Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Hello and welcome back to the Aligned Actor Podcast.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: I'm Amy Schloerb,
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: your friendly neighborhood actor buddy,
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: your pal,
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: ready to help you thrive as an actor and live your full actor life.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: I am also a mindfulness and mindset coach,
- 0:14so I know a thing or two about helping us thrive mentally and
- 0:18emotionally,
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: and I have tons of ideas and inspirations,
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: practical tools,
- 0:24and things that we can do and implement in our lives so that we
- 0:27can live full
- 0:29wonderful actor lives despite what the entertainment industry
- 0:33might try to throw at
- 0:33us despite all of the roller coaster ride of actor-ness that we
- 0:39find ourselves on
- 0:40all the ups and downs all the twists and turns never know
- 0:43what's coming next
- 0:44sometimes there are jump scares they come out of nowhere and
- 0:47that's why they're
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: called jump scares
- 0:49We're here to talk about the stuff that matters and we are here
- 0:53to help us all live
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: full,
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: wonderful,
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: thriving actor lives.
- 0:59So last week we talked about letting yourself want to book the
- 1:05role because chances
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: are you want to book that role.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: You're an actor,
- 1:11so of course you would have a very basic desire to book a role
- 1:17when an audition
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: comes in.
- 1:20And I talked about how acknowledging your want can actually
- 1:25help you stay focused
- 1:26on what your character wants because you have these two things
- 1:30and you say,
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: hey,
- 1:31this is here and this is here and I know that they're both here
- 1:35and then I'm going
- 1:36to use mindfulness to be able to stay focused on the want that
- 1:40matters right now in
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: this audition,
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: which is what the character wants.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: And so often as actors, we're instructed to not think about booking.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: Not want to book.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Don't think about booking.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: Don't think about doing a good job.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Don't think about what casting wants.
- 2:00But if I tell you,
- 2:03don't think about an elephant,
- 2:06what's the only thing you're thinking about?
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: But no, no, no.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: Stop.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: Stop thinking about the elephant.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Don't think about the elephant.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: Let go of the elephant.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: You're probably not going to book the elephant anyway.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: And now all you can think about is the damn elephant.
- 2:22You're seeing its big ears and its floppy trunk and its cute
- 2:26little swishy tail.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: And today, what I want us to practice is, oh, look, there's an elephant.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: I see it.
- 2:40it's right there and it makes sense that it would exist in this
- 2:43space in this time
- 2:45because yes it's there and it makes sense in this context and
- 2:52oh look there's what
- 2:55my character wants both of these things exist in this time and
- 2:59space and it makes
- 3:00sense that they both exist in this time and space because I'm
- 3:03doing an audition but
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: now instead of
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: just looking at the elephant and staring at the elephant constantly,
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: I'm going to train myself to focus on what my character wants.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: The elephant's still there.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: It's okay that the elephant is still there.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: I like the elephant.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: It's a nice looking elephant.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: Good for you.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: You stay over there, elephant.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: I'm staying here with what my character wants.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: Something like that.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: Because both the actor want, what we want as an actor,
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: and what our character wants.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: They both exist in our present moment.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: And then through mindfulness,
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: we can acknowledge our want,
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: that elephant that's there,
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: without resisting it and without attaching to it.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: So we're not going to go jump on top of the elephant and ride it around.
- 3:57We're going to let it be where it is in nature,
- 4:01doing its own elephant things.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: And we're going to stay with what our character wants.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: That acknowledging non-attached space of,
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: hey,
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: there's the elephant,
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: let's let it stay over there,
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: but it can roam around and eat grass.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: I don't know what elephants eat.
- 4:21That space of non-attachment,
- 4:25it frees us up to more easily focus on the character want.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: So that's what we're going to practice this week.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: I have a guided audio that is going to help you get out of your head,
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: stop focusing purely on the elephant.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: You're going to acknowledge the elephant,
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: that the elephant is there,
- 4:44but you're going to stay focused cleanly and directly on what
- 4:49your character wants.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Okay,
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: so to make the most of this audio that I have for you today,
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: you're going to need a couple of things.
- 4:55You're going to need a scene because you've got to be doing the
- 4:58acting thing.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: and this could be any kind of scene.
- 5:00This could be an actual audition scene where that elephant is
- 5:04actually the elephant
- 5:05of I want to book this job or it could be a class scene where
- 5:10the elephant might be
- 5:11I want to impress my teacher or I want to deepen my craft in
- 5:16this specific way or
- 5:18it could be something for a self-tape May where you're like I
- 5:21want to get as many
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: likes and comments about I'm good at this type of thing.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: I don't know what you want but you need to know
- 5:29and think about what do you want as an actor and just
- 5:33acknowledge that,
- 5:34right?
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: We're just acknowledging it.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: We're letting it be okay that as an actor,
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: we want certain things that are different from what our character wants.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: So then for this scene, you also have to know what your character wants.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: You have to do your basic actor prep work.
- 5:51So once you've done all that standard basic actor prep work,
- 5:55what does my character want?
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: What's going on for them in this scene?
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: What's at stake for them if they don't get what they want?
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Stuff like that.
- 6:02You can then use this audio to help you get present and stay
- 6:06focused on the
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: character want rather than the elephant want.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: I hope this analogy is making sense.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: I hope you all like elephants.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Now,
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: I originally wrote this audio with auditions in mind,
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: so the actor want,
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: the elephant in this audio,
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: is we're acknowledging wanting to book the job.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: But if you're using it for classwork,
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: if you're using it for self-tape May,
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: if you're using it for some scene you've already booked,
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: like I said,
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: adjust your want accordingly so that you can suit those circumstances.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: Just go ahead and think about what do you want as an actor.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Now, you probably haven't thought about that in a while,
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: because, or it's subconscious, right?
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: You know like subconsciously like, I want to book this.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: I want to book this sucker.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: But you haven't let yourself acknowledge it.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: So go ahead and do that little bit of work of like,
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: okay,
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: what do I want in doing this scene as an actor?
- 7:09And then also for your actual acting prep work,
- 7:13well,
- 7:13what does my character want?
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: Because those two things are different.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: Obviously, we've been talking about this ad nauseum.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: And again, it's okay to want anything that you want as an actor.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: You're a human being.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: You're allowed to want whatever you want.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: And I promise you are not egotistical.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: You are not self-centered.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: You are not narcissistic.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: Even if what you want is related to like the end product of that scene,
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: that tape,
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: that audition,
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: that
- 7:51uh you know whatever that work is even if what you want is you
- 7:57know wanting other
- 7:58people to respond positively to your work even if what you want
- 8:01is uh you know hey
- 8:04a nice job that was good work it's okay to want that and the
- 8:10less time you spend
- 8:11resisting that want making making that want feel shameful or
- 8:15bad or mean something
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: bad about you as an actor
- 8:18the easier it's going to be to just feel comfortable in being
- 8:25an actor and also to
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: stay focused on the work at hand,
- 8:29what the actual want of your character in the scene and the
- 8:31work that they're doing
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: in the scene to get what they want.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: You're a human.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: You care about your work.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: You want to do your job well.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: So those human actor wants, that elephant
- 8:47is as much a part of your present moment of doing that scene as
- 8:52your character want.
- 8:55And now what we get to do is practice staying focused on what
- 8:59the character wants
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: because that's what serves us best in that moment.
- 9:06And that's honestly what's going to help us get the elephant
- 9:10want,
- 9:12most likely.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: Because again,
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: Unless you're playing an actor filming a scene of some kind,
- 9:22your character probably is not thinking about this moment that
- 9:27they're in and what
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: it looks like to an audience.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: They're not thinking about,
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: hey,
- 9:32is this moment where I'm explaining my symptoms to the ER
- 9:37doctor gonna get me a
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: job?
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: No, they want to
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: Scandalous!
- 10:09I'm going to make you actually go over to my Substack and access
- 10:13it there because
- 10:15that way you can you can we can keep talking about other stuff
- 10:20and the podcast
- 10:21doesn't get too long because you know me I like to ramble and
- 10:25go off on tangents
- 10:26and say lots of stuff so we're not going to actually practice
- 10:31it here live on the
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: podcast if you're finding this video on YouTube
- 10:35or if you're just watching it on Substack you got to scroll down
- 10:39a little bit do a
- 10:40little bit of work with your finger to get to where the audio
- 10:45is and listen to that
- 10:46after we finish up what we're doing here or if you're getting
- 10:50this on you're
- 10:51getting on YouTube or a podcast platform of some kind I will
- 10:54make sure that a link
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: to theSubstack article is in that
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: show notes,
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: description,
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: whatever,
- 11:01so that you can easily get over here and be on Substack with me
- 11:05right now so that
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: you can find this clip.
- 11:09It looks like a little embedded audio clip and it's eight
- 11:12minutes and 13 seconds
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: long and it's pretty awesome.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: And if you want to be able to download a copy of it,
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: I have a link on the Substack for you to be able to do that as well.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: So you can do that too if you want to.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: and I want you to put this into good use in your actor life.
- 11:31And I have a great idea for how you can start putting it to
- 11:35good use in your actor life.
- 11:38I want you to start practicing with it for self-tape May if
- 11:42you're participating in
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: self-tape May.
- 11:44And if you're not participating in self-tape May,
- 11:46you should be participating in self-tape May.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: Not should.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: You could.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: You could participate in self-tape May if you're an actor.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: For those of you who aren't familiar with self-tape May,
- 11:56It is a completely free challenge that was created by Audrey
- 12:00Moore of the Audrey
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: Helps Actors podcast.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: That is a fantastic podcast for actors.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: It's great.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: It's lovely.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: I can't say enough good things about it.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: And you should check that out.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: And also,
- 12:12I put a link in the Substack article for where you can find the
- 12:17Self Tape May
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: Challenge.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: I'll link up to her podcast.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: She's great.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: Go...
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: If you don't know Audrey already, go...
- 12:25go be introduced to Audrey and bask in her greatness so now the
- 12:31self-tape part for
- 12:32those who aren't familiar refers to the self-tape part of
- 12:35self-tape may refers to
- 12:37the self-recorded auditions that tv and film actors
- 12:42particularly in the United
- 12:43States although I don't know it might be international at this
- 12:46point too I've
- 12:48I would guess I'm not 100% sure on that though so anyway it's
- 12:52these recorded
- 12:53auditions that we send to casting directors to book jobs get
- 12:58work and the challenge
- 13:00of Self Tape May was born out of the goal of improving that
- 13:04particular skill set so
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: being able to put up a camera a backdrop lights
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: Film yourself,
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: figure out your eyeline with your reader,
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 13:16get all that technical stuff going and then actually free
- 13:21yourself up to act and be
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: in the scene and do all the stuff that you do.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: So it was about creating a regular,
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: sustainable,
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: practice of that particular skill set.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: But the bigger sort of goal of the whole thing, I think,
- 13:38is just a regular sustainable acting practice and audition
- 13:44practice and skill
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: practice kind of of anything.
- 13:50So depending on your market,
- 13:51depending on the type of acting that you engage in most
- 13:55frequently,
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: You know, you could practice, you don't have to tape everything.
- 14:02If that doesn't work for wherever you are in your career or for
- 14:05what you do as an
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: actor,
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: you could do a bunch of voiceovers.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: You could do just monologues to your cat.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: It doesn't have to necessarily be taped.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: The whole point is to be practicing
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: your craft regularly.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: Now,
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: if you want to participate in the challenge,
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: there are specific rules around like it does have to be taped.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: It has to be uploaded to Instagram.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: You have to use a hashtag.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: If any of the material has not aired yet, you have to mute it.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: That's a big one.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: All the rules are on the website for Self Tapemay.
- 14:41SPEAKER_00: I think it's SelfTapemay.net.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: And again,
- 14:44I have it linked in the in the Substack article and you can go
- 14:47and find out more
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: there.
- 14:50um so yeah so but additionally that was kind of a big caveat or
- 14:55big not caveat big
- 14:56like tangent on self-tape may itself just in case anybody
- 14:59didn't know about it um
- 15:01additionally as part of your self-tape may you can also be
- 15:06practicing all the
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: wonderful beautiful mindfulness and mindset stuff
- 15:11that I talk about week after week after week after week here on
- 15:17thisSubstack and on
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: Instagram and anywhere else that anybody will listen to me.
- 15:23So the ideas here that we go over and over and over and over
- 15:27again about the stuff
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: that's going to support your full actor life.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: So for example,
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: you can practice with the audio that I gave you in theSubstack this week
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: so that you can feel more comfortable acknowledging the elephant,
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: acknowledging your desire to book,
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: and then noticing,
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: ooh,
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: I'm really fixated on that elephant,
- 15:55but I'm gonna make myself focus over here mindfully using all
- 16:01of the notice and
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: then refocus techniques that we employ in mindfulness in general.
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: So you can use that audio.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: Use that audio before every self-tape that you do.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: Or maybe you just use it before,
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: if you're doing a bunch in a day,
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: maybe you use it once and then you're like,
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: okay,
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: I get it.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: I remember the basics here.
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: I know what I need to be doing.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: And then it helps you with the rest of them.
- 16:26I also think it'd be great to practice finding three to five
- 16:30moments that you like
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: in each tape that you make for self-tape Mae.
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: so that you're training your inner biggest fan.
- 16:40We talked about that biggest fan energy in a previous Substack
- 16:46and the idea of
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: making that one louder,
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: that voice in your head louder,
- 16:51that positive voice in your head louder than your inner critic
- 16:55because your inner
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: critic has a lot of opinions that honestly it should just keep to itself.
- 17:02because your inner monologue plays a really crucial role in
- 17:06your motivation and
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: your confidence and your general mindset.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: So be practicing, hey, I just did this tape.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: I really like that moment.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: I really like how I did that.
- 17:18I really liked that I was playful and carefree and that that
- 17:22moment was completely surprising.
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: I really like that.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: So practice finding things that you like in each tape so that you
- 17:31Amp up the voice of your inner biggest fan and you quiet down
- 17:36that inner critic
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: that needs to just sit down in the corner and shut up.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: Also, let's see here.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, okay.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: I would love you to be practicing trusting that each tape you complete is
- 17:54increasing your reputation in the entertainment industry
- 17:57regardless of the result.
- 17:59so that you can get better at moving on more easily after every
- 18:05audition.
- 18:07So you put it up online and you trust,
- 18:10hey,
- 18:11this is out there in the world.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: If someone important is supposed to see it,
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: they're going to see it and my reputation is going up.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: That's great.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: And if that's not the goal,
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: that's not what happens with that tape because,
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: not necessarily about it being seen,
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: But just, hey, I improved this skill.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: I practiced this skill.
- 18:32I therefore am improving my reputation in the business just as
- 18:37an actor by
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: improving my skill set by practicing.
- 18:41I would also love for you to be practicing daily mindfulness
- 18:45meditation so that you
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: can calm your mind and your body.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: and restore your energy.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: Because believe me,
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: if you're going to do 16 tapes,
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: because that's the number to hit,
- 18:59SPEAKER_00: that's the goal that we aim for in Self Tape May,
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: 16 tapes takes a lot of energy.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: And you are going to need energy.
- 19:09And one of the ways that you can get energy is through that
- 19:13restorative process of
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: mindfulness meditation.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: And I have a ton of mindfulness meditations for you
- 19:20scattered throughout my Substack and I will be putting out more
- 19:26I think during
- 19:27Self-Type May and I can link up some in the Substack article as
- 19:31well so that you
- 19:32have easy peasy handy dandy access to simple mindfulness
- 19:38meditations that you can
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: use and that are pretty quick and also if you need one that
- 19:47that you just need like you're about you don't want to listen
- 19:50to like a whole five
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: minute or ten minute thing.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: Here's what I recommend that you do.
- 19:55You're going to count your breaths,
- 19:57your inhales and your exhales up to ten.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: You're going to count one on the inhale,
- 20:03SPEAKER_00: two on the exhale,
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: three on the inhale,
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: four on the exhale,
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: five,
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: six,
- 20:16Seven Eight Nine Ten And that is a really easy way to quickly
- 20:41lower your heart rate
- 20:44SPEAKER_00: Access the present moment,
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: find yourself here in this space,
- 20:51and then be ready to get into whatever it is that's going on in
- 20:55the scene.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: And finally,
- 21:00practicing mindfulness meditation daily is also going to help
- 21:07you feel present in
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: your full actor life.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: It's going to help you feel more comfortable living
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: and engaging in the life of an actor.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: You're going to become less reactive to things and more responsive,
- 21:20become more looking at things more kindly about yourself and
- 21:25about the industry
- 21:27with more curiosity and compassion and being able to ride the
- 21:32highs and lows of the
- 21:33SPEAKER_00: actor roller coaster with calm,
- 21:36SPEAKER_00: confident resilience instead of throwing up.
- 21:42SPEAKER_00: which is really, really important.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: So mindfulness helps you restore your energy,
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: calming your body,
- 21:49SPEAKER_00: getting you present to do that actual tape.
- 21:52And then it also helps you in your bigger,
- 21:55wider,
- 21:56grander,
- 21:58actor life in general.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: So these are really, really good things.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: So those are just a couple of ideas that you could put into place,
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: things that you can be practicing during self-tape may.
- 22:12related to like your mindset and things and now finally I just
- 22:15want to launch us in
- 22:19some kind of inspiring way kind of like a rallying cry or a
- 22:24coach locker room
- 22:27rah-rah speech type of thing I want to launch us into Self Tape
- 22:31May and to do that
- 22:32I have a quote from Martha Graham the famed dancer teacher and
- 22:36choreographer
- 22:38and I love this quote so much because it transcends dance and
- 22:43it really speaks to
- 22:44art of all kinds like literally any kind of artist or artistic
- 22:48life or creative
- 22:49life it speaks to that and it's honestly the perfect mindset to
- 22:54embody for
- 22:55self-tape May and for your entire actor life so I'm going to go
- 22:59ahead and read this
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: to you now there is a vitality
- 23:05A life force,
- 23:07an energy,
- 23:08a quickening that is translated through you into action.
- 23:13And because there is only one of you in all of time,
- 23:16this expression is unique.
- 23:19And if you block it,
- 23:21it will never exist through any other medium and it will be
- 23:25lost.
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: The world will not have it.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: It is not your business to determine how good it is,
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: nor how valuable,
- 23:35SPEAKER_00: nor how it compares with other expressions.
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: It is your business to keep it yours, clearly and directly.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: Keep the channel open.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: You have to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that motivate you
- 24:01SPEAKER_00: Keep the channel open.
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: No artist is pleased.
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: There is no satisfaction whatever at any time.
- 24:13SPEAKER_00: There is only a queer divine dissatisfaction,
- 24:18a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive
- 24:24than the others.
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: So happy Self Tape May.
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: I'm so excited to do this with you.
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: If you're doing it, I'm doing it.
- 24:35I'm going to have more Self Tape May content coming for you
- 24:38throughout May because
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: I think it's just fun to be part of that community and talk about stuff.

- 24:59SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: however you've accessed this material,
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: my name is spelled correctly there.
- 25:04Unless you're reading a transcript,

- 25:07kind of wonky.
