- 1:22love this episode, please leave me a review.
- 1:24Now let's dive in to today's episode. I'm 28
- 1:30years old. I'm from a small southern town outside
- 1:33of Raleigh in North Carolina. I grew up on a
- 1:35farm out in the country and we shared the land
- 1:38with my aunt and her family. But now I live on
- 1:41the coast of good old North Cackalacki and I
- 1:44love it. Let me tell ya, I'm such a beach and
- 1:46sunshine girl. If the sun is out, I'm out. My
- 1:50family means everything to me. They're a big
- 1:53part of what makes my world go round. With my
- 1:55cousins living next door and my mom stressing
- 1:58that my siblings are my built -in besties, I'm
- 2:01lucky enough that I actually grew up liking my
- 2:03family. Now, don't get me wrong, we definitely
- 2:05fought. One time, I went two weeks without speaking
- 2:08to my sister. I mean, not a single word. Someone
- 2:10would walk into the room and I would intentionally
- 2:12talk to them. And I won't even look at her. She
- 2:14was non -existent in my mind. And on top of that,
- 2:17we shared a bedroom. But anyways, it did take
- 2:19my mom about those two weeks to notice what I
- 2:21was doing, and that's when things started to
- 2:24change. She reminded me once again, your sister's
- 2:26your built -in best friend for life, wanting
- 2:28to get along and love her. And honestly, to this
- 2:31day, I can't tell you she deserved it, because
- 2:33I don't remember what she did. Anyways. We all
- 2:36grew up pretty close. I mean, we did pretty much
- 2:38everything together from living on the farm together
- 2:41and family vacations, throwing all of our parties
- 2:43together, playing in the woods, and heck, we
- 2:46even went to church together. And people would
- 2:49get us confused. I mean, I wouldn't say we look
- 2:51that much alike, but I guess our families were
- 2:53close enough that people would call me by my
- 2:55cousin's last name. And honestly, it still happens
- 2:58to this day. I just got a wedding invite in the
- 3:01mail last week with their last name attached
- 3:03to my first name. And these people, the wedding
- 3:05people, I just met them like last year. They
- 3:08don't know my cousins. Or at least I don't think
- 3:10they know my cousins. I think North Carolina
- 3:12is a small town. They might actually know my
- 3:15cousins. But hey, I'm not going to correct them
- 3:18on it. It is what it is. Nothing new in my book.
- 3:21I've known Jesus since I was a little girl. My
- 3:24mom says I would dance in her stomach when she
- 3:26was pregnant with me whenever they would sing
- 3:28worship songs or she'd have them playing in the
- 3:30car. I believe I was fortunate and fortunate
- 3:34enough to have been filled with the Holy Spirit
- 3:36from the very beginning. When I was three, I
- 3:38started begging to be baptized and the church
- 3:40leadership kept saying I didn't understand what
- 3:42I was asking and would say no, but I wore them
- 3:45down. By the time I was five years old, me and
- 3:48my little sister both got baptized. My story
- 3:50isn't my family's story. Neither of my parents
- 3:53really grew up Christians. Actually, my mom grew
- 3:55up being anything but. Her mom had been a witch,
- 3:59a Jehovah's Witness. Basically, you name it,
- 4:01she probably became it. My mom became a Christian
- 4:05in her early twenties, and it ended up not just
- 4:07saving her life, but my older brother's life,
- 4:10and then all of ours to follow. My parents are
- 4:12unique people, or at least that's the simple
- 4:14way to say it. What I'm about to tell you will
- 4:17make them sound like the ultimate Christians,
- 4:19but trust me, even though I don't regret the
- 4:22choices they made for our family, it definitely
- 4:23put our lives on a bit of a roller coaster. I
- 4:26grew up with my mom and my aunt. They were the
- 4:28type of people who would pick up a homeless man
- 4:30off the side of the road and bring him home for
- 4:33Thanksgiving. Like no, literally, they did that.
- 4:36I'm pretty sure more than once. My parents took
- 4:39in anyone they deemed safe enough at the time
- 4:41to live with us. We had ex -drug dealers, drug
- 4:44addicts, ex -gang members, and even a young woman
- 4:48who used to do sex work lived with us at one
- 4:50point. I got to spend a lot of my early teens
- 4:53hearing crazy and horrifying stories like about
- 4:55people getting initiated into gangs. I watched
- 4:58people experience withdrawal and kind of went
- 5:01through it with them. While they were quitting
- 5:02drugs, I was quitting gluten. And trust me, for
- 5:06an Italian girl that's actually especially from
- 5:08the south, it's really hard. Between the bread,
- 5:10the pasta, and the fried chicken, it felt impossible.
- 5:13My most traumatic at the time but now favorite
- 5:16story to look back on was when I was 12. I was
- 5:19in my cheerleading uniform, sitting in the passenger
- 5:22seat of my mom's car with the sun coming in through
- 5:24the window on a perfect fall day. And some guy
- 5:28was sitting in the seat behind me telling me
- 5:31how he almost had to kill a man, basically that
- 5:33he pretended to kill a man so that the game he
- 5:36was in wouldn't kill him. I honestly blacked
- 5:39out. I can't even tell you why he got in that
- 5:41situation in the first place. I just remember
- 5:43trying to play it cool and wondering, why the
- 5:45heck is my mom not back in this car? Two, why
- 5:49did she leave me with this random 17 year old
- 5:51scary boy? And three, are we really bringing
- 5:54him home with us? How will I ever explain this
- 5:56to my other homeschooled friends? Because yeah,
- 5:59I was homeschooled. That guy is now a worship
- 6:02leader. One of the strongest Christians I know,
- 6:04happily married, has two kids, and he's like
- 6:07a big brother to me. It's funny how time, life,
- 6:09and Jesus can change you. All those people that
- 6:12lived with us and allowed me to do life with
- 6:14them and learn from their experiences gave me
- 6:17such a different outlook on life than so many
- 6:19of my friends that grew up in church. Church
- 6:22was hard. When I was young, my parents joined
- 6:24what I would call a church -like cult that ended
- 6:26up kicking my older brother out of church. I
- 6:29spent six months not hearing from him. My parents
- 6:31wouldn't speak his name in the house, and the
- 6:33kids at our church would make sly comments and
- 6:36remarks about him. Now, my parents didn't leave
- 6:38him homeless. He went to go live with his dad
- 6:40when he was 14 and I was 9. So you can imagine,
- 6:44it wasn't easy for me to understand as a kid
- 6:47or process it. I was told by the church that
- 6:49he was a bad person and was choosing the world
- 6:52and sin and Satan over Jesus and me. As I got
- 6:55older, I started to see the flaws in the church,
- 6:57but the church also started to point out mine
- 6:59more and more. My mom was told by leadership
- 7:02that I needed to learn to be seen and not heard.
- 7:05So after conversations and many conversations
- 7:07with my parents, I learned. I learned to be quiet.
- 7:11I learned to be agreeable. I learned to not speak
- 7:13unless spoken to. I was silent. Which is so funny
- 7:17because I come from a loud Italian family of
- 7:19very strong women. I mean, we're the type of
- 7:22loud that when people meet me, they think I'm
- 7:24an extrovert. And then they meet my family and
- 7:27they go, oh my gosh, she's an introvert. We're
- 7:29the type of loud that I actually have to go get
- 7:31my glass of wine and go find a small corner to
- 7:34hide in with a book to get a break from the chaos.
- 7:37I love listening to them all talk over each other
- 7:39and debate things, but sometimes an introvert
- 7:42needs a break, you know? Thankfully, we did end
- 7:44up leaving that church and we went to a new one
- 7:47with a lot of the same people from the old one.
- 7:49But it was different. These people were like
- 7:51us, just trying to figure it out. I was 14 when
- 7:54we left that church. and there were no girls
- 7:57my age at my new church so my parents allowed
- 8:00me to visit my grandparents church but the agreement
- 8:02was I had to go to their church as well so yeah
- 8:05that's right two church services back -to -back
- 8:08on Sundays thrilling stuff you can imagine eventually
- 8:12when I could drive they allowed me and my sister
- 8:14to go just to my grandparents church which I
- 8:17would say my healing with the church really began
- 8:20and my relationship with Jesus started to deepen
- 8:22And that's what I want for you. I want you to
- 8:25know you're not alone. Whether it's church hurt
- 8:27or weighed down by the world, I want you to experience
- 8:29what it's like living with Jesus freed. To not
- 8:32compare yourself to other Christians or to worry
- 8:35what others think that maybe you're too Christian
- 8:37-y. I want you to question what you believe and
- 8:39why. Getting the outcome of having a stronger
- 8:42foundation in Christ. I want you to feel comfortable
- 8:44questioning what you've been told and not feel
- 8:47guilt over it. I want you to feel comfortable
- 8:50questioning God and letting Him show you His
- 8:52answers. Because I questioned. When I experienced
- 8:56more church hurt later in life, I decided to
- 8:59go to seminary school. Yes, the place faith goes
- 9:02to die. Because I had to know, why me? Why did
- 9:06God choose me? Do I believe in a God that could
- 9:08love me? I also went to learn how to read the
- 9:10Bible, to find the answers I'm looking for, and
- 9:12to help others. I want you to end each podcast
- 9:16either learning something, growing in something,
- 9:18feeling reassured, spoken to by God, letting
- 9:21go of a chain you maybe didn't know was holding
- 9:23you down, or just feel seen and not alone. God
- 9:26led me to seminary school, but then he also led
- 9:28me to an internship at A21, which is a global
- 9:31non -profit that deals with anti -human trafficking.
- 9:35Thing is though, it wasn't in my small town.
- 9:37It wasn't in the same zip code that I've always
- 9:39lived in. It was all the way in California. But
- 9:41that's a faith trust story for another time.
- 9:44This podcast is here because before I left, my
- 9:47life mentor told me she'd gotten a vision for
- 9:49my life that she wasn't ready to share with me
- 9:51yet. Then at a worship bonfire night, I was prophetically
- 9:54prayed over before I left. Once I got to SoCal,
- 9:57I met a tattoo artist. And y 'all, I did not
- 10:00know this man from Adam. I hadn't even told him
- 10:02why I'd moved to SoCal. Literally, he said in
- 10:06his prayer over me, I see you setting women free
- 10:08from chains. They are slaves, maybe physically
- 10:11or spiritually, but God is going to use you.
- 10:13Then it happened three more times by different
- 10:15people. But the thing about me is I, one, didn't
- 10:20grow up with that type of prophetic prayer and
- 10:23a vision kind of faith. I didn't grow up in that
- 10:26type of Christian way, she says with quotation
- 10:30marks, so I didn't know what to think about it.
- 10:33And two, I spent so much of my life learning
- 10:36to be quiet, to not use my voice, to not speak
- 10:39up, that this was more uncomfortable and terrifying
- 10:42than moving across the country, not just to a
- 10:45city I'd never been to before, but to a whole
- 10:48dang state that I'd never even thought to visit.
- 10:51Thankfully, Jesus walked with me through it all,
- 10:54and He gave me plenty of opportunities and spaces
- 10:57to practice and learn. I've had to rewire my
- 10:59brain and fight the mind trash, self doubts and
- 11:02lies of you're not enough. I've surrendered my
- 11:05fears and insecurities to my good father and
- 11:07will probably continue to have to do that because
- 11:10I'm human but I also recognize it's not something
- 11:13he wanted me to carry and that he never intended
- 11:15it and that's the same for you. Together we're
- 11:19going to practice living freed. Living because
- 11:22of the here and now, the present and the intentional
- 11:24action. Freed? because it's already been accomplished.
- 11:28We just have to choose to treat it as so. We
- 11:31have to choose to live as someone freed and not
- 11:34just wait to feel free. I know it sounds so much
- 11:36easier said than done. You're probably driving
- 11:38in your car, cleaning your house, or doing your
- 11:41makeup and thinking, girl, how do you just choose
- 11:43to live free? What does that even look like?
- 11:46For me, it was learning to be honest, not just
- 11:48with God about my fears, doubts, hurts, or insecurities,
- 11:51but being honest with myself as well. He knew
- 11:54all my mess before I did. He knew I hated public
- 11:56speaking before I did. He knew my trauma before
- 11:59I did. He knew what lies people had spoken into
- 12:02me before I did. He knew the generational curses
- 12:05I was carrying, but I didn't, and I had to learn
- 12:07what those things, what chains I was carrying,
- 12:10what I didn't even know I had. A pastor I listen
- 12:13to sometimes says this, you have to think your
- 12:15thoughts. And Paul says, take every thought captive.
- 12:19He meant it in a different context, but it could
- 12:21still be applied here in with feeling. When you
- 12:23have a thought or feeling that is holding you
- 12:25back or down in any way than what free should
- 12:27feel like, then think it all the way through.
- 12:30That's something I want us to plan to practice
- 12:32this week. Put into practice thinking your thoughts
- 12:35through. But what does that mean? Here are the
- 12:37actions you can take. What is a thought or feeling?
- 12:41Why is it there? Where is it coming from? How
- 12:44do I overcome it? For example, I've been working
- 12:46on getting to know myself better. As I've been
- 12:49going through prompted questions every day, one
- 12:51of the questions made me realize something. The
- 12:54two phrases that I wrote three times in one paragraph
- 12:57was, I don't want people to see me and I'm not
- 12:59enough. Obviously, you hear that and think, yeah,
- 13:03Hannah Liz, you don't want people to see you
- 13:04because you don't feel like you're enough. Well,
- 13:07I didn't get there so quick on my own. I had
- 13:09to then sit there and write out all the areas
- 13:11I didn't feel like I was enough and why I felt
- 13:14that way. I realized the fear was that if people
- 13:17really saw me the way that Jesus does, would
- 13:21they choose me? Would they choose to be my friend?
- 13:24Would they choose to know me? To even say hi
- 13:26to me? What if they saw that I'm not enough in
- 13:28whatever space they thought I should fill and
- 13:30decided they didn't like it? Would I be okay?
- 13:33Would I be able to live with that? Then I thought,
- 13:35if I'm not enough for all those around me, is
- 13:38Jesus enough for me? That's when I realized again,
- 13:41for the hundredth time in my life, I keep trying
- 13:44to live for an audience instead of the audience
- 13:46of one. So I get to let go of the fear of not
- 13:49being enough and practice living free of the
- 13:51fact that being enough isn't something Jesus
- 13:54ever asked me to be and he's all that matters.
- 13:57And that's how you think of thought. Friend,
- 14:00this world is built to hold us down, to tell
- 14:02us who to be or not be, what we can and can't
- 14:05do, what is and isn't forgivable, but that's
- 14:09no way for us to live in Christ. Maybe you need
- 14:11to take some time and get to know yourself to
- 14:13see what chains you have on that you didn't know
- 14:15about. Or maybe you do know what chains you have
- 14:18that you're not free from, but you know you have
- 14:21some work to do. Let me tell ya, you're not alone,
- 14:24but together we can walk into life living freed
- 14:27by Jesus and strengthened by him, but also by
- 14:30each other. So take this week, get to know yourself.
- 14:34Let God get to know you. Show him your fears
- 14:36and your insecurities. Take the time and see
- 14:39what feeling keeps sitting with you, what thought
- 14:42keeps rebounding in your head again and again.
- 14:45Maybe it's an action. Maybe you keep doing the
- 14:47same thing over and over and you don't know why.
- 14:50But think about it. Sit with it. Process it.
- 14:53What is it? Why is it there? Where is it coming
- 14:56from? What actions can you take to overcome it?
- 15:00For me, those actions were writing it out, processing
- 15:04it, and actively working against it. Find Bible
- 15:07verses to speak over it. Ask friends to pray
- 15:10over it. Bring it to God. Ask Him why this is
- 15:14a chain that's holding you down. Why is it weighing
- 15:16you down? How is it keeping you from living freed?
- 15:20Let's close today in prayer. Father, thank you
- 15:24so much for whoever's listening to this. I hope
- 15:27that she feels encouraged. I hope that she feels
- 15:29like she's one step closer to truly knowing you
- 15:32and feeling freed. I ask that you open her heart
- 15:35to you and open her mind to what might be holding
- 15:38her back. Give her wisdom and knowledge as she
- 15:41steps into living freed through you. Have her
- 15:44feel excited. Have her feel joyful, Lord. Have
- 15:47her want to experience what you have in store
- 15:50for her. Open the eyes of the blind. Open the
- 15:53ears of the deaf. Give us that one step of courage.
- 15:57Give us that one nugget of courage that we need
- 16:00to step in and start living as if your son died
- 16:03so we could be freed. And in Jesus name, Amen.
- 16:15All right, that's all I have for you today. Thank
