- 0:55Speaker 2: And the trope went a little long in that first hour,
- 0:57Speaker 2: so thanks for being with us through the break and
- 0:59Speaker 2: into the second hour of the show. Looking up on
- 1:02Speaker 2: the field, see those people up there there gathering for
- 1:04Speaker 2: the Pat McAfee show. Yes, I didn't even know that.
- 1:07Speaker 2: How long is he on there? How long is he
- 1:09Speaker 2: on today?
- 1:09Speaker 1: For?
- 1:09Speaker 3: I think shows from twelve to three I think are
- 1:14Speaker 3: the three hour show. I don't know. I think there
- 1:16Speaker 3: are three hours, or there are a two hour show
- 1:18Speaker 3: live on ESPN, and they do another hour on the streamings.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Gotcha think that's what I think. That's how it's twelve
- 1:23Speaker 3: to two ESPN. Then the extra hour, the Power Hour
- 1:27Speaker 3: they call.
- 1:28Speaker 2: It, and you and Missy Matthews who completes us, who
- 1:32Speaker 2: completes the broadcast team. Yeah, I'm now making a circle
- 1:35Speaker 2: with my hands for those of you listening on radio
- 1:37Speaker 2: can't actually see us, I'm making the complete circle sign.
- 1:41Speaker 4: Uh.
- 1:41Speaker 2: So you guys interviewed Pat this morning.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Yeah, we interviewed Pat because Missy went to high school
- 1:46Speaker 3: with Pat and all those guys up there, Oh show
- 1:49Speaker 3: Diggs as well. Diggs was that plumb sign all plum
- 1:53Speaker 3: plumb Borough guys. So so yeah, those are all her
- 1:56Speaker 3: buddies from high school.
- 1:57Speaker 2: So I was telling you during the break, uh, Wolfe
- 2:01Speaker 2: and I went to I think I think Wolf was
- 2:04Speaker 2: doing the games and he might That might have been
- 2:07Speaker 2: before he was the regular guy we started doing. We
- 2:10Speaker 2: started doing the high school broadcast for a year or
- 2:12Speaker 2: two with Kevin Gorman did a bunch of games. Mike
- 2:15Speaker 2: White from the Post Gazette would do some games for
- 2:19Speaker 2: us in the booth is the color guy, and then
- 2:21Speaker 2: we settled on, you know it. It started with us
- 2:24Speaker 2: as a celebration of communities and that sort of thing,
- 2:28Speaker 2: and then it quickly, well within a couple of years, morphed.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Into just let's do the football part of it, you know.
- 2:33Speaker 2: And so we went from showing off communities and and
- 2:36Speaker 2: the high school bands and all the other stuff to
- 2:38Speaker 2: hey man, football of its own is of its own
- 2:41Speaker 2: merit on the high school level to draw attention in
- 2:45Speaker 2: in for viewers. So let's just concentrate on trying to
- 2:48Speaker 2: get the best games. So it wasn't the best games.
- 2:51Speaker 2: So that's why I wonder if it was maybe before
- 2:53Speaker 2: Wolfe was there in our booth those first.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Couple of years. I'd forgotten he wasn't there the first
- 2:57Speaker 3: couple of years.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Anyway, So we we picked Plumb and they were playing
- 3:02Speaker 2: Franklin Regional, and I wonder if Missy was on the cheer.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Squad for that. I have to ask her that. Yeah,
- 3:07Speaker 3: I have to ask Missy if she was on the question?
- 3:10Speaker 2: Was Missy on the on the cheer squad for the
- 3:13Speaker 2: Plumb team when we came they played Franklin Regional, who
- 3:16Speaker 2: was really good. Even though Franklin Regional was a smaller classification.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Franklin Regional totally worked him. But I was going out
- 3:23Speaker 2: in the field as I always did, and talked to
- 3:24Speaker 2: the coaches before the game. I never talked to the players, obviously,
- 3:28Speaker 2: you know, forty five minutes before kickoff, I'm not going
- 3:30Speaker 2: to talk to them. To the players, by the way,
- 3:32Speaker 2: obviously then can you imagine me. You imagine me rolling
- 3:36Speaker 2: down on on Accrescher Stadium forty five minutes before a
- 3:39Speaker 2: game and strolling up to Mike Tom, Hey, Mike, how's
- 3:41Speaker 2: it going?
- 3:41Speaker 3: Everybody? Everybody healthy? What you do it out here? Is
- 3:44Speaker 3: this the actual roster? Yes? Exactly, kids, pronunciation correct.
- 3:51Speaker 2: So but the high school coaches were all great, you
- 3:53Speaker 2: go down there and talk to him before the before
- 3:55Speaker 2: the game started.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Well, Franklin Regional just crushed plumb.
- 3:59Speaker 2: But remember and you know, I was familiar with the roster,
- 4:03Speaker 2: so I knew who was who. But when I saw
- 4:05Speaker 2: Pat Mack if he kick a ball, I was like,
- 4:08Speaker 2: whoa man? I mean, you know, like I said before,
- 4:11Speaker 2: you know, you go to some of these high schools
- 4:13Speaker 2: and the punters number sixty seven, and then the halftime show.
- 4:17Speaker 2: He's taking off his helmet and he's playing the trombone,
- 4:19Speaker 2: you know, with the rest of it. He's out there
- 4:20Speaker 2: in his uniform and the marching band, the little marching
- 4:23Speaker 2: man moving around, you know, and those punts are coming
- 4:25Speaker 2: out end over end. But he's got he's the kid
- 4:28Speaker 2: with the strongest leg and he boots a twenty seven
- 4:30Speaker 2: yarder and then you're watching Pat mc if you're like,
- 4:33Speaker 2: holy mackerel. And then I called a few of his
- 4:37Speaker 2: a few of his games when he was at West Virginia.
- 4:39Speaker 3: Yeah too.
- 4:40Speaker 2: So we would always do one or two West Virginia
- 4:43Speaker 2: football games a year on sports Net Pittsburgh. Then it
- 4:45Speaker 2: was then Roots Sports. So but I've never met Pat,
- 4:49Speaker 2: so wow, yeah, call some of his games.
- 4:51Speaker 3: We never met him. Awesome guy. So what did you guys?
- 4:53Speaker 3: What did you guys chat about? We just got of
- 4:55Speaker 3: chatted about just just them coming back for another year.
- 4:58Speaker 3: This is year two that the show has been back here.
- 5:00Speaker 3: There's kind of the thoughts behind then also the pride
- 5:03Speaker 3: that you have with coming home, right, This is homecoming
- 5:05Speaker 3: for Pat McAfee, right, every time he comes here, because
- 5:08Speaker 3: he was a kid that unlike Eli Heydenreich, who always
- 5:11Speaker 3: had camp and everything. He was a kid that came
- 5:13Speaker 3: and watched games on the hill here and watched those legends.
- 5:16Speaker 3: He talked about his first picture. He thinks he was
- 5:19Speaker 3: trying to get autographs. He got a picture with Kevin
- 5:21Speaker 3: Green KG. Wow, you know, and so he has like
- 5:24Speaker 3: these fond memories. So kind of talking about that, then
- 5:26Speaker 3: we kind of talked about you know, so one of
- 5:29Speaker 3: the former guys you employed is now the head coach here.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Mike McCarthy was on your staff. You hired him a
- 5:34Speaker 3: year ago, was working on your show. So it's like,
- 5:39Speaker 3: so you come here and and even when we went
- 5:41Speaker 3: up there to go talk to Pat ahead of time
- 5:43Speaker 3: to figure out the timing, you know, Mike McCarty and
- 5:45Speaker 3: him are sitting in there. They're going through the script
- 5:47Speaker 3: and everything, and they're just busting each other's chops in there,
- 5:50Speaker 3: and it's all this just yinser accent in this room, right, oh,
- 5:56Speaker 3: which I'm sure unlike anywhere else in America, like to
- 5:59Speaker 3: have those to up here in La Trove and sounding
- 6:03Speaker 3: like locals who just happened to have like broken to
- 6:05Speaker 3: an office somewhere. Yeah. Uh, And these are professionals at
- 6:09Speaker 3: the tops of their game. One's the head coach of
- 6:10Speaker 3: the Pittsburgh Steels, the other one has one of the
- 6:13Speaker 3: top shows on all of sports. And they're both Burger boys,
- 6:17Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying. They're both from the burg area,
- 6:20Speaker 3: and so it's just it was really cool to kind
- 6:22Speaker 3: of see that. So we kind of talked about that,
- 6:23Speaker 3: highlighted that the passion of the town. And then this
- 6:27Speaker 3: is kind of what his expectations where he's looking forward
- 6:29Speaker 3: to with practice, coming back here another year, and you
- 6:33Speaker 3: know how it feels about the quote unquote pilgrimage. Yeah,
- 6:36Speaker 3: what did he say? All Right, just I don't want
- 6:38Speaker 3: to give it all away because we don't want to
- 6:39Speaker 3: get away. It's going to be on all the Steelers
- 6:41Speaker 3: socials and we posted a little bit later today, but
- 6:44Speaker 3: it was just it was pride and and you know,
- 6:47Speaker 3: and only how Pat can do it. So, you know
- 6:50Speaker 3: how normally when you set up for a remote shoot,
- 6:53Speaker 3: you have your microphone and you plug it into your shirt,
- 6:55Speaker 3: you put it on a lapel pin or something. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 6:58Speaker 3: what is pack up? No, I'm gonna hold it, he
- 7:01Speaker 3: goes tiny microphone series.
- 7:03Speaker 5: Really he's holding the He's why because that's Pat, right,
- 7:08Speaker 5: this is the most Pat McAfee thing to do, right,
- 7:10Speaker 5: because he has a black T shirt and it looks
- 7:12Speaker 5: weird with the black microphone up there and having to
- 7:14Speaker 5: run it up his shirt.
- 7:15Speaker 3: So I'm just gonna hold it and there just kind
- 7:17Speaker 3: of just kind of tuck the uh, the the mic
- 7:20Speaker 3: pack on the side and he's just holding it, talking
- 7:22Speaker 3: as though it's like a stick mic.
- 7:23Speaker 2: It is hilarious. That is hilarious. So that's uh. I
- 7:26Speaker 2: wouldn't have expected anybody to do that.
- 7:29Speaker 3: Yeah, but especially with Pat mckett. Right, Yeah, that's exactly right.
- 7:34Speaker 3: That's a good goal. So yeah. So but but it
- 7:36Speaker 3: was a great and we had about five to seven
- 7:37Speaker 3: minutes with him and just amazing guy. I mean, I
- 7:41Speaker 3: love Pat. I've known Pat, I mean played against him,
- 7:44Speaker 3: and just just an awesome guy. So good to have
- 7:47Speaker 3: him up here. And like you said, him and the
- 7:49Speaker 3: rest of the crew, they're all up on set there
- 7:52Speaker 3: behind that tree that you so expertly pointed out that
- 7:54Speaker 3: I did not know until you said it. They're there
- 7:58Speaker 3: on the baseball field this year, whereas they were in
- 8:00Speaker 3: the crowd over here over the remember that year ago.
- 8:03Speaker 3: But because of the way it was situated, because it
- 8:05Speaker 3: set so large the you know, there was a fear
- 8:08Speaker 3: for fans and safety because it's like the sheer drop
- 8:11Speaker 3: off down the hill, and then you got the fencing
- 8:13Speaker 3: there and so people were kind of like, you know,
- 8:17Speaker 3: corraling a little bit too much, whereas here on the
- 8:19Speaker 3: field you have a lot more space you can kind
- 8:21Speaker 3: of fence off what you want. And also a year
- 8:24Speaker 3: ago they couldn't get the same amount of power to
- 8:25Speaker 3: the field because the show takes the set takes a
- 8:28Speaker 3: lot of a lot of electricity interesting to run it,
- 8:31Speaker 3: so they couldn't get it. But now they have it.
- 8:32Speaker 3: This year, they actually got a cart over there on
- 8:34Speaker 3: the far side where they have the big generator portables
- 8:39Speaker 3: and it looks I mean, it looks like a game
- 8:41Speaker 3: day setup, like underneath the stadium where you have like
- 8:43Speaker 3: all the trucks lined up and you have all these
- 8:47Speaker 3: kind of trailer r V style semi truck rigs. They
- 8:50Speaker 3: got one over there to run the power. So better
- 8:52Speaker 3: set up this year.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Yeah, they knew, they knew, they knew a guy, yeah,
- 8:56Speaker 2: namely the head coach.
- 8:59Speaker 3: That would help.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Yeah, it is a much better location. Although they can't see.
- 9:02Speaker 3: The practice as yeah, because you're kind of looking at
- 9:05Speaker 3: field three, right, But they were able to also put
- 9:08Speaker 3: their cameras down on the field. I was amazed at
- 9:10Speaker 3: how big the set was, the traveling set that sets
- 9:13Speaker 3: as humongous. Yeah, that sets humongous. I went on it
- 9:16Speaker 3: last year and I was like, man, I mean they
- 9:19Speaker 3: literally have you know, about the size of a very
- 9:24Speaker 3: nice studio apartment, I would say, on that set. And
- 9:29Speaker 3: you know, because I think they have what six guys
- 9:32Speaker 3: that rotate that are on that are on the show
- 9:36Speaker 3: together that they kind of go back and forth with
- 9:38Speaker 3: I think three or four inside the main studio part
- 9:41Speaker 3: and then usually the guys who are in the booth
- 9:44Speaker 3: or production room they have their own camera, but on
- 9:46Speaker 3: a remote sets, they're actually on the set too with them.
- 9:48Speaker 2: You know. And let me also say one thing that
- 9:51Speaker 2: and again I've never met Pat, even though I've called
- 9:54Speaker 2: some of his games, but I was really blown away
- 9:59Speaker 2: by the story. Got the massive contract and he gave
- 10:02Speaker 2: his core staff members backpacks, and into backpacks were two
- 10:08Speaker 2: hundred and fifty thousand dollars cash. That is taking care
- 10:14Speaker 2: of your people, Hey, keep the main thing, the main thing.
- 10:17Speaker 3: I mean and he knows that he didn't get there
- 10:19Speaker 3: by himself. He comes from team sport backgrounds, so he
- 10:22Speaker 3: understands what a team is and everybody. There's no greater
- 10:26Speaker 3: person than the team. There's always a leader, but there's
- 10:28Speaker 3: no greater person in a team when you have to
- 10:31Speaker 3: depend on everybody. Everybody's depend upon each other's success. So yeah, hey, hey,
- 10:35Speaker 3: help the boys out. Listen, I get a raised, We
- 10:38Speaker 3: all get a raised. I was thinking of buying your sandwich, MA,
- 10:41Speaker 3: I mean, listen, but you know you could give me
- 10:43Speaker 3: one of those sticken wings you have sitting over here,
- 10:46Speaker 3: all your sharing his caringreak during.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Your break, it's all yours, which we're running up to
- 10:52Speaker 2: closely a break as we're continuing to look at this
- 10:56Speaker 2: Pittsburgh Seithers team and a few more questions about about
- 11:01Speaker 2: where the team sits now x amount of days in
- 11:05Speaker 2: when you start turning the corner from individual drills to
- 11:08Speaker 2: game preparation. The first game coming up is against the
- 11:12Speaker 2: Green Bay Packers, and of course for Aaron Rodgers, I
- 11:16Speaker 2: doubty steps on the field. Didn't step on the field
- 11:18Speaker 2: in preseason camp last year. Not going to be an
- 11:22Speaker 2: important day probably for TJ. Watter or Cameron.
- 11:27Speaker 3: Right now. He's now assended as well.
- 11:29Speaker 2: It is going to be a hugely important day for
- 11:33Speaker 2: a lot of guys, So we're gonna talk a little
- 11:35Speaker 2: bit about that and where the team sits in camp
- 11:37Speaker 2: as we continue on in the locker room from Saint
- 11:39Speaker 2: Vincent College here on the Steelers Audio Network.
- 11:43Speaker 1: This is live coverage up twenty twenty six Steelers Training
- 11:47Speaker 1: Camp or the Steelers Audio Network, presented by bud Light,

- 11:56Speaker 1: in part by your neighborhood, Ford Store, queenor Pittsburgh Community

- 12:26Speaker 2: Yeah, and welcome back in the locker room here at
- 12:34Speaker 2: Saint Vincent College in Latrobe. And we're talking about so
- 12:38Speaker 2: when do you I'm sure you're driving in here? Are
- 12:42Speaker 2: you excited when you're driving in here? Are you a
- 12:44Speaker 2: little bit like, oh man, the family's leaving and are
- 12:47Speaker 2: you Are you excited? Kind of from the jump when
- 12:50Speaker 2: you get into camp. I ease into the excitement level.
- 12:53Speaker 3: I kind of ease in because I think for me,
- 12:56Speaker 3: it's more than just the drive, right, I got a
- 12:59Speaker 3: fly crail across country, So it's not like like yesterday
- 13:02Speaker 3: was an off day, right, and you get to you know,
- 13:05Speaker 3: you got to spend time at home right with your wife, yes,
- 13:09Speaker 3: you know, and kind of clean up around the house.
- 13:11Speaker 3: You know, luckily I drove five and a half. Oh yeah, no,
- 13:15Speaker 3: no date. But I'm just saying, like it it's something
- 13:18Speaker 3: that you have to ease into it, even when you're
- 13:21Speaker 3: an older guy, because you got kids, you got other responsibilities.
- 13:27Speaker 2: I wonder about your wife.
- 13:28Speaker 3: You know, your wife is still going to call you
- 13:31Speaker 3: about stuff, and you kind of have to be like, hun,
- 13:34Speaker 3: I can't worry about, you know, a leaky faucet, like
- 13:38Speaker 3: you got to call the repair guy, Like I can't
- 13:39Speaker 3: call him. I'm at camp and I got meetings type
- 13:42Speaker 3: of deal. But life still goes on around you even
- 13:45Speaker 3: though while you're up here, and your family does a
- 13:47Speaker 3: really good job of kind of mitigating that because they
- 13:49Speaker 3: know what the priority is. But there is a little bit,
- 13:52Speaker 3: especially when you're older and you have kids, because you
- 13:54Speaker 3: want to spend that time with your little ones. And
- 13:57Speaker 3: you see the guys after practice that are in the
- 13:59Speaker 3: far ends and they and they and they're holding their kids,
- 14:02Speaker 3: they're bringing them on the I mean, heck, we saw
- 14:03Speaker 3: the Brisker family reunion. Yes, you know last time we
- 14:06Speaker 3: were out here there. Yeah, exactly, ye A bit more,
- 14:09Speaker 3: yeah exactly, but but yeah, because you know, we are
- 14:13Speaker 3: we are pack animals, right, And when you have your
- 14:16Speaker 3: pack and you have your group, it's tough to leave
- 14:19Speaker 3: that group. And even though you have another group that
- 14:20Speaker 3: you're going to join up here, your teammates, it's still
- 14:24Speaker 3: a little different and you still kind of have to
- 14:27Speaker 3: ease yourself into it because you're separating from what you've
- 14:30Speaker 3: known for the last three months to now going into
- 14:33Speaker 3: your season mode or you know, in this preparation mode
- 14:38Speaker 3: for what the season is going to entail.
- 14:39Speaker 2: And everybody, I'm sure is different. You know, some people
- 14:43Speaker 2: some if you're a youngster, you're probably you just can't
- 14:46Speaker 2: wait to get there. You can't wait for that first
- 14:48Speaker 2: twenty three year old Max was on pins and needles
- 14:51Speaker 2: and couldn't wait to be here.
- 14:52Speaker 3: I was here. I was staying in Greensburg at my
- 14:54Speaker 3: aunt's house three days before I had to report to camp. Yeah,
- 14:57Speaker 3: because I couldn't wait to get here, right, you're pawing
- 14:59Speaker 3: at the ground. Yeah, but year eight, Max, you know,
- 15:03Speaker 3: when my youngest child is born and I got a
- 15:07Speaker 3: little baby at home, You're like, man, I'd love to
- 15:09Speaker 3: be home. But then, of course you also don't want
- 15:10Speaker 3: to wake up in the middle of the night and
- 15:12Speaker 3: have to change a diaper.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Yeah, like one in the morning with one eye open.
- 15:15Speaker 2: And you know, babies are a little bit babies change things, right,
- 15:20Speaker 2: and and and a lot of the players have young kids.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Your Christian Koons has got a it's a one year
- 15:24Speaker 2: old or a very young one. So you know there
- 15:27Speaker 2: are other players have these have the young kid. If
- 15:29Speaker 2: you see like you said, you see the players and
- 15:31Speaker 2: you're walking on the field and they got their kids
- 15:33Speaker 2: or their wives bring the kids out on the on
- 15:35Speaker 2: the field to them, you know, I would say like
- 15:38Speaker 2: for me personally, I can just say, like when I'm
- 15:40Speaker 2: with my wife hanging out in the morning, when I
- 15:41Speaker 2: have in coffee, I'm like, this is the greatest. And
- 15:43Speaker 2: then I'll hop in the car and I'll go play golf.
- 15:44Speaker 2: And I'm playing golf and I'm like, this is the greatest,
- 15:46Speaker 2: you know, yeah, and then I'll go into work that
- 15:47Speaker 2: and night I'm like, this is the greatest. But it
- 15:49Speaker 2: takes a little you know, you don't want to leave
- 15:51Speaker 2: your wife to go play golf. You don't want to
- 15:52Speaker 2: leave your the golf course to go to go to work.
- 15:54Speaker 2: But they're all good things, right, They're all good. They're
- 15:57Speaker 2: all great things. You leave your family, that's a great thing.
- 15:59Speaker 2: You come out here, you hang out with your teammates,
- 16:02Speaker 2: that's a great thing too.
- 16:03Speaker 3: Yeah, and you're gonna miss something, right, you can't have
- 16:07Speaker 3: it all. And so you know, like I said, there's
- 16:10Speaker 3: a little slow play process, a slow build, a slow
- 16:14Speaker 3: rise into it. But once you're in it, you're like, man,
- 16:16Speaker 3: this is awesome. Yeah. Yeah, it's like it's like it's
- 16:18Speaker 3: almost like, you know, you have to be you have
- 16:21Speaker 3: to be in the moment to appreciate it versus the anticipation.
- 16:25Speaker 3: Whereas young and you have less responsibilities or less commitments,
- 16:29Speaker 3: it's you can anticipate a lot more about what you're
- 16:32Speaker 3: looking forward.
- 16:33Speaker 2: To, you know, and I think the human condition can't
- 16:37Speaker 2: be ignored in all this. So for years I wondered,
- 16:41Speaker 2: So you go on vacation, and I would go on,
- 16:44Speaker 2: Let's say I went on a ten day vacation in
- 16:46Speaker 2: the summer, right the first that for me for the
- 16:51Speaker 2: last twenty six years of my life has been pirate season, right, yeah,
- 16:55Speaker 2: And it's also vacation season. That's when you go on vacation.
- 16:58Speaker 2: So you go on vacation, and the first few days
- 17:01Speaker 2: you're like, what's going on in the prit You still
- 17:02Speaker 2: want to know, it's hard to unplug.
- 17:04Speaker 3: And then it's really a seven day vacation, right it is.
- 17:07Speaker 3: And then at the end of.
- 17:09Speaker 2: That vacation you start thinking about getting back. I got
- 17:12Speaker 2: to mow the lawn, and I got And I always wondered,
- 17:15Speaker 2: does that mean ten days is the natural course of things?
- 17:19Speaker 2: And how long I should be taking on vacation or
- 17:23Speaker 2: if I had a month long vacation, would those last
- 17:26Speaker 2: few days be consumed with those same thoughts. I gotta
- 17:28Speaker 2: get back, I got to mow the lawn, I gotta
- 17:30Speaker 2: you know, I gotta b reinstitute my mail delivery, whatever
- 17:33Speaker 2: you have to do. So I think it's more the
- 17:36Speaker 2: latter than the former, which makes me wonder is camp
- 17:41Speaker 2: timed perfectly so that by the end of I think
- 17:43Speaker 2: everybody agrees, by the end of camp, you cannot wait
- 17:47Speaker 2: to get out of camp? Right, yes, Now, would you
- 17:50Speaker 2: still feel that way if camp was a week longer
- 17:52Speaker 2: or a week shorter, I think you probably would. You're
- 17:54Speaker 2: just conditioned to know it's time to go. Or is
- 17:58Speaker 2: it a more natural thing like spring and summer and
- 18:01Speaker 2: the camp should be three weeks.
- 18:02Speaker 3: And that's it. I think this is the perfect amount
- 18:07Speaker 3: of camp, Okay, right, I think that's what it is,
- 18:11Speaker 3: because it's just enough to where you're not thinking about
- 18:14Speaker 3: the family. And then when you start to think about
- 18:16Speaker 3: the family, they have family Day, right, yeah, here at camp,
- 18:19Speaker 3: right yep? And then yeah, and then you do have
- 18:22Speaker 3: the opportunities where after practice you get about a twenty
- 18:24Speaker 3: minute window to see them as long as they're here locally, right.
- 18:28Speaker 3: I Mean that's the other thing because a lot of guys,
- 18:30Speaker 3: you know, they might live elsewhere, the guys who are
- 18:33Speaker 3: free agents, right, you know, outside of Jakuan Brisker who's
- 18:35Speaker 3: from here.
- 18:36Speaker 4: Right.
- 18:37Speaker 3: But if you are a Ray Shawn Jenkins and you
- 18:41Speaker 3: have kids, right, and you just got signed by saying
- 18:43Speaker 3: your family doesn't live here, like they're gonna come here
- 18:46Speaker 3: at some point because you think you're gonna make it.
- 18:49Speaker 3: And there is that day on the schedule where you
- 18:51Speaker 3: want to have them there, but they don't live here.
- 18:53Speaker 3: They can't come to practice every day, right, So there's
- 18:56Speaker 3: a little bit like you're gonna be missing them, right
- 18:58Speaker 3: and you're gonna wonder what are they doing and when
- 19:01Speaker 3: are they gonna come? And I think that's what I
- 19:05Speaker 3: would say that it's it's just enough of camp that
- 19:09Speaker 3: you don't feel too much to where you forget about it,
- 19:13Speaker 3: but you also know there's a necessity to it. You
- 19:15Speaker 3: have to be able to get away. You have to
- 19:17Speaker 3: be vulnerable to your teammates and open to them to
- 19:20Speaker 3: create bonds. So there's a certain process that that has
- 19:24Speaker 3: to be. I have to be away at sleep away
- 19:25Speaker 3: camp so many days, so I'm not missing my parents
- 19:28Speaker 3: right right. Yes, as a young person and as and
- 19:31Speaker 3: as a football player, I have to be able to
- 19:34Speaker 3: detach from my other titles, which is dad, husband, son, brother,
- 19:41Speaker 3: whatever that is, and become football player, become the number
- 19:46Speaker 3: that's on the jersey I represent, right, and then focus
- 19:49Speaker 3: on the name played afterwards, and that's where this process,
- 19:53Speaker 3: that's why you see no names on the back of
- 19:54Speaker 3: these jerseys, right because you're a number right now and
- 19:57Speaker 3: you're getting to that plaqua. You're getting to putting a
- 20:00Speaker 3: single Steeler's logo on the side of your helmet because
- 20:02Speaker 3: at the preseason you don't get it all the time, right.
- 20:05Speaker 3: You have to earn those things, and so this is
- 20:07Speaker 3: a certain process where you have to detach yourself in
- 20:09Speaker 3: order to get into that process. And so this camp,
- 20:14Speaker 3: you know, is twenty one practices up here, twenty one days.
- 20:19Speaker 3: Twenty one days of practice. I think it's like twenty
- 20:21Speaker 3: five days when it's all said and done, because there's
- 20:22Speaker 3: that every seventh off day, whatever the type of deal.
- 20:25Speaker 3: So it ends up becoming like twenty five days. But
- 20:28Speaker 3: those twenty one practices done up here is a way
- 20:31Speaker 3: to separate, and a lot of teams don't do that.
- 20:33Speaker 3: The other think. A lot of teams go to the
- 20:35Speaker 3: training facility and then they go back home and then
- 20:36Speaker 3: they come back to practice the next day, so it
- 20:39Speaker 3: feels like in season in the preseason, but you lose
- 20:42Speaker 3: opportunities to grow as a team because there's not the
- 20:45Speaker 3: forced dorm rooms where you're sharing a bathroom with another
- 20:48Speaker 3: person or three other people, depending on if you're in
- 20:50Speaker 3: a two by two situation or a one by one
- 20:53Speaker 3: or two by one. So you know, that forces friendships,
- 20:58Speaker 3: that forces a chemistry and a bond good, better and different.
- 21:03Speaker 3: It forces that. It accelerates that process that would normally
- 21:07Speaker 3: take months. You're getting in a matter of weeks because
- 21:10Speaker 3: you're around each other twenty four to seven. You're bored
- 21:13Speaker 3: in your dorm rooms. Okay, well, I know such and
- 21:15Speaker 3: such as an Xbox. I feel like play an Xbox. Right,
- 21:18Speaker 3: we go in there and just you start gathering a man, Hey,
- 21:21Speaker 3: these guys play cars, these guys play Uno. These guys
- 21:24Speaker 3: play board games. Right, they have the board game sitting
- 21:27Speaker 3: under the ten outside of there for guys to commune
- 21:29Speaker 3: with each other, play some connect for play, some chess,
- 21:32Speaker 3: play some monopoly because there's nothing else to do up here, right, right,
- 21:37Speaker 3: and so, which is why you're here, Which is why
- 21:41Speaker 3: you're here, Like, I need to get to know these guys. Listen,
- 21:43Speaker 3: if I'm if I'm a bleed and sweat, cry and
- 21:45Speaker 3: laugh on the field of battle with you, man, I
- 21:49Speaker 3: better know something about you. I better at least know
- 21:51Speaker 3: your mom's first name or your dad's first name and
- 21:54Speaker 3: how many kids you got, right, right, No, I don't
- 21:56Speaker 3: need to know your favorite color or you know or
- 21:58Speaker 3: you know what's your what's your what's your what your
- 22:00Speaker 3: zodiac sign is. But I need to know some other
- 22:03Speaker 3: pertinent stuff so it becomes personal and I'm not just
- 22:06Speaker 3: calling you by your first name. Like when I first
- 22:08Speaker 3: walked in the locker room my rookie year after I
- 22:12Speaker 3: got drafted for mini camps, I'm trying to find my
- 22:15Speaker 3: locker and I literally ran into Jerome Bettis. I said, oh, sorry,
- 22:19Speaker 3: mister Bettis. He's like, it's like, mister Bettis is my father,
- 22:22Speaker 3: call me jb call me Bussy whatever, just don't call
- 22:25Speaker 3: me mister, right, and you figure that out. And then
- 22:28Speaker 3: by the end of training camp, Bussy, what's up? Man?
- 22:31Speaker 2: Hey?
- 22:31Speaker 3: When we going bowling, We've gone bowling together and done
- 22:34Speaker 3: all these other type of events. And I think that's
- 22:37Speaker 3: what matters in this process. You have to get personable
- 22:40Speaker 3: with these guys, yes, and you have to create the
- 22:42Speaker 3: relationships because for the next four months, it's every day.
- 22:49Speaker 3: I mean, my wife would my wife would often joke
- 22:52Speaker 3: like man, I was like, you spend more time with
- 22:54Speaker 3: the guys that you do with me, and I'm your wife.
- 22:56Speaker 3: What kind of has to be for this profession? You know,
- 22:59Speaker 3: we're gonna been eight plus hours at the facility together
- 23:02Speaker 3: and you know, I'm only coming home for dinner and
- 23:04Speaker 3: then we're sleeping next to each other. But that's about it. Yes,
- 23:07Speaker 3: you know, for the next couple of months, and yes
- 23:09Speaker 3: I'll get a day a Tuesday off here, or you know,
- 23:12Speaker 3: a bye week here. But for the most part, yeah,
- 23:14Speaker 3: I've got to be closer to these guys then you.
- 23:17Speaker 3: And then in the spring and in the early summer,
- 23:19Speaker 3: that's when we get to reconnect and that's where we
- 23:21Speaker 3: get to really be a couple. Right But for the
- 23:23Speaker 3: rest of it, my new family, my extended family, is
- 23:26Speaker 3: the priority right now in this.
- 23:28Speaker 2: In this profession, Well, people don't realize the hours that
- 23:31Speaker 2: players put in and how long those days are. So
- 23:35Speaker 2: I just know that in the in the occasions that
- 23:38Speaker 2: I've you know, moved to a new city and started
- 23:40Speaker 2: a new job, and you know, and probably the first
- 23:43Speaker 2: three months you might as well live by yourself because
- 23:47Speaker 2: you're spending all your time at work and you're figuring
- 23:49Speaker 2: out you know, what is human resources want out here?
- 23:52Speaker 2: You got to navigate your job, but it's so much
- 23:54Speaker 2: more than that, and there's so much stuff going around it,
- 23:57Speaker 2: and you're putting in longer hours to speed up the
- 23:59Speaker 2: act of process. But for football players, that's the entire
- 24:03Speaker 2: season never slows down.
- 24:04Speaker 3: Twelve hours a day, every day, it feels like. And
- 24:07Speaker 3: then on your off days you're still getting together, you're
- 24:09Speaker 3: still doing rehab, you're still getting your lifts in, you're
- 24:12Speaker 3: watching film or you're getting your film. Now now it's
- 24:15Speaker 3: a lot easier to get those things. You don't physically
- 24:17Speaker 3: have to be at the facility as much. I'd say
- 24:19Speaker 3: you could cut off maybe four hours out of that
- 24:21Speaker 3: work week because now everything gets pushed to your iPad
- 24:24Speaker 3: or your device. Right. But back when I first came,
- 24:27Speaker 3: it was VHS tapes and you had to go into
- 24:30Speaker 3: the video department and ask them specifically. Then they had
- 24:33Speaker 3: to dub it for you and then give it to you.
- 24:36Speaker 3: You know. So that's just a process in and of itself,
- 24:39Speaker 3: and so by the end of it, you're like, man,
- 24:41Speaker 3: I might as well just stay here and watch this
- 24:43Speaker 3: extra film. So you're getting the facility around six am
- 24:46Speaker 3: in the morning, you know, six thirty in the morning,
- 24:48Speaker 3: and you're not leaving till five thirty six, sometimes seven o'clock,
- 24:52Speaker 3: I mean, heck at one point and going to eat.
- 24:54Speaker 3: Then then you got to go to bed and go
- 24:56Speaker 3: to bed and then sometimes I mean we were so
- 24:58Speaker 3: close as a team. We we played cards and we
- 25:02Speaker 3: would designate a wife or a significant other to bring
- 25:04Speaker 3: food dinner to the facility because we were playing cards
- 25:07Speaker 3: in the in the in the lounge.
- 25:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's that closeness. And you know, people
- 25:13Speaker 2: forget when when you know, say and Aaron Rodgers, I
- 25:18Speaker 2: think was gathering people over this house on Thursday night
- 25:21Speaker 2: or whatever last year. Yeah, and that's a great, wonderful
- 25:24Speaker 2: team bonding thing. But that comes with the sacrifice of Okay, honey,
- 25:30Speaker 2: I'm off on Thursday night. Wait what you know, Yeah,
- 25:34Speaker 2: another night, another night, you're not gonna be home.
- 25:36Speaker 3: Well, And Thursday night was was our was our massage
- 25:39Speaker 3: night where we had the massuses come in. And so
- 25:44Speaker 3: Thursday night, my wife knew I was going to James
- 25:46Speaker 3: Ferrier's house because we had a massouse coming in from
- 25:49Speaker 3: New York that did that did acupunctures from New York, Yeah,
- 25:54Speaker 3: because because she was a different world. Yeah, she was
- 25:56Speaker 3: with him at the jets and he was like, no,
- 25:58Speaker 3: I gotta have and then it was like, hey, well
- 26:00Speaker 3: you know I'm going to do this. Do you guys
- 26:02Speaker 3: want to come? So they would come too, and all
- 26:05Speaker 3: of a sudden we got twenty guys sitting at Potzy's house.
- 26:08Speaker 3: And that was just the Thursday night. You sat, you
- 26:10Speaker 3: wait your turn to go see the massuse. And then
- 26:13Speaker 3: after that I would then drive to Charlie Batch's house.
- 26:16Speaker 3: So I drive from a waterfront where Potsy lived, all
- 26:19Speaker 3: the way up to Wexford where Charlie lived, and then
- 26:21Speaker 3: he had his mesuse from the Detroit Lions, who was
- 26:23Speaker 3: more Thai physical manipulation stretching with the massage. So I
- 26:28Speaker 3: would go get both sessions done on Thursday.
- 26:31Speaker 2: And macaroni cheese, well I mean mac and cheese, listen.
- 26:38Speaker 3: And her colla greens are just as delicious. So yeah,
- 26:41Speaker 3: so you know, so Tash would be there and she'd
- 26:43Speaker 3: have food there because you have about ten guys that
- 26:45Speaker 3: would go up there to see Sandy, and then you
- 26:48Speaker 3: know we'd see Lisa over over at Potse's house. And
- 26:51Speaker 3: that was my rotation for nine years, and it was
- 26:53Speaker 3: crazy because one year, so actually I take the back
- 26:57Speaker 3: Lisa was eight years and Sandy was nine years because
- 26:59Speaker 3: one year Lisa got pulled from us for you know,
- 27:04Speaker 3: we obviously weren't as cool as Mariah Carey. She went
- 27:06Speaker 3: on tour with Maria Carrey, so Mariah Carey took her
- 27:08Speaker 3: from us. But that was that was one year. That
- 27:10Speaker 3: was one year, and then she came back around and
- 27:12Speaker 3: realized that this was this was the more fun and
- 27:15Speaker 3: it was more lucrative. But I mean, you get to
- 27:17Speaker 3: go into it. Maria Carrey, you're gonna go ma, You're
- 27:19Speaker 3: not gonna sit around a bunch of lugheads like us,
- 27:22Speaker 3: you know, every Thursday night. But but yeah, but that
- 27:26Speaker 3: was like the routine. And so and then that Thursday
- 27:29Speaker 3: before I got to those, it was O line film
- 27:31Speaker 3: watching night, So we designated teammates house. We'd rather be
- 27:35Speaker 3: at Chris's house, Hartwig's house, and I would rent the
- 27:39Speaker 3: projector and we would go through all the situations. We
- 27:42Speaker 3: have running backs come over, we have tight ends come over,
- 27:45Speaker 3: and then all of a sudden it became everybody else
- 27:48Speaker 3: because our offensive line was was a pretty fun.
- 27:50Speaker 2: Crew that's fun, guys.
- 27:52Speaker 3: Yeah, But I mean it was literally like Thursday nights
- 27:54Speaker 3: was just that night that my wife knew she's not
- 27:57Speaker 3: gonna see me. She was like, okay, you're like, you'll
- 27:59Speaker 3: be bet at sometime like one in the morning. But
- 28:02Speaker 3: then you're getting up at sixty get to the facility
- 28:05Speaker 3: for fast Fridays Friday. That's being young. Yeah, but we
- 28:08Speaker 3: also got out early. We got out by one o'clock
- 28:10Speaker 3: on Friday, Okay, and the Hayes in the barn of
- 28:12Speaker 3: that point, I'm not staying after watching film on Friday
- 28:14Speaker 3: like I did that Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday watching all
- 28:18Speaker 3: the film.
- 28:18Speaker 2: I practice on Friday, the walk through on Saturday.
- 28:21Speaker 3: Yeah, and I could get on the plane or head
- 28:23Speaker 3: to the hotel that night, whichever one it was. So,
- 28:25Speaker 3: you know, my wife just knew Thursday, I'm not going
- 28:27Speaker 3: to see him. Monday night, I'm not going to see
- 28:30Speaker 3: him Tuesday. He's home during the day somewhat, but my
- 28:33Speaker 3: wife worked, so it was like, okay, well he's gonna
- 28:35Speaker 3: be in charge of figuring out what we're gonna have
- 28:37Speaker 3: for dinner. So that was my one day a week
- 28:39Speaker 3: We're to figure it out and then you just rinse
- 28:41Speaker 3: and repeat until the season's over.
- 28:42Speaker 2: So today was the first day that the players were
- 28:45Speaker 2: putting pads on and they were collisions right, Yes, So
- 28:49Speaker 2: I was fascinated to watch rookie right tackle Maxahona Chore
- 28:53Speaker 2: going against Jack Sawyer and going against t J.
- 28:56Speaker 3: Watt.
- 28:57Speaker 2: So forgetting Jack Sawyer for a moment, you're Maxahonachard at
- 29:01Speaker 2: the beginning of your career.
- 29:02Speaker 3: You're TJ.
- 29:03Speaker 2: Watt at a different point in your career.
- 29:05Speaker 3: In years end.
- 29:06Speaker 2: What are these guys after in training camp?
- 29:09Speaker 3: Because I don't think.
- 29:10Speaker 2: They're quite after the same thing. Luckily, I have somebody
- 29:13Speaker 2: sitting to my right who's been on both ends of
- 29:15Speaker 2: that spectrum, and he's going to answer that question for
- 29:17Speaker 2: you when we continue in the locker room.
- 29:20Speaker 3: Here on the Steelers Audio Network.

- 30:17Speaker 2: this room, this h up in the press box felt
- 30:20Speaker 2: a little like the locker room. We had ed troop
- 30:22Speaker 2: rolled in here. Yeah, West U of the rolled in
- 30:24Speaker 2: here with gifts chocolate chip cookies from the De Santas
- 30:26Speaker 2: family in Ohio. Right delicious, by the way, Missy Matthews,
- 30:33Speaker 2: who again, I'm gonna make the circle motion here. She
- 30:36Speaker 2: completes us.
- 30:37Speaker 3: She cleeks our broadcast team. She completes the circle of trust. Hi, Missy, No,
- 30:43Speaker 3: she's saying Hi. She gonna come in and join us,
- 30:45Speaker 3: so real quick before Missy comes in here.
- 30:47Speaker 2: You're a young player, right, uh, you're after one thing
- 30:51Speaker 2: in camp, right, I mean, and a veteran guys got
- 30:53Speaker 2: to be after something different. So what are guys are
- 30:57Speaker 2: the veteran guys just trying to get in shape and
- 30:58Speaker 2: hone themselves and look at after their skills. Are they
- 31:00Speaker 2: trying to test the younger guys? Are they the younger guys?
- 31:03Speaker 2: Are everything's to test?
- 31:05Speaker 3: Right? Yeah? Everything is a test for the end. They
- 31:07Speaker 3: are constantly consuming new information. And you know you talk
- 31:12Speaker 3: about a young guy has to create his encyclopedia or
- 31:16Speaker 3: his book of players. So for just for illustration purposes,
- 31:23Speaker 3: Maxionatre versus t J. Watt? Right, what is I'm sorry? Right? Yeah?
- 31:28Speaker 3: What is TJ. Watt learning? And what is Maxionatre learning?
- 31:32Speaker 3: Maxianature is taking an information like this is what an
- 31:37Speaker 3: all pro pass rusher looks like? How does he line up?
- 31:42Speaker 3: What is like his what is his tendency? I'm taking
- 31:46Speaker 3: a snapshot of his stance, his hands. Okay, what does
- 31:50Speaker 3: he do? Is he a second step or third step guy?
- 31:53Speaker 3: Before he initiates a move? What's the move that he's
- 31:56Speaker 3: going for? How do I counter it? What am I
- 31:59Speaker 3: going to do to dictate to force him to do
- 32:02Speaker 3: something that I want him to do versus what he
- 32:04Speaker 3: wants to do. All that's going through his head. Fast forward.
- 32:09Speaker 3: I've now been in the league nine years. I'm going
- 32:11Speaker 3: into year ten. A'lla TJ. Watt. I've gone against hundreds
- 32:15Speaker 3: of tackles. At this point, I'm going which guy does
- 32:20Speaker 3: he remind me of that I already have in my rolodex, right,
- 32:24Speaker 3: because I have a deeper experience level, so I can
- 32:29Speaker 3: now put guys into styles. So now what style of
- 32:33Speaker 3: guy is he? And that's what I'm trying to figure out.
- 32:35Speaker 3: If I'm TJ. Watt, whereas Maxianachure, I'm gathering brand new knowledge.
- 32:38Speaker 3: I don't have a rolodex of guys. I haven't gone
- 32:42Speaker 3: against Miles Garrett, I haven't gone against you know, a
- 32:47Speaker 3: Cavon Thibodeaux. I haven't gone against a Brian Burns or
- 32:50Speaker 3: any of these other top pass rushers around the league.
- 32:54Speaker 3: I'm getting my first shot at a top fight pass
- 32:56Speaker 3: rusher on my team. The first day of pads sos
- 33:00Speaker 3: a lot different. It's empty. He has a lot of
- 33:03Speaker 3: chapters to write versus a volume to pull from, so
- 33:08Speaker 3: it's a They're both very different, but it's all knowledge gathering.
- 33:12Speaker 3: It's just how you collate and how you gather it.
- 33:15Speaker 3: One's looking at styles and saying I have something for
- 33:18Speaker 3: that style, and the other one's saying, I don't know
- 33:20Speaker 3: what it is, but I got to write it.
- 33:21Speaker 2: All down, so completely switching gears now because that's something
- 33:25Speaker 2: I want to talk more about at length. You know,
- 33:28Speaker 2: when they have Hall of Fame plaques, like the Hall
- 33:30Speaker 2: of Fame plaques in Cooperstown, which of course my hometown.
- 33:32Speaker 2: Babe Ruth right, so it's George Herman, Babe Ruth and
- 33:36Speaker 2: Babe is in is in quotations. So when Melissa Matthews
- 33:41Speaker 2: gets her Hall of Fame plaque, it'll say Melissa, Missy
- 33:46Speaker 2: matt and the Missy you being quotes.
- 33:48Speaker 3: Don't you think that's the way it's gonna go. I
- 33:50Speaker 3: definitely think it's that. It'll go from eminem to eminem
- 33:52Speaker 3: plus m. Yes.
- 33:53Speaker 2: So I had a question, Missy, thank you for being
- 33:57Speaker 2: with us, Thanks for jumping in this feel the whole
- 33:59Speaker 2: rock cast group, right He was like, right now, So
- 34:03Speaker 2: this is what it feels like, Missy, to be up
- 34:06Speaker 2: in the climate controlled. You know it's not raining up here.
- 34:09Speaker 3: It's yeah, I need to have in your pockets because
- 34:13Speaker 3: you don't have access to it.
- 34:14Speaker 2: We could open up this window. It could be one
- 34:16Speaker 2: hundred and ten, it could be thirty two. We don't know.
- 34:17Speaker 2: Because we're in a nice air condition, comfort to the
- 34:19Speaker 2: booth while Missy's out there trumping around rain. It's like
- 34:23Speaker 2: the like the US Postal Service. Missy will deliver in
- 34:26Speaker 2: whatever weather.
- 34:27Speaker 3: That's right.
- 34:28Speaker 6: And I'm still wearing a sweatshirt because I just can't
- 34:30Speaker 6: gay to it.
- 34:31Speaker 4: And then one of the ladies at the cafteria was like,
- 34:33Speaker 4: did he get a cold outside?
- 34:34Speaker 6: I was like, no, I'm just committed at this point
- 34:37Speaker 6: and I just need to take a shower.
- 34:39Speaker 3: Missy. I have a question for you.
- 34:40Speaker 2: Were you on a dance tea because you were like
- 34:44Speaker 2: a professional dance team person.
- 34:46Speaker 6: Right, I was on the dance team at Page.
- 34:48Speaker 2: Okay, that's to me, a professional dance team person today,
- 34:50Speaker 2: in today's age, you would have gotten paid.
- 34:52Speaker 3: For doing that, So you have a nil deal you ye?
- 34:56Speaker 3: Were you at Plumb High School? Yes?
- 34:59Speaker 2: Okay, so we did a high school football game Franklin
- 35:05Speaker 2: Regional at Plumb, So you were on. Do you remember
- 35:10Speaker 2: that game being on? Because because we were the first,
- 35:13Speaker 2: we were the first station that actually started televising high
- 35:16Speaker 2: school football game, so when we would go they would
- 35:19Speaker 2: kind of blow it out and they'd be like marching
- 35:21Speaker 2: bands and all kinds of stuff, especially early. Well, I
- 35:25Speaker 2: know Pat McAfee was punting for the team. So were
- 35:28Speaker 2: you guys at Plumb at the same time.
- 35:30Speaker 4: Yes, but I'm older than Pat, okay by a year.
- 35:35Speaker 3: I'm older than Missy.
- 35:37Speaker 4: Back Well, I'm three years older than my brother and
- 35:42Speaker 4: Pat's a year older than him.
- 35:44Speaker 3: So it's okay, all right, So you might so if
- 35:47Speaker 3: it was his senior year, you would have been gone.
- 35:51Speaker 3: That would have been very cool.
- 35:52Speaker 2: If you've been on that, if you've been on the
- 35:53Speaker 2: dance smer something. So when we first started telling Max,
- 35:58Speaker 2: when we first started doing high school football games, and
- 36:01Speaker 2: we didn't have Wolf on as a broadcaster yet, we'd
- 36:03Speaker 2: have Kevin Gorman would come on, Mike White, others would
- 36:05Speaker 2: come on and provide the color because it was more
- 36:08Speaker 2: about what do you know about the school and its
- 36:10Speaker 2: history and the marching band had come out, and you know,
- 36:13Speaker 2: it was just like a it was almost like a
- 36:15Speaker 2: mini celebration. The outcome of the game wasn't important to
- 36:20Speaker 2: uh to really at the beginning, to the people that
- 36:23Speaker 2: I think was then root sports. And we've been through
- 36:26Speaker 2: some name iterations over the years.
- 36:29Speaker 3: It might you know, what a problem. Thank you.
- 36:33Speaker 2: I only worked there, Missy, but I'm sure you're right, No,
- 36:36Speaker 2: I know, and I'm not trying to be facetious or sarcastic.
- 36:39Speaker 2: I'm sure you're right.
- 36:40Speaker 6: I only because when I.
- 36:43Speaker 3: Okay, so I don't miss the entering there there. And
- 36:46Speaker 3: when I came on the Stan Safron Show as a rookie,
- 36:49Speaker 3: it was f s.
- 36:49Speaker 2: Cent and I remember Max Way. I remember I remember
- 36:53Speaker 2: Max coming into our UH into it. We had that story.
- 36:55Speaker 2: We talked about that last year when he and Ben
- 36:57Speaker 2: came in to do the show with Stan. I remember
- 37:01Speaker 2: what I told him was Ben walked in and I'm like,
- 37:04Speaker 2: that's a quarterback. I mean, you put that guy into
- 37:07Speaker 2: a weight program. He's two hundred and ninety pounds and
- 37:10Speaker 2: he's got his hand in the dirt, you know yet
- 37:13Speaker 2: and then Max walked in. I was like, WHOA, that's
- 37:16Speaker 2: most protecting me? Oh yeah, wow yeah.
- 37:21Speaker 3: But yeah.
- 37:22Speaker 2: So when I was calling UH hockey games HL hockey
- 37:27Speaker 2: games in Syracuse, I called them for two different companies.
- 37:32Speaker 2: Are company, which was WTVH and then they allowed me
- 37:35Speaker 2: to do them for the local cable company. And there
- 37:38Speaker 2: was a post to my left and the only thing
- 37:42Speaker 2: written on that post was which station I was on
- 37:45Speaker 2: that night.
- 37:45Speaker 3: And I only called ten a year. I'd be like
- 37:48Speaker 3: you're watching Crunch Hockey on TVH.
- 37:51Speaker 2: I'd looked if I left him whatever I had written there.
- 37:53Speaker 2: So I don't remember when it was around teleprompter, FSN
- 37:58Speaker 2: the Fox Sports Net to Root Sports or what order
- 38:01Speaker 2: they were in, but you were an intern and it
- 38:02Speaker 2: was f s N.
- 38:03Speaker 6: But it was a Pittsburgh and St.
- 38:06Speaker 3: Louis that's right.
- 38:07Speaker 5: Oh gosh, yes, do you know those games as well?
- 38:14Speaker 2: I remember doing both shows and that the names of
- 38:17Speaker 2: the shows were similar, and people said, you know, how
- 38:20Speaker 2: do you keep it straight? And I will admit that
- 38:23Speaker 2: I one time, so the Rams were still in Saint
- 38:26Speaker 2: Louis at the time, I one time on the air
- 38:29Speaker 2: said Rams quarterback Cordell Stewart. Nope, no, that's not that's
- 38:36Speaker 2: not correct. That's the only one I ever remember before
- 38:40Speaker 2: Adam Schefter. I'm sure I did other ones, but but
- 38:44Speaker 2: that is so missy missy intern for us. But I
- 38:48Speaker 2: thought that would have been another seven degrees of Kevin
- 38:51Speaker 2: Bacon because I know you were over there. It's this
- 38:53Speaker 2: started with the conversation that you were over there talking
- 38:56Speaker 2: to Pat McAfee. I told Mac, I saw that would
- 39:00Speaker 2: have been cool if you've been on the the the
- 39:03Speaker 2: the performance squad is called dance squad. Cheer squad would
- 39:06Speaker 2: be called the high school dance teamer cheers dance steamer.
- 39:09Speaker 3: Okay because both of them marching mates. Yeah, you didn't
- 39:16Speaker 3: play an instrument.
- 39:16Speaker 2: You were a yeah, you were an athletic.
- 39:19Speaker 4: Uh.
- 39:20Speaker 2: What are they cheer squad, cheer squad, dance squad, dance team,
- 39:24Speaker 2: dance team okay, dance ta.
- 39:25Speaker 3: Yeah, dance team and cheer squad. Yeah, we're two different ones. Okay.
- 39:29Speaker 3: One had pomp poms, the other ones didn't.
- 39:31Speaker 4: Right, so we had we had gold pomp poms. The
- 39:34Speaker 4: cheerleaders had blue pumps.
- 39:36Speaker 3: Ah, okay, you mixed up. It was the problem a lot.
- 39:41Speaker 2: Yeah, so there was a there was a was there
- 39:44Speaker 2: like a haughty relationship between the two.
- 39:47Speaker 6: It depended on the gear and the girls.
- 39:49Speaker 4: But ironically enough, one of my friends that I danced
- 39:54Speaker 4: with since I was three at Abby Lee's, she's the crazy.
- 39:57Speaker 3: Oh yeah from Dance Moms. Oh wow. Yeah.
- 40:00Speaker 4: We danced together forever and we both did not make
- 40:03Speaker 4: it through our high school year before we were like,
- 40:07Speaker 4: we're out and we were roommates. Actually it pit for
- 40:13Speaker 4: our entire year, but we were first in towers where
- 40:16Speaker 4: it was just the two of us, but she tried
- 40:18Speaker 4: out for cheerleading.
- 40:19Speaker 6: I tried out for dance team. So we were never
- 40:23Speaker 6: you know, going back and forth. But you heard the drama.
- 40:26Speaker 2: From our room.
- 40:28Speaker 6: Knew everything.
- 40:29Speaker 2: So I remember you tell me this dance mom's is
- 40:31Speaker 2: a Is that like a show or something?
- 40:33Speaker 3: Yes? It is. Yeah, yeah, definitely watched that.
- 40:36Speaker 6: So I don't know if we should add that to
- 40:37Speaker 6: the rob King Traveler.
- 40:42Speaker 2: So yeah, I'm I'm very very slow to the party,
- 40:48Speaker 2: as you guys know when it comes to cultural events.
- 40:50Speaker 2: Let's just say that I had to figure out something
- 40:54Speaker 2: technical this morning and Bob Labriola was helping me out,
- 40:57Speaker 2: and Matt Williamson said, wait a minute, Bob's helping you
- 41:00Speaker 2: thought you got You've got problems many technological stuff, you know,
- 41:05Speaker 2: the the latest trends and stuff. But dance Moms.
- 41:09Speaker 3: Okay, so not for me.
- 41:10Speaker 6: No, okay, all right, google it and watch a quick trailer.
- 41:14Speaker 3: All you need to do, ye is watch a clip.
- 41:16Speaker 2: You're like, yep, this isn't so in case you're wondering,
- 41:20Speaker 2: this is the two other members of our broadcast team
- 41:22Speaker 2: calling me old.
- 41:23Speaker 3: So just just you know, that's that's the quick translation.
- 41:26Speaker 3: What's going on? You're saving me? Okay, you're saving Okay,
- 41:31Speaker 3: yes it is not your cop. Okay, all right, all right, okay, yes,
- 41:35Speaker 3: I yes, I have my own cups of tea.
- 41:37Speaker 2: But but when we were at when we were I
- 41:39Speaker 2: was telling Max that you know, when you go to
- 41:41Speaker 2: these high school games, we saw lots of great players.
- 41:45Speaker 2: I mean, look, I saw Drell Reeves, many many I
- 41:49Speaker 2: called many games from uh oh my god, Penhills, Aaron Donald,
- 41:54Speaker 2: Aaron Donald, Wow, Rob Aaron Donald. You know all these
- 41:57Speaker 2: great players that I called, But I don't ever remember
- 42:00Speaker 2: we're seeing anybody close to kicking the ball the way
- 42:04Speaker 2: Pat When he and I was down in the field,
- 42:06Speaker 2: I was like whoa.
- 42:08Speaker 3: And then I then I called some.
- 42:09Speaker 2: Of his games at I think maybe the last year
- 42:12Speaker 2: or two it West Virginia. We then we then picked
- 42:15Speaker 2: up some of the West Virginia broadcasts. I think, I
- 42:18Speaker 2: think I maybe got his junior and senior years, I think.
- 42:21Speaker 3: But you know, he was just a.
- 42:22Speaker 4: Soccer player who the high school city coach big to
- 42:26Speaker 4: only come to games.
- 42:27Speaker 6: Right, yeah, which is like the crazy part.
- 42:29Speaker 3: Right.
- 42:29Speaker 2: So we had the story down and all that and
- 42:31Speaker 2: all the other stuff. But as I told Max, you know,
- 42:35Speaker 2: we would never talk to the players. We would always
- 42:38Speaker 2: I would. My contact was always with the coaches, you know,
- 42:42Speaker 2: Craig McConnell and other people who go out and talk
- 42:43Speaker 2: to the coaches, to the players.
- 42:45Speaker 3: You know, because that was like it was like pit game.
- 42:48Speaker 2: I mean it was Penguin's game, Penguins game, Penguins game,
- 42:50Speaker 2: high school football.
- 42:51Speaker 3: Game, you know.
- 42:52Speaker 2: So so you know, and I and you know, I
- 42:54Speaker 2: was getting ready for the play by play. So I
- 42:56Speaker 2: never talked to the players. So I've never actually met Pat,
- 42:58Speaker 2: but I just remember seeing that the impression he made
- 43:01Speaker 2: the first time when he kicked the ball, I'm like,
- 43:03Speaker 2: whoa man, I've never seen a high school kid kick
- 43:06Speaker 2: a ball.
- 43:06Speaker 3: Like that as it was professional as a professional level
- 43:09Speaker 3: future kicker.
- 43:10Speaker 6: I think Pat was on.
- 43:11Speaker 4: At least one of the whippy Old championships for Plump
- 43:14Speaker 4: Soccer too.
- 43:14Speaker 3: Oh, I wouldn't doubt it.
- 43:16Speaker 6: I could be too. I can't.
- 43:18Speaker 4: The years are all overlapping and you know, getting a
- 43:21Speaker 4: little fuzzy.
- 43:21Speaker 6: But oh they were. They were a bad you know
- 43:25Speaker 6: what team.
- 43:26Speaker 3: Yes, they were phenomenal. Yeah, And I'm trying to think
- 43:31Speaker 3: how many guys on his on his crew were went
- 43:34Speaker 3: to school with him. I know, you said Diggs, right, Digs.
- 43:37Speaker 4: Anthony to Guilio, which I still call him Anthony because
- 43:40Speaker 4: his parents had called him his entire life.
- 43:42Speaker 6: I mayby sat him and his little brother Michael, which
- 43:45Speaker 6: we called him little Michael, and I was like, hey,
- 43:47Speaker 6: how's little Michael, Like, yeah, he's a grown adult.
- 43:50Speaker 3: Yeah, but your big sister though, you know what I'm saying,
- 43:53Speaker 3: You're your big sister to all these guys. So yeah,
- 43:55Speaker 3: and like he had the.
- 43:57Speaker 6: Best house to his parents.
- 43:59Speaker 4: We called it Paaradie Digs in their backyard, the coolest
- 44:03Speaker 4: cabana bar, tiki bar, pull like whole nine.
- 44:06Speaker 6: Yards and they were like, there's still some of my
- 44:09Speaker 6: favorite people.
- 44:09Speaker 4: Like I was sad his mom couldn't come up today, yeah,
- 44:12Speaker 4: because she had to do some work.
- 44:14Speaker 6: But Nick Mouraldo, who he's more behind the scenes, but
- 44:18Speaker 6: he's on the show too.
- 44:19Speaker 3: Okay, both were.
- 44:21Speaker 4: At Plumb at the same time. I don't know if
- 44:24Speaker 4: Nick is Pat's age or Digs, but yeah, so those
- 44:27Speaker 4: two for sure.
- 44:28Speaker 3: Yeah see so yeah, so when I said, I'm like,
- 44:30Speaker 3: was this is like a homecoming for the Pat McAfee show, Like,
- 44:34Speaker 3: I mean, this is that pilgrimage that they make back home,
- 44:37Speaker 3: because this is, like I said, they're they're yensers there,
- 44:40Speaker 3: they're from here. They grew up watching practice on this
- 44:44Speaker 3: set very hill. Yes, you know, as young kids. So
- 44:47Speaker 3: I mean, and it is. That's the coolest part about this,
- 44:49Speaker 3: right that you kind of have this full circle moment
- 44:52Speaker 3: where you know, he's doing punt passing kick in Hinsfield
- 44:56Speaker 3: and then you become the punter for the Cult and
- 44:58Speaker 3: you're punting in Heinsfield as a pro. Oh and now
- 45:01Speaker 3: you're able to bring your your highly successful television show
- 45:05Speaker 3: back here and have a set at Saint Vincent College's
- 45:09Speaker 3: pretty it's pretty dope.
- 45:10Speaker 4: Well, I'm excited because I've missed a ton of it,
- 45:12Speaker 4: although they do kind of have like a PA system
- 45:15Speaker 4: over there so you can do some of it, and
- 45:16Speaker 4: the camp Off has had it on TV. But I
- 45:18Speaker 4: just want to go back and watch the interviews with
- 45:20Speaker 4: McCarthy and Aaron and I think DK was on with
- 45:23Speaker 4: Erin for a little bit.
- 45:24Speaker 6: I know, I think Cam and TJ and Omar.
- 45:26Speaker 3: Were going on.
- 45:27Speaker 6: Heesel was on earlier.
- 45:28Speaker 4: Yeah, they just extract things from their guests that are just.
- 45:32Speaker 3: Yeah, you can't get anywhere else.
- 45:34Speaker 6: Yes, and I love those nuggets.
- 45:36Speaker 3: So, by the way, we are preposterously over.
- 45:39Speaker 2: But we know I'm gonna make here. I am on
- 45:41Speaker 2: radio agains. I have to point these things, so Max
- 45:43Speaker 2: will occasionally gesture it. I have to have to point
- 45:45Speaker 2: out that people. For those of us who can't see
- 45:48Speaker 2: us on radio today, Max is now thrusting his arm
- 45:50Speaker 2: in the air.
- 45:51Speaker 3: Whatever. So I've been making this.
- 45:52Speaker 2: I've been making the Missy completes this motion, this circle
- 45:55Speaker 2: with my hands. Missy has completed us. It's nice to
- 45:58Speaker 2: have you in here, miss.
- 45:59Speaker 3: Because we don't get Missy because she's fancy on television
- 46:03Speaker 3: in the preseason and so we don't get Missy till
- 46:06Speaker 3: the regular season. But we do get Missy on the show.
- 46:08Speaker 2: Yes, and we'll only Missy will only be here for
- 46:10Speaker 2: another three weeks.
- 46:11Speaker 3: So we'd love to see.
- 46:12Speaker 2: If you gotta pop down and say hello, we are here.
- 46:15Speaker 3: You know where to find us. Yeah, absolutely, a special.
- 46:18Speaker 2: Guest appearance from Missy Matthews for Max Starks. I'm rob
- 46:23Speaker 2: king the drive is coming up with west Euler Matt Williamson.
- 46:25Speaker 2: We thank you for listening to us in the locker
- 46:27Speaker 2: room here on this two there's audio network,
