- 0:23Now let's get into today's topic.
- 0:27Good evening. I am Louis Edmondson of Hern
- 0:31Eagle Track and Field and today I will be talking about what is
- 0:36your purpose and what is your passion.
- 0:40So the first thing that I want to do is get a little based on
- 0:48what is what is purpose. So we go through and we look at
- 0:51purpose and we say purpose is the reason for which something
- 0:54is done or created or why something exists.
- 0:58So when you go through and you have to talk about purpose, you
- 1:01have to look at things that put you in a standpoint of just
- 1:06exactly why you doing these things.
- 1:08So my purpose came from a particular situation that I was
- 1:12in going through college, a little bit through high school.
- 1:17I had some family members that were very successful in track
- 1:20and it just, you know, little, little fire, but it extremely
- 1:25put a hard damper on me. When I got to college and had a
- 1:29situation that went down, I had I was in a particular wreck that
- 1:33went, you know, that I was in and I had a lot of success
- 1:39before that race. So I had a lot of success that
- 1:43came before that particular situation.
- 1:46So there was a wreck that I was in and the wreck pretty much
- 1:53determined at one point in time if I was ever going to be able
- 1:57to participate in the field of the sport of track and field
- 2:00again. And that was something that I
- 2:02just was not good with. I was mentally destroyed behind
- 2:08it. It brought on some physical
- 2:09situations that destroyed me behind it, that my body just
- 2:13wasn't willing to accept that. My mind was not willing to
- 2:16accept that. But as you know, due to a high
- 2:19power, we don't control those things.
- 2:21You know, we have to give that to God and that that's, you
- 2:24know, that's the path that I decided to take.
- 2:25So with that being said, without getting too far into that,
- 2:29everything worked out like it was supposed to.
- 2:32I was driven to become pretty good, pretty good hurdler,
- 2:37pretty good track and field event guy.
- 2:40And from that day on it, it just, it built a lot of purpose
- 2:45in me. My purpose was to show other
- 2:49people that no matter what goes on through hard work and
- 2:54determination, you can pretty much be anything that you want
- 2:57to be OK. So the, the purpose has to be
- 3:01there for you to be successful in, in anything that you do, not
- 3:07just track and field. That's just what we're talking
- 3:09about, track and field. So the purpose that I give the
- 3:14kids is seeing that through things that I've done,
- 3:18experiences that I've been through and success and, and
- 3:24some other situations where you just, you know, you don't get to
- 3:27success. But that doesn't mean that you
- 3:28you don't get to continue to work hard.
- 3:31You don't get to, you know, take the back seat to and settle to
- 3:35the results. I think I spoke on Twitter last
- 3:40week that, you know, for a lot of the kids that did not make it
- 3:42to the state championship, that does not mean that you know, you
- 3:47are less than. You know, you're still a
- 3:48competitive athlete. You're still one of the best in
- 3:51the state of Texas. You know, it just we didn't
- 3:53reach that brink of success during that year.
- 3:56So the, the purpose for stating that was just to put everything
- 4:00into a spectrum of understanding that a hard working competitive
- 4:03athlete will get the results. But if the results don't turn
- 4:07out like you would like them to have turned out, that doesn't
- 4:11mean that you're any less than. And I think that's a big part of
- 4:16purpose. And we as coaches have to make
- 4:20our kids understand that the, the general purpose for the
- 4:24mission at the at the beginning of the year is OK.
- 4:26So when we say purpose, we set long term goals, short term
- 4:29goals to achieve those, you know, and we put those into, you
- 4:34know, and we, we line them up, you know, and we make sure that
- 4:37everything that we do at the end of the day has a purpose to it.
- 4:41Why are we doing these things? Did we reach our goals?
- 4:44Did we not reach our goals? Did we did we why did we fall
- 4:48short? Why did we overcome, you know,
- 4:51and reach our goal? Like I say, that's just a lot of
- 4:56things that, you know, we, we work on as coaches a lot of the
- 5:02time with when, you know, when we're teaching about the, the,
- 5:07the, the purpose, we have to, we have to put value on things too.
- 5:13And we can't take things for granted.
- 5:16I think that's a big thing that I look at as a, as a coach
- 5:19that's been through a lot of things that I don't take
- 5:23anything for granted because I've had it taken away from me.
- 5:27I've watched it be put on pause and, and I have to understand
- 5:33some things that, you know, life will always life and we will
- 5:40have to deal with it when it comes.
- 5:42So work hard when you have the chance to do those things
- 5:47because I tell my kids all the time, I said there is a, there's
- 5:51a individual right now that will trade places with you with every
- 5:55single problem that you have right now, right now going on.
- 5:58They will trade places with you problems and problems and all
- 6:02right now. So value the things that you are
- 6:06able to do. Value the things that you're
- 6:09able to to to to momentarily do, you know, be successful in the
- 6:14things you do. Push forth effort every single
- 6:16chance that you have the opportunity to do those things
- 6:19because nothing is, you know, nothing is promised for
- 6:24tomorrow. And that's just the world that
- 6:26we live in now. We've seen so many things that
- 6:30that state that and, and hold that to be true.
- 6:35So the, the other thing about purpose is the team purpose that
- 6:40I, I look at when we come together as coaches, when we set
- 6:44forth at the beginning of the year, when you have those
- 6:47meetings, when we go over all the data, when we look at
- 6:50placing the kids in the events, when we have to, you know, come
- 6:56together to get a point total or, you know, you know, we have
- 6:59to put purpose on those things too.
- 7:01You know, we are, we purposely putting our kids in a winning
- 7:05situation or a competitive situation, more or less to say.
- 7:10So we get the best out of the out of the team as well as the
- 7:14coaches. So that's a, that's a lot of
- 7:18things that I think about when I, when I say purpose, you, you
- 7:26look at, you know, you have to look at the dedication of
- 7:28purpose too. Am I dedicated to the things
- 7:31that am I doing or am I just, you know, speaking it or am I
- 7:34just writing these things down and I'm not dedicated to the
- 7:37things that I, I do. The the the purpose will all
- 7:42seem also bring balance to you as a coach and and you know,
- 7:48even as an athlete to men. You know, I have to put myself
- 7:51and balance out. You know, if I'm a student
- 7:54athlete, I got to balance out my education.
- 7:57I have to balance out my athletic, you know, endeavors
- 8:00that I set out for the year. So those things, they go
- 8:03together and with that, because, you know, you become satisfied
- 8:08with the things that go on. You never get complacent, but
- 8:11you become satisfied. When I say satisfied, I mean
- 8:14that I accept the results that came.
- 8:17Yes. Well, I want to oversee the
- 8:19things that I do. Yes, I would love, I'd love to
- 8:21be, you know, a state champion, but I was a regional champion.
- 8:25I may have gotten fit at the state championship, but I gave
- 8:28it my best effort. So I was satisfied and I think I
- 8:32conquered my purpose. When you win a district
- 8:35championship, did we put those people in the right place to be
- 8:38successful? Did we Did we succeed in our
- 8:41goal? You know, when we put those
- 8:43things together and you know, at the beginning of the day, the
- 8:46purpose was set out and the plan was foolproof.
- 8:49And yes, we are. We're satisfied with those
- 8:53results. So the, the next thing that I'll
- 8:57touch on is passion. And this is this is a big part
- 9:01of me. Also, passion is strong and
- 9:05barely controllable emotions. That's that's, that's, that's a
- 9:10strong definition, man. When I when I think about track
- 9:13and field, there's nothing about track and field that doesn't
- 9:15excite me. From every aspect of track and
- 9:18field, I'm very excited about things that go on because you
- 9:22get to see people put forth their best effort in a team
- 9:27effort, but also in an individual action.
- 9:32I have to do my part no matter what it comes to.
- 9:36You know, I lay it all on the line.
- 9:38I'm in my lane, you're in your lane, and we're fighting to the
- 9:42finish. We're running to the finish,
- 9:43we're jumping the fathers, we're jumping the highest, we're
- 9:46throwing the farthest, you know it.
- 9:49And all those things have so much passion, you know, and not
- 9:52to take away from any other sport, but I just feel like, you
- 9:56know, when you look at track and field, you get to see that, that
- 9:59that individual in that moment give you everything he or she
- 10:03has and the results will, you know, they sometimes they, you
- 10:08know, they, we don't get what we want, but at the giving our best
- 10:12is what we ultimately want our kids to do.
- 10:18My, my passion, when I coach, my kids can see it.
- 10:23My family still sees it. It's a, it's a burning desire
- 10:27that that always, you know, will show up.
- 10:30You know, my mind is always on track.
- 10:34You know, when we're in the season, it's, it's constantly
- 10:36thinking. It's constantly my, my coaches
- 10:39call it the little people running in my head, but they
- 10:42know that I'm always trying to put our our kids in a winning
- 10:45situation or like I say, a highly competitive situation.
- 10:50When you have passion, you do the little things that sometimes
- 10:54the coaches don't see. You know, like I tell people all
- 10:58the time we have a heel here in Hearne, TX that that heel never
- 11:01moves. You can run that heel whenever
- 11:04you would like to get better, to get some strength, to get some
- 11:08power, to get some conditioning. Those are the little things that
- 11:11you have to do and that that pushes pride out.
- 11:14That pushes your your passion out.
- 11:16When you see the passion, it means that I'm totally dedicated
- 11:19to the things that I want to do to be successful.
- 11:22A few things that I look at when I, when I look at my passion, it
- 11:27motivates the purpose. You know, the passion is the
- 11:30driven force between our actions, giving us the energy
- 11:34and enthusiasm to persuade our goals.
- 11:37So now I'm pushing forth, you know, now I'm driven, I'm
- 11:40dedicated. I'm, there's nothing that's
- 11:42going to stop me from getting to my goals.
- 11:45You know that those are things that, like I said, when when
- 11:48you're passionate about things that that you're more likely to
- 11:52stay motivated versus people pushing you or coaches pushing
- 11:56you. I tell kids all the time, you
- 11:58know, track is really not a sport that I'm going to beg you
- 12:00to do. You kind of want to have to be
- 12:02out there to get what we get in track and field.
- 12:07Another thing that passion does, it enhances productivity and
- 12:13your success. Passion often leads to increase
- 12:16productivity and success. When we are passionate about our
- 12:19work, we're more likely to be engaged and enjoy what we do.
- 12:23And that's a big part about track and field.
- 12:26You cannot convince a kid to come out there to just run.
- 12:30When you think about football and basketball, a lot of the
- 12:33times when they're running in basketball and football in
- 12:36practice is probably a punishment when this is what we
- 12:39do when we come to practice. So now you're, you know, you're,
- 12:43you're gaining success and you want to come.
- 12:45Now you have some passionate about what you do in workouts,
- 12:48what you do in the track means I tell my guys all the time, we
- 12:51have to win the track meet, the track practice.
- 12:55We have to win the track practice.
- 12:56We can't win, you know, in the, in the track meet if we haven't
- 12:59practiced those things in, in practice to be successful about
- 13:04those things. So we have to do that during
- 13:06practice. Being passionate about things
- 13:09that you do will also get you through, you know, it'll get you
- 13:12through challenges and setbacks, man.
- 13:14It'll give you that non quit factor in you like no matter
- 13:18what goes on, you're still going to be able to fight through it.
- 13:21You're going to be able to get through it.
- 13:23There's going to be, you know, light at the end of the tunnel.
- 13:25You have to stay focused on those things when you're, when
- 13:28you're competing in track and field.
- 13:32You know, with that being said, you know, that's pretty much the
- 13:36conclusion of my of this presentation.
- 13:38It's just to understand that we all go through these, you know,
- 13:44these processes. We all have purpose and we all
- 13:46have passion. And I tell people all the time,
- 13:49your passion and purpose may never match mine or may never be
- 13:53the same, but that doesn't mean it fits.
- 13:55It doesn't fit your kids and what you're going through at
- 13:58your school. And that will change from school
- 14:00to school. And we have to understand that
- 14:02as well. You know, I've been in Rockdale
- 14:05and my passion and purpose was different when I got to Hearn
- 14:08because those are totally different set of kids that go
- 14:11through different things inside and outside of school that we
- 14:13have to push a different aspect on kids.
- 14:17So we have to understand that as well.
- 14:20But with that being said, man, I thank y'all for sitting and
- 14:23listening to this, the spiel on passion.
- 14:28And it's just, you know, it's just something that that sits
- 14:31dearly near and dear to my heart.
- 14:33So purpose and passion will definitely catapult your career.
- 14:39So tap into it if you haven't tapped into it, which I'm sure
- 14:42all you have. I wish you the best, most
- 14:45success to all of y'all. Thank y'all all for listening.
- 14:49I want to give a big shout out to Mike Cunningham for pushing
