- 0:44This is the Eat More Carbs podcast.
- 0:51Hello and welcome back. This is the More Carbs podcast.
- 0:53It's Jenna here with Riley. We are both dietitians and we
- 0:56talk every Thursday about sports nutrition for the girlies.
- 0:59On today's episode we are doing our what drives us bananas.
- 1:01So the things that we saw online than the world of nutrition that
- 1:04drove Riley and I bananas. Of course, there are tons of
- 1:07things online that drive us bananas that are not nutrition
- 1:10related. Quick note though, I do have a
- 1:12short Charlie update that I'm so excited to share because it has
- 1:16to do with bananas and this is our Drives Us Bananas episode.
- 1:19Charlie is learning a lot of new words right now and recently she
- 1:22learned the word banana, which I am so proud of.
- 1:27She knows cheese juice and bananas.
- 1:30I don't even know where she got the banana word from because
- 1:33like we haven't really been like saying that word but she comes
- 1:36in every morning and like points out the bananas and is like Nana
- 1:39Nana, Nana Nana. We have a carb girly on our
- 1:41hands. I love it.
- 1:42What a fueling queen you. Go Queen.
- 1:46Definitely not something that's driving us bananas.
- 1:48Is Charlie learning new words and saying banana is fantastic.
- 1:51So I absolutely love that. Thank you for sharing a Charlie
- 1:54update. Before we get into what drives
- 1:56us bananas this week we're going to do our high and low.
- 1:58So sharing the good and maybe the parts of our week we wish it
- 2:00gone a little bit differently. And then at the very end of the
- 2:02episode, we will do our training update.
- 2:03So sharing just a little bit about the running we are doing
- 2:06and the progress we are making towards our running goals.
- 2:08So Riley high and low kick us off.
- 2:10My High is so silly. If you have been listening to
- 2:13other episodes of the More Carves podcast, you might have
- 2:16been following along with like toenail Gate because I am slowly
- 2:20losing toenails. Like we have adjusted the shoes,
- 2:23we have adjusted the socks, but like the mileage right now is
- 2:26just like not good for the toenails.
- 2:28On previous episodes I talked about how I do not know how to
- 2:31manage the toenails because they're again all falling off.
- 2:34And I decided to go get them done because I was like at least
- 2:38like make a couple of them look OK.
- 2:40The girl painted on fake toenails.
- 2:42Like my toenails look like actually like I have a full set
- 2:45of 10 and I am so impressed. If it wasn't like totally taboo
- 2:49to like post my toes online. Like I want to show you because
- 2:51like I am so impressed. I don't know, this is like the
- 2:54silliest tie ever, but like I can actually finally wear a
- 2:57sandal. No, that's a great high,
- 2:58especially when we were dealing with what were you at like
- 3:01toenail count was 3 last time. I had lost three last time in
- 3:05between like this episode and when I shared before I had lost
- 3:07another one. So like I was down to six
- 3:10toenails. I love that.
- 3:11OK, but I have to know, did they paint like?
- 3:13Did they paint like like how did they do this?
- 3:16I know I I wish I could show you because they literally look real
- 3:19but they like painted like where the toenail is supposed to be.
- 3:22Oh. My gosh.
- 3:23And it stays on your foot like. Yeah, I was like 30% tipped.
- 3:27Like you gave me fake toenails. Like here you go.
- 3:29And we're a sandal in the summer, so we're so excited.
- 3:32That is amazing. I love that for you and your
- 3:33toenails. Thank you.
- 3:35Totally a random high, but I just had to share because it's
- 3:37been something that's so exciting for me.
- 3:38I was trying to think about a low and I feel like honestly,
- 3:43there's so many lows that I cannot share on the podcast
- 3:45right now because I think being a business owner and like
- 3:48working in this space is like really challenging.
- 3:51And we talk about like the journey and how challenging it
- 3:55is to like reach your goals with period recovery.
- 3:57And we've also talked a lot about meeting our goals with
- 4:00running. And I just feel like there's so
- 4:01many parallels also like being a dietitian and like being a
- 4:05business owner. So there's just like lots of ups
- 4:07and downs. And I feel like we've been
- 4:09having so many great like UPS lately, but we also have.
- 4:12The Downs business side of it can sometimes be so mentally
- 4:16challenging and I know we talk a lot about it offline and that's
- 4:19why I'm so thankful to be a part of our BSN because we can talk
- 4:22about it and I'm not in a private practice setting where
- 4:24I'm completely alone. I have you and we have a team
- 4:27with us that we can kind of chat about the challenges.
- 4:30You're so right, so many highs. I feel like in private practice
- 4:33the highs are really high but the lows are sometimes really
- 4:35low. Yeah, but it's just like with
- 4:38everything, right? Like it's part of a journey, but
- 4:40then also like having a community and like like you
- 4:42mentioned, like being able to talk to each other or just being
- 4:45able to talk with other people that like know what you're going
- 4:47through. It just can really like help and
- 4:49it's just very supportive. I also just noticed your
- 4:52fingernails and they're that like a beautiful hot pink.
- 4:55So if your toenails look anything like that, 30% tip was
- 4:58definitely warranted. Yeah, my toenails are like, I
- 5:02usually do it myself, but I was like, you know what, I'm just
- 5:04gonna, I'm gonna go and just help me out somebody.
- 5:07Sometimes you need that, yeah. Because then I can wear all
- 5:09black and then I can have a pop of.
- 5:10Color. I love it.
- 5:11How? About you Jenna, How's your week
- 5:13going? I had a high and low that was
- 5:14kind of the same story, but kind of boring, to be thoroughly
- 5:17honest. This morning I got a message
- 5:19from a client that she started her period and I am so, so
- 5:23excited. This client in particular has
- 5:24been working so hard and has experienced a lot of highs and
- 5:27lows and a lot of ups and downs along this journey.
- 5:29Always just gets so excited when a client starts their period.
- 5:33So it's just the best way to start my day.
- 5:34And that's definitely my high is just like celebrating that win
- 5:37with her and knowing that like she, she did it and that's,
- 5:40that's the whole point. So very, very excited for her.
- 5:43I'm gonna still share like my full kind of high and low
- 5:45because I feel like if I share my low without sharing my high,
- 5:48it doesn't really make sense. But I shared a couple episodes
- 5:50ago, similarly to you, Riley, like that I was having some pain
- 5:53with my legs. I different muscles and stuff
- 5:55like that, which is why the marathon didn't really pan out
- 5:58maybe the way that I had wanted it to.
- 6:00And my hamstring is finally starting to feel better.
- 6:03So my low is just that like I have not been able to train or
- 6:07run as much or do the things that I'm used to doing.
- 6:10I needed to like take some time away from running as much,
- 6:14running at the same level that I had been running at and even
- 6:16lifting the same way so that way I could heal and low is that
- 6:20like that's just been really hard and not fun.
- 6:23But the high is like I'm finally starting to see that start to
- 6:25like pay off if that makes sense.
- 6:27So happy. I feel like that hamstring has
- 6:30been like with you for a little bit like that hamstring issue.
- 6:33Yeah, it feels like forever for me, but that's very dramatic and
- 6:36just like period recovery, like it feels like a really tough and
- 6:40long difficult journey for sure. And highs are high, lows are
- 6:43low. That's kind of the the theme I
- 6:45guess this morning. I think injuries can be so
- 6:47challenging because, like you said, there's so many parallels
- 6:50with period recovery. And one of those things is like,
- 6:53you feel like you're doing all the right things sometimes, but
- 6:55you can't speed up the process because you just need a little
- 6:58bit of time. Oh my gosh, that is so true.
- 7:01Time is just so important and such an important factor in
- 7:03recovering period, recovering from injury, all of that for
- 7:07sure. Today we are chatting a little
- 7:08bit about what drives us bananas.
- 7:10What are you seeing online that you absolutely cannot stand?
- 7:13Jenna so much like. Same.
- 7:17So much like I have such a love hate relationship with social
- 7:20media, social has allowed us to connect with you all been
- 7:24allowing us to, you know, start the period recovery program,
- 7:26start this podcast, help so many athletes get their periods back.
- 7:30But sometimes I'm like so blinded, I think to our like
- 7:33positive little corner of the Internet at RBSN.
- 7:36And when I like venture outside of that bubble, I'm just like
- 7:40not ready unfortunately for some of the information that I'm
- 7:42saying. I feel that so strongly.
- 7:45What did you see outside of our lovely corner of the Internet?
- 7:48I have been seeing this a lot lately and I know this is
- 7:51affecting a lot of our girlies in the period recovery program
- 7:54too, but I've been seeing a lot of almost like misinformation
- 7:59online coming from influencers who are claiming to eat healthy
- 8:04but they themselves do not have a period.
- 8:07Oh, I think that this is such a good point to bring up.
- 8:11We talk about this a lot, but like we never know what goes on
- 8:14behind closed doors. So when we see someone that's
- 8:17presenting in air quotes, as in air quotes again, healthy, we
- 8:20automatically assume that that person is having a regular
- 8:25cycle, is exercising at such a high level and is eating all of
- 8:28these foods that support them in a quote UN quote healthy way.
- 8:31But in reality, that person might be struggling with not
- 8:34having a regular menstrual cycle.
- 8:37It just makes it so confusing because if you are on the
- 8:41beginning of your nutritional journey and you're looking for
- 8:43advice online, you might be searching certain hashtags, you
- 8:46might be looking up certain accounts that are promoting
- 8:49healthy eating, right? And this is not a bad thing,
- 8:51right? We want people to be more
- 8:53optimized in their health. We want them to be more
- 8:55efficient. We want you to be fueling
- 8:56properly so that you can maximize your performance as an
- 8:59athlete. But we want you to do it the
- 9:00right way. And I think it's just so hard in
- 9:02the nutrition space because there's so many like conflicting
- 9:06opinions. There's so many, like, papers
- 9:08out there that contradict each other and it's just so hard to
- 9:11navigate. And I think what happens is it's
- 9:13really easy to try to, you know, follow people on social media
- 9:17because it's simplified. And the What I Eat in the Day
- 9:19videos make it really easy to kind of mimic somebody.
- 9:22And then what happens is people fall into these bats, like, not
- 9:25like bad habits, but they fall into like misinformation and
- 9:29they're following plans that are not right for them and not
- 9:31results in period loss. And then they're confused
- 9:34because they started eating healthy with air quotes.
- 9:37Right, exactly. I think this this is a good
- 9:38point to bring up because even though you might be following
- 9:41someone's like exercise plan and then following their what I eat
- 9:44in a day videos on top of that, because you want to achieve a
- 9:47similar look to what that person is showing online.
- 9:50There are so many things I want to go into here.
- 9:52One Instagram, social media is not real life, right?
- 9:55Like we are always choosing the best photo of ourselves editing
- 9:58and the photos of ourselves. So what you're seeing that
- 9:59person present as online isn't necessarily an accurate
- 10:02representation of what they physically look like in person.
- 10:05And then on top of that, if you're following their exercise
- 10:07plan and their what I eat in a day, that's not supporting what
- 10:10you need. Even if we're exercising the
- 10:12same, that does not mean that we need the same amount of fuel.
- 10:15Everybody needs a different amount of fuel based on who you
- 10:18are. And so many factors impact that
- 10:20way beyond the amount of exercise that we are doing.
- 10:23Like so, so many. So we can't just say you're
- 10:25exercising the same as me or I'm exercising the same as you.
- 10:28So therefore I should follow the what I eat in a day.
- 10:30My final point on this specifically is that the what I
- 10:33eat in a days are hardly ever the same day.
- 10:36There are so many times when I see some somebody post to what I
- 10:39eat in a day and there are small clues that show that that's not
- 10:42the same day. And once you start to see a
- 10:44couple of them, you can start to recognize the fact that like
- 10:47maybe this isn't the same day that they're showing.
- 10:49They're not giving an accurate representation of what I eat in
- 10:51a day. They've cherry picked and hand
- 10:53picked the best portions of their breakfast, the best snacks
- 10:57that they had, the best looking meals that they had pieced it
- 11:00together and then are then saying this is what I ate in a
- 11:02day. And it's not false, it's not a
- 11:03lie. They did eat that in a day, but
- 11:05it maybe wasn't the same day that they ate all of those
- 11:08things. And that drives me bananas.
- 11:10But we've talked about the what I eaten a day before.
- 11:12That is a lot of me rambling about what I eat in a day videos
- 11:15and why that drives me bananas, but I feel so strongly about
- 11:18this. I know and I, I feel the same
- 11:20way because it drives me. It drives me bananas, right?
- 11:23And that's why I brought it up today.
- 11:24And I think what even is more challenging about that is like
- 11:28when we think about this as dietitians, right?
- 11:31It's really easy to think about that sometimes.
- 11:33It's just like, so easy to fall into the trap.
- 11:35Even though we all know that there's like, negative side
- 11:38effects of social media, we're still all on it.
- 11:40And we're still kind of like sometimes falling into those
- 11:43traps. And sometimes we have to just
- 11:44like, take a step back and be like, OK, what's actually going
- 11:48on here? And what is the purpose of what
- 11:50they're sharing? Oh, it just irks me.
- 11:53It irks me too and I get so many requests and I know you do too,
- 11:57for posts for like meal ideas, recipe ideas.
- 12:00And I'm so hesitant to ever put those out because every single
- 12:03athlete has different needs. Even if you're the same height
- 12:06as somebody, maybe you play the same position or you're
- 12:08competing for the same like race or game or competition or in the
- 12:12same sport you have different genetic makeups, right?
- 12:15So you're going to have different needs than somebody
- 12:18who might be, on paper, the same exact proportions as you.
- 12:22Yes, Oh my gosh, I want to wear that on a T-shirt.
- 12:25Like I want people to know that even if you are exercising the
- 12:28same, even if you have a similar build to someone else, what you
- 12:31need is still different because you are different genetically
- 12:34and what you need to support your body is different from what
- 12:38that other person needs. Even if surface level it looks
- 12:40the same and you have the same goals, you're different and it's
- 12:43OK to fuel differently. It is, and I think that's
- 12:46something that's really hard about nutrition is it's not
- 12:49black and white like a lot of other areas like in our lives,
- 12:52right? And you know, we think about
- 12:54these workout classes and things like that where everybody does
- 12:56the same workout. But like nutrition doesn't
- 12:59necessarily fall into the same kind of guidelines as that.
- 13:02And I guess I know that the trainers are going to come from
- 13:04me, the strength and conditioning coaches are going
- 13:05to come from me and tell me that that all is individual too.
- 13:08And and it is, but nutrition is so individualized and we cannot
- 13:12reiterate that enough. 100%, even if you look at something
- 13:15like intra run fueling, right, there are general guidelines for
- 13:18the amount of carbohydrates that runners need based on the
- 13:21duration that you are running. But I have runners that I work
- 13:24with that take more than that or less than that because of what
- 13:28they need. And that's impacted by how long
- 13:30that they've been trying intra run fueling.
- 13:32Is it new to them? Is it something they've been
- 13:34practicing for a really long time?
- 13:35What do they need? What did they eat beforehand?
- 13:37When did they eat beforehand? Like all of those things are
- 13:40something that we're taking into account when we're building
- 13:43intra run fueling for a runner. So yes, there are general
- 13:46recommendations that we look at and maybe it's a good starting
- 13:48point if you're not used to intra run fueling.
- 13:51But everybody that I work with, even people who are running the
- 13:54same amount or running a similar time, it's different.
- 13:57It's so different. And then on top of that, they
- 13:59like different things. So one of them is using Nerds
- 14:02gummy clusters and the other is using VPN and the other is using
- 14:04goo. And one person likes to make her
- 14:06own infra run fuel. And like so many different
- 14:08things are impacting what we need and when we need it.
- 14:11And that even boils down to a run that looks really similar.
- 14:15Yes. And you might be breaking up
- 14:17your fueling into 20 grams every 20 minutes versus 30 grams every
- 14:2230 minutes, right? Like even if you're eating the
- 14:24same exact things, it goes even further.
- 14:27So it's just, it's so individualized.
- 14:29And I think people just get so overwhelmed and like confused
- 14:32and frustrated and disheartened because they're trying to follow
- 14:35generic advice, which, like you mentioned, Jenna, like such a
- 14:38great starting point. But to get the results that you
- 14:41want and be optimized and be as efficient as possible, you have
- 14:45to take it to the next level. Exactly.
- 14:47Yeah, that's why when we share recipes online for certain
- 14:50things, I'm not ever sharing serving sizes, never give
- 14:53exactly how much I'm going to consume of that because what I
- 14:56need when it changes on a day-to-day basis and it changes
- 14:59from meal to meal because it's going to change from me to you.
- 15:02And I never want to recommend that because it's a great recipe
- 15:05and a good starting point. But what you might need might be
- 15:07more than what I might need or less than what I might need.
- 15:10And that's OK. It's so individualized it.
- 15:13Is it just drives me bananas that there are people out there
- 15:16who are trying to do the right things and some of this
- 15:19misinformation out there is preventing them from getting to
- 15:21their goals? Yeah, or just making them feel
- 15:23bad about the work that they are doing.
- 15:25We talk about this a lot in period recovery especially, but
- 15:28like recovering your period is a really big goal.
- 15:30So we like to break it down into smaller goals that feel
- 15:32attainable. But the reason that we do that
- 15:34is because we want to celebrate the wins along the way.
- 15:36But when we see things like this online, it can make us feel like
- 15:39we're not making progress or we're making the wrong type of
- 15:41progress. And that can be really
- 15:43disheartening and really hard for someone that does have a big
- 15:46goal like period recovery. It is a big goal and it's
- 15:48something that's a very challenging journey.
- 15:50So it doesn't necessarily like create the best environment for
- 15:53someone who is working through something really, really tough.
- 15:55It is really tough and I think something that we hear from
- 15:57every single one of our clients is they get to a certain point
- 16:01and I think this happens to everybody on their journey where
- 16:03they're just sick of it. Like they're sick of it.
- 16:06They're like, why do I have to do this?
- 16:07Why do I have to keep trying this hard?
- 16:09And like other people just get to do whatever they want and
- 16:11they still have their period or I follow this influencer, she
- 16:14eats half as much as me and she still has her period.
- 16:16Can be really disheartening. I think when you feel like
- 16:18you're trying so hard and then like others aren't.
- 16:20But I think that kind of goes back to your point where like
- 16:22comparison in this journey is one of the hardest things. 1000%
- 16:26and it drives me bananas. For you if you're listening to
- 16:28this podcast and you're feeling that way, like I am right there
- 16:31with you. I know how annoying it is to go
- 16:34online and see these things and how that impacts how you're
- 16:37feeling because none of us are immune to it for sure.
- 16:39Like I wish we were, but it impacts us even if we don't
- 16:42really think it is. That is enough about what drives
- 16:45me bananas. Again, I could keep us here for
- 16:46three hours because obviously I'm very passionate about this,
- 16:49but what have you been saying this week?
- 16:51Like what's driving you bananas, Jenna?
- 16:53Everything 1st I want to give a shout out to all of the people
- 16:56that I work with. The amount of like kind things
- 16:59that people have said to me since I shared about like not
- 17:01meeting my marathon goal just reminds me that like there are
- 17:04good people in this world. So thank you to all of you.
- 17:07I just want to like say that again because like I have been
- 17:09surrounded by all the warm fuzzies online, which is
- 17:12wonderful, but I just kind of want to like bring that in
- 17:15before I start to jump into like all of what drives me bananas.
- 17:18This week I actually saw something that was posted.
- 17:21They took an article that had been done and the caption of
- 17:25their post announcing the article is what drove me
- 17:28bananas. They said every bite of ultra
- 17:31processed food increases chance of early death, major new study
- 17:35says. So that's the headline.
- 17:36I guess I should have said that the headline is what drove me
- 17:38bananas because I think that if you're like me, then you maybe
- 17:42don't always click on the article and read it yourself.
- 17:45You might read the headline. But if I was somebody who didn't
- 17:47have nutrition knowledge and I saw that, that would make me
- 17:50really fearful of every single bite of ultra processed foods
- 17:54that I was going to take from there on out.
- 17:56First of all, like who got to decide what was ultra processed
- 17:58and what was it? Why are these things considered
- 18:01ultra processed and these things not?
- 18:03But we just took something that's like super fearful and
- 18:05then we turned it into like a very attention grabbing headline
- 18:09and fear cells. We know this, we've talked about
- 18:11this before. I get so irritated around fear
- 18:15around food because the last thing that we need to do is
- 18:18create more fear around foods. And of course, like there are
- 18:22certain foods that we want to incorporate, operate for a
- 18:24well-rounded balanced performance plan that supports
- 18:27performance and supports longevity and supports health.
- 18:30But we never need to be fearful of food.
- 18:32We need to be knowledgeable about food, but we don't need to
- 18:35be fearful of it. Two weeks.
- 18:37Ago on our junk food episode, we talked about how food is not
- 18:41classified as good or bad and I think that's something that we
- 18:44really like to do in society because we think our brain
- 18:46thinks in black and white, right?
- 18:47It thinks this is good, this is bad, and food doesn't fall into
- 18:50those categories. With fear around food and with
- 18:53articles like this, it tries to classify food as good or bad and
- 18:57it becomes just, again, really confusing.
- 19:00And I'm, I'm with you. It's driving me bananas too.
- 19:02We can't classify food as good or bad because food doesn't have
- 19:05morality. We've talked about that so many
- 19:07times before nutrition. It's simple, but it's very
- 19:10complicated. We like to make things simple
- 19:13and easy to understand. So by classifying foods as good
- 19:17or bad, we've taken something really complex and we've made it
- 19:20simple and therefore made it harder, if that makes sense.
- 19:23You have a really good way of saying this and I'm definitely
- 19:25trying to paraphrase you, but it's not coming out right.
- 19:27We've made this something that's harder for us.
- 19:29Right. And we have to get back to the
- 19:31basics and really simplify it again, because we've complicated
- 19:34it by attempting to simplify it, I think too.
- 19:36Yes, yes, that's what I'm trying to say.
- 19:38Yes, thank you. We like things to be easy to
- 19:40understand. So by just saying this food is
- 19:42bad or this is food that we shouldn't eat ever or like one
- 19:45bite of this is going to cause something really drastic on the
- 19:48other side of it. Like, that's a big claim.
- 19:50It is a big claim not to go off on a tanger and a great
- 19:52sidetrack. But I think that's why
- 19:53supplements are so big, because we treat supplements like
- 19:56medication. And oftentimes, too, I think we
- 19:58try to lump food into that as well, right?
- 20:00We think, oh, OK, you take a painkiller, you're gonna see
- 20:03less pain. You take creatine, you're gonna
- 20:05gain muscle. Like, MMM, that's not how it
- 20:07works. You eat this food, you're gonna
- 20:09have an early death. Like, that's not how it works
- 20:11either. Like we have to stop doing this.
- 20:13Just like we talked about, there were so many components that
- 20:15impact the fueling that you need.
- 20:17There are so many components of your fueling and of your
- 20:20day-to-day choices outside of fueling that are going to impact
- 20:24your health. We can't boil it down to just
- 20:27one single thing. Your environment, where you
- 20:30live, your access to food, your current habits are also going to
- 20:33impact it. And like a whole list of other
- 20:35things that I didn't mention, like we can't just say it's just
- 20:37ultra processed foods, that's it.
- 20:39That's the problem. Well.
- 20:40Going back to your gel example earlier, a gel I don't know what
- 20:44is classified as an ultra processed food because I didn't
- 20:46read the article, but I'm imagining a gel would be an
- 20:50ultra processed food and I can't imagine in the endurance or
- 20:54running community if the gels got taken away.
- 20:56Oh, pitchforks would be picked up for sure.
- 20:58Or like electrolyte products or you know, I just think about all
- 21:01the foods that we often utilize around like competition, games,
- 21:05training to get in more energy. They're often some of these
- 21:08ultra processed products and a lot of athletes are not actually
- 21:12consuming enough of these types of items and therefore they're
- 21:15in a low energy availability. State it can be so hard to meet
- 21:18your energy needs if you aren't incorporating these foods that
- 21:21maybe someone has labeled as ultra processed or something
- 21:24like that and still meet your energy needs because you are an
- 21:26athlete and we're not saying that you need to eat goo every
- 21:29single you know point in your day.
- 21:31We're not incorporating goo at meals and snack time like no,
- 21:33not at all. That's not what we're saying but
- 21:35like you're also probably not unless you're maybe an ultra
- 21:37runner gonna eat a potato mid run.
- 21:39I don't know it done. I've seen it done the.
- 21:41Girlies might come for you because there's a lot of potato
- 21:44eating out there especially and some of our endurance sports.
- 21:48But you know what? It works for them and I get it.
- 21:50I get it. I don't want to sometimes eat
- 21:51anything sweet after some of my running activities either, so I
- 21:55get it. But it's funny.
- 21:56Yes, it's still a carbohydrate. Yes, it still works to fuel you.
- 21:59So if that works for you, amazing.
- 22:00I love that just you probably won't find me with potatoes mid
- 22:03course. But that goes back to like your
- 22:05earlier point where like it's so different for everybody, like
- 22:07everybody's different, like everybody has different
- 22:10nutritional needs and therefore it needs a different feeling
- 22:13plan look at. You and I and are running.
- 22:14I can do a gel all day long and it's no problem.
- 22:17You look at a gel and yeah, your face just said it all.
- 22:19If you aren't watching the video screen, Riley's face didn't need
- 22:22an explanation. But like Riley doesn't like a
- 22:24gel, but she can do like a gummy bear or a fruit snack or
- 22:28something like that. I will choke on a fruit snack
- 22:30because I am not that coordinated and it will not go
- 22:32well for me. But that's like it's still
- 22:34accomplished what we need it to do.
- 22:36It's just getting there in a different way and that's OK
- 22:39that. Is OK.
- 22:41I think that is the Ted Talk of this episode is everybody's
- 22:45different and it's OK that we are different.
- 22:47I also tell clients this all the time.
- 22:48To you, I'm like, if everybody was the same, it would be so
- 22:50boring. It would be so boring if we were
- 22:52all the same. So we are different and we
- 22:54should be proud of it. I want that on a T-shirt.
- 22:56Speaking of T-shirts, Riley's T-shirt is amazing and I wish
- 22:59everyone could see it. Right now it says periods and
- 23:02PRS RBSN. One of our period recovery
- 23:04clients made it. We love you, but we do not love
- 23:07some of the things that we talked about on today's episode.
- 23:09So thank you for everybody who's listening and kind of like
- 23:12playing along with our Drives Us Bananas episodes because I know
- 23:14we'd get heated and you get to see a little bit of a different
- 23:16side of us. This has been so fun to chat
- 23:18about some of the things online that drive us bananas, but we
- 23:21are going to share a training update.
- 23:22So sharing just a little bit about the training that we are
- 23:24doing. Riley, you have 1/2 marathon
- 23:26this month and then you are running a full marathon this
- 23:30fall. So kind of using this as your
- 23:31prep to establish a baseline for goal pace for your marathon.
- 23:35How is training going right now? E -5 months until the marathon,
- 23:38like almost to this day, which is insane.
- 23:40I'm not mentally ready for this, but I got five months so I'm on
- 23:43week, what is it? Week 9 of my 11 week plan.
- 23:46And last week was my highest load week.
- 23:48So I'm slowly starting to taper. I'm about 27 miles this week, so
- 23:52I wouldn't really call that a taper, but slowly kind of
- 23:55cutting things down. This week is kind of like to be
- 23:58figured out. There's like a local 5K that I
- 24:01actually might race on Saturday instead of doing a long run
- 24:04because I want to to kind of practice maybe some like race
- 24:07day stuff. I know you and I have talked a
- 24:08lot about having to pee, managing feeling timelines and
- 24:12stuff like that in the morning. And I'm obviously using my half
- 24:16to prepare and prep and practice for my full.
- 24:19But I was like, why don't I do something to prepare and
- 24:21practice for my half to be determined.
- 24:23But I think I am going to try to do a 5K this weekend and kind of
- 24:26swap around maybe some speed work that I had earlier this
- 24:29week into a longer run so I can do a 5K on Saturday.
- 24:32I've like not done a 5K for like so long at least it's like race
- 24:35to 5K. Hot take, I think racing a 5K is
- 24:39one of the hardest things. I am not ready.
- 24:41Like I don't, I don't know, like I'm not mentally prepared, I
- 24:44don't think because people go so serious.
- 24:46And like again, like the last time I ran a 5K was like when I
- 24:49was in high school when I was running like a Race for the
- 24:50Cure. And I was like, not this.
- 24:53Racing is such a different environment and setup, and it's
- 24:56such something that you can't necessarily replicate on your
- 24:58own. No you can't.
- 24:59I actually follow somebody online who exclusively does
- 25:02speed workouts as races to help prepare for her bigger races
- 25:07because she's like, I can't mimic that feeling unless it is
- 25:10a race. So she seeks out smaller races
- 25:13like 5 KS and 10 KS and maybe even halves to like help her
- 25:16prepare for racing marathons. And I think that's really cool.
- 25:19Yeah, but you and I have talked about like it's really, really
- 25:21hilly where I live and I haven't been able to like really
- 25:25practice a lot of like race day pacing just because it's not
- 25:28going to be as hilly when I'm doing my races.
- 25:30So I think it would just be good to practice that too.
- 25:32We'll see though. I'm kind of intimidated by a 5K
- 25:34too so we'll see. What about you though?
- 25:35Your hamstrings feeling better? What is training looking like
- 25:37for you? Everything is feeling better,
- 25:39which is so great. I think the important thing also
- 25:42back to the similar to period recovery is that I not jump into
- 25:44things or like take it too fast just because I'm feeling better.
- 25:48So slowly making my way back into running and like allowing
- 25:52myself to go very slowly. Listen to my body as far as like
- 25:55if I start to feel pain, I'm stopping.
- 25:57And that's just kind of where I'm at with running.
- 25:59So still doing a lot more of like cross training and trying
- 26:01new things. I went to Pilates the other day
- 26:03and was the first time I've ever done Pilates on a reformer.
- 26:06So I'm like 6 years behind the trend.
- 26:07I know. But it was a lot of fun and it
- 26:09was great. Did some modifications that way.
- 26:11I wasn't, you know, utilizing my hamstring nearly as much as
- 26:14maybe I otherwise would be, but it was still a great challenge
- 26:16and a fun thing to do. So that's where I'm at.
- 26:18It's just like a lot of listening to what's going on,
- 26:20not planning anything yet because I don't want to put
- 26:23pressure on myself to feel like I need to quote UN quote like
- 26:25heal by a certain time in order to race again.
- 26:27So just taking things day by day.
- 26:29How so were you after you went to Pilates?
- 26:31I feel like I want to be able to walk for like a week.
- 26:33I feel OK. I just like definitely had some
- 26:36soreness in muscles that like it's that feeling of like I
- 26:39didn't even know I had muscles there.
- 26:40It's just using different types of muscle for sure, or in a
- 26:43different way. I'm intimidated by a 5K and a
- 26:45Pilates reformer. That's my list of things I'm
- 26:48intimidated by. Oh my gosh.
