- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to A Peak Inside Florida Gator Football. Allie
- 0:03Speaker 1: Peak here. I hope you guys had a relaxing weekend
- 0:07Speaker 1: with Florida on the buy. This video is brought to
- 0:10Speaker 1: you by PrizePix. Don't forget, new users can download the
- 0:12Speaker 1: app and play a $ 5 lineup using our code. It's HMA,
- 0:15Speaker 1: and if you win, you'll get $ 150 in lineups instantly.
- 0:19Speaker 1: So Florida's getting ready to face one of the best
- 0:21Speaker 1: teams in college football this weekend, the third-ranked Georgia Bulldogs,
- 0:24Speaker 1: a team that is 6-1, averaging 43 points per game.
- 0:29Speaker 2: And allowing fewer than 16.
- 0:31Speaker 1: And if Florida wants to pull off another upset like
- 0:33Speaker 1: it did against Texas, the Gators are going to have
- 0:36Speaker 1: to play some of their best football this season. But
- 0:38Speaker 1: there is one area where Florida has been consistently hurting itself, penalties.
- 0:43Speaker 2: And when I say consistently, I am not just talking
- 0:45Speaker 2: about this season.
- 0:46Speaker 1: I am talking about a pattern that stretches back roughly
- 0:50Speaker 1: two decades. I came across a graphic from Gators Analytics
- 0:55Speaker 1: on X that really got my attention. And when you
- 0:58Speaker 1: look at where Florida falls compared to the rest of
- 1:00Speaker 1: the SEC, particularly Georgia, there are some pretty eye-opening numbers.
- 1:05Speaker 1: And it raises a question that I have heard Florida
- 1:07Speaker 1: fans ask for years. Is Florida really this undisciplined? Or
- 1:12Speaker 1: is there a chance the Gators are actually officiated differently
- 1:15Speaker 1: because they're Florida? Now, regardless of which answer you believe,
- 1:19Speaker 1: one thing is certain. If Florida brings its current penalty
- 1:22Speaker 1: tendencies into this Georgia game, the Gators could find themselves
- 1:25Speaker 1: fighting an uphill battle before we even consider what Georgia
- 1:28Speaker 1: does on the football field. So let's start with the
- 1:31Speaker 1: first graphic. Let me see if I can get this
- 1:34Speaker 1: pulled up over here so you guys can check it out.
- 1:37Speaker 1: This tracked accepted penalties above or below the FBS average
- 1:41Speaker 1: from 2006 through October 17th of 2026. As you can see,
- 1:43Speaker 1: Florida is in a category of its own. Over that period,
- 1:51Speaker 1: the Gators accumulated 270 penalties above the national average. The
- 1:56Speaker 1: next closest team is Texas at 122. The next closest,
- 2:01Speaker 1: and these are all SEC teams that I'm comparing it to.
- 2:04Speaker 1: The next closest SEC program is Texas A & M
- 2:07Speaker 1: at 114 and then LSU at 84. Now let's look
- 2:10Speaker 1: at Georgia. The Bulldogs are actually 53 penalties below the
- 2:14Speaker 1: FBS average. That's a difference of 323 penalties relative to
- 2:19Speaker 1: the national average between Florida and Georgia. 323. And I
- 2:23Speaker 1: definitely understand, obviously, that these numbers are cumulative and teams
- 2:27Speaker 1: haven't all played exactly the same number of games.
- 2:29Speaker 2: It's still a massive contrast.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Florida is sitting way above at the top of this graphic,
- 2:35Speaker 1: while Georgia is below the national average. Alabama is even
- 2:38Speaker 1: further below, negative 132. What I find particularly interesting is
- 2:42Speaker 1: that Georgia and Florida have played in the same conference,
- 2:45Speaker 1: they've recruited many of the same players, they face similar
- 2:48Speaker 1: levels of competition, and this is through entirely different eras
- 2:51Speaker 1: of college football, yet the penalty profiles are dramatically different.
- 2:56Speaker 1: And let's look at Florida's line. It's not just one
- 2:58Speaker 1: season dragging the average up. It's a long-term trend that
- 3:01Speaker 1: has continued through different coaching staffs and different generations of
- 3:05Speaker 1: football players. Now, I understand that Georgia has been one
- 3:09Speaker 1: of the most successful programs in college under Kirby Smart.
- 3:12Speaker 1: But does being a successful program automatically mean that you're
- 3:16Speaker 1: committing fewer penalties?
- 3:18Speaker 2: Or could there be another factor involved? We're going to
- 3:20Speaker 2: get into that.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Because when you look and talk about whether Florida's getting
- 3:25Speaker 1: a different whistle, let's look at what these two teams.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Are doing right now. Okay, so through.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Seven games this season, Florida has accumulated 55 penalties for
- 3:36Speaker 1: 522 yards. That's an average of 7.9 penalties and almost
- 3:41Speaker 1: 75 yards per game. Georgia, just 37 penalties for 370 yards.
- 3:46Speaker 1: That's 5.3 penalties and roughly 53 yards per game. So
- 3:50Speaker 1: Florida's averaging about two and a half more penalties and
- 3:53Speaker 1: nearly 22 additional penalty.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Yards every Saturday.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Georgia's tied for the second fewest penalties per game in
- 3:59Speaker 1: the SEC. Florida's the third worst in the conference in
- 4:02Speaker 1: penalties per game and dead last in penalty yards per game.
- 4:06Speaker 1: And keep in mind, Both teams have played seven games.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Georgia's been flagged 18 fewer times than Florida and has
- 4:12Speaker 1: lost fewer than 152 yards to penalties. Now, here's another
- 4:16Speaker 1: interesting comparison. Georgia's opponents have been flagged 46 times this
- 4:21Speaker 1: season compared to 37 against Georgia. Florida's opponents have been
- 4:27Speaker 1: flagged 41 times compared to 55 flags thrown against Florida.
- 4:31Speaker 1: So Georgia has benefited from a positive response penalty count
- 4:35Speaker 1: differential of nine, while Florida is sitting at negative 14. Now,
- 4:39Speaker 1: this doesn't prove that officials are favoring Georgia. Teams earn penalties.
- 4:43Speaker 1: And I can totally get that Georgia is so well
- 4:47Speaker 1: coached and disciplined that they may get less. And different
- 4:50Speaker 1: matchups produce different situations. But this does certainly reinforce how
- 4:55Speaker 1: differently these two programs' games have played out. And here's
- 4:58Speaker 1: why I think this is such an important conversation to
- 5:00Speaker 1: have heading into Saturday. Florida has spent a significant portion
- 5:04Speaker 1: of this season giving opponents penalties, giving opponents help.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Georgia doesn't need your help to beat you.
- 5:14Speaker 1: So, you know, let's talk about what the Bulldogs bring
- 5:18Speaker 1: to this matchup. So I already told you how Georgia
- 5:21Speaker 1: is averaging more than 43 points per game. 43. They're
- 5:26Speaker 1: producing almost 470 yards of offense every Saturday. And on
- 5:29Speaker 1: the defensive side, they're allowing just 15.9 points per game
- 5:33Speaker 1: and about 276 yards of offense. That includes only 91
- 5:37Speaker 1: rushing yards per game. So Florida's already going to have
- 5:39Speaker 1: its hands full moving the football against this defense. Now
- 5:42Speaker 1: imagine the Gators are facing second and four. That's a
- 5:45Speaker 1: manageable down. You can run Jaden Baugh. You can play action.
- 5:48Speaker 2: You have options. But somebody jumps early. Now it's second
- 5:51Speaker 2: and nine. Or imagine.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Philo or Jones makes a beautiful throw on third down.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Florida picks up 20 yards, and then there's a holding
- 5:59Speaker 1: penalty that wipes out the play. Now you're in third
- 6:01Speaker 1: and long against one of the best defenses in college football.
- 6:04Speaker 1: That's exactly how you turn a potential scoring drive into
- 6:07Speaker 1: a punt. And remember, Georgia's allowing just over 90 rushing
- 6:10Speaker 1: yards per game. Florida wants to run the football. That's
- 6:13Speaker 1: part of the identity that it has under Summerall. But
- 6:16Speaker 1: when you're consistently putting your offensive line in situations where
- 6:18Speaker 1: it has to protect on obvious passing downs, you are
- 6:22Speaker 1: making Georgia's job easier. And defensively, the stakes are just
- 6:25Speaker 1: as high. Georgia's converting nearly 54% of its third down
- 6:28Speaker 1: opportunities this season. That's an extraordinarily efficient offense. Now imagine
- 6:33Speaker 1: Florida finally gets Georgia into third and eight. The defense
- 6:36Speaker 1: makes the stop. But somebody gets called for a late
- 6:38Speaker 1: hit or a face mask or an unnecessary roughness penalty.
- 6:41Speaker 1: And then all of a sudden, the Bulldogs have another
- 6:43Speaker 1: set of downs. And instead of getting off the field,
- 6:45Speaker 1: Florida is asking its defense to survive another series against
- 6:48Speaker 1: an offense that averages, again.
- 6:50Speaker 2: 43 points per game.
- 6:52Speaker 1: That's where penalties become more than lost yardage. They become
- 6:55Speaker 1: additional possessions, additional snaps, more fatigue, and more potential points.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Against Georgia, you can't just win the play. You have
- 7:03Speaker 1: to finish the play without giving it back. And I
- 7:06Speaker 1: think that's one of the biggest challenges facing Florida this
- 7:09Speaker 1: upcoming week. Now, here is a second graphic that I
- 7:14Speaker 1: want to show you guys that I think is incredibly
- 7:17Speaker 1: interesting here. And the question is really, is Florida actually
- 7:21Speaker 1: being officiated differently? And again, that's where this graphic is
- 7:24Speaker 1: incredibly fascinating. Gator Analytics compared the penalty rates of six
- 7:28Speaker 1: Florida head coaches during their time at Florida versus their
- 7:32Speaker 1: other head coaching stops. And every single one of them
- 7:35Speaker 1: has a higher penalty rate at Florida. Urban Meyer, Will Muschamp,
- 7:39Speaker 1: Jim McElwain, Dan Mullen, Billy Napier, and John Summerall, all six.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Let's look at a couple examples.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Will Muschamp averaged 1.62 penalties above the national average per
- 7:49Speaker 1: game while coaching at Florida. At his other head coaching stops,
- 7:52Speaker 1: his teams were actually below the average, 0.56 penalties below average.
- 7:58Speaker 1: That is a swing of more than two penalties per game.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Urban Meyer's Florida teams were 1.66 penalties above average per game.
- 8:05Speaker 1: At his other stops, he was 0.37 above. Dan Mullen's
- 8:09Speaker 1: teams were below average in penalties elsewhere, but above average
- 8:12Speaker 1: at Florida average.
- 8:13Speaker 2: And then there's Coach Summerall.
- 8:14Speaker 1: At his previous head coaching stop, Summerall's teams were essentially
- 8:17Speaker 1: right at the national average. At Florida this season, they're
- 8:20Speaker 1: averaging 1.35 penalties per game above the average.
- 8:24Speaker 2: So here's my question.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Did every single one of these coaches suddenly become less
- 8:28Speaker 1: disciplined when they took the Florida job? And here's why
- 8:31Speaker 1: I think the Georgia comparison is so interesting. We're talking
- 8:33Speaker 1: about two of the most recognizable brands in the SEC.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Georgia has established itself as one of the premier programs nationally.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Florida has been through multiple coaching changes. And the Gators
- 8:43Speaker 1: have been trying to get back to that national level
- 8:46Speaker 1: that George was on. Could reputation play a role in
- 8:49Speaker 1: how teams are officiated? Could officials be more likely to
- 8:54Speaker 1: give the benefit of the doubt to a team known
- 8:56Speaker 1: for discipline and success? And could a program with a
- 8:59Speaker 1: reputation for penalties.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Be watched more closely?
- 9:02Speaker 1: I'm not saying that's happening, but I do think it's
- 9:04Speaker 1: worth investigating because referees are human beings and some penalties, holding,
- 9:09Speaker 1: pass interference, unnecessary roughness.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Those require judgment.
- 9:14Speaker 1: The key is whether those judgment calls are being applied consistently.
- 9:18Speaker 1: And these graphs don't tell us that.
- 9:20Speaker 2: We would need to.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Compare penalty types, actual game films, similar play by both teams,
- 9:25Speaker 1: and the actual officiating teams making those calls. But I
- 9:28Speaker 1: do think there's enough here to justify asking the question,
- 9:32Speaker 1: especially when the same trend follows six different coaches through Gainesville.
- 9:39Speaker 2: I just think it's.
- 9:39Speaker 1: So fascinating, and we're going to continue on, but I
- 9:41Speaker 1: wanted to take a short break to tell you guys
- 9:43Speaker 1: that we are now available on audio platforms. You can
- 9:47Speaker 1: find us on Apple Podcasts and on Spotify. I do quick,
- 9:52Speaker 1: immediate reactions after games that go out on audio only
- 9:55Speaker 1: because I'm usually walking out of the stadium or driving
- 9:57Speaker 1: in the car or something like that. So make sure
- 9:59Speaker 1: you're subscribed. over there because you can listen to those
- 10:02Speaker 1: on your way home from the game. You guys have
- 10:04Speaker 1: told me for the last probably year and a half
- 10:06Speaker 1: that you wanted an audio option. So trying to deliver that.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Hope you guys enjoy that and you subscribe over there.
- 10:13Speaker 1: I appreciate you supporting the channel anyway that you listen
- 10:16Speaker 1: to us.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Okay, so here's the other side of this.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Florida can't use a potential officiating issue as an excuse
- 10:22Speaker 1: for sloppy football.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Look at Auburn earlier this season.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Florida committed 16 penalties for 138 yards. 16. That included
- 10:29Speaker 1: three false starts, four holding penalties, and four personal fouls.
- 10:33Speaker 2: There is simply no excuse for that. And then remember
- 10:36Speaker 2: what happened against Texas.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Florida won that game 27-24, but they were still flagged
- 10:40Speaker 1: seven times for 55 yards. Texas was only penalized once
- 10:43Speaker 1: for 15. Florida even committed a false start on a
- 10:46Speaker 1: fourth and one situation near midfield, taking away an opportunity
- 10:49Speaker 1: to pick up a crucial first down.
- 10:51Speaker 2: You can't do that against Georgia.
- 10:53Speaker 1: So if I'm John Summerall, there are three things that
- 10:55Speaker 1: I'm emphasizing this week. First, eliminate the pre-snap penalties. No
- 11:00Speaker 1: false starts, no unnecessary motion, no confusion getting lined up.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Second is offensive line discipline. Georgia's defense is too good
- 11:07Speaker 1: to have big plays wiped away by holds or to
- 11:09Speaker 1: continually put the offense behind the chains. And third, No
- 11:13Speaker 1: unnecessary personal fouls. I love that Summerall wants his players
- 11:16Speaker 1: to be physical. I want Florida to be the more
- 11:19Speaker 1: physical football team on Saturday.
- 11:21Speaker 2: Every Saturday, truly.
- 11:22Speaker 1: But there is a difference between being physical and being reckless.
- 11:25Speaker 1: You can play angry. You can play with an edge.
- 11:27Speaker 1: But you cannot let your emotions put your team in
- 11:30Speaker 1: a hole. And if the Gators believe they might be
- 11:32Speaker 1: getting a tighter whistle than Georgia, that makes discipline even
- 11:36Speaker 1: more important. You have to adjust to how the game
- 11:38Speaker 1: is being called, whether you agree with how it's being
- 11:40Speaker 1: called or not. And here's what I think it comes
- 11:44Speaker 1: down to. I believe Florida's penalty problem is real. The
- 11:47Speaker 1: coaches have to own it. The players have to own it.
- 11:49Speaker 1: And if John Summerall is going to build this program
- 11:51Speaker 1: into a championship contender, discipline.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Has to be a part of that foundation.
- 11:55Speaker 1: But I also don't think we can look at these
- 11:57Speaker 1: historical numbers and simply dismiss them. Florida is 270 penalties
- 12:01Speaker 1: above the FBS average.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Georgia's 53 below.
- 12:04Speaker 1: It's a 323 penalty difference relative to the national benchmark.
- 12:08Speaker 1: And every one of those six Florida coaches examined has
- 12:11Speaker 1: experienced more penalties at Florida than they have anywhere else
- 12:13Speaker 1: in their career. That does deserve a closer look. But
- 12:17Speaker 1: here's what's most important on Saturday. Florida just proved against
- 12:20Speaker 1: Texas that it's capable of beating one of the best
- 12:22Speaker 1: teams in the country. And the Gators have the talent
- 12:25Speaker 1: to compete. They have shown resilience, and they have shown
- 12:27Speaker 1: that they can go on the road and win a
- 12:29Speaker 1: game they're not supposed to win. But if Georgia is
- 12:32Speaker 1: another opportunity, then this team has to prove that it's
- 12:35Speaker 1: growing up. And I think one of the clearest signs
- 12:38Speaker 1: of growth would be seeing Florida play a clean football game.
- 12:42Speaker 1: When you're facing the number three team in the country,
- 12:44Speaker 1: you don't have the luxury of giving away 75 yards
- 12:47Speaker 1: and penalties. You can't afford to have touchdowns called back.
- 12:50Speaker 1: You can't afford to turn a third and short into
- 12:52Speaker 1: third and long. And you certainly can't afford to give
- 12:55Speaker 1: Georgia any additional help. Again, this is an offense averaging
- 13:00Speaker 1: 43 points per game. Florida has to make Georgia earn everything,
- 13:05Speaker 1: every first down, every touchdown, every yard, and that's why
- 13:07Speaker 1: I'm watching the penalties so closely in this game. If
- 13:10Speaker 1: Georgia beats Florida because the Bulldogs are simply better, I
- 13:14Speaker 1: think that's one thing.
- 13:15Speaker 2: But if Florida plays well enough.
- 13:17Speaker 1: To win and loses because it keeps making preventable mistakes,
- 13:20Speaker 1: that would be so much harder to accept. And if
- 13:22Speaker 1: Florida plays a relatively clean game but ends up on
- 13:25Speaker 1: the wrong side of a series of questionable judgment calls,
- 13:28Speaker 1: we're going to be having.
- 13:29Speaker 2: A very different conversation next week. So, you know, I
- 13:32Speaker 2: want to keep that all in mind. And I want
- 13:33Speaker 2: to know what you guys think.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Are the Gators genuinely less disciplined than Georgia? That much
- 13:39Speaker 1: less disciplined than Georgia? Or is there something about Florida's
- 13:42Speaker 1: reputation that could be influencing the way that this program
- 13:45Speaker 1: is officiated? And most importantly, can Florida clean this up
- 13:49Speaker 1: in time to knock off the Bulldogs? Let me know
- 13:52Speaker 1: down in the comments. And guys, don't forget to go
- 13:55Speaker 1: over and give some love to PrizePix. We appreciate them
