- 0:01Speaker 1: Local News Now, a VOCM News Update. I'm Sarah Strickland.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Residents who wish to receive their fall vaccinations can now
- 0:10Speaker 1: book an appointment through Public Health. Flu and COVID shots
- 0:13Speaker 1: are being offered at clinics across the province starting next week.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Vaccines are already available for booking at local pharmacies. Appointments
- 0:21Speaker 1: for flu and COVID shots can be booked online through
- 0:24Speaker 1: the MyChart app or by calling 1-833-951-3884. The opposition is
- 0:32Speaker 1: questioning government's use of public funds to purchase souvenir keychains
- 0:36Speaker 1: for students who took part in a pilgrimage to Beaumont-Hamill.
- 0:40Speaker 1: CBC is reporting that Minister Andrea Barber spent over $ 1, 000
- 0:45Speaker 1: on 150 custom yellow rubber boot keychains made by a
- 0:48Speaker 1: company on the West Coast. That company is said to
- 0:51Speaker 1: have connections to a PC candidate who was unsuccessful in
- 0:54Speaker 1: last year's election. Barber, who was well-known on social media
- 0:58Speaker 1: before becoming a public servant... is known for wearing yellow
- 1:02Speaker 1: rubber boots in her posts. The Liberals are questioning the
- 1:05Speaker 1: decision to hand out souvenir keychains that are part of
- 1:08Speaker 1: Barber's personal brand and not that of the province. Tourism
- 1:12Speaker 1: and culture critic Bettina Ford says the students had traveled
- 1:15Speaker 1: to Europe to remark on the province's solemn history and
- 1:17Speaker 1: it should not be remembered through a token that reflects
- 1:20Speaker 1: the minister's personal interests. VOCM News has reached out to
- 1:24Speaker 1: the province for comment. Federal Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson is
- 1:29Speaker 1: laughing off an allegation that she gave the finger to
- 1:31Speaker 1: the opposition side of the House of Commons last week.
- 1:35Speaker 1: The alleged incident occurred during a heated exchange on Canada's
- 1:38Speaker 1: relationship with France. and reports indicating that the EU nation
- 1:42Speaker 1: was interested in pursuing a snow crab fishery on the
- 1:44Speaker 1: continental shelf. Thompson is dismissing the notion that she flipped
- 1:48Speaker 1: the bird.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Absolutely not, and you think otherwise. It's ridiculous.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Thompson calls the controversy surrounding the French crab question not
- 1:56Speaker 1: an active story and says she and her cabinet colleagues
- 1:59Speaker 1: are working together in the best interest of the country.
- 2:02Speaker 2: I take this work seriously. In the heat of a
- 2:06Speaker 2: moment in the House, things get said. But I think
- 2:08Speaker 2: what's most important for me, for people to know is, look,
- 2:11Speaker 2: we are in challenging times. We have headwinds as a
- 2:15Speaker 2: country within the globe. But I am grateful for the
- 2:20Speaker 2: prime minister's leadership. I'm grateful for the team around me.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Stats Canada says more Canadians and Americans have traveled across
- 2:28Speaker 1: the border between the two countries over the last six
- 2:31Speaker 1: months compared to last year. The agency says Canadian residents
- 2:35Speaker 1: made 1.9 million return trips from the United States last
- 2:38Speaker 1: month by car and plane, up 6.8% compared to September 2025.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Stats Canada says the spike marks the sixth consecutive month
- 2:48Speaker 1: of year-over-year growth of visits to the U.S. by Canadian residents.
- 2:52Speaker 1: It says U.S. residents' visits to Canada also increased by 17.2
- 2:57Speaker 1: percent last month compared to the same month last year,
- 3:00Speaker 1: totaling 1.8 million trips. That's your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
