- 0:00With Jim Mora will be with him every week for the Coaches Show, an
- 0:04hour show. We got a live audience here in with us and coach.
- 0:08Just to finish up our thoughts on the d line. You had a lot
- 0:11of injuries last year and the offensive receiver group's defensive line people. You lost
- 0:17a couple offensive linemen. Tell us about the defensive line right now. You've
- 0:20got you mentioned the eleven players. I'm looking at this little chart of mine.
- 0:24I don't have eleven here. Let me see your chart. It doesn't
- 0:27include the guys I tell you you're missing. Okay, you got price Yates,
- 0:32really good player. I mean last year was his first year playing,
- 0:36is very versatile, can play all over the place. You got Daumont and
- 0:39Jilani inside. You know on here, you don't have Sequoia McDuffie or r
- 0:44J. Wilkins, who's a transfer from Illinois. So there's four really good
- 0:49defensive tackles right there, along with a guy named Timothy Passmore who's a freshman
- 0:53last year. That's really come on. You got Eric Watts and you got
- 0:57Carter Hooper out there, and then you know we've got some guys that can
- 1:00rush the passer. I don't know if you guys remember Langston Hardy, who
- 1:03came in here pretty highly acclaimed. His dad played in the NFL for a
- 1:06long time, and he's really coming. He's had two knee surgeries in less
- 1:10than two years, and he stayed healthy through camp and done a really good
- 1:14job. Donovan Mitchell, who has just done not Donovan No, give it
- 1:19to Donovan Branch. God, dang, I'll screw that one up. He
- 1:23understands, he's he's he's studying right now. He's not listening. So number
- 1:26fifty eight really good pass rushing. And then Nate Vorhees, who's another,
- 1:30you know, young guy that's a really good player. So you know,
- 1:34we've got some guys that can do some things up front, and it's nice
- 1:38to have some depth. Eric Watts is you know, probably of that group,
- 1:42the guy that you know has had the most impact and should have the
- 1:46most impact. He's a very skilled guy. He's a six six, two
- 1:48hundred and seventy five pound kid that can run really fast. He'll play in
- 1:51the NFL. So you know, we've got to we've got to find a
- 1:55way to maximize those guys, keep him healthy, keep him fresh. We
- 1:57can get into the you know situation the end of the game where team's thrown,
- 2:00then we can have some guys who can rush the pastor a little bit.
- 2:04You have a new special assistant. Let's let's find out about how John
- 2:07Pagano is his name. He's got a really deep NFL experience on his resume.
- 2:14Will he be helping you on the defensive side? What's the story there?
- 2:17So John Johnny as I call him, Johnny, and I go back
- 2:22to Boulder, Colorado, when we were both kids. I've known him since
- 2:25I was six years old and his dad was a head coach at Fairview High
- 2:29School and my dad was coaching at the University of Colorado, and we used
- 2:31to run around together. You've probably heard the name Pegana. His older brother,
- 2:36Chuck, was the head coach of the Colts, tremendous coach, was
- 2:39a demonsive coordinator in the NFL for a long time. So Johnny and I
- 2:43have known each other our entire lives. When when I was with the New
- 2:46Orleans Saints back in the nineties with my dad, Johnny and I were on
- 2:49the staff together. And then my dad, when he went to Indianapolis,
- 2:53hired Johnny with him, and then Johnny stayed in the league for a long
- 2:55time. Was a demons of coordinator of the San Diego Chargers, has a
- 2:59lot of success. Was the demons of coordinator assistant head coach of the of
- 3:02the Oakland Raiders, had a lot of success. He's been with tremendous coaches
- 3:07his entire career, Vic Fangio being one that's had a tremendous influence on him.
- 3:12You know who's one of the top defensive minds in the NFL right now.
- 3:15So Johnny was out of football this year living in Colorado. Like as
- 3:20said, he's, you know, one of my close friends. And I
- 3:22gave him a call in the spring. I said, you know what,
- 3:24First of all, I tried to hire him at UCLA when I was the
- 3:28head coach. He's the first guy I called and said, you need to
- 3:30come to college football. It's awesome, you know. And I'm say in
- 3:32the league for a while. And then when I got to Yukin, I
- 3:36said, you need to come to Yukon. It's awesome. College football is
- 3:38the greatest. I'm gonna stay in the league for a while. Had him
- 3:40come out this spring and spend about five weeks with us, so he was
- 3:44around our players and he fell in love with our players. Our players fell
- 3:46in love with him. He's a great football Mine was able to convince him
- 3:51to come back this season as a special assistant, and he's he works with
- 3:53all the positions, you know. I mean, he'll going to meet with
- 3:55the offensive line and give them the perspective that a defensive has what they're doing.
- 4:00He'll meet with the running backs, He'll meet with the linebackers, you'll
- 4:02meet with the defensive line, you know, and he's not meeting to talk
- 4:05about what we're doing, but just you know, kind of big picture stuff.
- 4:10And he's a great asset to me right now. You know, there's
- 4:15a there's a lot on my plate, you know, being the head coach
- 4:16and really the acting defensive coordinator, and so having a guy that I'm very
- 4:20familiar with it has so much experience. Being able to just sit down and
- 4:26watch film the two of us that have such a strong background together has been
- 4:30really helpful. So we're it's a great addition. He's a big time addition
- 4:33to our staff. Unfortunately, you know, his son is a college football
- 4:39player, so he's gonna you know, and I'm not going to take him
- 4:42away from his son. So he'll be in and out a little bit.
- 4:44He won't be at every game, you know, but big time addition,
- 4:46let's talk about those two hats you have to wear. Obviously, defensive coordinator,
- 4:51there's game planning a lot of that stuff. Then on game day,
- 4:55obviously when your team's on defense, you're totally in there. And then what
- 4:59happen when the ball goes to the offense. Do you switch hats and become
- 5:02the coach? The head coach? How does that work? Yeah? I
- 5:05do? I have to You know, first of all, I'm blessed with
- 5:09an amazing staff. I mean, you know, from from Nick Charlton as
- 5:13our offensive coordinator and Doug Shear as our special news coordinator. I don't have
- 5:16to worry about those two sides of the football, you know. And on
- 5:19defense, working with Kenny McClinton and Sreaky Debaate, our linebacker coach, and
- 5:24Dalton Hilliard, our defensive back coach. You know, we all worked very
- 5:27well together. So it's easy for me to click over on my headphones,
- 5:31go to offense, plug in with Nick because he needs me there to help
- 5:35him situationally. You know, what are we going to do when we get
- 5:39to fourth down? What you know, what am I thinking about? You
- 5:42know, where we are in the game and how our philosophy needs to adjust
- 5:46or change depending upon what's happening big picture stuff. So you know, Fortunately,
- 5:51I've been doing this for a while, so it's not as hard as
- 5:56maybe it could be if I was new to this. But it's a challenge.
- 5:59But I love that part of it. You know. I don't want
- 6:01to be standing there doing nothing during the game. I mean, I feel
- 6:04like I have a lot to add and I want to. I want to
- 6:06add it. But first and foremost, I can only do that because I'm
- 6:11blessed with a great staff. Well, it all begins a week from tonight,
- 6:15the twenty twenty three season opener. Football Huskies will be hosting the Wolfpack
- 6:19of NC State of the ACC and we're going to talk about that in a
- 6:23second. Local coverage begins at four thirty. We've got Yukon game Day on
- 6:27ninety seven ninety ESPN network coverage begins. It's six the Heart Auto Group countdown
- 6:30to kick off, and it's game on shortly after seven thirty. Here along
- 6:34the Yukon Sports networking online via the iHeart APP and coach night game to start,
- 6:43I gotta go to break. Okay, let's take it wasn't here.
- 6:46What would I do? All right, we'll be back with Jim Mora.
- 6:50This is the Yukon football coaches show on their field.
