- 0:00Are you a got to or a get to? There's the story behind that.
- 0:05This is your daily message from Chad #12117 to upgrade your
- 0:09mental game today by telling yourself a better story.
- 0:11Because the most important story you hear is the story you tell
- 0:14yourself. This message is dedicated to
- 0:16Conan Clay Whitaker. Here's the upgrade.
- 0:20You may think curiosity belongs to kids, but upgraded thinking
- 0:22knows curiosity is what keeps a grown person moving.
- 0:25Here's the story. Our three-year old grandson
- 0:29comes over and walks in the door with one request.
- 0:32Mamie, let's do pyramids. That's his word for experiments.
- 0:37Just two syllables and anything that bubbles, fizzes, or changes
- 0:40color is fair game. He loves mixing food dyes.
- 0:44He loves dumping one thing into another and waiting to see what
- 0:47happens. Jamie started doing these with
- 0:49him and I love watching it. He doesn't need the experiment
- 0:52to work, He needs the surprise. The element of surprise is what
- 0:55captivates him. English novelist Ian McEwan put
- 0:58it this way. The standard measure of how
- 1:01alive you are is your curiosity. I think he's right.
- 1:06There's nothing more powerful than a child's curiosity and
- 1:09eagerness to learn. For some reason, the desire to
- 1:12experiment wanes with age. Kids are excited about learning
- 1:15and trying something new. Doctor Gilbert has spent almost
- 1:1950 years teaching at Montclair State University and has written
- 1:23about the same contrast he once described.
- 1:26Driving to campus on the first day of school, he passed a mom
- 1:30with her two boys on the sidewalk.
- 1:32The little one was jumping up and down.
- 1:34He wasn't excited to see Doctor Gilbert.
- 1:36He was excited because the big yellow school bus was right
- 1:39behind his car. After years of walking to the
- 1:42bus stop and watching his Big Brother climb aboard, it was
- 1:45finally his turn. An hour later, Doctor Gilbert
- 1:49walked into his own first class. College students are more savvy
- 1:53and sophisticated than that little boy, but many of them
- 1:56have matured beyond the excitement to learn.
- 1:59They act like they've got to go to school.
- 2:02That little boy was eager to go to school.
- 2:05There's a lot of energy in getting to and not much if you
- 2:08feel you've got to. So here's the question, When did
- 2:13you stop getting to do things and start feeling you had to?
- 2:18That little boy didn't need a reason to be excited, he needed
- 2:21a chance to find out what was next.
- 2:23My grandson is the same way and so are you.
- 2:26The better story to tell yourself is I get to experiment
- 2:31with life. Tell me a story of something you
- 2:34got to do today to from chadsmith@gmail.com since I'm
- 2:38going to text and tell them. What's the last experiment you
- 2:41ran? You can get a free copy of my
- 2:43book, The Most Powerful Story in the World, by going to from
