaws.
- 25:45Kearns: I'm angry.
- 25:46Did this didn't win, did it?
- 25:48Jon: Nope.
- 25:49Ryan: No.
- 25:49Jon: No, no.
- 25:52True horror movie has won
- 25:55Ryan: Well, I, for best picture or just like
- 25:57Jon: for Best Picture.
- 25:59Kearns: of water better not be on here.
- 26:00Jon: It's not.
- 26:01And Shape of Water.
- 26:02Shape of water doesn't count as, nobody puts that in SR.
- 26:06Ryan: do
- 26:06Kearns: Good.
- 26:07Ryan: P Lamper?
- 26:09Jon: They do not.
- 26:10Ryan: no.
- 26:10Kearns: was gonna
- 26:11Jon: I mean, they might.
- 26:11They might, but I don't think it it.
- 26:13Yeah.
- 26:14Next,
- 26:16Ryan: Oh,
- 26:16Jon: prev on a previous edition of Xenomania.
- 26:20Ryan: this is what started our year and I'm gonna slash it
- 26:22Kearns: I'm gonna slash it too.
- 26:24I'm gonna have to slash it.
- 26:25Um,
- 26:26Jon: mean, it's fine.
- 26:27Uh, this was, I feel like this was, uh, nominated for the phenomena
- 26:32Kearns: yeah.
- 26:32Jon: it was such a cultural touchstone,
- 26:36Ryan: Oh, absolutely.
- 26:38Jon: I mean, it's not, it, it's not a best picture when you watch it.
- 26:41You kind of know what, you kind of watch a movie like that and you know whether it
- 26:46really deserves the best picture or not.
- 26:50I didn't feel like this did.
- 26:51Ryan: now they have, um, original screenplay and adapted screenplay,
- 26:56the separate categories.
- 26:58I think in 99 it was still one category, but if that was in original screenplay,
- 27:03I believe it could have won that.
- 27:05Jon: It could have.
- 27:06Yeah.
- 27:07Yeah.
- 27:07Ryan: you know, I mean, being against, I don't know what was up that year, but
- 27:11being against other scripts adapted and original, I mean, it didn't have a chance.
- 27:17Jon: No, and I mean, listen, I, thought it was a fine movie.
- 27:20I don't think it's the best picture.
- 27:21Kearns: It's a one trick pony though.
- 27:23Yeah, exactly.
- 27:24Like it.
- 27:24It's, it's a good one off.
- 27:26And then after that it's used up almost completely.
- 27:29Jon: Yep,
- 27:30Kearns: watched it again many years later.
- 27:32I enjoyed it, but I was like, all right.
- 27:34I
- 27:34Jon: yep,
- 27:35Kearns: everybody was freaking out so hard.
- 27:37Jon: yep.
- 27:37Ryan: watch.
- 27:38It's a good
- 27:39Jon: It, it's fun.
- 27:40It's fine.
- 27:40It's, yeah.
- 27:41Next,
- 27:44previously on Xenomania.
- 27:46Kearns: I do like the substance, but I don't think I'm going to have
- 27:49an easier time slashing this than some of the other ones for sure.
- 27:53Ryan: Yeah.
- 27:53I'm gonna slash it
- 27:54Kearns: Because like I said, I don't identify, with the plight
- 27:57Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 27:59Kearns: as well.
- 27:59It's, I think that this is a movie for Hollywood people who are getting
- 28:03Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 28:03Kearns: and it's so hard.
- 28:06Ryan: It's excellent though, how they
- 28:07Kearns: It is excellent.
- 28:08It
- 28:08Jon: I've.
- 28:09Kearns: movie.
- 28:10Jon: I have to say I really love this artwork for it, like with that,
- 28:13Ryan: this is pretty
- 28:14Jon: not the version of her lying on the bathroom floor,
- 28:17but this version I like a lot.
- 28:20Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 28:21Ryan: It's
- 28:21Jon: All right?
- 28:22Mm-hmm.
- 28:25Next,
- 28:28Ryan: Ooh,
- 28:28Kearns: Stash.
- 28:30Damn it, John.
- 28:31'cause I know his next one.
- 28:33How do you slash The Exorcist?
- 28:36this is where I regret keeping get out by the way, but
- 28:39Jon: I mean, you, you are gonna regret keeping something because
- 28:43this is an amazing list of movies.
- 28:45Ryan: here's, here's my question.
- 28:47'cause like I said, I, it's related to my top
- 28:50Kearns: This one couldn't win.
- 28:51Ryan: are you evil?
- 28:52And do you have
- 28:52Kearns: I,
- 28:53Ryan: baby on here?
- 28:54Because after watching that, I actually prefer
- 28:57Kearns: I would pick,
- 28:58Ryan: Rosemary's Baby over the Exorcist.
- 29:00Jon: Was it nominated for best picture?
- 29:02Kearns: Rosemary's baby.
- 29:03Ryan: baby.
- 29:04Jon: It was not.
- 29:05Ryan: no.
- 29:06It was be no.
- 29:07Jon: These are only
- 29:08Ryan: doing
- 29:08Jon: best picture nominees.
- 29:10Only best picture.
- 29:12Ryan: You know what, then I'm, I don't want zuzu visiting me
- 29:14tonight, so I'm gonna stash it.
- 29:16Kearns: Yeah, I gotta st this, but
- 29:18Jon: So
- 29:18Kearns: still have one left.
- 29:20Jon: yeah, Ryan gets to Stash one.
- 29:22Kerns, you're cutting this?
- 29:25Kearns: All right.
- 29:26It's fine.
- 29:27Ryan: Wait, hold on.
- 29:28Oh, this is like a first time where the movie we're covering.
- 29:31Jon: Yep,
- 29:32Ryan: in the top
- 29:32Kearns: I think
- 29:33Jon: yep.
- 29:34Kearns: get Out actually beats sinners as far as being a better film,
- 29:37Ryan: sacrilege.
- 29:38Jon: absolutely do not.
- 29:39Ryan: no,
- 29:40Kearns: I think it does, I think it does.
- 29:42Ryan: Sinners is definitely the
- 29:44Kearns: one's more vibrant stuff, but the messaging, what
- 29:49is the messaging in sinners?
- 29:50Ryan: but sinners is more of the melting pot.
- 29:52I feel like you get the mix of like you're centered on one culture, but you so see
- 29:57that it's a mix of other cultures into one
- 30:00Kearns: Yeah, it's very interpretive.
- 30:01Whereas with Get Out, it's about, yeah, well, it's about assimilation, which is
- 30:06a way, it's a huge problem with Black America with regard to, do you behave
- 30:12as though you are black or do you behave as though you are white and be accepted?
- 30:15And that's always been a massive thing.
- 30:17there's, Thoreau talked about this for Christ's sake, so I don't know.
- 30:21I'm, I'm, I'm good with get out.
- 30:24I appreciate you guys liking sinners better though.
- 30:28Jon: Ryan,
- 30:28Ryan: bet
- 30:29Jon: you stashing sin
- 30:31Ryan: yeah, I'm gonna stash it.
- 30:31'cause you probably have silence in the Lambs is the last one.
- 30:34And I'm like, I I'll slash that.
- 30:36I'm okay.
- 30:37Jon: and.
- 30:38Ryan: over that.
- 30:39Jon: You would be correct.
- 30:41Kearns: B. Jordan.
- 30:42Jon: You would be correct.
- 30:43You don't like Michael B. Jordan?
- 30:45Kearns: I never liked Michael B. Jordan.
- 30:47Jon: I mean, he's not, he's not my, he's not my favorite.
- 30:50Michael Jordan, but he's a good second.
- 30:52Michael Jordan.
- 30:54Kearns: No, I just think he's a terrible actor.
- 30:56Ryan: Real.
- 30:57Kearns: Yes, he was Bad and Creed, all of them.
- 31:02The first one's passable because it was a well-written movie, but all of
- 31:04the follow ups are supposed to rely on him to carry it, and they don't.
- 31:08Ryan: Black Panther,
- 31:09Kearns: He doesn't.
- 31:10Terrible.
- 31:10He did a terrible job.
- 31:13He's the most unauthentic actor I think I've ever seen.
- 31:15That's super hyped up.
- 31:17I feel like I could watch Tom Holland recite Shakespeare over Michael B. Jordan
- 31:22playing an action hero and be believable.
- 31:24Ryan: I mean, I can,
- 31:25Kearns: It's so hard for me.
- 31:27Well, guy Montag, he ruins Guy Montag in the Fahrenheit 4 51 movie.
- 31:31He's terrible.
- 31:32Ryan: whole
- 31:33Kearns: That's a script issue too.
- 31:34Ryan: off that.
- 31:35Yeah.
- 31:35That whole movie is ruined.
- 31:36They don't, if they follow the, what the book is, we'd be fine,
- 31:40Kearns: But if you watch his o, his Oscar acceptance speech and then watch him
- 31:44act in that movie, it's the same person.
- 31:48There's no acting going
- 31:50Jon: Well
- 31:50Kearns: my point with him.
- 31:51Ryan: Well,
- 31:52Jon: let, let me transition back to the Oscars 'cause that's one of the
- 31:58other points I wanted to bring up tonight Sinners falls into multiple
- 32:02disrespected categories at the Academy Awards we just went through, we
- 32:08just went through nine horror movies that were nominated for best Picture
- 32:12Ryan: Yeah.
- 32:13Jon: only nine.
- 32:14None of them won.
- 32:16There have only been.
- 32:19Now with Michael B. Jordan.
- 32:21Eight performances in horror movies to Win Academy Awards not be nominated.
- 32:27There's a few more, but to Win and it's two of 'em are this year.
- 32:31Amy Madigan and Michael B. Jordan.
- 32:34This year you have Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Kathy Bates, Jody Foster,
- 32:40Kearns: A lot of whites.
- 32:42Jon: Ruth Gordon, and Rosemary's Baby, and Frederick March in Dr.
- 32:46Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
- 32:47That's it.
- 32:49Ryan: the Frederick March one.
- 32:51Okay.
- 32:52Jon: That's it.
- 32:53That's that.
- 32:53Those are the only performances that have won an Academy Award for horror movie.
- 32:58Kearns: Wow.
- 32:59Ryan: Spencer Tracy in that one.
- 33:01Jon: He might be,
- 33:02Kearns: Stinks too.
- 33:03Delroy.
- 33:03Lindo got.
- 33:05robbed and if, if
- 33:07Jon: I.
- 33:08Kearns: the recast of the Oscars, you can see when Michael b Jordan's about to
- 33:13win, they cut to Delroy and he's leaning there with the biggest scowl on his face.
- 33:19I think he agrees with me about Michael b Jordan's acting.
- 33:22Jon: I think that scowl was because he fully expected that,
- 33:25Timothy Chalamet was gonna win.
- 33:28Kearns: Yeah.
- 33:29Jon: I think he had seen how the night was going.
- 33:31He was like, no, we, we aren't gonna win this one either.
- 33:34Kearns: Yeah.
- 33:35Jon: And which goes to another traditional Oscar snub, is the
- 33:41African American performance.
- 33:44Kearns: Yeah.
- 33:44Ryan: Yeah.
- 33:45Jon: 90 plus, years, 23 African Americans have won acting awards,
- 33:52only seven for lead performances.
- 33:57Kearns: How many have been leads though?
- 33:59Ryan: Dental, Washington Training Day.
- 34:01Halle Berry.
- 34:02What was the Halle Berry?
- 34:03One
- 34:03Kearns: I, we can rattle off a bunch of movies, but like ratio wise, and we, I
- 34:07know there has to be a cutoff because
- 34:09Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 34:09Kearns: when there were no black leads,
- 34:11Jon: Yeah.
- 34:12Kearns: like we should probably try to figure that out at some point.
- 34:14How?
- 34:15Like what's the ratio?
- 34:16'cause it isn't 50%.
- 34:1750%. I know
- 34:18Jon: No, no, but I mean, how many great roles did Denzel have?
- 34:24Kearns: A bunch.
- 34:25He should have won for, John Q.
- 34:27Jon: He's, he's won one
- 34:29Kearns: Yeah.
- 34:30How
- 34:30Jon: more,
- 34:31Kearns: won?
- 34:31Jon: three-ish?
- 34:32Kearns: Tom Hanks has three
- 34:34Jon: I think it's three.
- 34:35Ryan: Three.
- 34:36Jon: it's three.
- 34:36Kearns: my argument.
- 34:37I thought he had won.
- 34:39Ryan: Lee.
- 34:39Jon: many did, how many?
- 34:40How many does, how many does Morgan Freeman have
- 34:43Kearns: Zero.
- 34:45But what, what he should he have earned?
- 34:46Uh,
- 34:48Jon: driving Miss Daisy?
- 34:50Ryan: yeah.
- 34:50Kearns: driving Miss Daisy is the answer.
- 34:52Actually.
- 34:52Unforgiven would be best supporting and then driving.
- 34:55Miss Daisy would be best actor, I'm guessing,
- 34:58Ryan: Yeah.
- 34:59Kearns: because
- 34:59Jon: Yeah.
- 34:59Kearns: the best actor though, in that, I don't know.
- 35:02Ryan: actress.
- 35:03actress.
- 35:05can also go back to Sidney Poer.
- 35:07Jon: One time, one award.
- 35:09Ryan: he in the
- 35:10Jon: Once.
- 35:11Yep.
- 35:12Ryan: me Mr.
- 35:13Kearns: I don't know.
- 35:13It's difficult for me
- 35:14Jon: Forrest Whitaker.
- 35:15Once
- 35:16Kearns: Yeah.
- 35:16Forrest
- 35:17Jon: Will
- 35:17Kearns: one.
- 35:18Jon: Smith and Jamie Fox are the only ones we didn't mention.
- 35:21In this.
- 35:22Halle Berry is the only black woman
- 35:25Ryan: Which shock?
- 35:28I
- 35:28Jon: for Lead.
- 35:29For Lead I
- 35:30Kearns: How many black women have been a lead in a, in a big budget movie?
- 35:34That would get the Oscars though.
- 35:36Ryan: Color, purple.
- 35:37Jon: Hidden Figures.
- 35:39Ryan: Yep.
- 35:39Kearns: Hidden Figures is an interesting one.
- 35:41Were they nominated?
- 35:43Jon: I think.
- 35:43Uh,
- 35:43Kearns: must.
- 35:44She
- 35:44Jon: d Viola Davis has been nominated for sure.
- 35:47Kearns: She must have been
- 35:48Jon: Um
- 35:49Kearns: Hidden Figures had a big year.
- 35:51I think for the help too.
- 35:53Ryan: Yep.
- 35:53The help
- 35:54Jon: mm-hmm.
- 35:54Ryan: big
- 35:54Kearns: I,
- 35:55Ryan: Spencer.
- 35:56Jon: I mean, really, Ja.
- 35:57Ryan: shoot.
- 35:57Kearns: memory.
- 35:58There's a few,
- 35:59Jon: Jamie Fox has one because he had to go and be the biopic, you know?
- 36:03Kearns: sitting, I'm not defending it.
- 36:04I'm just saying that there's data out there we haven't seen yet, and
- 36:08I don't know, if this correlates, it feels like snubs, I mean,
- 36:14Ryan: We gotta look at the data.
- 36:16Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 36:16Kearns: also consider the fact that the Academy votes semi
- 36:20anonymously, like they vote.
- 36:22I guess they could call each other and be like, you voting for the help?
- 36:25Nah,
- 36:26Ryan: that probably does happen.
- 36:28Come
- 36:28Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 36:29Kearns: I dunno.
- 36:30Ryan: it's all about the control in Hollywood and the
- 36:33Kearns: Well.
- 36:33Ryan: stands out
- 36:34Kearns: they have to
- 36:34Jon: I mean,
- 36:35Kearns: the
- 36:35Jon: yeah, up until this year, it wasn't mandatory that you watched
- 36:38the movies you were voting on, so,
- 36:40Ryan: crazy.
- 36:41I
- 36:42Jon: you know,
- 36:42Ryan: on a lot of these films.
- 36:44I want
- 36:45Jon: I mean,
- 36:46Ryan: back and
- 36:47Jon: did we wind up, did we really wind up with better results
- 36:50with them watching everything?
- 36:52Ryan: I mean, what, what was the excuse for
- 36:54Kearns: It was almost,
- 36:54Ryan: They had
- 36:55Kearns: it was incredibly predictable
- 36:56Ryan: I
- 36:57Kearns: this year.
- 36:58Very predictable.
- 36:59I don't think there were many surprises.
- 37:01Ryan: did you expect one battle after another to win?
- 37:04Because I thought it was
- 37:05Kearns: Yeah.
- 37:05Ryan: between that and sinners and I feel sinners
- 37:08Jon: Sinners, had some sinners, had the momentum.
- 37:12But I, I thought all along that one battle was gonna win because it
- 37:15had, yeah, it has the timely sort of pol politicized element to it.
- 37:22Ryan: plus the star power.
- 37:23I mean, I get it, but sinners is what, what It's what you expect a movie to
- 37:27be that as a, a film lover like the.
- 37:31mean, one battle enough after another's great.
- 37:33But you had a lot of those pops.
- 37:35The action, the thrill, sinners, it cinematography as a whole.
- 37:39The
- 37:40Jon: And I,
- 37:41Ryan: I, I mean, just everything.
- 37:42Jon: even in one battle after another, though, they ignored, largely
- 37:46ignored the minority performances.
- 37:49Ryan: Yeah, they did.
- 37:50Jon: Benicio Del Toro got nominated.
- 37:52But did you ever think he had a chance to win?
- 37:55Kearns: No.
- 37:55Jon: I, I,
- 37:56Kearns: a clown.
- 37:57Jon: but I,
- 37:58Kearns: role was
- 37:59Jon: I, I think, I think his clown role was better than Sean Penn's role.
- 38:05'cause Sean Penn, Shawn, Sean Penn, Sean Penn played that
- 38:09role pretty close to perfectly.
- 38:12It's just so what, you know, it's not like, it's not a
- 38:16particularly challenging role.
- 38:18He's just a tough military guy.
- 38:22Yeah.
- 38:22He's a tough cuck military guy.
- 38:24Like, you've seen those guys in almost every military movie ever made.
- 38:30Like, it's so,
- 38:32Kearns: Yeah.
- 38:32Jon: it's,
- 38:33Kearns: that's like the guy that kills Kevin Spacey.
- 38:35Jon: but you know, all, all the, the women in that didn't,
- 38:40Ryan: joking.
- 38:40Jon: didn't win.
- 38:42Ryan: No, no.
- 38:43And they, their performances, I'm skipping on the name.
- 38:46Their performances were very excellent.
- 38:48Um,
- 38:49Jon: Um, one was Regina Hall and one was, um, somebody with a t.
- 38:54Kearns: even know
- 38:54Jon: Um,
- 38:55Kearns: either.
- 38:56Jon: um, I know, yeah.
- 38:57I've never seen her in anything.
- 38:59It's, it's with Ts.
- 39:00Kearns: it's to twist things.
- 39:01Ryan?
- 39:02Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 39:03But, but here's the, here to go to bring it back to sinners.
- 39:07I think the only reason Delroy, Lindo doesn't win, he needed one more scene.
- 39:12Probably he needed one more big time, like chewing the scenery
- 39:16moment and watching it a second time.
- 39:21I loved his performance.
- 39:23I think it needed like one moment and I would sort of go the same way
- 39:27with Annie or, um, played by Wmi.
- 39:30Masaki.
- 39:30'cause she probably should have been nominated too.
- 39:33She's just missing probably a moment as well.
- 39:37Ryan: Yeah.
- 39:38Kearns: Delroy should have won for God in 60 seconds.
- 39:41Jon: Roy Lindo probably should have a couple at this point, because he was
- 39:44amazing in, Clockers, if I remember right.
- 39:46It's Clockers.
- 39:47Ryan: he was.
- 39:47Kearns: he's great in a few movies.
- 39:49Um, as far as being a, second guy, third
- 39:52Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 39:53Kearns: crushes it.
- 39:53He's great ensemble cast too.
- 39:55Jon: Yep.
- 39:56Ryan: Okay.
- 39:56Yes.
- 39:56Jon: Yeah, because he,
- 39:58Kearns: a statue
- 39:59Jon: no, he's not.
- 40:00Ryan: Yeah.
- 40:00Jon: not.
- 40:01Kearns: you didn't get it for this.
- 40:02That's probably it.
- 40:03Jon: And, listen, and I'm, not gonna pretend there aren't white
- 40:06actors who have been snubbed.
- 40:08Harrison Ford has no Academy Awards.
- 40:11He's been in, he's been in eight movies that have been
- 40:14nominated for, for Academy Awards.
- 40:16He's not
- 40:17Kearns: what, what movie was he in?
- 40:19That he played like The Fugitive?
- 40:22I mean, witness is probably the only argument you could make, I'd think.
- 40:25And it's a good argument to make too.
- 40:27Ryan: the Lost
- 40:27Kearns: No, no.
- 40:28He was in, um, he was in that one with the Irish guys.
- 40:31Uh, what the hell is that?
- 40:32Clear and Present
- 40:33Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 40:33Kearns: Harrison Ford?
- 40:34Ryan: Yep.
- 40:35Jon: Clear in present and Patriot games.
- 40:37Kearns: yeah, but
- 40:37Jon: He was great in both of those.
- 40:39Kearns: these are like, and The Fugitive, these are like those nineties era action,
- 40:43Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 40:43Kearns: Clancy slash John Grisham era sort of movies.
- 40:47And uh, well, I guess you could make the argument for a
- 40:49few good men on that too then.
- 40:51Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 40:52Kearns: like he's Harrison Ford's acting in most of these things.
- 40:56I think he does a better job in, the new TV show.
- 40:59He's in acting than he shrinking than he does in most of the movies that he's
- 41:03Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 41:04Kearns: movies are amazing and he performs well on them.
- 41:06It's just the movies don't demand an Oscar worthy performance from him.
- 41:11That's my argument.
- 41:13Ryan: He delivers
- 41:14Kearns: No, but I mean, he doesn't like he in order to fulfill the role.
- 41:17Like Indiana Jones isn't an Oscar winning performance.
- 41:19It's, it's an entertainment
- 41:21Jon: There, there was
- 41:22Ryan: that
- 41:22Jon: a time in our, a time in our history where a movie like Indiana
- 41:25Jones would've won a bunch of awards,
- 41:28Ryan: it should
- 41:29Jon: that would, if that was in the forties, that would probably
- 41:31be an Academy Award winner.
- 41:33Kearns: Like The Mummy.
- 41:34Jon: They loved those things.
- 41:36Kearns: up then.
- 41:38Ryan: Which one?
- 41:40Jon: The, the mummies,
- 41:41Ryan: Which one?
- 41:42Jon: the mummy still has some, not so great acting performances around it.
- 41:46Some of that is like if you go back and watch some of The Mummy, now some of
- 41:50those performances are a little rough,
- 41:52Kearns: I'm sure.
- 41:53I'm sure.
- 41:54But my, yeah, it's like I just, I'm okay with the news
- 41:57that Harrison Ford never won.
- 41:59You know, he didn't, he doesn't have the statue on his shelf, and I'm
- 42:02Jon: but I'm
- 42:03Kearns: fine with it too, because he's says, show me the money.
- 42:07Jon: mm-hmm.
- 42:09I, what I, what I think ultimately happens, he probably gets some kinda
- 42:12lifetime award because he seems more focused on the TV stuff at this point
- 42:17anyway, and they, but the Oscars also does this lifetime achievement thing.
- 42:24Kearns: Yeah, it's true.
- 42:25Jon: Amy Madigan as much won for playing for her role in weapons as she
- 42:31won for her whole career this year.
- 42:33Kearns: Yeah.
- 42:34Jon: Delroy Lindo, if he had won this year, you'd say the same thing.
- 42:38Paul Thomas Anderson won for the same reason, because he was probably snubbed
- 42:43at least two other times for other movies.
- 42:46Probably better movies than one Battle.
- 42:48Ryan: yep.
- 42:49Yep.
- 42:51I was gonna say
- 42:51Kearns: It's the other thing that's like, this is a recurring thing where the good
- 42:55movie doesn't win, or the best movie I should say, and their thing doesn't win.
- 42:58And that's 'cause of what it's up against at the time
- 43:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 43:01Kearns: And then you see like a Leo winning for The Revenant
- 43:04when you're like, oh my God,
- 43:06Jon: That,
- 43:06Kearns: not win for these other
- 43:08Jon: mm-hmm.
- 43:09Mm-hmm.
- 43:09Kearns: Revenant's a great movie, but compared to his other performances, you're
- 43:13like, well, he crawls around a lot and he's bleeding and it, it's real cold.
- 43:17Like it's not his best perform.
- 43:19I mean, I
- 43:19Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 43:19Kearns: that
- 43:20Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 43:20Kearns: Just put me outside
- 43:24Ryan: it's, you know, it's like the Scorsese thing.
- 43:27He went on to departed, but he had, there were so many other
- 43:30chances from the eighties.
- 43:32Like, I waved the raging Bull flag.
- 43:34He should have won it in 1980 for Raging Bull.
- 43:36Kearns: Raging Bull's a masterpiece.
- 43:38Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 43:38Ryan: they, they snubbed him.
- 43:40But it's like an ongoing pattern though.
- 43:42It's, it's no
- 43:43Jon: Yeah,
- 43:43Ryan: People see it.
- 43:44It's like, all right, we'll get you later, either 20 years down
- 43:47the line or two years down the line
- 43:50Jon: but it, I mean, it's a really bold thing to do.
- 43:53'cause you never know.
- 43:56and it's, it, that's, to me is always the frustrating part of the Academy Awards
- 44:00is knowing that something's either a lifetime achievement or a makeup award,
- 44:05and it's not always about the movie.
- 44:08That was the best, like, I mean, aside from the issues Frankenstein had with
- 44:12the way it was marketed and pushed of those guys, Guillermo Del Toros won.
- 44:18He's got his award.
- 44:21Ryan: Yeah.
- 44:22Kearns: true.
- 44:23Ryan: Shape
- 44:23Jon: know, you, yeah.
- 44:26He's got his, you can honor somebody else and you can make
- 44:30good with Paul Thomas Anderson.
- 44:31But now you, probably owe Ryan Coogler.
- 44:35Kearns: Yep.
- 44:36Well, one of the things I don't like about it is it because it instills
- 44:38that sense in them that they have to get this one or this one or
- 44:42Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 44:42Kearns: just be what's up that year?
- 44:45Jon: Yep.
- 44:45Kearns: the best?
- 44:46And
- 44:46Jon: Yep.
- 44:46Kearns: the case, Leo would probably have five.
- 44:48Five Oscars.
- 44:50Jon: Absolutely.
- 44:51He probably,
- 44:54Kearns: Morgan
- 44:54Jon: I don't,
- 44:55Kearns: probably have a couple
- 44:56Ryan: I mean his, his performance in Gilbert Grape real quick.
- 44:59It's
- 45:00Kearns: that should have been his first.
- 45:01Jon: mm-hmm.
- 45:02Ryan: percent.
- 45:03A hundred percent.
- 45:05Uh, Morgan Freeman.
- 45:06That, that's like, there's so many actors who
- 45:10Kearns: Could Mama Joan win for best supporting?
- 45:12Could the bed win for best supporting?
- 45:16if you've seen the movie, you understand the joke there.
- 45:18Listeners,
- 45:21it's my favorite part of the movie, when the house collapses.
- 45:24Ryan: just, oh, that's so darks, so dark.
- 45:28Mama.
- 45:29Kearns: I killed him, Gilbert.
- 45:31Oh man.
- 45:34I can't re-watch that movie 'cause it's so visceral for me.
- 45:36It's like, it's too much feeling I enjoyed seeing the art and feeling the
- 45:41feels, and now I'm like, all right.
- 45:43I, I'm good on that for a while.
- 45:45Jon: Mm.
- 45:46Kearns: It's like watching honey.
- 45:47I shrunk the kids.
- 45:48I don't need to see the murder Auntie again.
- 45:51He saved those children.
- 45:52Damnit.
- 45:53He's a real hero.
- 45:55Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 45:55Kearns: Oscar?
- 45:57Ryan: Rick Mariani
- 45:59Kearns: No, the an, the
- 46:00Jon: Rick Mores.
- 46:02Kearns: Rick Morran didn't save crap.
- 46:04Auntie saved those kids.
- 46:07I'll die on this anthill.
- 46:11Jon: Okay.
- 46:11Kearns: we should move on.
- 46:12Jon: Yeah.
- 46:15Back, back to sins.
- 46:16So I think you get a bunch of great performances in sin.
- 46:22I mean, I know you're not a Michael B. Jordan fan.
- 46:24I thought he was really good.
- 46:25It's, they sort of did a really good job of the parts where both
- 46:31smoke and stack are on screen
- 46:34Kearns: Yeah,
- 46:34Jon: it.
- 46:34Not looking like it's like either an image or AI or a stunt double or something.
- 46:40They did a really good job with that and he did a really good job of re
- 46:44creating two separate characters out of this role because smoke and Stack
- 46:51are definitely very different people.
- 46:55Ryan: Oh, a hundred
- 46:56Kearns: they are.
- 46:57And the script carries that through pretty
- 46:59Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 47:00Kearns: way they speak and one does with, uh,
- 47:03Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 47:04Kearns: Uh,
- 47:05Ryan: Mary.
- 47:06Kearns: Annie.
- 47:06Is it Annie
- 47:07Jon: Annie.
- 47:08Annie is smokes lady,
- 47:10Kearns: Yeah.
- 47:10Jon: and Mary is Stacks Lady.
- 47:12Like Smoke is the one who's holding the culture.
- 47:15You know, he's the, culture guy.
- 47:17Kearns: Yep.
- 47:19Ryan: Yep.
- 47:19And
- 47:20Kearns: But
- 47:20Ryan: changing with the times,
- 47:22Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 47:22Ryan: there's your acting with Michael B. Jordan.
- 47:24How, um, how can a man who can't act do two different roles at the same time?
- 47:29Kearns: he does the same thing in both roles.
- 47:31He reads the scripts for both characters the same way.
- 47:34Ryan: to, no.
- 47:35Kearns: will give you, I will give this up that he, in this movie, he does
- 47:40better than he's done in most other movies, but this is still, this is
- 47:45still the C minus performance Michael B. Jordan guy that I always see.
- 47:51could have been
- 47:51Jon: Uh.
- 47:51Kearns: out there, and I would've felt, and I would've felt like he would've
- 47:55Jon: I,
- 47:55Kearns: thing.
- 47:56Jon: no, I,
- 47:57Ryan: Drum
- 47:57Jon: got, I, I gotta push back on this one.
- 48:00Michael B. Jordan is so good in this.
- 48:03He's, he is exactly what this movie needs.
- 48:06Kearns: He
- 48:06Jon: I mean, but everybody, Jack O'Connell, our buddy Jack O'Connell,
- 48:10showing up as Remic is incredible.
- 48:13In, in the minutes that he gets,
- 48:15Kearns: getting, we're getting to the vampire.
- 48:16He does do a pretty good job.
- 48:18Jon: he's a, yeah,
- 48:18Kearns: Um,
- 48:19Jon: I mean, he,
- 48:20Kearns: job.
- 48:20Jon: he's, he,
- 48:21Kearns: over the only white guy in the
- 48:23Jon: he's,
- 48:23Kearns: that I've just been crapping all over Michael B. Jordan.
- 48:25So he is, he did fine.
- 48:27Jon: he's, he's clearly, clearly developed a very good villain
- 48:34persona between this and,
- 48:36Kearns: You know
- 48:37Jon: and Bone Temple.
- 48:38Like he's such a good villain at this point.
- 48:41Kearns: It's my, it's wow.
- 48:43He looks so different
- 48:45Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 48:46Kearns: than he does in the movie.
- 48:47That's insane.
- 48:48But it's seeing Omar Benson, right?
- 48:50Jamie Lawson and Delroy Lindo.
- 48:53And that's, kind of the reason why these other performances are so freaking good.
- 48:58Sammy, I can't remember his name.
- 49:00Jon: miles, Katten,
- 49:01Ryan: Can it,
- 49:02Kearns: I mean the, level of absolute passion that leaks
- 49:05from their performances.
- 49:06And then you get Michael B. Jordan, and I know John and I'm done, I'm done now.
- 49:10But like, that's what I'm saying is the cast is so powerful in this too.
- 49:14And then the lead is, I'm like, okay, it's this guy again.
- 49:18So maybe it's my bias.
- 49:19Yeah, no, the lead, the
- 49:23Jon: and
- 49:23Kearns: with two different jackets on.
- 49:25Jon: I mean, sinners made other award history as well.
- 49:28Kearns: Yes it
- 49:28Jon: You get the first woman to win a best cinematography award, which is insane.
- 49:34Kearns: That one is awesome.
- 49:36But they stole that from Train Dreams.
- 49:38I'm
- 49:38Jon: Yeah, probably.
- 49:39Probably.
- 49:40But.
- 49:40Kearns: movie if you And
- 49:41Ryan: though.
- 49:42Kearns: I love the cinematography in Train Dreams though.
- 49:44Jon: Train.
- 49:45Kearns: it.
- 49:45Jon: Train Dreams has the same problem.
- 49:47Frankenstein had.
- 49:48Netflix didn't push anything this year.
- 49:52Ryan: No they didn't.
- 49:53Kearns: they probably were told not to like sit back and shut up
- 49:56Jon: I mean,
- 49:57Ryan: Things.
- 49:58mean, you got two movies that are Oscar nominated.
- 50:01I would've promoted those heavily over Stranger Think Season five.
- 50:05Kearns: They were hoping to make another a
- 50:06Jon: well,
- 50:06Kearns: subs.
- 50:07Again, people forget they're subscribed for
- 50:09Jon: yeah,
- 50:10Kearns: all
- 50:10Jon: yeah.
- 50:11Stranger Things is the money that affords train dreams and Frankenstein.
- 50:17Ryan: Uh, true,
- 50:18Jon: So they, they're gonna push that every time, but that doesn't
- 50:20mean you can't push the other things.
- 50:22That's the frustrating part
- 50:24Kearns: They
- 50:24Jon: is you could have pushed them.
- 50:25Ryan: There's gotta be an even level of like distribution when it comes to it
- 50:31Jon: Well, I mean, the distribution, the distribution is even, it's all there.
- 50:36It's all in the same place.
- 50:37Everybody has the same access,
- 50:39Ryan: meaning advertising
- 50:40Jon: Yeah.
- 50:40You They did, they didn't put on the Oscar campaigns that these other movies did.
- 50:46And, uh, movies that win do like that.
- 50:50I mean, Miramax always understood that the Weinsteins stole awards for years
- 50:57just based on the amount of marketing they did around getting the award.
- 51:02Kearns: They knew how to play the game.
- 51:03Jon: Yeah.
- 51:04Shakespeare and Love is a best picture winner.
- 51:06Kearns: Ew.
- 51:07Ryan: Yeah,
- 51:07Kearns: I could never figure that out by the way.
- 51:09Ryan: Yeah,
- 51:10Jon: It's the,
- 51:11Ryan: why.
- 51:11Jon: the amount of money and advertising they put into winning that award.
- 51:17Kearns: Wow.
- 51:19Jon: That was the goal with that movie Win the Academy Award.
- 51:23Ryan: And if people weren't watching all the movies, I mean, you keep seeing it.
- 51:26Oh man, this must be good.
- 51:28People said it's good.
- 51:29All right.
- 51:29Let's vote for it.
- 51:31Jon: Yeah.
- 51:31I.
- 51:32Ryan: Redo,
- 51:33Jon: Hopefully some of that goes away with new rules.
- 51:36I mean, I don't, know their full enforcement on it.
- 51:40I would imagine it's, streamed somehow,
- 51:44Kearns: Yeah,
- 51:45Jon: but I don't, know that you can.
- 51:46I mean, who's to say you don't just put that stream on and walk away to fulfill
- 51:51the requirements so you can vote for your friend who made whatever other movie.
- 51:55Kearns: that's true.
- 51:56Ryan: Okay.
- 51:56Okay.
- 51:58Kearns: That's true.
- 51:59I forgot about nepotism
- 52:01Jon: I mean, it, and it's, it's, it's also the fact that you, you're
- 52:04judging art and who's to judge art.
- 52:08Kearns: Fair.
- 52:09I mean,
- 52:09Ryan: Yep.
- 52:11Art
- 52:12Kearns: I am not gonna get drawn into this one.
- 52:14Ryan: oh no, I'll get drawn it.
- 52:15Film is art as we're saying.
- 52:17It's like some people like it, some people don't.
- 52:20You know, it's based on whatever tastes like.
- 52:23I just picked up ice wide shut.
- 52:25Some people love it, some people hate it.
- 52:28Kearns: I like when the rich people put on the Illuminati masks and have an orgy.
- 52:33That's, that's,
- 52:34Ryan: part of the films.
- 52:35Kearns: yeah.
- 52:35It's like the whole movie to me.
- 52:36'cause that's all I remember watching when I was 13.
- 52:41Ryan: you know what, it's the lore that goes behind it that after released
- 52:44Stanley Kubrick dies mysteriously of a heart attack 14 days later.
- 52:49that
- 52:49Kearns: Boom, boom, boom.
- 52:51Ryan: it's like that, like hidden connection.
- 52:53Like, is this what really the elite does?
- 52:55But people hate it because of
- 52:57Kearns: I mean, Epstein files are out, so I think the, the word is out.
- 53:01This is exactly what they do.
- 53:05Oh boy.
- 53:06I wonder if YouTube soft bands for Epstein files.
- 53:10Ryan: Uh, I don't think so.
- 53:11Kearns: did the, I
- 53:12Jon: Probably,
- 53:12Kearns: learned a new
- 53:13Jon: probably not.
- 53:14Kearns: Yeah, you're probably right actually.
- 53:15'cause it's getting clicks.
- 53:16Jon: It probably gets promoted.
- 53:18Ryan: Yeah.
- 53:18Kearns: Epstein, Epstein, uh, so back to it.
- 53:23we're about 55 minutes in and we, haven't even done a review yet.
- 53:27Jon: Oh, this could be a really good rant.
- 53:29so do you guys want to hear what, before we give you our opinions,
- 53:32do you guys want to hear what some other people had to think of sinners?
- 53:35Kearns: Why?
- 53:36Yes,
- 53:37Ryan: but
- 53:37Kearns: I do.
- 53:38Ryan: it'll be a Travis.
- 53:39He, someone gave like a half star, one star 'cause
- 53:41Kearns: sure these are cogent reviews that are
- 53:43Jon: Yeah.
- 53:44Um,
- 53:44Kearns: and
- 53:44Jon: I, I'm, I'm sure
- 53:45Kearns: in any kind of bias.
- 53:46Jon: I, I, I'm sure no one was racist in their review of this movie.
- 53:51Um, so to start with, it took a little digging to find the bad reviews.
- 53:56This is 97% critic score on Rotten Tomato and 96%
- 54:02Kearns: am into my,
- 54:02Jon: audience.
- 54:03Kearns: being so critical of this film.
- 54:04Jon: 96% audience score.
- 54:07So like they sinners hit for a lot of people.
- 54:12five stars, very twisted and intense.
- 54:16You won't be able to take your eyes off the screen because of how
- 54:19much action and tension there is.
- 54:22Michael B. Jordan was excellent as always, but Miles Katten really
- 54:27surprised me and was fantastic too.
- 54:30Lots of unexpected moments throughout the film.
- 54:33Another masterpiece from Ryan Coogler.
- 54:36Ryan: A hundred percent agree,
- 54:38Jon: I would
- 54:40Kearns: agree.
- 54:43Jon: to, to me this is, I've seen most of the Ryan Coogler movies and I mean,
- 54:49I think it's pretty well established.
- 54:50I'm not a Marvel DC kind of guy.
- 54:54Kearns: Yeah,
- 54:55Jon: This is for me, for me, this is light years above anything he's ever done.
- 55:02Ryan: Agreed.
- 55:02Kearns: fair.
- 55:03Jon: this guy doesn't think he's so one star.
- 55:07This is the dumbest movie I've ever seen.
- 55:11It was so bad.
- 55:12I made a Rotten Tomatoes account just to make sure it doesn't keep
- 55:17the 97% review it has at the moment.
- 55:20Kearns: does and that this is the second time I review.
- 55:23You've read his
- 55:24Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 55:25Mm-hmm.
- 55:27How, how did this win an Oscar?
- 55:30It didn't.
- 55:31The plot was weak.
- 55:33Acting was mid, and the horror lasted 20 minutes.
- 55:39Kearns: Yeah.
- 55:39But I bet you he loves from dust till dawn.
- 55:42Jon: I'm sure he does.
- 55:43Kearns: not mid, and please once again, do not let my hatred of Michael B
- 55:47Jordan's acting skills overshadow the phenomenal acting done by this entire cast
- 55:53Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 55:53Kearns: Michael B. Jordan.
- 55:55Jon: Uh, we
- 55:56Ryan: Zach?
- 55:56Jon: plot.
- 55:57We spent the whole first 20 minutes of this episode detailing how he
- 56:01weaved so much history into the plot.
- 56:04Ryan: Yep.
- 56:04Kearns: for real.
- 56:05Jon: if, you've read a book, you understand
- 56:08Kearns: Well,
- 56:08Jon: amount of detail.
- 56:10Ryan: Yep.
- 56:10Kearns: there's the problem right there.
- 56:12And the
- 56:12Jon: our
- 56:13Kearns: they're made to read in school, were like, wait,
- 56:15Jon: mm-hmm.
- 56:16Kearns: No, we didn't.
- 56:16My dad told
- 56:17Jon: And,
- 56:17Kearns: didn't.
- 56:18Jon: and if our one star hasn't read a book, our half star probably
- 56:24needed help typing his review.
- 56:26Kearns: Oh boy.
- 56:27Ryan: Oh.
- 56:28Jon: Half star.
- 56:31Degenerate, disgusting, filthy, and filled with lies.
- 56:37Kearns: Oh.
- 56:37Jon: What lies, I don't know if you could, clarify what lie
- 56:41is told in a fictional movie.
- 56:44What A lot of woke BS trash movies like this only hurt black people
- 56:52by making them look horrible.
- 56:55So first off, I would like to know what in this movie makes anybody look horrible?
- 57:01Kearns: I mean, it's the,
- 57:03Ryan: Mississippi?
- 57:04Kearns: they're
- 57:04Jon: You.
- 57:05Kearns: on, the fact that they're running an illegal, uh,
- 57:07you know, contraband business.
- 57:09But if this was a bunch of white people doing the same thing, you'd be
- 57:12thinking like, oh, Bonnie and Clyde or GG, and you'd be cool with it.
- 57:18Jon: Have you watched any Prohibition set movie?
- 57:20And you were fine with that?
- 57:21I just said, what before?
- 57:23Is the Breakfast Club one of your favorite movies because that's
- 57:27white people behaving badly.
- 57:29Kearns: Well, what's the one with, uh, shy Lab Boof and Tom Hardy?
- 57:32Um, lawless.
- 57:34Ryan: Wallace?
- 57:34Yep.
- 57:35Kearns: Yeah.
- 57:35Lawless is
- 57:36Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 57:37Kearns: like lawless, but you hated this, then you're a racist
- 57:39Jon: did you hate Roadhouse?
- 57:41So
- 57:41Kearns: roadhouse.
- 57:43Jon: listen, thi
- 57:43Ryan: Roadhouse.
- 57:44Jon: thi
- 57:44Ryan: touch that.
- 57:45Jon: this is simple.
- 57:46I know we've said going, uh, through the course of this whole podcast, we
- 57:49didn't want to get terribly political.
- 57:52Kearns: This
- 57:52Jon: is not a, this is not a political statement.
- 57:55Human rights equality are not.
- 57:58Political.
- 58:00If, this is your reason for not liking this movie, this is a
- 58:04you problem, you are a racist,
- 58:09Ryan: Preach,
- 58:09Jon: period.
- 58:10Full stop.
- 58:12You don't have to like sinners.
- 58:15You, there are reasons to not like it.
- 58:17It's
- 58:17Kearns: I
- 58:18Jon: fine.
- 58:19It's, it's,
- 58:20Ryan: it now?
- 58:21Jon: it's, it's fine to not think Sinners is the best movie ever.
- 58:26It's fine to watch sinners and say, you know, it feels a
- 58:29lot like from Dust till dawn.
- 58:30That's fine.
- 58:31I think you're wrong.
- 58:32I think you've missed a lot of the point, but it's fine.
- 58:36But if your reason,
- 58:38Kearns: and they
- 58:38Jon: if, if your reason for not liking this is because it's a black movie,
- 58:45because the white people are villains.
- 58:47You're a racist.
- 58:49It's 1930s Mississippi.
- 58:51Who do you think the bad guy is to the black guy?
- 58:56Ryan: I thought it was the
- 58:57Jon: It's, it's the white people.
- 59:00It no matter, no matter what you do with this movie, it, if you're
- 59:05setting it at that time, place, time period, and you are not, and
- 59:12the white people are the good guys.
- 59:14You've written the wrong movie.
- 59:15You've written the racist movie
- 59:17Kearns: they're not the good guys,
- 59:19Jon: and at, at the, at the end of the day.
- 59:21One more, one more bit of this rant.
- 59:23At the end of the day, REMIC is not a racist.
- 59:29Ryan: No, he's
- 59:29Jon: If you listen to him talk, it's community, it's freedom, it's unity.
- 59:35The first two people, he bites sure as hell are racists.
- 59:38Ryan: Yep.
- 59:38Jon: Remic is not.
- 59:41Kearns: Yeah, he just, he gets the clans members, so
- 59:44Jon: And,
- 59:44Kearns: associate him with the clan.
- 59:46Jon: and, and if you don't stand up the last five minutes and
- 59:49cheer when smoke is mowing down.
- 59:53A ton of Klansmen.
- 59:55If you're not cheering at that moment, you are the problem
- 59:58Ryan: Yep.
- 59:59Agreed.
- 1:00:00Jon: end rant.
- 1:00:02Kearns: like you as a person because your outrage is very righteous in this
- 1:00:07and it's aimed in the right direction, at least according to my moral compass.
- 1:00:10And I just enjoyed that very much.
- 1:00:12Jon: Thank you.
- 1:00:13Kearns: and I always agree with you and you were Jesus.
- 1:00:15So,
- 1:00:16Ryan: Yep.
- 1:00:17Jon: So
- 1:00:17Kearns: I mean,
- 1:00:18Jon: that said, how many five stars do we have here?
- 1:00:24Kearns: I'll go last for dramatic effect 'cause we all know I'm
- 1:00:27gonna be lower than you guys.
- 1:00:29Jon: Go ahead, Ryan.
- 1:00:30You
- 1:00:30Kearns: score.
- 1:00:30Jon: start.
- 1:00:31Ryan: I five out five.
- 1:00:32It just does everything right.
- 1:00:34The writing's great.
- 1:00:35It's an original screenplay.
- 1:00:37Googler hits every beat.
- 1:00:38Kearns: Oh.
- 1:00:38Ryan: It gives you a backstory, builds up on the horror, and when the horror
- 1:00:43hits, it keeps the audience wanting more.
- 1:00:46I mean.
- 1:00:47It also like, kinda like gives the audience the control because you
- 1:00:50know, like when people are walking into the parking lot and the vampires
- 1:00:54are there, they're like, oh, you know that, something's gonna happen.
- 1:00:57And like that not like in, you're suspenseful on some
- 1:01:02things, but you're not.
- 1:01:03And on the other part.
- 1:01:05And it's a nice balancing act.
- 1:01:07So five Outta five,
- 1:01:08Kearns: It's a, it's a perfect movie.
- 1:01:11Ryan: I think it's a perfect move.
- 1:01:12Yeah.
- 1:01:12You want me to be 4.75?
- 1:01:15Kearns: That's what,
- 1:01:15Jon: No, don't, don't,
- 1:01:16Kearns: okay.
- 1:01:17Jon: don't let him.
- 1:01:17Don't let him, don't let him talk.
- 1:01:19You off of your five.
- 1:01:21You had a five.
- 1:01:22Don't get talked off of a five.
- 1:01:24Kearns: down, he got talked down.
- 1:01:26He got talked down.
- 1:01:26Ryan: John
- 1:01:27Kearns: It happened.
- 1:01:28I influenced him.
- 1:01:29Ryan: 5.1.
- 1:01:30Jon: You are not talking me Off of my five.
- 1:01:33To me, there are four movies that came out last year.
- 1:01:37Four movies that came out last year that I believe are perfect.
- 1:01:41Five out of five movies.
- 1:01:43They are Begonia,
- 1:01:45Kearns: Yes.
- 1:01:46Jon: one Battle,
- 1:01:47Ryan: Yep,
- 1:01:49Kearns: Yes.
- 1:01:50Jon: and Sinners.
- 1:01:51Ryan: yep.
- 1:01:51Jon: these four me.
- 1:01:52If any one of these four had won Best Picture, I would've been fine.
- 1:01:56I think Sinners should have won because of all of the significance,
- 1:02:00because of, as we talked about to start this episode, how much time
- 1:02:04Coler put into building the world.
- 1:02:08I mean, this could have been an hour and a half vampires attacking a juke
- 1:02:11joint movie without any of the buildup, without any of the history, without any
- 1:02:16of the things that make that significant.
- 1:02:18And it would've been a fine horror movie.
- 1:02:20It would've been fine.
- 1:02:22He took the time and the effort to create this world.
- 1:02:26He managed to get these performances.
- 1:02:29It's beautifully shot.
- 1:02:31The music, I mean, we've talked about the music, but the
- 1:02:34score too is just fantastic.
- 1:02:38And that's probably as big a snub as this movie Faced was not winning Best
- 1:02:44song and understand the K-Pop Demon Hunters song was a juggernaut and nothing
- 1:02:50would've beat it, but so sinners five.
- 1:02:53Kearns: It's not even the best song in that movie that I watched with my kids
- 1:02:56400 times, by the way, what it sounds like is the far superior song in that
- 1:03:01movie, but Golden one, so, okay, whatever.
- 1:03:04And also Sinners should have won that hands down.
- 1:03:07You're absolutely right.
- 1:03:08Ryan: Yes.
- 1:03:08Kearns: Um, the ending of this movie is so phenomenally good and well done.
- 1:03:13By the way, I, when I was watching it, I was sitting there thinking to
- 1:03:16my, I've been highly critical of the movie, the entire podcast, everybody.
- 1:03:20But I did love this movie.
- 1:03:21my dislike or disenchantment with Michael B. Jordan doesn't
- 1:03:24take too much off the top.
- 1:03:26This is a fantastic movie.
- 1:03:27but that the ending was where I really thought this thing was gonna fall apart.
- 1:03:31I really thought he was gonna bomb he took the Michael, or no, not
- 1:03:35Michael B. Jordan, the, uh, Jordan Peel sort of algorithm that had
- 1:03:40been going around for these movies.
- 1:03:41And he added real soul to it sinners.
- 1:03:45Not, it was a, it was a period piece.
- 1:03:47It's a movie about black America.
- 1:03:49It's a movie about what their experience was like in the south and it pulls
- 1:03:53in all this culture and everything.
- 1:03:56And it's not just like get out where it's like we live in a house and they
- 1:03:59live in a house over there and they're gonna steal your body or the other ones.
- 1:04:04There's so much depth to this film, which makes it phenomenal.
- 1:04:08But I really do think the ending really cinch the deal.
- 1:04:10If you guys, I'm not gonna mention, because some people probably will listen
- 1:04:13to this without having seen sinners.
- 1:04:15Jon: this is the least we've ever spoiled a movie.
- 1:04:18Kearns: Yeah, probably.
- 1:04:19And I think that's by design, to be honest with you.
- 1:04:21I don't wanna spoil this movie.
- 1:04:22Um, give this a 4.5, I give it a 4.5.
- 1:04:27Ryan: 4.75?
- 1:04:28Kearns: Nah, and I can't go up to 4, 7, 5.
- 1:04:30Buddy, you went down to 4, 7, 5, so that's good.
- 1:04:33Ryan: I mean you can, oh, no, no.
- 1:04:35It's written down.
- 1:04:36Kearns: It's not a perfect, it's not a perfect movie.
- 1:04:38There's some, there's some smears in it and stuff like that.
- 1:04:41And I really do think the worst part of this movie is Michael v Jordan's acting.
- 1:04:45really do.
- 1:04:46But Coogler crushes it in this, the ensemble, the rest of the cast,
- 1:04:49too many to name all have breakout performances, best performances
- 1:04:53you could ever hope to expect.
- 1:04:55the level of detail in the wardrobe and everything else is an unbelievable movie.
- 1:05:01I would've loved to see this win best picture this year.
- 1:05:04Obviously I want Train Dreams to win, but that's because that hits me so
- 1:05:07uniquely as at where I am in life and the, and I worked on the railroad and
- 1:05:12the movies, got the railroad and it's a period piece and all that crap.
- 1:05:16But I would've been delighted to see Sinners win over, won Battle.
- 1:05:20I think it's a better movie.
- 1:05:21I just do.
- 1:05:22Jon: I do too,
- 1:05:23Ryan: Yes,
- 1:05:24Kearns: and
- 1:05:24Jon: and I, I, I love one battle,
- 1:05:26Kearns: yeah, one battle's good too.
- 1:05:28But yeah, I mean, I wasn't doing devil's advocate, I was just being super critical
- 1:05:31of what I was critical of for the movie
- 1:05:33Jon: mm-hmm.
- 1:05:34Kearns: the show.
- 1:05:34But it's, it is a fantastic
- 1:05:36Jon: But I think, it works to have a balance too, with how
- 1:05:40much Ryan and I liked sinners.
- 1:05:43Ryan: Yep.
- 1:05:43Kearns: Piece
- 1:05:43Jon: It's good.
- 1:05:45It's good to have a little bit of balance in there, or else it's
- 1:05:47just, you know, now an hour and 10 minutes of us raving about a movie.
- 1:05:52Kearns: I don't want people listening to think that that's what I was doing.
- 1:05:55It's just, I wanted to make sure that I got
- 1:05:57Jon: Yeah.
- 1:05:58Kearns: home on the,
- 1:05:59Jon: Yeah.
- 1:05:59Kearns: talk about Remic, um, doing the Irish, the, uh, the jig.
- 1:06:03Because you brought up, you brought up Well, yeah.
- 1:06:07When he's river dancing, and I was like, the Irish weren't slave owners.
- 1:06:10'cause John brought up the fact that Remic isn't a racist.
- 1:06:13Ryan: Nope.
- 1:06:13Kearns: if you're watching the movie, it, and you're me, and you're, and
- 1:06:17I'm not fully Irish or anything, but you're watching it and you're going,
- 1:06:19wait, but that, that makes it seem like the Irish were slave owners.
- 1:06:23Were they racist?
- 1:06:24Probably a
- 1:06:26Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:06:26Kearns: they were also not very, they weren't much higher.
- 1:06:29On the, social totem pole than black Americans at the
- 1:06:32Jon: Yeah.
- 1:06:33Kearns: either.
- 1:06:33So like I had a problem with that for such a long time and just doing this show
- 1:06:37tonight, John kind of shut me down on that
- 1:06:39Jon: Well, I mean, really the first two people he bites are not people
- 1:06:45who would've been slave owners either.
- 1:06:47Kearns: now.
- 1:06:47They're poor whites,
- 1:06:48Jon: Yep,
- 1:06:50Kearns: they're
- 1:06:50Jon: yep.
- 1:06:51Kearns: The, usually the most visceral and venomous of the whites,
- 1:06:54Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:06:55Kearns: whites.
- 1:06:57Jon: Yeah.
- 1:06:57Well, they, that's who they're competing with.
- 1:06:59That's who they, the elites have set the system up for them to compete with,
- 1:07:05Ryan: Yep.
- 1:07:05Kearns: indeed.
- 1:07:07Jon: but then that'll get way political and we'd be on here for another hour and
- 1:07:11a half if we start going down that route.
- 1:07:13Kearns: We're gonna have to roll on the top fives for sure.
- 1:07:15'cause we're already long on this episode.
- 1:07:17Ryan: All right.
- 1:07:18Top fives.
- 1:07:19Top fives.
- 1:07:20Tonight I went with Top Five Academy Award-winning in which
- 1:07:23Hoz took comb an Academy Award.
- 1:07:25And we're gonna start off.
- 1:07:26This will be quick and painless.
- 1:07:28Don't worry.
- 1:07:28I prepared for this one.
- 1:07:30We're gonna start off with number five at the 72nd Academy Award.
- 1:07:34The 72nd Oscars, nominated for best cinematography and best costumes design.
- 1:07:40But winning for best art direction was Sleepy Hollow,
- 1:07:43Kearns: Oh, I forgot about that.
- 1:07:45Ryan: Oh, I was, when I was doing the research, I was
- 1:07:47pretty shocked it won an Oscar.
- 1:07:49But thinking about it, it was the, um, the art direction was done really well,
- 1:07:54but the cinematography, thinking about it like that dread, but like being upstate
- 1:07:59New York, it, Tim Burn did it very well.
- 1:08:02Kearns: I was gonna say, it's Burton, so that's why.
- 1:08:04Ryan: Oh God.
- 1:08:05Yeah.
- 1:08:06But it works in that
- 1:08:07Jon: It looks like a Burton movie.
- 1:08:09Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 1:08:09Ryan: hundred percent.
- 1:08:10A hundred percent.
- 1:08:11Which we're gonna go to number four.
- 1:08:14We mentioned it earlier in John's top.
- 1:08:16Uh, well slash and Stash.
- 1:08:18I'm saying top five, top 10, but, uh, slash and Stash.
- 1:08:21And that's at the 90th, Oscars.
- 1:08:24winning for original screenplay.
- 1:08:26Nominated for best picture.
- 1:08:27Best director.
- 1:08:29Best actor for Daniel Kalu as, Chris Washington.
- 1:08:32That was Get Out, that's at number four, so I slashed it, but you know, I kept it.
- 1:08:41Number three,
- 1:08:42Kearns: pegged it
- 1:08:43Ryan: I no
- 1:08:44Kearns: on the board.
- 1:08:44He pegged it.
- 1:08:45Yep.
- 1:08:46Jon: You pegged it.
- 1:08:47Kearns: Pegged it real good.
- 1:08:48Ryan: I pegged it real good.
- 1:08:49Yeah.
- 1:08:49With a Thumbtack, which
- 1:08:51Kearns: And then they were saying net out.
- 1:08:55I.
- 1:08:56Ryan: Number three.
- 1:08:57the 15th Oscars.
- 1:08:59It was nominated for music scoring and sound recording, but won art direction
- 1:09:03and color and cinematography and color.
- 1:09:05And that was, Phantom of the Opera.
- 1:09:061943. it was the first universal horror film to win an Oscar, the only one, as
- 1:09:13well as the first film to be in color.
- 1:09:16you have other movies at the time, mark of Zoro, being one with Tyrone Power.
- 1:09:20They tried to change it from black and white to color and it didn't work.
- 1:09:24Family of the Opera with Claude Rains did.
- 1:09:27Yeah, it's Universal.
- 1:09:29Had more money, I think.
- 1:09:30Marcus Aro was Warner Brothers, so their colorization didn't, it didn't work.
- 1:09:35It did not work.
- 1:09:36Which leads to number two, Rosemary's baby.
- 1:09:40I'm just gonna give it off.
- 1:09:41Yeah.
- 1:09:4141st, Oscar.
- 1:09:43It was, nominated for best screenplay, which I believe should have.
- 1:09:47Lansky did an awesome job, but, supporting actress Ruth Gordon won for
- 1:09:52mini cast oft, and that leads to number one named after our podcast, nominated
- 1:09:58for Art Direction, but won best visual effects at the 52nd Oscars was Alien.
- 1:10:03Kearns: Yeah, that's well deserved win too.
- 1:10:06Ryan: Oh, I cinematography.
- 1:10:09Should have been up there for it, I feel.
- 1:10:11But Art Direction being nominated, school Visual effects at that time for 79.
- 1:10:17I am not a shocker.
- 1:10:18Kearns: It's a puppet and a guy in a suit and.
- 1:10:20Ryan: I,
- 1:10:21Kearns: way they made the ship.
- 1:10:23Also, people forget the beginning of the movie with them landing and the
- 1:10:26atmosphere, the mist and everything.
- 1:10:27It was pretty good.
- 1:10:28Ryan: oh God.
- 1:10:29Kearns: Pretty well done
- 1:10:30Ryan: Cameron, Cameron took that award two years later for Aliens.
- 1:10:36Kearns: Yeah, he stole it.
- 1:10:37Ryan: Well, he, yes he did.
- 1:10:39And
- 1:10:39Kearns: He stole it.
- 1:10:40Ryan: he stole it from the thing.
- 1:10:41Oh no, 86 Aliens was 86.
- 1:10:45Kearns: The thing in Aliens was the same year.
- 1:10:48Ryan: no.
- 1:10:48The thing was 82.
- 1:10:49Kearns: Oh, I was gonna say, what a freaking travesty
- 1:10:53Ryan: I I in that case, what would you choose the thing?
- 1:10:56Or
- 1:10:56Kearns: the thing is a thing I love Aliens.
- 1:11:00Aliens might be one of my favorite, like of that movies in that genre and stuff
- 1:11:04like that where it's action horror ish.
- 1:11:08That's probably like Terminator and all that stuff.
- 1:11:10I think Aliens beats even Terminator one for me.
- 1:11:13I love aliens.
- 1:11:15Terminator One's a great movie too.
- 1:11:17People forget about that.
- 1:11:18Like Rocky one versus all the other movies.
- 1:11:20It's a different thing.
- 1:11:22Ryan: Oh,
- 1:11:22Kearns: Terminator One compared to all the other ones.
- 1:11:24It's a different thing.
- 1:11:26Terminator One is a masterpiece, but aliens
- 1:11:29Ryan: horror
- 1:11:29Kearns: Oh, I love it so much.
- 1:11:32They come out at night mostly.
- 1:11:35Ryan: I mean, imagine Cameron saying if they only asked me to do
- 1:11:38Alien three, he would've done it.
- 1:11:42Kearns: Oh, can you imagine?
- 1:11:43Can you imagine?
- 1:11:44Ryan: The alien dog from Cameron's mind.
- 1:11:47Kearns: Right.
- 1:11:48The bull alien, they named it later on.
- 1:11:52Because isn't that the one that came outta the cat?
- 1:11:53Because,
- 1:11:54Ryan: Um, is
- 1:11:56Kearns: because
- 1:11:56Ryan: cat?
- 1:11:57Kearns: Xenos take on the DNA traits of its host creature.
- 1:12:00So yeah.
- 1:12:02So, yeah.
- 1:12:03Isn't that interesting?
- 1:12:04Anyway, we could talk about that for about 10 hours.
- 1:12:06So we're not gonna John.
- 1:12:10Ryan: I,
- 1:12:10Jon: Mine's gonna be in a similar vein.
- 1:12:12Um, I'm gonna be, I'm gonna be really short.
- 1:12:15I don't have descriptions of movies because it's all movies you should know.
- 1:12:18it's five, technically six nominated and or winning performances.
- 1:12:27so my number five, we're gonna go start with this year and
- 1:12:30Amy Madigan for weapons, which I mean, I really, really love.
- 1:12:36Weapons was such a good movie, but it's so much better because of her performance
- 1:12:42that it doesn't work without somebody.
- 1:12:44Pulling off that role the way she does.
- 1:12:47my number four is Kathy Bates for misery again.
- 1:12:53That, menace that she brings to that character really kind of out of nowhere.
- 1:12:59Like I, she wasn't a particularly known per actress at that point in time.
- 1:13:04And here she is with that menace and fear instilling performance.
- 1:13:11my number three is from Shadow of the Vampire.
- 1:13:15It's Willam.
- 1:13:15Defoe.
- 1:13:16Kearns: Oh, nice dude.
- 1:13:17Jon: Yeah.
- 1:13:18It's, he's so good in that.
- 1:13:20It's such a good movie.
- 1:13:21I, it was.
- 1:13:22I feel like that's one of the, the horror movies that was pretty ignored.
- 1:13:27Kearns: Has he won an Oscar?
- 1:13:29Ryan: No,
- 1:13:30Jon: to look.
- 1:13:31Kearns: Whoa.
- 1:13:32Jon: I don't, I don't know.
- 1:13:33Ryan: so.
- 1:13:33Jon: don't know that that's a no.
- 1:13:34He might have one.
- 1:13:37Ryan: I'm looking it up.
- 1:13:38Jon: I'd have to, I would have to look.
- 1:13:40I don't know that off the top of my head.
- 1:13:42Ryan: Okay.
- 1:13:42He was nominated for four Academy Awards,
- 1:13:46Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:13:47Kearns: Oh yeah.
- 1:13:49Jon: He has no wins.
- 1:13:50That's crazy.
- 1:13:52Kearns: dude.
- 1:13:53Jon: That's crazy.
- 1:13:54Ryan: nominated
- 1:13:54Kearns: his face?
- 1:13:55Jon: Didn't he play Jesus?
- 1:13:57Kearns: Brendan Frazier beat him one year.
- 1:14:00Jon: Didn't he play Jesus?
- 1:14:02How did he not win for playing Jesus?
- 1:14:05Ryan: He didn't
- 1:14:05Kearns: my God.
- 1:14:06Ryan: get nominated that year for it.
- 1:14:07He got nominated for Platoon.
- 1:14:09Best Supporting Actor.
- 1:14:10Best Supporting Actor for Shadow
- 1:14:12Jon: How does he not get nominated for Jesus?
- 1:14:15Kearns: JK Simmons.
- 1:14:15Beating him for whiplash is okay.
- 1:14:17I accept that.
- 1:14:20But oh my God,
- 1:14:21Ryan: It's
- 1:14:22Kearns: I
- 1:14:22Ryan: tempo.
- 1:14:23Kearns: my tempo.
- 1:14:23Ryan: Not my tempo.
- 1:14:26Kearns: Oh
- 1:14:26Jon: number, my number two is a twofer.
- 1:14:30Ryan: Ooh,
- 1:14:31Jon: so we're gonna go to Carrie and it's Sissy Spacey and Piper Lori.
- 1:14:35Were both nominated that year
- 1:14:37Kearns: that's
- 1:14:37Jon: and they really, really nailed their roles in that.
- 1:14:40And my number one, we're gonna go back to a movie that Ryan brought
- 1:14:43up, or, well, that we just discussed.
- 1:14:47Aliens and Sigourney Weaver.
- 1:14:50Ryan: ooh.
- 1:14:50Jon: Best actress, nominee for Aliens.
- 1:14:54Kearns: She, yeah, she didn't win it.
- 1:14:55Right?
- 1:14:55Who beat her that year?
- 1:14:57Jon: Uh, I don't know off the top of my head, but she's another
- 1:15:00one with no Academy Awards.
- 1:15:02Three time loser.
- 1:15:03Kearns: a travesty.
- 1:15:04Ryan: Yeah, it is.
- 1:15:05Jon: Three time loser.
- 1:15:06Ryan: bitch.
- 1:15:09Three times
- 1:15:11Jon: Three time loser.
- 1:15:11Ryan: times.
- 1:15:12Jon: Yep.
- 1:15:13Um, she was nominated
- 1:15:14Kearns: She was
- 1:15:15Jon: Aliens,
- 1:15:16Kearns: right?
- 1:15:16Jon: gorillas in the Mist and Working Girl.
- 1:15:19Kearns: Oh, Marley Matlin for Children of a Lesser God.
- 1:15:24Jon: I mean.
- 1:15:25Kearns: Who's I?
- 1:15:28I I have trouble with that one because never seen the movie,
- 1:15:32but it sounds really bad.
- 1:15:35I'm sure it's great.
- 1:15:36Jon: That's tough.
- 1:15:37She won.
- 1:15:38She ends up winning probably because of who she is.
- 1:15:44You know, Marley, Maitland,
- 1:15:45Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:15:47Jon: and, you know, deaf, uh, it feels like one of those
- 1:15:50that the Academy Awards really
- 1:15:53Kearns: They had
- 1:15:54Jon: would always fall for.
- 1:15:55They, they'll always fall for that.
- 1:15:57Kearns: You know what?
- 1:15:58I saw her in by the way, first was, um, that stupid movie, the Secret or whatever?
- 1:16:03No.
- 1:16:03Uh, what the bleep do we know?
- 1:16:06And she plays the character in it the whole time.
- 1:16:08And she's, you know, deaf.
- 1:16:11she sounds the way she does in it and all that.
- 1:16:13And it adds like a layer to that movie, which is filled with scientific lies.
- 1:16:18It's, uh, any who?
- 1:16:21Jon: Anyhow,
- 1:16:22Kearns: Sigourney.
- 1:16:23Jon: top five.
- 1:16:23Kearns: All right.
- 1:16:24That was a good top five.
- 1:16:25Both of you guys.
- 1:16:26Ryan: Oh, thank
- 1:16:26Kearns: All.
- 1:16:27Alright gentlemen, well, I guess that's gonna be us wrapping up sinners.
- 1:16:32Ryan: Go.
- 1:16:32Sin
- 1:16:33Jon: baby.
- 1:16:34Ryan: Go sin and have a good night.
