- 0:02Speaker 1: Life Audio. The Bible Study Podcast, Episode 993. Today, the
- 0:08Speaker 1: Bible Study Podcast continues the study of the book of
- 0:11Speaker 1: Exodus with Chapter 36. Welcome to the Bible Study Podcast.
- 0:23Speaker 1: I'm your host, Chris Christensen. We're going to continue on
- 0:26Speaker 1: with Chapter 36, which is going to talk about the
- 0:28Speaker 1: building of the tabernacle. But first, a word from this sponsor.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Exodus 36, so Bezalel, Oholiab, and every skilled person to
- 0:39Speaker 1: whom the Lord had given skill and ability to know
- 0:41Speaker 1: how to carry out the work of constructing the sanctuary
- 0:44Speaker 1: are to do the work just as the Lord has commanded.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Then Moses summoned Bezalel and Oholiab and every skilled person
- 0:52Speaker 1: to whom the Lord had given ability and who was
- 0:54Speaker 1: willing to come and do the work. They received from
- 0:57Speaker 1: Moses all the offerings the Israelites had brought to carry
- 1:00Speaker 1: out the work of constructing the sanctuary. And the people
- 1:03Speaker 1: continued to bring freewill offerings morning after morning. So all
- 1:07Speaker 1: the skilled workers who were doing all the work on
- 1:09Speaker 1: the sanctuary left what they were doing and said to Moses,
- 1:12Speaker 1: the people are bringing more than enough for doing the
- 1:15Speaker 1: work the Lord commanded to be done. Then Moses gave
- 1:18Speaker 1: an order and they sent this word throughout the camp.
- 1:21Speaker 1: No man or woman is to make anything else as
- 1:23Speaker 1: an offering for the sanctuary. And so the people were
- 1:26Speaker 1: restrained from bringing more because they already had more than
- 1:30Speaker 1: enough to do all the work. I assume that many
- 1:34Speaker 1: of you would love if your next stewardship opportunity at
- 1:38Speaker 1: your church, you had to do this announcement with it,
- 1:41Speaker 1: just stop, stop giving. We've got enough. We don't need
- 1:46Speaker 1: any more. That is often not where we find ourselves.
- 1:50Speaker 1: And yet this is where the people of Israel found
- 1:53Speaker 1: themselves with this work. They're about to start the construction
- 1:56Speaker 1: of all these things that Moses has been up on
- 1:58Speaker 1: the mountain twice getting instructions for. And the outpouring of
- 2:04Speaker 1: the offering is more than enough. And isn't that a
- 2:08Speaker 1: good way to start? And we're going to do this
- 2:11Speaker 1: at a pretty fast clip because we've already had all
- 2:14Speaker 1: the instructions of how to build these pieces, so it's
- 2:18Speaker 1: not a lot new in this next section. The tabernacle.
- 2:22Speaker 1: All those who were skilled among the workers made the
- 2:24Speaker 1: tabernacle with ten curtains of finely twisted linen and blue, purple,
- 2:29Speaker 1: and scarlet yarn with cherubim woven into them by expert hands.
- 2:34Speaker 1: All the curtains were the same size, 28 cubits long
- 2:38Speaker 1: and four cubits wide. They joined five of the curtains
- 2:41Speaker 1: together and did the same with the other five. Then
- 2:45Speaker 1: they made loops of blue material along the edge of
- 2:48Speaker 1: the end curtain in one set and the same was
- 2:51Speaker 1: done with the end curtain in the other set. They
- 2:54Speaker 1: also made 50 loops on one curtain and 50 loops
- 2:57Speaker 1: on on the end curtain of the other set with
- 3:00Speaker 1: the loops opposite each other. Then they made 50 gold
- 3:03Speaker 1: clasps and used them to fasten the two sets of
- 3:06Speaker 1: curtains together so that the tabernacle was a unit. They
- 3:10Speaker 1: made curtains of goat hair for the tent over the tabernacle,
- 3:14Speaker 1: 11 all together. All 11 curtains were the same size,
- 3:17Speaker 1: 30 cubits long and 4 cubits wide. They joined five
- 3:21Speaker 1: of the curtains in one set and the other six
- 3:23Speaker 1: into another set. Then they made 50 loops along the
- 3:27Speaker 1: edge of the end curtain in one set, and also
- 3:30Speaker 1: along the edge of the end curtain in the other set.
- 3:33Speaker 1: They made 50 bronze clasps to fasten the tent together
- 3:38Speaker 1: as a unit. Then they made for the tent a
- 3:40Speaker 1: covering of ram skins dyed red, and over that a
- 3:44Speaker 1: covering of the other durable leather. They made upright frames
- 3:49Speaker 1: of acacia wood for the tabernacle, Each frame was 10
- 3:53Speaker 1: cubits long and a cubit and a half wide, with
- 3:56Speaker 1: two projections set parallel to each other. They made all
- 3:58Speaker 1: the frames of the tabernacle in this way. They made
- 4:01Speaker 1: 20 frames for the south end of the tabernacle and
- 4:04Speaker 1: made 40 silver bases to go under them, two bases
- 4:08Speaker 1: for each frame, one under each projection. For the other side,
- 4:13Speaker 1: the north side of the tabernacle, they made 20 frames
- 4:16Speaker 1: and 40 silver bases, two under each frame. They made
- 4:19Speaker 1: six frames for the far end, that is, the west
- 4:22Speaker 1: end of the tabernacle, and two frames were made for
- 4:25Speaker 1: the corners of the tabernacle at the far end. At
- 4:28Speaker 1: these two corners, the frames were doubled from the bottom
- 4:32Speaker 1: all the way to the top and fitted into a
- 4:33Speaker 1: single ring. Both were made alike, so there were eight
- 4:37Speaker 1: frames and 16 bases, two under each frame. They also
- 4:41Speaker 1: made crossbars of acacia wood, five for the frames on
- 4:45Speaker 1: one side of the tabernacle, five for those on the
- 4:47Speaker 1: other side, and five for the frames on the west
- 4:50Speaker 1: at the far end of the tabernacle. They made the
- 4:53Speaker 1: center crossbar so that it extended from end to end
- 4:56Speaker 1: at the middle of the frames. They overlaid the frames
- 4:58Speaker 1: with gold and made gold rings to hold the crossbars.
- 5:02Speaker 1: They also overlaid the crossbars with gold. They made the
- 5:05Speaker 1: curtain of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn and finely twisted linen,
- 5:10Speaker 1: with cherubim woven into it by a skilled worker. They
- 5:13Speaker 1: made four posts of acacia wood for it and overlaid
- 5:15Speaker 1: them with gold. They made gold hooks for them... and
- 5:18Speaker 1: cast their four silver bases. For the entrance to the tent,
- 5:22Speaker 1: they made a curtain of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn,
- 5:24Speaker 1: and finely twisted linen, the work of an embroiderer, and
- 5:28Speaker 1: they made five posts with hooks for them. They overlaid
- 5:30Speaker 1: the tops of the posts and their bands with gold,
- 5:33Speaker 1: and made their five bases of bronze. I would encourage
- 5:37Speaker 1: you to look online for what a picture is of
- 5:41Speaker 1: what we're building here, or if you've ever had a
- 5:45Speaker 1: chance to be in a nomad camp, If you've had
- 5:48Speaker 1: a chance, for instance, to be in Wadi Rum, if
- 5:50Speaker 1: you had a chance to be there in Jordan and
- 5:53Speaker 1: sleep in a nomad camp, this kind of reminds me
- 5:55Speaker 1: of that where the walls of the compound were fabric.
- 6:02Speaker 1: And they had poles up every once in a while,
- 6:04Speaker 1: so they're going to have that sort of outer ring
- 6:06Speaker 1: of fabric and then the inner tent of the sanctuary.
- 6:09Speaker 1: And it's not that dissimilar, except for all the gold,
- 6:13Speaker 1: for the way the nomad camps were built for generations.
- 6:16Speaker 1: except in this case, it's going to be their church,
- 6:20Speaker 1: their temple, their tabernacle. I'm going to continue on here
- 6:24Speaker 1: because this is not the most interesting part of the book,
- 6:27Speaker 1: and we're going to make some other things here. The Ark.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Bazalel made the Ark of Acacia Wood, two and a
- 6:33Speaker 1: half cubits long, a cubit and a half wide, and
- 6:36Speaker 1: a cubit and a half high. He overlaid it with
- 6:39Speaker 1: pure gold, both inside and out, and made gold molding
- 6:41Speaker 1: around it. He cast four rings for it and fastened
- 6:44Speaker 1: them to its four feet, with two rings on one
- 6:47Speaker 1: side and two rings on the other. Then he made
- 6:50Speaker 1: poles of acacia wood and overlaid them with gold. And
- 6:53Speaker 1: he inserted the poles into the rings on the sides
- 6:55Speaker 1: of the ark to carry it. He made the atonement
- 6:58Speaker 1: cover of pure gold, two and a half cubits long
- 7:01Speaker 1: and a cubit and a half wide. Then he made
- 7:03Speaker 1: two cherubim out of hammered gold at the ends of
- 7:05Speaker 1: the cover. He made one cherub on one end and
- 7:08Speaker 1: the second cherub on the other. And at the two ends,
- 7:12Speaker 1: he made them of one piece with the cover. The
- 7:15Speaker 1: cherubim had their wings spread upward, overshadowing the cover with them.
- 7:19Speaker 1: The cherubim faced each other, looking toward the cover. You've
- 7:24Speaker 1: probably seen a picture of these two cherubs on top
- 7:27Speaker 1: of this box that is the Ark. Not to be
- 7:30Speaker 1: confused with the Ark of Noah. This is the Ark
- 7:32Speaker 1: of the Covenant. And you have these poles because you
- 7:35Speaker 1: remember you're not supposed to touch the Ark. In fact,
- 7:37Speaker 1: someone will die later on in the Book of Kings
- 7:41Speaker 1: because as they're moving the Ark, it starts to fall,
- 7:44Speaker 1: and so he reaches up to touch the Ark and
- 7:47Speaker 1: to steady it and dies. And so you have these
- 7:50Speaker 1: pulls so you don't have to touch the Ark. Don't
- 7:53Speaker 1: touch the Ark. The table. They made the table of
- 7:56Speaker 1: acacia wood two cubits long, a cubit wide, and a
- 7:58Speaker 1: cubit and a half high. Then they overlaid it with
- 8:01Speaker 1: pure gold and made a gold molding around it. They
- 8:04Speaker 1: also made around it a rim a hand breadth wide
- 8:09Speaker 1: and put a gold molding on the rim. They cast
- 8:11Speaker 1: four gold rings for the table and fastened them to
- 8:14Speaker 1: the four corners where the four legs were. The rings
- 8:17Speaker 1: were put close to the rim to hold the poles
- 8:19Speaker 1: used to carry the table. The poles for carrying the
- 8:22Speaker 1: table were made of acacia wood and were overlaid with gold.
- 8:25Speaker 1: And they made from pure gold the articles for the table,
- 8:28Speaker 1: its plates and dishes and bowls and its pitchers for
- 8:31Speaker 1: the pouring out of drink offerings. The lampstand. They made
- 8:35Speaker 1: the lampstand of pure gold. They hammered out its base
- 8:38Speaker 1: and shaft and made its flower-like cups, buds and blossoms
- 8:42Speaker 1: of one piece with them. Six branches extended from the
- 8:45Speaker 1: side of the lampstand, three on one side and three
- 8:48Speaker 1: on the other. Three cups shaped like an almond, flowers
- 8:51Speaker 1: with buds and blossoms were on one branch, three on
- 8:54Speaker 1: the next branch, and all the same for all six
- 8:57Speaker 1: branches extending from the lampstand. And on the lampstand were
- 9:01Speaker 1: four cups shaped like almond flowers, with buds and blossoms.
- 9:04Speaker 1: One bud was under the first pair of branches extending
- 9:07Speaker 1: from the lampstand, a second bud under the second pair,
- 9:10Speaker 1: and a third bud under the third pair, six branches
- 9:13Speaker 1: in all. The buds and the branches were all placed
- 9:16Speaker 1: of one piece with the lampstand, hammered out of pure gold.
- 9:21Speaker 1: They made its seven lamps, as well as its wick, trimmers,
- 9:24Speaker 1: and trays of pure gold. They made the lampstand with
- 9:27Speaker 1: all its accessories from one talent of pure gold. So, Remember, again,
- 9:32Speaker 1: we've got cubits and talents here. A cubit is roughly
- 9:36Speaker 1: the length from your fingertips to your elbow, about a
- 9:39Speaker 1: foot and a half. And then in terms of a
- 9:42Speaker 1: talent of gold, that is a weight of gold, about
- 9:46Speaker 1: 75 pounds or 34 kilograms, or rather a lot of gold.
- 9:52Speaker 1: The altar of incense. They made the altar of incense
- 9:54Speaker 1: out of acacia wood. It was square, a cubit long,
- 9:57Speaker 1: and a cubit wide, and two cubits high. It's horned.
- 10:00Speaker 1: of one piece with it. They overlaid the top and
- 10:03Speaker 1: all the sides and the horns with pure gold and
- 10:05Speaker 1: made a gold molding around it. They made two gold
- 10:08Speaker 1: rings below the molding, two on each of the opposite
- 10:11Speaker 1: sides to hold the poles used to carry it. They
- 10:14Speaker 1: made the poles of acacia wood and overlaid them with gold.
- 10:17Speaker 1: They also made the sacred anointing oil and the pure
- 10:20Speaker 1: fragrant incense, the work of a perfumer. And we're going
- 10:24Speaker 1: to stop there here with the things they're making. We
- 10:26Speaker 1: have a couple more things for them to make that
- 10:29Speaker 1: we're going to talk about next time. But with that,
- 10:32Speaker 1: we're going to end this episode of the Bible Study Podcast.
