- 1:44Speaker 2: I can just fucking hear him. I don't know where
- 1:45Speaker 2: the fuck he's coming from.
- 1:46Speaker 3: That I would not put it past him.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Kiwi's pretty fucking scary.
- 1:49Speaker 3: Yeah, he's dope.
- 1:52Speaker 2: All right, what do we got lined up? This is
- 1:55Speaker 2: day two, Day two.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Day two, which means that there is still five days
- 2:00Speaker 3: is left?
- 2:01Speaker 2: Can we math o? Yeah? Five days after this?
- 2:03Speaker 3: After this think I was like, is that right?
- 2:07Speaker 2: I think it's right, makes sense to be right, super cool. Okay,
- 2:11Speaker 2: the cases coming down the pipe for you guys are
- 2:13Speaker 2: pretty intense. We go to wide variety coming at you.
- 2:16Speaker 3: There is actually a wide variety.
- 2:17Speaker 2: We had Robert the Doll yesterday. So we're moving from
- 2:20Speaker 2: paranormal to not so paranormal today, a little more murderous
- 2:24Speaker 2: and skevious today, which is good.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Tell me more, tell me more, tell me more. Not
- 2:31Speaker 3: does he have a car? No, be careful what you
- 2:36Speaker 3: might ruin that song for someone.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Probably just did.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Good to keep it up.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Make a nasty review. Yeah, short story. Someone was yeah, yeah,
- 2:49Speaker 2: that's it. That's someone was mean and was like, oh
- 2:52Speaker 2: my god, you just ruined that thing.
- 2:53Speaker 3: I can't even remember. It was something that we sang,
- 2:55Speaker 3: and apparently we've ruined that song for that.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Yeah, we upset someone, We don't We don't really care.
- 3:01Speaker 2: We're not gonna apologize for being ourselves.
- 3:03Speaker 3: That's true, but yourself. Don't apologize for being yourself.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Be yourself and be wicked and grim.
- 3:09Speaker 3: There you go, boom boom.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Okay, you ready to talk about this totally? You got
- 3:14Speaker 2: the candy ready?
- 3:15Speaker 3: Yeah, except then I can't really eat it while I'm like,
- 3:18Speaker 3: that's fair, you know, podcasting, that's fair. So it's just
- 3:21Speaker 3: taunting me. But it'll be there when we're done.
- 3:23Speaker 2: We're gonna eat it all and then buy more, because
- 3:25Speaker 2: that's what you do.
- 3:26Speaker 3: I think we've already replaced her halling we can hand
- 3:28Speaker 3: me like three times, which is not the best.
- 3:31Speaker 2: We've replaced it twice.
- 3:34Speaker 3: I think we've boughten three batches of.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Yeah, but that's replaced twice. It's not replaced three times.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Okay, whatever, we've boughten three batches three times. Yes, don't
- 3:42Speaker 3: feel bad because you know worth it totally.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Okay, you're ready for this, I'm ready. You're sure, So
- 3:50Speaker 2: I'm sure. Okay, So I'm not even going to tell
- 3:52Speaker 2: you what it is yet. I'm just going to dive
- 3:54Speaker 2: in and start with the story.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Oh, the suspense.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Okay, so picture this. It's July eighteenth, nineteen eleven, and
- 4:03Speaker 2: my computer just went to sleep. I had to move
- 4:07Speaker 2: the mouse. No, butny went to sleep on me because
- 4:12Speaker 2: I was not doing things. Okay, so let me do
- 4:14Speaker 2: it again. You ready, Yeah, Okay, second time. It's starm
- 4:17Speaker 2: It's July eighteenth, nineteen eleven, and a baseball pitcher stands
- 4:22Speaker 2: on a pitching mound in the middle of a ball diamond,
- 4:26Speaker 2: sweat beating on his forehead, and his nerves build and
- 4:30Speaker 2: it gets the best of him, but he shrugs him
- 4:33Speaker 2: off the best he can. He stares down the batter,
- 4:37Speaker 2: He winds up the pitch and throws it towards the batter.
- 4:42Speaker 2: The ball hurls towards him, but it veers off and
- 4:45Speaker 2: hits the batter in the shoulder. He gets a free base.
- 4:49Speaker 2: The pain from the hit is nothing compared to the
- 4:51Speaker 2: excitement of walking to the first as the crowd cheers
- 4:55Speaker 2: and simultaneously boos both teams. Right, that's fair. But possibly
- 5:02Speaker 2: that excitement is nothing compared to the disappointment and the
- 5:06Speaker 2: anger that the pitcher feels. You see, he didn't just
- 5:10Speaker 2: let a player walk. He may have just lost his life.
- 5:14Speaker 2: You see, this baseball game isn't any ordinary game. Each
- 5:19Speaker 2: and every player on the field for this team is
- 5:22Speaker 2: a convicted felon and found themselves sitting on death row.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Now they are playing a deathmatch. Winners could walk away
- 5:32Speaker 2: with their lives while the losers lose it all.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Wow, no way, yes.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Way, no way, yes fucking this is a real fucking thing.
- 5:47Speaker 3: Holy shit, because there's not enough pressure when you're playing sports,
- 5:50Speaker 3: right that your freaking life is on the line.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Yes, So, oh gosh, let's get into this.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Okay.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Yeah, a Wyoming State Penitentiary all Stars were not a
- 6:03Speaker 2: normal baseball team, as you probably gathered. They were a
- 6:07Speaker 2: twelve man team comprised of three rapists, a forger, five thieves,
- 6:12Speaker 2: and three murderers.
- 6:14Speaker 3: Okay, not really the lineup that I'd want to be
- 6:18Speaker 3: like at all, not really what you call all stars.
- 6:21Speaker 2: No, well, this was the state petary country. Okay, so
- 6:26Speaker 2: let's backtrack a little bit. In nineteen oh one, Wyoming
- 6:30Speaker 2: State Penitentiary was opened up during the times of what
- 6:34Speaker 2: we know as the Wild West, and I mean that literally.
- 6:38Speaker 2: It was the wild West. There were thieves, bandits, you know, outlaws,
- 6:43Speaker 2: the whole wild West scenario. People were being hung at
- 6:46Speaker 2: the gallows. Town folks raised pitchforks and protests against those
- 6:50Speaker 2: who were breaking the law, like it's the fucking wild West.
- 6:54Speaker 2: And if these outlaws did find themselves in the hands
- 6:57Speaker 2: of those pitchfork wielding mobs before going to prison, their
- 7:01Speaker 2: sentence was usually much more grim. See what I did there, Yeah,
- 7:07Speaker 2: I just wanted to give myself that little self high.
- 7:09Speaker 3: Five, pat on your back.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Ye. Also last episode I did another little word play
- 7:16Speaker 2: there too with Robert the Dall, because he inspired the
- 7:20Speaker 2: child plays movies chucky yep. I used how the adults
- 7:23Speaker 2: just shrugged off and just considered it was child's play.
- 7:28Speaker 2: But I didn't. I didn't give myself a public high.
- 7:32Speaker 2: I wanted to see if anyone would note that. That's
- 7:35Speaker 2: why I wanted to talk about it.
- 7:36Speaker 3: But oh my gosh, well let's see.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Well see, let us know if you if you caught that,
- 7:40Speaker 2: so what would happen is some would be caught before
- 7:44Speaker 2: the sheriffs could catch them, so be caught by the mobs.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Others were broken free from the prisons and taken by
- 7:52Speaker 2: the mobs.
- 7:53Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, Yes.
- 7:55Speaker 2: They would do this if the law, if they believe
- 7:57Speaker 2: the law wasn't carrying out just as fast enough the
- 8:00Speaker 2: likning of the people.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Okay.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Either way, if the outlaws were in the hands of
- 8:06Speaker 2: the mobs, they didn't last long. They would be beaten,
- 8:09Speaker 2: and they would often be strung up and hung in
- 8:12Speaker 2: various places in the town.
- 8:13Speaker 3: Holy shit.
- 8:14Speaker 2: At times, body parts would be taken as tokens as
- 8:17Speaker 2: souvenirs by the mobs. Skulls would be used as ashtrays
- 8:21Speaker 2: for example, Holy hat, and even in some cases, skin
- 8:24Speaker 2: would be used as leather for a variety of morbid keepsakes,
- 8:28Speaker 2: such as shoes.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Okay, I already thought this shit was going self. Then
- 8:33Speaker 3: that's real.
- 8:34Speaker 2: So that's what you could expect a mob would do
- 8:36Speaker 2: to you in the wild fucking.
- 8:37Speaker 3: West, Oh say, I mean, I guess.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Yeah, we're talking the wild West here. It literally fucking wild.
- 8:43Speaker 3: Oh my gosh.
- 8:45Speaker 2: So inside the prison, the outlaws didn't get killed in
- 8:49Speaker 2: such ways, but the torment it wasn't much different. In fact,
- 8:54Speaker 2: a penitentiary in itself, no matter the conditions, was considered
- 8:59Speaker 2: quite progressive.
- 9:00Speaker 3: So okay, So basically I just have to say, if
- 9:03Speaker 3: there's any time to be a good guy, I feel
- 9:06Speaker 3: like at that time you'd be a good guy.
- 9:08Speaker 2: I think at any time you should.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Be okay, at any time, at any time, totally fair.
- 9:13Speaker 3: But that is just like I think I would be
- 9:15Speaker 3: an angel, yeah, because that sounds also like scary.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, definitely. I don't want my skin to
- 9:22Speaker 2: be someone's fucking.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Shoes really shit.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Yeah. Okay, So now, the Wyoming State Penitentiary wasn't It
- 9:31Speaker 2: was pretty much ran by the man by the name
- 9:34Speaker 2: of Otto Graham, who is an extremely wealthy businessman who
- 9:38Speaker 2: had a hunger for money and not much of a
- 9:40Speaker 2: taste for the well being of the prisoners or inmates. Okay,
- 9:44Speaker 2: he had a contract with a prison and the state,
- 9:47Speaker 2: and I don't really know how this worked, but somehow
- 9:50Speaker 2: he was bringing in over fifty cents per prisoner per
- 9:55Speaker 2: day from the state, so he was being paid by
- 9:57Speaker 2: the state per prisoner. I don't know how that worked exactly, Okay.
- 10:00Speaker 3: And she's probably like back then and that would add
- 10:03Speaker 3: up real quick.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Oh definitely, definitely. It might have been because he was
- 10:07Speaker 2: in charge and he was getting that to take care
- 10:09Speaker 2: of the prisoners or something, but he definitely wasn't spending
- 10:11Speaker 2: on the prisoners. He's spending it in his own pocket.
- 10:16Speaker 2: So not only was he getting this money from the prisoners.
- 10:20Speaker 2: In that aspect, he was also operating a broom factory
- 10:24Speaker 2: out of the prison. While the prisoners were being put
- 10:27Speaker 2: through long, hard labour's days manufacturing brooms for him. He
- 10:30Speaker 2: would clean house with the profece and just again add
- 10:34Speaker 2: more money to his pockets.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Okay, that's really interesting.
- 10:37Speaker 2: So yeah, on top of the brutal working conditions the
- 10:40Speaker 2: prisoners were going through, they were fed just enough food
- 10:44Speaker 2: to keep them from starving. Oh my gosh, and generally
- 10:47Speaker 2: it was rancid food at that.
- 10:49Speaker 3: Wow.
- 10:49Speaker 2: So just in case that money that he is getting
- 10:51Speaker 2: paid per prisoner per day is supposed to go to
- 10:53Speaker 2: their care and well being, like, certainly, yeah, it certainly
- 10:56Speaker 2: wasn't actually.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Going to and then he's off his best life pretty much.
- 11:01Speaker 2: So with these things in mind, I can't begin to
- 11:04Speaker 2: imagine the living conditions. I don't know what they would
- 11:06Speaker 2: have been, like, I don't know what they were.
- 11:08Speaker 3: But probably terrible.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Let your imagination go on that one. So either way,
- 11:13Speaker 2: it's a foul place and it only fed the golden
- 11:16Speaker 2: idea of trying to escape, and of course if you
- 11:19Speaker 2: were caught trying to escape, you were killed. And if
- 11:23Speaker 2: you didn't try to escape, there was a good chance
- 11:25Speaker 2: you might end up being killed anyways by other inmates
- 11:28Speaker 2: inside the prison. Needless to say, it was hell on
- 11:32Speaker 2: earth and morale was extremely low.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Yeah, it sounds just awful.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Yeah, not a place you want to go.
- 11:39Speaker 3: No, no, no, definitely so far. It's just like I'm
- 11:43Speaker 3: just like, lah, I don't even know what to say.
- 11:47Speaker 3: You're just really throwing everything out us here.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Sorry, Dode, you want me to stop?
- 11:52Speaker 3: No, okay, carry on.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Just can you imagine if that was just the end
- 11:55Speaker 2: of the episode.
- 11:55Speaker 3: Okay, well, teculator.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Okay, Well we're gonna move forward a little bit to
- 12:02Speaker 2: nineteen eleven. So, however, a new political leader came in
- 12:06Speaker 2: and got rid of Auto and made a new man
- 12:09Speaker 2: by the name of Sheriff Felix Alston, the man in charge.
- 12:14Speaker 2: He's the new warden. Felix was definitely more progressive than Auto.
- 12:18Speaker 2: He didn't think that making prisoners work endless hours and
- 12:21Speaker 2: terrible conditions would turn around their lives very much or
- 12:25Speaker 2: make them any much of a different person for that matter. Okay, awesome, Yeah,
- 12:29Speaker 2: definitely is. He wanted to try and reform them, and
- 12:32Speaker 2: you know, perhaps maybe like make this prison or even
- 12:35Speaker 2: other prisons a better place in that regard, so he
- 12:38Speaker 2: definitely tried to do his best where he could.
- 12:40Speaker 3: That's awesome.
- 12:41Speaker 2: He implemented education for the inmates as well as physical
- 12:44Speaker 2: training regiments while the men were put to work, though
- 12:47Speaker 2: don't get me wrong that they weren't. It was no
- 12:49Speaker 2: longer making brooms endlessly for someone else's profit. It was
- 12:53Speaker 2: instead generally for the public, like fixing roads in the
- 12:57Speaker 2: local area of the states.
- 13:00Speaker 3: Sounds awesome, And you said it wasn't like as long
- 13:02Speaker 3: about hours.
- 13:03Speaker 2: And yes, yes, But most importantly, the men were given
- 13:07Speaker 2: free time. They got time to roam the prison yard
- 13:10Speaker 2: and enjoy the outdoor air and even participate in extracurricular activities.
- 13:15Speaker 2: The favor of the prisoners was the most popular sport
- 13:18Speaker 2: in the USA at the time, good old fashion baseball.
- 13:22Speaker 3: Okay, yeah, dun dun dum.
- 13:27Speaker 2: I don't know if that's really a dun dun dun.
- 13:29Speaker 3: Well that you're leading us up to something. Oh, definitely
- 13:33Speaker 3: to the main event.
- 13:36Speaker 2: So the men would band together and play whenever they
- 13:38Speaker 2: had the opportunity, and they took it seriously, but like
- 13:41Speaker 2: not like too serious where it's like they get angry
- 13:43Speaker 2: or whatever. It was all just for fun after all.
- 13:45Speaker 2: But like they they had fun and it was their sport.
- 13:48Speaker 2: They played to win the.
- 13:49Speaker 3: Game and stuff right, still probably competitive.
- 13:52Speaker 2: Yeah, but for fun all at the same time, you
- 13:54Speaker 2: know what we're talking about. So their skill in the
- 13:57Speaker 2: game grew not only as players but as teammates and
- 14:00Speaker 2: the new warden Warden Felix began to take notice as
- 14:03Speaker 2: the men hit home runs over the prison walls and
- 14:05Speaker 2: even began to throw curve balls towards each other. So
- 14:09Speaker 2: as this was going on, he thought some of the
- 14:11Speaker 2: guys were good, like real good, like good enough to
- 14:15Speaker 2: maybe even go pro. Huh really, So, after talking with
- 14:20Speaker 2: some of the higher up connections that he got or
- 14:22Speaker 2: has that even got him this job in the first place,
- 14:26Speaker 2: they made an official team. They had new uniforms made
- 14:30Speaker 2: and all. They called themselves the Wyoming State Penitentiary All Stars.
- 14:37Speaker 2: So when news got out of this, the public laughed.
- 14:40Speaker 2: They just laughed it off, thinking that it was a
- 14:41Speaker 2: whole farce and that they were going to be like
- 14:45Speaker 2: laughed out of this playing field as they were about
- 14:48Speaker 2: to play a local team, the Wyoming Supply Company Juniors. However,
- 14:54Speaker 2: when it came time for game day, they would realize
- 14:57Speaker 2: just how serious these inmates.
- 14:59Speaker 3: Were and how good they were.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Probably Yep, the date was set July eighteenth, nineteen eleven.
- 15:07Speaker 2: The scum of the Earth inmates would be playing baseball.
- 15:10Speaker 2: But it wasn't going to be a game of sport.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Many of the leaders involved in the team, including Warden Felix,
- 15:17Speaker 2: put money down in the game the Penitentiary All Stars
- 15:21Speaker 2: in fact, Wait what wait? What by that? Sense? Don't
- 15:28Speaker 2: make sense? I wrote that, I wrote that too fast. Okay,
- 15:32Speaker 2: So Felix Warden put money down in the game they
- 15:34Speaker 2: put down. He put the money down on the Penitentiary
- 15:38Speaker 2: All Star All Star team, his own team.
- 15:40Speaker 3: He really believe that, Yes.
- 15:42Speaker 2: He believed in them so much. Yeah, and so the
- 15:45Speaker 2: men didn't want to lose. The men didn't want to lose.
- 15:49Speaker 2: The Warden didn't want them to lose or anything.
- 15:52Speaker 3: They knew that this bet and stuff was put on them.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Well, they knew because the warden told them if they won,
- 15:59Speaker 2: time would be moved from their sentence. No, if they lost,
- 16:04Speaker 2: time would be added.
- 16:06Speaker 3: Holy shit.
- 16:07Speaker 2: But most importantly, quote individual errors that cost the team
- 16:13Speaker 2: to win would result in death.
- 16:16Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, Okay, I thought that this like I
- 16:20Speaker 3: was like enjoying how this was going and this this
- 16:23Speaker 3: new person coming in and might great ideas, but this
- 16:26Speaker 3: is like this is terrible.
- 16:28Speaker 2: Yeah, gambling kind of wrecked all that.
- 16:30Speaker 3: Holy shit.
- 16:32Speaker 2: So the game was played and was played with grace
- 16:35Speaker 2: as gentlemen. These prisoners shocked the public in fact, with
- 16:40Speaker 2: how polite and graceful they played the game.
- 16:43Speaker 3: Really, even though they had this massive amount of pressure
- 16:46Speaker 3: on them.
- 16:47Speaker 2: Yeah, not only that, but a few small blunders, you know,
- 16:50Speaker 2: away from nerves, like yeah, hitting the picture in the
- 16:53Speaker 2: or hitting the battery on the shoulder. The Penitentiary State
- 16:56Speaker 2: All Start, sorry, the Penitentiary All Stars still managed to
- 17:00Speaker 2: win the game, but not just by a bit. They
- 17:03Speaker 2: won by a lot. They fucking destroyed the other team really,
- 17:07Speaker 2: which is one of the best teams in the area,
- 17:09Speaker 2: by the way, not just like some team they threw together.
- 17:12Speaker 2: This is already an established team in the area.
- 17:14Speaker 3: They had no idea that was coming.
- 17:16Speaker 2: Yeah, they won eleven to one.
- 17:19Speaker 3: Holy heck.
- 17:20Speaker 2: The star of the game was player Joseph Sang, who
- 17:24Speaker 2: hit two home runs, one of them being a grand Slam.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Do you know what that is?
- 17:29Speaker 3: Oh, is that when the are loaded the.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Bases are loaded. So you have a player on one base, one, two,
- 17:34Speaker 2: and three, and he's up to back, so he hits it,
- 17:37Speaker 2: so he gets four players across the plate.
- 17:40Speaker 3: That definitely would reduce his sentence.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Newspapers ate up that story of the whole team and
- 17:46Speaker 2: Joseph being a focal point for that matter. His story
- 17:51Speaker 2: was now out though, the public was starting to talk
- 17:55Speaker 2: about Joseph and what he did to get into the prison.
- 18:00Speaker 2: What he did was he murdered his work supervisor out
- 18:03Speaker 2: in the street. Holy yeah. However, that work supervisor just
- 18:09Speaker 2: so happened to be married to the woman that Joseph loved.
- 18:13Speaker 2: And what happened is it painted a picture of a
- 18:15Speaker 2: love struck man who acted out for the feelings towards
- 18:19Speaker 2: a woman, not someone who did it out of rage
- 18:23Speaker 2: or some drunken state. He killed this man out of love.
- 18:28Speaker 2: It made him relatable and even he had some pity
- 18:32Speaker 2: given on him by some people.
- 18:33Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, so people are just like obsessed with him.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Now, yeah they're thinking that, you know, maybe he wasn't
- 18:38Speaker 2: like a villain, but maybe more just like a love
- 18:40Speaker 2: struck man whose bright future ahead of him was taken
- 18:43Speaker 2: away or something like that. Hell, he could have been
- 18:45Speaker 2: a professional baseball player. Now he's just sitting here in
- 18:48Speaker 2: jail for emotions. But for just emotions that got the
- 18:53Speaker 2: better of him. Maybe he's not a bad guy. That's
- 18:55Speaker 2: kind of the perspective that's.
- 18:57Speaker 3: Being paid to. Okay, that seems interesting. I thought that
- 19:00Speaker 3: when you start talking that way, I thought it was
- 19:01Speaker 3: going to be going the opposite way, that the town
- 19:05Speaker 3: would like turn on them even more, or something like
- 19:07Speaker 3: of jealousy that now they're like playing on this all
- 19:10Speaker 3: star team and blah blah blah, they're like did something.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Terrible, No, they they began to start liking this team.
- 19:17Speaker 3: Wow. Okay, yeah, I did not see that going that way.
- 19:21Speaker 2: Well Joseph and other players. Wow, I stumbled that sense
- 19:24Speaker 2: Joseph and the other players. There we go. I can
- 19:27Speaker 2: articulate words sometimes if a tribe, good, thank you, high five,
- 19:31Speaker 2: yay a plus. They kept playing more and more games,
- 19:36Speaker 2: and they kept winning too. They had a lot at stake,
- 19:39Speaker 2: so they always played with their best even when it
- 19:42Speaker 2: came time for practice or training. They began to get
- 19:45Speaker 2: special treatment at the prison, in fact, which enraged other inmates.
- 19:49Speaker 3: Oh yes, it.
- 19:51Speaker 2: Led some to even try killing other players. Like Joseph
- 19:54Speaker 2: who was inches away from having a twenty five pound
- 19:58Speaker 2: box of sand dropped on his head from about thirty
- 20:01Speaker 2: feet up as he sat in the prison yard. If
- 20:05Speaker 2: it hit him, it would have killed him, but he
- 20:07Speaker 2: just so happened to lean out of the way at
- 20:09Speaker 2: that exactly.
- 20:09Speaker 3: Heck, well, okay, sorry, did you already go over how
- 20:12Speaker 3: they like chose the people that were going to play
- 20:14Speaker 3: on the baseball team originally? Was it just people that
- 20:16Speaker 3: kind of wanted to I.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Don't know how they selected, but considering it's the all
- 20:21Speaker 2: star team, they probably would have just like picked the
- 20:24Speaker 2: best players, like done tryouts or something like that.
- 20:26Speaker 3: So there could have been some anger and jealousy towards
- 20:29Speaker 3: them from the other end.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Makes it very possible, very possible. Actually, that's something I
- 20:32Speaker 2: never even thought of. Wow, good for you.
- 20:34Speaker 3: Good thinking, well, that's why they're trying to kill them
- 20:36Speaker 3: and stuff.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Well I was just thinking like jealousy after the fact
- 20:40Speaker 2: that it.
- 20:40Speaker 3: Was that they're getting special treatment.
- 20:42Speaker 2: Okay, but it could be a combination of both too.
- 20:44Speaker 2: I never thought about the you got on the team
- 20:47Speaker 2: and I didn't.
- 20:47Speaker 3: Oh, okay, I could. I could totally see that happening too.
- 20:50Speaker 2: Definitely. So more betting kept happening too, More games get
- 20:55Speaker 2: being played, all the while Joseph Sang kept being the
- 20:59Speaker 2: VIP the game. He kept that status, hitting home runs
- 21:03Speaker 2: with ease. Real people are starting to think, surely Joseph
- 21:08Speaker 2: was earning his freedom with each game. His execution date,
- 21:12Speaker 2: in fact, was coming closer and closer, and with his performance,
- 21:16Speaker 2: maybe he would be set free instead. So there is
- 21:21Speaker 2: something in here. Though Joseph did actually escape his Gallow
- 21:29Speaker 2: hangings date. He did escape that mostly because he was
- 21:35Speaker 2: playing baseball. Okay, so he's supposed to be hung. He
- 21:40Speaker 2: never got hung, and he's just still playing baseball.
- 21:42Speaker 3: Well, it's a famous person.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Pretty much. Word began to spread about the betting, though,
- 21:49Speaker 2: and soon Otto, the man who previously ran the prison,
- 21:53Speaker 2: got wind of it. From the start, he hated the
- 21:56Speaker 2: idea of the inmates playing ball first of all, and
- 21:58Speaker 2: he wanted the prison back second of all so he
- 22:00Speaker 2: could be making those brooms and the ridiculous profiting. So
- 22:04Speaker 2: he had no proof, but he kept trying to see
- 22:06Speaker 2: if he could find a way to unveil the betting
- 22:09Speaker 2: rinks rounding the baseball team, and he was kept trying
- 22:12Speaker 2: to talk about it to those he could and try
- 22:14Speaker 2: and prove it. So, regardless of that, over a total
- 22:20Speaker 2: of fifteen months, the team played a total of forty
- 22:24Speaker 2: five games totally.
- 22:25Speaker 3: That's a lot.
- 22:27Speaker 2: How many do you think they won.
- 22:28Speaker 3: I'm going to say that they won them all.
- 22:30Speaker 2: They didn't win them all.
- 22:31Speaker 3: Oh shucks.
- 22:32Speaker 2: They won thirty nine games out of forty five and
- 22:36Speaker 2: they lost six.
- 22:37Speaker 3: Okay, that's pretty good.
- 22:38Speaker 2: Still, that is extremely he could. Yes, an approximate total
- 22:42Speaker 2: of one hundred and thirty six thousand dollars had been
- 22:46Speaker 2: bet on that team, approximately equivalent to four million dollars today.
- 22:51Speaker 3: Holy so.
- 22:53Speaker 2: Now, unfortunately, the team had been shut down after those
- 22:57Speaker 2: fifteen months, through the room of the betting beginning to
- 23:01Speaker 2: be spread and how the politicians were using the team
- 23:05Speaker 2: to make money. So some of those exact politicians cracked
- 23:09Speaker 2: down on gambling to revert those rumors, and the team
- 23:12Speaker 2: was eventually replaced with educational programs. Now, what you're wondering
- 23:19Speaker 2: about the sentencing, Yes, the players get free.
- 23:23Speaker 3: This is some of the wildest shit I've ever heard.
- 23:25Speaker 3: This story correct, fascinating.
- 23:28Speaker 2: I wanted to research this one for like, I've never
- 23:30Speaker 2: heard players like Joseph saying did not get to see
- 23:35Speaker 2: their freedom again, though Joseph did prolong his sentence due
- 23:39Speaker 2: to actively playing the game. Like I said, and even
- 23:43Speaker 2: though three hundred and fifty locals petitioned it. On May
- 23:48Speaker 2: twenty fourth, nineteen twelve, at two forty five am, in
- 23:54Speaker 2: the shining moonlight, he took his last breath as he
- 23:57Speaker 2: was hung at the gallows.
- 24:00Speaker 3: Curiously, so he was still executed not.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Even two years after the beginning of the first game, So.
- 24:06Speaker 3: All of that was just like a lie, really, yep.
- 24:10Speaker 2: So the local newspaper the next day after Joseph was hung,
- 24:15Speaker 2: it read this, his steps were steady and he went
- 24:19Speaker 2: to his death in a manner which stamped him as
- 24:22Speaker 2: a brave man.
- 24:25Speaker 3: Wow. I feel like he's just like, I don't know,
- 24:30Speaker 3: just this, I can't think of the words, but almost
- 24:34Speaker 3: just like, I don't know, just okay when he first
- 24:39Speaker 3: went to prison to what he was when he died,
- 24:42Speaker 3: like just almost completely new reputation in a sense, I think, So, yeah,
- 24:47Speaker 3: it's just kind of kind of cool for him.
- 24:49Speaker 2: Really totally totally, and I can only imagine that it
- 24:53Speaker 2: would have changed a lot of the other inmates as
- 24:54Speaker 2: well who were involved. But yeah, whoever was involved. I
- 25:00Speaker 2: hope it changed them for the better, and I hope
- 25:02Speaker 2: they did get to prolong and live a little bit
- 25:04Speaker 2: more and enjoy the game. But that is the story.
- 25:07Speaker 2: I Wyoming State Penitentiary, all starts.
- 25:10Speaker 3: Surprised that if I, if anyone, I thought that he
- 25:13Speaker 3: maybe would have gone to like an early release or
- 25:15Speaker 3: not had to go through with the execution.
- 25:17Speaker 2: Not even him.
- 25:18Speaker 3: Hm hm wow. I can just imagine, just like I
- 25:25Speaker 3: think I would play worse like all those people out there.
- 25:28Speaker 3: They seem like just the way that you present the
- 25:30Speaker 3: story and stuff like that, they were doing good and
- 25:32Speaker 3: like the pressure was like fine for them. I would
- 25:34Speaker 3: be shitting my pants and probably like not even be
- 25:37Speaker 3: able to even throw a ball.
- 25:38Speaker 2: They were just that good compared to the other teams
- 25:40Speaker 2: they were playing.
- 25:42Speaker 3: But still that pressure, I feel like would almost make
- 25:44Speaker 3: you terrible. I don't know, but I'm one of those
- 25:46Speaker 3: people that has trouble under pressure. Some people strive with
- 25:50Speaker 3: fair enough, right, So a little.
- 25:52Speaker 2: Fun fact though, they did end up playing that same
- 25:54Speaker 2: team they played the first first game.
- 25:56Speaker 3: With, Yeah, when they won eleven one, really good team.
- 25:58Speaker 2: The second time they won eleven to one again. Oh,
- 26:03Speaker 2: the third time they didn't win as easily. I can't
- 26:05Speaker 2: remember the exact score. I didn't have a written down.
- 26:08Speaker 2: I think it was fifteen to ten. But they still
- 26:11Speaker 2: beat them every time they.
- 26:13Speaker 3: So those teams that did beat them were probably like,
- 26:17Speaker 3: probably pretty awesome.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Probably.
- 26:19Speaker 3: Huh, that's so cool, I mean coolest, yeah, cool, all
- 26:24Speaker 3: the things that we talk about like they're I don't know,
- 26:27Speaker 3: like that's wild and crazy that something like that would
- 26:30Speaker 3: even happen. But it's a really interesting story.
- 26:32Speaker 2: It is. It's a crazy one. So I hope you
- 26:35Speaker 2: got some epic lined up for the next one.
- 26:37Speaker 3: I don't know. You know, I'm not sharing nothing. Oh okay,
- 26:41Speaker 3: I do have all my That makes it sound like
- 26:42Speaker 3: I'm not prepared. I do have all of my cases selected.
- 26:46Speaker 3: But yeah, I'm gonna make you wait.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Okay, I better do it. You haven't researched shit yet,
- 26:51Speaker 2: have you?
- 26:51Speaker 3: I have? Oh? I had research each want a bed?
- 26:54Speaker 3: I know, like, oh okay, I can't bit Yeah yeah,
- 26:57Speaker 3: but no, I'm not sharing shit.
- 26:58Speaker 2: Okay, gotcha?
- 26:59Speaker 3: Tune in, all right, keep tuning in.
