- 0:05UK's Laundry Poverty Welcome to Mark and Pete with a story that
- 0:10sounds funny until it's not. If that sounds funny, until it
- 0:15smells funny. Yes, this is Mark and Pete 2
- 0:19blokes with half an opinion. Now here's our first thought.
- 0:23Clean as a whistle, a washing machine can keep clothes clean
- 0:28and ring them until they no longer hum.
- 0:31With a spinning routine high on hygiene, it blows to the beat of
- 0:35the drum. Well, that might be amusing for
- 0:38most people, but the fact of cost of doing laundry from a
- 0:42university perspective and students is so expensive.
- 0:46The choosing between eating and washing your clothes is a
- 0:49serious problem. Yes, University of York students
- 0:53have said the washing and drying clothes in the university owned
- 0:57by the accommodation costs have gone up to around £5.10 per
- 1:02load. That is a lot of money,
- 1:04especially if you're a student and you've got all these other
- 1:07expenses on your course fees and many other things.
- 1:10Mr. Pete, I know that students can be a little bit messy, and
- 1:15in fact, it's maybe that sometimes prioritising the
- 1:19Student Loans and some of the money that they have could be a
- 1:22problem. But maybe not being able to
- 1:25afford to wash your clothes, that raises a big stink.
- 1:29Yes, indeed it does had a nice pun.
- 1:31But you know, the, The thing is that this is 1 effect of the
- 1:37dire straits that Britain is in due to.
- 1:42I hate to put the blame on our, our government, but you know
- 1:47the, the, the, the policies that have been put in place over the
- 1:50years have meant that we can't afford things.
- 1:53One of the main problems is energy policy and it, and it
- 1:58just costs too much. Now, most, most people will use
- 2:02warm or even hot water as part of the, the cleaning process.
- 2:06Now I know some detergents don't require it, but that's just
- 2:08generally the case. And it'd be it's.
- 2:12And so therefore immediately you're going to have an
- 2:14increasing and an increasing cost to do that.
- 2:17And if you want to get them dried as well, you know, if
- 2:19you're in rented accommodation, you've got no space to dry
- 2:23things at home. You've got to actually pay for a
- 2:24dryer. So you're not talking 5 lbs a
- 2:27load as a student, you're talking 10 lbs a load, you know,
- 2:30in the, you've then got to put it into a tumble dryer.
- 2:32And actually in lots of places it's more than that.
- 2:34That's maybe in especially student laundrettes that you
- 2:38were talking about. I don't know.
- 2:39But it can be far more than that.
- 2:41And you don't always just want to do one load.
- 2:43So, you know, it's getting very expensive.
- 2:45You wouldn't be able to afford it because it all comes down, I
- 2:49believe to energy costs. Because even if you're not
- 2:52talking about the energy of actually heating used to heat up
- 2:55the water and to run the machine, energy costs put up the
- 2:59price of the detergent as well. So by by indirect means.
- 3:05So it is down to a lack of understanding of economy.
- 3:10Our own economy works. It needs cheap energy, it
- 3:14doesn't need allegiance to spurious green energy claims and
- 3:23it it certainly doesn't need kowtowing to some sort of
- 3:26international orders, An idea of which we in Britain are meant to
- 3:33not use the energy resources we have, like by fracking or taking
- 3:37advantage of the oil in the North Sea.
- 3:39We should do those things and what it it's, you know, just to
- 3:45give the Christian angle as well to occasionally on Mark and
- 3:48Pete. We as a society shouldn't have a
- 3:52government that puts in play policies that grinds people down
- 3:56so they can't live with dignity. And Mr. Mark looking at you, you
- 4:01wearing smelly clothes isn't living with dignity.
- 4:05Well, look, I I would just like to point out that my underpants
- 4:08were fresh on three months ago, so.
- 4:10I know what I was talking about, yes.
- 4:13And then you turn to the massive side.
- 4:15You have, you're absolutely right.
- 4:17Is about dignity. Now I've got a suggestion here.
- 4:20I, I, I have to go back that this, this is not a new thing.
- 4:24I remember when I was a student 300 years ago.
- 4:27And the fact of the matter is it was true that even then that it
- 4:31was very expensive. Washing your clothes.
- 4:33You would probably have to wait for a week to two weeks, build
- 4:36it all up and then go to the laundrette.
- 4:40The thing here is, Mr. Pete, do you think that really we should
- 4:46be investing in our students? Why not offer this free?
- 4:50Universities and colleges have many, you know, facilities
- 4:54available. Now I understand that you might
- 4:57have to charge for certain things, whether it be for the
- 5:00pad or whatever, but paying £5.10 a load, that's a lot of
- 5:04money. And what I'm concerned about is
- 5:07when students decide to either wash their clothes or decide to
- 5:10eat, it should be both. Now, what I think should happen
- 5:15is that these things should just be mandatory.
- 5:18They're just, they are there available to students who have
- 5:22qualified, they've worked hard, they've gained their
- 5:24qualifications, or they're about to get their qualifications.
- 5:27They're trying to improve their education in a university degree
- 5:31or a college course or somewhere like that.
- 5:33To me, especially things like, you know, washing your clothes.
- 5:37Those facilities should just be readily available, free.
- 5:40Now, I know it has to be maintained.
- 5:42Maybe you could work on a ticketing system.
- 5:44I mean, so it's not abused. So basically, instead of putting
- 5:47a coin in, you have put in a voucher.
- 5:49And I know that that used to be done in some universes where you
- 5:53were given a quota of tickets or, or coins.
- 5:56And that way that means that you can manage it.
- 5:59So that's the first thing that I say.
- 6:01The second thing is, whatever it is, I would say to the students,
- 6:05never compromise on either. I think that I know that when
- 6:09you're looking at your budgeting, you have to
- 6:12prioritise on your coursework, your materials, etcetera.
- 6:16I know that these things are really tight, but this is tough.
- 6:20As a as a student, you want to still be entertained.
- 6:23You want to go to the cinema, you may want to buy sort of
- 6:26luxury items, prioritise on on these types of things.
- 6:29We can't change the government's policy today, although we wish
- 6:33we could. And if Mark and Pete was running
- 6:35the country, believe me, we would definitely be prioritising
- 6:38on you. But the.
- 6:39Fact is. It's coming.
- 6:40I think that it's coming. But the fact of the matter is
- 6:42that they definitely should not be thinking about either heat or
- 6:47heat or. Wash.
- 6:49Because to me really this just sets up a generation in the
- 6:52wrong way. Do you agree?
- 6:53Yes, you, you make good points for a short term, a short term
- 6:58fix to it. And, and and it is important
- 7:00that we, we don't discourage young people from going through
- 7:05with their university or other training courses in long term.
- 7:10Yeah, it it, it requires a bringing down of, of costs and
- 7:13prices. So there's that two fold
- 7:18approach would be, would be appropriate.
- 7:20But it's not just them, of course.
- 7:21Energy prices and washing clothes costs have gone up for
- 7:25everyone and a, an overall policy to bring down energy
- 7:30prices needs to be done urgently.
- 7:32That's what I would say. I would say yes, but in short
- 7:34term fixes that you suggest, which, yeah, excellent idea.
- 7:38But just overall and long term, we've got to stop doing this.
- 7:43We've got to stop being fooled. We've got to stop being useful
- 7:47idiots to people in other countries and to international
- 7:51conglomerates. We've got to stop having green
- 7:55policy, which puts up the cost of fuel, which including not
- 8:00bringing in our own fuel that we have access to from the North
- 8:05Sea, for example. As I mentioned earlier, we've
- 8:08got it's, it's, it's not just the clean clothes, but that
- 8:12that's, it's, you know, the overall cost of living.
- 8:15But that's where that's where it starts.
- 8:18The lack of integrity, going around with dirty clothes just
- 8:21because of the the your government doesn't care about
- 8:27you. Time to change the government
- 8:29and change policy. Well, I agree.
- 8:31And as many of the students who were interviewed across
- 8:34universities have basically summarised by saying no one
- 8:37wants to go around stinking. Well that's true.
- 8:40But the fact of the matter is, is that some of these things are
- 8:43really basic services that I think should just be there
- 8:47mandatory when you qualify for a course.
- 8:49And so as far as my message to everyone in government and
- 8:53universities, I think it's time to clean up your act.
