Latest / Mini Scroll / MINI SCROLL: Izzy Darnell BamaRush troll, BFFs Podcast vs. Just Trish + LAInfluencerSnark subreddit drama
Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:14I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:18media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to mini scroll,
- 0:23everyone. I have revived.
- 0:26I have risen from my horrific sinus and that I had, I mean, I
- 0:31could tell I was coming down on Friday.
- 0:33I think I said that on the pod. And then Saturday it just hit me
- 0:37full force and I was down for the cow for four straight days.
- 0:40I'm so sorry that I missed Monday and Tuesday.
- 0:42I hate missing Mini when it's not planned.
- 0:45I hate feeling like flaky, like I flaked on you guys.
- 0:48So I'm really sorry, but I am back.
- 0:51I am revived, I am recovered and let's get into mini today.
- 0:55Also, I think Annabelle put this in the community notes on
- 0:57YouTube, but in case you didn't see it, I'm going to have a mini
- 1:00today. I'm also going to have a mini
- 1:02tomorrow. And then I do have a deep dive
- 1:04going up. It's an interview with my friend
- 1:06Cam and his co-author Ariel on their new book which is called
- 1:10Conspiracy Nation. And it's all about conspiracy
- 1:13theories, why different people fall down these pipelines, what
- 1:16we can take away from it. So it's a really interesting
- 1:19interview. So that's going to be our deep
- 1:21dive going up tomorrow. But I will also have a mini
- 1:23scroll going up for you guys tomorrow to say sorry for
- 1:26missing Monday and Tuesday. OK, the first story that I have
- 1:28for you guys is, is I'm going to be talking about everything
- 1:32going on with Bama Rush and Izzy Darnell.
- 1:35So I am sure that you guys are familiar with Bama Rush and the
- 1:38Darnell family. I actually talked about Kylin
- 1:41Darnell and how she was not going to be doing Rush and
- 1:44Sorority life. I was going to say in season 4
- 1:47in her senior year. OK, I'm sorry.
- 1:49I am like so while I was sick, all I did was binge Narcos.
- 1:53I've never seen Narcos but I love like that kind of vibe.
- 1:56Like I love a gritty drama. I'm so interested in like closed
- 2:00communities that feel like they operate above the law and have
- 2:05their own like parameters and rules and regulations.
- 2:07That's why I'm also really into Mormonism.
- 2:09So anyways, I was so into Narcos.
- 2:12Right now my brain is just rotted into thinking about
- 2:15everything in seasons because I'm like, oh, I'm in the middle
- 2:17of season 2 and I only have season 3 left.
- 2:20And then I know that there's Narcos Mexico.
- 2:21Anyways, if you guys have seen Narcos, let me know because I'm
- 2:24obsessed and I want any chance to talk about it.
- 2:27But yes, Kylin was not returning to sorority life for her 4th
- 2:31year, her senior year of college.
- 2:33And so her little sister Izzy, now there's some stuff going on
- 2:36with her in Bama Rush. So Kylin has the younger sister
- 2:39Izzy, who has gone pretty viral on TikTok.
- 2:42One of her most iconic moments was when she like, quote UN
- 2:45quote, fell into the pool while she was getting ready for her
- 2:48prom. I am sure a lot of you guys have
- 2:50seen this video. She is known for being a lot
- 2:53more chaotic than Kylin. And people thought that when
- 2:57they saw her starting to rush. OK, like she actually might not
- 3:00get into a house because she's quite polarizing online.
- 3:03There's I guess a lot of rules about how sorority girls and
- 3:07PNMS can post online. For example, they can't post
- 3:10with alcohol in some sororities. So people had questions about if
- 3:14Izzy would get in regardless. So yeah, Izzy started going
- 3:17super viral earlier this month for sharing her outfits of the
- 3:20day, just like Hyland going into Rush.
- 3:22But the comments were overwhelmingly negative.
- 3:25People kept saying that she wasn't taking Rush seriously and
- 3:29there was just like a a lot of criticism around how she was
- 3:32presenting herself around Rush. This spawned a bunch of
- 3:36different, I don't want to say conspiracy theories, but just
- 3:40like I guess discussion points or questions around Izzy around
- 3:44this time. So first, many social media
- 3:46users were not even convinced that Izzy was attending the
- 3:49University of Alabama, let alone Rushing.
- 3:52This was because Izzy was never spotted filming in what seemed
- 3:55to be a dorm and it is generally required I guess that Bama for
- 3:59freshmen to live on campus. Second, assuming that Izzy was
- 4:02in fact attending the University of Alabama, social media users
- 4:06were sad that she didn't attend U Miami, claiming that she could
- 4:09have been the next Alex Earl. So that was like another piece
- 4:11of criticism that was going on in her comments.
- 4:14And 3rd, some viewers questioned whether all of Izzy's outfits of
- 4:17the day get ready with me is were pre recorded and claimed
- 4:20that she was faking the rush process for views.
- 4:23And then perhaps most damning I guess she used to start her
- 4:26videos like Hey girlfriends and then now during rush she started
- 4:31saying hey fools. So people were like is that a
- 4:33hint that she is like trolling us?
- 4:35So it seems like all the questions were answered when she
- 4:39posted a video toward the end of last week.
- 4:41Instead of sharing her outfit of the day, Izzy was standing on a
- 4:43beach. She was handed an envelope that
- 4:46had her name on it before ripping it up and throwing it in
- 4:49the water and the text on screen read Haha fooled y'all again
- 4:54along with the caption. Little do you know I dropped
- 4:57first. So this video was poking fun at
- 4:59bid day which the day that students receive an invitation
- 5:01to join a specific sorority and the caption referenced the
- 5:05rumors that Izzy have been dropped by different sororities
- 5:08including Beta, Zeta, Beta, Zeta.
- 5:10I don't know Zeta, sorry. So now Izzy has gone on to
- 5:14address her Bama Rush experience in a get ready with me.
- 5:17In the video, she shared that she went into Rush with the full
- 5:19intention to join a sorority, but she later came to the
- 5:22conclusion that it just wasn't for her.
- 5:24She also ended up speaking out about the rumors that Zeta had
- 5:27dropped her. Izzy clarified that she placed
- 5:29Zeta in her bottom three preferences because she, quote,
- 5:32didn't want to be Kylin. On top of this, she didn't want
- 5:35to take a spot from someone who truly wanted Zeta.
- 5:38She also added her concerns about adhering to the sorority
- 5:40rules while posting on social media, admitting that it was
- 5:44something that she was not so sure she could easily do.
- 5:47Now, Izzy and Kylin's mom, who also has a TikTok presence and
- 5:51has been very divisive and has been kind of like starting for
- 5:56her daughters. I don't know if it's, I don't
- 5:58think it's on purpose, but I don't think she necessarily
- 6:00really cares, it seems. So she's fueling a lot of
- 6:04rumors, I guess around her daughter's right now based on
- 6:06stuff she's posting. So she also spoke out about the
- 6:09situation in the video. Her mom confirmed that Izzy
- 6:12actually did rush, but she admitted that she wasn't quite
- 6:15sure about the process the whole time.
- 6:17You know, I think Rush talk was really fun in the earlier years,
- 6:21like when it really popped off, it was like 2021-2022, right?
- 6:26And that was kind of the first time that we got to see
- 6:28something like that documented because it's also kind of
- 6:31frowned upon to document, you know?
- 6:33But like, that was really the first time that I think people
- 6:35around the world or people who just like didn't go to college
- 6:38or didn't do the sorority Rush experience at all, got like a
- 6:42peek, a glimpse into what it's actually like outside of movies
- 6:45and stuff, right? And that was like really
- 6:47exciting. But I actually feel like the
- 6:49moment for Rush Talk has kind of ended.
- 6:51We understand how it goes. It's realistically not as
- 6:54interesting as I think people thought it might be.
- 6:57We understand the type of girl that gets in.
- 6:59We can spot more following Rush Talk.
- 7:01We can spot a fuck. That girl's not going to get
- 7:03chosen, you know, And it's always for the same reason.
- 7:06It is such a shitty system sometimes.
- 7:09And yeah, I just feel like in general, the moment for Rush
- 7:11Talk is over. And I definitely think the fact
- 7:14that Kylin and now Izzy who were like, I mean, Kylin was like
- 7:19literally like the Rush Talk girl for so long has left
- 7:23sorority life for her final year.
- 7:24I think it's possible we will see the reins being pulled in
- 7:28tighter and tighter around these girls that want to have Internet
- 7:30presences while also being in sororities.
- 7:33I think eventually those reins will have to loosen.
- 7:35But I think for the first little while, they'll try and pull them
- 7:38in tighter and say, like, you cannot post this because, you
- 7:40know, one of the major kind of theories around Kylin stepping
- 7:43away from sorority life in her final year is because she was
- 7:46like asked to because of her online presence and how divisive
- 7:50that can be in the controversies around her sometimes.
- 7:53And like that just goes with being on the Internet,
- 7:55obviously. I think in general, it's just
- 7:56another example of how an industry, in this case Greek
- 7:59life, was just not ready for TikTok and the influence, the
- 8:03impact that TikTok would have on their industry.
- 8:07OK, the next word that I have for you guys is I'm going to
- 8:10break down the drama scandal between the BFFS podcast and
- 8:16Oscar Gracie from just Trish. So this all started after Josh
- 8:21Richards and Brianna Chicken Fry from the NFS podcast were asked
- 8:25to interview Adam Sandler for Happy Gilmore. 2O was asked to
- 8:29react to the interview while live streaming.
- 8:31Oscar has a background in entertainment journalism and in
- 8:34the stream he questioned why Brianna and Josh got to
- 8:38interview Adam Sandler in the 1st place, saying that it felt
- 8:42kind of random. Brianna and Josh later reacted
- 8:44to Oscar's comments and Trish was kind of grouped in there.
- 8:47Trisha Paytas, even though she didn't really say anything about
- 8:50the interview. But you know, Oscar is the
- 8:51producer. I think it is.
- 8:52That was somebody. Is he the producer?
- 8:54I think he's her producer of the Just Trish podcast.
- 8:58In their reaction, they questioned why the Just Trish
- 9:00podcast is always talking about them and the BFFS podcast,
- 9:05especially because they rarely respond.
- 9:08And now Tricia and Oscar have gone on to respond to their
- 9:10response. So Tricia spoke about how it can
- 9:13be triggering to be caught up in this drama, especially with
- 9:15Brianna, given that she has body shamed Tricia at one point.
- 9:19If you guys don't remember, a video of Barstool employees
- 9:22started circulating of them reacting to Trisha Paytas is
- 9:25Only Fans. This was like a few years ago
- 9:27and Brianna was in this and she was sharing the video with her
- 9:30colleagues. Trisha also added that she has
- 9:32been trying to be supportive of Brianna recently given
- 9:35everything that's gone down Was that Brian?
- 9:37Oscar went on to say that he didn't really want to talk about
- 9:39this but he couldn't look past the way that Brianna made a
- 9:42quote casually homophobic remark where she implied that Oscar was
- 9:46being shady toward Josh because he has a crush on him.
- 9:50Oscar also doubled down on the fact that he is not an
- 9:52influencer. The live stream where he made
- 9:54his comments was just for fun and also only had around 600
- 9:57people watching. This left him further confused
- 10:00about the intensity of their response.
- 10:02And then on top of this, Oscar could also not understand why
- 10:05they would assume that he was jealous of BFFS for the
- 10:08interview. He was basically like, I have a
- 10:11very successful entertainment journalism career producing
- 10:14celebrity interviews. He flexed his Emmy that he has
- 10:17for producing celebrity interviews.
- 10:19So he was saying his criticism mostly came from like working in
- 10:23media that perspective. OK, so a couple things.
- 10:26I don't totally agree that Oscar is not an influencer.
- 10:29I understand he does not brand himself as that and he would not
- 10:32consider himself that. But he is like whether you are,
- 10:36you know, posting on Instagram as your full time job, Hawking
- 10:39product, making tick tocks with the creator fund or you are
- 10:43sitting as a producer, as a Co host slash producer on Trisha
- 10:46Paytas podcast and have a really big platform off the back of
- 10:49that too. I'm not saying that he didn't
- 10:51have a big career, a big platform prior to Trish.
- 10:54That's obviously partly how he got hired by Trish.
- 10:57But regardless, like being in Trish's universe now, being on
- 11:00her podcast every week, like that has obviously increased his
- 11:04influence. I do think he is kind of an
- 11:06influencer now. He is no longer behind the
- 11:08scenes. Like if I asked any given person
- 11:12who was like really into Internet culture, if they know
- 11:15who Oscar from Jess Trish is, they would probably say yes.
- 11:18So I do think more people are paying attention to him maybe
- 11:20than he realizes. But also like we all have been
- 11:24talking about, I mean, not BFFS. We don't talk about BFFS
- 11:29anymore. I don't talk about Josh
- 11:30Richards, but like pop culture, Internet culture reporting talks
- 11:34about Brianna chicken fry a lot. All of us do because she is
- 11:38constantly making news. Like there's constantly stuff
- 11:41going on. They literally acknowledge that
- 11:43on the BFFS podcast last year when she broke up with Zach and
- 11:48they did a whole episode. And I remember Dave and Josh
- 11:51both were talking about with her how, like, it's so bizarre that
- 11:55essentially they're like, pop culture, Internet culture news
- 11:57that they want to cover every week on BFFS.
- 11:59Like, Brianna's at the center of so much of it.
- 12:01So, like, that's why Trish and Oscar are talking about BFFS and
- 12:05talking about Brianna. I don't know if they're ever
- 12:07talking about Josh Richards, but, yeah.
- 12:10And I do like that Oscar stood up for himself and said what you
- 12:13said about me having a crush on Josh Richards is, like, casually
- 12:16homophobic because it absolutely is.
- 12:19But yeah, that's the feud between these two very popular
- 12:23podcast right now. OK, the last thing that I wanted
- 12:26to talk about, the last story I have for you guys is we need to
- 12:29talk about what's going on in the LA influencer snark
- 12:32subreddit. So if you are unfamiliar with
- 12:35the R/LA influencer snark subreddit, it is a very famous
- 12:39snark subreddit for basically any influencer who lives in LA.
- 12:43It currently has over 175,000 members and it started in 2022.
- 12:47This all started like 3 weeks ago when a mod named Rice Milk
- 12:51in 99 X shared a post titled The Future to the subreddit.
- 12:55It was screenshot of a statement referencing an article by The
- 12:58Cut that put forth like, less than favorable views of the
- 13:02subreddit. The statement read.
- 13:04Earlier this year, The Cut published A scathing piece on LA
- 13:07Influencer Snark, painting our members as bitter, parasocial,
- 13:10and envious of the glossy influencer world.
- 13:13It's a lazy take that ignores the lines we draw between
- 13:16deserved criticism and cruelty. That narrative won't define the
- 13:19next era for LA Influencer Snark.
- 13:22In the coming weeks, we'll be rolling out changes to reflect
- 13:25who we are and who we want to be.
- 13:27And then about a week later, the mods shared another update.
- 13:31This post was called The Reset. It announced a new look for the
- 13:34subreddit and then there was also a whole list of new rules
- 13:39and posting guidelines. This included rules like we
- 13:42don't shame, we don't label, we don't diagnose, and more which
- 13:45is great like those are really good changes.
- 13:48However, from posts by users talking about the changes, it
- 13:51seems that the users couldn't even use the word snark on the
- 13:54subreddit anymore and people were like this is weird that
- 13:57you're blocking users for using the subreddit for what it is
- 13:59intended for, which is snark. And then other posts by the mods
- 14:03said that the subreddit was opening mod applications for
- 14:06upcoming projects, which included a very interesting list
- 14:10of qualifications. So this post seems to be
- 14:12deleted, but someone did screenshot it and post it in a
- 14:15different stark Reddit. According to the post,
- 14:17applicants had to be between the ages of 20 and 25.
- 14:20That is something that many people found to be very weird
- 14:24because that is like a blatant age discrimination, which is
- 14:27like illegal I think in most countries.
- 14:29Also 20 to 25, I understand that's probably when you are
- 14:32entrenched the most, maybe in like celebrity culture, the most
- 14:35interested in that chronically online culture, but you also
- 14:38don't have a fully formed frontal lobe yet.
- 14:41Another qualification included being willing to participate in
- 14:44podcast style episodes with other mods, and that raised
- 14:49alarm bells for a lot of users. Ultimately, all of these changes
- 14:52LED people to believe that maybe the subreddit was being bought
- 14:54out by someone. A post on the R slash subreddit
- 14:57drama summarized why this started circulating, pointing to
- 15:00the fact that the mod who was posting about all of these
- 15:03changes was only 54 days old. Like their account quote.
- 15:07The new mods Rice milk 99 X account is 54 days old and has
- 15:11no post or common history. No new posts have been approved
- 15:15since Yesterday Starkers took their discussion to the New York
- 15:18counterpart R/NYC Influencer Snark with a post titled LA
- 15:22Influencer Snark Downfall. So there's speculation that the
- 15:25new mod is like an insider of sorts like this.
- 15:28Rice, what is it? I don't say Rice gum.
- 15:31Rice milk. Rice Gum is a streamer.
- 15:34This rice milk person is an insider of sorts, Someone who is
- 15:38like trying to limit the discourse that goes on in the
- 15:40subreddit. According to this post, some
- 15:43users believe it's influencer Lily Chi However, there's also a
- 15:46lot of speculation that it's not Lily Chi.
- 15:49It's actually just like a man who's a fan of Lily Chi who's
- 15:52like obsessed with Lily Chi and that all his posts around her
- 15:57have been deleted. And then one mod alleged mod
- 16:01shared their side of the story on another snark Reddit saying
- 16:04that she had to take a step back from the subreddit for her
- 16:07mental health. It all came to a head when the
- 16:09current mod pulled a manic toddler like meltdown when we
- 16:12tried to bring in new mods, which is when me and the only
- 16:15other mod decided to both step away and give him the sub.
- 16:19We both deleted our accounts and he modded the sub by himself on
- 16:22multiple accounts thereafter. Obviously I can't know for sure,
- 16:25but I'm pretty certain the newest account is just him on
- 16:281/3 account. Towards the end of our modding
- 16:31he had a habit of using alternate accounts to argue with
- 16:33users, so I'm not surprised to read that he's now deleting
- 16:36comments and posts that don't fit his ideology.
- 16:39So obviously if that is true, I guess it explains why this mod
- 16:43Rice milk is only 54 days old. If it's like just this mod who
- 16:48just creates new accounts, that's why the account is so
- 16:50new. Anyway, it doesn't seem like we
- 16:52have an answer yet on what is happening with LA Influencer
- 16:54Snark, but it is clear that users are not happy with the
- 16:57changes. The mods have made some
- 16:59modifications to try and appeal to the user base, and they have
- 17:02since issued a statement reading.
- 17:04We want to thank the community for their feedback over the past
- 17:06day. Conversations have been ongoing
- 17:09and we've been reflecting deeply on the direction of LA
- 17:12Influencer Snark and how our intent has been received.
- 17:15The last few weeks have been very difficult for everyone, and
- 17:17we know many of you have felt unseen, confused, and even
- 17:20frustrated by the recent changes.
- 17:22It's sparked discussion, but our hope now is to move forward with
- 17:25more transparency and mutual trust.
- 17:27The reset was always rooted in a desire to elevate LA Influencer
- 17:31Snark, never for personal or financial gain, which is why
- 17:34we're shelving the LA Influencer Snark podcast and the other side
- 17:39projects for the foreseeable future.
- 17:41We also want to make it unequivocally clear no one on
- 17:43our team has any affiliation with the influencers discussed
- 17:46on this forum. We've never used personal
- 17:48relationship to protect anyone or suppress content, nor were
- 17:52there any plans to monetize the community through sponsorships,
- 17:54partnerships, or merge any narrative that suggests
- 17:57otherwise. It's baseless speculation,
- 17:59period. Let's wipe the slate clean and
- 18:01begin again. This is so fascinating to me.
- 18:04Like drama inter like subreddit drama is so fascinating because
- 18:10the point of this subreddit obviously is to talk about
- 18:14influencer drama and to snark on influencers and when close
- 18:17communities end up turning on each other.
- 18:19Fascinating. I feel like that is tail is all
- 18:21this time on the Internet, but it's so, so interesting.
- 18:24I do think the more mainstream spotlight on snark culture that
- 18:28we've seen just in the last like 12 months has really spun these
- 18:33communities out of control. I talked about it with Tattle
- 18:37Life, but when that whole like lawsuit situation happened and
- 18:40then for weeks after, like the Tattle Life subreddit was just
- 18:44filled with people being like, how do I delete my account?
- 18:46I'm really worried that my identity is going to get exposed
- 18:49XYZ. It seems like from what I can
- 18:51see, it's making people who are like heavily engaged in these
- 18:54communities question if they should be, not that they are
- 18:57justified or not justified in being part of these communities
- 19:01and doing what they're doing. If you are really involved in
- 19:03starking, I imagine it's probably hard to change your
- 19:06mind that what you're doing is like bullying or like not
- 19:08productive. Like I think a lot of people
- 19:10make excuses for themselves to justify their behavior and what
- 19:14they're posting online anonymously.
- 19:16But regardless, I wonder if it's going to have more of a lasting
- 19:20impact on these communities in general and how people interact
- 19:24with snark where they maybe are more cautious.
- 19:27I don't know. Anyways guys, that's it for any
- 19:29scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 19:31Please remember to rate, review, and subscribe.
- 19:33Please buy us a coffee if you want to support us, help keep us
- 19:36going. I love you guys and I will talk
- 19:38to you guys tomorrow for mini and also a deep dive.
- 19:41Bye.
