- 0:09Speaker: Hello and welcome to the Pink Pill Podcast. I'm your host, Mahnoor Mahar. This Podcast started after I applied for a research consultancy at Noor and, as part of the application, wrote about fascism through Barbie the movie. I didn’t get that particular project, but Noor asked if I would like to produce a Podcast for them instead, which I’m really glad they did, because many of the questions Noor is asking are questions I’ve been sitting with for years. I’m a filmmaker and researcher from Pakistan, currently living in the UK, where I moved for my master’s before ending up in international development, a field I’m critical of but one that has made me think deeply about power, decolonisation, and how the civilising mission reshapes itself. Before that, I was making music videos and working on film projects in Pakistan, and I’ve also been involved in feminist organising, first in Pakistan and now more through building South–South solidarities. Noor is a global feminist “think and do” tank that brings together organisers, researchers, thought leaders, and grassroots movements confronting far-right narratives, infrastructures, and political projects. Their work looks at fascisms and fundamentalisms as political projects with economic, social, cultural, and geopolitical dimensions, including the political economy of the resurgent right, digital fascism, authoritarian uses of technology, anti-rights and anti-gender movements, climate and eco-fascism, disinformation, atrocity propaganda, and moral panic. Across the series, I’ll be speaking to researchers, writers, organisers, and thinkers working on these themes as we try to make sense of the world we find ourselves in today, living through and bearing witness to live-streamed wars and genocide, and as we try to imagine and build something beyond the world as it currently is. Huge thanks to Zahra Paracha, who edited and produced the sound for this Podcast and cut down how many times I say “um”, to Hamza Iftikar, who created the gorgeous artwork, and to the entire Noor team for trusting me with this project and supporting the research and production. Thank you so much for listening, and welcome to Pink Pill.
