- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Spanish with Fexingo. We are at episode two fifty. That is a big milestone. Luna: I know. I feel like we have been doing this forever. But in a good way. Lucas: It has been wonderful. And if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with this language, your support keeps it ad-free. You can help by going to buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. It really helps us keep making these small steps together. Luna: Thanks for that. Okay, let's get back to the kitchen. Last time we poured and baked. Today feels different. Lucas: It does. We are moving from the oven to the prep work. Specifically, getting ingredients ready before they hit the heat. Let's start with something very common. Cheese. Luna: Cheese. Like parmesan on pasta? Lucas: Exactly. To grate cheese, we say rallar el queso. Rallar el queso. Slowly. Rallar el queso. Luna: Rallar el queso. Okay. Rallar... el queso. Lucas: Perfect. Just remember the double L sound. Like a light 'y'. Rallar el queso. Try it again. Luna: Rallar el queso. Got it. So if I am making spaghetti, I need to do this first. Lucas: Yes. You grate the cheese while the water boils. Now, what comes after you grate it? Usually, you put it in a bowl and mix things up. Luna: Mix? Like stir? Lucas: Sometimes. But if you are making bread or dumplings, you are working with dough. In Spanish, dough is masa. To mix the dough, we say mezclar la masa. Mezclar la masa. Luna: Mezclar la masa. Hmm. Mezclar... la masa. Lucas: Good. Notice the 'c' in mezclar sounds like an 's'. Mezclar la masa. Repeat it for me. Luna: Mezclar la masa. Okay. I can see it now. Flour, water, mix. Lucas: Exactly. And usually, when you make dough, you want some flavor. Fresh herbs are great for that. Luna: Herbs. Basil? Parsley? Lucas: Yes. Herbs is hierbas. To chop them finely, we use picar. So, picar las hierbas. Picar las hierbas. Luna: Picar las hierbas. Oof. That tongue twister is tricky. Pica-r las hi e rras. Lucas: Take your time. Picar las hierbas. Break it down. Picar... las... hierbas. Luna: Picar las hierbas. There we go. I think I got the rhythm. Lucas: You did. Now, finally, we need protein. Meat goes into the pan. Luna: To fry it? Lucas: Yes. To fry meat. Meat is carne. To fry is freír. So, freír la carne. Freír la carne. Luna: Freír la carne. Wait, the accent mark. On the i. Freír la carne. Lucas: Right. The accent tells us where the stress goes. Freír la carne. Say it with me. Luna: Freír la carne. Freír la carne. Okay, I feel confident about that one. Lucas: Let's put it all together. Imagine you are making a big meal. First, you grate the cheese. Luna: Rallar el queso. Lucas: Then you mix the dough for the bread. Luna: Mezclar la masa. Lucas: Then you chop the fresh herbs for garnish. Luna: Picar las hierbas. Lucas: And finally, you cook the meat in the skillet. Luna: Freír la carne. Lucas: Beautiful. You handled those perfectly. Remember, cooking is just a series of small actions. Rallar el queso. It is simple once you break it down. Luna: It really is. I used to be scared of the kitchen in Spanish. Now it just feels like a checklist. Lucas: That is the goal. A manageable checklist. Practice these four phrases today. Rallar el queso, mezclar la masa, picar las hierbas, freír la carne. Say them while you cook, even if it is just toast. Luna: I will try. Thanks, Lucas. This was a nice break from the directions. Lucas: Anytime. See you next time for more small steps. Practice these till we chat again.
