- 2:31And in 1965, opening in the New Dome Stadium here in Houston.
- 2:36And I hope that you fans were tuned in just a few moments ago.
- 2:40And Lowell was reminiscing with Bob Aspromati about opening day out here.
- 2:44On April the 10th, 1962, when the Cole 45s opened for the first time in the National League in the stadium.
- 2:52And of course, the Cole 45s won that day by the score of 11-2 against the Cubs.
- 2:58I thought you might be interested in the starting lineups on those days, so let me run them down for you.
- 3:03Starting for the Cubs that day on April the 10th, 1962, Lou Brock was in center field.
- 3:10Ken Hubs was at second base.
- 3:13Billy Williams in left field.
- 3:16Ernie Banks on first.
- 3:19George Altman in right field.
- 3:21Ron Santo was at third.
- 3:24Elder White was at shortstop.
- 3:27Kuno Berrigan was the catcher.
- 3:30And Don Cardwell did the pitching for the Cubs.
- 3:33Houston starting lineup on April the 10th of 1962.
- 3:39Bob Aspromati third.
- 3:41Al Spangler center field.
- 3:44Roman Mejias right field.

- 3:49Jim Pendleton left field.
- 3:52Al Smith was the catcher.
- 3:55Joy Amalfitano at second base.
- 3:58Don Budden at shortstop.
- 4:00And Bobby Shantz was the starting pitcher, and he went all the way for the Cole 45s.
- 4:06And Houston won the ball game 11-2.
- 4:10Ernie Banks had a home run for the Cubs that day.
- 4:13Mejias had two home runs, and Al Smith had one.
- 4:16the Cole 45s out hit the Cubs on that opening day by 13-5.
- 4:21the Cubs, before the afternoon was over, used a total of five pitchers.
- 4:26Cardwell, as I mentioned, started.
- 4:28Dave Gerrard was on.
- 4:30Barney Schultz did some pitching for the Cubs.
- 4:32Jack Warner and also Al Leary.
- 4:36So that's a brief recap on a cloudy day in 1962, opening day April the 10th.
- 4:43And this is the wrap-up out here today.
- 4:45We might mention also the umpires on that day.
- 4:48the umpire in chief of the plate umpire that day was Dusty Pagas.
- 4:52Stan Landis was at first, Vinnie Smith at second, and Mel Steiner the umpire at third.
- 4:56And this will wrap it up out here today.
- 4:59the final game in Cole Stadium, and there go the Cole 45s out in the third.
- 5:03Pitching this finale here at Cole Stadium today will be Bob Bruce.
- 5:15Bob taking his walk out to the mound now.
- 5:18He will be out after his 15th win of the year.
- 5:22If Bob can chalk up number 15 today, he will become the winningest pitcher in Cole 45 history for a single season.
- 5:30As he holds the record of 14 now, along with Dick Farrell who won 14 last year.
- 5:37Now the Westbury High School Band from Houston, our national anthem.
- 6:07the Westbury High School Band from Houston, our national anthem.
- 6:32We have a cloudy day out here at Cole Stadium.
- 6:47We have had a few sprinkles of rain, but that's all.
- 6:51We have quite a strong wind that's blowing out to right field today, which is unusual.
- 6:56And it's about 10 miles an hour, 82 degrees the temperature.
- 6:59And the humidity stands at 70 percent.
- 7:02And here's the lead batter now for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 7:06Right-handed batter Dick Truszewski to face Bob Bruce.
- 7:09Here's the windup by Bob and the first pitch of the final game on the way.
- 7:13And it's too high for ball one, slow curve ball, one ball, no strikes.
- 7:17Truszewski is hitting 250, has one homer in 24 runs batted in.
- 7:23Joe Becker coaching on first base for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 7:28And Pete Reesher down on third base, swinging a foul by Truszewski, a tap back to the screen off the right side.
- 7:35Al Spangler left field, Jimmy Winn in center and Rusty Staub in right.
- 7:40Bob Espramati at third base, Eddie Casco at short.
- 7:44Joe Morgan second base and Wal Bond on first and Jerry Grote is the catcher.
- 7:49Bob Bruce, 14 wins, 9 losses on the mound for the Cole 45s.
- 7:53Here's the windup now and the pitch to Truszewski and there's a line drive left field.
- 7:57Al Spangler can't get it, base hit, so Truszewski has opened the ball game with a line single in the left field.
- 8:03That'll bring up Darrell Griffith now, the right fielder.
- 8:07Griffith is hitting 279 with four homers in 19 runs batted in.
- 8:13On fire behind the plate today is Tony Vinson, Lee Wires at first,
- 8:20Jaco Conlon at second base and Doug Harvey is umpiring down on third.
- 8:24Starting to sprinkle a little bit now.
- 8:27Here's the stretch and a look over to first base, Bond holding up against Truszewski.
- 8:31There he started to go on that when he took it high and outside.
- 8:34They're watching for the punt on that one and both Bond and Espramati moved in on it.
- 8:37But he takes it high and outside ball one.
- 8:40Darrell Griffith, the left-handed batter.
- 8:43My betch in here, in case you missed the interview between Lowell and Bob Espramati before the game,
- 8:49is that only two players are in this ball game for Houston that opened in 1962.
- 8:54There's a pop punt foul back up and over the screen into the box seats and it's one ball, one strike.
- 9:00On opening day of 1962, Bob Espramati was at third as he is out here today.
- 9:05And Al Spangler was in center field and Al was playing left today.
- 9:10One ball, one strike.
- 9:13Truszewski is single to left field.
- 9:16And Willie Davis will be up next.
- 9:19Still watching for that punt. Now Espramati is a bit off third base.
- 9:22Here's the stretch by Bruce. A check on his runner at first base.
- 9:25There's a foul, a big swing that time.
- 9:27Not funny on that one. He fouled it back up against the screen in his one and two.
- 9:31Oh, the Braves just got another one. Not that they need it.
- 9:34But Joe Torre has hit a home run on the eighth inning with nobody on.
- 9:38That's 14 to 4 now.
- 9:4114 to 4 Milwaukee leading in the top of the eighth and the Braves are still batting.
- 9:46That is five pitchers now that Malk is used today. Jack Bolshan into the eighth inning.
- 9:51Here's the one and two stretch by Bob Bruce. Swinging a miss and he struck him out.
- 9:56Adele Griffith goes down swinging and there's one out here in the first.
- 10:00And that will bring up the center fielder, Willie Davis.
- 10:03That's the 130th strikeout for Bruce this year. He leads the club in that department.
- 10:08And now here's Willie Davis batting 295. He bats left.
- 10:12Twelve homers and 73 runs batted in.
- 10:16One out and Truszewski, who's single the left field, is on first base.
- 10:19Here's the stretch by Bob and a check on his runner over there.
- 10:23Pitch on the way to Willie Davis and a big swing of that one and he missed it and a strike long. One strike.
- 10:29Bruce's first victory over Los Angeles this year was a score of 2 to 1.
- 10:33And his other victory also was a one runner when he shut out the Dodgers by a score of 1 to nothing.
- 10:40So both of Bob's wins have been real tight ball games.
- 10:44One strike to count on Willie Davis. Here's the stretch again by Bruce.
- 10:47There's a high pop off the left side. Right in fair territory.
- 10:50Aspromotti down the line. Halfway to third. Two down.
- 10:53Willie Davis pops up to third base two away.
- 10:57Here's the left fielder, Tommy Davis. He had a real good night out here in the first night of the series on Friday night.
- 11:02Two outs Truszewski on first base.
- 11:06This is by far the best year that Bruce has ever had in the major leagues.
- 11:10His previous high win total was in 62. His first year with Houston, 21-10 and lost nine.
- 11:20Bruce has defeated every club in the National League this year at least once except St. Louis.
- 11:26Here's Tommy Davis hitting 275. He bats right at it.
- 11:29Truszewski on first. Started to go and then held up.
- 11:32Ground ball to the shortstop. Eddie Casco.
- 11:34Eddie goes on to second base to Morgan to retire the side.
- 11:37That's it for the Dodgers in the top of the first as Truszewski is forced short to second base.
- 11:43No runs and one hit. There were no errors. One man left on.
- 11:46Top of the first inning the Los Angeles Dodgers nothing.
- 11:49And the Colt 45s are coming to bat.
- 11:52Taste fine tobacco at its best. Smoke the lucky strike.
- 11:59Fine tobacco at its best. the taste that they is like.
- 12:03Great taste was born the day they made this famous lucky blend.
- 12:07And it's a fact each lucky stack with fine tobacco end to end.
- 12:12Taste fine tobacco at its best. Smoke the lucky strike.
- 12:16Smoke the lucky strike.
- 12:20What makes lucky strikes so popular with people who smoke for taste.
- 12:24the answer is simple.
- 12:26Luckies bring you the great taste of fine tobacco at its best.
- 12:29That's because luckies are blended with fine tobacco.
- 12:33Fine tobacco from one end of that cigarette to the other.
- 12:36If you're a smoker and you smoke for taste remember.
- 12:39L.S.M.F.T.
- 12:41Lucky strike means fine tobacco and that means great taste.
- 12:45So taste fine tobacco at its best.
- 12:48Smoke a lucky strike. Why not buy a carton.
- 12:53Right-hander Don Drysdale up for the Dodgers here this afternoon.
- 12:57He'll be looking at Al Spangler, Joe Morgan and Rusty Staub in the bottom half of the first.
- 13:02Drysdale has 18 victories this year against 15 defeats.
- 13:08Here's Spangler batting left-handed. He's hitting 248.
- 13:12Alice hit four homers and has driven in 36 runs so far.
- 13:17Still getting a light sprinkle out here as we start the bottom of the first.
- 13:25Drysdale, a big fella, he stands 6'6", weighs 210 pounds.
- 13:31Don is 28 years old.
- 13:33Here's the windup now and the first pitch on the way to Spangler.
- 13:36There's a strike on the outside corner of the bell to strike one.
- 13:40Joe Morgan will be up next.
- 13:43One hit in the ball game, top of the first inning by the shortstop Dick Drozewski.
- 13:48Here's the pitch on the way again now and Al takes it low and outside and it's one ball and one strike, one on one count.
- 13:54Drysdale has defeated Houston twice this year and has lost once.
- 13:59And his lifetime record against the Colt 45s is five wins, four losses.
- 14:05One ball, one strike on Spangler. Joe Morgan will be up next.
- 14:09Here's the pitch, ground ball to third.
- 14:11Bart Shirley has it, quick throw to first, low and Fairley dug it out.
- 14:15And Spangler is out at first base, third to first.
- 14:18That will bring up Joe Morgan now with one down.
- 14:21Let's take a look at the defensive alignment here for the Dodgers today.
- 14:24Tommy Davis is in left, Willie Davis in center and Darryl Griffith is in right field.
- 14:29Bart Shirley at third, Dick Drozewski at shortstop, Nate Oliver second base, and Ron Fairley on first with John Orozaburro the catcher.
- 14:38Jim Busby coaching at third for Houston.
- 14:41And Sam Adair is coaching at first.
- 14:43Here's the windup and the pitch on the way now by Drysdale.
- 14:47There's the ball, it's in too high to Morgan, ball on.
- 14:50Joe is hitting O, 56, a little left handed better.
- 14:55One ball, no strikes.
- 14:57Here's the windup now, the next pitch into Morgan and he takes it just a little bit too high.
- 15:01If a ball two, it's two and nothing.
- 15:04Drysdale holds one shutout over Houston this year, winning by a score of six to nothing.
- 15:11And his other victory over the cold 45s was by a score of five to two.
- 15:15Here's the 2-0 windup into Morgan and Joe laces one to the second baseman, a one hopper to Nate Oliver and on to Fairley two down.
- 15:22So the first two Houston batters have bounced out, Spangler and Morgan, and now here's Rusty Staub.
- 15:30the one game that Bruce has lost, or rather that Drysdale has lost to Houston this year,
- 15:36was the night that Bruce shut out Los Angeles one to nothing and Drysdale was the losing pitcher that night.
- 15:44Here's Rusty hitting 202 with six homers and 32 runs batted in.
- 15:49And the windup now and the first pitch to Rusty, but Rusty pops it up in the infield.
- 15:53That's a real high one off the first base side and Ron Fairley calling for it now on the edge of the infield grass and that retires the side.
- 16:00Three up and three down for Houston first inning. No runs, no hits, no errors and nobody left on.
- 16:05And at the end of one inning of play here at Coast Edium this afternoon, Los Angeles nothing and Houston nothing.
- 16:12Say all you cigarette smokers, have you ever tasted fine tobacco at its best?
- 16:17Well you have if you've ever smoked a Lucky Strike.
- 16:20You see every Lucky is blended with fine tobacco from one end of that cigarette to the other.
- 16:26You know what LSMFT stands for. Lucky Strike means fine tobacco.
- 16:32Well that means great taste, so why not do this?
- 16:35Taste fine tobacco at its best. Just look for the pack with the big red bullseye.
- 16:40Smoke a Lucky Strike.
- 16:43Taste fine tobacco at its best. Smoke a Lucky Strike.
- 16:51the taste that millions like. Great taste was born the day they made this famous Lucky's blend.
- 16:57And it's a fact, each Lucky's packed with fine tobacco end to end.
- 17:02Taste fine tobacco at its best. Smoke a Lucky Strike.
- 17:06Smoke a Lucky Strike.
- 17:13Now we're moving on to the first half of the second inning now and the lead batter will be John Roseborough for the Dodgers.
- 17:19Ron Fairley and Nate Oliver will follow. No score.
- 17:22Roseborough is a left handed batter. He's hitting 284.
- 17:26Three homers and 42 runs batted in.
- 17:29One hit off Bruce, a lead single by Truszewski in the first inning.
- 17:32Roseborough goes for that slow pitch and pops it up into the seats off the left side.
- 17:36Strike one. That one almost went through an umbrella.
- 17:40One strike. Ron Fairley will bat next. Top of the second.
- 17:46Outfield is, well, Wynn is straight away in center.
- 17:51Staub is pulling Roseborough in right though. Curveball low inside and it's one ball and one strike. One-one count.
- 17:57Bruce has pitched 190 innings, allowed 186 hits. Bob's ERA is 2.89 as he starts today, making his 29th start of the year.
- 18:08Here's the pitch. Roseborough hits a long foul to right field.
- 18:11Ooh, he got a hold of that one.
- 18:13Way off the end of the stands down the right field line. Foul ball one and two.
- 18:18Bruce in his 28 previous starts has gone the distance eight times and his eight complete games is high on our staff.
- 18:27Here's the one and two windup now and the pitch on the way to Roseborough.
- 18:30There's a ball outside. Ball two, strike two.
- 18:33One of the reasons for Bob's good year we have mentioned before is the fact that his control has been excellent.
- 18:38He has given up only 31 walks in 191 innings this year.
- 18:43Here's the 2-2 pitch to Roseborough. Now there's a fly ball right field.
- 18:47Steve and Staub is over four down the run. He's going to get it.
- 18:50Makes the catch out and deep right center field, one down.
- 18:53So Roseborough drives one to deep right center taken by Rusty Staub.
- 18:58And here's Ron Fairley, the first baseman. Fairley is hitting 257.
- 19:02Left handed batter also with 10 homers and 72 runs batted in.
- 19:08One out, nobody on base.
- 19:11Nothing for Los Angeles, nothing for Houston.
- 19:15Here's the windup by Bruce and the pitch on the way now.
- 19:18And Fairley takes a strike around the knees.
- 19:21Now let's check these scores now. I want to keep you posted all afternoon on them.
- 19:25Because as most of you know, they're very important.
- 19:28Braves are still way out in front of Philadelphia in their ball game today, low inside.
- 19:32One ball, one strike.
- 19:34Milwaukee 14, Philadelphia 4 now with the Phillies batting in the bottom half of the eighth.
- 19:41Tony Kloninger was the starting pitcher for the Braves. He was taken out in the eighth inning.
- 19:45Has just been removed incidentally, ball inside.
- 19:48And Jim Bunning started for Philadelphia but was knocked out in the fourth.
- 19:52Joe Torrey is homered for the Braves in the eighth with nobody on.
- 19:55John Callison has homered twice.
- 19:57And he has just picked up the fifth run for Philadelphia with an eighth inning homer on.
- 20:01Swing and a foul ball. Ball two, strike two on Fairley.
- 20:05So that is now Milwaukee 14 and Philadelphia 5 with the Phillies still batting in the bottom of the eighth.
- 20:14Ball two and strike two on Fairley. One out, nobody on base.
- 20:18Nate Oliver will bat next for the Dodgers here now on the top of the second inning.
- 20:23Bruce goes into his windup and the pitch on the way to Fairley.
- 20:26He just about got him on that one. He checked just in time.
- 20:30High inside pitch but he almost went for it. Three balls, two strikes.
- 20:34Cincinnati beat New York for their eighth win in a row in the first game of their doubleheader, 4-1.
- 20:39Jim O'Toole won his 17th game and Tracy Stallard was the loser.
- 20:43He's the first major league pitcher to lose 20 this year.
- 20:45Foul ball up in the seats off the left side by Fairley.
- 20:48And the count holds at 3-2. No home runs in that first game at New York.
- 20:52So the Reds now have won eight games in a row. They have won 11 of their last 12 games.
- 20:57the second game is just getting started.
- 20:59Joey J will go for the Reds. Galen Sisco for New York.
- 21:03At this moment the Reds and the Phillies are tied for first place.
- 21:07Here's the 3-2 pitch now. Swing and a miss and he struck him out.
- 21:11So Fairley goes out on strikes, two away, and that will bring up the second baseman, Nate Oliver.
- 21:15That's the second strikeout for Bruce today. He got Griffith in the first.
- 21:20First portion of this afternoon's broadcast is being sent your way by the American Tobacco Company,
- 21:26makers of Lucky Strike Cigarettes.
- 21:28Here's Oliver. He bats right, two outs, nobody on, hitting 249.
- 21:3320 runs batted in for this little right-handed batter.
- 21:36Bruce's first pitch to him is outside of the letters, ball one.
- 21:40St. Louis, three, and Pittsburgh nothing at the end of five.
- 21:44Roger Craig against Vernon Law in that one.
- 21:47And the Cubs defeated San Francisco, 4-1 in the first game of their doubleheader today.
- 21:53There was a pretty good pitching attraction there.
- 21:55Here's the 1-0 pitch to Oliver now. There's a high foul, no play on that one.
- 21:59Back up into the seats, one ball, one strike.
- 22:01Larry Jackson defeated Juan Marichal in that first game.
- 22:05Cubs won it 4-1. Jackson won his 23rd game of the year.
- 22:09Marichal is a 20-game winner. He's 20-8 now, and Jackson is 23-10.
- 22:13It was nothing and nothing until the Cubs scored all four runs in the eighth inning.
- 22:17And the Giants came back with one in the top half of the ninth inning.
- 22:21Here's the 1-1 pitch to Oliver.
- 22:23One strike on the outside corner of the knees in this one and two.
- 22:27Yankees did not score in the 11th inning.
- 22:31And New York and Washington are still tied 2-2 with the Senators batting in the bottom half of the 11th.
- 22:37Y.D. Ford started for New York, removed in the eighth.
- 22:40And Benny Daniels started for Washington, taken out in the 11th inning.
- 22:44Mickey Mantle homered in the seventh with nobody on for New York.
- 22:47And Don Zimmer hit one for Washington in the eighth with nobody on.
- 22:51Here's the 1-2 pitch to Oliver now.
- 22:53Ground ball in the hole. Casco backhands it, can't get it.
- 22:56That'll probably be a base hit.
- 22:59Ball got away from Casco, going back into the hole.
- 23:02Got a glove on it. It hit the heel of his glove and bounced up his arm.
- 23:05And Oliver is safe at first.
- 23:08So with two outs, I doubt that Casco could have made the play on Oliver had he picked it up.
- 23:12Let's see what the official score says.
- 23:15So there are two outs now, and here's Bart Shirley.
- 23:17They're going to give him an error on it.
- 23:19Bart is officially charged as an error on Casco.
- 23:22That's only about the 15th error on Casco this year.
- 23:29So it's a boot on the Houston shortstop, Eddie Casco.
- 23:32And now here's Bart Shirley. There's a lob over the first base.
- 23:35Shirley is hitting 306.
- 23:38That's right-handed, five runs batted in.
- 23:42No score, top of the second.
- 23:44I think the Dodgers have their second base runner on now.
- 23:47And it takes in breaks on the first pitch.
- 23:49There's a ground ball right back up the middle, and Morgan forced him on it.
- 23:52Well, he put that one in a good spot.
- 23:55Joe was standing on the bag when he caught that ground ball on the hit-and-run.
- 23:59So Shirley is safe at first, and Oliver is forced out unassisted by the second baseman, Joe Morgan.
- 24:06And that retires the side. No runs, no hits, one error.
- 24:09One man was left on base. Bottom of the second coming up now.
- 24:12Dodgers nothing. Colt 45 is nothing.
- 24:16Here's a final on that Washington game. the Senators won it.
- 24:21Washington has defeated New York 3-2 in 11 innings, and that snaps the Yankees' 11-game winning streak.
- 24:28Hal Renup was the loser, Ronnie Klein the winner for Washington.
- 24:32Home runs by Mickey Mantle and Don Zimmer.
- 24:35the Baltimore Orioles defeated Cleveland this afternoon, 4-0, a three-hit shutout by Robin Roberts for his 12th win of the year,
- 24:42and Sonny Siebert lost it for Cleveland.
- 24:45And Norm Siebern had a home run for the Orioles in the fourth with one on.
- 24:49Chicago has scored a run in the top of the first at Kansas City. That game has just started.
- 24:53Joel Horland against Blue Moon Odom in that one.
- 24:56And at the end of 6-1-1 for the Tigers batting in the bottom of the seventh, Tigers 3-0,
- 25:01Bill Monbouquet for the Red Sox, Joe Sparma for Detroit,
- 25:05and Bill Bruton had a home run for Detroit in the fifth with nobody on.
- 25:09And Minnesota-Los Angeles did not get started.
- 25:12So New York's lead has been trimmed now to three games in the American League race,
- 25:17as Baltimore has won 4-0, and the Yankees have lost 3-2, and the White Sox are just playing now.
- 25:23Just started. San Francisco, Chicago, no score at the end of three.
- 25:27the Phillies picked up two runs in the eighth inning.
- 25:30It's now 14-6, Milwaukee going into the ninth inning.
- 25:36And no score yet on Cincinnati-New York's second game.
- 25:40And at the end of six innings, the Cardinals lead Pittsburgh 3-0.
- 25:46There's Wal Bond now, leading off in the bottom half of the second.
- 25:57There's Wal Bond. He's hitting.256. 20 home runs and 83 runs batted in.
- 26:02Here's the windup by Drysdale on the pitch now.
- 26:04There's a high pop foul off the left side. No chance, though, for Shirley to get it.
- 26:08Going back up into the first or second row back of the Houston dugout.
- 26:13We just had a scoring change on the ground ball hit by Nate Oliver.
- 26:17Changed that error to Casco to a base hit for Nate Oliver.
- 26:23So that's the second hit off Bruce. He raised the error on Casco and credit Oliver with an infield single.
- 26:31One strike now. Here's the pitch by Drysdale, and it's low and outside. One ball, one strike.
- 26:37No score, bottom half of the second inning.
- 26:42Bond will be followed by Bob Aspromonte and Jimmy Wynn.
- 26:46Here's the 1-1 pitch now. There's a high pop-up left side.
- 26:50Shortstop Dick Truszewski just off the left side a second on the infield grass, and there's one down.
- 26:55So Bond has opened the second by popping to short. And here's Aspro now with one out.
- 27:03Meant two hits in the ball game so far, and the Dodgers have both of them.
- 27:10Well, the sprinkles have stopped now. Little blue sky overhead.
- 27:19Here's Aspro. He's hitting 283, 12 homers, and 66 runs batted in.
- 27:24First pitch to him is inside up around the letters for ball one. One ball, no strikes.
- 27:31Drysdale in 305 innings this year has struck out 227 batters and has issued 62 bases on balls.
- 27:41Drysdale has pitched 21 complete games this year. This is his 39th start.
- 27:46Ground ball back in the hole. Truszewski there though. There's the throw to first and they got him.
- 27:52So Aspromonte got it down to the hole over to Truszewski's right, but he fielded the ball easily and came up with it.
- 27:58Aspro has bounced out short to first. Here's Jimmy Nguyen now. Nguyen is hitting 215, four homers and 14 runs batted in.
- 28:09Two outs, nobody on base. Last half of the second inning.
- 28:1628-year-old right-hander from Van Nuys, California doing the pitching for the Dodgers today, Don Drysdale.
- 28:21Nguyen got a hold of one deep left field, but Tommy Davis is back quickly to hold in to retire the side.
- 28:26He hit the hit ball, but Davis went back and dragged it down. Three up and three down.
- 28:31But Drysdale retires the first six men to face him out here today. No runs, no hits, no errors and nobody left on.
- 28:37And our ball game now goes to the first half of the third with the score Los Angeles nothing and Houston nothing.
- 28:44Taste fine tobacco at its best, smoke a lucky strike. Fine tobacco at its best, the taste that's made it right.
- 28:56the way taste was born the day they made this famous lucky blend. And it's a fact, each lucky stack with fine tobacco end to end.
- 29:05Taste fine tobacco at its best, smoke a lucky strike. Smoke a lucky strike.
- 29:14Lucky Strike
- 29:39Lucky Strike, LSMFT. Lucky Strike means fine tobacco. And that means great taste.
- 29:49First half of the third inning we've had a little bit of a wind shift out here now, not too much.
- 29:55It seems to occasionally blow in from center field toward the plate.
- 29:58We mentioned earlier that the wind today is blowing from the left field corner to the right side,
- 30:02which is just the opposite of the normal prevailing winds out here.
- 30:06Here's the first pitch to Drysdale, bounces to third, Asparrow up with it on the grass, throw to first and there's one down.
- 30:12So Drysdale, a 179 hitter with one homer, eight runs batted in, bounces out third to first.
- 30:18That'll bring up the top of the batting order, Dick Truszewski. One out, nobody on base.
- 30:24Score nothing, nothing third inning.
- 30:29Aspromonte has had only 11 errors this year at third base.
- 30:36the National League record for the fewest number of errors in a season by a third baseman is held jointly by Aspromonte and Stan Hack of the Chicago Cubs.
- 30:46Truszewski takes a strike up around the letters and that is 13.
- 30:50the record was originally set by Hack of the Cubs in 1937 and tied in 62 by Aspromonte.
- 30:57And up to this point Asparrow has committed only 11 errors.
- 31:00Here's the pitch now high and it's one ball, one strike. Fast ball.
- 31:03One out, nobody on. Darrell Griffith will be up next.
- 31:09Bob Bruce and Don Drysdale.
- 31:14Bruce has a sign again now from Jerry Grote and here's the one-on-one pitch and Truszewski takes just a little bit high again for ball two and it's two and one.
- 31:26Ball two, strike one.
- 31:30Outfield shaded just a bit off the right side for Truszewski.
- 31:33Here's the pitch now, curve ball and that's popped up off the left side of the plate back by the screen.
- 31:37Now Grote back but he can't get it.
- 31:39Hits up on top of the wire almost directly behind the plate and it's ball two, strike two.
- 31:46Here at Coast Stadium this year in the first eight games between Houston and Los Angeles, the Dodgers have taken sixth.
- 31:53And the Dodgers have already clinched the season series winning nine against Houston's five.
- 31:59We still have three more games to play next weekend at Dodger Stadium.
- 32:04Ball two, strike two.
- 32:06One out, Drysdale has bounced to third and Truszewski singled his first time.
- 32:11A 2-2 pitch on the way popped up back by the shortstop Eddie Casco over by second base and just behind the bag.
- 32:18A little bit shaded over by the second base side two down.
- 32:20Truszewski pops the short.
- 32:22Here's Gerald Griffith now with two outs.
- 32:25Number 26, the right fielder, Gerald Griffith.
- 32:29Griffith, the left-handed batter, struck out his first time up.
- 32:34Two outs, nobody on, nothing and nothing.
- 32:41Here's the windup by Bruce now, the pitch on the way and there's a swing and a miss and a strike one.
- 32:46the Gold 45s going into play today are four games ahead of their 1963 base.
- 32:53the 45s have won 64 games, lost 91 a year ago at this time.
- 32:58Houston had won 60 and lost 95.
- 33:01Four games on the plus side there.
- 33:04Here's the pitch to Griffith now on a swing and a miss, got him on a slip pitch or a change and it's strike two.
- 33:10In the games behind column, 45s are 10 games closer to first place than they were a year ago at this time.
- 33:20Here's the two-strike pitch to Griffith now fastball and he punches a foul high and up into the seats off the third base side and the count holds at two strikes.
- 33:33Two-strike count now on Darryl Griffith as Drysdale is bounced out and Truszewski has popped a shortstop.
- 33:39Bob Wines again now, here's the pitch on the way and he struck him out, got him on a curveball lower inside.
- 33:45That's the third strikeout for Bruce today.
- 33:48So three up and three down here for the Dodgers in the third, no runs, no hits, no errors and nobody left on base.
- 33:55And the score now, Houston nothing and Los Angeles nothing as we go into the bottom half of the third.
- 34:01If you're a cigarette smoker, here's a question for you.
- 34:04Have you tried a Lucky lately?
- 34:06If not, just remember this.
- 34:08When you taste a Lucky, you taste fine tobacco at its best.
- 34:13After all, LSMFT, Lucky Strike means fine tobacco and that means great taste.
- 34:19It means when you light up a Lucky, you get rich, full, enjoyable flavor.
- 34:24So have yourself a reunion with a great cigarette.
- 34:27Get together with the Red Bulls Eye and taste fine tobacco at its best.
- 34:31Smoke a Lucky Strike.
- 34:35Taste fine tobacco at its best.
- 34:38Smoke a Lucky Strike.
- 34:40Fine tobacco at its best.
- 34:42the taste that millions like.
- 34:44Great taste was born today.
- 34:46They made this famous Lucky Blend.
- 34:48And it's a fact, each Lucky Smack with fine tobacco end to end.
- 34:53Taste fine tobacco at its best.
- 34:55Smoke a Lucky Strike.
- 34:57Smoke a Lucky Strike.
- 35:00Last half of the third inning now.
- 35:06Phillies batting in the bottom of the ninth now.
- 35:1014 to 6, Braves leading and this is the Phillies' last chance.
- 35:15Eddie Casco will lead off for the Colt 45s.
- 35:18Jerry Grote and Bob Bruce will follow here in the bottom of the third.
- 35:23Casco is hitting 247 with 22 runs batted in.
- 35:2816 doubles and one triple for Eddie so far this year.
- 35:32Here's Drysdale's windup in the first pitch to Casco and Eddie takes a strike above the knees, strike one.
- 35:38Drysdale has retired the first six men to face him.
- 35:41No score, third inning.
- 35:44Jerry Grote in the on deck circle off the left side.
- 35:46Here's the pitch now.
- 35:48Eddie started to go and he took a strike.
- 35:50That's right up around the belt and it's 0-2.
- 35:56He strikes on Casco, lead batter third inning.
- 36:00This is the ninth year that Drysdale has been in the Brooklyn Dodgers.
- 36:07Ball is over but low.
- 36:08He started out with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1956 after spending a couple seasons in the minor leagues.
- 36:16He's won 141 games and lost 105 in the nine seasons.
- 36:22And he has 18 wins, 15 losses today.
- 36:25And the one and two pitch now to Eddie Casco.
- 36:27Curve ball tapped foul up against the screen off the right side.
- 36:31And the count holds at one ball and two strikes.
- 36:41One and two count.
- 36:43Outfield is pretty well straight away here for Casco.
- 36:48Here's the windup by Drysdale on the next pitch to Casco.
- 36:51Fastball, ground ball in the hole, Trisuski back deep, throw to first base and they just got him on a close play at first.
- 36:59That's the second time that Trisuski has had to go back in the hole to throw out a runner, Aspromotti, in the second inning.
- 37:05And now he gets Casco to open the third.
- 37:08Here's Jerry Grote, the Houston catcher, hitting 183.
- 37:12Three homers and 24 runs batted in.
- 37:16It's interesting to note that going into play today, the Phillies' magic number to clinch the pennant was seven.
- 37:21And in just a few moments it could be that Cincinnati will have that magic number.
- 37:27Here's the windup in the pitch now.
- 37:29There's a swing by Grote and a foul off the left side.
- 37:32In case you've joined us late, the Phillies are losing their first game and Cincinnati has already won their first game.
- 37:39Their eighth consecutive win, incidentally.
- 37:42And they're playing the second game now at New York, just getting underway.
- 37:46One strike.
- 37:48Here's the pitch to Grote now and he starts to go and he checks it.
- 37:51And it's one ball and one strike, one-one count.
- 37:54the magic number in the American League is still four because the Yankees have lost their game and Baltimore has won.
- 38:01One ball, one strike pitch.
- 38:03There's a swing and a miss by Grote.
- 38:04Pitch up around the letters and it's one ball and two strikes.
- 38:11Last half for the third.
- 38:13Houston nothing, Los Angeles nothing.
- 38:15Grote hits one to right field.
- 38:17Darrell Griffith there though and he hauls it down.
- 38:19Well hit line drive into right.
- 38:21Griffith moving quickly to his right to make the catch.
- 38:24So it's two down.
- 38:25That will bring up the Houston pitcher, Bob Bruce.
- 38:27Forty-minus pitcher, number 30, Bob Bruce.
- 38:32Bob is hitting 186.
- 38:35He has one run batted and one double.
- 38:37Left field does not pull him.
- 38:43Left fielder Tommy Davis way over in left center field.
- 38:46Here's Drysdale's first pitch to Bruce.
- 38:51Bob taps the first one.
- 38:52the third baseman Bart Shirley cuts in front of Trudewski.
- 38:55Easy play at first base to retire the side.
- 38:57So Drysdale gets nine batters in a row.
- 38:59He retires the side in order for the first three innings.
- 39:02And that's all for Houston here now in the bottom of the third.
- 39:05No runs, no hits, no errors and nobody left on base.
- 39:08And the score now at the end of three innings of play is Los Angeles nothing and Houston nothing.
- 39:14There have been only two hits today and the Dodgers picked up both of them,
- 39:17a single by Trudewski in the first and a single by Nate Oliver in the second inning.
- 39:22Oliver's was an infield hit.
- 39:24And as I just mentioned, the 45s have been retired in order through the first three innings
- 39:29without a strikeout by Don Drysdale.
- 39:32And of course we start the fourth inning out here this afternoon, our final day at Colt Stadium.
- 39:37the score is Los Angeles nothing and Houston nothing and right here in the fourth inning,
- 39:41let's hear from Lowell Pass.
- 39:43All right, Gene, thank you very much.
- 39:45And hi again, everybody.
- 39:46Two fine right-handers battling it out here in the final game for the Colts at home for this year,
- 39:53the final game regularly scheduled at Colt Stadium ever.
- 39:59Bob Bruce for the 45s and Don Drysdale for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 40:04the peg has been made to second base, time for batter up.
- 40:07And the leadoff batter here on the top of the fourth inning is Willie Davis, a left-hand hitter.
- 40:12He popped to Aspermati at third base in the first inning.
- 40:16Willie batting at 295.
- 40:19Very good all-around ball player, great speed.
- 40:23He has 73 runs batted in on the season.
- 40:26Here's Bruce with the pitch now and the first one swung on and missed, strike one.
- 40:31Willie Davis will take a cut for ball.
- 40:35It's a do or die sort of a swing.
- 40:37He can be fooled quite frequently.
- 40:41And the pitch, bouncing in there.
- 40:44On back to the wire, ball one and strike one.
- 40:47To show the speed of Willie, he's stolen 36 bases this year, behind Maury Wills, of course,
- 40:53the total number of stolen bases and been thrown out 14 times.
- 40:57He's struck out 55 times on the season.
- 41:00Outfield flagging to pull deep.
- 41:03the wind is blowing this way now, changing round just a little bit.
- 41:07Here's the pitch from Bob, high.
- 41:09On upstairs for ball two and strike one.
- 41:12If you dial in a little late, there is no score, two hits in the game, and the Dodgers have those.
- 41:18And we have on the infield Aspermonte and Casco, the left side, to the right side Morgan and Bond.
- 41:24And Bruce's pitch, swung on, and he shaves it on the top side, fouling it in against Grote,
- 41:29who sort of keels over there.
- 41:32And Jerry gets up now.
- 41:34Trainer Ull out quickly.
- 41:36Grote limping a little bit.
- 41:38It could have been that it got him on the lag, the right lag up just above the knee.
- 41:46That could have been at the top of the shoe now, where he's flexing the right foot just a little bit.
- 41:53Ball two and strike two.
- 41:55Tommy Davis will be the on-deck man, and John Roseburg to bat third here.
- 42:00Nothing and nothing.
- 42:01Grote down to the couch again.
- 42:04Got a real fine crowd here for a threatening afternoon in Houston.
- 42:09And you good people in Louisiana, we've got a lot of your people over here.
- 42:15We had a big ball for the big football game last night.
- 42:17Ball two, strike two.
- 42:18Bruce's pitch, swung on.
- 42:19He reached for a high one and fouled it back to the left.
- 42:22And Grote running it down, but it clears the wire.
- 42:27And a ball two, strike two count.
- 42:31Bob Bruce, having pitched 190 and one third innings with 14 wins and nine defeats.
- 42:42the earned run average is 289, 289.
- 42:46And his mound opponent, 219 on the earned run average.
- 42:50Here's the pitch on the way.
- 42:51Swung on a high one hit down the right field line, cutting back over into the seats, though I believe both Morgan and Rusty letting up on the run.
- 42:59It's into the boxes.
- 43:00Ball two and strike two.
- 43:02Well, Bulletin final score.
- 43:04Milwaukee defeated Philadelphia 14 to 8.
- 43:08the Phillies got two more runs in the ninth inning.
- 43:10Eight runs normally enough to win most any ball game, of course.
- 43:13And Callison had a two-run homer in the ninth inning.
- 43:17No one can say he didn't do his share.
- 43:19He had three home runs in the ball game and drove in four of their eight runs with homers.
- 43:25A chain swung on it down to Bond and foul territory.
- 43:29Just inches over that line.
- 43:32Ball two and strike two.
- 43:33Kloninger, who started but was relieved by Olivo in the eighth, was the winning pitcher.
- 43:38Kloninger became an 18-game winner today, 14 losses.
- 43:42Bunning was the starting pitcher and he was belted.
- 43:46Lost his seventh.
- 43:47He's won 18.
- 43:49So the story, in case you didn't hear or couldn't find it, recorded anywhere today, why it's a tight race in the NASA League.
- 43:56There's a swing and a miss, and he bruised him one time.
- 43:59Davis goes down swinging, and it's the fourth strikeout recorded by Bob Bruce.
- 44:05the left fielder, Tommy Davis.
- 44:09Tommy Davis, first man retiring the side of the first inning up again.
- 44:14Two-seventy-five hitter and has 14 homers.
- 44:18One of them came in the first game of the series.
- 44:23On Friday night, he hit it way up into the seats in the left center.
- 44:27Here's the pitch from Bruce.
- 44:28Swung on and drive into center field.
- 44:30Back of it towards right center.
- 44:31Winn over and Rusty Stobb coming in, and it's going to be Rusty, I believe, in front of Jimmy Winn.
- 44:37And Rusty lost his cap, but he hangs on to that baseball.
- 44:41Almost colliding out there.
- 44:43Jim Winn and Rusty Stobb, two men are out.
- 44:46And John Roseborough.
- 44:49Well, the story, I guess, on center fielding is that you go get anything that you can get, roaming far and wide.
- 44:57And Rusty figuring, well, I just want to let anybody slip up out there, take any chances.
- 45:03No question about the improvement of Jimmy Winn and Rusty on the defensive out there.
- 45:10John Roseborough flying into right field in the second inning, left-hand batter.
- 45:14Bruce's pitch is high for ball one.
- 45:17Roseborough hitting at 283 this time around, and he has 42 runs batted in.
- 45:23Tommy's hit three homers.
- 45:25No score in the game.
- 45:27You've just dialed us in, and we're in the first of the fourth inning, and Bruce brings on the pitch.
- 45:31Swung on, fouled up and back.
- 45:33It's out of play.
- 45:35So the count is ball one and strike one.
- 45:39Team batting average for the Dodgers is 250, 250.
- 45:45And the opposing batsmen against their pitchers have hit 234.
- 45:52There's a change up, fouled off into the crowd to the left side.
- 45:57At that time, Roseborough got out a little early, committing himself, and then more or less following through.
- 46:04Ball one and strike two.
- 46:08the Houston third run average.
- 46:12He hit it way up into the seats in the left center.
- 46:14Here's the pitch, and Bruce swung on and drive into center field, back a bit towards right center.
- 46:19Winn over and Rusty Stobb coming in, and it's going to be Rusty, I believe, in front of Jimmy Winn.
- 46:25And Rusty lost his cap, but he hangs on to that baseball.
- 46:29Almost colliding out there.
- 46:31Jim Winn and Rusty Stobb, two men are out.
- 46:34And John Roseborough.
- 46:37Well, the story, I guess, on center fielding is that you go get anything that you can get, roaming far and wide.
- 46:45And Rusty, figuring, well, I just want to let anybody slip up out there, take any chances.
- 46:51No question about the improvement of Jimmy Winn and Rusty on the defensive out there.
- 46:58John Roseborough flying into right field in the second inning, left hand batter.
- 47:02Bruce Pitch is high for ball one.
- 47:04Roseborough hitting at 283 this time around, and he has 42 runs batted in.
- 47:11John has hit three homers.
- 47:13No score in the game.
- 47:15You just dial this in, and we're in the first of the fourth inning, and Bruce brings on the pitch.
- 47:19Swung on, fouled up and back.
- 47:21It's out of play.
- 47:23So the count is ball one and strike one.
- 47:27Team batting average for the Dodgers is 250, 250.
- 47:32And the opposing batsmen against their pitchers have hit 234.
- 47:40There's a change up, fouled off into the crowd to the left side.
- 47:44At that time, Roseborough got out a little early, committing himself and then more or less following through.
- 47:51Ball one and strike two.
- 47:56the Houston run average, the pitching staff, 3.38.
- 48:02the pitch, and it missed outside.
- 48:05Ball two and strike two.
- 48:06Of course, Gene has noted, and you've heard us refer to this fact many times, that the great improvement by Bruce in the low number of bases on balls,
- 48:15it's hard to believe he had walked just 31 batters in 190 and one-third innings.
- 48:21There's a foul, flipped off back a third into the crowd.
- 48:26So it's ball two and strike two.
- 48:31Bruce is allowed eight home runs, and with that easy, tantalizing, soft little motion up there, they go for a lot of his stuff.
- 48:40There's a foul as he swung on the breaking ball, hitting down around the knees.
- 48:46Ball two and strike two.
- 48:50Roseborough is 43 and 61 on bases on balls and strikeouts, 61 times he's struck out.
- 49:01So Bruce has struck out 133 batters on the season.
- 49:08And here's Bob Spich.
- 49:10Fastball swung on, back to the wire, foul ball, two-two.
- 49:15Two down and no one on base.
- 49:19No score on the game and just two hits thus far.
- 49:22Trzezinski's single as the lead batter in the left field in the first inning,
- 49:25and then Oliver on a very close call got a base hit infield single to beat short.
- 49:30That change swung on and fouled off to the left side.
- 49:34That was in tight against Roseborough.
- 49:37Bruce changed him up, and it's ball two and strike two.
- 49:48All right, again, look for the sign, he's ready.
- 49:51Around comes Yarm, the pitch, swung on, line out into left field,
- 49:55Spangler over there, out towards left center, not too deep, he's got it for the out.
- 50:00And that retires the Dodgers.
- 50:03So no runs, no hits, and no one left on.
- 50:06There were no errors, and the game moves to the last half of the fourth inning.
- 50:10It's Houston nothing and the Los Angeles Dodgers nothing.
- 50:14Years ago when Lucky Strike set out to make their first cigarette,
- 50:18they set their sights on this, taste, and taste is just what they got.
- 50:23Today it's still the Lucky Strike story in one word.
- 50:26the reason? Fine tobacco.
- 50:29Fine tobacco blended from one end of a lucky to the other.
- 50:32LSMFT.
- 50:34Lucky Strike means fine tobacco, and you know what that means,
- 50:38great taste every time you light up, taste that's rich and full.
- 50:42If you smoke for taste, taste fine tobacco at its best.
- 50:46Smoke a Lucky Strike.
- 50:48Yes, lucky strike, another favorite.
- 51:16Yes, lucky strike, another fine product from the American Tobacco Company.
- 51:26Last half of inning number four.
- 51:29We've got a new leader in the National League right now.
- 51:32Cincinnati has won its first game, and Philadelphia lost its game to Milwaukee.
- 51:40So Cincinnati has vaulted into first place in an almost unbelievable rally,
- 51:46and have won eight straight ball games.
- 51:48That's a new mark in the National League for consecutive wins this year.
- 51:52Six was the former high.
- 51:54Here's Rysdale pitching to Spangler.
- 51:56Ball on the outside.
- 51:58Spangler bound at 5-3, third to first his first time up.
- 52:01Cincinnati has jumped out in front in the second game against the Mets,
- 52:05scoring three runs in the top half of the first inning.
- 52:08That's keeping you posted right up to the second.
- 52:10Three-nothing Cincinnati with the Mets now coming to bat in the last half of the first inning.
- 52:15A new leader, Cincinnati, and the Cardinals are moving in.
- 52:19All right, the pitch.
- 52:21Chain's long on, clipped out to the left side.
- 52:23Trzyski, that's short, little looper, is there and takes it for the up.
- 52:28Spangler, off balance on the swing, little change up on him, I guess.
- 52:33And here's Joe Morgan.
- 52:35Grounded out second to first his first time up.
- 52:37Morgan has one hit since joining the 45s, but he's a better hitter than that, believe me.
- 52:45Cincinnati won its first game from the Mets 4-1, 0-2, making it 17-7 on the season.
- 52:51Stallard was the losing pitcher.
- 52:54In rides the pitch, Morgan takes low, noting that Joe Morgan,
- 53:01having been to bat 18 times to start this game and walked six times,
- 53:08St. Louis is leading 3-0 over the Pittsburgh Pirates, Pirates batting in the eighth inning.
- 53:13Drysdale-Wines delivers in tight against Morgan, he skips the back, ball two in those strikes.
- 53:20Well, the St. Louis Cardinals also with an opportunity for just a game and a half out today.
- 53:31In tight to Morgan, ball three in those strikes.
- 53:35So St. Louis, if they can win, will be just the one-half game back of Cincinnati.
- 53:44the Giants also with an opportunity, but they lost their first game.
- 53:48Three strike, three balls and one strike to Joe Morgan.
- 53:52No score in this ball game, last half of the fourth inning, one out.
- 53:55Houston batting with no one on base.
- 53:59And Drysdale pumps and throws, swung on, a looper going into shallow center, coming in Willie Davis now,
- 54:04and he's there, loves it for the out, it's two away.
- 54:10Willie can really cover the territory, moving back to the left and right and coming in.
- 54:15Rusty Stubb, and if you were here, what had happened, you'll never forget,
- 54:21and if you were listening, perhaps you'll never forget,
- 54:24the first home run Rusty Stubb ever got in the big leagues was off this big right-hander, Don Drysdale, last year,
- 54:31and it was at deep into the right of straightaway center, the pitch, high for ball one.
- 54:39Rusty popped out to first base in the first inning today.
- 54:4432 runs batted in for the redhead, the pitch, Stubb takes in there for strike call, one ball and one strike.
- 54:52Drysdale with that sort of a whiplash delivery, it's hard to pick up the flight of the ball, gets in on you.
- 55:01Rocks back and delivery, swung on, popped up.
- 55:04This is back of the plate, Roseberg off with a mass following back now.
- 55:08He's under it, and Roseberg grabs it for the foot out.
- 55:11Boy, this game is moving along, Houston here, no runs, no hits.
- 55:15None left on, and there were no errors.
- 55:18Well, at the end of four innings of play, Los Angeles nothing, and Houston nothing.
- 55:25Well, in a few short days, the 1964 baseball season will be over,
- 55:30and we'd like to say we've enjoyed entertaining those of you who were winners of our various contests throughout the season,
- 55:38and our thanks to Trans-Texas Airways with its new radar-smooth conveyors and extended time-saving schedules
- 55:47for helping us make your trips here more enjoyable,
- 55:50and to the world-famous Shamrock-Hilson Hotel for the wonderful accommodations our guests enjoyed.
- 55:56A special congratulations goes out to our grand prize winners,
- 56:00who will soon be winging their way to the New York World's Fair aboard American Airlines, route to the Astrojets,
- 56:07and to all of our listeners.
- 56:09Be sure to join us daily for 1964 and next year,
- 56:13when we will originate from our palatial new home in the fabulous Dome Stadium.
- 56:19A lot of people around here today, in fact, every day, everywhere, talking about the Dome Stadium.
- 56:29Ron Fairley, first baseman for the Dodgers, will lead off.
- 56:32He struck out swinging in the second inning.
- 56:36And here's Bob Bruce with the rock back on the mound, the pitch, and it's in there for a strike call.
- 56:42Tony Vinson calling him back to play today.
- 56:45An almost unbelievable finish here, believe me, in this National League this season.
- 56:51We've had some great and exciting finishes, haven't we?
- 56:53But this is going to top them all, it looks like.
- 56:55There's a drive bounding down to Bond. He doesn't come up with it.
- 56:58It was down just between his shoes, and then Arab Bond.
- 57:02He just had to make a couple of three little strides to his right, and it was going to pump it underhand over to Bruce covering it first, I suppose.
- 57:09But he did not come up with the ball, look back, and couldn't fetch it in time.
- 57:13Second baseman, number 29, Nate Oliver.
- 57:17So there's the first error of the ballgame, and the lead batter is on.
- 57:21Fairley at first, and here is Nate Oliver.
- 57:23Oliver, on a question play there at second base, was first chalked up as an error,
- 57:31and then later reversed, scored as a base hit on the infield, with Casco driving back hard to his right
- 57:38on a bounder that in his backhand a try went off with a glove and skipped a power off the shoulder.
- 57:43Here's the bunk off to the right side, and Bond will go back to Morgan at first base covering.
- 57:48the sacrifice is okay.
- 57:51So with the man at second now fairly sacrificed along, it's won out, and Bart Shirley is the batter.
- 57:59Shirley was hitting at a clip of 3.06 coming into the ballgame, was dropped to 2.97,
- 58:05of course has not been up very many times, 37 times at bat, and has 11 hits.
- 58:11Right end batter.
- 58:15Bart Shirley out of the University of Texas and received an award as the minor league Texas ballplayer
- 58:23who was most likely to succeed as a major leaguer.
- 58:27And here he is being given a good try by the Los Angeles Dodgers, the defending world's champions.
- 58:37Bob Bruce looks in there.
- 58:39Runner at second. No score, but the Dodgers threaten here with one out.
- 58:43And a pitch. In tight.
- 58:48Bob saw the pitch around him a little bit.
- 58:56And Bruce, with the pressure on, the infield of course having to be concerned with the batter,
- 59:04with no one on at first base, one out.
- 59:06the runner leads off at second, a pitch, and a swung on hit deep into left center field.
- 59:10Wynn goes back. Wynn fading away back there.
- 59:12He's under it, and he grabs it off for the put out.
- 59:15Jimmy got a good jump on the ball at the crack of the bat and made it look relatively easy.
- 59:21Of course you've got to make that play any day, all the way in the big leagues.
- 59:27And here's Don Grisdell with two men out.
- 59:33Grisdell bounced by three his first time up.
- 59:39So now Cincinnati has won 90 games and lost 66, and Philadelphia has won 90 games and lost 67.
- 59:46Cincinnati is on its way to another victory in a double dip up at Shea Stadium in New York today.
- 59:58the wind is blowing straight in right at the moment, as indicated by the flags at center field.
- 1:00:03And a pitch. So Grisdell is high.
- 1:00:06Ball one.
- 1:00:10That's right, if you were not tuned in, we gave that final score.
- 1:00:13Milwaukee, Clover, Philadelphia 14 to 8.
- 1:00:19Callison got three homers all in vain.
- 1:00:24We'll have a few sprinkles and we'll tiptoe around and through this one today.
- 1:00:32Weatherman's being real nice to us today. We had some very ominous clouds out there.
- 1:00:40Rowing and causing it up. There's a ball going on past the middle of Grady on a high fastball delivery.
- 1:00:47And advancing to third, run fairly.
- 1:00:49Followed a wild pitch.
- 1:00:53Wild pitch, Bruce.
- 1:00:55Fairly advancing to third, the count goes ball two and strike one with two out.
- 1:01:01No score in the ballgame. Grisdell.
- 1:01:04Batting average of 178.
- 1:01:11Grisdell is one real fine competitor and a good attitude, of course.
- 1:01:17To a great extent, that is a part of success.
- 1:01:21This is a game of baseball, a pitch, and it drops a lot away.
- 1:01:25Bragging stuff, sliding off it. If there's ball three and strike one, just a few more raindrops.
- 1:01:32But not too many people stirring right at this moment. A lot of umbrellas out, though.
- 1:01:40Bob Bruce ready.
- 1:01:42And the pitch. And it missed high. Ball four.
- 1:01:46And Bruce has given up a base on balls to Don Grisdell, the first free ticket off Bob Bruce today.
- 1:01:54Thirty-two bases on balls for the season.
- 1:01:57And the second is for Tim Trzucski.
- 1:02:02Tim Trzucski, the shortstop, who has one of the two hits allowed by Bob Bruce, is the batter.
- 1:02:06the right-hand batter is Trzucski, and he has a 252 batting average.
- 1:02:12Nothing and nothing now with runners at third and first, two men are out.
- 1:02:17Bob Bruce giving up the first walk in 14 innings to Grisdell, who leads off at first.
- 1:02:21Fairly third. the pitch swung on and missed.
- 1:02:24Bruce over the top and bowing right through to follow through on that delivery.
- 1:02:30Trzucski popped a short after he's singled. So he's one for two today.
- 1:02:36Pitch swung on, hit down to the left side to short. Ground ball scooped up by Casco.
- 1:02:40Pitch at the Morgan. Force play on Grisdell.
- 1:02:43A nice play. You've got to make that one.
- 1:02:46No runs, no hits, and two left on. It was one error.
- 1:02:51We move into the last of the fifth inning. It's Houston nothing and Los Angeles nothing.
- 1:02:58Well, Don Grisdell back on the mound getting warm up for those last of the fifth inning coming around.
- 1:03:04And he'll be facing Walter Bond, Bob Aspermati, and Jimmy Wern.
- 1:03:09Nothing and nothing. Two hits in the ball game, both by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 1:03:14Walter Bond up there now, big left hand batter, and swings and nubs one down softly to the first baseman Fairly.
- 1:03:20Steps on first, and it's one away. Unassisted put out.
- 1:03:25Chicago got four runs on. the Ernie Banks slammed there in the fifth inning.
- 1:03:29And the Cubs lead the Giants four nothing through five innings of that second game of the double header.
- 1:03:35Chicago won the first game off the Giants. Four and one was the final score.
- 1:03:39Oh boy, the Giants had visions of sugar plum fairies or something up there when they were playing today
- 1:03:45to start their double header only three games back of Philadelphia.
- 1:03:50Aspermati moves out on that high inside fast one, ball one.
- 1:03:55Bond rounded short to first his first time up today.
- 1:03:59Within the opening lineup, first game ever for the 45s in Coe Stadium.
- 1:04:05Came up with three hits, had the first hit as a Coe 45.
- 1:04:10Here's the pitch. Swung on and wrapped into left field not too late.
- 1:04:15Tommy Davis up with that glove, just almost standing in his tracks, has got it.
- 1:04:19And it's two away.
- 1:04:21So in the last half of the fifth inning, two men were down, no one on base, and Jimmy Wernherst the batter.
- 1:04:28One punch, one fairly deep into left field, taken by Tommy Davis in the second inning.
- 1:04:33Well, we were mixing them up now on ground balls and fly balls.
- 1:04:38Drysdale has not featured a strikeout pitch at all here today.
- 1:04:43He has not walked a man. He has not struck out a batter.
- 1:04:47Jimmy Wern, who has a two, 14 batting average,
- 1:04:52coming up out around and here's the pitch to him, strike call, right in and over.
- 1:04:59Wern has four homers, six doubles, and 14 RBIs.
- 1:05:06Jim has now been up 192 times as a 45 this year, the pitch.
- 1:05:10And that's a fastball over.
- 1:05:14Talking about Drysdale has improved his mark over the overall mark of last year in the pennant winning and championship year.
- 1:05:22Drysdale has a 2.19 earned run average.
- 1:05:27Last year he had 263 on the season.
- 1:05:29the pitch has a check swing, a ball breaking low on the outside.
- 1:05:34And so the county is ball one and strike two, two down.
- 1:05:39No score in this ball game.
- 1:05:44Drysdale pumps the new ball this time.
- 1:05:48So Don Drysdale, who last year had a record of 19 wins and 17 losses, is 18 against 15 losses this year.
- 1:05:57the pitch high, pop-down. Man, this is a mile up into the crowd off third base side.
- 1:06:04the county will hold at ball one and strike two.
- 1:06:11But we have a new leader in the National League, and it's Cincinnati,
- 1:06:17which won its seventh consecutive ball game when they polished off the mess the first game of the doubleheader today.
- 1:06:22Here's the next pitch now, and just a shade off the strike zone.
- 1:06:26Ball two and strike two.
- 1:06:29Everybody started to leave the scene there for the Dodgers on the infield.
- 1:06:34It was that close, in other words.
- 1:06:41And Cincinnati is leading over New York, 3-0 the second inning of the second game.
- 1:06:46Winn swings and fouls back the wire.
- 1:06:50Jimmy trying to put us on the scoreboard up there.
- 1:06:54Nothing and nothing right now. Two hits and the Dodgers have them both.
- 1:07:00This is the final, of course, and everybody knows it as far as the home games are concerned this year.
- 1:07:07And we'll move into San Francisco Tuesday night.
- 1:07:10And that's breaking stuff low and away.
- 1:07:14This portion of our play-by-play being sent to you by the Pearl Brewing Company of San Antonio.
- 1:07:21Enjoy a cold pearl beer.
- 1:07:24It's brewed with that famous spring water from the country of you-know-where.
- 1:07:29Right.
- 1:07:31Jimmy one now with a three-two. Here it is. On the way.
- 1:07:34Hello, ball four. He locked in.
- 1:07:37There goes a perfect ball game, and we get a base runner.
- 1:07:41How do you like those apples?
- 1:07:45Drysdale has given up his 63rd base on balls of the season.
- 1:07:51And let's see, 303 innings, four, five, six, seven, 308 innings and a third.
- 1:07:59He has worked so far this year. And that was his 63rd base on balls.
- 1:08:03Here's Eddie Cascaw, who grounded short first his first time.
- 1:08:07Drysdale a glance over the shoulder and does a bouncer.
- 1:08:11the outside edge of the play for one.
- 1:08:15Drysdale crossing them, mixing them up in there.
- 1:08:19There's not a lot of base here.
- 1:08:21And this is the first base runner that we have managed.
- 1:08:25As Wynn threw out her three-two for a base on balls.
- 1:08:30And big down Drysdale is all set.
- 1:08:33Here's Wynn breaking on the pitch, the pitch out.
- 1:08:35the pitch goes down to second. Wynn slides. He's out.
- 1:08:38Wynn was trying to sort of swing around outside slide.
- 1:08:41And Nate Oliver in there took the throw on the pitch out.
- 1:08:44They had his number and tagged him out of there.
- 1:08:47So making two-four to score long on the put-on.
- 1:08:50And for Houston, no runs, no hits. None left. There were no errors.
- 1:08:54At the end of five complete innings, it's Los Angeles nothing and Houston nothing.
- 1:09:02Here's the left-hand batter, Darrell Griffith leading off from the Dodgers.
- 1:09:06And right-hander Gross ready to feed in the first one.
- 1:09:09Here comes Swinart and Mist, strike one.
- 1:09:16Mr. George, it's precipitating just slightly there.
- 1:09:24Here's Gross with the up. the pitch is hit down to the right side.
- 1:09:27the ground ball, Morgan's got it. Feeds it back to Bob.
- 1:09:29It first got him.
- 1:09:32So Griffith's bounce, 4-3 on Morgan at the edge of the outfield grass back to the boundary.
- 1:09:384-3. George Ferguson of the Vysorsport Facts just walked in to say hello.
- 1:09:45And out of the good area down there, Freeport and Vysorsport and Clute and all through there,
- 1:09:52you read his fine sports coverage.
- 1:09:56Well, there's the left-hander batter. Swings on the changeup and fouls it off.
- 1:10:00Here's the slice-stepping on the top side for strike one.
- 1:10:04Davis has popped a third and struck out swinging.
- 1:10:06Bruce has recorded four strikeouts here today.
- 1:10:09And we have a 0-0 battle and two hits in the game.
- 1:10:13the Dodgers have both those.
- 1:10:15Bruce's pitch, swing on, high one, fouled off back of the right-field line.
- 1:10:21Way back up in there for the souvenir.
- 1:10:24I would say we've got around 7-8,000 people or so here in spite of the threatening weather.
- 1:10:32Tommy Davis is on deck.
- 1:10:34Willie Davis at 2-94 batting average.
- 1:10:38Pitch, a little number foul off to the right of the plate.
- 1:10:43Got that one on the top side.
- 1:10:45Bruce backing down there for them.
- 1:10:48Bruce gives you that tantalizing slow motion, soft and fluffy like, you know, those popcorn up there.
- 1:10:55You've got to watch him.
- 1:10:57And then he'll turn that fastball loose on you.
- 1:11:00So you've got to be ready for most anything.
- 1:11:041-2, one out, Dodgers batting and no one on base.
- 1:11:07We're in the top of the sixth inning, scoreless.
- 1:11:11But there were some scores over there in that Milwaukee-Philadelphia game.
- 1:11:1522 runs, a swing way up there on your best strike three.
- 1:11:20That was up over the head almost.
- 1:11:23And Bruce recovers his first strikeout.
- 1:11:28Well, he breezed him out of there.
- 1:11:31And he gives Bruce 134 strikeouts for the season with two down against Tommy Davis.
- 1:11:39And Tommy's batting average is 274, 84 runs batted in.
- 1:11:48Right in better up there.
- 1:11:51Bruce got two out now in the top of sixth inning, no score in this ballgame.
- 1:11:55Bob wants another sign and okays it.
- 1:12:01Now he goes into the pump, rocks back, and here's the pitch.
- 1:12:07Missing just a little off the track down, ball on.
- 1:12:12Those ball would be the next batter.
- 1:12:17All right, Bruce, who's an easygoing right-hander on the mound, plenty of time he takes.
- 1:12:23Golovitz, swing on, drive into the field.
- 1:12:26Spangler goes back, a goal is pretty well tagged.
- 1:12:29Glenn, open arms, stretching well with the drive now on his guard.
- 1:12:32Glenn coming from the center over to the left side, hauls it in.
- 1:12:35And Spangler backed off that fly.
- 1:12:37No runs, no hits, no enough to board, and there were no errors.
- 1:12:41We move on to the last half of the sixth inning, the score.
- 1:12:44It's no score.
- 1:12:45Houston nothing, Los Angeles nothing.
- 1:12:47Let's welcome here this afternoon.
- 1:12:49If you're the kind of man who likes a simple life, an outdoor vacation with the kids and the wife, a hunt or a fishing trip, you like that kind of thing.
- 1:13:06You like the beer from the country of 1100 springs.
- 1:13:11Let's have a pearl beer, pearl's the beer that brings refreshments from the country of 1100 springs.
- 1:13:24So let's have a cold pearl beer.
- 1:13:28Pearl is better beer because it's brewed with famous spring water from the country of 1100 springs.
- 1:13:35Refreshments from the country of 1100 springs.
- 1:13:44So let's have a cold pearl beer.
- 1:13:54Well, I'll say one thing here at Coast Stadium today.
- 1:13:56For the Winder Upper, as far as NASA League regularly scheduled based on Coast Stadium,
- 1:14:01we've got one humbinger of a pitching duel, nothing and nothing.
- 1:14:07Going to the last of the sixth inning and Eddie Kessco leads off for the 45s.
- 1:14:11Brody and Brewster follow.
- 1:14:13Drysdale and Brewster hooked up in the duel.
- 1:14:16the only two hits gotten today, Trzyskij single to left and Oliver single in the hole, deep short.
- 1:14:22Drysdale ready to pump and grow to Eddie Kessco.
- 1:14:26This is just his second appearance.
- 1:14:28There's a bounder down to short.
- 1:14:30Trzyskij and scoops and throws over and boy, he looks Jim Dandy out there at short, doesn't he?
- 1:14:35One down.
- 1:14:37Jerry Grote the batter.
- 1:14:38He's flying to right field his first time.
- 1:14:40And a pitch.
- 1:14:42Swung on.
- 1:14:43There's a broken back down to the right side.
- 1:14:44Second baseman made out of a humbinger.
- 1:14:46He can't come up with it.
- 1:14:49Double down to the right side of the carpet and they call it error four.
- 1:14:54And Grote is aboard.
- 1:14:56And we might see a little bit of sacrifice funding here.
- 1:15:01It's an amazing reduction, isn't it?
- 1:15:04Al Spangler moves out on deck.
- 1:15:08Third baseman Griffith over to the mound.
- 1:15:13And to play this, he's going to cover what spot of territory right in there and how and so on.
- 1:15:20And fairly holds against Brody at first.
- 1:15:25This is just our second baserunner, mind you.
- 1:15:30And the delivery is low.
- 1:15:33Fairly charging in down from first.
- 1:15:36We have not had a man stranded on base, as a matter of fact, to show you the effectiveness of Drysdale so far this afternoon.
- 1:15:49He's done.
- 1:15:50Ready.
- 1:15:51Third baseman coming down the grass.
- 1:15:52the pitch is low and it's ball two.
- 1:15:55First round at 5-3 in the third inning this first time.
- 1:15:59And looking down to Busby coaching up at third, what will it do?
- 1:16:04And I imagine that Luman is bouncing the signal off Buster there.
- 1:16:09Of course, the dares are coached first.
- 1:16:12And coaching Brody who edges away.
- 1:16:14the pitch is bonded on and missed and it's ball two and strike one.
- 1:16:18Bruce tried to get right on top of the ball and get it out there and put a little deadening on it, I guess.
- 1:16:27Couldn't make contact.
- 1:16:28Ball two and strike one with one out.
- 1:16:32Bruce overall in the season has 11 hits and 60 times at bat.
- 1:16:36One of them has been a double and he has one run batted in.
- 1:16:41That double was right here, wasn't it?
- 1:16:43Down that right field line.
- 1:16:46Two balls, one strike.
- 1:16:47First one out, no score.
- 1:16:49We're in the last half of the sixth inning.
- 1:16:50Brody edges off at first.
- 1:16:52Drysdale comes to the plate and it's sort of a half-chopping swing.
- 1:16:57He had a bun position with the bat and then sort of took a stiff arm swing into ball, two-two.
- 1:17:08It appears that Bruce was trying to line one over the third baseman's head there.
- 1:17:16Darryl Griffith.
- 1:17:21Boy, the weather's turned off just beautiful here, hasn't it?
- 1:17:24Sort of air conditioned like we expect from the Dome Stadium.
- 1:17:27Two-two.
- 1:17:28Here's the pitch.
- 1:17:29the ball is bunned on and missed and it's strike three and Bruce is out.
- 1:17:34Holding at first base is Jerry Grohle.
- 1:17:36That'll bring on Spangler who has bounded five-three and has popped out the short.
- 1:17:41Al Spangler.
- 1:17:42We have not been able to get a base hit off Don Drysdale.
- 1:17:49And the Dodgers have had just two hits off Bob Bruce to show you what kind of pitching we're getting here this afternoon.
- 1:17:54But we've had, as we think back, a lot of well-pitched games in this stadium, haven't we?
- 1:18:00All three years.
- 1:18:01Some beautifully-pitched games.
- 1:18:04Drysdale to the Rosenbach.
- 1:18:07Al Spangler with a 2.47 batting average has 36 runs batted in and the extra base total 18 doubles, five triples and four homers.
- 1:18:15Drysdale off of the stretch of the pitch.
- 1:18:17Spong on.
- 1:18:18There's a line in the center field.
- 1:18:20They've got Joe up to the second and holds on there.
- 1:18:23Spangler gets the first hit of the ball game off Don Drysdale.
- 1:18:28And it brings up little Joe Morgan.
- 1:18:31So another left-hander to face right-handed Don Drysdale.
- 1:18:36And this right-hander has been quite troublesome to the hitters with all kinds of breaking stuff and a motion that's very difficult to pick the flattest ball up easily on.
- 1:18:48And he's got a good fast ball.
- 1:18:51He can mix that in with him, you know, all those breaking stuff.
- 1:18:56Brody in second and Spangler at first.
- 1:18:58Morgan, who has grabbed it out and flied out, touches in on that plate in the batting stance.
- 1:19:04And Drysdale pumps and he's ready to pitch down to little Joe.
- 1:19:08A strike call.
- 1:19:13Morgan has been about 20 times and has six bases on balls.
- 1:19:21He's looking for his second hit.
- 1:19:24And he's wrapped the ball very sharply on several occasions.
- 1:19:29They have swung to right on the defensive infield and outfield. Runners at second and first, two down.
- 1:19:350-1 count the pitch.
- 1:19:36Low ball, one and strike one.
- 1:19:39Morgan guards in on that plate.
- 1:19:44Drysdale with a very fabulous earned one average, especially when you consider the number of innings he has pitched.
- 1:19:532.19 earned one average in 303 and two-thirds innings going in today.
- 1:20:00Willard Davis is going to get sunshades, I guess.
- 1:20:04the sun is breaking through now and all the boys who figure in the sun field wanting the shades because the back sunshine suddenly breaks through here.
- 1:20:16We've had overcast and some sprinkling, a little bit of precipitation.
- 1:20:22Now, no score battle.
- 1:20:24Fine pitching for two right-handers, Don Drysdale and Bob Bruce.
- 1:20:28Sunshades are being given to four of them.
- 1:20:31Trzewski from short, Nate Oliver at second, center fielder Willie Davis and the right fielder, Darryl Griffith.
- 1:20:40That was the calls for the little break here.
- 1:20:43the count is ball one and strike one.
- 1:20:46And Morgan is back to the plate.
- 1:20:48Little Joe, go to the runner at second and Sprangler leads off at first.
- 1:20:55And here's Drysdale all set now, the stretch.
- 1:20:58the big right-hander pumps, the pitch down.
- 1:21:00Morgan takes inside.
- 1:21:02Ball two and strike one.
- 1:21:06I like his reflexes and I know you do too.
- 1:21:08You've seen him up bat fans.
- 1:21:11Joe Farrows, he's aggressive and for that reason he might occasionally go for a pitch.
- 1:21:18Morgan now waiting as Drysdale comes down with the pitch and it's swung on
- 1:21:22and Roller goes down to the first baseman.
- 1:21:24Fail has got it.
- 1:21:25A little hopper and he takes for the putout, stepping on first, an unassisted putout.
- 1:21:30No runs, one hit, two left.
- 1:21:33There was one error.
- 1:21:35And at the end of six innings of play, it's Houston nothing.
- 1:21:40At Los Angeles nothing.
- 1:21:43Well, we've had six innings of this ballgame down in the books.
- 1:21:47And moving to inning number seven, Houston nothing, the Dodgers nothing.
- 1:21:50And here again is Gene Elston.
- 1:21:54Thank you very much now as we move on to the seventh inning in a real fine ballgame out here today.
- 1:21:59No score.
- 1:22:00We've had only three hits so far.
- 1:22:02And here's the first pitch to John Roseborough.
- 1:22:04There's a swing and a miss and it's strike one.
- 1:22:08Roseborough has been up twice and both times he has flied out.
- 1:22:12He'll be followed by Ron Fairley and then Nate Oliver.
- 1:22:16Nobody out, nobody on base.
- 1:22:18Here's the windup by Bruce.
- 1:22:19Next pitch into Roseborough and he takes a strike on the inside corner of the knees and it's 0-2.
- 1:22:25Total attendance today is 8,186, 8186 total crowd and the official paid is 6,246, 6-2, 4-6 the paid crowd.
- 1:22:38Low inside pitch to Roseborough and it's one ball and two strikes.
- 1:22:42Rose now through six innings has given up only two hits, a single by Trudewski in the first and a single by Oliver in the second.
- 1:22:50He has walked only one and he has struck out five betters.
- 1:22:53He has also fired a wild pitch.
- 1:22:55No score, seventh inning.
- 1:22:57Here's the one and two pitch to Roseborough.
- 1:22:59Pop-up, foul off the right side.
- 1:23:01Bond and Grote both coming over for it now.
- 1:23:04Bond by the dugout.
- 1:23:05Watch out, Oliver, almost went down in there.
- 1:23:07He got it and there's one down.
- 1:23:09So Bond on the top of the dugout reaches in to grab that one and there's one down.
- 1:23:14So Roseborough has fouled out to first and here's the first baseman, Ron Fairley.
- 1:23:19Cardinals beat Pittsburgh, five to nothing.
- 1:23:22It was a six-hit shutout by Roger Craig and St. Louis is a game out of first.
- 1:23:29How about that one for a race?
- 1:23:31Cincinnati first, Philadelphia second, a half out and the Cardinals a game out.
- 1:23:35There's a strike to Fairley around the belt.
- 1:23:38Closing pitcher was Vernon Law as the Cardinals won their fifth game in a row, five to nothing over Pittsburgh.
- 1:23:44No home runs in that game.
- 1:23:47One strike on Fairley.
- 1:23:48He has struck out and was safe on an error.
- 1:23:50Curve strike, oh that was a beauty right in there and it's 0-2 now.
- 1:23:54Second baseman, Nate Oliver, will be up next.
- 1:23:58This ball game is nothing and nothing.
- 1:24:00Time for the seventh, one out, nobody on base.
- 1:24:04And a two-strike count on left-handed batter Ron Fairley.
- 1:24:07Here's the pitch, fastball.
- 1:24:08That's popped up down the left-field line.
- 1:24:10Asperavani and foul territory for it.
- 1:24:12Shades that sunshine from his eyes.
- 1:24:14He's got it and they're two men out.
- 1:24:16So both batters here to open the seventh, Roseboro and Fairley have fouled out.
- 1:24:21And that will bring up the second baseman, Nate Oliver.
- 1:24:24Second baseman, number 29, Nate Oliver.
- 1:24:26Oliver has singled and sacrificed.
- 1:24:28He had an infield hit to shortstop.
- 1:24:31And then butted up Fairley who was safe on Bonds' error in the fifth inning.
- 1:24:36Right-handed batter, two outs, nobody on base.
- 1:24:38And Bruce's first pitch is a little bit inside for ball one, one to nothing.
- 1:24:42One ball, no strikes.
- 1:24:44Bruce in one stage today, retired seven batters in a row.
- 1:24:48And Drysdale, before he gave up a walk to win, had put down 14 consecutive Houston batters.
- 1:24:55Ball low outside and then of course, Spangler got that base hit.
- 1:24:58the only one off Drysdale so far in the sixth.
- 1:25:00Two outs, nobody on base, top of the seventh.
- 1:25:03And as Lowell mentioned, we're getting sunshine here in Outgold Stadium.
- 1:25:06Here's the windup and the pitch on the way.
- 1:25:07And there's a fly ball back in the center field.
- 1:25:09Jimmy Wynn down to the sunshades on this one.
- 1:25:11He's under it.
- 1:25:12And he's got it and that retires the side.
- 1:25:15That's seven batters in a row again now, but Bruce is retired as Oliver ends the seventh inning by flying to Jimmy Wynn.
- 1:25:21No runs, no hits, no errors and nobody left on base.
- 1:25:24Our ball game moves to the last half of the seventh with the score Houston nothing, Los Angeles nothing.
- 1:25:31In every glass of Pearl beer, the grains and hops have to be the best.
- 1:25:36Ripened in the sun, chosen to measure up to the Pearl beer formula, which has been perfecting now for 75 years and more.
- 1:25:45Then comes the water.
- 1:25:47And when you get down to the water, either you have it or you haven't.
- 1:25:52Pearl beer has it, the best brewing water in this part of the world.
- 1:25:57Pure spring water from the country of 1100 springs.
- 1:26:02the Frio, Medina, Sabinal and Nueces run swift and bright and then disappear underground into the limestone.
- 1:26:12Patiently it filters for a hundred miles to the artesian wells at the Pearl Brewery.
- 1:26:17This water brings out all the flavor of premium grains and hops.
- 1:26:22You can taste the difference perfect brewing water makes every time you have a cold Pearl beer from the country of 1100 springs.
- 1:26:31Bottom half of the seventh inning now and Rusty Staub, Wal Bond and Bob Aspermati will be leading off here against Don Drysdale.
- 1:26:42Let's pause for station identification. This is the cold 45s baseball network.
- 1:26:47Rhymesdale all set to pitch to Staub. Now Rusty has popped out and fouled out his first two times up here this afternoon left handed batter.
- 1:27:06Drysdale's first pitch to Rusty, high fastball ball one.
- 1:27:10At the end of three innings at Shea Stadium, Cincinnati three, New York nothing.
- 1:27:15Reds won the first game four to one.
- 1:27:19Phillies lost to the Braves 14 to eight and the Cardinals defeated Pittsburgh five to nothing.
- 1:27:28Nate Oliver getting some sunglasses at second base.
- 1:27:31So Cincinnati has gone into first place in the National League by half a game over Philadelphia and St. Louis is in third place just a game out.
- 1:27:41Yankees lost and Baltimore won today and the White Sox are winning.
- 1:27:46So the Yankees lost a game on their American League League their first three games out in front of Baltimore and the White Sox appear to be having no trouble with Kansas City today.
- 1:27:55So they probably will stay three games behind, pick up a full game on the Yankees also.
- 1:27:59Here's the one and all pitch now to Rusty and Staub hits a fly ball to set left center field.
- 1:28:04the left fielder Tommy Davis is over for this one and he holds it in for the first out.
- 1:28:09So starved his fly the left center to open the seventh inning and that will bring up Houston's first baseman Walter Bond.
- 1:28:17Chicago for San Francisco to with the Cubs batting in the bottom of the seventh.
- 1:28:22Lowell told you that Ernie Banks had a grand slam.
- 1:28:24That incidentally is the tenth grand slam of Ernie Banks career and not too many ballplayers get into the double figures on those.
- 1:28:34Number 10 for Banks and the Cubs won the first game four to one.
- 1:28:40Giants losing a lot of valuable ground in the National League today.
- 1:28:43Walt hits a high pop on the left side and Dick Truszewski now the third baseman Bart Shirley on the outfield grass two down.
- 1:28:50Awfully a lot of pop outs off of Drysdale today.
- 1:28:53So Bond is up three times without a hit as he pops out to Bart Shirley two away and here's Bob Espramonte.
- 1:29:00Espramonte is over two he's grounded out and flat out.
- 1:29:10Espramonte right handed batter no score here in the last half of the seventh inning.
- 1:29:16Drysdale has given up one hit a sixth inning single by Al Spangler has struck out only one batter today.
- 1:29:23He caught Bruce looking in the sixth and has given up only one base on balls.
- 1:29:28Drysdale retired the first 14 men to face him before he walked win in the fifth he was cut down trying to steal.
- 1:29:34And then Grote reached on an error by Oliver at second in the sixth and the same inning Spangler single.
- 1:29:39Asprow looks at the strike up around the letters and it's strike one.
- 1:29:44Two outs and nobody on seventh inning.
- 1:29:47Houston and Los Angeles are scoreless.
- 1:29:49Drysdale throws to Asprow again now and he swings and misses that one and Drysdale gets out in front of him with two strikes.
- 1:29:56White Sox five and Kansas City one at the end of four innings of their game.
- 1:30:03Joe Harlan started Blue Moon Odom started but was taken out in the second for Kansas City when the White Sox scored four runs.
- 1:30:09Here's the two strike pitch to Espramonte swinging a miss and he's struck him out retired aside.
- 1:30:13That's the second strike out for Drysdale three up and three down for Houston here in the seventh inning.
- 1:30:18No runs no hits no errors and nobody left on base.
- 1:30:21And at the end of seven innings of play Stildo scored the Dodgers nothing and McCole forty five nothing.
- 1:30:27Pearl beer is brewed with the finest blends and hops.
- 1:30:32And to be quite honest any other brewer in America who wanted to could use essentially the same fine ingredients.
- 1:30:40But when it comes to the all important ingredient water a brewer must use what he has at hand.
- 1:30:46And that's what gives Pearl beer its unique advantage and its marvelously refreshing quality.
- 1:30:52So underneath the Pearl Brewery are Pearl's famous Artesian Wells whose water comes pure and clear from the country of eleven hundred springs.
- 1:31:03Let's have a Pearl beer, Pearl's the beer that brings a freshman from the country of eleven hundred springs. So let's have a Pearl beer.
- 1:31:18A new convenient way to enjoy Pearl is in the glass bottle you don't take back.
- 1:31:24Pure's more beer in less space and pure glass protects natural beer flavor.
- 1:31:29Have a cold Pearl beer. Oh I was just checking here I think a very interesting note at this stage since this is the final game that we'll be playing here at Cold Stadium.
- 1:31:38In three years going into our final game today the cold forty fives are only nine games under five hundred against National League competition here at Cold Stadium.
- 1:31:48Houston has won a hundred and sixteen games and has lost a hundred and twenty five in this ballpark.
- 1:31:53Here's the first pitch now to Bart Shirley the third baseman and he takes a strike.
- 1:31:59We were seventy six wins eighty five losses going into this year and starting this game we are forty forty here at Cold Stadium.
- 1:32:07One strike to count on Shirley here's the pitch by Bruce it's high and it's one ball one strike.
- 1:32:12Shirley was safe in the fielder's choice in the second flight out in the fifth inning to center field he is 0 for 2.
- 1:32:18No score and only three hits the Dodgers have picked up two of the three.
- 1:32:23Shirley leads off eighth inning he'll be followed by Don Drysdale and then they shortstop Dick Trudzinski.
- 1:32:29Lost a hundred and twenty five in this ballpark.
- 1:32:32Here's the first pitch now to Bart Shirley the third baseman and he takes a strike.
- 1:32:38We were seventy six wins eighty five losses going into this year and starting this game we are forty forty here at Cold Stadium.
- 1:32:46One strike to count on Shirley here's the pitch by Bruce it's high and it's one ball one strike.
- 1:32:51Shirley was safe in the fielder's choice in the second flight out in the fifth inning to center field he is 0 for 2.
- 1:32:57No score and only three hits the Dodgers have picked up two of the three.
- 1:33:02Shirley leads off eighth inning he'll be followed by Don Drysdale and then they shortstop Dick Trudzinski.
- 1:33:08A lot of sunshine here now.
- 1:33:12Bruce rocks back here's the wind up in the pitch on the way to Shirley big chop to shortstop Casco has it.
- 1:33:17Throw on to Bond and there's one down so Shirley opens the eighth.
- 1:33:21That's the eighth batter in a row now that Bruce is retired as Shirley opens the eighth inning by grounding to Casco.
- 1:33:28That'll bring up the pitcher Don Drysdale.
- 1:33:32Pitcher number 53 Don Drysdale.
- 1:33:36Right hander John Purden is loosening up for the Dodgers down the right field line.
- 1:33:42Well here's Drysdale he has been on base once he drew a walk in the fifth and the first time up he bounced out to Esperamonte.
- 1:33:50One out nobody on base eighth inning.
- 1:33:54In the American League final score on the Detroit Boston game a four hit shutout by Joe Sperma.
- 1:34:01Here's a swing and a miss by Drysdale strike one. Sperma has five and five for Detroit now.
- 1:34:07As the Tigers beat Boston three to nothing Bill Montbouquet was the losing pitcher and Bill Bruton had a home run for the Tigers.
- 1:34:14Minnesota Los Angeles has not yet started.
- 1:34:17One strike to count and here's the pitch by Bruce Drysdale starts to go checks it's in there for a strike and it's on two.
- 1:34:26Cincinnati did not score in the fourth they still lead the Mets three to nothing in that second game with New York batting in the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:34:35Here's the two strike pitch to Drysdale slew a curve and he struck him out at the outside point of the belt.
- 1:34:41That's the sixth strike out for Bruce today two away now and here's the top of the batting order Dick Truszewski.
- 1:34:48Truszewski has one of the two hits off Bruce a first inning line single to left field.
- 1:34:54Next then he has popped a short and was safe on the field of his choice.
- 1:34:58Two outs nobody on. Outfield is pretty well straight away for this little fellow and the first pitch is right in there up around the letters for a strike.
- 1:35:09No score Dodgers nothing Colt forty fives nothing eighth inning.
- 1:35:13Each club has committed an error and a total of only three.
- 1:35:17It's as a change bounce to shortstop cast goes up without a knee high and they shoots it over the first base to retire the side.
- 1:35:22Ten straight retired by Bruce now as Truszewski ends the inning by bouncing out to shortstop.
- 1:35:28No runs no hits no errors and nobody left on base.
- 1:35:30Our ball game now goes to the bottom of the eighth with the score Houston nothing and Los Angeles nothing.
- 1:35:35Thirty six or eight.
- 1:35:41If you're the kind of man who likes a simple life and outdoor vacation with the kids and the wife.
- 1:35:53You like the beer from the country of the leather.
- 1:35:58And the spring from the country of the leather.
- 1:36:17Pearl is better beer because it's pruned with famous spring water from the country of eleven hundred springs.
- 1:36:41the game of the eighth inning now and Jim will any Casco and Jerry Grote will be facing Don Drysdale.
- 1:36:47No score.
- 1:36:48Those of you who may have joined us late.
- 1:36:50Quick recap here.
- 1:36:51Final scores Milwaukee 14 Philadelphia 8.
- 1:36:55First game final Cincinnati for New York 1 and after three and a half innings of the second game at Shea Stadium Reds three Mets nothing.
- 1:37:04And St. Louis defeated Pittsburgh five to nothing.
- 1:37:08They lost their first game to Chicago for the one and they're losing the second game.
- 1:37:13Here's Jim Lynn fly to the left and draw a base on ball.
- 1:37:16See his own for one officially.
- 1:37:21Drysdale has given up only one hit a sixth inning single to Al Spangler.
- 1:37:27Here's Drysdale's first pitch to win a right handed batter and he takes a strike up around the letter strike one.
- 1:37:32Nobody out nobody on base.
- 1:37:37Danny Kuhn starting to loosen up a bit for Houston down the left field line.
- 1:37:41Now the pitch to win there's a ball going on side one ball one strike.
- 1:37:48Well after Cincinnati finishes their game at New York this afternoon the Phillies and Cincinnati each will have only five games remaining to play this year.
- 1:37:58While St. Louis will have six on the schedule.
- 1:38:02Here's the one one pitch to win on Jimmy swings and files another one off one ball two strikes.
- 1:38:07the Phillies will move on the road now. They have played their final game at home during the regular season.
- 1:38:13They will move into St. Louis tomorrow.
- 1:38:15They have three games at St. Louis and then finish the season with two games at Cincinnati.
- 1:38:22And that next weekend possibly could be the decider in the National League pennant race.
- 1:38:27the Reds also as I mentioned have five games to play and all five of Cincinnati's remaining games will be at home.
- 1:38:33They play three against Pittsburgh and the two against the Phillies.
- 1:38:36Here's the one two pitch to win. He got him on that when he checked his swing.
- 1:38:40Call strike up around the letters. Winners been called out on strikes.
- 1:38:44And that is the third strikeout by Drysdale one away.
- 1:38:47Here's Eddie Casco. Now the Cardinals of course are only a game out.
- 1:38:52And they will play all six of their remaining games at home.
- 1:38:57They have three games against the Phillies and then they'll wrap up the season with three games at home against the New York Mets.
- 1:39:06Here's Casco both times he's been up. He has bounced a shortstop. No score in this ballgame.
- 1:39:11Bottom of the eighth. Here's the pitch by Drysdale.
- 1:39:13Casco hits a bouncing foul ball down by Jim Busby at third and a strike one.
- 1:39:24Left hander Jim Brewer loosening up a bit also down the right field line for the Dodgers now.
- 1:39:30One out. Nobody on base. Casco the batter and Jerry Grote will be up next.
- 1:39:35Here's Drysdale's next pitch daddy. Takes a little bit too high and it's ball one and strike one.
- 1:39:40White Sox still lead Kansas City five to one at the end of four innings.
- 1:39:47the Yankees won today or rather got beat today. Washington beat the Yankees in eleven innings three to two and Baltimore beat Cleveland four to nothing.
- 1:39:55Here's the one one pitch. A little bit inside above the knees to Casco and it's ball two and strike one.
- 1:40:03One out win is open the eighth by striking out and a ball to strike one count on Eddie Casco.
- 1:40:13Forty fives will be idle tomorrow but we'll be back in action on Tuesday night in San Francisco.
- 1:40:19Opening a three game set against the Giants and then wrap it up next weekend at Dodger Stadium against the same Dodgers.
- 1:40:25Here's the two one pitch. Casco hits a foul ball in front of Busby down the left field line and the count moves to two balls two strikes.
- 1:40:31On Tuesday night we will be on the air at nine o'clock Central Standard Time.
- 1:40:37Nine o'clock Central Standard Time Tuesday night with the first of the Giants series at Candlestick.
- 1:40:44Ball to strike two on Casco. Brody on the on deck circle off the left side. This ball game is nothing and nothing eighth inning.
- 1:40:52Outfield shade it just a bit around the left side for Casco. There's a high pop off the right side.
- 1:40:57Brody and Oliver and Griffith charging the ball and no one can get it. It goes up into the box seats.
- 1:41:03Hit in the first row alongside the Los Angeles bullpen and it's ball two and strike two.
- 1:41:15So Drysdale gets himself a new baseball.
- 1:41:19the 35s have had three base runners in this ball game. Win walk Brody safe on an error and a single by Spangler.
- 1:41:29And Drysdale throws the two and two to Casco. He struck him out too.
- 1:41:33So Casco goes down swinging and that's three strikeouts in a row for Drysdale and his fourth of the ballgame.
- 1:41:39Prior to the seventh inning he had struck out only Bruce. So with two down here's Brody.
- 1:41:45He's been up twice without a hit. Reached base in the sixth on an error on the second baseman Nate Oliver.
- 1:41:51the Mets did not score in the bottom of the fourth inning. Cincinnati three New York nothing after four innings of their second game.
- 1:42:00And Drysdale's first pitch to Brody and Jerry takes a strike up around the letter strike one.
- 1:42:08Wind is coming in from center field now left center field toward the plate. Pretty good clip at the present time.
- 1:42:15Here's the pitch on the way again and Brody goes for Drysdale's fastball and Drysdale evidently got something in his eye just as he delivered the ball.
- 1:42:23And he appears to be all right. Probably the perspiration dropped down in his eyes just as he delivered that ball.
- 1:42:33But he's out in front of Brody two strikes. Only three hits in this game. Spangler for Houston.
- 1:42:41Truszewski and Oliver for Los Angeles. It's nothing and nothing. Two strikes now on Brody.
- 1:42:48Here's Drysdale's wind up in the pitch now. Swing and a miss and he struck him out. He struck out the side. Four strikeouts in a row for Drysdale.
- 1:42:56It's number five. No runs, no head, no errors and nobody left on base. We're going out of the first half of the ninth inning with the score Los Angeles nothing and used to nothing.

- 1:43:51All these buses return to the starting locations immediately after each game. Once again, just 75 cents round trip.
- 1:44:00All buses leave approximately one hour before game time. So ride the Colt 45's Dreamliner buses to Colt Stadium.
- 1:44:07Griffith has struck out twice, his first two times up and in the sixth inning he grounded out second base.
- 1:44:13Number 26, Darrell Griffith.
- 1:44:19Right-hander Jim Owens is going to start loosening up for Houston out on the left of your line as we start the ninth.
- 1:44:26Bruce has given up two heads, struck out six and has walked one.
- 1:44:37Alcino shifts around the right side for Griffith.
- 1:44:42Wynn coming in from Sutterfield and almost continuing the sunshine here now.
- 1:44:48Here's the wind up by Bruce and the first pitch into Griffith and he taps a foul in front of Pete Reeser who's coaching down a third.
- 1:44:57Rolls on down to the Houston bullpen and a strike one.
- 1:45:00Willie Davis in the on-deck circle.
- 1:45:03Dodgers and the Colt 45's are nothing and nothing.
- 1:45:09Bob Bruce and Don Drysdale. Here's the pitch on the way to Griffith now. There's a ground ball off the right side.
- 1:45:15Morgan comes in fast on this one he'll have to hurry and just did get him.
- 1:45:19On a very slow hit ball, Griffith was shying away from that for some reason.
- 1:45:24It evidently was high and inside and he was leaning back and he accidentally hit the ball to second base and Morgan came in to make the pickup and they just got him at first base.
- 1:45:35So Griffith has rolled out Morgan to Bond, one out ninth inning.
- 1:45:38That's the 11th in a row now that Bruce has retired since he walked Drysdale in the fifth and now here's Willie Davis.
- 1:45:45He's been up three times without a hit and has struck out twice.
- 1:45:49Here's Bruce's pitch to Willie Davis. There's a foul ball that's going into the seats down the first base side and a strike one.
- 1:45:59One strike on Willie Davis. Tommy Davis will be up next.
- 1:46:04Bruce looks over his side from Jerry Grote.
- 1:46:09Here's the pitch now. There's a high fly ball pop up back into right center field. Morgan is back for this one now.
- 1:46:16Joe's calling everyone off but now the center fielder Jim Wynn moves in behind him to make the catch.
- 1:46:20Morgan all set to grab it and then Wynn called him off of it and they're two down.
- 1:46:25So Willie Davis flies to center, two outs and now here's the left fielder for the Dodgers, Tommy Davis.
- 1:46:31He's been up three times without a hit.
- 1:46:34Safe on a fielder's choice and the last two times has flied out to right field in the center field.
- 1:46:43No score, ninth inning.
- 1:46:46And a right handed batter Tommy Davis into face Bruce.
- 1:46:51Bob Rock's back now and here's the first pitch into Tommy Davis. He takes a strike on the outside corner of the bell to strike one.
- 1:47:02Well we hope that you fans have a good supply of Pearl beer on hand for this afternoon's game and a reminder to enjoy Pearl often from the country of 1100 Springs.
- 1:47:11Bob takes a double pump out there this time to Tommy Davis and the pitch is low curve ball, line drive on the left field line.
- 1:47:17It'll be in there for extra bases. Spangler coming fast Davis on his way to second and Spangler's throw will not be in time.
- 1:47:23It's a double.
- 1:47:25So Tommy Davis with two outs in the ninth is doubled over third for his 19th two base hit of the year.
- 1:47:32And the Dodgers are threatening now with two outs and the catcher John Roseboro coming up.
- 1:47:37That's the third hit off Bruce.
- 1:47:40Roseboro is over three. That's the first hit off Bruce since Oliver's singled in the infield with two outs in the second.
- 1:47:55Oh Tommy Davis takes his lead off second base Roseboro left handed batter ground ball to Morgan's left.
- 1:48:00Joe over four.
- 1:48:02Here comes Bobby Davis in the store. the play at the plate is in time.
- 1:48:12Bobby Davis is cut down at the plate by Joe Morgan DeGrody on a play that will not ever be any closer than that one.
- 1:48:19the ball was hit to Morgan going to his left. He slipped on the wet grass, picked himself up, fired DeGrody and got him to retire the side.
- 1:48:29It'll be an hour on Joe Morgan but he recovered in time to get the big play at the plate as Roseboro was safe at first base and Davis was cut down Joe Morgan to Jerry Grote and in the ninth no one hit one error and one man was left on base.
- 1:48:52And we got out of the bottom of the ninth inning and this ballgame is still nothing and nothing.
- 1:48:59Now there was a thriller play and you got this late in the ballgame and everything hinge right on that one.
- 1:49:06So the forty five will be coming up here now on the bottom of the ninth inning with Bob Bruce Al Spangler and Joe Morgan.
- 1:49:15Well the lead batter here will be pitcher Bob Bruce with no score last half of the ninth.
- 1:49:22Here comes Bob out now. He's pitched a mighty fine ballgame again.
- 1:49:28Bob incidentally Bruce has not given up a run now in 18 innings.
- 1:49:34He has pitched a shutout through nine today and his last time out he shut out the New York Mets.
- 1:49:42So he has not given up a run in 18 innings.
- 1:49:46Here's the first pitch by Drysdale and Bob Singles in the right center field may go for two.
- 1:49:52You'll have to hold with a single as Tommy Willie Davis makes the pick up.
- 1:49:56Rose Singles in the right center field to open the ninth inning.
- 1:50:01That's only the second hit off Drysdale.
- 1:50:05Well there's the big one on now if we can get him around.
- 1:50:09Here's Spangler now the only other hit off Drysdale in the sixth and has brought it out and popped out the other two times.
- 1:50:23Well we're going to have a little conference in the mile now as Drysdale Roseboro Shirley and Fairleigh all get together now on the hill
- 1:50:32to decide what kind of strategy they're going to use here now.
- 1:50:35Now to see what Houston does here whether or not they'll be budding Bruce the pitcher up to second base.
- 1:50:42Whether Al will be swinging away now in order to make sure they get straight and everything.
- 1:50:50Spangler is having a few words with the third base coach Jim Busby.
- 1:50:58So Bruce is on first.
- 1:50:59Keep in mind now that Bruce is not too fast although he does move too slowly but we'll see whether or not they call for the sacrifice.
- 1:51:10Joe Morgan will be up next runner on first nobody outscore nothing nothing bottom of the ninth inning.
- 1:51:17Here's the stretch now look over the first base and here's the pitch on the way Spangler swings away and he pops it into right field.
- 1:51:24Wes Parker coming on for this one now he makes the play on it one down so the fun was not on as Spangler flies to right field one away.
- 1:51:32That'll bring up Joe Morgan now with Bruce still on first base and one out.
- 1:51:37Nothing and nothing were in the bottom of the ninth.
- 1:51:40Thirty five Joe Morgan.
- 1:51:43Now this ballgame today is a complete reversal of our opening game here in 1962.
- 1:51:49This is nothing nothing game in the ninth inning and the first one was 11 to 2 and the 45 speech Chicago.
- 1:52:00Here's Morgan he's 0 for 3.
- 1:52:02Little left handed batter and Bruce with a very short lead off first base.
- 1:52:06Morgan second time he started to go on a low inside pitch ball on.
- 1:52:12Bruce Singleton arrived center field to start the night and Spangler is by the right field.
- 1:52:19Rusty Star will be up next one ball no strikes on Morgan and Drysdale throws again and Morgan swings and he misses that one just got a piece of it foul ball right at Roseboro speed and it's one ball in one strike.
- 1:52:34Chicago still leading Kansas City five to nothing with the A's batting in the bottom of the six.
- 1:52:39Parker fairly well back out in right field Bruce very short offer space here's the pitch Morgan swings at a fastball in a zone to two strikes now Morgan.
- 1:52:53Drysdale has allowed two hits Bruce has given up three and Morgan behind on Drysdale here now with one out Bruce and first ninth inning one ball two strikes.
- 1:53:09Drysdale back up on that over again. Here's the pitch on the way and as a tap foul bounces into the Houston dugout back third and the countermains and one ball and two strikes.
- 1:53:23Tomorrow we'll be with you on Tuesday night from Candlestick Park San Francisco nine o'clock central standard time with the first of three games against the Giants and the start of our final week of the 1964 season.
- 1:53:39Morgan back in again now one ball two strikes. Here's the stretch by Drysdale Bruce still stays close to first base fairly holding up against him high outside fastball to Morgan and two balls and two strikes to two count.
- 1:53:54Bruce single right center field Sprangler fly to right field for the first down and Morgan will be followed by Rusty Staub.
- 1:54:10He's on the right side way back.
- 1:54:26Morgan is very fast. He took the throw from Oliver but too late.
- 1:54:42That's an infield at Bruce has been moved to second base the forty five seven runners on first and second one out here is Rusty Staub and let's pause here now for station identification.
- 1:55:09Smokey Austin is coming to the mound now and we may just have Ron Peranoski.
- 1:55:14I don't know what Smokey's feelings would be here now with the winning run on second and one out and a left handed batter coming up.
- 1:55:22But he does have Peranoski warmed up in the bullpen.
- 1:55:26Drysdale has pitched himself a three hit shutout through eight and a third innings.
- 1:55:33And it appears that Austin is going to stay with his right hander Drysdale.
- 1:55:39Big deal stay on only one out and the winning run is on second base.
- 1:55:46Keep in mind now that it's running a second.
- 1:55:50So in order to get a run in here it'll take a pretty good solid base in here by stop.
- 1:55:57the first pitch for Rusty takes it high and outside ball on one another.
- 1:56:06All bond will be up next.
- 1:56:09Bruce at second Morgan at first one out Dodger infield of course a double play that there and the score nothing and nothing and the hits are all even on three apiece.
- 1:56:22And then Rose a single and Morgan has beaten out an infield at the second outfield deep and around the right side.
- 1:56:30Arms down by Drysdale.
- 1:56:31Here's the pitch Rusty looks at a fast strike on the inside corner of the knees and a small one and strike one.
- 1:56:37the Mets have just scored in that second game and at the end of five Cincinnati three New York one and at the end of six innings in the American League White Sox five Kansas City one.
- 1:56:51One ball one strike.
- 1:56:54Two men on one out last of the ninth inning.
- 1:56:59Good solid base hit here now I could wrap it up out here for today.
- 1:57:02And it's one ball and one strike on stop.
- 1:57:05Drysdale peers in to get a sign.
- 1:57:09Too big a lead by Bruce off second base here's the pitch ground ball second base double play ball.
- 1:57:14Oliver goes to shortstop out throw to first double play to retire the side.
- 1:57:19That's what the Dodgers were looking for and they got it as Morgan is out at second base.
- 1:57:24Oliver going to Trudusky on the relay over to first base ends the ninth inning and we go into extra runnings out here today in the ninth inning no runs on two hits there were no errors with one man left on base.
- 1:57:36Our ballgame now moves to the tent.
- 1:57:38With the score Houston nothing and Los Angeles nothing.
- 1:57:50We.
- 1:58:07You'll miss Pearl if you go someplace where you can't get it.
- 1:58:11You'll miss Pearl's flavor and character.
- 1:58:13You'll know Pearl is better beer because it's brewed with famous spring water from the country of eleven hundred spring.
- 1:58:22Let's have a Pearl beer.
- 1:58:46First half of the 10th inning here at Carl's Stadium.
- 1:58:49the Dodgers are going to be in the second inning and nothing.
- 1:58:53Alice is the first extra running game of the year between these two ball clubs and this is only the second time this season that the 45s have gone into extra runnings here at home.
- 1:59:05All the other extra running games have been on the road.
- 1:59:08Forty fives have won three and lost five in the extra running column so far this season.
- 1:59:17the extra runnings was an eight to seven 10 inning victory over the St. Louis Cardinals back on August the 19th.
- 1:59:25Ron Farley will lead off.
- 1:59:27He'll be followed by Nate Oliver and then Bart Shirley here in the top of the 10th inning and no score.
- 1:59:32Here's the first baseman number six.
- 1:59:34Well the Cubs defeated the Giants twice today and that just about could do it for San Francisco.
- 1:59:40Four to two second game Cal Coons won it and Bob Bowlin was the losing pitcher for the Giants.
- 1:59:47Farley takes it high and outside ball on the only home run was a grand slam by Ernie Banks.
- 1:59:51So a double loss by the Giants.
- 1:59:53Four to one four to two for the Cubs.
- 1:59:57Nate Oliver will be up next.
- 1:59:59Farley has struck out safe on an error and fouled out.
- 2:00:02He is officially 0 for 3 today.
- 2:00:05Here's the pitch on the way now swinging a foul ball a hopper back toward the screen.
- 2:00:08Here's the ball one strike.
- 2:00:13Bob Bruce and Don Drysdale now in extra innings and we have a double shutout going.
- 2:00:20Ron Farley first baseman left handed better.
- 2:00:25Bruce has given up three hits struck out six and has walked one today.
- 2:00:31Here's the one and one pitch to Farley swinging a miss strike two.
- 2:00:35Two strike countdown Milwaukee beat Philadelphia 14 to 8.
- 2:00:41Reds beat the Giants beat the Mets 4 to 1 in the first game and they're leading New York 3 to 1 at the end of five in the second game and the Cardinals defeated Pittsburgh 5 to nothing.
- 2:00:50Here's the one and two pitch to Farley a little bit low outside Yankees lost to Washington in 11 innings 3 to 2.
- 2:00:56Baltimore beat Cleveland 4 to nothing and the White Sox lead Kansas City 5 to 1 at the end of six.
- 2:01:04Yanks lead has been trimmed to three games and Cincinnati leads the National League now by a half.
- 2:01:11Ball to strike two. Here's the pitch to Farley swinging the ground ball right side deep back over.
- 2:01:16Bond gets it flips to Bruce at first base for the young Ron Farley hops one down the first base side to Walpond.
- 2:01:24We'll bring up the second baseman for Los Angeles Nate Oliver.
- 2:01:28Oliver has had one hit an infield hit in the second inning one of the three off Bruce sacrificed and flied out.
- 2:01:34He is one for two today officially. Oliver that's right.
- 2:01:40Down the bullpen for Houston right hander Jim Owens and left hander Hal Woodishick are cranking up now.
- 2:01:49And Ron Peranoski is back up throwing again for the Dodgers.
- 2:01:54Alston will have him warming up again on Casey reaches the point here where he may want to use a pinch hitter for Drysdale in the 10th inning.
- 2:02:03Bruce takes a lot of time out there in the mound.
- 2:02:08One out nobody on base. Here's the wind up in the first pitch to Oliver and as a card and ground ball to short Casco up with it.
- 2:02:14Throw the first got him.
- 2:02:17Well he really spun that one pretty good. Hard hit ground ball to short and Casco on over to Walpond to a way.
- 2:02:25Here's Bart Shirley the Dodger third baseman number 23 over three today.
- 2:02:29That's right.
- 2:02:32Dodgers nothing called forty five.
- 2:02:35the pitch to Shirley swing and a miss fastball and it's one ball and two strikes one to count.
- 2:02:48Two outs is fairly and Oliver have both grounded out.
- 2:02:56Bruce checks over his sign again from Jerry Grote.
- 2:03:02Here's the wind up in the pitch on the way down as a high high when he was slip pitch evidently slow curveball seemed to slip away from him ball to and strike one to one count.
- 2:03:16All to and strike one.
- 2:03:19Two outs nobody on top of the 10th and this is nothing and nothing Dodgers in the cold forty five shares the two and one pitch to Shirley fastball outside and it's three and one.
- 2:03:31Three ball one strike out.
- 2:03:38Oh Bruce gets behind on Shirley now.
- 2:03:45Time called and Grote is going out to talk to Bruce.
- 2:03:50To surely get on Drysdale is due to bat next.
- 2:03:56And now here comes Frank Howard out and Howard evidently is coming on as a pinch batter with a three and one count on Shirley.
- 2:04:04Austin is making a pinch hitting change right here.
- 2:04:10Bart Shirley is being lifted for a pinch batter with a three and one count.
- 2:04:17On Frank on Bart Shirley with two outs and nobody on base.
- 2:04:30Howard a right handed batter.
- 2:04:33He's hitting two hundred and thirty.
- 2:04:38Sixty nine runs batted in twenty four home runs first put popped up back in the left center field that could drop Casco going out and he got it.
- 2:04:51On the first pitch to Howard who came in with a three and one count to bat for Shirley.
- 2:04:56He seemed to be checking his swing on that one and he popped up the left center field and Casco went way out with his back to the infield and all to then to retire the side.
- 2:05:06the top of the 10th is over no runs no hits no errors and nobody left on base and the score is still nothing and nothing as the forty fives come in here last to the 10th inning.
- 2:05:19Say all you cigarette smokers have you ever tasted fine tobacco at its best.
- 2:05:23Well you have if you've ever smoked the lucky strike.
- 2:05:26You see every lucky is blended with fine tobacco from one end of that cigarette to the other.
- 2:05:32You know what LSM FT stands for lucky strike means fine tobacco.
- 2:05:37Well that means great taste.
- 2:05:39So why not do this taste fine tobacco at its best.
- 2:05:42Just look for the pack with the big red bullseye smoke a lucky strike.
- 2:05:50Fine tobacco at its best smoke a lucky strike.
- 2:06:17Here's a later score now on Cincinnati New York at the end of six innings in their second game the Reds three Mets one at the end of six and the White Sox did not score in the seventh inning at Kansas City but they still lead the A's five to one.
- 2:06:34Jim Gilliam is now playing third replacing Bart Shirley who was lifted for a pinch batter and Walpond will lead off for Houston.
- 2:06:42He'll be followed by Bob Aspermati and then Jimmy Webb.
- 2:06:50He has been up three times very few people have had hits out here today we've had only a total of six hits three off gross and three off Drysdale.
- 2:07:00All this popped up twice and grounded out.
- 2:07:06So Bob the left handed batter facing Drysdale bottom half of the 10th inning all its outside ball on one and nothing.
- 2:07:18Aspermati moves into the on deck circle off the left side.
- 2:07:24One ball no strikes no score bottom of the 10th.
- 2:07:29Drysdale gets a sign again now from John Roseboro. Here's the pitch on the way and bond it's a foul up in the seats off the left side.
- 2:07:37And it's one ball and one strike one one.
- 2:07:44Nobody out nobody on base.
- 2:07:52Left handed batter bond one one count. Here's the wind up in the pitch now and bond takes a high outside pitch.
- 2:08:01This is not the first time that Houston has gone through nine innings of nothing and nothing game.
- 2:08:09You may recall back in 1962.
- 2:08:13Here's the two one pitch ball and outside three and one on bond back in 1962.
- 2:08:18Houston and Cincinnati went 12 innings of scoreless baseball here at Cole Stadium before Johnny Klipstein hit a home run on the 13th to win it one to nothing.
- 2:08:29It was Farrell who pitched 12 consecutive innings a shutout ball at night against the Reds.
- 2:08:34All four and bond is on to open the 10.
- 2:08:37That's only the second base on balls given up by Drysdale.
- 2:08:43Number 14. First block was to Jimmy Wynn in the fifth.
- 2:08:50So for the second inning in a row now the cold 45 have their lead man on and here's Bob Aspromonti.
- 2:09:00Aspro is looking for his first hit he is 0 for 3 runner on first base is bond Ron Fairley holds up against him.
- 2:09:06Now and Drysdale throws to Aspro and he's going to punt that ball he took it inside football one one and nothing.
- 2:09:19One ball no strikes.
- 2:09:26Here's the stretch again by Drysdale not too big a lead by bond off first Aspro punts a foul down the first base side one ball and one strike.
- 2:09:37A base on balls to bond to open the bottom of the 10th with a score nothing and nothing.
- 2:09:44And Aspromonti now trying to get a punt down.
- 2:09:49Jim Wynn will be up next.
- 2:09:53Drysdale through nine innings has allowed three hits struck out five walk to.
- 2:10:02As a sign again now short lead again by bond off first base.
- 2:10:06There's a throw over there Fairley takes the throw but doesn't put the tag on bond.
- 2:10:11Drysdale trying to hold the Houston first baseman close to the bag one ball one strike on Aspromonti a right handed batter.
- 2:10:18Here's the pitch on the way and Aspro swings away on that one the Buntz sign was removed and he bounces a foul ball on the seats back to third and he's behind on Drysdale now one ball two strikes.
- 2:10:32One to go.
- 2:10:35Bob Miller a right hander is joined Ron Peranosky and the bullpen for the Dodgers down the right field line.
- 2:10:43One and two count on Aspromonti with Jim Wynn up next.
- 2:10:49Drysdale checks aside again watches bond on first arms down.
- 2:10:53Here's the pitch to Aspro very high fastball and it's two balls and two strikes to two.
- 2:11:04After six innings at New York Reds three Mets one.
- 2:11:10Cincinnati trying to win their ninth game in a row.
- 2:11:14They have already taken the opener four to one from New York while the Phillies were losing.
- 2:11:21Drysdale takes a bit of time out there in the mound now he's after that Rossenbeck.
- 2:11:27Ball two strike two.
- 2:11:30Bond has walked to open the tenth and it's a two two count on Aspromonti.
- 2:11:34To win it one to nothing it was Farrell who pitched twelve consecutive innings a shutout ball at night against the Reds.
- 2:11:41Ball four and Bond is on to open the tenth.
- 2:11:44That's only the second base on balls given up by Drysdale.
- 2:11:52First walk was to Jimi Wynn in the fifth.
- 2:11:56It's all for the second inning in a row now the Colt 45's have their lead man on and here's Bob Aspromonti.
- 2:12:06Aspro is looking for his first hit he is 0 for 3 runner on first base is Bond.
- 2:12:10Ron Fairley holds up against him here's the stretch now.
- 2:12:13And Drysdale throws to Aspro and he's going to punt that ball he took it inside for ball one one to nothing.
- 2:12:19One ball no strikes.
- 2:12:33Here's the stretch again by Drysdale now not too big a lead by Bond off first Aspro punts a foul down the first base side.
- 2:12:40One ball and one strike.
- 2:12:44A base on balls to Bond to open the bottom of the tenth with a score nothing and nothing.
- 2:12:50And Aspromonti now trying to get a punt down.
- 2:12:55Jim Wynn will be up next.
- 2:13:00Drysdale through nine innings has allowed three hits struck out five walk two.
- 2:13:08As a sign again now short lead again by Bond off first base.
- 2:13:13There's a throw over there Fairley takes the throw but doesn't put the tag on Bond.
- 2:13:17Drysdale trying to hold a Houston first baseman close to the bag.
- 2:13:22One ball one strike on Aspromonti a right handed batter.
- 2:13:25Here's the pitch on the way and Aspro swings away on that one.
- 2:13:27the punt sign was removed and he bounces a foul ball and the seat's back to third and he's behind on Drysdale now one ball two strikes.
- 2:13:38One two count.
- 2:13:41Bob Miller a right hander has joined Ron Peranosky in the bullpen for the Dodgers down the right field line.
- 2:13:49One and two count on Aspromonti with Jim Wynn up next.
- 2:13:55Drysdale checks a sign again watches Bond on first arms down.
- 2:13:59Here's the pitch to Aspro very high fastball and it's two balls and two strikes.
- 2:14:04Two two count.
- 2:14:10After six innings at New York Reds three Mets one.
- 2:14:16Cincinnati trying to win their ninth game in a row.
- 2:14:20They have already taken the opener four to one from New York while the Phillies were losing.
- 2:14:27Drysdale takes a bit of time out there in the mound now he's after that Rossenbeck.
- 2:14:33Ball two strike two.
- 2:14:36Bond has walked to open the tenth and it's a two two count on Aspromonti.
- 2:14:40There is nobody out.
- 2:14:42Arms down by Drysdale.
- 2:14:44Here's the pitch to Aspro.
- 2:14:45There's a high pop in the infield.
- 2:14:48And the first baseman Ron Fairley right in front of the bag has got it and there's one down.
- 2:14:53So Aspromonti has popped to first.
- 2:14:55Bond holds the first base of course and here's Jimmy Wynn.
- 2:14:59Wynn has been on base once in the fifth inning he drew a base on balls.
- 2:15:04And also has struck out officially he has won for two.
- 2:15:11Fairly out talking to Drysdale now.
- 2:15:19Forty fives have had runners in scoring position in the sixth and in the ninth innings.
- 2:15:30And now they have Bond on first with one out of the tenth and the batter right handed hitter Jimmy Wynn in Drysdale's first pitch.
- 2:15:37He got him on that one low outside pitch.
- 2:15:40And he got Wynn to bite on it as one strike.
- 2:15:47Dodgers had runners in scoring position in the fifth inning.
- 2:15:53And in the ninth.
- 2:15:55Here's the stretch now pitch on the way foul ball that's off Roseboro's mask off the right side of the plate.
- 2:16:00And Wynn gets behind on Drysdale two strikes.
- 2:16:04Eddie Casco will be up next.
- 2:16:090-2 count.
- 2:16:11Bond at first one out. Score nothing and nothing.
- 2:16:18New baseball now for Drysdale.
- 2:16:23Morgan and Bruce singled in the ninth inning and they picked up the second and third hits off Drysdale today.
- 2:16:30And there have been three hits off Bob Bruce.
- 2:16:36Here's the stretch now look over to first base.
- 2:16:40And there's a strike on the outside corner of the belt. Wynn has been called out on strikes.
- 2:16:45That's the second time in a row that Wynn has struck out. He's struck out looking also in the eighth inning.
- 2:16:52And that's the sixth strike out for Drysdale and each pitcher now has struck out six.
- 2:16:57Here's Casco with two outs and Bond on first.
- 2:17:02Now Eddie is 0-3. He struck out once. the other two times he's grounded out to shortstop.
- 2:17:09Last of the tenth. Nothing and nothing.
- 2:17:13Drysdale now is motioning for Wes Parker his right fielder to come in a bit.
- 2:17:19And that's the first pitch for Casco.
- 2:17:26Got a win coming in from left center field toward the plate.
- 2:17:30Bond edges away from Fairley at first base and the first pitch to Casco is a pop-up back in the shallow center field.
- 2:17:37Trudzewski going out for this one. Now the second baseman Nate Oliver makes the play on it and that retires the side.
- 2:17:42So Bond who walked to open the inning is stranded on first base.
- 2:17:45That's all for Houston 10th inning. No runs, no hits, no errors, one left.
- 2:17:49And we move to the 11th inning now. the score is still Los Angeles nothing and Houston nothing.
- 2:17:55the 7-7 the reporters.
- 2:18:22Pearl beer. Pearl's the beer that brings refreshments from the country of 1100 springs.
- 2:18:31So let's have a pearl beer. Serve up that pearl beer. Let's have a cold pearl beer.
- 2:18:41Famous spring water makes Pearl satisfy you more when you want beer.
- 2:18:46Pearl is better beer because it's brewed with famous spring water from the country of 1100 springs.
- 2:18:52Let's have a cold pearl beer.
- 2:18:59Don Drysdale is going to be lifted here and Maury Wells is coming on to bat for him in the 11th inning.
- 2:19:07And let's see who's coming in. I think it's Bob Miller who will be on to pitch the bottom half of the 11th inning for Los Angeles.
- 2:19:17He has finished his warmups and is coming into the dugout back at first.
- 2:19:21So Drysdale is all through for the afternoon and another real fine pitching job by the giant right hander for the Dodgers.
- 2:19:30Here's Wells, switch hitter. He'll be batting left handed against Bruce.
- 2:19:36Wells is hitting 273. 34 runs batted in. And two homers. He has 15 doubles and five triples.
- 2:19:45He'll be followed by Dick Truszewski and then West Parker.
- 2:19:51First half of the 11th and there's no score. Here's the windup by Bruce and the first pitch to Wells, very high ball one.
- 2:19:59Ron Peranoski is still loosening up for the Dodgers down in right field and for Houston now.
- 2:20:07And let's see, we're just getting some changes down there so we'll hold up just a moment.
- 2:20:10Maury Wells leading off as a pinch batter for Don Drysdale.
- 2:20:13Bruce's pitch pop foul, no play, high and up into the seats off the left side.
- 2:20:18And it's one ball and one strike. One-one count.
- 2:20:21White Sox did not score in the top of the eighth inning and the A's are batting now, Chicago five and Kansas City one.
- 2:20:29Maury Wells, pinch batting for Drysdale.
- 2:20:33Aspermonte is on the grass in front of third.
- 2:20:37Here's the one-one pitch to Wells. Fly ball right field.
- 2:20:40Staub coming on hard for it, digging over near foul territory. Dives but he couldn't get it. Foul ball.
- 2:20:47Great try by Rusty. He's sprawled all over the place out there.
- 2:20:51That's the second time in the last two games that Rusty has dived after a foul ball on the right field line.
- 2:20:58He just about got that one. He got a glove on it but he couldn't hold it.
- 2:21:02And it's one ball, two strikes.
- 2:21:05So Wells is back in there now here in the eleventh inning.
- 2:21:09Nobody out, nobody on base. No score.
- 2:21:19With two strikes on Wells, Aspermonte is backed up even with third base now.
- 2:21:24Curve ball popped up. Foul. Aspermonte coming in for it. Easy play for him. One down.
- 2:21:29Little pop-up on the left side of the play taken by Bob Aspermonte.
- 2:21:33So there's one down now and that will bring up the top of the batting order, Dick Truszewski.
- 2:21:38Truszewski has had one of the three hits off Bruce, a first inning single.
- 2:21:47He has won for four. That's right-handed.
- 2:21:52Outfield shades around the left side for him and the first pitch is a little bit outside at the knees for ball one.
- 2:21:59One ball, no strikes.
- 2:22:03Each club has come up with three hits.
- 2:22:09Trusz checks over his sign again now. Here's the wind up in the pitch.
- 2:22:12There's a fly ball left center field. Winn comes over for it and he makes the play.
- 2:22:17It looked like trouble for just a second.
- 2:22:20But taken easily in left center field by Jimmy Winn for the second out.
- 2:22:25Here is Wes Parker.
- 2:22:29He'll replace Daryl Griffith in right field. This will be his first trip to the plate.
- 2:22:34Parker is left-handed batter.
- 2:22:40Heading 255 and the first pitch is tapped foul up in the seats off a third and a strike one.
- 2:22:50Parker is hitting 255.
- 2:22:53Nine runs batted in. He has three homers.
- 2:22:58Outfield deep and around the right side for Parker with two outs.
- 2:23:01And Bruce's pitch, there's a bunt down the third baseline. He's going to beat it out.
- 2:23:05No throw by Aspromotti. Base hit. So Parker with Aspromotti playing deep, Bunson beats it out.
- 2:23:11So the Dodgers have a man on here in the 11th with two outs. That's the fourth hit off Bruce.
- 2:23:17A double by Tommy Davis in the ninth.
- 2:23:20And a single by Truszewski in the first and an infield hit by Oliver in the second.
- 2:23:26That is the extent of the hit so far off Bruce. And now the Dodgers have one more than Houston, 4-3.
- 2:23:33Here's Willie Davis, the center fielder. Runner on first base and two outs.
- 2:23:37Davis, Willie Davis has been up four times without a hit and twice he has struck out.
- 2:23:42Parker takes a big lead. Draws the throw over there and he gets back in time.
- 2:23:47Pretty close play.
- 2:23:50Parker took a big lead off first base and Bruce shot it over there but not in time.
- 2:23:55No count on Willie Davis.
- 2:24:01Bruce checks the sign out. Davis left handed batter.
- 2:24:04Parker's on with a bunt hit to third and Bruce throws it over there again and he gets back in time.
- 2:24:18Bruce up in the rubber again. Now two outs.
- 2:24:21Here's the stretch and a glance over to first base and Parker breaks on it. Grote's throw is going to be in time.
- 2:24:27They got it. Grote to Kesko and Wes Parker is thrown out trying to steal.
- 2:24:33Here are the 11th inning to retire the side.
- 2:24:36No runs, one hit. No errors. Nobody left on. We go to the last of the 11th inning.
- 2:24:41Still no score in this ballgame. Dodgers nothing, Colt 45s nothing.
- 2:24:47Well if you're a cigarette smoker, here's a question for you. Have you tried a Lucky lately?
- 2:24:52If not, just remember this. When you taste a Lucky, you taste fine tobacco at its best.
- 2:24:58After all, LSMFT, Lucky Strike means fine tobacco and that means great taste.
- 2:25:05It means when you light up a Lucky, you get rich, full, enjoyable flavors.
- 2:25:09So have yourself a reunion with a great cigarette.
- 2:25:12Get together with the Red Bulls Eye and taste fine tobacco at its best.
- 2:25:17Smoke a Lucky Strike.
- 2:25:20Taste fine tobacco at its best. Smoke a Lucky Strike.
- 2:25:25Fine tobacco at its best. the taste that millions like.
- 2:25:29Great taste was born the day they made this famous Lucky blend.
- 2:25:34And it's a fact each Lucky's packed with fine tobacco end to end.
- 2:25:38Taste fine tobacco at its best. Smoke a Lucky Strike.
- 2:25:43Smoke a Lucky Strike.
- 2:25:52Last half of the 11th inning and Ron Peranoski has been called on to pitch for the Dodgers.
- 2:25:57And before we get underway here in the bottom of the 11th, let's pause for station identification.
- 2:26:01This is the Colt 45s baseball network.
- 2:26:04This is KBRC, Radio Houston, 950.
- 2:26:0878 degrees in the patio. Right now, 28 minutes after 4 o'clock.
- 2:26:13Leading off to the 45s, the catcher number 8, Jerry Grote.
- 2:26:20Well, we're going on to the 11th inning now, bottom half.
- 2:26:28And Jerry Grote will lead off for the Colt 45s.
- 2:26:35Jerry so far today has been up three times without a hit. He has struck out one.
- 2:26:41So Drysdale has taken out after going 10 innings.
- 2:26:45And he allowed only three hits, struck out six, and walked two.
- 2:26:50And now it's left-hander Ron Peranoski.
- 2:26:55Here's the windup in the pitch now to Grote, and Jerry takes it high for ball one.
- 2:27:00This is the 68th game in which Peranoski has appeared. All have been in relief.
- 2:27:06In 117 innings, he has allowed 123 hits.
- 2:27:10Grote hits a foul back in the screen, one ball, one strike.
- 2:27:15Third run average at 315 for Peranoski.
- 2:27:18In 117 innings, he has struck out 73 in his walk 45.
- 2:27:26Nobody out, nobody on base. No score. Last of the 11th inning.
- 2:27:35Peranoski checks over his sign again now.
- 2:27:42Here's the windup in the pitch on the way now. There's a high-pop foul off the right side.
- 2:27:48That'll be up into the seats, and it's one ball and two strikes. One-and-two count.
- 2:28:05Here's the one-and-two pitch to Grote again now. Oh, he changed up on him, and he took it around the knees for a call strike.
- 2:28:11So Grote has been called out on strikes. That's the second time that Grote has struck out today.
- 2:28:16And that is the seventh strikeout by Dodger pitching. First one, of course, by Peranoski.
- 2:28:22Well, let's see what's going to happen here now.
- 2:28:26Bruce has not come out of the dugout. He is due to bat right now.
- 2:28:33There's no one warming up for Houston, but a relief pitcher, of course, would be ready in a hurry if they decide to pinch it here.
- 2:28:42Bruce has gone all the way. Bruce is going to bat for himself.
- 2:28:45Jim Ewell, I see here through my glasses, is working on Bob's leg here for some reason.
- 2:28:51I think that's the delay. So Bruce will come out to bat for himself.
- 2:28:55This is soon as the trainer gets through working on him.
- 2:29:02Third base umpire, Doug Harvey, looking down into the Houston dugout back a third.
- 2:29:08We can't see with the sun shining on the screen behind the plate exactly what's going on.
- 2:29:14But Ewell is doing something around Bruce's right leg, I believe.
- 2:29:22Now Bob's getting up, and he's coming out to hit for himself.
- 2:29:27So there's one down here in the bottom of the 11th inning with no score in this game.
- 2:29:32There have been about an equal number of threats by each club.
- 2:29:36Now the plate umpire, Tony Benson, is walking over that way.
- 2:29:46I guess he's just going over to get a drink of water.
- 2:29:51Well the game is delayed here for just a moment while Bruce gets sent to come out here.
- 2:29:58He's just tying his shoe. I don't know whether they had a new pair of shoes for him or what.
- 2:30:03Well quickly here again the Braves beat the Phillies today 14 to 8.
- 2:30:07And Cincinnati is still leading New York in the second game 3 to 1, with the Mets batting in the bottom of the 7th.
- 2:30:13Reds won the first game 4 to 1. St. Louis beat Pittsburgh 5 to nothing.
- 2:30:18And the Cubs won a double header from San Francisco 4 to 1 and 4 to 2.
- 2:30:23Over in the American League, Washington beat the Yankees in 11 innings 3 to 2.
- 2:30:28Baltimore beat Cleveland 4 to nothing.
- 2:30:32And in the bottom half of the 9th inning, Chicago 5 and Kansas City 1,
- 2:30:38with the A's batting now in the bottom half of the 9th inning.
- 2:30:41Detroit beat Boston 3 to nothing, and Minnesota, Los Angeles has not yet started.
- 2:30:47Well Bruce is out there now. He has one hit. He's single to open.
- 2:30:52the 9th inning is struck out and grounded out.
- 2:30:56Here's the pitch on the way and Bruce hits a chop to the shortstop, Dick Truszewski, an easy tap,
- 2:31:00and the throw to first base and two men are out. So Bruce has bounced out short to first.
- 2:31:06That'll bring up the top of the batting order, Al Spangler. He has one of the three Houston hits today.
- 2:31:11He had the first hit of the ball game off Drysdale in the 6th, and it came with two outs.
- 2:31:16Drysdale had retired the first 14 men to face him.
- 2:31:20So here's Al now with one for four, a single, facing left-hander Ron Peranoski in the 11th inning, no score.
- 2:31:30Two outs. Lowell, did you catch that announcement on Bruce?
- 2:31:36Yes, Bob came up with a blister on his foot, and he was having a little treatment there and perhaps a little bandage.
- 2:31:45So Bruce is grounded out on the first pitch, and now here's Spangler.
- 2:31:49Gilliam in close at third. Al takes a fast strike up around the letter, strike one.
- 2:31:57Still a lot of sunshine out here. No score in the 11th inning.
- 2:32:04Here's the windup by Peranoski in the pitch, and Spangler takes strike two, fastball on the outside corner of the belt,
- 2:32:09and Spangler gets behind on him two strikes.
- 2:32:12Refreshment from the country of 1100 Springs. So let's have a cold world be.
- 2:32:3012th inning starting now here at Coast Edium, and Willie Davis, Tommy Davis, and John Roseborough will be the first three batters to face Bob Bruce.
- 2:32:39This becomes our longest game of the year now for the second time.
- 2:32:44Back on May the 4th, the Colt 45s battled the San Francisco Giants to 12 innings.
- 2:32:50That's our longest game prior to today, and now we're starting the 12th here this afternoon.
- 2:32:56Left-handed batter Willie Davis. Ground ball to second base. Morgan scoots to his left foot.
- 2:33:01Easy play to first base to Bond, and there's one down.
- 2:33:04So Willie Davis starts the 12th by grounding out second to first, and that will bring up the left fielder, Tommy Davis.
- 2:33:10Time has been called in New York. John Edwards, Cincinnati catcher, has injured his hand.
- 2:33:15Boy, he's had a tough year today with injuries, and that is not going to help the Reds any.
- 2:33:21So Edwards has hurt his hand with a foul ball.
- 2:33:25It did not say in the bulletin whether or not he was removed from the game. He's taken out. He has been taken out.
- 2:33:33Here's Tommy Davis now. There's a strike on the outside corner of the knees, strike one.
- 2:33:39This is the third injury that John Edwards has suffered this season.
- 2:33:43Heard his throwing arm early in the season, and the last injury also was to one of his fingers on his throwing hand.
- 2:33:51Tommy Davis has one of the four hits off Bruce. He doubled in the ninth with two outs, and he has one for four.
- 2:33:58One out and nobody on base. Bruce's next pitch. Line drive. Great catch by Bond. He's spirited.
- 2:34:04Tommy Davis lines to right, and Bond went way up the spirit.
- 2:34:09And you have to be 6'6 to do that. Yeah, they're two down.
- 2:34:14That will bring up John Roseborough now as Walt Bond has just spirited Tommy Davis' drive headed down the right side.
- 2:34:23Roseborough is all for four today. Left-handed batter and Bruce's first pitch.
- 2:34:30There's a loop in the right center field for a base hit.
- 2:34:33Wynn comes up with it now, and Roseborough will hold on.
- 2:34:37That's the fifth hit now, or rather the fifth hit off Bruce.
- 2:34:43And it puts the runner on first with two men out.
- 2:34:48Here's Ron Fairley. He's all for four today. He's struck out once.
- 2:34:52So the Dodgers with two outs have a man on.
- 2:34:54This is the second inning in a row now that they have picked up a single with two men out.
- 2:35:00Twelve inning. John Roseborough has good speed, is on first base.
- 2:35:10Bruce takes the stretch now and a glance over to first base. Here's the pitch.
- 2:35:13There's a ground ball just fouled outside of first.
- 2:35:18One strike. Now Bruce has gone all the way today and Drysdale worked ten innings.
- 2:35:24Here's the stretch by Bruce now to look over to first.
- 2:35:27Here's the pitch on the way. There's a ball a little bit outside.
- 2:35:32And it's one ball and one strike.
- 2:35:38Bob Miller is starting to loosen up again for the Dodgers down the right field line.
- 2:35:42Foul ball high and up in the seats off the left side.
- 2:35:48One ball and two strikes.
- 2:35:51One ball, two strikes on left-handed batter Ron Fairley.
- 2:35:54Twelfth inning. Houston nothing and Los Angeles nothing.
- 2:35:59Bruce checks his runner on first. Roseborough has not been taking too big a lead over there.
- 2:36:03There are two men out. Here's the stretch now.
- 2:36:06And the pitch into Fairley. Very high and outside. Ball, two strike, two.
- 2:36:11Here's the latest from New York. Still Cincinnati out in front of the Mets.
- 2:36:15Three to one. That game is at the end of seven now.
- 2:36:19Gail and Cisco has been taken out and Bill Wakefield is pitching for the Mets in the eighth.
- 2:36:26Cincinnati won the first game four to one.
- 2:36:29Ball, two, strike, two. Roseborough on first base, two outs.
- 2:36:32Here's the pitch to Fairley again now. Too high. Full count of three, two.
- 2:36:37Going to have a runner now at first base for Roseborough.
- 2:36:44That must be Willie Crawford. I didn't catch his number but it is Willie Crawford now running at first.
- 2:36:52Crawford was signed as a $100,000 bonus player just a kid 18 years old and joined the club in June.
- 2:37:00Quite a few clubs were after him out on the West Coast.
- 2:37:07Ball, three and strike, two. Has that big lead off first base.
- 2:37:11Here's the pitch. He breaks on it. Ball, four. He lost him.
- 2:37:14Well, that's the second base on balls given up by Bruce.
- 2:37:17All the Dodgers with two outs have runners on first and second and we have a right-handed batter, Nate Oliver, coming up here.
- 2:37:24We have Owens and Woodachick in the bullpen.
- 2:37:27And let's see what decision Manager Harris will make right here now.
- 2:37:32And he's going to leave him in. He's going to go with Bruce.
- 2:37:37Nate Oliver will come in to hit against him now.
- 2:37:42Rose has given up five hits and two bases on balls now.
- 2:37:46Here's Oliver. He had an infield hit off Bruce in the second.
- 2:37:50Officially for the day one for three and sacrificed once.
- 2:37:57Willie Crawford on second base.
- 2:38:00And Ron Fairley on first with two outs, 12th inning, no score.
- 2:38:05Here is Oliver and the stretch by Bruce. A check on his runner at second base and the pitch.
- 2:38:09Ground ball, right side. Morgan over four. Joe's got it. Got him to retire the side.
- 2:38:15Oliver on the first pitch, bounces out to second and we go to the bottom of the 12th inning.
- 2:38:21So on the top half for the Dodgers, no runs, one hit, no errors. Two men were left on base.
- 2:38:27And we go now to the last of the 12th and there still is no score in this ballgame.
- 2:38:31Dodgers nothing, Colt 45 nothing.
- 2:38:35Taste fine tobacco at its best, smoke a lucky strike.
- 2:38:40Fine tobacco at its best, the taste that millions like. Great taste was born the day they made this famous lucky blend.
- 2:38:48And it's a fact each lucky stack with fine tobacco end to end taste.
- 2:38:53Fine tobacco at its best, smoke a lucky strike.
- 2:38:57Smoke a lucky strike.
- 2:39:00Last half of the 12th inning now and Joe Morgan will lead off here for the Colt 45s.
- 2:39:09Rusty Staub will follow and then Walpon. This is still a nothing and nothing game.
- 2:39:15That was the 22nd consecutive scoreless inning of pitching by Bruce.
- 2:39:20And Bob is just one away from tying our all-time club record of 23 consecutive innings of shutout ball.
- 2:39:27Fitched by Turk Farrell in 1962.
- 2:39:35Well here's Morgan now to lead off the last of the 12th.
- 2:39:40Ron Peranoski on the mound for the Dodgers. Ground ball right side.
- 2:39:44Fairley off the bag and a beat it out base hit.
- 2:39:48Peranoski didn't cover and that's two in a row that Morgan beat out.
- 2:39:53Fairley didn't know whether to go after that one or not. He started, stopped and then went over to pick it up.
- 2:39:59And by that time it was too late to get Morgan.
- 2:40:02So that is two for five for Morgan and both of his hits he has beaten out just off first base.
- 2:40:08And the pitcher could not get over to cover on either one of them.
- 2:40:12Now this is the, let's see, the third inning in our last four that the 45s have put the lead man on first.
- 2:40:22There's the first hit off Peranoski and hit number four for Houston.
- 2:40:27And Rusty Stubb, once to third. Gilliam up with it. Throw to second base. Out at second but no throw to first.
- 2:40:36And Morgan now is a little bit hot about Jaco Conlon's call about Trzysiewski being off the bag on that throw at second base.
- 2:40:43He had no chance to get back to first though.
- 2:40:46Rusty butted right into the hands of Gilliam.
- 2:40:49Gilliam couldn't have been more than 20 feet from the plate when he butted that ball.
- 2:40:55And he got it down to Trzysiewski for the force out.
- 2:40:58So now Stubbs at first with one out.
- 2:41:01On the attempted sacrifice and here's Walbon.
- 2:41:04Play went from Jim Gilliam to Dick Trzysiewski for the force on Morgan at second base.
- 2:41:09Rusty stretches his lead a bit off the south ball. Now here's the pitch.
- 2:41:13Walt taps back to Peranoski. He's going to first base. Started to go to second and then elected to go over to Fairleigh.
- 2:41:20As Rusty Nosbin moved up to second and here's Aspermonte.
- 2:41:24No sacrifice on that. That was a full swing by Bond.
- 2:41:28Two outs.
- 2:41:31Well a base hit could do it now.
- 2:41:34As Rusty's on second base with two away.
- 2:41:38Aspro has not had a hit today. He's open four.
- 2:41:41Struck out once.
- 2:41:44Last of the twelfth inning in a nothing and nothing game.
- 2:41:47Oop they're not going to fool around with Aspermonte. They're going to put him on and pitch to win.
- 2:41:53Aspermonte is being given an intentional pass and they'll pitch to Jim Winn.
- 2:41:59This will be the first walk off Peranoski and the third given by Dodger pitching today.
- 2:42:07Foot runners on first and second with two outs. So Aspermonte is intentionally walked.
- 2:42:15That's the seventh time this year that Aspro has been put on.
- 2:42:20Winn is 0 for 3. the last two times up he has been called out on strikes.
- 2:42:25Walked once and flied out. He is 0 for 3 officially.
- 2:42:30Well let's see how the strategy works here for the Dodgers now.
- 2:42:33With first base open they have walked Aspermonte with two outs and Staub on second.
- 2:42:38And here's Jimmy Winn a right-handed batter.
- 2:42:41Winn is still blowing in from left center field.
- 2:42:44Peranoski checks over his side now with his catcher Jeff Torborg.
- 2:42:48And he gets back up in the rubber again.
- 2:42:51First pitch into Winn. Just missed outside at the knees.
- 2:42:54Ball on. One ball no strikes.
- 2:42:59Houston not used. Los Angeles nothing.
- 2:43:01Last of the 12th.
- 2:43:04With two outs Rusty Staub at second. Bob Aspermonte at first.
- 2:43:08And a one ball no strike out on Jim Winn.
- 2:43:12Arms down again by Peranoski. Pitch on the way.
- 2:43:15Ground ball. Base hit. Down the left field line. It's over.
- 2:43:19And Houston wins 1-0.
- 2:43:22Jimmy Winn is single number third.
- 2:43:25And the 45s have taken the game 1-0.
- 2:43:29Winn is playing with Rusty Staub scoring from second base.
- 2:43:32Bob Bruce is the first one out to grab Winn.
- 2:43:35He gives him a big hug.
- 2:43:38Bruce has just pitched a 12 inning shutout against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 2:43:43His second shutout in a row.
- 2:43:46And the 22nd consecutive inning of shutout pitching for Bruce.
- 2:43:50And the 45s as they started the National League and finished here at Cold Stadium with a win.
- 2:43:57They defeated the Cubs 11-2 in the first game they played here.
- 2:44:01And they've defeated the Dodgers just this afternoon.
- 2:44:04That ball was hit right over third base by Jimmy Winn.
- 2:44:07And Jimmy Winn's 15th run batted in for this season.
- 2:44:11And it was a big one as Bob Bruce becomes the winningest pitcher in Colt 45 history in a single season.
- 2:44:18As he has chalked up his 16th victory of the year.
- 2:44:21Well here are the totals now for this afternoon's ball game.
- 2:44:26the 45s win by a score of 1-0 in 12 innings.
- 2:44:30For Houston one run on five hits.
- 2:44:33And two errors with six men left on.
- 2:44:35And for Los Angeles no runs, five hits one error with seven men left on.
- 2:44:40the winning pitcher is Bob Bruce.
- 2:44:42He has won his 15th game of the year against nine losses.
- 2:44:45And the losing pitcher is Ron Paranosky.
- 2:44:47He now has won five and lost seven.
