- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to press Play, where we're gonna go through the
- 0:03Speaker 1: less than stellar history of video game movies. I'm Drew
- 0:06Speaker 1: Shulman and with me is my beef cheek bro and
- 0:08Speaker 1: my best buddy Jason Wynn. Now, whether you're watching or
- 0:12Speaker 1: playing along with us, now is the time for press Play. Jason,
- 0:22Speaker 1: we're doing a podcast just the two of us.
- 0:23Speaker 2: No mad In Maudraum. We're in charge. We're gonna address that.
- 0:28Speaker 2: We're gonna We're gonna yeah, We're like, oh yeah, no, two,
- 0:31Speaker 2: we're two children who shouldn't be sat next to each
- 0:35Speaker 2: other in class and the teachers are away and it's
- 0:39Speaker 2: gonna be chaos.
- 0:40Speaker 1: And I love that I was that student all the
- 0:42Speaker 1: damn time. Like it is very very evident, Like I
- 0:45Speaker 1: like I remember like being like in school and they
- 0:47Speaker 1: would like see you alphabetically, and like day one it
- 0:49Speaker 1: was like alphabetical, day two. Uh you know what these two,
- 0:52Speaker 1: I know your names, are this like just gonna move
- 0:54Speaker 1: you apart. It's like really why, It's like, oh, we're
- 0:56Speaker 1: just changing the order and it's like uh huh, we're
- 0:58Speaker 1: the only two being moved.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Yeah, oh I know I know what I am. That's
- 1:03Speaker 2: that's us this time, and we have this Moniker at
- 1:06Speaker 2: the Beef Chick Bros. From our Gate Leapers appearances, and
- 1:09Speaker 2: I think that's super appropriate for this first episode. I'm
- 1:12Speaker 2: loving it. I guess very Little Brother energy right now,
- 1:15Speaker 2: very Player two energy, and I dig that. I dig
- 1:18Speaker 2: that You're my Luigi, You're my Green Mario, You're my
- 1:23Speaker 2: Mario Mario.
- 1:25Speaker 1: That is still I think of all the things this
- 1:27Speaker 1: movie gave to, like the greater Mario universe, because I
- 1:30Speaker 1: don't think there's anything in this movie that really like
- 1:32Speaker 1: carried forward, Like I can't even think of like more
- 1:35Speaker 1: modern media in the Mario franchise that like references anything
- 1:38Speaker 1: in this but the Mario Mario and Mario Luigi thing
- 1:41Speaker 1: is kind of like stuck in the ethos, and I
- 1:43Speaker 1: think other media has referenced it.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Yeah, because it's it's really interesting. We're gonna get right
- 1:48Speaker 2: into it, I guess with this movie. Yeah, it's it
- 1:50Speaker 2: lives in infamy. I think it's like Nintendo's first foray
- 1:55Speaker 2: into licensing out their IP into someone else. It's also
- 1:58Speaker 2: like the first video game movie. It's so many first
- 2:03Speaker 2: and it's it's rough, it's it's it's choppy to say
- 2:07Speaker 2: at the very very least I'm.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Trying to think, is this is this the first time
- 2:10Speaker 1: Nintendo's like outsourced of projects. There's one other infamous one
- 2:13Speaker 1: that they did. Okay, breaking away from the movies. Uh,
- 2:16Speaker 1: you know the the Zelda CDI games.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, what year?
- 2:20Speaker 1: Were those just eight?
- 2:21Speaker 2: Twise those might be but this is a big project, right,
- 2:24Speaker 2: this is a movie. This is a movie. It's going
- 2:27Speaker 2: to Western Hollywood. I think I think one thing that
- 2:30Speaker 2: you do carry over is we start off the movie
- 2:33Speaker 2: immediately we're in the real life city of New York
- 2:37Speaker 2: and we're with these two plumber brothers, which is how
- 2:41Speaker 2: the new Mario Brothers movie starts as well. I think
- 2:43Speaker 2: they're very like Brooklyn. They're very we're taking the Italian
- 2:46Speaker 2: plumber idea and we're making them like Italian Americans.
- 2:49Speaker 1: It's one of those like weird features of the Mario
- 2:51Speaker 1: franchise that like they are plumbers, that like doesn't come
- 2:54Speaker 1: up super frequently. I remember the old cartoon covered it
- 2:57Speaker 1: a little bit. Yeah, okay, and that like they lived
- 2:59Speaker 1: in in the real world and like went to the
- 3:02Speaker 1: mushroom Kingdom through like literally just like we're fixing a toilet.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Why Is there a giant green pipe here? Yes, we're
- 3:08Speaker 1: going down. It's you know, the natural thing you do
- 3:11Speaker 1: is a plumber explore random magical pipes you find.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Yeah, it seems to be a very movie heavy thing
- 3:16Speaker 2: because you don't start Super Mario Odyssey fixing a toilet, right.
- 3:20Speaker 1: No, it's it's specifically the as soon as you're in
- 3:23Speaker 1: the video game world, it's like, let's just forget he's
- 3:25Speaker 1: a plumber. Like starting up everyone, we're playing tennis, we're
- 3:29Speaker 1: go karting, We're not plumbing.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Tennis. But that's oddly enough. And I think I'm gonna
- 3:36Speaker 2: hit this point straight away. This movie lives in infamy
- 3:40Speaker 2: as being awful and terrible, and we're gonna hit all
- 3:42Speaker 2: those points, don't you worry. Oh yeah, controversial take, at
- 3:46Speaker 2: least for the start of the movie. It is that
- 3:49Speaker 2: shit insane, But I think it's quite charming. I actually think,
- 3:54Speaker 2: what is it? It's Bob Hoskins and John Leguizama play our
- 3:57Speaker 2: Techeler Mario brothers, and I think when they're together there
- 4:02Speaker 2: they've got a brotherly like chemistry.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I will say like despite like as we'll get
- 4:07Speaker 1: into a little bit later with some of the more
- 4:08Speaker 1: like behind the scenes stuff I've like looked up and
- 4:11Speaker 1: their lack of interest in this project as he's gone. Yeah,
- 4:17Speaker 1: they really do encompass these characters very well. Like if
- 4:20Speaker 1: I really had to see like a modern day like
- 4:23Speaker 1: two adults living in New York as plumbers turned superheroes,
- 4:27Speaker 1: Like I could not imagine a better casting at the
- 4:29Speaker 1: time for those two. Yeah, and like again, I'm a
- 4:32Speaker 1: huge Hoskins fan. I think Roger Rabbit is one of
- 4:34Speaker 1: the great time. Yeah, so like him in this role,
- 4:38Speaker 1: Like I always sort of equate the two because it's
- 4:41Speaker 1: a very funny, like yeah, fish out of Water story
- 4:43Speaker 1: where he's like the hard boil, real grounded person.
- 4:46Speaker 2: He plays Mario. He plays Mario Mario that way exactly
- 4:51Speaker 2: where it's like the very first like ten minutes of
- 4:54Speaker 2: the movie, it's just about trying to hook Luigi up
- 4:57Speaker 2: with this cute girl that he met down the street.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Yeah, like wingman energy.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Yeah, there's just this really charming quality about He's like
- 5:06Speaker 2: a what I tell you, Luigi, you follow me, you
- 5:08Speaker 2: get the girls, And Luigi's just like, I don't know
- 5:10Speaker 2: if you had a hand in that at all, And
- 5:11Speaker 2: I just I find it maybe it's because we live
- 5:15Speaker 2: in an era of modern movies where everything is kind
- 5:17Speaker 2: of recycled and there's just quips and all this other stuff.
- 5:20Speaker 2: But I do find that minus the Mario elements of
- 5:23Speaker 2: this movie, this movie is extremely charming and weird and
- 5:26Speaker 2: very nineties.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Yeah, so again i'll allow a peak behind the curtain.
- 5:30Speaker 1: This is our first episode, our first recording. We did
- 5:33Speaker 1: discuss a little bit of the movie kind of just
- 5:35Speaker 1: in leading up to this first episode, and we both
- 5:37Speaker 1: kind of came to the same agreement of like, yes,
- 5:39Speaker 1: it's not a great Mario movie. It's not like a
- 5:42Speaker 1: great Nintendo franchise movie, but it's like wholesome in fun
- 5:46Speaker 1: and decent film. Like I liked the characters. I like, like, yeah,
- 5:50Speaker 1: there's a little plot holes here and there. There's some
- 5:52Speaker 1: massive plot holes here, little there's lots of like questionable decisions,
- 5:58Speaker 1: and like the production was a shit show. We all
- 6:01Speaker 1: we've all heard the stories and we'll go over a
- 6:02Speaker 1: few later, but like, ultimately, if you've removed the fact
- 6:06Speaker 1: that this is trying to be a movie based off
- 6:08Speaker 1: video game characters, it's a fun movie.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 6:12Speaker 1: So I want to give myone a little recap because
- 6:14Speaker 1: some people don't have one. Again, a lot of these
- 6:16Speaker 1: older films hard to find on streaming or like access
- 6:20Speaker 1: to them in a way that is like feasible. So
- 6:22Speaker 1: if you haven't watched this movie recently or you know,
- 6:25Speaker 1: avoided it like most people tend to recommend you do,
- 6:29Speaker 1: I have a super brief recap for you, which is
- 6:31Speaker 1: just as simply we have plombers Mario and Luigi. They
- 6:34Speaker 1: get transported to a parallel universe called Dino Hatton, where
- 6:37Speaker 1: a de evolved King Koopa seeks to merge his world
- 6:41Speaker 1: with ours. The brother's team up with Princess Daisy not
- 6:44Speaker 1: Peach Daisy, who was the key to stopping Coopa's plan.
- 6:48Speaker 1: They navigate a dystopian city filled with strange creatures and technology,
- 6:52Speaker 1: facing various challenges as they try to rescue Daisy and
- 6:55Speaker 1: forwark Koopa's evil scheme. Ultimately they control that. They confront
- 6:59Speaker 1: Koopa in a at all to say, both worlds and
- 7:01Speaker 1: they rescue the princess. I mean, like on paper, the
- 7:07Speaker 1: plot is very a Mario movie. It is a princess
- 7:09Speaker 1: gets kidnapped by King Cooper or Bowser, and they go
- 7:13Speaker 1: stop him in his Dino world. It just so happens.
- 7:16Speaker 1: The world of this movie is a weird like Manhattan
- 7:20Speaker 1: but Dinosaur did by which it's just it's humans in
- 7:24Speaker 1: weird pug rock clothing that evolved from diners and a
- 7:27Speaker 1: monkey's dino Sapiens Dino.
- 7:30Speaker 2: This movie definitely came out at an era where like
- 7:33Speaker 2: you can definitely tell it came out after Back to
- 7:36Speaker 2: the Future two. Yeah, like the fashion and the set design. Uh,
- 7:43Speaker 2: definitely calls back to things like that Ghostbusters a little bit.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Even it starts off like the first four minutes of
- 7:51Speaker 2: the movie is insanity because they introduce the idea of multiverse.
- 7:56Speaker 2: They introduce the idea of dinosaurs being not not convergent
- 8:02Speaker 2: like evolution, just being transported to another dimension. They're from
- 8:05Speaker 2: our universe. They get transported and evolved into us, but
- 8:09Speaker 2: more aggressive. And then there's a baby that gets transported
- 8:13Speaker 2: in an egg to a like yeah, uh, it's it's insanity.
- 8:22Speaker 2: But if you look past.
- 8:24Speaker 1: That, it's it feels like such a weird like like
- 8:28Speaker 1: if you showed someone this movie with like no context,
- 8:32Speaker 1: it was like, it's a super Mario movie. You've played
- 8:33Speaker 1: the games, maybe you've seen the new movie. Let's go
- 8:36Speaker 1: watch this one now. In the first four minutes are
- 8:38Speaker 1: just like, wait, what's happening? The dinosaurs are going extinct?
- 8:41Speaker 1: Why is this happening? What does this matter? Why is
- 8:43Speaker 1: there an egg baby? Yeah? Where where does any of
- 8:46Speaker 1: this meet up with any of the media I have
- 8:48Speaker 1: consumed up to this point about the Superhero Brothers, Like
- 8:51Speaker 1: at least at this point there was like what two
- 8:54Speaker 1: maybe three games out at this point.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, which have no plots.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, like we like literally we have the Yes,
- 9:01Speaker 1: Yoshi comes from a dino land. Okay, dinosaurs have a land.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Check.
- 9:07Speaker 2: I have a note here and it's next to the
- 9:10Speaker 2: Yoshi appearing when oh yes movie that I said, everything
- 9:13Speaker 2: related to Mario in this movie is horrifying and awfo
- 9:16Speaker 2: and I don't like it, and Yoshi especially is one
- 9:20Speaker 2: of them. It's so funny that like they get transported
- 9:22Speaker 2: to this alternate universe that is supposed to be DeVault
- 9:25Speaker 2: dinosaurs and the one dinosaur creature in it is horrifying.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Like he's as bad as the little Gumba people.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Oh yeah, like the Goopa people gave me nightmare. It's
- 9:35Speaker 1: a kid. Yoshi. I kind of love and I still
- 9:37Speaker 1: do and I actually learned it's a fully like it's
- 9:40Speaker 1: a puppet. I could see it. That is, that is
- 9:42Speaker 1: nine people operating a puppet who maybe gets what like
- 9:47Speaker 1: a minute of screen time that's generous, Yeah, like forty
- 9:50Speaker 1: five seconds maybe, Like honestly, like I assumed it was
- 9:53Speaker 1: just like really shitty CG for its time, where like
- 9:55Speaker 1: decent CG. Four times it looked good and then it's like, no,
- 9:58Speaker 1: this was like a super animated puppet with like nine handlers,
- 10:01Speaker 1: And I'm like, yeah, isn't it on screen for like
- 10:03Speaker 1: a second? Yeah, And the fact that shows like three times,
- 10:06Speaker 1: I was shocked. The effects in this movie are quite good.
- 10:10Speaker 1: The very first time they get into Koopa Land, there's
- 10:14Speaker 1: this lengthy police chase scene and I think if you
- 10:17Speaker 1: stripped away all the Mario elements from that, I think
- 10:20Speaker 1: it's quite good because I like the design of the
- 10:23Speaker 1: police cars.
- 10:24Speaker 2: There's this like weird it's like RoboCop and Back to
- 10:28Speaker 2: the Future too.
- 10:29Speaker 1: It's like never really like discussed, but it shows up
- 10:31Speaker 1: a little bit like they're on a tram system, like
- 10:33Speaker 1: they're all like hooked up to a wire in the air, yeah,
- 10:36Speaker 1: which is why the car dies when they get too
- 10:38Speaker 1: far from the city.
- 10:39Speaker 2: There's this there is this wonderful thing where it feels
- 10:43Speaker 2: like the people involved in this movie did like it,
- 10:47Speaker 2: because I think the acting for some of those actors
- 10:50Speaker 2: are pretty stellar for a nineties movie again Tyler, Bob
- 10:54Speaker 2: Hoskins and John Legozama. But also Daisy's quite good, like
- 10:57Speaker 2: for what she's given. The only person I don't like
- 11:00Speaker 2: is King Koopa. I thought he was good and then
- 11:02Speaker 2: he gives like a one minute dialogue like monologue in
- 11:05Speaker 2: the middle of the movie, and it's bad. It's really bad.
- 11:09Speaker 2: But I think if you stripped away all the Mario elements,
- 11:11Speaker 2: like the set design, the world's building is quite fascinating
- 11:15Speaker 2: and quite dated, like in a good way, like it's
- 11:18Speaker 2: very of the nineties late eighties era of here's this
- 11:22Speaker 2: futurism that is aesthetically of that era.
- 11:26Speaker 1: If that makes it also if we can talk about
- 11:29Speaker 1: the aesthetic. So something I caught for the first time,
- 11:31Speaker 1: because like again I've seen this movie a handful of times.
- 11:34Speaker 2: This is my first viewing.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Yeah oh really yeah, oh, this to me was one
- 11:38Speaker 1: of those like as a child, my father rented it
- 11:40Speaker 1: thinking like it's a Mario movie, like the thing I
- 11:42Speaker 1: think every parent saw this one like super Mario, my
- 11:45Speaker 1: kid likes a Mario, and then showed them this and
- 11:48Speaker 1: they were.
- 11:48Speaker 2: Like, what the fuck are they doing to me?
- 11:52Speaker 1: The policeman in this film have the word police written
- 11:56Speaker 1: on the back of their jackets in like fucking rhinestones.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Oh really jeweled.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Like I was just like, what that is the campy
- 12:07Speaker 1: ish again, the level of camp in this movie. I
- 12:10Speaker 1: think it's like one of those like amazing words that
- 12:12Speaker 1: you don't like think about when you think of like,
- 12:14Speaker 1: because I don't think it was designed to be campy,
- 12:16Speaker 1: but it secretly was campy.
- 12:21Speaker 2: There's this club scene I did write club scene awful. Yes,
- 12:26Speaker 2: it's so long, but there's like parts in it that
- 12:28Speaker 2: are very charming and very like cute where it's it's
- 12:31Speaker 2: all these things kind of dialed up, and even like,
- 12:34Speaker 2: let's talk about some plot here, Ye, there's some nonsensicalness
- 12:38Speaker 2: with the villains. They're really dumb and they're really bad,
- 12:40Speaker 2: But you talk about camp and if you think about
- 12:42Speaker 2: in that lens, which I'm only now doing here, it's
- 12:46Speaker 2: quite good. King Koopa Bowser Uh his two henchmen are
- 12:51Speaker 2: are awful and idiots and blundering the whole thing. So
- 12:54Speaker 2: what is his punishment for them? He evolves them and
- 12:59Speaker 2: they become smarter. Uh yeah, And I'm sitting here like, one,
- 13:04Speaker 2: that's your punishment for them? To do that to yourself,
- 13:07Speaker 2: do that to everyone? Why are you stopping here?
- 13:09Speaker 1: Why not just make everyone smart? Yeah?
- 13:11Speaker 2: What what are we doing? But on the lens of camp,
- 13:16Speaker 2: on the lens of enjoying like movies of this era,
- 13:18Speaker 2: Masters of the Universe is when I just remembered, Oh
- 13:21Speaker 2: my god, it's kind of awesome. It's kind of cool,
- 13:24Speaker 2: it's kind of hilarious, and I think there's a charm
- 13:27Speaker 2: to that.
- 13:28Speaker 1: Yea and Spike, the two of them, like after being evolved,
- 13:31Speaker 1: and like like the banter they have, like both when
- 13:34Speaker 1: they're dumb and when they're smart. It is just some
- 13:36Speaker 1: of the best improvised banter. I hope it's improvised because
- 13:39Speaker 1: it's so good. Yeah, but back yeah, but also, can
- 13:43Speaker 1: we discuss like the secret subplot of them where like
- 13:46Speaker 1: they become smart and then like they kind of revolt
- 13:49Speaker 1: against Kuba in the very last second because they realize
- 13:51Speaker 1: he's a bad person. Suddenly they're like, we're smart enough
- 13:54Speaker 1: to realize that this whole system is flawed and you're
- 13:56Speaker 1: the problem. So we're gonna switch sides last second.
- 13:58Speaker 2: Why wouldn't you just evolve yourself and everyone? Why would
- 14:02Speaker 2: she just it's it's so nonsensical. Another awful thing about
- 14:07Speaker 2: this movie, please is again the connection to I think
- 14:10Speaker 2: everything that they had to connect back to Mario is awful.
- 14:14Speaker 2: The fungus because they realize that Daisy's father has become fungus,
- 14:20Speaker 2: and so they're trying to save Daisy's father, who was
- 14:25Speaker 2: Do I have this right?
- 14:26Speaker 1: There was the royalty of this, Like, yes, that's why
- 14:29Speaker 1: Daisy is a princess because her father was the king
- 14:32Speaker 1: before Koopa stole the kingdom by de evolving him into
- 14:36Speaker 1: a fungus.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Because because and mushrooms.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, I was gonna say, like, like, are they
- 14:43Speaker 1: different species, because like they're evolve from dinosaurs. Like he
- 14:46Speaker 1: makes it very clear that dinosaurs evolved into dino sapiens,
- 14:49Speaker 1: which is that he is. Yeah, which is why when
- 14:51Speaker 1: there's like a brief shot of them being de evolved,
- 14:53Speaker 1: even the goobas, when they're deevolved, it's just their heads
- 14:55Speaker 1: turned back to like small dino heads. Yeah, So are
- 14:58Speaker 1: we to believe that Daisy and her father, the King,
- 15:01Speaker 1: who's never I don't think given an answer for I
- 15:02Speaker 1: think just being the mushroom King or something. Are they
- 15:05Speaker 1: are they? Is she like a mushroom safeed? Are they
- 15:08Speaker 1: mushroom people? Yeah? We devolved Daisy? Does she become a
- 15:11Speaker 1: literal daisy? Is that what it is? Is she actually
- 15:15Speaker 1: a daisy? They're plants, dude. The connections are insane. The
- 15:18Speaker 1: connections to the Mario universe are insane because they're so bad.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Is horrifying. It's so it's Last of Us scary.
- 15:26Speaker 2: Uh.
- 15:28Speaker 1: This was the predecessor that the Secret prequel, the Last
- 15:30Speaker 1: of Us.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Yeah, Like, I don't understand why. It seems like if
- 15:34Speaker 2: this movie had just been able to be what it was,
- 15:37Speaker 2: which is I guess like two Brooklyn dudes going on
- 15:40Speaker 2: a weird sci fi adventure exactly, it might have been
- 15:43Speaker 2: pretty decent. But they went mushrooms, fungus, horrifyingness like It's okay, Like,
- 15:49Speaker 2: as a Mario fan, I don't need it.
- 15:52Speaker 1: But that's what I think that the issue is. It's
- 15:53Speaker 1: basically they like whether or not they had a decent idea,
- 15:56Speaker 1: what they ended up making was something we both agree
- 15:59Speaker 1: and I still have is a very fun, silly, like
- 16:03Speaker 1: like the Pinnacle of just like eighties like action movie stupid. Yeah,
- 16:07Speaker 1: Like it doesn't need to make sense, it doesn't need
- 16:09Speaker 1: to be perfect. It can just be fun and have
- 16:11Speaker 1: a few good set pieces and give you a good
- 16:13Speaker 1: like yo ooh, that was fun moment. Yeah. But like
- 16:17Speaker 1: they try to tie these things in, like the bomb
- 16:20Speaker 1: being such a big deal and like the whole like
- 16:22Speaker 1: weird Rube Goldberg esque adventure goes on just to end
- 16:25Speaker 1: up backward. It started underneath Bowser, like.
- 16:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I want to buy the bullet bill because the
- 16:31Speaker 2: bullet bill is really cool.
- 16:32Speaker 1: It's just a bullet Oh yeah, I've forgot about that
- 16:35Speaker 1: until we either rewatch.
- 16:36Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, but it could have been so much cooler,
- 16:38Speaker 2: you know exactly.
- 16:40Speaker 1: And like I will say, I will give kudos. There
- 16:42Speaker 1: is one thing they did that I kind of like.
- 16:45Speaker 1: It wasn't a direct tie to Mario, but it kind
- 16:47Speaker 1: of made it a video game movie. Is when Luigi's like,
- 16:50Speaker 1: I could figure out how to drive this weird carpet
- 16:52Speaker 1: of the world because it's just like a video game,
- 16:54Speaker 1: And I'm like, that's kudos. That's the way to do it.
- 16:58Speaker 2: Because this is the first this is the inaugural of
- 17:00Speaker 2: both our podcasts and video game movies. It is it
- 17:04Speaker 2: the idea that like in history here because this is
- 17:06Speaker 2: nineteen ninety three, is the idea that you think executives
- 17:09Speaker 2: would have been like, oh, but we need to add
- 17:12Speaker 2: this lore because people like Lord, they need like a grounded,
- 17:16Speaker 2: uh explanation of how these things work or they Do
- 17:20Speaker 2: you think because there was Mario to this day in
- 17:23Speaker 2: twenty twenty four doesn't have much story to it. Do
- 17:27Speaker 2: you feel like that was a sandbox for them to
- 17:31Speaker 2: play around and that's where people's heads were at the
- 17:34Speaker 2: time of the nineties. They went, let's make this. Let's
- 17:37Speaker 2: do weird, crazy sci fi and over the top like
- 17:41Speaker 2: version of me.
- 17:42Speaker 1: Characters, if I had to guess so again, like in
- 17:45Speaker 1: the World of Fun. Facts about this movie is that
- 17:48Speaker 1: the script was rewritten so many times and because of this,
- 17:52Speaker 1: there is a bunch of little things that like we're
- 17:54Speaker 1: more important at some point and then kind of like
- 17:58Speaker 1: the story beat was dropped, like there it supposed to
- 18:00Speaker 1: be an entire Mario Kart section to this film apparently wow,
- 18:03Speaker 1: which that we kind of get a piece of in
- 18:05Speaker 1: the police chase. But it was almost like the The
- 18:09Speaker 1: criticism it received was it was too mad MAXI because
- 18:12Speaker 1: it was them in the desert outside of town. How
- 18:15Speaker 1: do we get back? We join a group of like
- 18:18Speaker 1: cart racers and we stormed the capitol like and it
- 18:21Speaker 1: was just like, oh, it just feels like Mad Max now.
- 18:23Speaker 1: So it feels like they basically had like I picture
- 18:26Speaker 1: like the whiteboard with those old magnetic like like word
- 18:29Speaker 1: tiles used for poetry, and they had like mushroom and
- 18:34Speaker 1: koopa dinosaurs and just like a bunch of the buzzwords
- 18:37Speaker 1: you heard if you asked, like if you read like
- 18:39Speaker 1: the first three pages of the manual for like any
- 18:42Speaker 1: of these games, and they were like, cool, write a movie,
- 18:45Speaker 1: but you have to include all of the keywords we.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Gave you, right, Like maybe a Nintendo had brought that
- 18:51Speaker 2: down to the studio. In the studio was like, what
- 18:54Speaker 2: are we gonna do with a mushroom? They just have
- 18:56Speaker 2: like a white bun mushroom in their hands and they're like,
- 18:58Speaker 2: what do we deal with this thing?
- 19:00Speaker 1: And that's why it's like like the idea that like
- 19:03Speaker 1: like the king being de evolved and like taken out
- 19:06Speaker 1: of power but he's not dead is a great way
- 19:08Speaker 1: to do it like you're not killing him, you're giving
- 19:10Speaker 1: the childhood friendly like he comes back at the end
- 19:13Speaker 1: because the bad guy's defeated and happily ever after, and
- 19:16Speaker 1: it's like, Okay, well what does he turn into? Uh, well,
- 19:18Speaker 1: we need mushrooms. What if it's a mushroom because mushrooms
- 19:21Speaker 1: are power ups in the world and it can have people. Yeah,
- 19:24Speaker 1: And it just feels like it really feels like the
- 19:26Speaker 1: Cards Against Humanity version of like, here are some words
- 19:30Speaker 1: you have, like you have to use in your writing
- 19:32Speaker 1: problem or a.
- 19:32Speaker 2: Madness almost yeah, yeah, And I guess with the like
- 19:37Speaker 2: the benefit of hindsight, I think something that we're seeing
- 19:39Speaker 2: with modern video game movies and adaptations and so and
- 19:42Speaker 2: so forth, is there's an essence to a thing, right
- 19:46Speaker 2: that people are getting Like The Last of Us certainly
- 19:49Speaker 2: took some privileges with some of their low and some
- 19:51Speaker 2: of their the structuring of that story, but it still
- 19:54Speaker 2: had the essence of the characters with the world, whereas
- 19:58Speaker 2: I think so are on, especially in Mario's lore and
- 20:04Speaker 2: it's placement in culture, there wasn't a lot of the
- 20:08Speaker 2: essence of story, if that makes any sense, Like it's
- 20:12Speaker 2: a very boiled down is Plumber saves Princess in a
- 20:17Speaker 2: castle from lizard, and there's not a lot to do
- 20:21Speaker 2: with that in like an hour forty five two hours
- 20:23Speaker 2: however long this movie is, but also not enough to
- 20:27Speaker 2: gain the essence of that to make it feel like
- 20:29Speaker 2: you're watching Mario the way you feel like you're playing Mario,
- 20:33Speaker 2: if that makes any sense.
- 20:35Speaker 1: No, I agree completely, And I think the issue is
- 20:37Speaker 1: kind of like you hit the nail on the head,
- 20:39Speaker 1: and I think we'll see this change as we move
- 20:42Speaker 1: through the history of this fanti of these movies, because
- 20:45Speaker 1: I think the problem with the Mario is the fact
- 20:47Speaker 1: that there really isn't like plow even if you look
- 20:51Speaker 1: at the more recent games, everyone is just like Bowser
- 20:55Speaker 1: shows up or insert villain here shows up, steals a
- 20:58Speaker 1: thing mcguffin of the week, and you have to go
- 21:01Speaker 1: through several worlds to get a bunch of smaller versions
- 21:04Speaker 1: of the thing until you can beat him and get
- 21:05Speaker 1: the big thing.
- 21:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Like that, I just described every Mario game you've ever
- 21:09Speaker 1: played or heard of, and like, yeah, there's the rare
- 21:13Speaker 1: exception like the Mario RPG or some of the other
- 21:15Speaker 1: ones that had a bit more of the story I
- 21:17Speaker 1: think Paper Mario is a great example. But even though
- 21:20Speaker 1: there's nothing about like if I gave you, like any
- 21:23Speaker 1: of the Mario arp or any the paper Mario games,
- 21:25Speaker 1: you could just sub out Mario with ex protagonist and
- 21:29Speaker 1: ex villain and just drop the Mario theming to it,
- 21:32Speaker 1: and you have you have a final fantasy. You have
- 21:35Speaker 1: a fire, you have a breath of fire. I'm throwing
- 21:38Speaker 1: out of RPGs here I can like there's nothing, there's
- 21:42Speaker 1: so little established Mario war Like, yes, there's little bits
- 21:45Speaker 1: here and there. We know that Princess Peach is the princess,
- 21:48Speaker 1: we know, we know who Daisy is, we know who
- 21:50Speaker 1: they are, we know like their relationship with each other,
- 21:53Speaker 1: and like who rules what kingdom and who has what powers.
- 21:56Speaker 1: But the same way that you can go out to
- 21:57Speaker 1: like Chapters or Indigo or your local books or pick
- 22:00Speaker 1: up the like thirty eight pound book of like the
- 22:03Speaker 1: history of Legend of Zelda, where it's like the original
- 22:06Speaker 1: race that built the tri force and then the shadow realm,
- 22:09Speaker 1: like there's established lord, there's like what to work with.
- 22:12Speaker 1: Mario's would basically be like a zine that some kid printed, woot,
- 22:16Speaker 1: just as what he tells this movie.
- 22:18Speaker 2: Yeah, here's an interesting question. Do you think, and I
- 22:20Speaker 2: think this movie is a great example of this question,
- 22:23Speaker 2: do you think that Mario would benefit from extended or
- 22:28Speaker 2: expanded lore or like even a cannon because there will
- 22:31Speaker 2: be like YouTube videos that like look into who is
- 22:33Speaker 2: la Luigi? What it makes up that, right, is he
- 22:37Speaker 2: the anti Luigi? Whereas like, actually speaking of Luigi, like
- 22:40Speaker 2: the two things that we've established about Luigi is that
- 22:44Speaker 2: he's taller and he's a coward.
- 22:46Speaker 1: Yeah, pretty much, which again is all we really know
- 22:49Speaker 1: about Luigia years forty years of Mario, you know what?
- 22:53Speaker 1: And I think you hiss me really cool there on
- 22:55Speaker 1: the head. And it's kind of the fact that like,
- 22:57Speaker 1: because there's no like real nitty gritty lore there is,
- 23:02Speaker 1: They're like, yes, there's always gonna be that YouTube rabbit
- 23:05Speaker 1: hole of like some dude, like there was one a
- 23:07Speaker 1: while ago. I think it was like a Matt pat
- 23:10Speaker 1: with the game theory where he proves that like Rosalina
- 23:13Speaker 1: is Luigi's future daughter or some shit.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Good lord, and again good it's fun.
- 23:18Speaker 1: To theorize it could be true for all we know. Like,
- 23:21Speaker 1: I'm not gonna discredit the work the guy does even
- 23:23Speaker 1: though it is all very much done with a tongue
- 23:25Speaker 1: in cheek of like, yeah, it's a fun theory, but
- 23:27Speaker 1: it's just a theory.
- 23:28Speaker 2: I mean that theory doesn't sound far off from the
- 23:31Speaker 2: things that we just witness in this first Mario movie.
- 23:33Speaker 1: It sounds more sane than things we've seen in this
- 23:36Speaker 1: movie so far. That's like I Rosalina being the future
- 23:41Speaker 1: daughter of Luigi versus Dino Hatton in the Mario lore.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Because in my head, I think they're the same.
- 23:51Speaker 1: That's where Luigi went back in time and had rose. Anyways,
- 23:55Speaker 1: but I think that's what makes the Mario franchise so malleable.
- 23:58Speaker 1: And it's kind of the same thing when you look
- 23:59Speaker 1: at like, like you know, there's always like I feel like
- 24:02Speaker 1: the rumor circulars every few years, like, oh, there's a
- 24:04Speaker 1: pac Man movie in the works, and it's like, what
- 24:06Speaker 1: are you doing with a pac Man movie? Like, what
- 24:08Speaker 1: is pac Man the movie? Yeah, because all we know
- 24:11Speaker 1: about pac Man is he gobble ball Sometimes gobble ghost
- 24:15Speaker 1: ghosts try to kill pac Man. Pac Man has wife
- 24:18Speaker 1: and kid, Like, all, great, you've just described a person
- 24:23Speaker 1: who's afraid of ghosts and takes drugs.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Hey, that's Luigi. As much as we know about it.
- 24:30Speaker 1: Luigi's mentioned is secretly what was supposed to be the
- 24:32Speaker 1: pac Man movie. Yeah, I watched that movie.
- 24:36Speaker 2: Yeah, this is an interesting one to start off with, really,
- 24:39Speaker 2: and truly it really wasn't what I was expecting at all,
- 24:42Speaker 2: considering it's infamy within the internet. And I'm I think
- 24:46Speaker 2: it's a great one to start off with because she's
- 24:48Speaker 2: just so weird and so interesting. Because I like it,
- 24:53Speaker 2: but not for the reasons that I'm supposed to like
- 24:54Speaker 2: it for. You know, it's it's a fascinating film.
- 24:58Speaker 1: It's you know what. Someone while describing this podcast to
- 25:02Speaker 1: a few friends and like getting has a hype and
- 25:04Speaker 1: conversation going about it because obviously good list of this,
- 25:07Speaker 1: I realized, like this movie is right up there, and
- 25:09Speaker 1: I don't want to give it like the credit that
- 25:12Speaker 1: I'm giving it right now because it sounds like I'm
- 25:13Speaker 1: praising it more than I should.
- 25:14Speaker 2: Be best movie ever top ten. It's only down here
- 25:18Speaker 2: for here game.
- 25:20Speaker 1: I mean, honestly, given what else we have coming, there's
- 25:22Speaker 1: a lot of movies I have seen this in this,
- 25:24Speaker 1: like Cannon, that I do enjoy, even if I know
- 25:26Speaker 1: they're not great or I enjoy them because they're can't
- 25:29Speaker 1: be like this, But this feels like the kind of
- 25:31Speaker 1: movie I want to go see, Like I would go
- 25:34Speaker 1: see Rocky Horror. I want to see people in bad costumes.
- 25:38Speaker 1: I want to sit down. I want to have an
- 25:39Speaker 1: MC shouting shit out as we're all watching it. I
- 25:42Speaker 1: want to you know, throw mushrooms at the screen whenever
- 25:45Speaker 1: the King shows up, Like I want the Rocky Horror
- 25:48Speaker 1: experience for this movie.
- 25:51Speaker 2: Heck, dude, I totally totally agree with that, Like I.
- 25:55Speaker 1: Would show up dresses Bob Hoskin and fishnet stockings.
- 25:58Speaker 2: That does E mean have to be like I could
- 26:01Speaker 2: do a backwards cap in fishnet stalkings, Yes, oh no, some.
- 26:06Speaker 1: Of the other things that kind of like I feel
- 26:08Speaker 1: like we're almost like they had to do or like
- 26:11Speaker 1: we actually see them do some plumbing like that to
- 26:13Speaker 1: me is the biggest philmilderment. When they're like in the
- 26:16Speaker 1: building and life for you, well, the fact that they're like, hey,
- 26:19Speaker 1: they're plumbers. Shouldn't we make that at least somewhat relevant,
- 26:23Speaker 1: like kind of like the the Chekhov's wrench of the
- 26:25Speaker 1: movie of like, because they're plumbers, they get this moment,
- 26:29Speaker 1: which is I feel like doesn't pay off because we
- 26:31Speaker 1: never really see it take effect except for the women
- 26:33Speaker 1: are cold for some reason. But like the idea of
- 26:36Speaker 1: like if we chill the whole building, they're reptiles, they're
- 26:39Speaker 1: cold blooded, they'll be sluggish and slow and like fall asleep,
- 26:43Speaker 1: because that's a real thing lizards do. They're cold blooded creatures.
- 26:46Speaker 1: So like one just knowing that and then having the
- 26:50Speaker 1: plumbing equipment to turn off the heating and the building.
- 26:53Speaker 1: I like, it's one of those scenes I had forgotten
- 26:55Speaker 1: because again this has been years since I've seen this,
- 26:57Speaker 1: and I was like, oh shit, that's actually really smart. Yes,
- 27:03Speaker 1: maybe you are giving this movie too much. I mean no,
- 27:07Speaker 1: you're absolutely right.
- 27:08Speaker 2: Like they thought about certain things, which is really fascinating
- 27:12Speaker 2: that they thought about certain things. And then some other
- 27:15Speaker 2: components of this completely seem like we're written on the
- 27:18Speaker 2: fly or on the day. Oh yeah, like as as
- 27:22Speaker 2: in a segment You're Gonna have it seems like some
- 27:24Speaker 2: people were inebriated. Oh yes, during the process.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Before I get to my list of fun facts about
- 27:30Speaker 1: the movie, one thing I will say to like hamper
- 27:32Speaker 1: My like praise of this is one of the moments
- 27:34Speaker 1: in the movie that just like baffled me the most
- 27:37Speaker 1: is why does defeating King Koopa magically re evolve the
- 27:42Speaker 1: king out of his fungus form. No one else gets
- 27:45Speaker 1: changed back or like reverts or anything. Yeah, just the king,
- 27:48Speaker 1: Like was it a magic spell?
- 27:50Speaker 2: He put on brother.
- 27:53Speaker 1: Program? There was like a there was like an automatic program.
- 27:56Speaker 1: He's like, just in case I die, I want the
- 27:58Speaker 1: king to turn back. So I'm going to change the
- 28:00Speaker 1: programming for this one specifically because I can do that.
- 28:04Speaker 2: For some reason, they thought about this, Drew, I don't
- 28:07Speaker 2: know what you're talking about.
- 28:08Speaker 1: No, this this is like the Disney Princess of like
- 28:11Speaker 1: you defeated the villain and everyone's back to normal, like
- 28:14Speaker 1: all the furniture and beasts house Like it's oh you
- 28:18Speaker 1: you you cured the beast, everyone's cured. No, No, this
- 28:22Speaker 1: is you defeated Koopa. One specific person he affected, just
- 28:26Speaker 1: because they were important, gets to come back because of it.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Not to say the re evolved Toad and the other
- 28:33Speaker 1: gumbas back to their human esque forms, but like they
- 28:37Speaker 1: don't they have to physically go do that. Also. I
- 28:42Speaker 1: just need to share because it's one of those moments
- 28:44Speaker 1: of like, looking at this movie now so many years later,
- 28:47Speaker 1: when they start merging the world, the first thing that
- 28:50Speaker 1: happens is the Twin Towers get destroyed.
- 28:53Speaker 2: Hey, we can't do it.
- 28:56Speaker 1: It's it's just one of those things where it's like
- 28:59Speaker 1: a clily a movie from a time well before that
- 29:02Speaker 1: was like a faux pa on a movie. Yeah, but
- 29:05Speaker 1: I just loved the distinction of like literally it turnes
- 29:08Speaker 1: it into Cooper Tower and a destroyed tower, and then
- 29:11Speaker 1: they turn a dude into a monkey and laugh and
- 29:14Speaker 1: no one is like perturbed by like the towers vanishing
- 29:18Speaker 1: and being destroyed, Like, oh no, the Twin Towers lol. Monkey.
- 29:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I would have loved Dave. But like they became
- 29:25Speaker 2: green tubes. See, that would have been amazing.
- 29:30Speaker 1: I would have loved that if like that's what the
- 29:32Speaker 1: merging was, was like tubes popping out of the ground
- 29:34Speaker 1: and panaglands. Okay, So I do have a list of
- 29:37Speaker 1: some fun facts we can discuss about this movie, and
- 29:39Speaker 1: I don't know if every movie will have as many
- 29:41Speaker 1: as this one did, so kind of the origin of
- 29:43Speaker 1: this movie was the fact that Dustin Hoffman tried to
- 29:46Speaker 1: buy the rights initially in nineteen ninety where he was
- 29:49Speaker 1: gonna star as Mario and he was gonna have Danny
- 29:52Speaker 1: DeVito played Luigi, which I think is the thing we
- 29:54Speaker 1: were robbed of the most. Like leg was Amo, bless him.
- 29:57Speaker 1: Did a great job for what he did. But I
- 30:00Speaker 1: think we all know deep down that Danny de Vito
- 30:02Speaker 1: should have been Luigi.
- 30:03Speaker 2: I think I think it could have worked the other
- 30:05Speaker 2: way around too. You know him as Mario as Vito's
- 30:08Speaker 2: mariof Hoffman as Luigi.
- 30:10Speaker 1: But yeah, we all know that when the time comes,
- 30:13Speaker 1: he'll play warrior right Ario, like even the voice acting
- 30:19Speaker 1: side when they eventually do the sequel to the more
- 30:21Speaker 1: modern CG. Chris Pratt Mario movie, which they like, this
- 30:25Speaker 1: movie left a cliffhanger for a sequel. This one never got.
- 30:28Speaker 1: I think that one will.
- 30:29Speaker 2: Yeah, Buscemi as Wallauigi, please, Oh my god.
- 30:34Speaker 1: Didn't he play star Scream in the New Mario too?
- 30:36Speaker 1: In the New Mario the New Transformers he did, which
- 30:39Speaker 1: is bad to me, is like the greatest casting choice
- 30:41Speaker 1: if you're not gonna get the original voice for it. Yeah. Yeah,
- 30:45Speaker 1: so this, like I said, the scrip was attempted multiple times.
- 30:49Speaker 1: There was like apparently in a point it was gonna
- 30:52Speaker 1: be much more of a serious, like road trip coming
- 30:54Speaker 1: of age movie that apparently was compared to Rainman in
- 30:59Speaker 1: its level of like story and seriousness, and was commonly
- 31:03Speaker 1: referred to as drain Man during the writing. I think
- 31:06Speaker 1: is a big miss inari opportunity.
- 31:08Speaker 2: Big miss. Also that's Hoffmann's influence, right, Like he's like
- 31:11Speaker 2: I did this, yeah movie with Tom Cruise, I can
- 31:14Speaker 2: do it again, And I forgot that was I never
- 31:17Speaker 2: actually saw the original rain Man or the Oh it's
- 31:19Speaker 2: good one of those weird like blank spots in my
- 31:21Speaker 2: movie watching history. Yeah, it's not as good as this movie.
- 31:25Speaker 2: That's crazy. That's crazy.
- 31:28Speaker 1: I've heard different, but also this is insane. Apparently one
- 31:32Speaker 1: of the next revisions of the script for this movie
- 31:34Speaker 1: was almost to do like what Shrek did to Disney,
- 31:36Speaker 1: but in this case doing it to a Wizard of Oz,
- 31:38Speaker 1: where it was like a not a direct parody of
- 31:41Speaker 1: Wizard of Oz, but kind of stealing the same trope
- 31:43Speaker 1: of like being brought to another world where you're the
- 31:46Speaker 1: outsider and like it's an established world, which like you
- 31:49Speaker 1: almost can kind of see that. We don't get the
- 31:52Speaker 1: journey down the yell Over road as much as we
- 31:54Speaker 1: do well like it very much. Is like the Dorsy
- 31:57Speaker 1: of Oz.
- 31:58Speaker 2: There's bricks in Mario.
- 32:00Speaker 1: Yeah, yellow bricks. There we go. It could have been
- 32:01Speaker 1: a little yellow brick row. That would have been perfect.
- 32:03Speaker 2: I don't hate that idea at all. In fact, I'm
- 32:05Speaker 2: quite fascinated by that script idea.
- 32:07Speaker 1: Yeah. Well so apparently some of them are available online.
- 32:10Speaker 1: I'm not sure which ones are how to find them,
- 32:11Speaker 1: but like I've heard rumors that they're like you can
- 32:13Speaker 1: read these if you look over to look apparently. Another
- 32:17Speaker 1: take on the movie was that this was supposed to
- 32:19Speaker 1: act as a spiritual prequel to the Mario franchise, as
- 32:24Speaker 1: in this movie is what really happened that inspired the
- 32:27Speaker 1: Nintendo Corporation to make the video games?
- 32:31Speaker 2: Oh like a like a light Year situation, which exactly.
- 32:36Speaker 1: Also, I'm usually so good on my Pixar movies. It's
- 32:40Speaker 1: the only one I'm missing I haven't.
- 32:41Speaker 2: Seen again, you're not missing out. And two crazy things
- 32:44Speaker 2: to say, this movie is better than light Year. H
- 32:47Speaker 2: not ironic, not what I said with the rain.
- 32:49Speaker 1: Honestly, what I've heard of light Year, I believe that.
- 32:52Speaker 2: Yeah, but that's really interesting that that idea has been
- 32:54Speaker 2: spun out of like it's not the first time, and
- 32:58Speaker 2: it's so convoluted. It says, this is the thing that
- 33:02Speaker 2: inspired the people to do a separate thing, not this
- 33:06Speaker 2: is the immediate prequel to Mario. Yeah, but rather it's
- 33:10Speaker 2: saying that someone at Nintendo watched this movie and then
- 33:15Speaker 2: created the Mario universe, or.
- 33:18Speaker 1: Or like this is this is the true story of Mario.
- 33:20Speaker 1: That like, that is a real story that inspired Nintendo
- 33:25Speaker 1: to make the games, and we're just making a movie
- 33:27Speaker 1: of that true story. Oh God, like that this whole
- 33:30Speaker 1: thing like is in the Lord Mario that we don't
- 33:32Speaker 1: know about the games, haven't gotten to it covered yet,
- 33:35Speaker 1: and we're now seeing it in film form.
- 33:37Speaker 2: I'm wondering if the acronym KISS, which is famously keep
- 33:40Speaker 2: it oh yeah stupid, was not invented until two thousand
- 33:43Speaker 2: and one.
- 33:45Speaker 1: Or like maybe just like a day or two after
- 33:47Speaker 1: this movie released, someone was.
- 33:48Speaker 2: Like, kiss, Yeah, they're just coked up from the eighties
- 33:51Speaker 2: and it carried on to the nineties, you know.
- 33:53Speaker 1: Well, speaking of coked up. Actually, yeah, so this movie
- 33:57Speaker 1: was actually like right for filming began, like they were
- 34:01Speaker 1: getting all the actors out, they were getting ready to
- 34:03Speaker 1: start filming, Disney bought the distribution rights for it and
- 34:08Speaker 1: then demanded like heavy rewrights to like make it more
- 34:11Speaker 1: family friendly. Like I'm not sure what really got removed,
- 34:15Speaker 1: but like I get maybe some of the fight scenes
- 34:17Speaker 1: or maybe some of the romance or some of the
- 34:19Speaker 1: like language or like fighting had to be reduced to
- 34:23Speaker 1: make it more like Disney approachable. So apparently when they
- 34:28Speaker 1: got to set and they were like, here's the script,
- 34:29Speaker 1: and they're like, this isn't what I signed on for.
- 34:32Speaker 1: This is drastically different.
- 34:34Speaker 2: Yeah, so they backed out after that, or they still
- 34:37Speaker 2: retained the distribute.
- 34:38Speaker 1: Everyone was already on contract and was stuck with it.
- 34:40Speaker 1: It was just like the rewrights were heavy enough that
- 34:42Speaker 1: it was like, oh, this one from being like maybe
- 34:45Speaker 1: on par with like Die Hard level of grittiness to like,
- 34:48Speaker 1: you know, the parent trap or like Home Alone grittiness.
- 34:52Speaker 2: That trivia tells me that student because again Nintendo also
- 34:56Speaker 2: didn't have its like hardcore locked on bible of things
- 35:01Speaker 2: that you have to retain to. That tells me that
- 35:04Speaker 2: corporations were more willing to give freedom, and that might
- 35:08Speaker 2: be the reason why we now live in a hellscape
- 35:10Speaker 2: where corporations are locked on and things are made by committee,
- 35:15Speaker 2: right because they went Remember nineteen eighty three when we
- 35:18Speaker 2: let writers have a crack at stuff. This was awful,
- 35:21Speaker 2: This was terrible. So now we got to lock up
- 35:23Speaker 2: everything and everything has to be test screened and stuff.
- 35:26Speaker 2: So I wonder, I wonder if this is like and
- 35:28Speaker 2: this can't be the catalyst, but I wonder if things
- 35:32Speaker 2: were more lax back then and now we're locked in
- 35:34Speaker 2: in a hellscape where things are vetted and controlled and
- 35:37Speaker 2: written by committee.
- 35:38Speaker 1: Well, I mean even just think about it, Like, when
- 35:40Speaker 1: was the like after this movie, when was the next
- 35:42Speaker 1: time Nintendo let anybody touch one of its franchises to
- 35:45Speaker 1: do something outside of like a game.
- 35:48Speaker 2: Literally twenty twenty three with the next Super Mario Brothers movie.
- 35:50Speaker 1: It's insane, exactly like we've all heard the rumors of
- 35:53Speaker 1: a Zelda movie and we now know that like it
- 35:55Speaker 1: might be happening finally as a Netflix series. Correct, there
- 35:59Speaker 1: was apparently test footage that has never been released. And
- 36:02Speaker 1: I would kill to see a Metroid anime made by
- 36:05Speaker 1: the same guys who did Castlevania. M I'm still hoping
- 36:09Speaker 1: playing that one day that comes out, because I'd be
- 36:11Speaker 1: the best.
- 36:12Speaker 2: Thing ever And beyond this podcast.
- 36:14Speaker 1: Oh, we will get to it. Yeah. So I do
- 36:17Speaker 1: want to bring up an interview from twenty and seven
- 36:19Speaker 1: with Hoskins before he passed away. He was asked what
- 36:22Speaker 1: he considered the worst choice in his acting career, and
- 36:24Speaker 1: his response was super Mario bros. It was a fucking nightmare.
- 36:28Speaker 1: The whole experience was a nightmare. It had a husband
- 36:31Speaker 1: and wife team directing whose arrogance had been mistaken for
- 36:34Speaker 1: talent after so many weeks, their own agent told them
- 36:37Speaker 1: to get off the set. Fucking nightmare, fucking idiots. That
- 36:42Speaker 1: is the exact quote from Hoskins when talking about this clearly,
- 36:47Speaker 1: and my last point to tie in is that apparently
- 36:50Speaker 1: fairly early on in production they realized this movie was
- 36:52Speaker 1: like a shit fire. Yeah, so Hoskins and Leguasamo got
- 36:56Speaker 1: shit faced before every day of filming and drank between takes.
- 37:01Speaker 2: This is what I knew. Yeah, And I'll be honest again,
- 37:03Speaker 2: I don't I don't think it carries a lot. They're
- 37:05Speaker 2: They're wonderful in their exactly and their deliveries. There is
- 37:09Speaker 2: one segment of the movie where I was like, I
- 37:12Speaker 2: could see it there and it's just John like Wasama
- 37:14Speaker 2: going Daisy, Daisy, Daisy, and like, knowing things about film,
- 37:19Speaker 2: he probably had to do that like several takes, so
- 37:23Speaker 2: many times you'd want to get flastered. You couldn't, you
- 37:26Speaker 2: couldn't go through it.
- 37:27Speaker 1: I can only imagine the drinking and that had to
- 37:29Speaker 1: occur before they shot the dance scene in like the club.
- 37:33Speaker 2: There, Yeah, yeah, just like yeah.
- 37:37Speaker 1: Put on this crazy disco oudefit and go like awkwardly
- 37:40Speaker 1: flirt and hit on and yet hit by Big Bertha,
- 37:44Speaker 1: who again, like has been very like vocally stated to
- 37:47Speaker 1: be completely a diversity write in. They were like, oh,
- 37:51Speaker 1: there's no black people in this movie. Oh put a
- 37:53Speaker 1: chick in the disco. Make her And apparently she had
- 37:56Speaker 1: a bigger role in the earlier versions of the script.
- 37:58Speaker 2: Mm hm.
- 38:00Speaker 1: Like the jumpy boots they get, we're supposed to be
- 38:01Speaker 1: much more important because the whole like jumping on things.
- 38:04Speaker 1: Sure yeah again, who knows if that was a violence
- 38:07Speaker 1: removal or just like because I get the effects for that, Like,
- 38:10Speaker 1: while it's clearly just like a wire in the sky
- 38:12Speaker 1: being cg nowt while they're like, like it looks good,
- 38:16Speaker 1: it's a decent practical effect. I like the design of
- 38:18Speaker 1: the boots. There's a weird, fun steampunk like you know,
- 38:23Speaker 1: quite Mario is steampunk, but it works really well.
- 38:25Speaker 2: There's a charm to it, there's a chime to it,
- 38:27Speaker 2: and it's and it says like overall that had there
- 38:30Speaker 2: been this cohesive idea from the beginning, whether it was Hoffman,
- 38:36Speaker 2: ray Man two or whatever, it was right, this could
- 38:39Speaker 2: have been something because there is some charm behind it.
- 38:41Speaker 2: There is some some good play behind it. But I
- 38:44Speaker 2: think the mess of it all is what really creates
- 38:49Speaker 2: this myth in the infamy of how bad this movie is.
- 38:52Speaker 2: But in and of itself, I think there is some charm.
- 38:57Speaker 2: I just don't think it's a good video game. I
- 39:00Speaker 2: don't think it's a good movie.
- 39:01Speaker 1: There you go, like like I want to compare it
- 39:04Speaker 1: to like The Room as like, because I think that's
- 39:06Speaker 1: the like the most recent example of a cult hit movie. Yeah,
- 39:10Speaker 1: but not just because it's shitty, but it's because there's
- 39:13Speaker 1: like this mytho surround it of like this crazy batshit
- 39:17Speaker 1: ut job who put it together, and like all of
- 39:19Speaker 1: the weird interviews he's given and like everyone who's like
- 39:22Speaker 1: talked about being on the movie and how insane it was,
- 39:25Speaker 1: like if this were just made and released and everyone
- 39:27Speaker 1: will like, that's a bad movie and we never got
- 39:30Speaker 1: the behind the scenes, like nonsense we've heard about, or
- 39:33Speaker 1: like the legend and myth as you put it, I
- 39:36Speaker 1: don't think you would hold up the way it does today,
- 39:38Speaker 1: but because you go into it knowing, oh, this is
- 39:42Speaker 1: a trailer park fire, but one that you want to watch. Yeah,
- 39:47Speaker 1: so I have a question. This is something I'm gonna
- 39:49Speaker 1: try to do every episode. I think generally we'll have
- 39:51Speaker 1: a pretty good time doing this.
- 39:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:53Speaker 1: Again, I think the disadvantage here is we have both
- 39:55Speaker 1: seen the next Maria movie many years removed, and while
- 39:59Speaker 1: we will I'll eventually get to that. In this version
- 40:02Speaker 1: of the movie, with the limitations of ninety ninety three knowledge,
- 40:06Speaker 1: what would you have changed in this movie?
- 40:09Speaker 2: I think the core of it is to let go
- 40:12Speaker 2: of this idea of canon, or let go this idea
- 40:16Speaker 2: of fans service, because I think this movie keeping Mario,
- 40:21Speaker 2: keeping Luigi, even keeping Daisy or whatever the keys might be.
- 40:25Speaker 2: But I think when this movie reaches to try to
- 40:28Speaker 2: connect it to the mari universe, i e. The goomba's
- 40:32Speaker 2: looking the way they do, or the bullet bills and
- 40:34Speaker 2: the fungus and so and so forth. I think that's
- 40:36Speaker 2: where it fails. I think you should do that if
- 40:39Speaker 2: you understand your property and understand the essence of what
- 40:43Speaker 2: makes it fun or what makes a character a character.
- 40:46Speaker 2: But otherwise, you know, if you're given a license to
- 40:51Speaker 2: do an adaptation, you should service the story first and
- 40:56Speaker 2: then let the world building come in later. If that
- 40:59Speaker 2: makes any sense, I.
- 41:00Speaker 1: Think that's brilliant. I honestly like going into this, I
- 41:04Speaker 1: had a bit of a different take, but I think
- 41:05Speaker 1: I sure with you a lot harder than I wouldn't
- 41:07Speaker 1: my own take.
- 41:08Speaker 2: Oh.
- 41:09Speaker 1: I think the biggest fault in this movie, the thing
- 41:11Speaker 1: I would change if I had to do it over,
- 41:13Speaker 1: was is aiming at the kids it was meant for.
- 41:16Speaker 1: I think it's again like again knowing what the new
- 41:19Speaker 1: one did. I think that's its biggest success is it
- 41:21Speaker 1: was very much a kid's film. Yeah, and that is
- 41:24Speaker 1: the audience I think you needed to grab with this,
- 41:26Speaker 1: and they missed that mark. Yeah, because I can't imagine
- 41:29Speaker 1: any child in the early nineties. And I think I'm
- 41:33Speaker 1: a good example of this is like this was the
- 41:35Speaker 1: age where like I was super excited to see a
- 41:37Speaker 1: Mario movie, and at the time was very baffled confused
- 41:41Speaker 1: and like I wouldn't say upset or confused by it
- 41:43Speaker 1: like per se, but like I was like, I don't
- 41:45Speaker 1: get this, Like what am I missing? Like this doesn't
- 41:48Speaker 1: like I had a good time because it was an
- 41:49Speaker 1: action movie and it was silly and funny, and I like,
- 41:52Speaker 1: you know, like the goop was dancing in the elevator.
- 41:54Speaker 1: I like the I like Yoshi as a kid, but
- 41:57Speaker 1: like I was like, this isn't what I wanted. This
- 41:59Speaker 1: is what I expected for sure, And I think had
- 42:02Speaker 1: it been done with more of the like kid friendly thing,
- 42:06Speaker 1: almost like try it, Like as much as I love
- 42:09Speaker 1: it for what it is, now, scale back the gritty,
- 42:13Speaker 1: make it more. Even if it was like the dinos
- 42:15Speaker 1: invading Earth so you didn't have to worry about their
- 42:17Speaker 1: version of the world and just like talk about it
- 42:19Speaker 1: in reference and everything took place in like New York,
- 42:22Speaker 1: I think would have been a better take.
- 42:24Speaker 2: Yeah. I don't think our constructive criticism is mutually exclusive either.
- 42:28Speaker 2: I think if you could combine those two ideas into
- 42:30Speaker 2: the movie, it would have been better. So that being said,
- 42:33Speaker 2: now that we fixed the movie, Yeah, how would you
- 42:36Speaker 2: say and I want to ask these two questions moving
- 42:39Speaker 2: forward because I think it'd be really interesting to look
- 42:41Speaker 2: at the history video game movies this way. One, did
- 42:44Speaker 2: you like the movie? Give me a rating scale? But
- 42:47Speaker 2: then also, do you think the movie's a good Like
- 42:51Speaker 2: if you were like, all right, someone's been living on
- 42:53Speaker 2: in the rocks. They have no idea what Mario Brothers is.
- 42:56Speaker 2: Do you think this is a good indication to be like,
- 42:58Speaker 2: just watch this, you'll get it. You'll get the.
- 43:04Speaker 1: I think give it to me.
- 43:07Speaker 2: And because I played Super Mario Odyssey, give it to
- 43:09Speaker 2: me in moons Moons?
- 43:11Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, I'm going to give this a full seven
- 43:15Speaker 1: out of ten moons a standalone film, because I think
- 43:19Speaker 1: this is a fun movie. It's got a good quality.
- 43:22Speaker 1: This is like the perfect like hey, I want to
- 43:24Speaker 1: pop a gummy or like, oh baby, do shrooms and
- 43:28Speaker 1: watch this with a bunch of friends and like turn
- 43:31Speaker 1: into a drinking game, turned into an event party.
- 43:34Speaker 2: Wow, it is a fun, silly nons Mario party.
- 43:38Speaker 1: Oh Mari, how did I miss that one?
- 43:42Speaker 2: A Mario party? Ten?
- 43:44Speaker 1: Yeah, And then your second question, if we're going to
- 43:47Speaker 1: continue with the Moons, how does it do as a
- 43:50Speaker 1: piece of Mario, like translating video game to a movie. Yeah,
- 43:54Speaker 1: I mean one out of ten purely because who did
- 43:58Speaker 1: the names? Basically, yeah, zero is like there's no connection
- 44:02Speaker 1: one is they at least threw in some buzzwords?
- 44:05Speaker 2: Yeah? Absolutely, I love that. I love that. I think
- 44:08Speaker 2: i'd have to agree and.
- 44:10Speaker 1: You same scale. Again. I feel like I feel we're
- 44:13Speaker 1: gonna probably have a lot of these similar votes.
- 44:14Speaker 2: Yeah right, Yeah, I mean, you know, I'll just like
- 44:18Speaker 2: baistically disagree with you. I think I'm gonna give it
- 44:21Speaker 2: like six hundred and sixty seven moons out of eight
- 44:23Speaker 2: hundred from the first question, and then I'll give it.
- 44:27Speaker 2: I'll give it a banana peal or a what's that squid?
- 44:30Speaker 2: You know when you play Mario Kart and you get inked?
- 44:33Speaker 2: Oh the blooper, thank you for knowing that enemy type.
- 44:37Speaker 2: That's awesome. I'll give it a blooper for.
- 44:40Speaker 1: Honestly, I think blooper is the most definitive description of
- 44:43Speaker 1: this movie I've ever heard. Oh the blooper of movies.
- 44:47Speaker 2: Awesome, awesome, and that's our that's our number one, that's
- 44:49Speaker 2: our starting off.
- 44:50Speaker 1: Oh my god. Yes, But yeah, like I think we
- 44:53Speaker 1: both agree, Like if you're listening to this podcast and
- 44:55Speaker 1: you've never seen this movie, whether because you've heard it
- 44:58Speaker 1: was shit or just like like a lot of people
- 45:01Speaker 1: didn't know it was a movie. Honestly, invite a friend
- 45:06Speaker 1: or two over, pop, open a bottle of wine or something.
- 45:08Speaker 1: Make a drinking game out of like every time they
- 45:10Speaker 1: reference something like stupidly tied to the series. Somehow you
- 45:15Speaker 1: won't get too drunk, but you'll have a good time.
- 45:31Speaker 1: Welcome to the wrong seats, you fools.
- 45:37Speaker 4: Your usual it is, But because you guys are on
- 45:40Speaker 4: opposite sides, I suddenly don't know where to be in.
- 45:42Speaker 1: My own seat. This it's like in Marrio Kart. You're
- 45:48Speaker 1: in the mirror mode of the track.
- 45:52Speaker 2: Oh yeah, we should be yeah, oh if we're in
- 45:58Speaker 2: this doesn't have the stand recording. But if we were,
- 46:00Speaker 2: if we were a Mario party right now, Who's who's
- 46:02Speaker 2: your avatars? Who's your icons? You're choosing?
- 46:06Speaker 5: Look, I love Yoshi?
- 46:08Speaker 2: You do love Yoshi? Yeah?
- 46:10Speaker 1: What color?
- 46:12Speaker 5: That's a very good question.
- 46:13Speaker 2: That's racist.
- 46:16Speaker 1: It's racist. If he doesn't pick the black yard picks
- 46:18Speaker 1: black Yoshi. It's fine.
- 46:19Speaker 2: I don't even though there was a black Yoshi. So
- 46:21Speaker 2: I'm the real racist. I didn't know there was one.
- 46:24Speaker 5: In that case.
- 46:25Speaker 1: I'm picking what Mike is a bit low Audre sounds fine,
- 46:31Speaker 1: but you're a bit low.
- 46:32Speaker 5: Oh yep, I had on. Yeah there.
- 46:36Speaker 1: You said. Now you sound like Matt. I do want
- 46:39Speaker 1: to finish that round table though. So who's everyone's character
- 46:41Speaker 1: in Mary and Maria Carter Mario Party. So we have
- 46:43Speaker 1: a Yoshi.
- 46:45Speaker 5: Probably Wall.
- 46:48Speaker 2: That as villainI as Yeah, I'm usually one of the animals.
- 46:54Speaker 2: I'm either Yoshi or.
- 46:55Speaker 1: D k Nice. Oh yeah, yeah, when available. I do
- 46:59Speaker 1: like Burdo, but in the more recent games, I'll take
- 47:02Speaker 1: any of the Koplings. I love those guys. Oh yeah,
- 47:06Speaker 1: specifically go for Morton with the glasses. He just sings.
- 47:11Speaker 3: The guy.
- 47:12Speaker 2: So now that we chose our avatars, I think we
- 47:14Speaker 2: can play a game.
- 47:16Speaker 1: There we go, We're giving it. That's wow, we secretly
- 47:20Speaker 1: loaded you into a game without you realizing it. So
- 47:24Speaker 1: this this game I have called Mushroom Kingdom or Mushroom
- 47:28Speaker 1: Trip it is. It is a true fall style game
- 47:32Speaker 1: where I'm gonna give you, We're gonna take turns, giving
- 47:34Speaker 1: you scenes from the movie that you have neither of
- 47:37Speaker 1: you have seen. As you stated, previously, and you will
- 47:40Speaker 1: have to tell us whether you think this scene actually
- 47:42Speaker 1: does take place in the movie or was it something
- 47:44Speaker 1: I thought up on a mushroom trip.
- 47:47Speaker 5: Fantastic, Yeah, this is excellent.
- 47:50Speaker 1: I will take the first one. Luigi evades some enemy
- 47:53Speaker 1: soldiers by making them dance to elevator music. Somehow none
- 47:57Speaker 1: of these devolved goons noticed the mustachio man swinging their
- 48:01Speaker 1: hips from side to side to lull them into a dance. Again,
- 48:05Speaker 1: does that happen in this movie?
- 48:07Speaker 5: Yeah, already we're off to a wild stars. Yes, it
- 48:11Speaker 5: does sound like sort of classic. I mean, I don't
- 48:14Speaker 5: even know what decad this movie was made, so, but
- 48:17Speaker 5: it sounds like that, like late eighties, early nineties, kind
- 48:19Speaker 5: of like high jinks.
- 48:22Speaker 2: You've nailed it. Nineteen ninety three is when this ninety three?
- 48:26Speaker 5: We'll just make them dance.
- 48:27Speaker 4: Yeah, the rhythm of our hips will lull them into dancing.
- 48:33Speaker 5: But you say, the soldiers, soldiers.
- 48:36Speaker 1: These these are these are soldiers in an elevator.
- 48:39Speaker 5: I know so little about this. Are we working as
- 48:45Speaker 5: a as a.
- 48:45Speaker 1: Ten team or I'm letting you you can both. You
- 48:47Speaker 1: can both give your own answers. You can pick the
- 48:49Speaker 1: same thing. If you want, but you know there will.
- 48:50Speaker 5: Be okay, okay, Well, i'm going to say this happened.
- 48:55Speaker 4: I'm gonna say it did not. I'm gonna say you're
- 48:57Speaker 4: coming in hot with something wild.
- 49:00Speaker 1: Well, I will reveal that the first point we'll go to, Matt,
- 49:03Speaker 1: this does absolutely happen. Yes, Dunes or, as the movie
- 49:07Speaker 1: calls goombas, they're just giant dudes and trench coats with
- 49:09Speaker 1: little tiny dino heads and Walder in the elevator. He
- 49:12Speaker 1: just crouches behind him and starts swaying their hips to
- 49:15Speaker 1: the elevator music. Yeah, they all start dancing and they
- 49:17Speaker 1: can escape.
- 49:19Speaker 5: Because why not?
- 49:20Speaker 2: Yea, why not?
- 49:23Speaker 1: You know, just like in the games when you make
- 49:25Speaker 1: the goombas that are big lizard men dance.
- 49:29Speaker 5: Yeah, you can get away with anything.
- 49:31Speaker 2: I literally have a note in my notes that says,
- 49:34Speaker 2: elevator scene kind of funny goombas.
- 49:36Speaker 1: Oh yeah, and it's not the most endearing moment for
- 49:40Speaker 1: those groombas.
- 49:41Speaker 2: Yeah, all right. For your second question, the character Big Bertha,
- 49:45Speaker 2: in a bizarre remnant of a previous script, steals Mario
- 49:48Speaker 2: and Luigi's cart and they must dance battle her to
- 49:51Speaker 2: win it back.
- 49:52Speaker 5: Oh. Interesting, big big Bertha. I don't don't remember that
- 49:56Speaker 5: character from the Yeah, the old lineup that that's what
- 50:00Speaker 5: I call big.
- 50:03Speaker 2: Yeah, her snoot, just her snoots, big berth.
- 50:08Speaker 5: Oh you're rocking a big buffa.
- 50:10Speaker 1: How do you think she.
- 50:11Speaker 2: Got that diamond on her ring on her finger? Oh? God,
- 50:14Speaker 2: she's got she's got a ring on her finger. In
- 50:15Speaker 2: Mario Party, I.
- 50:17Speaker 4: Feel like I'm gonna I'm gonna say this is real.
- 50:20Speaker 4: My understanding of what could have happened in this film
- 50:24Speaker 4: was shattered so early.
- 50:28Speaker 1: I think you're on the right track. A. Yeah, you're
- 50:30Speaker 1: you're you're understanding this movie shattered from the moment it
- 50:33Speaker 1: was a movie.
- 50:36Speaker 5: And I'm gonna I'm gonna say this is not real. Uh,
- 50:40Speaker 5: just because I'll just said the opposite.
- 50:42Speaker 2: I love this gaming. We should do this a gate leapers.
- 50:45Speaker 2: So that's another point for matt uh and I have here.
- 50:49Speaker 2: She is a real character. In the movie, Mario seduce
- 50:53Speaker 2: battles her.
- 50:54Speaker 4: He just.
- 50:56Speaker 2: Rolls that seduction role.
- 50:58Speaker 1: We get a really weird seduction thing. She hits him,
- 51:01Speaker 1: and then he compliments her hitting him and says, do
- 51:03Speaker 1: it again, and then she's like I'm into you now.
- 51:06Speaker 5: Oho, all right, kinky.
- 51:08Speaker 4: Yeah, just another member of the BDSM community. We're finding
- 51:12Speaker 4: so many of these, that's incredible.
- 51:14Speaker 1: Yep, BDSM Mario, he stands for Burdo.
- 51:22Speaker 5: Sorry, I'm absolutely ready for the third.
- 51:27Speaker 1: So, Daisy's father is a massive amount of goop covering
- 51:31Speaker 1: every inch of dinohattan, which is the word this movie
- 51:33Speaker 1: takes place. Despite this fact, Luigi tries to shake his
- 51:36Speaker 1: hand as he is clearly crushing on his daughter Daisy. Okay, goop,
- 51:42Speaker 1: Daisy's father, giant pile of goop. Luigi tries to shake
- 51:45Speaker 1: his hand as in like Gwyneth's toxic mess as toxic
- 51:50Speaker 1: but actual, Okay, some sort of fungal, gluttonous mass.
- 51:57Speaker 4: You know, I've leaned into saying that it's true and false.
- 52:07Speaker 4: If I just let's say false, because I don't want
- 52:11Speaker 4: it to be true.
- 52:14Speaker 1: The power of belief.
- 52:15Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm also going to say false for this one.
- 52:18Speaker 5: I'm going to agree with Aldra. I think this could
- 52:21Speaker 5: It sounds like high Jinks from the first one, but
- 52:22Speaker 5: possibly meda Hi jinks.
- 52:25Speaker 1: Well, I do love your commitment to each other and
- 52:27Speaker 1: your answers even when they're wrong. They the king of
- 52:32Speaker 1: this kingdom before Cooper took over, got turned into a
- 52:35Speaker 1: giant fungal mass, and despite being a literal inaminate pile
- 52:39Speaker 1: of goo, Luigi is like, nice to meet you, I
- 52:41Speaker 1: love your daughter.
- 52:42Speaker 5: Yeah, this is what did they not think to just
- 52:45Speaker 5: make a movie where they sort of jump over a
- 52:47Speaker 5: few blocks and that.
- 52:49Speaker 1: We needed as Jason I described a what virtual predecessor
- 52:54Speaker 1: to the clickers from uh.
- 52:56Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, gosh, it truly is that?
- 52:59Speaker 4: Also, I would like we didn't call it a goopa, Like,
- 53:02Speaker 4: what what is it? Missed opportunity with these filmmakers.
- 53:07Speaker 1: I think it's referred to as a pile of snot
- 53:10Speaker 1: at some point in the movie. But he's essentially just
- 53:14Speaker 1: like a massive, a massive web of fungus that takes
- 53:18Speaker 1: over the city.
- 53:19Speaker 2: Okay, wild it's good stuff, you know, like in the games.
- 53:24Speaker 5: Yeah, just like the games.
- 53:26Speaker 2: Now let's go into the fourth question here. The movie
- 53:29Speaker 2: features Yoshi for maybe twelve seconds of screen time, but
- 53:33Speaker 2: devoted nine puppeteers to maneuver. Said Yoshi, Okay, he was
- 53:38Speaker 2: going to be grogu nine is for what twelve seconds
- 53:45Speaker 2: of yeah screen, you tell me how.
- 53:47Speaker 5: Big the Yoshi? Good question?
- 53:50Speaker 1: I want to say, like the size you'd expect a
- 53:52Speaker 1: Yoshi would be arbitrary. I don't know, like medium, medium
- 53:57Speaker 1: to small dog.
- 53:59Speaker 5: Okay, we get Bananafa scale on the Yoshi. Okay, No,
- 54:07Speaker 5: not that genuinely helps. Okay, God, I'm gonna say false.
- 54:13Speaker 5: I'm gonna say that they didn't get nine is to
- 54:16Speaker 5: I'm also gonna say false, just in case.
- 54:20Speaker 4: I'm gonna I'm gonna stick with my guns. I'm gonna
- 54:22Speaker 4: say false. There is a thing where they're idiots and
- 54:24Speaker 4: they needed nine people to do this when it didn't
- 54:27Speaker 4: take nine people to do this, which is so reasonable
- 54:31Speaker 4: for what I'm learning about this film that they could
- 54:34Speaker 4: have just been dumb and not known how to do
- 54:36Speaker 4: it with two people. But I'm gonna I'm gonna give
- 54:39Speaker 4: him a little bit more credit.
- 54:40Speaker 2: I'd love for you guys to watch this movie because
- 54:42Speaker 2: it's true. It's absolutely true, and it's not It doesn't do.
- 54:47Speaker 1: Much literally like it's just it's virtually a background character
- 54:52Speaker 1: for most of the scenes. I think it like bites
- 54:54Speaker 1: a lady off camera once and then gets stabbed.
- 54:57Speaker 5: They were like, we need nine puppets is to be
- 55:00Speaker 5: able to do this.
- 55:02Speaker 1: It was like a super complex puppet.
- 55:04Speaker 5: Oh wow, wild it's like baby Yoda.
- 55:07Speaker 4: You'd be like, mm you, you would need a ton
- 55:09Speaker 4: of people to run this like this is incredible.
- 55:12Speaker 1: Yeah, and again this is ninety three. This is like
- 55:15Speaker 1: early puppet hearing man.
- 55:17Speaker 2: That's true, that's true. Yeah, yeah, yeah, awesome for the puppets. Heers,
- 55:20Speaker 2: terrible for wherever it was in charge of the budget
- 55:22Speaker 2: of this movie.
- 55:23Speaker 1: And again like looking back, like if and when you
- 55:25Speaker 1: do decide to like it gets fucked up and watch
- 55:28Speaker 1: this movie one day. Yeah, an amazing puppet like honestly
- 55:31Speaker 1: probably one of like the starring moments of the movies
- 55:33Speaker 1: that it existed as so well put together. Oh wow,
- 55:36Speaker 1: despite being ultimately useless. Yeah. I number five, the Mayor
- 55:40Speaker 1: of New York is turned into a monkey, simple as that. Yes, okay, god,
- 55:46Speaker 1: monkey man, I like this. I'm just no further analysis.
- 55:50Speaker 1: I'm saying this is true. I want it to be true. Therefore, Yeah,
- 55:55Speaker 1: I was.
- 55:55Speaker 4: Going the same place, absolutely the same place.
- 55:59Speaker 3: It.
- 56:00Speaker 4: If the Mayor of New York has to be a monkey,
- 56:03Speaker 4: that explains Rudy Giuliani. Yeah, just a nonsense man. It
- 56:11Speaker 4: explains a lot of things. If he was turned into
- 56:14Speaker 4: a monkey, well.
- 56:15Speaker 1: Unfortunately, there will be no points for either of you
- 56:17Speaker 1: once again. Well, yes, someone does get turned into a monkey.
- 56:21Speaker 1: It's some minor antagonist from the first eight minutes of
- 56:24Speaker 1: the film that we've completely forgotten about because he's completely irrelevant,
- 56:27Speaker 1: but turning him into a monkey was important for some reason.
- 56:31Speaker 5: Okay, is the mayor of New York in this feature?
- 56:35Speaker 1: Nope? Just some evil tykoo who wants to build a
- 56:38Speaker 1: building in that's what.
- 56:40Speaker 2: No fossil, that is what it is. Okay, all right,
- 56:44Speaker 2: now for your sixth question, King Koopa, who is human
- 56:47Speaker 2: like a dino sapien like their dinosaurs who turned into humans,
- 56:52Speaker 2: evolved into his true form and goes on a city
- 56:54Speaker 2: wrecking rampage before being defeated.
- 56:57Speaker 5: Okay, yeah, big giant.
- 57:00Speaker 2: Is it man like a power up situation?
- 57:02Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 57:02Speaker 5: It goes on a sort of Godzilla city destroying events.
- 57:06Speaker 2: Side No, King Cooper is supposed to be Bowser. Why
- 57:08Speaker 2: didn't go of Bowser? Not sure?
- 57:10Speaker 5: What did they not?
- 57:12Speaker 1: The name they had? All right?
- 57:15Speaker 2: They hired Browser like they had him walked in.
- 57:18Speaker 4: What insane? I want this to be true. I'm gonna
- 57:24Speaker 4: wish it into existence.
- 57:26Speaker 5: I'm gonna say it's not true. I'm gonna say this
- 57:28Speaker 5: didn't happen. Yeah, Matt's got it right there.
- 57:31Speaker 2: It didn't. I de evolved into a t rex then
- 57:36Speaker 2: into oh a goop as.
- 57:41Speaker 1: Yeah, they literally show him as a t rex for
- 57:43Speaker 1: like like a second of shitty CG before he just
- 57:46Speaker 1: bursts into goop.
- 57:48Speaker 5: Oh wow, so like dinosaur person into t rex into goop.
- 57:53Speaker 4: Yes, yes, the evolution of Man, I'm gonna make you
- 57:58Speaker 4: answer first next time. I can do that, because it
- 58:01Speaker 4: seems like every time I'll I'll do an answer and
- 58:04Speaker 4: then you're like, other way.
- 58:06Speaker 5: Look, I got a reputation. God, I'm the game's monster.
- 58:10Speaker 5: I got to win this one. This post one.
- 58:12Speaker 2: That's how Mario Party works. By the way, you could
- 58:13Speaker 2: just be like, no, I'm not going you go.
- 58:17Speaker 1: This is this is the seventh and final question and
- 58:19Speaker 1: after this there'll be some bullshit points hands it out
- 58:21Speaker 1: for I don't know the most times you use the
- 58:25Speaker 1: stickers for some reason while playing this game. That's mad.
- 58:29Speaker 2: He's toxic as hell during Mario Party.
- 58:31Speaker 1: Oh god, what I played with my friends. And the
- 58:33Speaker 1: newer one has like you can do emotes as you're playing. Yeah,
- 58:36Speaker 1: and there's occasionally a star for most emotes. We're all
- 58:39Speaker 1: just spamming the ems.
- 58:42Speaker 2: Up. Dude. I didn't know there was a star for that.
- 58:43Speaker 2: That changes way, dude.
- 58:46Speaker 5: That's why I do.
- 58:49Speaker 1: See Your final question is Mario escapes with his girlfriend
- 58:53Speaker 1: who is not Peach, Daisy or Pauline, is just some
- 58:56Speaker 1: other Brooklyn chick and a bunch of other kidnapped women
- 59:00Speaker 1: on a ice mattress slide.
- 59:03Speaker 5: Okay, joy, I think I know what.
- 59:06Speaker 2: I think.
- 59:07Speaker 4: I think I know this, but I want you to
- 59:08Speaker 4: answer first.
- 59:09Speaker 5: Okay, I'm gonna say it's it's true because they also
- 59:14Speaker 5: have not included other things from Mario, so why would
- 59:17Speaker 5: they include this canonical haream of women?
- 59:23Speaker 4: And I'm gonna say true because I think I've seen
- 59:25Speaker 4: a screenshot of something that looks insane and it has
- 59:29Speaker 4: many of these elements.
- 59:30Speaker 1: So you're both going with true, and you are both
- 59:33Speaker 1: getting a point. Yes, So they freeze a building to
- 59:38Speaker 1: what I assume was to like deal with the dinosaurs
- 59:40Speaker 1: being cold blooded. Never comes up, but they then get
- 59:43Speaker 1: an ice slide to escape on because ice slides are cool,
- 59:47Speaker 1: and yeah, weirdly happened later on in Mario sixty four,
- 59:50Speaker 1: so it like predicted something. Okay, giant, No giant penguin.
- 59:58Speaker 5: I'm sorry penguins.
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: Penguins.
- 1:00:01Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a shame. Always have giant peng wings.
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: Always need giant peng wings. So we have reached the
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: end of our first ever episode and first ever game.
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: We do have a final score with your with your
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: point yes, and Matt the Games Matter will retain his
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: title with a nice four points yes as the first
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: winner of press playing in the game.
- 1:00:22Speaker 5: Thank you. I'm I'm expecting a trophy.
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: I will. I will get that figured out for you.
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: And I've decided just now on a whim. As we
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: are ending this episode, I have a final question for
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: our guests. Will you watch this movie?
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: Oh?
- 1:00:39Speaker 5: That's a very good question. It certainly seems like from
- 1:00:43Speaker 5: the questions and the apt name of the round that
- 1:00:48Speaker 5: I should probably consume some mushrooms or edibles or something
- 1:00:52Speaker 5: and watch this movie because it sounds very psychedelic.
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: I think if I ever tried shrooms for the first time,
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: I wanted to be with you guys and this movie.
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: Okay, that'd be awesome. Also, that answers the question.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: I know what we're doing in a few months.
- 1:01:08Speaker 4: I think I will watch highlights unless we do it,
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: unless we unless we watched it together.
- 1:01:14Speaker 5: I would watch a highlight reel.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: Well, we'll see, we'll see them getting this planned and
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: well making a live feature for our patrons. Oh, thank
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: you for coming on the episode. If somehow you're listening
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: to this but aren't subscribed to the rest of the feed,
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: this is gate leapers. You should be listening and subscribing.
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: I'm plugging and plugging you on your own feed.
- 1:01:36Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I think that's I think that works as
- 1:01:38Speaker 5: we get used to this, multiple shows on the same
- 1:01:40Speaker 5: feed thing. I'm sure it will come. I'll come on actually,
- 1:01:43Speaker 5: but I imagine I'll be doing a similar thing on
- 1:01:45Speaker 5: the on the Pandemonium before your press play, Yeah.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: I appreciate that. Before we come to a close, Jason,
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: anything you want to address our audience with no, uh.
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: No, I've done.
- 1:01:58Speaker 4: I've been addressing them for how for a long now.
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: Honestly, go fuck you, just no smoke bomb.
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: I do that so often if you I think that's
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: my tis thing is people will be like, do you
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: like me? I'll be like, no, I don't anymore, and
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: I just say it plainly. I'm so sorry. I was
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: gonna say something that I forgot. Well, think of an
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: outro that'll.
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: Be We will come up with an outro for the
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: time being. Thank you for listening to the inaugural episode.
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: Any feedback you can reach us on all the socials.

- 1:02:46Speaker 3: Heck you, hell yeah, hell yeah.
- 1:03:00Speaker 5: The Pat
