- 0:05SPEAKER_03: What's up, everybody?
- 0:06SPEAKER_03: Welcome to another episode of the bottom line on sports.
- 0:10SPEAKER_03: I'm Jean-Jacques Taylor.
- 0:12SPEAKER_03: He's Jeremy Pink.
- 0:13SPEAKER_03: And this is our show.
- 0:15SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 0:16SPEAKER_03: I've been up all night.
- 0:18SPEAKER_03: This is our show where the intersection of sports and money connect.
- 0:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I was trying, I was trying to like, you know, acknowledge you know myself, but anyway.
- 0:27SPEAKER_03: Well, I screwed up again because it's good.
- 0:31SPEAKER_02: That was me doing you know something that had unintended consequences as usual.
- 0:35SPEAKER_02: That's fine.
- 0:36SPEAKER_03: And you know, we like to start every show with a little number, but first you need to subscribe, rate, and review five stars only.
- 0:43SPEAKER_03: Uh otherwise, we'll send Guido and Luigi to come look for you.
- 0:47SPEAKER_03: Uh the number this week.
- 0:50SPEAKER_02: The number this week is three point one million dollars.
- 0:54SPEAKER_02: And that number, Mr.
- 0:55SPEAKER_02: Taylor, is a cheap current.
- 0:58SPEAKER_02: Say again, the checks I'm cutting you.
- 1:01SPEAKER_02: You you could I'll cut you the check.
- 1:03SPEAKER_02: I just wouldn't cash it, you know.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: Uh the the three point one million dollar number is the winning purse that the Kentucky Derby winner will take home this year, that the owner will take home.
- 1:14SPEAKER_02: 3.1 million.
- 1:15SPEAKER_03: And I feel bad.
- 1:16SPEAKER_03: The Kentucky Derby, the fastest two minutes in sports, is this weekend.
- 1:20SPEAKER_03: It's first Saturday in May.
- 1:22SPEAKER_03: I didn't know that until like I think yesterday.
- 1:26SPEAKER_03: And I felt bad because it seems like I should know when the Derby is coming up.
- 1:30SPEAKER_03: And ironically enough, I talked to somebody this weekend, he's a retired NFL coach, and I said, Hey, so what are you doing with your life these days?
- 1:39SPEAKER_03: And you know what he told me?
- 1:41SPEAKER_03: He said, I'm in the horses.
- 1:42SPEAKER_03: I said, Really?
- 1:43SPEAKER_03: He's like, Yeah, I got one good one and a bunch of nags.
- 1:46SPEAKER_03: Um, and he said he had some horse that won a stakes race, and then we started talking about horses, and uh for whatever reason, after that, that's when I found out that the Derby was this week.
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: So are you gonna watch it or not?
- 2:00SPEAKER_03: Okay, I do I say this about the Derby every week every year.
- 2:04SPEAKER_03: If I remember to be by TV at five o'clock, I'll watch it.
- 2:09SPEAKER_03: The odds of me remembering to be by a TV at five o'clock are slim, but it could happen.
- 2:15SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: So did you did you think the$3.1 million was a lot or a little, or you didn't really have any gauge?
- 2:22SPEAKER_03: I didn't really have a good gauge for it because now here's what's interesting to me.
- 2:28SPEAKER_03: When I started at the Dallas Morning News in 1992, horse racing was a big deal.
- 2:35SPEAKER_03: Like we had a beat rider for horse racing.
- 2:39SPEAKER_03: Uh name was Randy West, Gary West, Randy Moss.
- 2:44SPEAKER_03: No, it's Randy Moss.
- 2:45SPEAKER_03: Uh, matter of fact, you may have seen him on ESPN song.
- 2:48SPEAKER_03: Um, but he covered horse racing.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:51SPEAKER_03: And our boss, our sports editor, the great Dave Smith, who changed the way sports sections work in America, he was big into horse racing.
- 2:59SPEAKER_03: And when Dallas got a horse track like 20 years ago, dude, it was like some of the biggest news ever, maybe 25 years ago.
- 3:08SPEAKER_03: And so I've been around horses in terms of I understand it, but it seems like such an old man sport that it just uh I never I never really got into it.
- 3:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: I I understand that, and you and you're right, the demographics of the sport are skewing older.
- 3:24SPEAKER_02: I bet if you looked at the demographics of the sport 20 years ago and they said the average viewer was 45 years old.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: I think if you look at the sports today, it's 65.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: Um, but so I was surprised by the I thought 3.1 million was low for for like a winner, winner, or you know, the the winner.
- 3:44SPEAKER_03: That's the whole purse.
- 3:44SPEAKER_03: So, like, what's the winner?
- 3:46SPEAKER_02: The whole the whole purse is 5 million, which I think is really small.
- 3:49SPEAKER_02: You know, that's like that's like three games for SGA, I think.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: You know, that's really small.
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: And and you know, and then the biggest purse is something called the breeders' cup, which is at 7 million.
- 4:00SPEAKER_02: Uh, but but it it tells you that what the real value of the derby is uh that the amount of money gambled on the derby is is incredible.
- 4:11SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, that's that's where money is really made on the you know, in relation to the derby.
- 4:16SPEAKER_03: How do you know based off of the purse?
- 4:19SPEAKER_02: Well, no, no.
- 4:20SPEAKER_02: I I just the amount of money, so the amount the the there's a there's a measure of the amount of money that's gambled in you know in every horse race.
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: And this one's in hundreds, this is in the hundreds of millions of dollars, which is an enormous amount of money for for it's not an enormous amount of money, but it's a significant amount of money for a single event, particularly to your point when it's horse racing.
- 4:41SPEAKER_02: And I would guess that if I walked out on the streets of New York tomorrow and I asked 10 people when's a Kentucky Derby, three at maximum might know when it is.
- 4:52SPEAKER_02: Like I would say five maximum would know it's a horse race.
- 4:56SPEAKER_03: No, I I got you.
- 4:57SPEAKER_03: It's uh I feel I feel kind of like that.
- 4:59SPEAKER_03: I was trying to figure out that um like like I don't even know if like there's some horse we're supposed to be watching, like C Biscuit or Secretarian.
- 5:09SPEAKER_03: Is there just is there some badass horse that's gonna be in this in this race?
- 5:13SPEAKER_03: That would not know until the race is over.
- 5:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, it's I I don't know.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: Uh I don't I don't know.
- 5:19SPEAKER_02: I I haven't not looked into it.
- 5:20SPEAKER_02: I only looked into the the money side of it, but I was just good.
- 5:25SPEAKER_03: And I was gonna say you're right because this is the kind of race I would bet on, knowing nothing.
- 5:30SPEAKER_03: I'd be like, I like that dude's silks, that purple and gold, I'll rock with that.
- 5:34SPEAKER_03: Give me uh three dollars to win, two dollars to place, and one dollar to show.
- 5:38SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 5:39SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 5:40SPEAKER_02: Um, but it's uh you know, in the accessibility of sports gambling now is so much greater that uh, you know, I so I I it'll be I I I didn't look at it, but I I I'll I'll look at like the ratings, television ratings over the last five years, and I bet you'll see a growth in viewership that's sort of commensurate with the growth in sports gambling as well.
- 6:01SPEAKER_02: Maybe not perfectly in lockstep, but I bet you it's directionally the same.
- 6:05SPEAKER_03: Oh no, that's I think that's a really good point.
- 6:07SPEAKER_03: And I bet you're right.
- 6:08SPEAKER_03: Um, I want to know who's the favorite to win the derby.
- 6:11SPEAKER_03: Who do you who do you like?
- 6:13SPEAKER_02: U yeah, I I like I I have no I have no idea who's who's running in the derby, you know.
- 6:18SPEAKER_02: Uh I just remember there's a horse about 15, 20 years ago named Big Brown.
- 6:23SPEAKER_02: That's the only horse that I remember recently.
- 6:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:25SPEAKER_03: Okay, here we go.
- 6:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, okay.
- 6:28SPEAKER_03: Renegade is a favorite, four to one.
- 6:31SPEAKER_03: Uh-huh.
- 6:32SPEAKER_03: Common commandment is six to one.
- 6:35SPEAKER_03: Further ado, six to one, chief wallaby, eight to one, and the puma is ten to one.
- 6:41SPEAKER_03: So there's the puma.
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 6:44SPEAKER_02: I I understand.
- 6:44SPEAKER_02: I like that name.
- 6:45SPEAKER_02: But it sounds to me like there isn't a clear favorite then.
- 6:47SPEAKER_02: You've got a lot of you've got a lot of horses clustered in four, six, and eight to one, which makes me think it's there's not a clear favorite.
- 6:54SPEAKER_02: Could be could be like, you know, the likelihood then is that we may see a horse emerge out of this and really make a run for the triple crown, or you might see, you know, you know, a sea of you know, kind of comparable horses and it becomes boring, you know.
- 7:10SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, I just like the brown ones with the diamond on the forehead.
- 7:13SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 7:15SPEAKER_02: It's all it's all good.
- 7:16SPEAKER_02: Uh but yeah, yeah, the cockader is is a great, it's a great spectacle, it's a great race.
- 7:21SPEAKER_03: Uh you know what?
- 7:22SPEAKER_03: You've convinced me.
- 7:23SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna watch it this weekend.
- 7:24SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna I'm gonna put it.
- 7:26SPEAKER_03: I've got a uh I haven't I've been so busy working on my project.
- 7:30SPEAKER_03: I've got a hundred-inch screen that I only watch special events on.
- 7:34SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna turn the derby on that and turn this around sound all the way up and capture those two minutes right there.
- 7:40SPEAKER_03: I've decided just right now, that's what I'm gonna do at like 5.04 on Saturday.
- 7:45SPEAKER_02: So so no no, it's at oh yeah, Central Time.
- 7:49SPEAKER_02: I think it actually starts at around 6:40 Central.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: No, I'm sorry, 640 Eastern time.
- 7:57SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 7:57SPEAKER_02: 6:40 Eastern time.
- 7:59SPEAKER_03: Okay, 6:45.
- 8:01SPEAKER_02: But but I have just just so you know, I have uh I'm having dinner uh with one of my best friends from uh one of my best friends who I like from from Duke and uh not not from Iowa State, but uh and I I made the dinner at 7 and I'm getting there at making sure I get to the restaurant at about 6:45 so I can watch the race on my phone and then have dinner.
- 8:25SPEAKER_02: That's my plan.
- 8:26SPEAKER_03: Uh simulcast, approximately 5 30.
- 8:28SPEAKER_02: 5 30.
- 8:29SPEAKER_02: Okay, so I need to get there earlier.
- 8:30SPEAKER_02: Okay, that's probably Eastern.
- 8:32SPEAKER_02: Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:33SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 8:33SPEAKER_03: Now we've solved all the derby issues.
- 8:36SPEAKER_03: 3.1 million the person, that's our number for the day.
- 8:39SPEAKER_03: Let's move on to another interesting number, which is um, as I was curious, the NFL draft last week.
- 8:46SPEAKER_03: Uh, and you know, you can bitch and moan and complain about the NFL, but I gotta tell you, that machine knows how to make money.
- 8:57SPEAKER_03: So, you know, for years and years and years, like, how do you think this meeting went?
- 9:02SPEAKER_03: For years and years and years, the draft is in New York City, at Madison Square Garden.
- 9:07SPEAKER_03: And one day in one meeting, somebody said, Hey, what if we had this draft somewhere else, some other city?
- 9:15SPEAKER_03: Do you think people would show up?
- 9:17SPEAKER_03: And somebody said, Well, I don't know what kind of loser would show up for a draft.
- 9:23SPEAKER_03: And somebody else said, I don't know, it's a chance of getting here, you know, there's everybody's feeling hopeful because the draft is like spring flowers, everybody's got hope for the next season.
- 9:33SPEAKER_03: I think uh we could make a big deal out of it.
- 9:36SPEAKER_03: Okay, let's ask uh Roger if if that sounds like a good idea.
- 9:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and now every year the draft is somewhere different, man, and it's like the biggest spectacle ever.
- 9:46SPEAKER_02: It's a huge, it's a huge event.
- 9:47SPEAKER_02: It was a record number.
- 9:48SPEAKER_02: I was I can't I I wrote down the number and I can't find it now, but it was like a record crowd that attended this event.
- 9:54SPEAKER_02: And you know what the entrance, you know what it costs to get into this event.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: You see that look on my face?
- 10:00SPEAKER_02: Nothing.
- 10:00SPEAKER_03: Oh, I was gonna say, I didn't know people were paying.
- 10:02SPEAKER_02: No, no, no.
- 10:03SPEAKER_02: But for the view of these huge crowds, and people are showing up.
- 10:06SPEAKER_02: I I oh I was gonna tell you what they're doing, though.
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: I I can't imagine.
- 10:10SPEAKER_02: What are the tell me what they're doing?
- 10:11SPEAKER_03: Okay, what they're see.
- 10:13SPEAKER_03: This is this again, this is genius.
- 10:15SPEAKER_03: This is like uh, what's what's the two dollar wine at two buck two buck chuck at Trader Joe's?
- 10:21SPEAKER_03: This is like two buck chuck at Trader Joe's.
- 10:23SPEAKER_03: You don't have to pay anything to come to the draft.
- 10:27SPEAKER_03: Nothing.
- 10:28SPEAKER_03: Come on down, have a great time.
- 10:31SPEAKER_03: But we got your favorite team hat logo there for$85.
- 10:36SPEAKER_03: Uh-huh.
- 10:36SPEAKER_03: We got golf shirts, we got jerseys.
- 10:38SPEAKER_03: Hey, I saw this on TV or somewhere.
- 10:41SPEAKER_03: Not only can you get it, but you can get a hat, and they got like an embroiderer there.
- 10:46SPEAKER_03: You can sit your first your name on the hat or your first round jersey.
- 10:50SPEAKER_02: Like so smart.
- 10:52SPEAKER_03: So, yeah, come for free, hang out, have a great time.
- 10:55SPEAKER_03: We'll get you$14 for an eight-ounce beer, you know,$27 for a slice of pizza.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:00SPEAKER_03: And I don't really mind it, man, because I'm all for uh economic growth and development and impact.
- 11:08SPEAKER_03: And what they bring in, a couple hundred thousand in the city of Pittsburgh.
- 11:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, some some crazy number.
- 11:13SPEAKER_02: Uh, there was a it was a record number who watched the draft.
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: And you know, I was looking at economic impact over cities over the last couple of years, and they're they're essentially suggesting that the the economic impact to a city that hosts a draft could be upwards of 200 to 250 million dollars over the weekend.
- 11:31SPEAKER_02: So you've got cities, so you've got cities clamoring to do this now.
- 11:36SPEAKER_03: You make more money because what everybody's got to bid for it now.
- 11:40SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, and and uh you know, we're in Green Bay last year, Pittsburgh.
- 11:44SPEAKER_03: Where are they next year?
- 11:46SPEAKER_03: I can't remember.
- 11:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I can't remember, but I just can't believe that many people go because what do you what do you do?
- 11:53SPEAKER_02: What do you do there?
- 11:54SPEAKER_03: You know what happens, man?
- 11:56SPEAKER_03: It's it's the it just becomes an event.
- 11:58SPEAKER_03: It's like the place to be.
- 12:00SPEAKER_03: Because check it out, it's only gonna be here once.
- 12:03SPEAKER_03: Like, you know, if you if you go like when's the next time the draft's coming to Pittsburgh?
- 12:08SPEAKER_03: 20 years, yeah, because now everybody wants so it's gonna rotate around the country, yeah.
- 12:14SPEAKER_03: So it's it's an event, and again, you know, football, the draft, they've made a spectacle of the draft.
- 12:23SPEAKER_03: The draft's like this huge thing.
- 12:24SPEAKER_03: You got people have made millions predicting what players are good in the draft, and nobody cares if you're wrong.
- 12:31SPEAKER_03: So, you know, whether it's Joel Bushbaum, whether it's Mel Kuyper, whether it's Tommy Shea, all these people have made hundreds of thousands of millions of dollars on the draft because of the cottage industry.
- 12:41SPEAKER_03: And so you want to be there live in person when your team picks the next Hall of Famer, when your team picks the next Troy Aikman, the next Image Smith, the next Bruce Smith, you know, whoever, the next Franco Harris.
- 12:56SPEAKER_03: I'm dating myself with all these names.
- 12:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I just I just can't believe anybody would actually show up to this thing.
- 13:01SPEAKER_03: No, I would never do that.
- 13:02SPEAKER_02: I'm wrong, yeah.
- 13:04SPEAKER_03: But you know, sometimes uh I know for sure me, and you might be somewhat jaded too, although that's not really your personality to be jaded.
- 13:13SPEAKER_03: Uh-huh.
- 13:13SPEAKER_02: Oh no, never, never, yeah.
- 13:16SPEAKER_03: But again, I've been a sports reporter my entire life, really.
- 13:21SPEAKER_03: I'm talking about my whole life, I've been a sports reporter, whether I was in high school, whether I was in college, whether I was a professional, I've been a sports reporter.
- 13:29SPEAKER_03: So sometimes I can be jaundiced to the idea that people would say, what a great deal it is to just be in the midst.
- 13:36SPEAKER_03: Because, like, that's like going to work, dog.
- 13:38SPEAKER_03: Why would you do that?
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: Right, right, exactly.
- 13:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you know, I don't like crowds, I don't want, I don't want to congest, I don't want to do none of that.
- 13:45SPEAKER_03: Um, but if you're not around it all the time, it's a huge event.
- 13:50SPEAKER_03: It's like the Super Bowl.
- 13:52SPEAKER_03: People come to the Super Bowl just because it's an event, and you just want to be in the midst of the excitement, and you just want to be there.
- 13:59SPEAKER_03: But but nothing happens.
- 14:01SPEAKER_02: You know, there's an announcement of like 30 names, and I could anticipation, man.
- 14:07SPEAKER_02: I guess, I guess so.
- 14:08SPEAKER_02: I guess so.
- 14:08SPEAKER_02: But anyway, listen, I'm whatever the case is, I'm wrong.
- 14:10SPEAKER_02: I also don't I also don't like to be in like lots of other people talking to me at once.
- 14:15SPEAKER_02: So that I also don't like.
- 14:16SPEAKER_03: So it's uh it's a wild deal, but you know, it's a uh I think I think a lot of it is you get together with your boys and a four or five goals.
- 14:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:26SPEAKER_03: And again, it's just hope and hype, man.
- 14:28SPEAKER_03: Like, you know, because every every team that picks in the first round thinks that their guy is gonna be a Hall of Famer.
- 14:36SPEAKER_03: This is a guy who's either gonna get us over the top and we can win the Super Bowl because we're a playoff team next year, or this is a guy we stumped last year.
- 14:45SPEAKER_03: This is a guy that's gonna turn our franchise around and now we'll be good.
- 14:50SPEAKER_03: And it's uh it's all that hype and it's all the buildup.
- 14:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, listen, it brings it it brings in big it brings in big money, it gets uh, you know, very uh it gets decent television ratings, although I think this year's ratings were were down.
- 15:04SPEAKER_02: There wasn't that much intrigue in this year's draft.
- 15:06SPEAKER_03: I think you had, you know, yeah, but check out next year's draft.
- 15:09SPEAKER_02: Oh, next year's draft is gonna be crazy.
- 15:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's gonna be crazy.
- 15:12SPEAKER_03: It's gonna be it's gonna be wild.
- 15:13SPEAKER_03: And so it's uh you know, I think the economic development is cool because um think I always think about because I am one, I always think about the small business owner, you know, who whether they got whatever that is, they reap the benefit from that.
- 15:29SPEAKER_03: Maybe they had a food truck, maybe they had, and I'm not talking about just that event because people showed up for two days or three days.
- 15:36SPEAKER_03: For sure, for sure.
- 15:37SPEAKER_03: So it's the you know, you're walking around town, you're spending money over here, you spend money over there.
- 15:41SPEAKER_03: It's just a uh it's the way.
- 15:43SPEAKER_03: So, yeah, the NFL gets over, they made all the money, but it's good that the little guy can make a couple of dollars along the way uh when you bring something like this.
- 15:52SPEAKER_03: I agree.
- 15:53SPEAKER_02: Agree.
- 15:53SPEAKER_02: No, I think there's I think that that is because it's attracting such a crowd, it's it's good, it it has you know positive impact across the board, and particularly you're right, probably for some small business.
- 16:04SPEAKER_02: And also the difference between the NFL and other sports is the NFL is is truly NBA, maybe a little bit, but the NFL is truly a national sport, it's not a regional sport like like baseball.
- 16:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so so if Pittsburgh hosts it, the entire country is focused on Pittsburgh, and if Green Bay hosts it, the entire country is focused on Green Bay.
- 16:23SPEAKER_02: So that has also a visibility, uh, an image, potentially image building positive impact for the city.
- 16:29SPEAKER_02: So I get all that, and it makes a lot of sense, and it's great that it's a good event and it puts money in people's pockets.
- 16:35SPEAKER_02: I just can't imagine why anybody would go, you know.
- 16:38SPEAKER_02: But that's just me.
- 16:39SPEAKER_03: I was gonna say, but you still ain't going.
- 16:42SPEAKER_02: No way.
- 16:44SPEAKER_03: It's uh it's uh I think it's a cool deal, and um again, I'm like you, I wouldn't go, but I understand why people do go.
- 16:52SPEAKER_03: That's so the buttons the bottom line for me is the NFL draft, you bringing all that money in.
- 16:58SPEAKER_03: You know, I used to be a a um a bellman and I was a valet, and all those people got paid last week because the hotels are full, the restaurants are full, everybody's feeling good, the tips are better, and so I'm all for the little guy making money, and that's what it did, that's what it sounds like it did for me, and what it's doing for cities every time the draft comes.
- 17:18SPEAKER_02: Bottom line for me is there's no way I would ever attend a draft in person because I don't think anything happens.
- 17:25SPEAKER_02: However, I see I I guess I understand the appeal, but more importantly, I see the really positive economic impact it has for a city, and to your point, uh, some of the smaller vendors and businesses uh that surround the event.
- 17:40SPEAKER_03: All right, let's talk about the the next topic we have is a very depressing topic to me.
- 17:44SPEAKER_03: But I have an idea.
- 17:45SPEAKER_03: I wish they would do this idea.
- 17:47SPEAKER_03: This blew my mind, what I'm about to tell you.
- 17:50SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 17:51SPEAKER_03: And I don't know, I don't know.
- 17:53SPEAKER_03: Okay, let me just tell the story.
- 17:54SPEAKER_03: So, one of my first years covering uh high school sports in Ohio.
- 18:00SPEAKER_03: I'm from Texas, I go to Ohio State, I get a job, and I'm covering high school basketball for the Columbus Dispatch.
- 18:07SPEAKER_02: With who is who is your partner covering high school basketball?
- 18:10SPEAKER_02: This guy here.
- 18:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, me one Jeremy Pink.
- 18:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:13SPEAKER_03: And so I remember going to a district, some kind of meeting where they were going to determine who was going to play each other in the tournament.
- 18:23SPEAKER_03: And I walked in and I said, like, because I'm not from Ohio, I'm like, where's the bracket so I can da-da-da-da-da?
- 18:30SPEAKER_03: And it was a big meeting of all the coaches because in Ohio, at that particular time, everybody was eligible for the tournament.
- 18:39SPEAKER_03: And they put the bracket out, and however you were seated, you get to pick your spot on the bracket, which I was like, well, this is kind of cool.
- 18:49SPEAKER_03: So here's my thing.
- 18:52SPEAKER_03: I can't stand the fact that 76 teams are going to play now in the NCAA tournament.
- 18:58SPEAKER_03: That's going to be what it is next next year.
- 19:00SPEAKER_03: It's gonna be 76 teams.
- 19:01SPEAKER_03: Everybody's mama's in the tournament.
- 19:04SPEAKER_03: Who cares?
- 19:05SPEAKER_03: If you can't make the tournament, I want to hear not a narry single solitary word for their buttons.
- 19:11SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 19:12SPEAKER_03: That being said, why not just have an open bracket and everybody gets to uh one through 76, the teams are ranked by the committee, and you get to pick your spot on the bracket.
- 19:24SPEAKER_03: That'll make it exciting.
- 19:25SPEAKER_03: Because selection Sunday, dude, who cares?
- 19:28SPEAKER_03: Everybody's in.
- 19:29SPEAKER_02: Right, right.
- 19:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so it's selection Sunday becomes more, you're right.
- 19:33SPEAKER_02: Selection Sunday becomes about we know which bracket is stronger, excuse me, which bracket is stronger, which bracket is weaker, and we know is my team, you know, treated fairly or not.
- 19:44SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 19:45SPEAKER_02: But I think you bring up the sort of the most cogent point of this is that this to me is further devaluation and erosion of the meaning, meaningfulness of the regular season in college basketball.
- 19:58SPEAKER_02: But nobody watches college basketball regular season except you know on the local basis.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: You know, you watch your team.
- 20:06SPEAKER_02: Um, but the NCAA tournament, particularly the men's and the women's tournament these days, too, is actually you know attracting a pretty good audience.
- 20:14SPEAKER_02: Um, the men's tournament is a huge moneymaker.
- 20:17SPEAKER_02: So what they've done is just extended the window on the money-making piece of this and compressed the non-money-making piece of this.
- 20:25SPEAKER_02: And it makes total economic sense to me.
- 20:28SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna make you shed frontiers right now, from what I'm about to say.
- 20:35SPEAKER_03: This feels to me like private equity is taking over the turn.
- 20:40SPEAKER_02: Go ahead, get the frontiers out.
- 20:42SPEAKER_02: Actually, you know what this is?
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: This this is this is to me, this is actually showing that you've got it's not private equity, but you've got you've got conferences that are now driving most television deals and most decisions.
- 20:59SPEAKER_02: You've got conferences that are looking up and going, we gotta pay players now.
- 21:03SPEAKER_02: We got a lot of costs.
- 21:04SPEAKER_02: So we got to figure out how do we how do we pay everybody more?
- 21:07SPEAKER_02: How do we how to recoup our costs?
- 21:10SPEAKER_02: You know, an extra you know week or an extra few, you know, few days of NCAA tournament games, that's a good thing for us in the conferences, and we we need that in order to, you know, in order to keep this thing going.
- 21:21SPEAKER_02: So it's to me, that's who that's what this is for right now.
- 21:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 21:25SPEAKER_03: Oh no, see, I mean, and like the Big Ten, I think that I think the Big Ten has like 18 teams this year.
- 21:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's it's I think in the tournament next year.
- 21:35SPEAKER_03: The SEC has got whatever they have in teams they've got.
- 21:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they'll have 85% of their teams in the tournament next year.
- 21:41SPEAKER_03: And then, you know, all those teams get a get a get a a check for getting to the tournament, right?
- 21:47SPEAKER_03: Which is more money for the conference.
- 21:48SPEAKER_03: It's you know, and that's why I said it felt like a private equity play to me because somebody came in and took all the value out and took all the money.
- 21:56SPEAKER_02: Oh, right, right.
- 21:56SPEAKER_02: I see what you're saying.
- 21:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 21:58SPEAKER_02: I see what you're saying.
- 21:59SPEAKER_02: So we
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: Have a shell of what we know, but everybody got paid.
- 22:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 22:03SPEAKER_02: Um, you think that you think that highly of private equity.
- 22:07SPEAKER_02: That's good.
- 22:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 22:08SPEAKER_02: So uh but but uh but I understand your point.
- 22:11SPEAKER_02: That's a that's a very good analogy.
- 22:13SPEAKER_02: I I totally I totally understand your point.
- 22:16SPEAKER_02: It is uh I I just you know you get to a point where you reach a saturation level, and are you oversaturating it, or am I just crazy?
- 22:28SPEAKER_02: There, we're not gonna reach that saturation level.
- 22:31SPEAKER_03: I I mean here's the thing, and we saw it this year and we saw it last year.
- 22:37SPEAKER_03: Um, okay, you can have this tournament, okay.
- 22:39SPEAKER_03: You have 76 teams in there, but it feels like you correct me if I'm wrong, the age of Cinderella is over because the mid-major players who would be good, they're going, they get paid to go play for a real team, like Duke.
- 22:58SPEAKER_03: So, yes, like Duke.
- 23:01SPEAKER_03: Uh so you used to have a team like Butler or Gonzaga, yeah, or Val Paraiso that's got five seniors that have been playing together all for five for four years.
- 23:12SPEAKER_03: Everybody knows Red Road, they can run their offense with their eyes closed, and that team's a threat, George Mason.
- 23:17SPEAKER_03: And that's how you can wind up with a Cinderella making a run.
- 23:20SPEAKER_03: Well, that team would never stick together now because the best player is gonna go make, and I'm not mad at the best player, but the best player is gonna go make a million dollars and go play at Ohio State, or he's gonna make$750,000 to go play at Cincinnati, or whatever.
- 23:32SPEAKER_03: He ain't gonna play for you because you can only pay him, only pay him, you know,$200,000.
- 23:38SPEAKER_03: He's like, Coach Pink, I love you, man.
- 23:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Alabama's paying me$1.5.
- 23:43SPEAKER_03: I got to go.
- 23:44SPEAKER_03: Like, and it doesn't even matter.
- 23:46SPEAKER_03: Like, I saw a kid, and I know his dad, he's a he was a probably a four-star recruit.
- 23:53SPEAKER_03: He was a freshman, he may have even redshirted a year.
- 23:56SPEAKER_03: He may have.
- 23:58SPEAKER_03: Freshman role player had a really nice tournament.
- 24:02SPEAKER_03: He went from role player all season and had a really nice tournament.
- 24:07SPEAKER_03: Well, he left Texas to go to SMU.
- 24:11SPEAKER_03: Now, Texas, listen, I Texas, there's no comparison between Texas's program and SMU's program.
- 24:19SPEAKER_03: And he would have started in Texas last next year, but I'm sure SMU cut him a much bigger check, and he was like, I love the long horns, uh-huh.
- 24:30SPEAKER_03: But but the ponies, the ponies they playing at paper.
- 24:34SPEAKER_03: I got to go.
- 24:36SPEAKER_03: So uh, you know, I I ain't mad at him.
- 24:40SPEAKER_03: Congratulations, but that's why you won't get so you won't get any of these teams, these mid-majors that stick together.
- 24:47SPEAKER_03: So it's all about the power of four conferences and and who survives there, just like it was this year, where it's really the final four is the big boys.
- 24:55SPEAKER_02: It's really becoming uh a story of the power of two conferences.
- 25:00SPEAKER_02: And if you actually saw how dominant the Big Ten was in the NZA tournament this year, it's all it in the big Big Ten is you know, likely who is certainly going to be a national have a number of teams as national title uh contenders in football.
- 25:16SPEAKER_02: They've won three football titles for three years in, you know, the the national title three years ago in football.
- 25:22SPEAKER_02: You realize these Big Ten schools, one thing about them is they're big.
- 25:27SPEAKER_02: That's what they're a lot of they have a lot of wealthy alumni and they have a huge fan base, and they can pay players more.
- 25:35SPEAKER_02: And you are starting to see a separation of the Big Ten from the other conferences right now.
- 25:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and it's gonna become, but then there's pockets of teams in certain conferences that actually can punch and you know, have have the ability to you know punch above the same punch in the same weight class as the Big Ten, like the Texases, the Texas Tex, the Notre Dames, etc.
- 25:59SPEAKER_02: etc.
- 26:00SPEAKER_02: And you're uh I think what we're gonna find is to your point, a greater concentration of big schools with big alumni bases and the ability to attract a lot of money that are gonna be dominating uh the the highest tier of uh college football and college basketball.
- 26:19SPEAKER_03: And if you're a lum of one of those, right?
- 26:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, if you're not, you're like, how are we supposed to compete?
- 26:26SPEAKER_03: That's like I don't know what to tell you, bruh.
- 26:28SPEAKER_03: It's Texas has got like a billion-dollar endowment.
- 26:32SPEAKER_03: Texas AM has got like one, theirs is even bigger.
- 26:35SPEAKER_03: Like they've got as much money as they need to do whatever it is they want to do.
- 26:40SPEAKER_02: But but even but even look at look at the ace, you know, look at the ACC, which you know, for us growing up really always was the you know, the basketball conference.
- 26:49SPEAKER_02: The ACC can't attract the players now because they don't have the money.
- 26:53SPEAKER_02: The only schools that really, the only schools that really have the money are some of the bigger schools like Duke and Florida.
- 26:59SPEAKER_02: And if you actually look to see which schools are you actually have real, you know, have a lot of money in a large alumni and wealthy alumni, uh, it's those schools.
- 27:08SPEAKER_02: But a lot of the ACC is not it's not doing particularly well in basketball anymore.
- 27:14SPEAKER_02: Not nearly sort of the tradition of the ACC.
- 27:17SPEAKER_03: Kind of like uh Duke and Carolina, and even Carolina hadn't been Carolina of late.
- 27:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Carolina, Carol, the Carolina can't be a good thing.
- 27:23SPEAKER_03: Which is why they fired a coach.
- 27:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 27:25SPEAKER_02: And Carolina can't get Carolina is not competitive bidding for some of the top players, like uh, you know, like the Dukes or the Floridas.
- 27:33SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's that's the that's the key right now.
- 27:36SPEAKER_02: So you're it's gonna be you're gonna have a tournament of 76 teams.
- 27:40SPEAKER_02: There's gonna be probably about five that can win the national title.
- 27:45SPEAKER_02: And here's a dirty little secret if you had a tournament of 32 teams, there's gonna be about five that can win a national title, you know.
- 27:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's that's about right.
- 27:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so you got so you're it the 32 to 76 or 64 to 68 to 76.
- 27:59SPEAKER_02: Listen, I it's a smart financial move for the for the conferences and for the for the schools for sure.
- 28:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but bottom line for me is man, I just hate it.
- 28:07SPEAKER_03: Um, because it I mean, the regular season literally means nothing now.
- 28:12SPEAKER_03: I mean, literally nothing.
- 28:13SPEAKER_03: You can go 15 to 15, you're gonna get a tournament B.
- 28:16SPEAKER_03: Oh, my strength of schedule was so tough.
- 28:18SPEAKER_03: And so uh you'd like to see the regular season mean something, but it means nothing now.
- 28:23SPEAKER_03: And here's the thing I still don't think the mid-majors are gonna get in because they're still gonna hold it against them, right?
- 28:29SPEAKER_03: So uh that's that's my bottom line.
- 28:32SPEAKER_03: And moving on to the part of the show that I'm sorry, did you give your bottom line?
- 28:36SPEAKER_02: I didn't I'm I'm feeling I'm feeling deeply insulted because I have such such an incredible thing to say, which is the bottom line for me is people are gonna watch the line, people are still gonna watch it, they're still gonna make money from it, but the same five to eight teams are gonna be contending for the national title every year.
- 28:58SPEAKER_03: Um, and now the part of the show that everybody loves the most is the Ohio State corner.
- 29:06SPEAKER_03: Somehow, USA Today, I think this is just a clickbait thing, has picked the Buckeyes to be number one in the nation on their preseason, way too early for preseason football poll.
- 29:20SPEAKER_03: The Buckeyes are number one.
- 29:21SPEAKER_03: What are you looking at the poll?
- 29:23SPEAKER_03: Because Texas should be like number one or number one.
- 29:25SPEAKER_02: Texas is in the top three.
- 29:26SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's it's it it and they're basing it uh on on spring practice and spring games following.
- 29:35SPEAKER_03: So what I can tell you lose 11 players in the draft, and somebody goes, Oh, you're still number one.
- 29:40SPEAKER_02: Right, right.
- 29:41SPEAKER_02: And it's like last year, Ohio State was much lower because they lost so many players and they were able to replace them, and it was kind of surprising to a lot of people that Ohio State did so well.
- 29:51SPEAKER_02: Here's the reality nobody knows at this point.
- 29:56SPEAKER_02: No, nobody knows.
- 29:58SPEAKER_02: Uh, and well, there's gonna be a surprise that emerges, but you know, much like the NCAA basketball tournament, I think we know the group of schools where the surprise is going to emerge.
- 30:10SPEAKER_02: There's probably six teams in the Big Ten, you know, maybe three teams in the SEC, maybe four, Notre Dame, and you know, maybe you know, an outlier in the ACC like Miami, which again, Miami's program has come back because it's a big school and because there's a lot of wealthy alumni there.
- 30:30SPEAKER_02: So those are the types of schools that I think are going to challenge next year.
- 30:33SPEAKER_03: No, I think you're right.
- 30:34SPEAKER_03: Um, I think we're we're all interested to see what uh Indiana does.
- 30:38SPEAKER_03: But next year is the year of the quarterbacks, a bunch of really outstanding college quarterbacks.
- 30:43SPEAKER_03: The game for me, not that I'm breaking news here, has always been about the quarterback.
- 30:48SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 30:48SPEAKER_03: And so it'll be, you know, which quarterbacks make the most improvement.
- 30:52SPEAKER_03: Like, you know, obviously down here in Texas, I get more Arch Manning news than I can than I can handle.
- 31:01SPEAKER_03: And I still don't believe in Arch Manning.
- 31:04SPEAKER_03: He still looks like just a guy to me.
- 31:06SPEAKER_03: Uh well, okay, let me, that's harsh.
- 31:08SPEAKER_03: He's better than that, but I haven't seen anything that says, oh, Arch Manning is special.
- 31:13SPEAKER_03: I haven't seen anything that says that.
- 31:15SPEAKER_03: Because here's why.
- 31:19SPEAKER_03: If they would just say, hey, Arch, go play football, he might be that guy.
- 31:24SPEAKER_03: Because you know, you say what you want to, he's got really good speed.
- 31:29SPEAKER_03: And if they just said, hey, if you don't see what you like, take off and go run for 20 yards, they would really be a more dynamic offense.
- 31:36SPEAKER_03: But you know what the daddy and the uncles have said.
- 31:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, sharp, Sark, you better teach that boy how to read defenses, stand the pocket, deliver the ball.
- 31:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so because they ask him to do that, he's really not as dynamic as he could be.
- 31:48SPEAKER_03: And he is yet, now he don't care about proving nothing to little old JJT here, but he has not proved that he can step back in the pocket, play quarterback, and beat you on a regular basis.
- 32:00SPEAKER_03: So until he does that against good teams, I don't believe it.
- 32:05SPEAKER_03: Now, the regular team's really good, but you know, hey.
- 32:08SPEAKER_02: I was watching some Arch Manning highlights for some inexplicable reason in the last week.
- 32:14SPEAKER_02: I think I was reading some story, and then they were had playing some Arch Manning highlights on it.
- 32:18SPEAKER_02: And one thing to my extremely untrained eye, and so this this observation in three dollars is we'll get you a cup of coffee, right?
- 32:26SPEAKER_02: But my to my untrained eyes, watching Arch Manning and watching a lot of his highlights were his highlights were all when the receivers had were pretty open, his ball placement was not great, and I was thinking if he's gonna really take it to the next level, I think he's got to work mostly on his accuracy.
- 32:46SPEAKER_02: But I agree with you, but I agree with you that his speed is his running abilities is actually really very elite, from what I can tell.
- 32:57SPEAKER_02: But he he and to me, the the biggest thing, you know, you need a certain level of arm strength.
- 33:03SPEAKER_02: You don't need sort of the Jeff George, I can throw at 70 yards again, me dating myself here, but but you know, you sort of don't need you don't need the Josh Allen cannon arm.
- 33:11SPEAKER_02: But what you do need is the ability to be accurate and place the ball well.
- 33:15SPEAKER_02: That I don't see from him.
- 33:17SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 33:18SPEAKER_02: In your experience, when you uh you know cover quarterbacks, is that's is accuracy and ball placement something you can develop, or is that something you can you can definitely develop it?
- 33:28SPEAKER_03: You can definitely develop it because a lot of it's technique.
- 33:30SPEAKER_03: Now, obviously, some people are naturally gifted, but a lot of it is technique.
- 33:35SPEAKER_03: You know, are your feet where your eyes are, are your eyes and your feet mirrored, you know, and all the technical mechanical stuff.
- 33:41SPEAKER_02: But wouldn't somebody like wouldn't somebody like Arch Manning have shouldn't he theoretically have all of that technique more than almost anybody else, except for maybe like Todd Marinovich?
- 33:51SPEAKER_02: You know, that sort of thing?
- 33:52SPEAKER_03: Um check this out, man.
- 33:55SPEAKER_03: At one level, you would say yes, at another level, you would say real tough, like like Peyton's son will have it, in my opinion.
- 34:07SPEAKER_03: Why?
- 34:07SPEAKER_03: Because Peyton's retired and Peyton's working with his son every day because he's in the house with him.
- 34:13SPEAKER_03: Eli's son, if Eli's son plays football, he'll have it for the same reasons.
- 34:18SPEAKER_03: You gotta remember, Cooper.
- 34:20SPEAKER_03: I mean, he grew up, his uncles were playing.
- 34:23SPEAKER_03: And so, yeah, he hung out and got tutored by them in the summer or the spring or whatever.
- 34:27SPEAKER_03: But that's different than hey, come on out and let's go work straight for an hour tonight before you go to this trainer I got you with, or let's sit up in the den and read defenses, you know, an hour before you go to bed.
- 34:43SPEAKER_03: That's just proximity, and so he got you know the best of what he could get, but he still didn't get I live with Peyton, I live with Eli, and it's it's part of my daily, everyday life, right?
- 34:54SPEAKER_02: So that so that bodes well for his development at Texas next year, assuming they have uh you know the staff that can develop them.
- 35:01SPEAKER_03: Uh Texas got a great team on paper.
- 35:03SPEAKER_03: I mean, they got everything you want.
- 35:04SPEAKER_03: They got uh they literally got everything you want.
- 35:07SPEAKER_03: It's a matter of uh whether Arch plays good in the playoffs, because they'll be there.
- 35:12SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 35:12SPEAKER_03: And um, you know, I mean, uh, you know, all those teams are gonna be like that.
- 35:17SPEAKER_03: Like Ohio State's gonna be really good, but they'll be as good as however Julian Saiyan is.
- 35:22SPEAKER_03: You know, at the end of the day, that's how good they'll be.
- 35:25SPEAKER_02: Uh right, right.
- 35:26SPEAKER_02: I I also think you were saying last week, and you're you're right, is that for Ohio State, they gotta get a they gotta get an A runner in in the backfield?
- 35:36SPEAKER_02: You know, they have you know Bo Jackson's good.
- 35:39SPEAKER_02: He's a B plus.
- 35:39SPEAKER_02: Maybe he moves up to A level, but they gotta get a top runner in there.
- 35:44SPEAKER_02: I meant to ask you in the NFL draft thing, just to just to veer away from this, what did you think about uh Jeremiah Love going so high in the draft?
- 35:52SPEAKER_02: Were you surprised by that?
- 35:53SPEAKER_02: Did you think that made sense?
- 35:55SPEAKER_02: Does that have any is it running back is becoming more meaningful?
- 36:00SPEAKER_02: I I'm just curious what you think about that.
- 36:02SPEAKER_03: Um, I was surprised, but it's the Cardinals, so they made a dumb pick to my opinion.
- 36:07SPEAKER_02: So you think you do you do think it was a dumb pick?
- 36:10SPEAKER_03: It's a dumb pick because they don't have a passing game, they don't have a right tackle, they don't have any other things to support him to make him successful.
- 36:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 36:18SPEAKER_03: Like Ashton Genty might have been a really good running back.
- 36:21SPEAKER_03: You couldn't tell because they didn't have anything to make him successful last year.
- 36:25SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, but I think the running game is coming back more.
- 36:29SPEAKER_03: You know, these things run in cycles.
- 36:31SPEAKER_03: Um, but maybe they'll build the offense around him, and so it won't matter as much.
- 36:36SPEAKER_03: Maybe they'll throw it to him, hand it to him, and uh and let him go crazy.
- 36:41SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, now the other theory is we're going to put the team together this year, we'll get the quarterback in the draft next year, and now we already got the running back.
- 36:52SPEAKER_03: Hopefully, Marvin Harrison with a new offense coordinator, new offense, will be what we thought he was going to be.
- 36:58SPEAKER_03: And now we got an elite running back, we got an elite receiver, we got an elite quarterback, we're ready to go.
- 37:03SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 37:04SPEAKER_03: I'm sure that's what we're thinking.
- 37:06SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, nobody asks for my opinion except you.
- 37:10SPEAKER_03: Uh, NFL teams spend way too much time worried about positional value, this and that.
- 37:15SPEAKER_03: Can a 12 letter cuss word play?
- 37:17SPEAKER_03: That's all I need to do.
- 37:19SPEAKER_03: Can you play?
- 37:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and are you are you a difference maker?
- 37:24SPEAKER_03: If so, like you know, whether you okay, so let's take Jeremiah Love.
- 37:29SPEAKER_03: It's too high to take a running back.
- 37:31SPEAKER_03: Okay, if I told you he was getting Derrick Henry for the next 10 years, you good?
- 37:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, well, yeah, I'm I'm good, right?
- 37:39SPEAKER_03: I don't want to take Caleb Downs, he's a safety.
- 37:41SPEAKER_03: I don't he's too high for a safety.
- 37:42SPEAKER_03: If I told you you was getting Ed Reed, you good?
- 37:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you good.
- 37:47SPEAKER_03: So yeah, yes.
- 37:49SPEAKER_03: Now you said you could say, Taylor, those dudes are Hall of Famers.
- 37:52SPEAKER_03: Well, I know, but that's what people say.
- 37:54SPEAKER_03: These people have this capability.
- 37:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, play a position that you don't value.
- 37:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and it's it's it's interesting you use uh talk about Hall of Famers because the talk of you know the draft experts and a lot of the opinions that I see on it are the most likely, the player most likely to enter the Hall of Fame from this draft is Caleb Downs, and he went and he went number 11, which by the way was we both picked the over.
- 38:21SPEAKER_02: The over over-under on Ohio State players being drafted in the top 10 last week was three and a half.
- 38:27SPEAKER_02: It was three because Caleb went number 11.
- 38:30SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, I yeah, I I was sort of surprised by that pick, but I you know, I I also was kind of watching the the picks in the draft.
- 38:39SPEAKER_02: Now we're varying way off Ohio State, but I was watching the picks in the draft and was looking to see which teams this year seemed to be drafting far more for need than the best player.
- 38:52SPEAKER_02: And that maybe I don't know why that was.
- 38:54SPEAKER_02: Maybe that's a function of there wasn't that sort of I think there weren't that many great players.
- 38:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's why that's what that's what I was that's what that's what I thought, but I wasn't sure.
- 39:03SPEAKER_03: See, like, and this is just a gauge.
- 39:06SPEAKER_03: Most drafts, most drafts had between 14 and 18 players with a first round grade.
- 39:15SPEAKER_03: So obviously, if you're taking 23, you might be taking somebody with a second round grade, but I mean, 32 guys got to go in the first round, so yeah, it is what it is.
- 39:25SPEAKER_03: The Cowboys this year, after the draft, said they had 12 players with a first round grade.
- 39:32SPEAKER_02: Do you believe that or not?
- 39:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they always they always say after the draft, they always say what they had to do.
- 39:37SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 39:37SPEAKER_02: So it's it's okay.
- 39:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 39:39SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, because it's after the draft, so it doesn't matter.
- 39:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 39:43SPEAKER_03: Um like next year, when you look at the draft, I said most years it's 14 to 18.
- 39:47SPEAKER_03: Next year there might be 22 with first round grades, and so you're getting a much better player.
- 39:53SPEAKER_03: Uh the other thing is somebody pointed this out with NIL money, it's sometimes it's better for you to stay in school, make make more money, enhance your technique and your draft stuff, and you know, be big man on campus than it is to go be a pro.
- 40:12SPEAKER_02: But but I but I also right, and I also have this other theory, which is that when you enter the NFL draft now, as opposed to five years ago, you want to make sure that you have that you are NFL ready and you're gonna get paid in the NFL as a player.
- 40:28SPEAKER_02: And if you're not, you stay in, try to develop your technique.
- 40:31SPEAKER_02: So I think the the draft has become less of a gamble on a lot of players, particularly in the first couple of rounds, because a lot of players can come right in and play right now, and that's a function of NIL and players being cognizant of their relative value in the draft.
- 40:47SPEAKER_02: And so I so so that that I thought was one of the aspects of it.
- 40:52SPEAKER_02: So as you look at Ohio State's team, it you look at Ohio State, you look at Julian Saiyan.
- 40:59SPEAKER_02: If he has a year like he did last year, I don't I don't believe no, he can come out at the at the end of next year, I think.
- 41:04SPEAKER_02: You think he'll be if he has a if he has a year similar to the one that he had this year, think he'll be a top 10 pick?
- 41:14SPEAKER_03: I really don't know.
- 41:15SPEAKER_03: I mean, there's so many quarterbacks out there.
- 41:18SPEAKER_03: I mean, they're gonna go all, you know, they're gonna go all over the place.
- 41:22SPEAKER_03: A lot of it, a lot of it will just be determined.
- 41:25SPEAKER_02: You think it'll be a first you think it'll be a first round pick?
- 41:28SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 41:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, okay.
- 41:29SPEAKER_03: So so that that's uh yeah, because he's gonna put up numbers, yeah, and uh they're gonna win.
- 41:37SPEAKER_03: How much they win, who knows?
- 41:39SPEAKER_03: But they're going to win.
- 41:40SPEAKER_03: And and he'll be, you know, he'll have his share.
- 41:44SPEAKER_03: I mean, yeah, he had an outstanding first year as a starter.
- 41:47SPEAKER_03: Of course, of course.
- 41:49SPEAKER_03: Um, now, you know, his problem is he's just a little small, so he needs to be in a weight room, picking up some weight, you know, um, so that he can convert a quarterback sneak because he's not so light in the ass.
- 42:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so so we've got it.
- 42:03SPEAKER_02: Uh so Jeremiah Love, not Jeremiah Love, uh Jeremiah Smith uh and Julian Saiyan are almost surefire first rounders for Iowa State next year.
- 42:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 42:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 42:15SPEAKER_03: No doubt.
- 42:16SPEAKER_03: No doubt.
- 42:17SPEAKER_03: And then, you know, they may add another couple.
- 42:19SPEAKER_03: They may add another couple, people we don't know about yet, people we haven't heard of.
- 42:24SPEAKER_03: They probably got a corner.
- 42:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, hey, Davis, Davis uh Ig Benosen even went, he went like into the second round, I think.
- 42:30SPEAKER_03: So yeah, I mean, and uh he's an interesting player, he's got great size and stuff.
- 42:38SPEAKER_03: And you know, it'll be interesting to see if they let him play in the league.
- 42:41SPEAKER_03: Because you know, he had like 15 PIs two years ago.
- 42:44SPEAKER_03: He only had like a couple last year.
- 42:46SPEAKER_02: I I think he's I think he's a I think he I think he's a really, really high ceiling player, but he could have he could also flame out in uh you know flame out after six games as well.
- 43:01SPEAKER_02: I don't know, but but listen, I think, listen, I think Ohio State, like every year, is gonna reload.
- 43:05SPEAKER_02: There's gonna be a lot of players who make it in the first round of the draft.
- 43:08SPEAKER_02: Are they gonna have three in the top ten next year?
- 43:10SPEAKER_02: They'll have at least two, I think, with Saiyan and uh uh Jeremiah Smith.
- 43:15SPEAKER_03: That's interesting.
- 43:16SPEAKER_03: Like, I don't know if Saiyan's going in the top 10, but he might.
- 43:20SPEAKER_02: He's a quarterback and he's had success in college and he's had more than 20 starts, and he's in a major program like Ohio State.
- 43:28SPEAKER_02: I think he goes in the top, I think he goes in the top 10 for sure.
- 43:31SPEAKER_03: All right, we'll have we'll have to uh we'll have to make a preseason bet about that.
- 43:34SPEAKER_02: Okay, sure.
- 43:35SPEAKER_03: All right, cool.
- 43:38SPEAKER_03: Well, I guess folks will we'll check out now.
- 43:43SPEAKER_03: It's been a riveting conversation.
- 43:45SPEAKER_02: There's nothing left to say.
