Today on Living on the Edge with Chip Ingram.
0:14
Have you ever tried to fix something, but the
0:16
tool that you needed wasn't in the toolbox? It
0:19
just doesn't work, right? Well, the same thing
0:23
is true when it comes to building great relationships.
0:25
There is a specific key required. And if you
0:29
have it, you're in business. If you don't, it's
0:31
probably not going to work very well. If you
0:34
want to learn what it takes to build great relationships,
0:37
stay with me. I'm Dave Drury, and this is Living
0:42
on the Edge. Today, Chip Ingram continues his
0:44
series, Caring Enough to Connect, Building Bridges
0:47
to Those We Love. With a principle he says completely
0:50
changed his own marriage from the inside out.
0:53
You simply can't give away what you don't already
0:56
have. If you don't know deep down in your own
0:59
heart that you are already loved by God, Chip
1:02
says you'll spend your whole life trying to manufacture
1:05
love and acceptance from everyone around you
1:08
instead. Well, now let's get started with today's
1:11
message titled, You Can't Give Away What You
1:14
Don't Possess. I'm talking about basically life
1:18
lessons in terms of building a great family and
1:22
just great friendships. Principles that have
1:23
to do with marriage, parenting, friendships,
1:26
your boss. And so let me do a quick review. Principle
1:30
number one, the biggest lesson I learned was
1:32
it all begins with God. on how to have great
1:41
ones by his intent. The second principle was
1:44
that everyone is desperately insecure. We looked
1:47
at the very beginning of time and Adam and Eve
1:50
and that once sin entered the world, we're all,
1:54
varying degrees, we're just desperately insecure
1:56
people. And so we said the passage was Genesis
1:59
chapter three and then our practice was take
2:02
off your mask. Authenticity builds genuine relational
2:05
intimacy and hypocrisy destroys it. Principle
2:10
number three is everyone behaves in a way that
2:13
makes sense to them. When people act in immature,
2:17
inappropriate, or even have patterns that appear
2:20
absolutely dysfunctional and damaging, they're
2:24
doing it for reasons that at least inside their
2:27
head and from their experience, it makes sense.
2:30
Principle number four, you cannot impart what
2:33
you do not possess. In other words, if you do
2:36
not like you, You will never love others. And
2:43
I don't mean that like pop psychology. I mean
2:45
like Jesus. You know, we say, what's the great
2:49
commandment? Matthew 22, 38 and 39. You shall
2:53
love the Lord your God with all your heart, with
2:55
all your soul, with all your mind, and love your
2:58
neighbor, how? As yourself. Now, if we're desperately
3:02
insecure and I don't like me, It's really hard
3:08
if I don't feel whole, if I don't feel loved,
3:12
it's really hard to give away something I don't
3:16
have. And so most of us, some point in time,
3:20
figure out how to get affirmation. And then by
3:26
God's grace, many of us come to know Jesus. And
3:29
we know intellectually what's happened. We were
3:32
pulled out of the kingdom of darkness and the
3:33
kingdom of God. All of our sins have been forgiven.
3:36
We have a new father. We have a new family. We
3:39
have a new peace. We have a new future. We have
3:41
a certain. Our significance has been established.
3:44
We're the object of God's love. The prayer of
3:47
the upright is his delight. We're loved like
3:49
we will never ever be loved, totally apart from
3:51
our performance. And we're a brand new creature
3:54
in Christ that we live out in this fallen world.
3:56
But see, 2 Corinthians 5 .17 says, if any man
3:59
or if any woman is in Christ, The old things
4:02
pass away. Tense of the verb, they're gone forever.
4:07
Behold, all things become new. Tense of the verb,
4:10
it's a process. Yes, I was in darkness, now I'm
4:13
in light. I was a child of the darkness, now
4:15
I'm a son of the light. Yes, I'm forgiven, I'm
4:18
significant, I'm loved, I have the Holy Spirit,
4:20
I have gifts, I've been sealed, my future, I'm
4:23
the object of God's affection, but it's a process,
4:27
and so when I begin my marriage, some of these,
4:31
Things that I've learned, they stick, don't they?
4:35
It's called the flesh. And so I thought to myself,
4:38
not consciously, let's see. If I want to have
4:43
a good marriage and I want the most important
4:45
person to love me, accept me, and affirm me in
4:49
ways that really matter to me, I'll figure out
4:52
what she wants. And so, okay, a good husband
4:55
is this, this, and this. I'll do that. Oh, I
4:57
guess it's this too. And then I need to do this.
4:59
And so I performed, performed, and worked, and
5:01
worked, and worked, and worked. But an amazing
5:02
thing happened. I was working in the relationship
5:05
to get my wife to love me in ways that I thought
5:08
were significant to me. And it was all built,
5:11
came out of what? Came out of a hole. Came out
5:13
of my need. It came out of manipulating and trying
5:16
to do the right thing, to push the right buttons,
5:19
to get someone to love me. I wasn't loving her
5:22
unconditionally. I was loving her in a way that
5:26
I hoped I'd get love back. The passage is Ephesians
5:30
5, 1 and 2. It says, therefore, be imitators
5:34
of God as beloved children and walk in love just
5:37
as Christ also loved you and gave himself up
5:40
for us as an offering and a sacrifice to God
5:42
as a fragrant aroma. If you open your Bibles
5:45
to this one, you've got to do a little work,
5:46
okay? There's two commands there. But you've
5:50
got to open your Bibles because the therefore
5:52
means something happened in verse 32 and 31 of
5:56
chapter 4. As you turn there, you'll notice that
6:00
the point is you can't impart what you don't
6:04
possess. In other words, if you are not sensing,
6:07
knowing, accepting the love that you already
6:11
have from God, You can't give away love to others.
6:16
You will be forced into some dysfunctional means
6:19
of trying to manipulate, pretend, image cast
6:23
to get people to affirm and to love you. But
6:27
notice it says, therefore, command one, be an
6:31
imitator of God, a mimic. Well, what are you
6:34
supposed to mimic? Look in your Bibles. What's
6:35
verse 32 say? Go ahead, look in your Bibles.
6:39
therefore be kind to one another, right? Tenderhearted,
6:41
forgiving one another, just as God also in Christ
6:45
has forgiven you. Well, what's verse 31? Skip
6:47
up. Therefore, he says, you're this brand new
6:50
person in relationships, do something. Let all
6:52
malice and wrath and anger and slander and all
6:54
these negative attitudes, what's it say? Put
6:57
them away, but instead be kind to one another,
7:00
tenderhearted, forgiving one another. And then
7:03
the verse that we looked at is, therefore be
7:05
a mimic of God. You're to mimic God. Well, what's
7:09
a mimic? A mimic, if one person does this, they
7:11
do that. They do that, they do this. So what
7:14
are we to mimic? We're to mimic to be kind in
7:18
relationships the way God is kind. We're to be
7:20
tenderhearted with people the way God is tenderhearted.
7:23
We're to forgive or release or let people go
7:26
the way God has let us go and forgiven us based
7:29
on Christ's work. And so you have a command that
7:32
says, mimic God. And did you notice the second
7:35
command? It says, walk in love. And then it describes
7:39
what love looks like. This isn't an ooey -gooey
7:41
feeling. How do you love? Just as Christ loved
7:44
us, well, how did he love us? An ooey -gooey
7:46
feeling in his heart? Well, I hope there was
7:48
some of that. But the Bible says the way he loved
7:50
us, he gave himself up for us, a sacrifice, and
7:55
he made his life a sacrifice he gave. He radically
8:00
gave himself whether we responded or not. Now,
8:05
here's what I want you to do. Between mimicking
8:08
God and walking in love, in parenthesis, and
8:11
you could put a circle around it in your Bible,
8:13
what's the little phrase between those? Mimic
8:17
God, how? As a beloved child. Or literally, as
8:23
a dearly loved child. Do you understand what
8:26
the passage is teaching? He's saying, I want
8:29
you to love in this impossible way. Forgive like
8:31
God forgives. Be kind like God forgives. Be compassionate
8:34
like God. And I want you to live this amazing,
8:36
supernatural, sacrificial life toward others.
8:38
But where's the resource? As a dearly loved child,
8:44
you can't give away what you don't possess. My
8:49
experience is the average Christian may intellectually
8:51
know they're loved. The average Christian doesn't
8:54
feel loved. You are significant. You are valuable.
9:00
You are loved by God today apart from anything
9:03
you could ever do as much as you will ever be
9:06
loved. There's nothing you can do to diminish
9:08
his love. There's nothing you can do to get more
9:10
of his love. He loves you. And the basis of the
9:14
Christian life is not, I'm going to read my Bible,
9:15
I'm going to pray, I'm going to go on a mission
9:17
trip, I'll try and be a good Christian, I'll
9:18
try and have really good morals. Now, God, will
9:20
you accept me? Do you love me? No, no, no, no,
9:22
no. Completely opposite. It's you've already
9:25
been forgiven. I love you. I care for you. The
9:28
object of my affection, you are my child now.
9:32
Walk in a manner worthy of who you already are.
9:34
And you don't read your Bible to get brownie
9:36
points. It's because you like being together.
9:39
I mean, I don't go have coffee with my wife and
9:41
say, okay, excuse me, dear, do we have the little
9:44
box? Talked with wife today. Okay, the next little
9:48
box. Oh, help clean up around the house. Now
9:51
do you love me? I do that. Are you ready for
9:56
this? I like her. I just want to be with her.
10:02
She loves and accepts me. The Christian life
10:06
is knowing, believing and feeling that you are
10:11
so loved and accepted that now you can be a giver
10:15
in relationships. And no relationship works if
10:21
ultimately your desire is to get something from
10:24
it. If you pretend to give affection or give
10:27
it, but the string is, I will be affectionate
10:30
if you do this. If you give gifts so that this
10:33
will happen. If you play little games to manipulate
10:36
one another, what happens is as soon as the other
10:38
person isn't coming through, then what happens?
10:41
You're hurt, you're rejected, you're angry. See,
10:44
God's not asking you to be nice to your mate
10:46
or nice to your kids or nice to your parents
10:48
or be a good old Joe out there in the marketplace.
10:51
He's asking you to mimic God. Treat them the
10:55
way Jesus would treat them if he was walking
10:57
around inside your body. And you do need to remember
10:59
he is, right? He dwells in you. How in the world
11:03
can you do that? You can only do it when you
11:06
so accept, know, and believe that you are dearly,
11:10
dearly loved by God. Otherwise, I jot in my notes,
11:16
until I find my significant security and value
11:19
from my relationship with Jesus, Every relationship
11:23
will be a dysfunctional attempt to get love and
11:26
acceptance from others through my performance,
11:28
manipulation, looks, barter or deceit. You're

12:00
back to today's lesson. Can I tell you the greatest
12:03
thing that will ever happen in any of your relationships
12:05
is for you to really believe not just with the
12:10
head, but from the heart, that you are so loved
12:14
by God that you are now secure enough to risk
12:18
loving and caring and giving, even if it doesn't
12:22
come back. And so here's the practice. Loving
12:25
others demand I learn to know, accept, and feel
12:28
God's unconditional love for me. You need to
12:31
know, accept, and feel God's unconditional love
12:36
for me. And if you feel like you're a little
12:38
behind on this, I was probably a Christian at
12:40
least 10 years and a pastor before I realized
12:44
how much of my energy and my service to God was
12:47
really about trying to gain his approval and
12:50
people's approval rather than living out of being
12:53
already loved. Let me give you some specific
12:56
ways to go to work on this. The first one is,
12:59
how do you know? Knowledge is an intellectual
13:01
issue. Jot down, if you would, Romans 5 .8. Romans
13:05
5 .8 says, while you were yet a sinner, Christ
13:09
demonstrated his love for you and that he died
13:12
for you. So, I mean, before you even join the
13:16
family and those people who choose not to join
13:18
the family, those people who God loves them,
13:20
they won't receive the benefits of that love
13:23
because of their pride and their unwillingness
13:26
to surrender to his love. But isn't it good to
13:30
remember to know God loves you apart from your
13:33
performance? Now, it doesn't mean your performance
13:35
isn't important because that's the way I express
13:39
my love to him, but you can't earn it. Well,
13:42
then how do you accept God's love? How do you
13:45
get where, just being the regular old normal
13:48
people that we all are, how do you get where
13:50
you begin to know and accept that you really
13:54
are loved so you don't have to manipulate and
13:57
perform and do all this stuff that, by the way,
13:59
we will all do to some degree until we die, right?
14:04
Well, first of all, I think jot down, if you
14:06
would, in your notes, Psalm 139. Here's what
14:10
God thinks of you. You are fearfully and wonderfully
14:15
made. God doesn't compare you to the person on
14:19
the front of Cosmo or people. God doesn't compare
14:22
you to someone on the front of Fortune 500. You
14:25
are fearfully and wonderfully made. The all -knowing,
14:29
all -powerful, all -wise God of all the universe,
14:33
and we're just this one little tiny part of it,
14:34
created you. And he loves just what he made.
14:40
Like we say, oh, that's a Rembrandt. What a great
14:42
work of art God says. He made you and then he
14:45
steps back and goes, you want to see greatness?
14:48
There it is. Try looking in the mirror this week.
14:51
I'm fearfully and wonderfully made. I look exactly
14:55
how God wanted me to look. God's standard of
14:58
beauty and value and significance is the only
15:00
one that matters. Tell you what, you begin to...
15:04
renew your mind. I started writing these things
15:06
on cards and that verse, Psalm 139, I began to
15:09
pray them back to God. Until you like you, you
15:14
can't love other people. And by like, I don't
15:16
mean that you're content with, you know, behavior
15:18
or issues that you know are ungodly. I mean where
15:21
you say, you know something? I have these strengths
15:24
and I have these weaknesses and this is the package
15:27
that God made. And the strengths are to build
15:30
confidence and a part of God's glory. And the
15:32
weaknesses are so that I'm always dependent on
15:34
other people and realize that I can't make this
15:37
little world by myself. I can never make it without
15:39
others. The second way I think you get a grasp
15:42
of how loved you are is by the price or your
15:46
value to God. I mean, if we lined up, can you
15:49
imagine? What if we lined up everyone on this
15:51
back wall, every single person, and then we brought
15:54
in a multi, multi -billionaire, and we said you
15:56
can only Choose one person and you have to pay
15:59
$1 billion for this one person. And when you
16:03
pay that, you can have them and they're yours.
16:06
And what if he looked and looked and looked and
16:08
did research and did all kind of things and looked
16:11
at everything that everyone in this whole room
16:12
brought and then he said, you, $1 billion for
16:15
you. Or he said, you. Or he said, you. And then
16:18
all of us are here and he writes out a check
16:20
for $1 billion and you step out. Would you not
16:24
feel pretty good about yourself? Huh? Jot down,
16:29
would you, 1 Corinthians 6, 19 and 20. God didn't
16:34
pay a billion dollars for you. Do you not know
16:37
that you are not your own? That you have been
16:42
purchased with a price. Jesus, all knowing, all
16:48
powerful, looking down all the corridors of all
16:51
time and eternity, said, when your name comes
16:55
up on the computer screen, of the eternal Godhead,
16:58
I'll pay the blood of my son for the person sitting
17:03
in your seat. That's how much you matter. See,
17:07
part of us, we just need to begin to grasp how
17:11
valuable we are because of who made us and how
17:15
valuable we are because we've been purchased.
17:18
And then I think we need to practically not just
17:20
know, not just accept. But my journey has been,
17:24
how do you feel? How do you get that from here
17:27
to here? And as I read Scripture, for the last
17:32
30 years, I took this little book on the character
17:35
of God, and there's lots of chapters. It's a
17:38
book on God's character, the knowledge of the
17:40
holy bitoser. But I've read the goodness of God
17:43
probably 10 times more, and on the love of God
17:46
10 times more than any chapter in this book for
17:48
30 years. In some stages for a decade at a time,
17:51
I read at least a chapter a week or more. And
17:54
then I would write on a card a little quote and
17:57
a passage. And the only way I could learn to
18:00
get it from my head to my heart was to take that
18:03
truth and pray it to God and ask him to make
18:06
real in my heart what is true and help me to
18:09
feel it. And then I learned from scripture from
18:11
David that if I would sing that and share that
18:14
with God and rejoice over it, I would begin to
18:17
emotionally experience it. What if you said to
18:20
yourself as your eyes open in the morning, you
18:23
could hear the Lord saying, Zephaniah 3 .17,
18:26
I am the Lord your God. I am with you. I will
18:32
protect you and cover you with my love. I rejoice
18:36
over you with singing. What if God wasn't down
18:39
on you? What if he really likes you? What if
18:42
he has a great plan for you? And what if you
18:45
are so significant and valuable already that
18:48
what other people think matters, but it doesn't
18:52
dictate who you are? You see, you can't impart
18:56
what you don't possess. And as you listen to
19:00
the Apostle Paul building the church, what did
19:02
he pray? Chapter one, I pray that the eyes of
19:05
their heart might be enlightened, that they might
19:07
grasp or understand the strength of your power,
19:10
the power of Christ's resurrection dwelling in
19:13
them. And then chapter three says, I bow my knee
19:15
with all the family of God that you might be
19:18
strengthened in your inner man so you could comprehend
19:20
beyond. Just intellectual aspects. What is the
19:23
height and depth and length and breadth? And
19:26
to know, and the word is by way of experience,
19:28
God's love for you. Having been deeply rooted
19:32
and grounded in faith. See, I'll tell you what.
19:36
Relationships begin with really understanding,
19:38
hey, it's all about God's way of doing it. Accepting
19:42
yourself and one another. We're all a bunch of
19:45
desperately insecure people. That people really
19:48
do behave in ways that make sense to them, but
19:50
not usually to us. And that I just can't give
19:53
away what I don't have. And maybe the greatest
19:55
thing I could do for every relationship is to
19:58
know, accept, and believe. And to feel that I
20:03
am loved for who I am apart from any performance
20:05
today by the eternal God of the universe. And
20:10
then kind of take the pressure off of... trying
20:12
to impress you all as much I try to impress you
20:14
and try and look or do different things that
20:17
get your affirmation and just kind of say, you
20:20
know, Lord, you know, if they like you today,
20:22
they kind of hate you tomorrow. That was the
20:24
way with you, right? You know, they're cheering
20:26
one day, crucifying you three days later. There
20:29
was something to the heart of Christ who said
20:31
he didn't entrust himself to people. We're all
20:34
a bunch of fallen human beings, but you're valuable.
20:38
And he wants you to be a giver. And he, loves
20:42
you just the way you are. You're listening to
20:47
Living on the Edge with a message titled, You
20:50
Can't Give Away What You Don't Possess. If you
20:53
ever miss one of these daily messages, We're
20:59
in a series called Caring Enough to Connect,
21:01
building bridges to those we love. And if you'd
21:04
like to catch anything you missed, including
21:06
Chip's special interview with Aaron Pierce, subscribe
21:09
to the Living on the Edge podcast. Real love
21:13
only flows out of people who already know deep
21:15
down that they're loved by God. And that's just
21:18
as true for the hardest relationship in your
21:21
life as it is for the easiest one. If there's
21:24
someone in your own life who feels far from God
21:26
right now, don't let today be the end of it.
21:29
Aaron Pierce's book, Not Beyond Reach, picks
21:32
up right where his recent interview with Chip
21:34
left off, walking you step by step from friendship
21:37
to real spiritual conversation to the gospel
21:40
itself, so you know exactly what to say and when
21:43
to say it. So get your copy of the book, Not

22:21
3007, Sewanee, Georgia 30024. Well, now here's
22:27
Chip Ingram. As we close today's program, I would
22:30
just bring your mind back to those prayers that
22:34
I quoted by the Apostle Paul. Isn't it interesting?
22:38
These people living in such a difficult time
22:40
and in a difficult place, that what he prays
22:43
for them is that they would be able to grasp,
22:46
that they would understand, not just with their
22:48
mind, but with their heart. In fact, he prays
22:50
that beyond their human comprehension, that we
22:55
would understand and grasp and feel and experience
22:58
the love of God. Could I just ask you to just
23:02
lean back and think of how you would think differently
23:05
and relate differently if you could hear in your
23:09
heart God saying, hey, today, I'm with you no
23:13
matter what. Hey, I'm not down on you. I love
23:17
you. I'm for you. What if you believe just even,
23:21
as you and I are talking right now, that, you
23:23
know, today is a part of an amazing and a great
23:27
plan that God has for my life. And he literally
23:30
loves me and just wants me to kind of have my
23:33
spiritual antenna up and listen to him and take
23:36
the next step that he shows me so he could give
23:39
me the very, very best in life. You see, when
23:43
you begin to internalize how lavishly God loves
23:46
you, only then can you begin to pass it on. I
23:50
can't imitate unconditional kindness and love
23:53
and forgiveness unless I've experienced that.
23:56
And so what we're really talking about here is
23:58
you saying to the Lord, Lord, will you help me
24:03
grasp and understand how much you love me? And
24:06
then, you know, it's not just some ooey -gooey
24:08
feeling. It's getting into the scriptures. It's
24:12
trusting the promise that draw near to God and
24:15
he'll draw near to you. It's arranging your life
24:19
where you actually experience God's love. Because
24:23
there are some relationships that are always
24:25
going to be hard, and you cannot give away what
24:28
you don't possess. Unconditional love and forgiveness
24:33
for some people in your life, I call them hard
24:37
relationships, can only be achieved when you
24:40
receive that same love. That's Chip Ingram and
24:44
the end of today's program. Join us next time
24:46
as we continue our series, Caring Enough to Connect,
24:49
here on Living on the Edge. Today's program is
24:56
produced and sponsored by Living on the Edge.
