Latest / Clone Wars: The Spinoff / Why Streaming Payouts Don’t Tell the Whole Story
Transcript
- 0:00Yo yo yo, welcome back to Clone Wars: The Spinoff, I'm DJ Universe on the ones and
- 0:05twos and the mic, and I got the whole crew in the building.
- 0:08We gotta talk about this Snoop clip that resurfaced this month - old interview from
- 0:12a few years back where he's on a podcast saying, quote, "Y'all paid me forty-five
- 0:16thousand dollars for a billion streams?
- 0:19A BILLION!"
- 0:21That thing went viral all over again in August, like it just happened yesterday.
- 0:25And that's the thing about the internet, it don't forget.
- 0:28That clip been recycling since 2023 and it still hits the same nerve every time it
- 0:33resurfaces, because artists still feel that same way today.
- 0:37Snoop's beef actually got resolved - dude sat down with Spotify execs back in 2025,
- 0:44they walked him through how the money actually moves, and he put his catalog back
- 0:48up.
- 0:49But the resurfaced clip proves the underlying question never got answered for the
- 0:52rest of us.
- 0:53Right, and that's what we breaking down today - not the drama,
- 0:58the actual mechanics.
- 0:59Because Spotify came back and said his numbers were off, that payments go to rights
- 1:04holders first and then get split by contract, and that Snoop owning Death Row put
- 1:08him in a better position than most artists ever get.
- 1:11That's the real lesson before we even get to the math.
- 1:14Let's get to the math then, because this is where knowledge of self comes in - you
- 1:18cannot budget generational wealth off a number you don't understand.
- 1:22Per a thousand streams in twenty twenty-six: Tidal's paying around twelve fifty,
- 1:26Apple Music's sitting around ten fifty, Amazon's somewhere between five and seven
- 1:31depending on the listener's plan, Spotify's running three fifty to four fifty,
- 1:35and YouTube's down around two dollars.
- 1:37That's before your distributor or your label takes their slice off the top.
- 1:41And that's exactly why I don't build my business plan around a stream count.
- 1:45I love Spotify, that's where my fans live, but a stream is a discovery tool,
- 1:50not a paycheck.
- 1:52On tour, merch is running thirty to fifty percent of what I actually clear at the
- 1:56door on a club-level run.
- 1:58That's the real number I'm tracking every night - not the DSP dashboard,
- 2:02the merch table.
- 2:03That's the difference between a hobby and a business right there.
- 2:07Streaming tells you who's listening.
- 2:09Touring and merch tell you who's paying.
- 2:11A real artist tracks both, but you eat off the second one.
- 2:15Now break down why the rate even moves around like that, 'cause people think it's
- 2:19one flat number and it's not.
- 2:21It's not flat at all - where the stream comes from changes the payout,
- 2:25a stream from a paid subscriber in London is worth way more than a stream from a
- 2:30free-tier listener in a lower ad-rate market.
- 2:33Then there's the threshold rules platforms added to cut down on fraud and
- 2:38low-quality content, meaning a stream doesn't always count the way you'd assume.
- 2:42And on top of all that, unless you're fully independent and self-distributing,
- 2:46your distributor or your label is taking a cut before you ever see a dollar.
- 2:51So "per stream rate" is really an average of a hundred different deals happening at
- 2:55once.
- 2:56This is Knowledge of Self, straight up - the Five Percent taught that Knowledge is
- 3:01the foundation, the first degree, because you can't build Wisdom or Understanding on
- 3:07top of something you don't know.
- 3:10Same principle applies to your royalty statement.
- 3:14If you don't know your own numbers - your split sheet, your distributor cut,
- 3:19your publishing percentage - somebody else is running your life for you.
- 3:24Supreme Mathematics 101: Knowledge plus Wisdom equals Understanding.
- 3:31Know the deal, apply it, then you understand your worth.
- 3:34That's real, because I didn't understand publishing versus masters for like the
- 3:39first two years I was putting music out.
- 3:41I thought a check was a check.
- 3:43Once I understood that a feature verse I wrote for somebody else's song still pays
- 3:48me for the rest of my life through publishing, I started treating every session
- 3:52different.
- 3:53I ask about the paperwork before I even touch the booth now.
- 3:57And that's the generational wealth play right there - publishing outlives the hype
- 4:01cycle.
- 4:02Streaming trends change, platforms change their rates, but a properly registered
- 4:07publishing split is a check that follows you and your kids.
- 4:11Register your splits with a PRO, know your percentage before you sign anything,
- 4:16and don't let "we'll handle the paperwork later" be the plan.
- 4:19So real quick before we close it out, give the people three moves they can make off
- 4:23this episode.
- 4:24One - go pull your own streaming and royalty statements this week.
- 4:29Actually read them.
- 4:31Knowledge of self starts with knowing your own numbers, not somebody else's story
- 4:36about your numbers.
- 4:37Two - stop treating merch and touring like a side hustle to the music.
- 4:41For most working artists that's the main income, so budget it,
- 4:44price it, and track it like the business it is.
- 4:47Three - get your publishing splits registered and understand masters versus
- 4:52publishing before you sign a single thing.
- 4:54That paperwork is the difference between one check and a lifetime of checks.
- 4:58That's the Clone Wars blueprint right there - know the numbers,
- 5:02own the moment, own the paper.
- 5:04Appreciate y'all for pulling up, we out.
