- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm Sarah Strickland. A judge in Western Newfoundland gave a
- 0:03Speaker 1: man a five-month community sentence for changing the labels on
- 0:07Speaker 1: meat at Dominion to make them cheaper for him and
- 0:11Speaker 1: his friends. Judge Wayne Gorman's decision says the 24-year-old man
- 0:15Speaker 1: from India worked at the grocery store and was afraid
- 0:18Speaker 1: he would be deported if convicted of the crime. However,
- 0:22Speaker 1: Gorman said he could not hand down an inadequate sentence
- 0:25Speaker 1: because of immigration concerns. His decision, says Dominion Estimates, the
- 0:30Speaker 1: man was relabeling meat for about 27 weeks, resulting in
- 0:34Speaker 1: an estimated loss of about $ 2, 700. Jolene, Jolene, Jolene.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Jolene, please don't take him just because you.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Tributes are pouring in from around the world and from
- 0:52Speaker 1: here in this province following the news of the death
- 0:55Speaker 1: of one of the best known singers and songwriters of
- 0:58Speaker 1: all time. Dolly Parton's nephew, Brian Seaver, confirmed the news
- 1:02Speaker 1: yesterday that she had passed away at the age of 80.
- 1:05Speaker 3: This video announcement is something Dolly asked of me years
- 1:08Speaker 3: ago before I fully absorbed it as a future reality.
- 1:12Speaker 3: As her head of security for more than two decades,
- 1:14Speaker 3: a role my father Larry held before me, I have
- 1:17Speaker 3: imagined the heaviness of this moment, but haven't truly felt
- 1:19Speaker 3: it until now. It is an honor, an honor that
- 1:23Speaker 3: is mixed with absolute pride and great sadness. But sadness
- 1:26Speaker 3: lies with us, not with Dolly.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Parton's career dated back to the 1960s when she performed
- 1:32Speaker 1: alongside Nashville royalty Porter Wagoner, but her talent soon eclipsed
- 1:36Speaker 1: that of her fellow performer and she achieved superstar status.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Parton was responsible for countless hits, including I Will Always
- 1:44Speaker 1: Love You, Code of Many Colors, Jolene, and 9 to 5,
- 1:48Speaker 1: and she penned many more songs for fellow artists. Among
- 1:52Speaker 1: her most famous collaborations included Kenny Rogers, and she joined
- 1:56Speaker 1: Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt in the supergroup known as Trio.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Parton also had a successful acting career, which was launched
- 2:03Speaker 1: with her role in 1980's 9 to 5. She influenced
- 2:07Speaker 1: and inspired countless performers and held a number of successful
- 2:11Speaker 1: business ventures. Named the richest artist in country music, she
- 2:15Speaker 1: was also known for her philanthropy, giving back to numerous causes.
- 2:19Speaker 1: She was reportedly suffering from an undisclosed illness in recent months,
- 2:23Speaker 1: but she would not offer details on her health status,
- 2:25Speaker 1: only to give periodic updates to the public that she
- 2:28Speaker 1: was still alive. Parton's publicist has since revealed that she
- 2:32Speaker 1: also fought a brief battle with cancer. Dolly will be
- 2:35Speaker 1: remembered this Saturday on the Cabin Party on the VOCM
- 2:38Speaker 1: Big Land FM radio network and on New Country with
- 2:41Speaker 1: Brian O'Connell. Saying Canada has been placed in a challenging
- 2:46Speaker 1: position by the U.S. decision to impose 50% tariffs on
- 2:50Speaker 1: Canadian goods... Premier Tony Wakeham has issued a statement to
- 2:53Speaker 1: the people of Newfoundland and Labrador in light of the
- 2:55Speaker 1: escalating trade war with the United States. The federal government
- 2:59Speaker 1: yesterday announced a range of supports for Canadians and its
- 3:03Speaker 1: plans to impose counter-tariffs on American goods, including a 50%
- 3:07Speaker 1: tariff on American clothes and U.S. steel and aluminum. A
- 3:12Speaker 1: 25% tariff will be applied to American appliances, dairy products, seafood,
- 3:16Speaker 1: and certain steel and aluminum derivatives. VOCM's Linda Swain has more.
- 3:21Speaker 2: The premier says the tariffs amount to an economic attack
- 3:24Speaker 2: that threatens key industries, increases costs, and creates uncertainty for
- 3:29Speaker 2: workers and business. Wakeham says those measures have real consequences
- 3:32Speaker 2: for Canadian families, businesses, and communities that rely on cross-border trade.
- 3:37Speaker 2: The Premier says he's reached out to key industry partners
- 3:40Speaker 2: to track the impacts of Canada's response to the trade
- 3:43Speaker 2: war and ensure that the interests of Newfoundland and Labrador workers,
- 3:47Speaker 2: businesses and communities are protected. Wakeham says the supports announced
- 3:51Speaker 2: by the federal government yesterday will help affected workers and
- 3:54Speaker 2: the province will be reviewing the measures in detail to
- 3:57Speaker 2: ensure that Newfoundland and Labrador receives the support it needs
- 4:00Speaker 2: to protect jobs and communities.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Meanwhile, there are growing calls for the provincial government to
- 4:05Speaker 1: reconvene its trade roundtable following the breakdown in talks between
- 4:09Speaker 1: Canada and the U.S. Former Premier Andrew Furey first put
- 4:13Speaker 1: the roundtable together not long after Donald Trump was sworn
- 4:16Speaker 1: into office. But Jessica McCormick, the president of the NL
- 4:19Speaker 1: Federation of Labor, says that group has not met since
- 4:22Speaker 1: the PCs took office last fall.
- 4:25Speaker 4: And I believe that it's a missed opportunity. So I'm
- 4:29Speaker 4: looking to him to bring stakeholders together to share information
- 4:32Speaker 4: and to talk to us about how he plans to respond.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Both the official opposition and the NDP are also calling
- 4:40Speaker 1: for the roundtable to be reconvened. VOCM News has reached
- 4:44Speaker 1: out to the premier's office for comment. The price of
- 4:48Speaker 1: all fuels is down this morning. Gas drops by about
- 4:51Speaker 1: two and a half cents. Diesel is down by more
- 4:54Speaker 1: than eight cents per liter. Furnace oil drops by seven cents,
- 4:58Speaker 1: while stove oil is down by seven and a half cents.
- 5:02Speaker 1: That's your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
