- 1:56Speaker 1: Real Matchmaker. I always have to pause.
- 1:58Speaker 2: I'm like, is it the That's why I had a
- 2:00Speaker 2: scroll back up to the title Matchmaker. Kate's reputation as
- 2:05Speaker 2: the Queen of Hearts reaches King Edward of Valdavia, who
- 2:10Speaker 2: hires her.
- 2:12Speaker 1: I'm so stunted. I can't believe it actually said Voldavia.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Is that how you say it now in Valdavia?
- 2:21Speaker 1: Oh, it doesn't exist anyway.
- 2:26Speaker 2: He hires her to find his son a bride, but
- 2:30Speaker 2: Prince Sebastian has a mote around his heart and Kate
- 2:34Speaker 2: doesn't see his tender side until he evokes his mother's memory.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Did you Nope? I did not use AI to write that.
- 2:41Speaker 2: That is a copy mpaste from palmarks around his heart?
- 2:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Yeah, Mike role directed Royal Matchmaker. He has an impressive
- 2:51Speaker 1: resume with sixty four directing credits, including When Calls, The
- 2:54Speaker 1: Heart Falling Together, and both the Cases of Mystery Lane movies.
- 2:58Speaker 1: This isn't his only foray into Royal films. He also
- 3:01Speaker 1: directed all three The Princess Switch movies for Netflix. Did
- 3:06Speaker 1: you watch those Buny Chants? I did watch the first one,
- 3:08Speaker 1: I have not seen the entire collection. Mark A.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Motto wrote the screenplay for Royal Matchmaker. He has twenty
- 3:16Speaker 2: nine writing credits, and his last Hallmark movie was A
- 3:19Speaker 2: Kiss Before Christmas in twenty twenty one. He has also
- 3:24Speaker 2: worked on the sitcom series Baby Daddy and The Sweet
- 3:27Speaker 2: Life on Deck.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Bethany joy Lenz, credited only as Joy Lens for this movie,
- 3:32Speaker 1: stars as Kate. This was Bethany's second movie for the network,
- 3:35Speaker 1: following The Christmas Secret in twenty fourteen. Since twenty eighteen,
- 3:39Speaker 1: she's gone on to star and hits like An Unexpected Christmas,
- 3:42Speaker 1: A Biltmore Christmas, and Savoring Paris.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Had you noticed that she was credited as Joylens I did.
- 3:50Speaker 2: I read her book and she talks about going back
- 3:54Speaker 2: and forth between using Bethany Joylins and joylnds, and at
- 3:57Speaker 2: one time used Julins.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Oh, yes, I remember that.
- 4:01Speaker 2: It's really interesting to me that, like, if.
- 4:04Speaker 1: You are a celebrity, why would you be.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Changing your name so much because it's your brand?
- 4:10Speaker 1: Good question, that's all.
- 4:13Speaker 4: Well.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Camp plays Prince Sebastian. Will has forty eight acting credits
- 4:17Speaker 2: and has appeared in several Hallmark favorites like Paging Mister
- 4:21Speaker 2: Darcy and The Christmas Waltz.
- 4:24Speaker 1: What's that face for the next line.
- 4:26Speaker 2: He also appeared in The Princess Switch three, directed by
- 4:30Speaker 2: Mike Roll.
- 4:31Speaker 1: That was my surprise face. I did not know that,
- 4:33Speaker 1: got it? Look, I can't hear the name Sebastian and
- 4:37Speaker 1: not picture the little Marmai. I was just gonna say
- 4:40Speaker 1: the same thing, although what I'm picturing is actually flounder.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Sebastian's the crab. Yeah. Britney Bristow plays assistant in Brittany.
- 4:47Speaker 1: She has fifty acting credits, moving into leading roles in
- 4:50Speaker 1: movies like My Sweet Austrian Holiday co starring Willcamp and
- 4:54Speaker 1: A Safari Romance.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Joseph Thompson plays Valet. Did you know that from the movie? Like,
- 5:03Speaker 2: there was a whole little I did.
- 5:05Speaker 1: I did. Also, I watched down to Nowe where they
- 5:07Speaker 1: use the term valet, so so valet or valet. Which
- 5:11Speaker 1: one is it? I believe it's valette. It's really funny.
- 5:15Speaker 2: He plays Victor Joseph has eighteen acting credits and this
- 5:19Speaker 2: is his only project for Hallmark.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Simon Dutton plays King Edward. He has fifty five acting credits,
- 5:25Speaker 1: but this isn't his only Royal role. He also appeared
- 5:27Speaker 1: in movies like A Christmas Prince, The Royal Wedding and
- 5:30Speaker 1: A Royal Christmas.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Poppy Row plays Victor's love interest Lorraine. She's got twenty
- 5:36Speaker 2: three acting credits, but this is her only project for Hallmark.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Elva Trill plays Petra Petrovic. She's an Irish actor who
- 5:43Speaker 1: has had parts in movies like Jurassic World, Dominion, and
- 5:46Speaker 1: an Alec Baldwin movie from twenty twenty four called Kid Santa.
- 5:49Speaker 1: This appears to be her only project for Hallmark.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Woody Hamilton Hurst plays victor Son Rudy. You should look
- 5:56Speaker 2: him up on IMDb All grown Up Now. This is
- 5:59Speaker 2: his one and only acting project. According to IMDb.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Royal Matchmaker was filmed in Romania. It originally aired in
- 6:06Speaker 1: February twenty eighteen. Let's take a quick break and come
- 6:10Speaker 1: right back with first impressions. Well, I think I may
- 6:22Speaker 1: know the gist of your first impression, But what did
- 6:24Speaker 1: you think of Royal Matchmaker? Maybe I do like Royal
- 6:28Speaker 1: movies and yours. I fear being fresh off a run
- 6:34Speaker 1: of Royal movies puts this movie at a disadvantage in
- 6:37Speaker 1: my mind, A disadvantage. Yeah, Like I was already like
- 6:42Speaker 1: a little royal down. Okay, fair, I didn't say I
- 6:47Speaker 1: judged it based on that. I just said that's my
- 6:49Speaker 1: friend of mine entering the movie. So okay.
- 6:51Speaker 2: That's interesting because when I did see that this made
- 6:54Speaker 2: our fan favorite lineup, I was.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Like, oh my god, we just did three Royal movie.
- 7:00Speaker 2: But this is a movie that the fans have been
- 7:03Speaker 2: asking indeed for many, many, many months. I'm here to
- 7:08Speaker 2: tell you what I liked about it. Are you ready?
- 7:10Speaker 1: I am.
- 7:11Speaker 2: I think I'm a super fan of bey Bethany Joyce.
- 7:14Speaker 4: Same.
- 7:15Speaker 1: She's just so good. She's a really good actor. She's fantastic.
- 7:21Speaker 2: I thought in this role she was down to earth.
- 7:25Speaker 2: She's like warm in her role. She's like clever and
- 7:29Speaker 2: self aware. I just enjoy watching her.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Yeah, she's really good, you know, to my first impression
- 7:39Speaker 1: as mentioned. The recent batt of Royal movies kind of
- 7:41Speaker 1: put me in a place of wanting to compare this
- 7:43Speaker 1: movie to those. However, I do think this movie stands
- 7:47Speaker 1: above the rest, largely due to the role played by
- 7:51Speaker 1: Bethany Joylyns. She elevates this movie. I think there's some
- 7:54Speaker 1: other great elements too. I mean, Will Kemp is no slouch,
- 7:57Speaker 1: but Bethany Joylens is one of the best. You haven't
- 8:02Speaker 1: read her book, right?
- 8:03Speaker 2: No?
- 8:03Speaker 1: Should? I definitely? Okay? Since I have started, I have
- 8:08Speaker 1: started the audio and then I've I don't do a
- 8:10Speaker 1: ton of audio books. I just can't focus on them.
- 8:13Speaker 1: It's not my preferred way of reading, so I never
- 8:16Speaker 1: finished it. I think I should just get like the
- 8:18Speaker 1: ebook and power through it. It's really really good.
- 8:22Speaker 2: And what I got from her book is that I'm
- 8:26Speaker 2: not trying to disparage anybody here, but there is like
- 8:29Speaker 2: a quote Hallmark actor, right, and then you have like.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Other actors who do.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Hallmark movies, and I think she falls in the other
- 8:39Speaker 2: actor who does Hallmark movies. Yes, And I'm not trying
- 8:42Speaker 2: to It's no shade to anybody else, Like I'm.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Not categoric categoric Sam Page.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Like Sam Page. Yes, that's a great example. Like I
- 8:53Speaker 2: want to see Bethany joy Lynds in two movies a
- 8:55Speaker 2: year at least, but I think she chooses not to
- 8:59Speaker 2: do that because I she thinks of herself as like
- 9:03Speaker 2: a different sort of actor.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Huh.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Anyway, read her book, okay, and then.
- 9:09Speaker 1: I would I would be interested to see what.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Your take on how she thinks about herself.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Okay.
- 9:16Speaker 2: Anyway, with all that said, I find her damn delightful
- 9:22Speaker 2: in any character. She plays me too, and it's why
- 9:25Speaker 2: I went back and started watching Wintree Hill after her
- 9:30Speaker 2: book came out, because I just like her so much
- 9:33Speaker 2: and I do see she has these like also side note,
- 9:39Speaker 2: you know, I listen back to our episodes. The number
- 9:42Speaker 2: of times I say like, oh, I.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Know, every time I edit, I think I need I
- 9:47Speaker 1: need to put a post it on my computer while
- 9:49Speaker 1: we're recording these to remind myself not to do it,
- 9:53Speaker 1: and then I forget about it until I'm editing. Yeah,
- 9:55Speaker 1: So apologies everybody for the number of times I say
- 9:59Speaker 1: like and I've probably cut a lot of them out.
- 10:02Speaker 1: It's bad, so bad.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Anyway, what was I saying about her?
- 10:07Speaker 1: She has.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Quirks that I see in each character she plays like
- 10:15Speaker 2: they're like recurring, right, And I feel like, oh, that's
- 10:18Speaker 2: set signature.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Bethany joy Lynn. Yeah, like that's classic b Jail Anyway,
- 10:25Speaker 1: I like her, That's all. One of the things I
- 10:27Speaker 1: liked about this movie is I thought they did a
- 10:29Speaker 1: nice job with the through line of the king just
- 10:33Speaker 1: wanting his son to be happy. It's mentioned very early
- 10:35Speaker 1: on by Victor of the Vallet when Sebastian is complaining
- 10:37Speaker 1: about his father and pushing him to be married, and
- 10:41Speaker 1: Victor says he just wants his son to be happy.
- 10:45Speaker 1: That's not a throwaway line, because we see it mirrored
- 10:47Speaker 1: at the very end of the movie, when the King
- 10:49Speaker 1: shows up to the train station to get Kate and
- 10:51Speaker 1: bring her back, realizing that that's where his son's happiness is,
- 10:55Speaker 1: not in a person who, in theory, is right for him.
- 11:00Speaker 1: And I admit that I tend to think of royal
- 11:04Speaker 1: movies as as a little bit lacking substance, a little
- 11:11Speaker 1: bit lacking some of the stronger storylines, because I think,
- 11:13Speaker 1: and we'll talk about my wishes, I think we lean
- 11:15Speaker 1: on the same things over and over again. But I
- 11:17Speaker 1: thought that was really well carried through the movie in
- 11:23Speaker 1: terms of the king leaning on tradition but leaning more
- 11:27Speaker 1: on the happiness of his sen good look at that
- 11:32Speaker 1: deep thoughts, What else did you like? Well?
- 11:35Speaker 2: I thought bgl and Will Kemp were great together too,
- 11:41Speaker 2: And it makes me wonder if it's if it's Bethany
- 11:46Speaker 2: joy Lands that elevates Yeah, is it the BJL effect.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Maybe when they're having a conversation and Will Sebastian says,
- 11:56Speaker 1: just tell me what to do, m M, and she's
- 11:58Speaker 1: like that, that's not my job. I can't do that.
- 12:01Speaker 1: The look in his eyes, there's so much emotion in
- 12:04Speaker 1: that scene between the.
- 12:05Speaker 4: Two of those.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Yeah, that's great.
- 12:08Speaker 2: But I want to say, I don't think that Will
- 12:11Speaker 2: Kemp is a bad I like many of his movies
- 12:15Speaker 2: that he's in. But when I think about an Unexpected Christmas,
- 12:21Speaker 2: is that the one Bethanye is in with Tyler? Tyler
- 12:24Speaker 2: great movie. Obviously it built more Christmas. Great movie. So
- 12:29Speaker 2: I'm just wondering if they're yeah.
- 12:31Speaker 1: A built More Christmas would have been a very different movie.
- 12:33Speaker 1: I think with two different actors, are you know? I mean,
- 12:36Speaker 1: look at Will Kemp. Will Kemp in a Christmas Waltz.
- 12:39Speaker 1: That's one of our favorite movies. But again, he's across
- 12:42Speaker 1: Lacey Shaver, who is an absolute freaking pro. Yeah. Yeah, yeah,
- 12:45Speaker 1: I'm not knocking Will Kemp either, but I do think
- 12:50Speaker 1: I think more importantly here, pairing these actors matter. So
- 12:56Speaker 1: I think when you get two actors that work so
- 12:58Speaker 1: nicely together, that's part of why we love it so much. Yeah, exactly,
- 13:04Speaker 1: did you have any more likes? A few more?
- 13:06Speaker 2: I thought, Okay, this is gonna sound like a wish,
- 13:09Speaker 2: but it is classically Hallmark Royal trope extravaganza totally. But
- 13:18Speaker 2: for me, I liked as I was like, putting these
- 13:24Speaker 2: notes together, this is my butt.
- 13:26Speaker 1: For me, I liked.
- 13:27Speaker 2: I liked that the focus was on Kate and like
- 13:31Speaker 2: her reputation as this matchmaker. And then I thought, but wait,
- 13:35Speaker 2: that's also very much a classic Hallmark trope of like her.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Job is going to be on the line.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Sure, so part of me felt like, oh, this is
- 13:45Speaker 2: like a fresh take, but really it's not.
- 13:47Speaker 1: But even that said, it's still like all kind of
- 13:50Speaker 1: worked for me. I think the movie worked.
- 13:53Speaker 2: I just go back to I think breath Andy Joy
- 13:57Speaker 2: just really sold it for me. I don't think I
- 14:00Speaker 2: would have liked it otherwise. Yeah, that's fair because the
- 14:03Speaker 2: story is not something. It's not North to Home, it's
- 14:06Speaker 2: not one summer, you know what I mean, it's not. No,
- 14:08Speaker 2: the story's very classic the story.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Yes, right.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Also, two more things I liked. I really enjoyed Britney
- 14:15Speaker 2: Bristow in this movie.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Oh yeah, me too.
- 14:18Speaker 2: She's not one I find like super remarkable in other movies.
- 14:24Speaker 2: I really liked her in this movie.
- 14:25Speaker 1: And I liked that.
- 14:27Speaker 2: I thought there was gonna be a romantic pairing between
- 14:30Speaker 2: her and Victor me too, and it wasn't.
- 14:32Speaker 4: And it wasn't.
- 14:33Speaker 1: I just enjoyed that. I was so pleasantly surprised by that.
- 14:37Speaker 1: The final thing that I liked is they style Kate
- 14:40Speaker 1: so well. Her clothing, Yes, ma'am. Great a plus I
- 14:44Speaker 1: wrote great cross costume, great wardrobes, let's stuck wishes. Okay,
- 14:50Speaker 1: since you just mentioned Brittany Bristow, I want to talk
- 14:52Speaker 1: about I needed more from her character. Are you reading
- 14:56Speaker 1: my notes right now?
- 14:58Speaker 4: Now?
- 14:58Speaker 1: I was really I wrote this down. I was like,
- 15:00Speaker 1: wait a minute, she plays the best friend, the assistant
- 15:02Speaker 1: to help her, Like, it's fine that she doesn't have
- 15:04Speaker 1: much to do, but I wanted her to have more
- 15:06Speaker 1: to do when she shows up. Am I just taking
- 15:09Speaker 1: the words out of your mouth? Look? I also thought like,
- 15:13Speaker 1: she's gonna have a little relationship with Victor that's going
- 15:15Speaker 1: to be so cute, And then Victor has the relationship
- 15:17Speaker 1: with the other lady, which is fine. I was like, wait,
- 15:21Speaker 1: what about Brittany? Is this for Britney?
- 15:23Speaker 4: Yes?
- 15:24Speaker 1: I really wanted her to be. She's a great supportive,
- 15:27Speaker 1: best friend assistant. She plays the role she points out
- 15:30Speaker 1: when she's like, yo, you're in love with him. She's
- 15:33Speaker 1: the perfect role for that, like she filled the need. Yep,
- 15:38Speaker 1: but I wanted her to be more than just the
- 15:40Speaker 1: person who moves Kate's storyline forward. Those are my thoughts exactly.
- 15:44Speaker 2: Hey, that's I would like to add onto it. I
- 15:47Speaker 2: was a little bit annoyed that they thought by adding
- 15:51Speaker 2: glasses to Brittany made her more intellectual, like more like like.
- 15:57Speaker 1: She's she's not the sassy love interest because she's wearing
- 16:00Speaker 1: glasses and therefore is less attractive.
- 16:02Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I didn't love that. I mean, obviously she's
- 16:06Speaker 2: a stunner. Yeah, so like, let's put some dark framed
- 16:10Speaker 2: glasses on her and make her like.
- 16:11Speaker 1: Really hot blonde and real, we'll distract people from the
- 16:14Speaker 1: fact that she should have Yeah, she has nobody interested
- 16:17Speaker 1: in her romantically.
- 16:18Speaker 2: Yeah, but anyway, I did enjoy her as the best
- 16:22Speaker 2: friend assistant situation.
- 16:24Speaker 1: So you kind of talked about how this movie was
- 16:27Speaker 1: a little bit trope tastic, and I think one of
- 16:30Speaker 1: the things that I complained about in our previous movies
- 16:32Speaker 1: is we do have the same basic conflict here and
- 16:35Speaker 1: it's it's echoed. We're working on getting the royal person
- 16:38Speaker 1: in the right place in their life to accept their
- 16:40Speaker 1: royal role. And now this movie works for me. But again,
- 16:43Speaker 1: the background story is like, do more mm hmm, check
- 16:48Speaker 1: it up just a little bit.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I have a question for you about not just
- 16:52Speaker 2: royal movies. But I was thinking about this during last
- 16:56Speaker 2: month's Royal Trifecta and now this movie. Does Hallmark have
- 17:02Speaker 2: movies that are set in let's say Europe that are
- 17:08Speaker 2: not royal, Like, can we do we just have like
- 17:11Speaker 2: a community, a town the royal aspects taken out of it?
- 17:16Speaker 1: Can you think of anything off the top of your Yeah,
- 17:18Speaker 1: what's that movie with Gina Claire Mason, Heidi Heidelberg a
- 17:22Speaker 1: Heidelerg Holiday? Okay, we had all of those movies on
- 17:27Speaker 1: the boat. Yeah, the Danube movies. Okay, we always have
- 17:32Speaker 1: Savoring Paris. There's We Had, All You're Right, Love and Honey,
- 17:37Speaker 1: all those, all those Europeans set movies. There's tons of
- 17:40Speaker 1: European Christmas in Vienna. Okay, you are right, Yes they exist. Okay,
- 17:45Speaker 1: I'm like, maybe I don't watch them, but I have
- 17:47Speaker 1: seen many of those. So look, I thought Will and
- 17:51Speaker 1: Kate had great chemistry. I did want more relationship developments.
- 17:54Speaker 1: Call them Will and Kate. Her character's name is Kate,
- 17:58Speaker 1: his actual real name is Will. My notes say Sebastian
- 18:03Speaker 1: and Kate. I don't know why I said Will and Kate. Yes,
- 18:07Speaker 1: I thought Will and Bethany had great chemistry, but I
- 18:11Speaker 1: wanted more relationship development between Sebastian and Kate. The scenes
- 18:15Speaker 1: they have are great and sincere I mentioned that earlier
- 18:18Speaker 1: scene where Sebastian's like, tell me what to do, where
- 18:22Speaker 1: he's really asking her to tell him that she has
- 18:25Speaker 1: feelings for him too, Like he wants her to say, no,
- 18:30Speaker 1: don't do it, because I like you too. But I
- 18:34Speaker 1: worry that we just didn't see enough. I believed it
- 18:36Speaker 1: in that scene. They sold it to me. But I
- 18:38Speaker 1: just worried we didn't really see enough of their relationship
- 18:41Speaker 1: development to get to what my biggest wish is is,
- 18:44Speaker 1: please don't propose. Oh my notes say that proposal.
- 18:49Speaker 2: No too fast, way too It's been yeah, but he's
- 18:54Speaker 2: going on these dates where he's may proposed to Petra Petrov.
- 19:00Speaker 1: Like, oh, but we've already determined that that model isn't
- 19:04Speaker 1: going to work, So why do we not allow him
- 19:06Speaker 1: to develop a genuine Roman? These are fair thoughts? What
- 19:10Speaker 1: else did you wish for? That's it all right? Time
- 19:12Speaker 1: for digitsu that I have?
- 19:14Speaker 2: But one Okay, early on they're showing Kate's match making
- 19:18Speaker 2: website and there's a photo of her. Yeah, she's wearing
- 19:21Speaker 2: like a light blue silk shirt and she's holding a teacup.
- 19:25Speaker 2: Later in the movie she's wearing that exact same outfit.
- 19:29Speaker 2: So they obviously like took snow from that day on
- 19:32Speaker 2: set and then use that on the website because I
- 19:35Speaker 2: thought it was interesting. I was like, why would she
- 19:36Speaker 2: be holding a tea cup? That's like so random, huh
- 19:40Speaker 2: for a match making website? Why are we holding coffee
- 19:43Speaker 2: cups in our headshots?
- 19:45Speaker 1: That's fair? Just like give you something to do with
- 19:48Speaker 1: your hands. But anyway, yes, what about you? Just two
- 19:52Speaker 1: very little things. One, there's a moment where she's walking
- 19:56Speaker 1: Beth and a joy Lands and Will are walking and
- 19:59Speaker 1: they're on the cobblestone streets and she's in these stilettos
- 20:01Speaker 1: and you can kind of see her carefully placing her feet.
- 20:04Speaker 1: But I just thought, she's a brave, brave, brave lady
- 20:06Speaker 1: walking down those streets and those shoes.
- 20:08Speaker 2: That's so funny. I just remembered one since you brought
- 20:11Speaker 2: that up. I saw her heels get caught up on
- 20:14Speaker 2: a rug at one point, and like she like kicked
- 20:17Speaker 2: it back.
- 20:18Speaker 1: I saw, you know, she's just you know, she's just good.
- 20:22Speaker 1: She's just good. And my final did to see that
- 20:25Speaker 1: is another styling note. She wears a pink and red
- 20:28Speaker 1: blouse and pants situation that's very reminiscent of that dress
- 20:32Speaker 1: she wears and savoring Paris. It is pink and red,
- 20:34Speaker 1: it's the same shades. It's a good color combo on her. Yeah,
- 20:38Speaker 1: what did you rate? Royal Matchmaker?
- 20:41Speaker 2: I gave it four point seven five stars.
- 20:43Speaker 1: I gave it four and a half star. Get out
- 20:45Speaker 1: of here.
- 20:45Speaker 2: This is the best Royal movie. I've ever seen.
- 20:48Speaker 1: I did not say that. It's not that I know.
- 20:51Speaker 1: But is it the best royal movie you've ever seen?
