- 0:00Welcome back to Fostering Faith. I am going to
- 0:03Be your host today, Tracie, and we are in a season
- 0:06of Thanksgiving. So we're going to get a little
- 0:09break from our fruits of the spirit, and we are
- 0:12going to jump into a podcast about Thanksgiving
- 0:16and gratitude, since this is dropping on Thanksgiving
- 0:19morning. Happy Thanksgiving from us to you. And
- 0:22If you are new to Fostering Faith, we are a podcast.
- 0:25where we don't have it all figured out, but we
- 0:27We are walking in this faith journey together. And
- 0:29If you are a turn listener, welcome back home.
- 0:31And we are going to be talking about Thanksgiving
- 0:35moment today. And so I want you to settle in.
- 0:38for a little while, not just kind of a few minutes.
- 0:41I think it's going to be a longer episode, just
- 0:43because there's so much to talk about, because
- 0:46It's not going to be just like a quick encouragement
- 0:48or a little devotional. This is a message and
- 0:51It's a journey. It's a slow walk through the
- 0:54places that we forget to visit. It's a conversation.
- 0:56that your heart is probably long overdue for.
- 1:00It's a kind of truth that doesn't just touch
- 1:02the surface. It gets inside of you, rearranges
- 1:05things, resets things, restores things, and reminds
- 1:09You who God is all over again. And today we're
- 1:13going to be talking about gratitude and not the
- 1:16A shallow version of it, not the quote, says something
- 1:19nice around the table. I'm talking about gratitude.
- 1:23the way that the Bible describes it. Gratitude
- 1:25the way that the Holy Spirit awakens it. Gratitude
- 1:29that grows in the soil of suffering. Gratitude
- 1:32that is born in the middle of uncertainty. Gratitude
- 1:35That is not natural, but supernatural. So some
- 1:39of you listeners today are tired. Not physically
- 1:42tired, but soul tired. Like tired in your bones.
- 1:46Tired in your mind. Tired of your emotions. tired
- 1:50in your spirit, and you've been carrying weights
- 1:53that no one sees, and honestly, you don't even
- 1:57know how much you're going to be carrying anymore
- 2:00because it's been that heavy for that long and
- 2:04gratitude feels like something far away, something
- 2:06for people in a better season, something for those
- 2:10people who have what looks to be an easier life
- 2:12But I want to tell you something fundamentally
- 2:15something biblically, something that breaks shame
- 2:18off your shoulders. Your lack of gratitude
- 2:21Right now does not mean that you're weak. It
- 2:24means that you are weary. And Jesus always moved.
- 2:27towards the weary. In Matthew 11:28 to 29, it
- 2:31says, Jesus has come to me, all that are weary
- 2:34and burdened, and I will give you rest. The weary
- 2:37They are the first invited. The burdened are the invested.
- 2:42first. The ones who can't fake it anymore are
- 2:46invited first. Jesus never said, Come to me whenever
- 2:50You have it all together. He said, Come to me.
- 2:53whenever you're at the end of your rope. Gratitude
- 2:56doesn't begin whenever you feel good. Gratitude
- 2:59begins when the Holy Spirit revives what life
- 3:03has been suffocating. And I want you to take
- 3:06this into scripture because gratitude is not
- 3:08just a good idea. It's a biblical theme woven.
- 3:11into the whole... the whole story of God.
- 3:15In Deuteronomy 8, God warns Israel that when life
- 3:19gets good, don't forget me. He literally says
- 3:22In verse two, you shall remember all the way
- 3:25which the Lord your God has led you. Remember,
- 3:30not guess, not assume, but remember. But why?
- 3:35Because humans forget the faithfulness of God
- 3:37faster than anything else. We forget the miracles.
- 3:40once. We're out of that danger. We forget the
- 3:44Prayers God answered once in the crisis that
- 3:46has passed. We forget the strength that He's
- 3:48given to us when we're in the breaking. We forget
- 3:52The comfort He sent at two a.m. when the world
- 3:54was silent. We forget the doors that He opened.
- 3:56and the ones that He protected us from walking
- 3:59through. And forgetting kills gratitude. But
- 4:03The Holy Spirit says, Remember, Jesus says in
- 4:08John 14:26 says, The Holy Spirit will teach
- 4:12You remember all things and bring you into remembrance
- 4:16all that I said to you. Gratitude begins when
- 4:20The Holy Spirit restores the memory of God, who
- 4:23is. So let me slow down. Some of you aren't even.
- 4:27able to feel grateful because your heart has
- 4:30been flooded with other things. Disappointment,
- 4:34exhaustion, fear, anxiety, comparison, confusion,
- 4:39and grief. These things clog your Holy Spirit.
- 4:41arteries faster than a cheeto. They crowd up
- 4:46clarity. They suffocate vision. They distort
- 4:50Reality until all you can see is what's wrong
- 4:53and what's missing. What hasn't changed? What
- 4:57You lost, and what you wish you could have fixed
- 5:00but can't. But then the Holy Spirit comes into
- 5:03that space. He doesn't want to shame you. He
- 5:05doesn't want to push you. But he says, be grateful.
- 5:09He gently removes the fog, revealing the truth.
- 5:13God has been faithful every single minute, even
- 5:17when you couldn't feel it. If we look at the Psalms,
- 5:20I'm reading, studying Psalms now, and so if we
- 5:24Read Psalms 103, it says, Bless the Lord, oh
- 5:26My soul, and I forget none of his benefits. David
- 5:31He is literally preaching to himself. He didn't
- 5:34say, feel grateful. He said, Remember. And gratitude
- 5:39is remembering with revelation. Gratitude is
- 5:43not pretending everything is fine. It's recognizing
- 5:46God was faithful even when everything was not
- 5:49fine. So let's talk about the Holy Spirit more.
- 5:52deeply because people may not understand or connect
- 5:55the Spirit and how it's gratitude. And so in
- 6:00Galatians 5, Paul lists the fruits of the Spirit,
- 6:02which we've been walking through for the last
- 6:03A couple of weeks. And so we have love, joy, peace,
- 6:06patience, kindness. And those are all the fruits.
- 6:09grown together. Do you know what the combination is?
- 6:13What flavors would probably taste like? Gratitude.
- 6:17A grateful heart is not a natural fruit. It's
- 6:20a supernatural fruit. This fruit, the spirit
- 6:23produces that kind of gratitude that cannot be
- 6:25manufactured. Gratitude that raises a storm.
- 6:30A gratitude that survives a heartache. A gratitude
- 6:34that grows in tears. A gratitude that can say
- 6:39like David in Psalm 27:13, I would have despaired
- 6:43unless I believed that I would see
- 6:46The goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
- 6:49That's gratitude rooted in faith and not feelings.
- 6:54I want you to take Lamentations 3, one of the
- 6:57darkest books of the Bible. Jerusalem is destroyed,
- 7:01The people are crushed, and the prophet Jeremiah
- 7:04is grieving so deeply that he can barely speak
- 7:07And right in the middle of the sorrow, he says
- 7:11These words you have heard, but maybe not
- 7:15Understood the context, it says this, I recall
- 7:19To my mind, therefore, I have hope the lord's loving
- 7:23Kindness indeed never ceases for his love and compassion
- 7:28never fail, they are new every morning. This I
- 7:35recall to my mind, not this I feel, not this
- 7:39I see, not this I'm in the mood for, but I recall,
- 7:45I remember, I bring it back into my mind, even
- 7:50when everything feels broken. And Jeremiah teaches
- 7:54Give us something powerful. Gratitude is not a mood.
- 7:56Gratitude is a memory, healed by the Holy Spirit.
- 8:00And let's talk about Jesus. Jesus modeled gratitude
- 8:03in every season, even the most painful ones.
- 8:07In Matthew 14:19, before multiplying the fish
- 8:10In the loaves, Jesus looked up and gave thanks.
- 8:14Gratitude came before the miracle. In John 11,
- 8:1841, standing at Lazarus' tomb, Jesus said, Father,
- 8:22I thank you for hearing me. Gratitude
- 8:26came before the resurrection. And in Luke 22:19,
- 8:31On the night that he was betrayed, Jesus gave
- 8:35thanks. Before breaking the bread and representing
- 8:39His own suffering, gratitude came before the
- 8:43cross. Why? Because gratitude is not rooted in
- 8:47the moment. It's rooted in the relationship.
- 8:50And that's what the Holy Spirit wants to create
- 8:53inside of you. A gratitude that isn't tied to
- 8:56circumstances, but tied to Christ. Some of you
- 8:59are listening today, and you feel grateful
- 9:01has been stolen. The enemy has used disappointment,
- 9:05confusion, or exhaustion, to drain your joy. He
- 9:09used a comparison to distract you. He's used anxiety.
- 9:12to suffocate your hope. He's used busyness to
- 9:16numb your spirit. But the Bible says in John.
- 9:1910, 10, the thief comes only to seek to kill.
- 9:23and destroy. I came that I may give life. Gratitude
- 9:28is life. Gratitude is spiritual oxygen. Gratitude
- 9:33is revival. And so let's talk about spiritual.
- 9:37warfare inside gratitude. Gratitude shuts the
- 9:39door on bitterness. Gratitude, silence, and complaining.
- 9:43Gratitude breaks comparison. And gratitude uproots
- 9:46jealousy. Gratitude destroys fear. And gratitude
- 9:51strengthens faith. Gratitude is one of the enemy's
- 9:55least discussed nightmares because grateful believers
- 9:59They are impossible to control. A grateful believer
- 10:02can walk through fire and still say, My God is
- 10:07good. A grateful believer can stand in the valley.
- 10:10and still declare, surely goodness and mercy
- 10:13will follow me. A grateful believer can endure.
- 10:17trials and still proclaim, God works all things
- 10:20out for good. Gratitude is not weakness. Gratitude
- 10:25is warfare. Now let's talk about you. Let's talk
- 10:30about your story. Because no matter what, this
- 10:34What the year looked like, you're still standing today
- 10:37with breath in your lungs because God sustained
- 10:41you. You've been carried more than you know,
- 10:45protected more than you noticed, strengthened
- 10:47more than you realized. And Psalm 46 says,
- 10:51God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in time of need
- 10:55help in trouble. Not past help, not occasional
- 10:59help, but present help. Help right now. Instead
- 11:03If you survive nights that felt impossible, you
- 11:06walk through emotional pain that didn't destroy
- 11:09you, and you face fears that didn't take you
- 11:12out. You made it through the days that felt like
- 11:14It was so much. You didn't survive it because
- 11:18You're strong. You survived it because God is
- 11:21faithful. Gratitude begins when the Holy Spirit.
- 11:25helps you see how many times God has held you
- 11:28together. In Psalm 34, David says, I sought
- 11:32The Lord and he answered me and delivered me
- 11:35for all my fears. Gratitude is remembering deliverance.
- 11:40Gratitude is remembering how God reached into
- 11:43your anxiety and didn't let you swallow the whole
- 11:46you. Gratitude is remembering that even when
- 11:51You are faithless; God is faithful. And gratitude
- 11:56is remembering that His mercies didn't run out,
- 12:00not even on your worst day. Now, I want to talk.
- 12:05to you and want you to think about the disciples.
- 12:09After Jesus rose again, they were hiding in fear.
- 12:13Their gratitude was gone. Their hope was gone.
- 12:16Their boldness was gone. There I will never deny
- 12:19You were gone. Everything Jesus taught them felt.
- 12:24distant. But in John 22, Jesus breathed on them.
- 12:30and said, Receive the Holy Spirit. The breath
- 12:34That changed everything. Gratitude returned.
- 12:38Courage returned. Hope returned. Vision returned.
- 12:41And this is what the Spirit still does. He breathes
- 12:45on what feels dead on the inside. I want you
- 12:48to take that into Psalm 136, a chapter where
- 12:51Every single verse ends with his loving kindness
- 12:54is everlasting. 46 verses, 46 reminders. Why?
- 13:02Because human hearts forget, but the Spirit reminds
- 13:06and then gratitude returns. And so, how do we
- 13:10Experience this kind of gratitude today? By inviting
- 13:13the Holy Spirit into the places where our lives
- 13:15has been the loudest. By letting Him soften what
- 13:18has been hardened. By letting Him open what has
- 13:21been closed. And by letting Him untangle what
- 13:24Stress has been knotted. By letting Him speak
- 13:27Truth louder than your fears. By letting Him
- 13:30restore the memories of God's faithfulness. Gratitude
- 13:35It is not something that you can form. Gratitude
- 13:38is something that you receive. And so, how do
- 13:44We put this into context? And so here's what
- 13:48I want you to think about the next, because gratitude
- 13:50It isn't only about God, what he has done behind
- 13:53you. Gratitude is also about what God is doing
- 13:56within you right now. The Holy Spirit isn't just.
- 13:59The one who reminds you of yesterday. He's the
- 14:02One shaping you today. In Ezekiel 36 26 through
- 14:0827, God promises, I will give you a new heart
- 14:13and put a new spirit within you. I will put my
- 14:15spirit within you. Gratitude is a sign that God.
- 14:19is making you a new heart. A grateful heart is
- 14:22evidence that the spirit hasn't just touched
- 14:25you. He's transforming you. The transformation
- 14:28doesn't just happen in pretty places. Transformation
- 14:32happens in pressure, the pruning, the stretching,
- 14:36the confusion. The moments where you say, God,
- 14:39I don't understand what you're doing. It happens
- 14:42in the rooms where the old visions of you are
- 14:45dying and the new version is being born. Gratitude
- 14:49doesn't wait for the pain to end. Gratitude grows
- 14:53in the pain because the Holy Spirit is present
- 14:56in the pain. And Psalm 3418 doesn't say God avoids
- 15:01the brokenhearted. It says that He is near to
- 15:04them. Gratitude comes from recognizing his nearness.
- 15:07and not pretending that life is painless. Think
- 15:12about Joseph, thrown into the pit, sold as a
- 15:16slave, wrongfully imprisoned, forgotten by the
- 15:19people that he helped. And yet, at the end of
- 15:21His life, in Genesis 50 -20, he says, you meant
- 15:25evil against me, but God meant it for good. That
- 15:31Spirit breathed gratitude. Not thanking God for
- 15:34the betrayal, but thanking God for his sovereignty
- 15:37through it. Gratitude does not deny the evil.
- 15:41is done, it magnifies the God who overrules it.
- 15:46Think about David, chased by Saul, hiding in
- 15:48a cave, betrayed by friends, dealing with his
- 15:51own failures, and yet he writes in Psalm 13:6,
- 15:54I will sing to the Lord because he has dealt
- 15:57with me bountifully within me. How can a man
- 16:00hunted and brokenhearted say because of gratitude
- 16:04Looks up and not around? Gratitude is not a mood.
- 16:08Gratitude is not a posture, and some of you need
- 16:12a posture shift. You've been bracing yourself.
- 16:14defending yourself, holding yourself together
- 16:17surviving, but the Holy Spirit is inviting you
- 16:20Today, exhale to release, to let him hold you
- 16:26and to let him soften the places that have been
- 16:28hardened out of necessity, to let him bring warmth
- 16:32back into the places that have gone cold. Gratitude
- 16:35doesn't rise in clenched hearts, it rises in
- 16:39surrendered ones. Look in Philippians 4, 6, or
- 16:427, a passage where we often quote, but rarely
- 16:45feel. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything.
- 16:49by prayer and supplication, by thanksgiving,
- 16:52let requests be known to God, and the peace of
- 16:54God will guard your hearts and your minds in
- 16:56Jesus Christ. Notice that Thanksgiving is not
- 17:00The response after peace. Thanksgiving is the
- 17:04doorway into peace. Gratitude isn't something.
- 17:08that you do once you feel better. Gratitude is
- 17:12What ushers in the peace that makes you better?
- 17:16Gratitude is warfare. Gratitude is weaponry.
- 17:19Gratitude is armor. And some of you have been
- 17:22fighting spiritual battles unarmed. You're fighting
- 17:26with fear instead of faith. You're fighting with
- 17:28self-protection instead of surrender. You've
- 17:31been fighting with exhaustion instead of endurance.
- 17:35But gratitude, true gratitude, is how you pick
- 17:38Put your head up. It's how you lift your eyes again.
- 17:41And it's how you shift from, I'm drowning, to
- 17:44God is carrying me. Thanksgiving doesn't remove
- 17:49the storm. But just like Jesus calmed the waves
- 17:52In Mark 4, gratitude makes you aware that He
- 17:55is in the boat with you. And while we're talking
- 17:58about Jesus chasing calming storms, I want to
- 18:01remind you of something. Before He ever rebuked
- 18:03The wind, He rebuked the disciples for their
- 18:07fear. Why? Because fear blinds. Fear forgets.
- 18:14Fear replaces the truth with imagination. But
- 18:17Gratitude anchors you in reality. Not the reality
- 18:21You see, but the reality that God sees. And some
- 18:24of you today, the Holy Spirit wants to take you
- 18:26by the chin and lift up your head and say, Look
- 18:30Again, look again at your marriage. You thought
- 18:33It was dead. He's still working. Look again at
- 18:36that child that you thought was too far gone.
- 18:39He's still calling. Look again at that place.
- 18:42that you felt abandoned. He was closer than you
- 18:46breath. Look again at the seasons that you thought.
- 18:48It was a waste. God was forming strength and endurance
- 18:53humility and wisdom Romans 5 3 through 5 says
- 18:58we exalt in tribulation because tribulation produces
- 19:01perseverance Character and hope and the hope
- 19:04is not disappoint because the love of God has
- 19:06been poured out through the Holy Spirit Gratitude
- 19:09grows when you begin to see pain through the
- 19:13lenses of purpose And then let me take you into
- 19:17one of the most beautiful scriptures of gratitude
- 19:19Psalm 42 5 where David says why are you in despair?
- 19:24Oh my soul Why do you become disturbed within
- 19:28me? Hoping God for I shall again praise him God
- 19:34David is talking about his soul. He's saying
- 19:36I don't I know that you're discouraged, but this
- 19:40isn't the end of our story Gratitude is the soul
- 19:43remembering its future gratitude says God is
- 19:47not finished And some of you need to hear that
- 19:49today. God is not finished. Not with you, not
- 19:52with your family, not with your calling, not
- 19:54with your story. Gratitude begins whenever you
- 19:57stop measuring God by your season and begin measuring
- 20:01your season by your God. Now, let's step into
- 20:04the New Testament again. I mean, Acts 16, Paul
- 20:07and Silas are beaten, chained, locked in a prison
- 20:10in midnight, the darkest hour, and they begin
- 20:14praying and singing hymns to God. Gratitude broken,
- 20:18The prison opened. Gratitude shifted the atmosphere.
- 20:21Gratitude invited the supernatural. Gratitude
- 20:25shook the foundation of what was holding them.
- 20:28Some of you have midnight places. Places where
- 20:31you feel like hope is thin and dark and really
- 20:35heavy. But the Holy Spirit wants to awaken a
- 20:38song in you again. Not because the chains are
- 20:41gone, but because the God who breaks chains is
- 20:45in you. And so let's talk about the Holy Spirit
- 20:49role again, because many people try to grit their
- 20:52way into gratitude, and you can't. Gratitude
- 20:56is fruit, fruit of the Spirit. Fruit grows whenever
- 21:01there's connection. And Jesus said that in John
- 21:0515 .5, apart from me, you can do nothing. You
- 21:09can't produce gratitude on willpower. You can't
- 21:13squeeze out thankfulness if you try harder. You
- 21:15can't magically become a grateful person by positive
- 21:18thinking. Gratitude grows when you remain in
- 21:21Him, remain in prayer, remain in the Word, remain
- 21:26in His presence, and remain in surrender. The
- 21:30Holy Spirit is the one who cultivates gratitude
- 21:32in the way that rain cultivates flowers. The
- 21:38way sunshine awakens life, the way that warmth
- 21:41brings numb fingers back to feeling. His job
- 21:44is not to make your life easy. His job is to
- 21:49make your heart alive. And I want to bring you
- 21:53to Psalm 136, a chapter where every verse ends
- 21:57with his loving kindness like we talked about
- 22:00before. And this is everlasting because we forget.
- 22:05because gratitude leaks, because we are suffering
- 22:08shouts, because fear screams, but God knew if
- 22:12we fear enough, his heart's remember 46 times.
- 22:16Like we said before, 46 times he had to repeat
- 22:18it because he knew that we would need it. Because
- 22:21gratitude is not built on information. Gratitude
- 22:23is built on repetition. And that's why we're
- 22:25repeating this. If you repeat gratitude long
- 22:28enough, your heart will begin to believe the
- 22:31truth again. Now listen to me carefully here.
- 22:34Gratitude is not pretending. Gratitude is perceiving.
- 22:38Gratitude doesn't erase wounds. It reframes them.
- 22:43Gratitude doesn't minimize your pain. It magnifies
- 22:46God's presence in it. Gratitude doesn't deny
- 22:49your trauma. It declares that trauma didn't get
- 22:52the last word. And some of you today need to
- 22:55reclaim your sense of awe. And it's been overwhelming.
- 23:00by its wrong that you've lost it and that what
- 23:04was holy. And so you've been so overwhelmed by
- 23:08what's wrong and what you've lost. And we've
- 23:12lost out of what's holy. But Psalm 126 .3 says,
- 23:15the Lord has done great things for us and we
- 23:18are filled with joy. Gratitude rises when all
- 23:21returns and all of the God is sovereign. All
- 23:24of God is patient. All of God is kind and powerful.
- 23:29and that the God has been faithful in every season.
- 23:33And I want to talk directly to the people that
- 23:35feel numb, spiritually numb, emotionally numb,
- 23:38physically exhausted. You think numbness feels
- 23:40like failure. Numbness often means that you've
- 23:44been in the survival mode too long. The Holy
- 23:47Spirit is nudging your numbness. He's healing
- 23:49it. In Isaiah 42 .3, it says, a bruised reed,
- 23:54he will not break. and dimly burning wick he
- 23:57will not extinguish. The wick doesn't have to
- 24:01be bright. It just has to be alive. And gratitude
- 24:05begins when the Holy Spirit breathes oxygen into
- 24:07your flame. I want to show you something so awesome
- 24:11in Luke 17. Jesus heals ten leopards, but only
- 24:16one returns to give thanks. And Jesus says, your
- 24:20faith has made you well. Gratitude brings wholeness.
- 24:24Gratitude brings restoration. Gratitude completes
- 24:28the healing. Many people receive blessings, but
- 24:32only grateful people receive holiness. Now I
- 24:37would like to end this episode, and I would love
- 24:40to pray for you guys. Holy Spirit, I lift every
- 24:47worried, wounded, tired, overwhelmed person that's
- 24:50listening. Breathe into their lungs again. Restore
- 24:54their joy, their depression that has been stole.
- 24:58Restore their hope that has been disappointedly
- 25:00crushed. Restore their gratitude that anxiety
- 25:02has suffocated. Restore the clarity that has
- 25:05confusion blurred. Restore the softness of a
- 25:08stressed heart. Restore perspective where pain
- 25:12has narrowed their vision. Remind them of every
- 25:14moment that you've carried them, held them, protected
- 25:16them, covered them. Help them remember not the
- 25:19pain, but the Presence. Give them eyes to see
- 25:24your fingertips in every chapter of their story.
- 25:27Let thanksgiving arise, not from their strength,
- 25:30but from yours. In Jesus name I pray. Amen. We
- 25:35hope that this episode encouraged you, opened
- 25:39your eyes. And if you're listening, you're not
- 25:43behind. You're not forgotten. You're not finished.
- 25:48The Holy Spirit is not done with you. And your
- 25:51story isn't over. It's unfolding. And gratitude?
- 25:57Gratitude is how he's rewriting your next chapter.
- 26:01And so we hope this message inspired you. We
- 26:03hope that this message encouraged you. We hope
- 26:06that this encouraged you to spend time with him
- 26:08over this next couple of days and really think
- 26:12about everything that we have to be thankful
- 26:14for as we enter his courts with Thanksgiving.
- 26:17If this message inspired you, share it. Write
