Transcript
- 0:00We are back to the book of Jeremiah and we are on chapter
- 0:0333 today. And the reason why we read
- 0:06Scripture is because all scripture is God breathed and is
- 0:10useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in
- 0:14righteousness so that the servant of God may be thoroughly
- 0:17equipped for every good work. That's found in Second Timothy
- 0:21chapter 3, verses 16 and 17. The other reason that's
- 0:25important to read the Word every day is that, as Romans 10/17
- 0:30says, consequently, faith comes from hearing the message and the
- 0:34message is heard through the Word about Christ.
- 0:38Now not every day that we do this do we talk about Christ
- 0:41because we are in books that were written in the BC era and
- 0:46this is an exception. Jesus is mentioned in this.
- 0:50There is a future prophecy about Jesus that is in this chapter.
- 0:54So let's get started. Dear Lord please be with us as
- 0:58we read through this chapter. Please open eyes and ears to
- 1:03hear what you have to say. We ask this in Jesus name.
- 1:07So this is called the promise of restoration.
- 1:11While Jeremiah was still confined in the courtyard of the
- 1:15guard, the word of the Lord came to him a second time.
- 1:20So Jeremiah is hearing from the Lord fairly regularly, it seems.
- 1:27This is what the Lord says. He who made the earth, the Lord
- 1:32who formed it and established it.
- 1:35The Lord is his name call to me and I will answer you and tell
- 1:41you great and unsearchable things you do not know.
- 1:45Isn't that interesting? I want to stop for a minute on
- 1:48that. And you know, is this something
- 1:52that God is speaking to, you know, exclusively saying this to
- 1:57Jeremiah? He is certainly is.
- 1:59I mean, he's giving the word to Jeremiah.
- 2:01But sometimes when God speaks to people, he says truths that are
- 2:07applicable to everyone. And I wonder about this, like if
- 2:11we call on God, it's, you know, this is what he he said to
- 2:17Jeremiah. He said, I will answer you and
- 2:19tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.
- 2:24I find it very interesting. And I do want to share a little
- 2:27bit of a personal experience that I had in my early moments
- 2:33of seeking God. It was after I read the Bible,
- 2:38actually, it was this all started like the night of my
- 2:41baptism and I started having dreams and I started having
- 2:46dreams with the name of Jesus in my dreams.
- 2:49I was not a religious person at all before I read the Bible and
- 2:56I wouldn't even call myself religious now.
- 2:58I would say that I have a passion for Christ and I'm
- 3:05getting to know God over time through scripture and learning
- 3:10more and more each day. But as far as you know, someone
- 3:14who you know be would be recognized as somebody highly
- 3:17involved in a church or anything.
- 3:19I'm not that and I'm I'm not that.
- 3:23This is personal to me. And so anyway, what happened on
- 3:30my, you know, about these dreams?
- 3:32That's, I guess that's why I wanted to mention those things
- 3:35because the dreams that I started having with Jesus in it
- 3:38are not something that I you because I do these podcasts.
- 3:42People may think I'm really religious, but I'm not.
- 3:45I'm just seeking God. I'm just a normal regular person
- 3:49that wanted to know what's in the Bible because it it
- 3:55concerned me that I didn't know what was in here and that there
- 3:58was important information. And, and I was right about that.
- 4:01Maybe God was, you know, inspiring me to you better read
- 4:07the Bible because there's things in there that are really
- 4:09important for you. But what for whatever reason, I
- 4:14did actually pick up the Bible and read it in a relatively
- 4:16quick time frame. It was in 2019 from August
- 4:21through October, I read the entire Bible and I spent like
- 4:25every waking moment listening to it or reading it or something.
- 4:29So, and I also was doing a lot of driving at that time.
- 4:33So I would listen to all as I was driving and that enabled me
- 4:36to get through it so quickly. But I did it kind of like fast.
- 4:40I just wanted to get through it as quickly as possible so I
- 4:43could understand what was covered in it.
- 4:46But in these dreams, besides the name of Jesus, there were things
- 4:51that would happen in my dreams that then would happen in my
- 4:56real life. Only a scene of something, not
- 5:00the whole entire dream, but just like a segment or something I
- 5:03would see in my dream. And, and there were also
- 5:06scriptures that would come up in my dreams.
- 5:09And there were also details about certain events that are in
- 5:14the Bible that would come up in in my dreams.
- 5:17And I didn't really know those things.
- 5:20So when I it would happen in my dream, then I would start
- 5:24searching the Bible for it and then I would find it in the
- 5:26Bible. And I was like, wow, that was in
- 5:28my dream. So that's why I paused on this
- 5:33statement. And I wonder if this is true
- 5:36because I was really seeking the Lord.
- 5:37I still AM. And it says here that you know
- 5:41that he's talking to Jeremiah, though.
- 5:43Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and
- 5:48unsearchable things you do not know.
- 5:52So I, I do believe that when we are truly seeking God that
- 5:57things like this will come up. We don't know what they are or
- 6:01when they will come up, but in my experience, I've had it.
- 6:06So I encourage people to seek God because he, if he did it for
- 6:13me, he could do it for anyone. And we see historically that he
- 6:20did it for Jeremiah and there's others too.
- 6:23So anyway, I'll get back to Scripture now, for this is what
- 6:26the Lord the God of Israel says about the houses in the city and
- 6:30the royal palaces of Judah that have been torn down to be used
- 6:33again, the siege to be used against the siege ramps and the
- 6:39sword in the fight with the Babylonians.
- 6:42They will be filled with dead bodies of the people I will slay
- 6:46in my anger and wrath. I will hide my face from the
- 6:50city because of all its wickedness.
- 6:54This is a terrible judgement. Can you imagine being Jeremiah
- 7:01and hearing this about your community, about your city that
- 7:04you live in, and hearing what God has planned?
- 7:07I mean, he already told them that if they stayed in the city
- 7:10they were going to, they were they would die there by various
- 7:15means. But if they went to Babylon and
- 7:17they were, you know, basically peacefully surrendered and go,
- 7:20not surrendered, but peacefully go with them, they would be OK.
- 7:25They would keep their lives. So this would be a huge weight
- 7:29to bear and to hear this from God.
- 7:33And he knows, he knows God. So he knows that if God says
- 7:36something, it's going to happen. It continues what the Lord said.
- 7:41Nevertheless, I will bring health and healing to it.
- 7:45I will heal my people and I will let them enjoy abundant peace
- 7:50and security. I will bring Judah and Israel
- 7:55back from captivity and will rebuild them as they were
- 8:00before. I will cleanse them from all the
- 8:05sin they have committed against me and will forgive all their
- 8:10sins of rebellion against me. Look at how merciful God is.
- 8:15Like God's like this is going to happen.
- 8:18It's going to be bad, but there's going to be a
- 8:21restoration. And you know, this is, you know,
- 8:27there is, I think judgment really is it's not, you know, a
- 8:34a temporary moment where God is angry with somebody, so he's
- 8:36going to act out against it. No, it's a consequence of sin
- 8:42because it says like the wages of sin is death.
- 8:47So judgment or hard times or tribulation or troubles or
- 8:55whatever you call it that from God is there's a purpose behind
- 9:01it. And the purpose is to get people
- 9:05to repent, to turn back to God when the pressure comes up.
- 9:09A lot of people come to God when they're at their lowest points
- 9:12in life. And anyway, God is, you know, I,
- 9:17I don't, I don't believe that this comes from a place that we
- 9:23can relate to as far as if somebody makes us angry, it's
- 9:28not just to vent his frustration.
- 9:31It's because God is just and he has laws that are established.
- 9:35And when people break those laws and he keeps warning them and
- 9:38they don't listen, eventually there's a consequence for sin.
- 9:42And that's going to come upon every single person on this
- 9:45earth is that we are going to have a consequence for the sins
- 9:49that we've done, the rebellion that we've done.
- 9:52God is very merciful, and He relents with his punishment
- 9:56historically when people turn to him in repentance and then
- 10:01choose not to do it again. But we all need the help of the
- 10:06Holy Spirit to make progress like that.
- 10:10Anyway, going back as to the scripture, God is showing his
- 10:15mercy here. He's he's saying, you know, this
- 10:17is going to this going to be a tough time, but there's
- 10:19something better to come. Like he's giving that hope at
- 10:23the same time that he's delivering this information
- 10:27about what judgments going to come upon.
- 10:30So at verse 9, then this city will bring me renown, joy,
- 10:34praise and honor before all the nations on earth that hear of
- 10:40the good things I do for it. And they will be in awe and will
- 10:46tremble at the abundant prosperity and peace I provide
- 10:52for it. Now, right now in the world,
- 10:55people are hoping for this. There's been a lot of war, a lot
- 10:59of fighting, and there is a big push for expanded peace,
- 11:05expanded security due to it. But this is false peace that
- 11:12will come because Jesus said that wars and rumors of wars
- 11:17will continue until the end, the end of the age, and until he
- 11:21returns. We are not going to have true
- 11:24peace until the Messiah, until Jesus returns once again.
- 11:30And as we read further, we will see that this peace and
- 11:36security, this peace and prosperity, abundant prosperity
- 11:39and peace is not for it. You know it.
- 11:44There are things that are talked about in this chapter that did
- 11:46not have not happened to Israel yet.
- 11:49So this is still a future prophecy that remains
- 11:52unfulfilled. And we know that when Jesus
- 11:56comes back, that's when it's going to happen.
- 11:58Other prophets talk about animals lying down next to one
- 12:02another like they're seem like they're no longer predators and
- 12:07the lion and the lamb together. So and, and in more animals that
- 12:13are talked about that are in peace and are not dangerous
- 12:16anymore. So there's I can't wait till
- 12:19that time when Jesus restores things to that level.
- 12:24Let's go to verse 10. This is what the Lord says, you
- 12:27say about this place. It is a desolate waste without
- 12:31people or animals. Yet in the towns of Judah and
- 12:34the streets of Jerusalem that are deserted, inhabited by
- 12:38neither people nor animals, there will be heard once more
- 12:43the sounds of joy and gladness, the voices of bride and
- 12:48bridegroom, and the voices of those who bring thank offerings
- 12:54to the House of the Lord, saying, Give thanks to the Lord
- 12:57Almighty, for the Lord is good, His love endures forever, for I
- 13:05will restore the fortunes of the land as they were before, says
- 13:10the Lord. This is what the Lord Almighty
- 13:13says. In this place, desolate and
- 13:15without people or animals in all its towns, there will again be
- 13:20pastures for shepherds to rest their flocks.
- 13:23In the towns of the Hill Country of the western foothills and in
- 13:27the Negev, in the territory of Benjamin, in the villages around
- 13:32Jerusalem and in the towns of Judah, flock will again pass
- 13:36under the hand of the one who counts them, says the Lord.
- 13:41The days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will fulfill
- 13:46the good promise I made to the people of Israel and Judah.
- 13:51I believe this is Jesus's return in those days, and at that time
- 13:57I will make a righteous branch sprout from David's line.
- 14:03Jesus is a descendant of David's line, and he's from the tribe of
- 14:07Judah. And there's a whole ancestry
- 14:10that is in the Gospels that shows how Jesus descended from
- 14:14the tribe of Judah, which is where David came from.
- 14:19So he will do what is just and right in the land in those days.
- 14:25Judah will be saved. So see, until this righteous
- 14:29branch from David's line does what is just and right in the
- 14:34land in those days, Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will
- 14:39lived in safety. So see this doesn't happen until
- 14:43the righteous branch or Jesus comes.
- 14:47This is the name by which he will be called the Lord, our
- 14:53righteous Savior. Who does that define Jesus?
- 14:58And and because like Savior, like first of all, the Lord, I
- 15:03mean, this is our, you know, giving him those the godly
- 15:08attribute, the Lord, our righteous Savior.
- 15:12So what is he saving people from eternal damnation.
- 15:18He saved everyone by his death and resurrection on the cross.
- 15:23He defeated death at that point because he rose again by the
- 15:29power of the Holy Spirit, and he is living today.
- 15:34He is living right now. He is living in the heavenly
- 15:37realms currently. But he will return because
- 15:39that's what prophecy says, that he will come back someday and he
- 15:44will reign from Jerusalem as king.
- 15:47Israel will once again have a king, in fact, the whole world.
- 15:50He will rule the entire world when he comes back.
- 15:54There's going to be justice for everything, like there's going
- 15:58to be the wrath of God is going to come when he returns.
- 16:02But those who are prepared, who are not in rebellion to Jesus
- 16:07will be very thankful when Jesus comes because he will gather
- 16:11those people. Now I'll continue on at verse 12
- 16:15or 17, for this is what the Lord says.
- 16:18David will never fail to have a man to sit on the throne of
- 16:23Israel, nor will the Levitical priests ever fail to have a man
- 16:28to stand before me, continually to offer burnt offerings, to
- 16:34burn grain offerings, and to present sacrifices.
- 16:39The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah.
- 16:41This is what the Lord says. If you can break my covenant
- 16:46with the day and my covenant with the night so that the day
- 16:51and the night no longer come at their appointed time, then my
- 16:57covenant with David and my servant with the covenant with
- 17:02David my servant and my covenant with the Levites who are the
- 17:07priest ministering before me, can be broken and David will no
- 17:12longer have a descendant to reign on his throne.
- 17:16I will make the descendants of David my servant and the Levites
- 17:20who minister before me as countless as the stars in the
- 17:24sky and as measureless as the sand on the seashore.
- 17:31So unless, you know, the sun doesn't rise and the night
- 17:35doesn't happen as long as there's day and night, then this
- 17:40covenant remains. The covenant God has remains.
- 17:45The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah.
- 17:47Have you not noticed that these people are saying the Lord has
- 17:51rejected the two kingdoms he chose?
- 17:55I'm presuming that they're talking about the northern
- 17:58Kingdom called Israel, which was 10 tribes, and the southern
- 18:03Kingdom called Judah which were two tribes.
- 18:07So they despise my people and no longer regard them as a nation.
- 18:12The Jews are always have people that don't like them even today.
- 18:18I mean look at the anti-Semitism that's rising among so many
- 18:24people, so many countries. I mean, this is just you know
- 18:31and you know, this is this is what the Bible says is going to
- 18:34happen. God has to correct all of this.
- 18:36This is what the Lord says. If I have not made my covenant
- 18:41with the day and the night, established the laws of heaven
- 18:43and earth, then I will reject the descendants of Jacob and
- 18:48David my servant, and will not choose one of his sons to rule
- 18:51over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
- 18:55So again, he, the Lord is reaffirming who this promise is
- 18:59with and it's Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
- 19:04So he gives that this covenant and of course, God made the
- 19:10laws. He established the laws and he
- 19:12created day and night. So he's kind of just saying, you
- 19:16know, this is how it's going to be.
- 19:18This is not going to go away. My covenant is solid.
- 19:22And he says for I will restore their fortunes and have
- 19:26compassion on them. And that's the end of chapter
- 19:3134. So I'm going to read the
- 19:32questions and answers for this chapter and then wrap it up.
- 19:36What was behind this amplified description of God?
- 19:38The pronouncements that were to follow were weighty and serious,
- 19:42and the Lord underscored their accuracy and dependability by
- 19:47attaching His name to them. What was about to be declared
- 19:50would come about, for the Creator and Sustainer of all
- 19:53things had signed His name to it.
- 19:57How did shepherds count their flocks under the hand shepherds
- 20:00in this geographic region took? Stood at the entrance of
- 20:05whatever temporary fold they created to protect their sheep
- 20:10for the night and counted their sheep as they entered.
- 20:13The sheep entered into the fold by passing under the shepherd's
- 20:18rod or hand, which made it possible to count them at night.
- 20:23This was done for two reasons. Number one, to account for all
- 20:26the sheep and #2 to ensure that no predators entered the fold.
- 20:34What kind of safety was offered to the city of Jerusalem?
- 20:37This promise, like others in Jeremiah, came with conditions.
- 20:41It was offered to those who would allow the righteous branch
- 20:46to rule over them. This was a prophecy of a future
- 20:52Messiah whose Kingdom would not be of this earth.
- 20:56He would offer spiritual safety to all those who whose hearts
- 21:02belonged to Him. Why call a city the Lord, our
- 21:07righteous say Savior? In Jeremiah's culture, names
- 21:12were used to describe the characteristics of a person, not
- 21:15just to label or identify a person.
- 21:18The prophecy tells us of a time when a righteous Jerusalem will
- 21:22honor the name of the Lord by mirroring his characteristics.
- 21:30How could there be a countless number of ministering Levites?
- 21:36The Old Testament priesthood called for priests to stand as
- 21:40intermediaries between God and the people.
- 21:42But the New Testament introduced a new priesthood, one in which
- 21:47believers are priests. That's found in First Peter
- 21:51chapter 2, verse 9. Every believer may directly
- 21:55enter the presence of God because Jesus, the great high
- 21:59Priest found in Hebrews chapter 4, verses 14 through 16, has
- 22:05opened the way believers enjoy a better priesthood than that
- 22:10known by the Old Testament priest.
- 22:13For believers can enjoy an intimate and personal
- 22:16relationship with God. And that concludes Chapter 33.
