- 0:00Obviously not the outcome that we
- 0:02wanted.
- 0:03Um, but
- 0:06the big challenge, the biggest challenge
- 0:07that I made to our team was to respond
- 0:11in some ways that really didn't have to
- 0:12do with basketball
- 0:15versus relative to our last game. So, I
- 0:18thought uh we did a good job doing that.
- 0:21um just competing just uh managing bad
- 0:27things that happen during the course of
- 0:29a game which which happens to every
- 0:31team. I just think there were a lot of
- 0:33areas normal areas that I I think some
- 0:37of our older guys particularly should
- 0:39handle better and we did that better
- 0:41today. Um and that's a process of still
- 0:43getting better at some of that stuff and
- 0:45it'll allow us to to to play better
- 0:48ultimately. Um, so you know, it's a hard
- 0:51team to beat in this building. Um,
- 0:53thought we did some good things. Uh,
- 0:55didn't play particularly well. We got
- 0:57the ball around the basket some. I
- 0:59thought the officials did a good job. I
- 1:00will I, you know, probably not too many
- 1:02people say that about the officials, but
- 1:04I thought overall I thought they did a
- 1:06pretty good job. I mean, there's a
- 1:07couple plays here or there um that
- 1:09probably both coaches were mad at, but
- 1:11um, overall I thought it was a hard
- 1:13game. It was a physical game. a lot of
- 1:15driving and attacking and you know when
- 1:17one person's going really hard to the
- 1:19rim and one person has to do one of two
- 1:21things get in the way or get out of the
- 1:23way and so unless you want to give up
- 1:25400 points in a game you have to get in
- 1:27the way and so there were a lot of
- 1:29collisions and a lot of uh a lot of
- 1:32physical play I thought overall I
- 1:35thought they did a pretty good job but
- 1:36um anyway so we're just we're still
- 1:39focusing on getting better
- 1:40>> John
- 1:42>> seemed like the effort and
- 1:43competitiveness was much different today
- 1:46versus Wednesday. Um, how how did that
- 1:49come about?
- 1:52>> Well, that was one of the things that we
- 1:55talked about. I mean, like I said, just
- 1:58a laundry list of some things that
- 2:01really didn't have to do with uh play
- 2:04off of two feet, uh ball fake before you
- 2:08pass, uh finish strong at the rim, use
- 2:11your pump fakes, all these basketball
- 2:14things, those were not basketball
- 2:16things. Uh competitiveness is a huge
- 2:19one. This league is what this league is
- 2:21all about. Um, and so, you know, like I
- 2:24said, I challenged the guys to that. Our
- 2:26whole pregame speech was that, you know,
- 2:28everybody's got this this grand uh plan,
- 2:32master plan before the game about all
- 2:36these X's and O's and like if you don't
- 2:39do those things, then there's what did
- 2:41you even come here for? Um, and that's
- 2:43the way it felt in the Arkansas game at
- 2:46points, particularly once the league got
- 2:47big. But uh but this this this game in
- 2:50the pregame, that's all we talked about
- 2:52was really non-basket things, competing
- 2:55um handling handling adversity in a way
- 2:59that you can very quickly get yourself
- 3:03refocused on exactly what is being said
- 3:06for the next play. The last one's
- 3:09history. Um and so I thought we did a
- 3:12much better job of of that today. front
- 3:14middle here.
- 3:15>> You held
- 3:17to 17 points, one for eight from three.
- 3:20Talk about the defensive effort on those
- 3:21two and then also
- 3:24impact number 38.
- 3:25>> Yeah, you know, it was uh it was well
- 3:28his impact was obvious. Um
- 3:32uh you know it was almost as if you
- 3:37exerted so much energy and getting the
- 3:41two main culprits
- 3:45slowed down that then you know someone
- 3:48had to do something and he seized his
- 3:51opportunity. What a great deal these
- 3:53guys have. this is what their life is as
- 3:56you get these opportunities and you
- 3:58seize one and then and then who knows
- 4:00what that does for you as you move
- 4:02forward in your career and so you know
- 4:05good on him for for doing that but I I
- 4:07do think we didn't compete the way we
- 4:09needed to around the basket like some of
- 4:10those were just we relented I mean so he
- 4:14had a really he had a really big impact
- 4:16we started double in the post once we
- 4:18you know in fact our guys asked for the
- 4:19double which ah they asked if we should
- 4:22double team it and I I you know I am
- 4:25come from the school where
- 4:28I don't want to ask for a double team.
- 4:29Like I we're we're not double teaming
- 4:31any one human but we needed to. So we
- 4:34switched to double team. I thought that
- 4:35was effective for a little bit. Um but
- 4:38uh rough night for the other two guys. I
- 4:40was in foul trouble and um so uh I was
- 4:44glad we did a good job on them. But but
- 4:46certainly um there was there needed to
- 4:48be more work done in our interior uh
- 4:51post post defense. in the middle over
- 4:54here.
- 4:55>> Coach, under 70 points on the road plus
- 4:5715 turnovers against this Auburn team.
- 4:58What did they do defensively that kind
- 5:00of limited you guys in getting in a flow
- 5:02on offense?
- 5:03>> They switch everything. So, you know,
- 5:05some of the some of the uh some of the
- 5:08uh actions are
- 5:11not as effective. Um, and then when that
- 5:14happens,
- 5:15your natural instinct as a young player
- 5:19is to uh be stagnant versus moving and
- 5:25moving more is exactly what you need to
- 5:27do. Um, so I I think that was part of
- 5:30it. Then then we got some matchups that
- 5:31we liked. We attacked uh off the
- 5:34dribble. We didn't finish well around
- 5:36the basket. Um, I don't know what the
- 5:38numbers say specifically, but my
- 5:40eyeballs in a couple of key situations
- 5:42that I thought we could have got
- 5:43something done down there. We we uh we
- 5:46made a good decision in getting down
- 5:48there and then weren't able to. Again,
- 5:49it was physical. There was physical.
- 5:51There was, you know, they called some
- 5:52fouls. There were some other plays I
- 5:54thought were physical. I mean, they they
- 5:55they play a physical brand of defense
- 5:57that way. So, we just didn't have as
- 5:58much success driving and finishing
- 6:00around the basket and creating some
- 6:02shots off of uh the three and posting
- 6:04up. That was the other thing that I
- 6:05would have liked to done a little bit
- 6:06more just if they're going to switch
- 6:07some of those things. Get the ball
- 6:08inside. We tried here and there to
- 6:12varying levels of success. So, um, but
- 6:15they switched a lot of things and they
- 6:16with with athletes and and so, you know,
- 6:19slows you down a little bit, but some of
- 6:20our turnovers were just decisions like
- 6:22and just not strong with the ball. It
- 6:23wasn't some sort of surprise trap or a
- 6:27couple times just a just a decision that
- 6:29we made that was pretty straightforward
- 6:30decision that we made poorly. Anything
- 6:33else for coach John?
- 6:38>> A little less than five minutes left.
- 6:39They took their first double digit lead
- 6:41on on the transition dunk in the pick
- 6:43six that that you call it. Y'all y'all
- 6:45bounced right back there to make it
- 6:47competitive again. What what um who who
- 6:51was kind of spearheading that for you
- 6:52guys and and not letting this the game
- 6:55get out of control like it has before?
- 6:56>> Yeah, we I mean we had a we we we showed
- 6:59more much more poise in those
- 7:01situations. That was one of the things
- 7:02that was on the board. Didn't have
- 7:03anything to do with basketball of all
- 7:04the things to handle. One was uh just a
- 7:10a burst, a run that another team makes
- 7:12and then you have to handle that and
- 7:13what are you going to do? Um how are you
- 7:15going to respond to that? And it did
- 7:16look there was one point we took a
- 7:18questionable shot or something happened.
- 7:20I think it was a questionable shot or we
- 7:21turned it over. It was about to be a
- 7:22turnover and then we got the ball back.
- 7:25And I thought that was key because if
- 7:26you don't then it runs out. Then it is
- 7:28then it does. It's hard for those guys
- 7:30at that point to say, "Okay, we're still
- 7:33right here." Um whereas we got that ball
- 7:35back. I think we ended up scoring on
- 7:36that one and it just settled some things
- 7:38down. But um you know um Mei's voice was
- 7:42really good. I heard some other guys
- 7:44talking too saying some more. We talked
- 7:46about encouragement of one another and
- 7:48and the different ways that you can
- 7:50encourage someone and you can encourage
- 7:52someone in in a pretty aggressive way if
- 7:55they need it sometimes, too. And so I
- 7:57did feel like there was more of that.
- 7:59Our huddles were better. I said we got
- 8:01destroyed in the Arkansas game on the
- 8:03huddle situations. I mean, we were just
- 8:05on our own island. And you know, these
- 8:08guys guys in this day and age, they're
- 8:11not selfish,
- 8:13but everything in their lives has
- 8:15revolved around them. They are
- 8:18self-centered in the in in a in a the
- 8:20most
- 8:22realistic actual way that's not selfish,
- 8:26but they are used to everything being
- 8:28revolving around them. And so when they
- 8:30do anything, the first, second, and
- 8:32third thing they're thinking about is
- 8:34themselves and how it affects them and
- 8:35then how it's going to affect the next
- 8:36thing that they're going to do. And so
- 8:38getting out of that and changing some of
- 8:40that, I think, is uh is important for
- 8:42us. And so I thought there were some
- 8:44real strides made on that. But we had a
- 8:46lot of guys saying some stuff, but Mei
- 8:47certainly was uh was a very calming
- 8:51voice uh with his teammates.
- 8:54>> Appreciate it, coach. Thanks.
