Saharan Dust Blanketing the South | Dayton News
A massive Saharan dust plume, traveling thousands of miles from Africa, is blanketing the southern U.S., suppressing storms and fueling record-breaking heat. Unusually strong for this late in hurricane season, the dust is acting like a lid on the atmosphere, blocking thunderstorms and pushing heat indexes to 110. It’s also painting skies with fiery sunrises and sunsets as it sweeps across Texas and into Arizona — nature’s long-distance drama unfolding right above our heads.
