- 0:00Speaker 1: Chapter twenty four in the Holy of Holies. The subject
- 0:05Speaker 1: of the sanctuary was the key which unlocked the mystery
- 0:08Speaker 1: of the Disappointment of eighteen forty four. It opened to
- 0:12Speaker 1: view a complete system of truth, connected and harmonious, showing
- 0:16Speaker 1: that God's hand had directed the great Advent movement, and
- 0:20Speaker 1: revealing present duty as it brought to light the position
- 0:23Speaker 1: and work of his people. As the Disciples of Jesus,
- 0:27Speaker 1: after the terrible knight of their anguish and disappointment, were
- 0:30Speaker 1: glad when they saw the Lord, so did those now
- 0:33Speaker 1: rejoice who had looked in faith for his second coming.
- 0:37Speaker 1: They had expected him to appear in glory to give
- 0:39Speaker 1: reward to his servants. As their hopes were disappointed, they
- 0:44Speaker 1: had lost sight of Jesus, and with Mary at the sepulcher,
- 0:47Speaker 1: they cried, they have taken away my Lord, and I
- 0:50Speaker 1: know not where they have laid him. Now in the
- 0:53Speaker 1: Holy of Holies they again beheld him, their compassionate High Priest,
- 0:57Speaker 1: soon to appear as their king and delivery. Light from
- 1:01Speaker 1: the sanctuary illumined the past, the present, and the future.
- 1:06Speaker 1: They knew that God had led them by his honoring providence.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Though like the first Disciples they themselves had failed to
- 1:13Speaker 1: understand the message which they bore, Yet it had been
- 1:16Speaker 1: in every respect correct. In proclaiming it, they had fulfilled
- 1:20Speaker 1: the purpose of God, and their labor had not been
- 1:22Speaker 1: in vain. In the Lord begotten again unto a lively hope,
- 1:27Speaker 1: they rejoiced with joy unspeakable and full of glory, both
- 1:32Speaker 1: the prophecy of Danielate fourteen unto two thousand and three
- 1:35Speaker 1: hundred days. Then shall the sanctuary be cleansed and the
- 1:39Speaker 1: first Angel's message. Fear God and give glory to Him,
- 1:42Speaker 1: for the hour of his judgment is come pointed to
- 1:44Speaker 1: Christ's ministration in the most holy place, to the investigative judgment,
- 1:49Speaker 1: and not to the coming of Christ for the redemption
- 1:51Speaker 1: of his people and the destruction of the wicked. The
- 1:55Speaker 1: mistake had not been in the reckoning of the prophetic periods,
- 1:58Speaker 1: but in the event to take place at the end
- 2:00Speaker 1: of the twenty three hundred days. Through this error, the
- 2:04Speaker 1: believers had suffered disappointment. Yet all that was foretold by
- 2:07Speaker 1: the prophecy, and all that they had any scripture warrant
- 2:10Speaker 1: to expect, had been accomplished at the very time when
- 2:14Speaker 1: they were lamenting the failure of their hopes. The event
- 2:17Speaker 1: had taken place which was foretold by the message, and
- 2:20Speaker 1: which must be fulfilled before the Lord could appear to
- 2:23Speaker 1: give reward to his servants. Christ had come not to
- 2:27Speaker 1: the earth as they expected, but as foreshadowed in the type,
- 2:30Speaker 1: to the most holy place of the Temple of God
- 2:33Speaker 1: in heaven. He is represented by the prophet Daniel as
- 2:36Speaker 1: coming at this time to the Ancient of Days. I
- 2:40Speaker 1: saw in the night visions. And behold, one like the
- 2:43Speaker 1: Son of Man came with the clouds of heaven, and
- 2:45Speaker 1: came not to the earth, but to the Ancient of days.
- 2:49Speaker 1: And they brought him near before him. This coming is
- 2:52Speaker 1: foretold also by the prophet Malachi. The Lord whom he
- 2:55Speaker 1: seek shall suddenly come to his temple. Even the messenger
- 2:59Speaker 1: of the Covenant, whom ye delight in, behold, he shall come, Saith,
- 3:02Speaker 1: the Lord of Hosts. The coming of the Lord to
- 3:06Speaker 1: his temple was sudden, unexpected to his people. They were
- 3:10Speaker 1: not looking for him there. They expected him to come
- 3:13Speaker 1: to earth in flaming fire, taking vengeance on them that
- 3:16Speaker 1: know not God and that obey not the Gospel. But
- 3:20Speaker 1: the people were not yet ready to meet their Lord
- 3:22Speaker 1: there was still a work of preparation to be accomplished.
- 3:25Speaker 1: For them. Light was to be given directing their minds
- 3:28Speaker 1: to the Temple of God in heaven, and as they
- 3:31Speaker 1: should by faith follow their high Priest in his ministration. There,
- 3:34Speaker 1: new duties would be revealed. Another message of warning and
- 3:38Speaker 1: instruction was to be given to the church, says the Prophet,
- 3:43Speaker 1: who may abide the day of his coming, and who
- 3:45Speaker 1: shall stand when he appereth, For he is like a
- 3:48Speaker 1: refiner's fire, and like fuller soap, And he shall sit
- 3:52Speaker 1: as a refiner and purifier of silver. And he shall
- 3:55Speaker 1: purify the sons of Levi and purge them as gold
- 3:58Speaker 1: and silver, that they may all offer unto the Lord,
- 4:01Speaker 1: an offering in righteousness. Those who are living upon the earth,
- 4:05Speaker 1: when the intercession of Christ shall cease in the sanctuary above,
- 4:09Speaker 1: are to stand in the sight of a holy God
- 4:11Speaker 1: without a mediator. Their robes must be spotless, their characters
- 4:16Speaker 1: must be purified from sin by the blood of sprinkling,
- 4:20Speaker 1: through the grace of God and their own diligent effort.
- 4:22Speaker 1: They must be conquerors in the battle with evil. While
- 4:26Speaker 1: the investigative judgment is going forward in heaven, while the
- 4:30Speaker 1: sins of penitent believers are being removed from the sanctuary.
- 4:33Speaker 1: There is to be a special work of purification, of
- 4:36Speaker 1: putting away of sin among God's people upon earth. This
- 4:40Speaker 1: work is more clearly presented in the Messages of Revelation fourteen.
- 4:45Speaker 1: When this work shall have been accomplished, the followers of
- 4:48Speaker 1: Christ will be ready for his appearing. Then shall the
- 4:51Speaker 1: offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the Lord,
- 4:54Speaker 1: as in the days of old, and as in former years.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Then the church which our life the Lord at his
- 5:00Speaker 1: coming is to receive to himself, will be a glorious church,
- 5:04Speaker 1: not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing. Then
- 5:08Speaker 1: she will look forth us the morning, fair as the moon,
- 5:11Speaker 1: clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Besides the coming of the Lord to his temple, Malachi
- 5:19Speaker 1: also foretells his second advent, his coming for the execution
- 5:22Speaker 1: of the judgment, in these words, and I will come
- 5:25Speaker 1: near to you to judgment. And I will be a
- 5:28Speaker 1: swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulters, and
- 5:32Speaker 1: against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling
- 5:35Speaker 1: in his wages. The widow and the fatherless, and that
- 5:39Speaker 1: turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not
- 5:42Speaker 1: me saith the Lord of hosts. Jude refers to the
- 5:45Speaker 1: same scene when he says, behold, the Lord cometh with
- 5:49Speaker 1: ten thousands of his saints, to execute judgment upon all,
- 5:53Speaker 1: and to convince all that are ungodly among them of
- 5:55Speaker 1: all their ungodly deeds. This coming and the coming of
- 5:59Speaker 1: the Lord his Temple are distinct and separate events. The
- 6:04Speaker 1: coming of Christ as our High Priest to the most
- 6:06Speaker 1: holy place for the cleansing of the sanctuary brought to
- 6:09Speaker 1: view and Danelate fourteen, the coming of the Son of
- 6:12Speaker 1: Man to the ancient of days as presented in Daniel
- 6:15Speaker 1: seven thirteen, and the coming of the Lord to his
- 6:17Speaker 1: temple foretold by Malachi are descriptions of the same event.
- 6:21Speaker 1: And this is also represented by the coming of the
- 6:24Speaker 1: bridegroom to the marriage described by Christ in the Parable
- 6:27Speaker 1: of the Ten Virgins of Matthew twenty five. In the
- 6:31Speaker 1: summer and autumn of eighteen forty four, the proclamation Behold
- 6:34Speaker 1: the Bridegroom cometh was given. The two classes represented by
- 6:39Speaker 1: the wise and foolish virgins were then developed one class
- 6:43Speaker 1: who looked with joy to the Lord's appearing, and who
- 6:45Speaker 1: had been diligently preparing to meet him. Another class, that
- 6:49Speaker 1: influenced by fear and acting from impulse, had been satisfied
- 6:52Speaker 1: with the theory of the truth, but were destitute of
- 6:55Speaker 1: the grace of God. In the parable, when the bridegroom came,
- 6:59Speaker 1: they that were ready went in with him to the marriage.
- 7:03Speaker 1: The coming of the bridegroom, here brought to view, takes
- 7:06Speaker 1: place before the marriage. The marriage represents the reception by
- 7:11Speaker 1: Christ of his kingdom, the Holy City, the New Jerusalem,
- 7:15Speaker 1: which is the capital and representative of the kingdom, is
- 7:18Speaker 1: called the Bride the Lamb's wife, said the Angel to John,
- 7:22Speaker 1: come hither, I will show thee the bride the Lamb's wife.
- 7:26Speaker 1: He carried me away in the spirits as the prophet,
- 7:28Speaker 1: and showed me that great city, the Holy Jerusalem, descending
- 7:31Speaker 1: out of Heaven from God. Clearly, then the bride represents
- 7:36Speaker 1: the Holy City, and the virgins that go out to
- 7:38Speaker 1: meet the bridegroom are a symbol of the Church. In
- 7:41Speaker 1: the Revelation, the people of God are said to be
- 7:44Speaker 1: the guests at the marriage supper. If guests, they cannot
- 7:48Speaker 1: be represented also as the bride Christ. As stated by
- 7:52Speaker 1: the prophet, Daniel will receive from the Ancient of days
- 7:55Speaker 1: in heaven dominion and glory and a kingdom. He will
- 7:58Speaker 1: receive the New Jerusalem, the capital of his kingdom, prepared
- 8:02Speaker 1: as a bride adorned for her husband. Having received the kingdom,
- 8:07Speaker 1: he will come in his glory as King of kings
- 8:09Speaker 1: and Lord of lords for the redemption of his people.
- 8:12Speaker 1: Who are to sit down with Abraham and Isaac and
- 8:15Speaker 1: Jacob at his table in his kingdom to partake of
- 8:18Speaker 1: the marriage supper of the Lamb. The proclamation Behold the
- 8:22Speaker 1: Bridegroom cometh in the summer of eighteen forty four, left
- 8:26Speaker 1: thousands to expect the immediate advent of the Lord at
- 8:29Speaker 1: the appointed time. The bridegroom came not to the earth,
- 8:33Speaker 1: as the people expected, but to the Ancient of days
- 8:35Speaker 1: in heaven, to the marriage the reception of his kingdom.
- 8:40Speaker 1: They that were ready went in with him to the marriage,
- 8:42Speaker 1: and the door was shut. They were not to be
- 8:45Speaker 1: present in person at the marriage, for it takes place
- 8:48Speaker 1: in heaven while they are upon the earth. The followers
- 8:52Speaker 1: of Christ are to wait for their Lord when he
- 8:53Speaker 1: will return from the wedding, but they are to understand
- 8:57Speaker 1: his work and to follow him by faith as he
- 9:00Speaker 1: goes in before God. It is in this sense that
- 9:03Speaker 1: they are said to go into the marriage. In the parable,
- 9:07Speaker 1: it was those that had oil in their vessels with
- 9:09Speaker 1: their lamps that went into the marriage. Those who, with
- 9:13Speaker 1: the knowledge of the truth from the scriptures, had also
- 9:15Speaker 1: the spirit and grace of God, and who, in the
- 9:18Speaker 1: night of their bitter trial, had patiently waited searching the
- 9:21Speaker 1: Bible for clearer light. These saw the truth concerning the
- 9:25Speaker 1: sanctuary in Heaven and the Saviour's change of ministration, and
- 9:29Speaker 1: by faith they followed him in his work in the
- 9:31Speaker 1: sanctuary above. And all who, through the testimony of the
- 9:35Speaker 1: scriptures except the same truths, following Christ by faith as
- 9:39Speaker 1: he enters in before God to perform the last work
- 9:41Speaker 1: of mediation and at its close to receive his kingdom.
- 9:45Speaker 1: All these are represented as going into the marriage. In
- 9:49Speaker 1: the Parable of Matthew twenty two, the same figure of
- 9:52Speaker 1: the marriage is introduced, and the investigative judgment is clearly
- 9:56Speaker 1: represented as taking place before the marriage, previous to the
- 10:00Speaker 1: the wedding. The king comes in to see the guests
- 10:02Speaker 1: to see if all are attired in the wedding garment,
- 10:05Speaker 1: the spotless robe of character, washed and made white in
- 10:08Speaker 1: the blood of the lamb. He who is found wanting
- 10:11Speaker 1: is cast out. But all who, upon examination, are seen
- 10:15Speaker 1: to have the wedding garment on, are accepted of God
- 10:18Speaker 1: and accounted worthy of a share in His kingdom and
- 10:20Speaker 1: a seat upon his throne. This work of examination of character,
- 10:24Speaker 1: of determining who are prepared for the Kingdom of God,
- 10:28Speaker 1: is that of the investigative judgment, the closing work in
- 10:31Speaker 1: the sanctuary above. When the work of investigation shall be ended,
- 10:36Speaker 1: when the cases of those who in all ages have
- 10:38Speaker 1: professed to be followers of Christ have been examined and decided. Then,
- 10:42Speaker 1: and not till then, probation will close, and the door
- 10:45Speaker 1: of mercy will be shut. Thus, in the one short sentence,
- 10:50Speaker 1: they that were ready went in with him to the marriage,
- 10:52Speaker 1: and the door was shut. We are carried down through
- 10:54Speaker 1: the Saviour's final ministration to the time when the great
- 10:58Speaker 1: work for man's salvation shall be completed in the service
- 11:02Speaker 1: of the earthly sanctuary, which, as we have seen, is
- 11:05Speaker 1: a figure of the service in the heavenly When the
- 11:07Speaker 1: high priest on the day of Atonement entered the most
- 11:10Speaker 1: Holy Place, the ministration in the first apartment ceased. God
- 11:14Speaker 1: commanded there shall be no man in the tabernacle of
- 11:17Speaker 1: the Congregation when he goeth in to make an atonement
- 11:20Speaker 1: in the Holy Place, until he come out. So when
- 11:24Speaker 1: Christ entered the Holy of Holies to perform the closing
- 11:27Speaker 1: work of the Atonement, he ceased his ministration in the
- 11:30Speaker 1: first apartment. But when the ministration in the first apartment ended,
- 11:35Speaker 1: the ministration in the second apartment began. When in the
- 11:39Speaker 1: typical service, the high priest left the Holy on the
- 11:42Speaker 1: day of Atonement, he went in before God to present
- 11:44Speaker 1: the blood of the sin, offering in behalf of all
- 11:47Speaker 1: Israel who truly repented of their sins. So Christ had
- 11:51Speaker 1: only completed one part of his work as our intercessor
- 11:55Speaker 1: to enter upon another portion of the work, and he
- 11:58Speaker 1: still pleaded his blood before the Father in behalf of sinners.
- 12:02Speaker 1: This subject was not understood by Adventists in eighteen forty four,
- 12:07Speaker 1: after the passing of the time when the Savior was expected,
- 12:10Speaker 1: they still believed his coming to be near. They held
- 12:13Speaker 1: that they had reached an important crisis, and that the
- 12:16Speaker 1: work of Christ as man's intercessor before God had ceased.
- 12:20Speaker 1: It appeared to them to be taught in the Bible
- 12:22Speaker 1: that man's probation would close a short time before the
- 12:25Speaker 1: actual coming of the Lord and the clouds of heaven.
- 12:28Speaker 1: This seemed evident from those scriptures which point to a
- 12:31Speaker 1: time when men will seek, knock and cry at the
- 12:33Speaker 1: door of mercy, and it will not be opened. And
- 12:36Speaker 1: it was a question with them whether the date to
- 12:38Speaker 1: which they had looked for the coming of Christ might
- 12:41Speaker 1: not rather mark the beginning of this period, which was
- 12:43Speaker 1: immediately to precede his coming. Having given the warning of
- 12:48Speaker 1: the judgment near, they felt that their work for the
- 12:50Speaker 1: world was done, and they lost their burden of soul
- 12:53Speaker 1: for the salvation of sinners, while the bold and blasphemous
- 12:56Speaker 1: scoffing of the ungodly seemed to them another evidence that
- 12:59Speaker 1: the spirit of God had been withdrawn from the rejectors
- 13:02Speaker 1: of his mercy. All this confirmed them in the belief
- 13:06Speaker 1: that probation had ended, or, as they then expressed it,
- 13:09Speaker 1: the door of mercy was shut. But clearer light came
- 13:13Speaker 1: with the investigation of the sanctuary question. They now saw
- 13:16Speaker 1: that they were correct in believing that the end of
- 13:19Speaker 1: the twenty three hundred days in eighteen forty four marked
- 13:21Speaker 1: an important crisis. But while it was true that that
- 13:25Speaker 1: door of hope and mercy by which men had for
- 13:28Speaker 1: eighteen hundred years found access to God, was closed, another
- 13:32Speaker 1: door was opened, and forgiveness of sins was offered to
- 13:34Speaker 1: men through the intercession of Christ in the most Holy one.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Part of his ministration had closed, only to give place
- 13:42Speaker 1: to another. There was still an open door to the
- 13:45Speaker 1: heavenly sanctuary, where Christ was ministering in the sinner's behalf.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Now was seen the application of those words of Christ
- 13:53Speaker 1: in the Revelation addressed to the Church. At this very time.
- 13:57Speaker 1: These things saith, He that is holy, he that is true, true,
- 14:00Speaker 1: He that hath the key of David, He that openeth,
- 14:03Speaker 1: and no man shutteth, and shutteth, and no man openeth.
- 14:07Speaker 1: I know thy works. Behold, I have set before thee
- 14:10Speaker 1: an open door, and no man can shut it. It
- 14:13Speaker 1: is those who by faith follow Jesus in the great
- 14:16Speaker 1: work of the Atonement who receive the benefits of His
- 14:19Speaker 1: mediation in their behalf, while those who reject the light
- 14:22Speaker 1: which brings to view this work of ministration are not benefited. Thereby,
- 14:27Speaker 1: the Jews, who rejected the light given at Christ's first
- 14:30Speaker 1: Advent and refused to believe on him as the savior
- 14:33Speaker 1: of the world, could not receive pardon through him. When Jesus,
- 14:37Speaker 1: at his ascension, entered by his own blood into the
- 14:39Speaker 1: heavenly sanctuary to shut upon his disciples the blessings of
- 14:43Speaker 1: his mediation, the Jews were left in total darkness to
- 14:47Speaker 1: continue their useless sacrifices and offerings. The ministration of Types
- 14:52Speaker 1: and Shadows had ceased. That door by which men had
- 14:56Speaker 1: formerly found access to God was no longer open. The
- 15:00Speaker 1: Jews had refused to seek Him in the only way
- 15:03Speaker 1: whereby He could then be found through the ministration in
- 15:06Speaker 1: the sanctuary in heaven. Therefore they found no communion with God.
- 15:11Speaker 1: To them, the door was shut. They had no knowledge
- 15:15Speaker 1: of Christ as the true sacrifice and the only mediator
- 15:18Speaker 1: before God. Hence they could not receive the benefits of
- 15:21Speaker 1: his mediation. The condition of the unbelieving Jews illustrates the
- 15:26Speaker 1: condition of the careless and unbelieving among professed Christians who
- 15:30Speaker 1: are willingly ignorant of the work of our merciful High Priest.
- 15:34Speaker 1: In the typical service, when the High priest entered the
- 15:37Speaker 1: most holy place. All Israel were required to gather about
- 15:40Speaker 1: the sanctuary and in the most solemn manner humble their
- 15:44Speaker 1: souls before God, that they might receive the pardon of
- 15:47Speaker 1: their sins and not be cut off from the congregation.
- 15:51Speaker 1: How much more essential in this anti typical day of Atonement,
- 15:54Speaker 1: that we understand the work of our high Priest and
- 15:57Speaker 1: know what duties are required of us. Men cannot, with
- 16:01Speaker 1: impunity reject the warnings which God in mercy sends them.
- 16:06Speaker 1: A message was sent from Heaven to the world in
- 16:08Speaker 1: Noah's day, and their salvation depended upon the manner in
- 16:11Speaker 1: which they treated that message. Because they rejected the warning,
- 16:16Speaker 1: the spirit of God was withdrawn from the sinful race,
- 16:19Speaker 1: and they perished in the waters of the flood. In
- 16:22Speaker 1: the time of Abraham, Mercy ceased to plead with the
- 16:25Speaker 1: guilty inhabitants of Sodom, and all but Lot, with his
- 16:28Speaker 1: wife and two daughters, were consumed by the fire sent
- 16:31Speaker 1: down from Heaven. So in the days of Christ, the
- 16:35Speaker 1: Son of God declared to the unbelieving Jews of that generation,
- 16:39Speaker 1: your house is left unto you, desolate looking down to
- 16:43Speaker 1: the last days. The same infinite power declares concerning those
- 16:46Speaker 1: who received not the love of the Truth, that they
- 16:48Speaker 1: might be saved. For this cause. God shall send them
- 16:52Speaker 1: strong delusion, that they should believe a lie, that they
- 16:55Speaker 1: all might be damned who believe not the truth but
- 16:57Speaker 1: had pleasure in unrighteousness. As they reject the teachings of
- 17:02Speaker 1: His word, God withdraws his spirit and leaves them to
- 17:05Speaker 1: the deceptions which they love. But Christ still intercedes in
- 17:09Speaker 1: man's behalf, and light will be given to those who
- 17:12Speaker 1: seek it. Though this was not at first understood by Adventists,
- 17:16Speaker 1: it was afterward made plain as the scriptures which define
- 17:20Speaker 1: their true position began to open before them. The passing
- 17:24Speaker 1: of the time in eighteen forty four was followed by
- 17:26Speaker 1: a period of great trial to those who still held
- 17:29Speaker 1: the Advent faith. Their only relief, so far as ascertaining
- 17:34Speaker 1: their true position was concerned, was the light which directed
- 17:37Speaker 1: their minds to the sanctuary above. Some renounce their faith
- 17:41Speaker 1: in their former reckoning of the prophetic periods, and ascribed
- 17:45Speaker 1: to human or Satanic agencies the powerful influence of the
- 17:48Speaker 1: Holy Spirit which had attended the Advent movement. Another class
- 17:53Speaker 1: firmly held that the Lord had led them in their
- 17:55Speaker 1: past experience, and as they waited and watched and prayed
- 17:59Speaker 1: to know the will of God, they saw that their
- 18:01Speaker 1: great High Priest had entered upon another work administration, and
- 18:05Speaker 1: following him by faith they were led to see also
- 18:08Speaker 1: the closing work of the Church. They had a clearer
- 18:12Speaker 1: understanding of the First and Second Angel's messages, and were
- 18:15Speaker 1: prepared to receive and give to the world the solemn
- 18:18Speaker 1: warning of the Third Angel of Revelation fourteen end of
- 18:23Speaker 1: Chapter twenty four
