- 0:34Welcome to the drive through, episode number nine, or the second episode
- 0:37of season two, April 2021 edition.
- 0:40This is our monthly recap, where we put together a menu of automotive,
- 0:43motorsport, and random car adjacent news.
- 0:46Now let's pull up to window number one for some automotive news.
- 0:50The end is nigh.
- 0:51The end is nigh.
- 0:54They're coming for us!
- 0:56Tanya, why do you say that?
- 0:58So apparently there is a article talking about the California senators that
- 1:04are pushing our president to finally set an end date for new gasoline
- 1:11car sales in the United States.
- 1:14What is that date?
- 1:16Apparently our friends on the western coast want 2035.
- 1:22To be that deadline.
- 1:25Read my list.
- 1:26No new gas powered vehicles will be sold in the states.
- 1:33So maybe they just want that for themselves and not necessarily
- 1:38the entire United States.
- 1:41I don't know the way I read that article.
- 1:42I mean, it's ambitious for one.
- 1:44It's an aggressive schedule to make that kind of declaration, put the
- 1:48edict on the tree to say 2035, but I did read on to see they are saying
- 1:54for the, they are asking for the whole us.
- 1:56Exactly.
- 1:56They're making some changes to the, the standards.
- 1:58They want to see 51 miles to the gallon.
- 2:00They want it to be federalized.
- 2:03We all know that evs are powered, By unicorn farts.
- 2:06So I'm really wondering, you know, what the impact is going to be by 2035.
- 2:12But that's okay because, and you'll hear about this later,
- 2:15but in 2035, you'll still be able to buy a brand new 2016 Dodge.
- 2:22We will get there.
- 2:23You're right.
- 2:252035.
- 2:27Feels like it's around the corner.
- 2:29And it sort of is.
- 2:31How many movies did you watch in the 80s that said in the year 2020?
- 2:36That was, that was last year folks.
- 2:38Or the Conan
- 2:39O'Brien skit.
- 2:40In the year 2000.
- 2:42Yeah, I was gonna say not even 2020.
- 2:44They were all like in 2002.
- 2:48Begs lots of questions.
- 2:49Do we even have enough?
- 2:51Raw materials for making batteries that could sustain a world,
- 2:55well, at least the United States world that is fully electric.
- 2:59And what about the rest of the globe, Europe and Asia, they're all pivoting,
- 3:03you know, to electrified cars and all of our cell phones and laptops
- 3:08and Xbox and playstations and TVs and everything is battery operated.
- 3:13There are certain raw materials that go into these devices.
- 3:16Not enough.
- 3:17There's not enough lithium to go around.
- 3:19I mean, maybe that's why we're exploring on Mars.
- 3:21We're going to create it or something.
- 3:23I don't know, but I don't think there's enough lithium to go around and, and
- 3:26even recycling it is, is questionable.
- 3:29It's not like a traditional battery where you can use virgin lead, you can use
- 3:34recycled lead and still create batteries.
- 3:36You know, the whole process there, the chemical processes that they, that they're
- 3:39eating the lead and creating electricity.
- 3:41Lithium is a whole nother thing.
- 3:42And is the recycling really there?
- 3:45Well, recycling is great.
- 3:46However, the problem with all kinds of recycling, whether it's your
- 3:51recycling that you put up the street once a week for paper and cardboard
- 3:56and plastics is cost prohibitive.
- 3:59It's very expensive to recycle and that's what gets you is, yeah, maybe you can
- 4:03recycle these lithium batteries 100%, but if it costs you 25 times making a
- 4:11new one, that's cost prohibitive, right?
- 4:13That's what So until you kind of get those costs down, it's difficult to do that.
- 4:17And if that's where we live right now, which is likely because.
- 4:22This is all new.
- 4:23So there aren't just, you know, lithium or whatever recycling centers just sitting
- 4:27out there in in mass that can handle the volume that could be coming down the road.
- 4:33So it'll be interesting.
- 4:34That's why it all just feels like the infrastructure is not there.
- 4:38I mean, there's still going to be tons of gas cars because there's the used
- 4:42car market, but even there, if the emission standards become stringent
- 4:47and they, they kind of go back to one of those policies where it's like,
- 4:49you got to get rid of it because it's not meeting, or you can only drive it
- 4:54X miles a year and all this stuff, or if they implement things like that.
- 4:58Okay, that's great that there's a huge used car market, but then you
- 5:02won't be able to drive the cars.
- 5:03So, I mean, I hate to say people are going to cringe when I say this.
- 5:07There's a few people that have kind of pinned me to the wall before where
- 5:11I say the answer is always diesel.
- 5:14And I know it's not the cleanest thing.
- 5:16If we could figure out how to clean it, they've already proven with
- 5:19diesels, you can get 50, 80, a hundred plus miles to the gallon.
- 5:23If you could do a diesel electric hybrid of some sort, it would be
- 5:27the best pairing of both worlds.
- 5:29But I know we're shying away from fossil fuels, but even if you look at the
- 5:33bigger picture of the 900 pound gorilla in the room, You still have the aging
- 5:37power plants in the United States that are not converted over to green power
- 5:42of any, of any sort of major substance to offset, you know, our coal and, and
- 5:48ancient, you know, aging power plants.
- 5:50So I don't know.
- 5:50It's tough.
- 5:51I think it's aggressive.
- 5:52I think it's ambitious.
- 5:52I'm really curious to see where we are in 2035, if that's the target date, but,
- 5:58well, the other thing is, you know, last month we talked about
- 6:00Porsche unveiling that they're.
- 6:02You know, working on their e fuel, taking CO2 and converting it into gasoline.
- 6:09You know, that solves one component of the emissions problem, the small piece.
- 6:13And so if that comes to fruition, that becomes something that
- 6:17manufacturers can do economically.
- 6:21Because as a follow up piece to that, if we didn't mention it
- 6:24last time, more recent news is ExxonMobil is partnering with them
- 6:28to kind of advance that technology.
- 6:29So If you get majors behind them, and they're able to bring the cost of doing
- 6:34this, this isn't new technology, this has been around for decades, but if the
- 6:39cost to produce comes down and it becomes affordable, well now, we are converting
- 6:43to natural gas, not coal, that's cheaper, that's better in many ways, you know,
- 6:48there's still a cost, emissions cost to creating these batteries and whatnot.
- 6:52If that life cycle piece is equal and you're, you're making gasoline,
- 6:56but that gasoline doesn't have the same level of emissions.
- 7:00How does that change in 2035?
- 7:01Does that make it more attractive?
- 7:04Is that enough to curb the climate issues?
- 7:07Part of the climate issues?
- 7:08I don't know.
- 7:09It's complicated.
- 7:09I still don't think no EVs is the correct answer.
- 7:13I think they do have a place.
- 7:14It would be nice to see them again in major cities.
- 7:18Taxis, buses, things that are just.
- 7:21out chugging and driving and taking up time and space on
- 7:25the road, not going anywhere.
- 7:27If they're not sitting there chugging fumes out the tailpipe,
- 7:30that's a great outlet for EVs.
- 7:33Now, the whole United States on an EV, I don't know, and by
- 7:372035, no more new gas sales.
- 7:39I mean, the price of EVs, then also the other piece of this, they need to
- 7:43come down because who is going to be able to afford a 60, 70, 80, 000 EV,
- 7:51And then the jolt in your electric bill on, you know, having to charge them on
- 7:55two 20 for rapid charging and all that.
- 7:57I mean, I'm hearing numbers from people where their electric bills
- 8:01jumped 200, 300 a month because they went to EVs and off of gas.
- 8:07So is that about the same as what you're spending in fuel?
- 8:10I don't know.
- 8:10Right.
- 8:11And can we talk
- 8:12about the electric bill for a little bit here?
- 8:13Because Eric, you've got personal experience with a plug in hybrid.
- 8:17So how, how has your electric bill been affected?
- 8:21So for us, because it's only a 33 or 36 kilowatt battery, we charge on a one 20.
- 8:27So it takes about 12 to 13 hours.
- 8:29I monitor all this stuff.
- 8:30I have, you know, one of those, you know, sense monitors and
- 8:33all these kinds of things.
- 8:34I'm, I'm very, I kind of nerd out on all this stuff.
- 8:37I look at it and.
- 8:39It has cost us maybe an average of about 35 extra dollars a
- 8:43month, but that's a small battery.
- 8:44Now you take a car that's solely EV, they can do 300 miles
- 8:49of range, you know, or more.
- 8:51That's a lot more juice that you have to pull down every
- 8:54day for the course of a month.
- 8:56So take my 35 that it's costing to charge the Pacifica that we have, or maybe
- 9:01more, you know, maybe it's like 40, let's just say, let's just call it that.
- 9:04And multiply that out.
- 9:06It's a lot of money at the end of the day.
- 9:07And I don't think people realize that as they go into it, do a total cost
- 9:10of ownership on these vehicles, if you're considering buying one, I mean,
- 9:14I don't advocate not to, or, or to, or whatever, but it's something to consider
- 9:19to your point, because now it's added stress on the grid, on the vehicle.
- 9:22On your house.
- 9:22In some cases, you have to upgrade your electrical system.
- 9:25That could be thousands of dollars, especially if you're in an older
- 9:28house where your service is small, you might need a sub panel, you
- 9:32know, getting electricians involved.
- 9:33There's a lot to this.
- 9:34So I've been looking into it myself.
- 9:36I'd love to have a rapid charger for the Pacifica, but it's cost
- 9:39prohibitive for me to do that.
- 9:41When I can just charge it every night and it's ready by morning.
- 9:45So I don't really care about the speed.
- 9:47On the one hand, there's nothing wrong with setting aggressive targets.
- 9:50Cause.
- 9:51In reality, sometimes you have to just set an aggressive target and you probably know
- 9:56you're not going to make it, but at least it gets people moving in that direction.
- 9:59So it's going to force a lot of different industries to create various
- 10:03infrastructure that's needed to get there.
- 10:05And it's going to force manufacturers to bring down their
- 10:07costs and et cetera, et cetera.
- 10:08It's a whole, it feels like a whole chain of events that need to really
- 10:11happen for this light switch to flip.
- 10:14And suddenly the dealerships don't have a gas or diesel.
- 10:17powered vehicle on their lots anymore.
- 10:19We'll see what the future holds.
- 10:21Just wait.
- 10:22I'm sure the next new thing will, will happen.
- 10:25We don't know, but for now, possibly the end is nigh.
- 10:29And there's a follow up to this.
- 10:31Yeah.
- 10:31So, I mean, in terms of what we were talking about, the raw materials
- 10:35and whatnot, we had reported on the previous episode about the two
- 10:39largest electric vehicle battery manufacturers in South Korea.
- 10:44SK and LG had gotten into a little kerfuffle between trade secrets
- 10:49and this, that, and the other.
- 10:50And, uh, LG
- 10:55accused SK of misappropriating trade secrets, blah, blah, blah.
- 10:59Complaints were filed.
- 11:00Pauses were put in place.
- 11:02Kind of hampering production.
- 11:04They have come to an agreement, which is good for everyone.
- 11:08And because SK had planned on building a battery plant in Georgia, which was
- 11:14going to make the batteries for boards and Volkswagen's, So now that they've
- 11:19resolved their issues that can continue.
- 11:21So that'll be good for both Ford and Volkswagen and for electric car buyers.
- 11:25So at least there are some positive news there that there won't
- 11:28be a huge, long lasting months and months of schedule impact.
- 11:32Good.
- 11:33And you know, since we've been talking about charging and infrastructure
- 11:37and batteries and this and that, let's talk about some Stellantis
- 11:41news with respect to that topic.
- 11:43This one's pretty cool because we heard about.
- 11:47Jeep is now moving into the EV front.
- 11:49I mean, everybody at this point, um, and they had debuted that really cool
- 11:54Wrangler that we talked about, the Magneto and all this stuff, but they also
- 11:58apparently have a plug in hybrid Wrangler that they're launching pretty soon.
- 12:02And with that, they're partnering, I guess, with, or working with
- 12:05Electrify America, basically to create a charging system because
- 12:09the Wrangler should be trail ready, this, that, and the other, but okay.
- 12:12Trails.
- 12:13I go hiking, I've been to a lot of different places.
- 12:16They're in remote ish places.
- 12:19Not, you know, downtown metropolises, tons of people,
- 12:24tons of stores and all that stuff.
- 12:25You're off the beaten path a lot of times.
- 12:27Isn't that the point of going on a trail is to get off the beaten path
- 12:32and get away from civilization?
- 12:34So how is
- 12:34this going to work?
- 12:36Exactly.
- 12:37So, you know, how are you, you know, millions of miles, that's an
- 12:40exaggeration from civilization, from the nearest gas station, if you will,
- 12:44or electric starting station, you know, your little Evie runs out of juice.
- 12:48Now what?
- 12:49Yeah.
- 12:49You're in your Wrangler stuck in the Moab and Ford comes and picks you up.
- 12:53Right.
- 12:54Cause they've got their onboard generator and they give you some juice
- 12:58diesel generator.
- 12:59Yeah.
- 13:00So, so they're creating a charging network.
- 13:04It's going to be located kind of at trail heads of starting out as some of the
- 13:08more famous spots like Moab and Utah, the Rubicon trail, big bear in California.
- 13:14That's pretty cool.
- 13:16In my opinion.
- 13:17I mean, this is a hybrid Wrangler, so.
- 13:19Once it runs out of its EV juice, it has other power behind it.
- 13:23But I think this is pretty cool.
- 13:25I like it also from the aspect that if they can put those electric stations
- 13:29in, then they could also impact the forest department, if you will.
- 13:34Parks and Rec guys, because, you know, all their trucks, maybe
- 13:37they could convert the fleet.
- 13:39If anybody gives them money, convert the fleet to hybrids or full electrics as
- 13:44you're just kind of like going around the little, you know, trail towns
- 13:47and whatnot and doing the service and all the good forest keeping they do.
- 13:51I mean, that would also be another positive impact because it'd also be less
- 13:54pollution in, in those beautiful areas.
- 13:58So I think it's a positive.
- 14:00There might also be an environmental impact with running all those lines out
- 14:04to federal preserve land and all that.
- 14:06So I think there's still a lot to be figured out.
- 14:08There's a lot of logistics there.
- 14:09Like we were talking about, there's a lot of politics, a lot of bureaucracy,
- 14:12a lot of red tape, but I will tell you this, there's probably not going to
- 14:15be a charging station in Machu Picchu.
- 14:17So if I ran out of power, I know who I'd call Bruce, Bruce.
- 14:21If you're out there, I need your help.
- 14:23I've run out of electricity.
- 14:25And speaking of lost and found.
- 14:27Yes, we've got a segment that we're dubbing lost and found.
- 14:31It's a long list of a long line in a mini series that started a couple episodes ago.
- 14:37But if you all remember, we heard that there was a Dodge Viper that, you know,
- 14:41it was originally discontinued in 2017.
- 14:44That was sold in 2020 in addition to that Viper.
- 14:48Solantis has a knack for selling these undead cars.
- 14:52There was a Ram van that was sold and there was three G Patriots, all of
- 14:56which were terminated prior to 2020.
- 15:01Well, they're at it again.
- 15:02Someone went to a dealership and actually paid.
- 15:05Cold hard cash, or maybe even finance.
- 15:08That's probably more likely at 18%, but they got a 2016 Dutch darts.
- 15:16Yes, you've heard that correctly.
- 15:17I 2016 Dodge dart.
- 15:20The dart did not miss its target this time.
- 15:22And in 2021.
- 15:25Someone bought a brand new 2016 Dodge Dart.
- 15:28So if you're out there,
- 15:30Good job, Stellantis.
- 15:31Keep those numbers
- 15:32up.
- 15:32Yes.
- 15:32Anything they can do to improve their revenue numbers is okay with me.
- 15:37So I have two questions.
- 15:38What
- 15:39terrible color was it that forced it to be on the lot for the last five years?
- 15:45You know what?
- 15:45I have a theory.
- 15:46I think it was on the lot for five years because everybody
- 15:48just assumed it was a used car.
- 15:48So I have a theory.
- 15:49I think it was on the lot for five years because everybody
- 15:51just assumed it was a used car.
- 15:52You know, I bet it's that Nike Gatorade yellow green one that was
- 15:58over at Len Stoller down the road that nobody wanted to buy because it's the
- 16:01most heinous color I've ever seen.
- 16:02That's what I'm thinking.
- 16:03However, my second question is next month, are we going to hear about the remaining
- 16:08PT Cruiser that was sold in 2021?
- 16:13Maybe, maybe.
- 16:14Well, they also sold two Vipers, two brand new Vipers this month in that quarter.
- 16:21Yeah.
- 16:21In the same quarter.
- 16:21Wow.
- 16:22Yeah.
- 16:24Killing it
- 16:25first for someone like Eric, who is a Viper aficionado and
- 16:29is constantly looking for one.
- 16:31You can still buy a brand new one.
- 16:33You know, yeah.
- 16:34Give me an ACR.
- 16:35I got 50 bucks.
- 16:36I'm down.
- 16:38Yeah.
- 16:39I mean, what's the depreciation?
- 16:41What's the depreciation on these things?
- 16:43That's just it.
- 16:43What are they getting a screaming deal?
- 16:45Are they still,
- 16:46so a 2016 Dodge Dart probably financed at 125 percent because they rolled
- 16:51in the negative equity from their other car, which was probably a
- 16:552015 Dodge Dart, and then Brad's a
- 17:00Brad's a numbers guy,
- 17:03and they probably paid about 25 grand for this Dodge Dart.
- 17:08And as soon as they got it off the dealer lot, it dropped to 50 bucks.
- 17:13It's worth 1, 500.
- 17:15It's it's worth it.
- 17:16No, if I bet you, if you took that car from the Dodge dealer to
- 17:23CarMax, they would offer you 500.
- 17:27So these cars sit there for as long.
- 17:29So that means that like enterprise and national Avis.
- 17:35Nobody
- 17:35wanted it.
- 17:36They don't even want them.
- 17:38And how does the warranty work?
- 17:40Like it's already five years old and it's got no miles on it.
- 17:43It's it's out of warranty immediately.
- 17:45The
- 17:46warranty is from the date.
- 17:48Most of the warranties are from the date.
- 17:50It's it's it's um, not purchased.
- 17:52Or is it the date it's purchased?
- 17:54I thought it was the date of manufacturing.
- 17:56That's craziness.
- 17:57I don't know.
- 17:58God, enjoy it
- 17:59by a brand new five year old Dodge Dart, but they also bought one out of warranty.
- 18:04Hold on a second.
- 18:05Click, click, click, click, click.
- 18:06Oh, it's on bring a trailer now for 47, 000.
- 18:09So you can get it today.
- 18:10Low mileage Dodge
- 18:11Dart.
- 18:12All right.
- 18:1247, 000 pennies.
- 18:14You can pick up your Dodge Dart.
- 18:16I mean, that's a little.
- 18:18sitting there on a lot for that long.
- 18:20I mean, I hope they monthly ran it, drove it around, put a couple of miles on it.
- 18:26Yeah.
- 18:28It's a Dodge Dart.
- 18:29Why do you even bother?
- 18:30It's like, who cares?
- 18:32So I kid you not.
- 18:33So talking about Dodge Dart, I recently watched an episode rerun of roadkill.
- 18:37And they did a drag race between a brand new Dodge start.
- 18:41And one of the old ones, like from back in the sixties, they said, and I
- 18:44thought it was funny, it cracked me up.
- 18:46They were like the Dodge dart is like the slowest production.
- 18:51Mopar like hands down in the last 30 years, it does a
- 18:55quarter mile in like 19 seconds.
- 18:57I mean, we know a bone stock Audi coupe GT five cylinder making like 130 horsepower
- 19:04will do the quarter in like 30 seconds.
- 19:0516 or something insane.
- 19:06Right?
- 19:07So I'm like, it is so slow.
- 19:09So their target time to beat, like barely doing bolt ons on a, like a 64
- 19:14Dodge Dart was like incredibly high.
- 19:16They're like, we can do this without even trying like beating this car.
- 19:20So what they ended up doing was dropping it from a helicopter about a quarter mile
- 19:24up just to see if the speed was faster.
- 19:26It was, it was not, but, uh, it was actually very entertaining.
- 19:29Go look for the Dodge Dart episode of Roadkill.
- 19:32It'll put you in stitches.
- 19:34So let's switch to our, let's call it our favorite brand around here.
- 19:38Maybe we have a bias.
- 19:39I don't know.
- 19:40We're definitely Volkswagen, Audi group people, not all of us in GTM, but there's
- 19:44a fair portion of us here that are.
- 19:46So let's switch over to some VAG news.
- 19:49So for many of you that may not know Volkswagen group or Volkswagen
- 19:54Audi group actually owns Bugatti a little while ago this month, a guy
- 19:59named Patrick Piper did a rendering of a Bugatti Superbike concept.
- 20:05And he calls it the Vitesse, you know, hearkens back to the, I
- 20:09think there was a Chiron Vitesse.
- 20:11Um, there was a Veyron Vitesse, you know, and so on and so forth.
- 20:15Wasn't there the
- 20:15Bugatti Baby 2 Vitesse?
- 20:17There's the Baby
- 20:182, there's the Baby 2 Vitesse, there's the Baby 2.
- 20:22There's the speed in French.
- 20:23Is that what that means?
- 20:24The more you know.
- 20:25Uh, but anyway, this guy rendered this bike, I'd say it's, it's a cross between
- 20:30a Cafe Racer And it looks like the front end is very similar to a Chiron.
- 20:36There you go.
- 20:37What did he say?
- 20:38Tron light cycle.
- 20:38It's a Tron
- 20:39light cycle, yes.
- 20:39It looks very similar.
- 20:40Just
- 20:40missing the LEDs.
- 20:42To a
- 20:42Tron light cycle.
- 20:42It looks like it doesn't have any lights at all.
- 20:44Did I see him there?
- 20:45There's no lights.
- 20:46I don't
- 20:46understand how it turns.
- 20:49The worst turning radius in the planet.
- 20:51of the Viper motorcycle that they had a couple of years ago.
- 20:54It turns
- 20:55with the rear.
- 20:56Yeah.
- 20:57All you gotta do is wrap the throttle.
- 20:59I didn't see, did he, in the rendering, did he want to do a
- 21:0316 cylinder quad turbo motor?
- 21:05Because that would be pretty sick.
- 21:08I don't know.
- 21:09I think it looks really cool.
- 21:10Some of the, I mean, they're all renderings because it's all
- 21:12CGI because it does not exist.
- 21:13I don't know.
- 21:14But the one in the wind tunnel looks really slick.
- 21:16I think
- 21:17I agree.
- 21:17It does look pretty cool.
- 21:18I would like to see them build a concept and just try it.
- 21:21I mean, why not?
- 21:22I mean, now Bugatti is not known for motorcycles, but I get it.
- 21:26The here's the, here's the Kevin Bacon connection, folks.
- 21:29Volkswagen owns Audi.
- 21:31Audi owns Ducati.
- 21:33Bugatti is in there, Lamborghini, all this whole mess.
- 21:35It's all one big happy family.
- 21:36It makes sense for them to try a bike like this.
- 21:38So it's probably a, you know, or would be a Ducati at the end of the day with
- 21:41some sort of skin on it and Bugatti flare and all that kind of thing.
- 21:44So I say, send it, man.
- 21:46I wanna see it.
- 21:47Let's, let's try it.
- 21:48I agree.
- 21:48And if they made it and then they tried to sell it, they could sell it under volts.
- 21:53Wagon, which we're going to talk about later and it could be an electric bike.
- 21:58Did we go there?
- 21:59Did we really just go there?
- 22:00Let's talk about Volkswagen and electric vehicles.
- 22:03Tanya, should we start with
- 22:05it?
- 22:05What's it a name?
- 22:06We should, we really should.
- 22:07Sure.
- 22:08Sure.
- 22:08So what day was it?
- 22:10It was March 31st.
- 22:11No, it
- 22:12wasn't even, it was like March 29th or March 30th.
- 22:15Oh my God.
- 22:16Yeah.
- 22:16So the geniuses at Volkswagen came up with a great idea.
- 22:20I'm having a putt card.
- 22:22Face palm moment, folks.
- 22:24You can't see it in the audio, but that is exactly what I'm doing now.
- 22:27Several years ago, I think it was in the early two thousands.
- 22:31Dodge spun off the Ram truck division into its own brand.
- 22:36And more recently, you know, within the last five years, Hyundai
- 22:39did the same thing with Genesis.
- 22:41Genesis is its own kind of brand or sub brand now Volkswagen.
- 22:46Made an announcement that they were going to spin off their
- 22:49entire electric car division and call it a Volt Wagon of America.
- 22:56I think it was only in the US market that they were going to do this.
- 22:58Correct?
- 22:59Is that what that's what I read?
- 23:00I mean the way I read it was Volkswagen of America was going to become Bolt's wagon.
- 23:06Oh Which just confused me because I, what happens to my Volkswagen right now?
- 23:13I mean, if
- 23:14you think about it, if they're trying to go all EV, then
- 23:17eventually Volkswagen would be Volkswagen, Volkswagen, Volkswagen.
- 23:23I'm confused.
- 23:23I'm
- 23:24lost.
- 23:25But anyway, but anyway,
- 23:26they announced it or somebody announced it or leaked it or whatever.
- 23:30It got a ton of backlash, very much like the Sonic the Hedgehog movie.
- 23:34And Volkswagen said, no, no, no, no, no, no, just kidding.
- 23:37We not going to do this.
- 23:38I
- 23:40mean, at the end of the day, they came back and said that it was an early
- 23:43release of an April Fool's style prank and that the name isn't changing.
- 23:48On the
- 23:49play flag on the play.
- 23:53All right.
- 23:54Uh, this stinks.
- 23:55There's something rotten in Norway here.
- 23:57All right.
- 23:58And it's not Will Ferrell in that Cadillac commercial that
- 24:00we talked about last month.
- 24:02This is a mess.
- 24:03I'm sorry.
- 24:04I get it, it's like corny dad jokes, but you don't change the name of a hundred
- 24:09plus year old company just like that.
- 24:11Yeah, I don't like it for that reason.
- 24:13Cause it's like, you don't, the name has been around for so long, good or bad.
- 24:17I mean, it's the company's name.
- 24:19I mean, it's just cause I have personal feels about it, I guess.
- 24:22Owning one.
- 24:25Well, what, what's next?
- 24:26They're gonna change from Porsche to, to Porsche with a ED.
- 24:30Well, or Volvo
- 24:30becomes vol.
- 24:32I, I don't know.
- 24:34Well,
- 24:34I think with Porsche, they're just gonna tell us how to
- 24:36actually pronounce it for once.
- 24:39Yeah.
- 24:39Really?
- 24:40Is it Porsche?
- 24:41Is it Porsha?
- 24:43A porch is something you sit on that, that I know.
- 24:45Yeah.
- 24:46You can sit on those duck bill wings.
- 24:48I the, the duck bill ducktails, the whale
- 24:50tails for sure.
- 24:50Yeah, the
- 24:50whale tails.
- 24:51You can have lunch on one of those.
- 24:53So because of all this nonsense and shenanigans,
- 24:56I mean, at any rate, there was a lot of, no, no, this is true.
- 24:59This is true.
- 24:59This is true.
- 25:00And then all of a sudden, no, it's not.
- 25:03It was true enough to drive up the stock price though.
- 25:08And exactly.
- 25:09And now apparently the SEC is maybe filing a little investigation because that
- 25:15little brouhaha drove the share prices up 16 percent or something of that nature.
- 25:21So.
- 25:21Didn't Elon Musk do the same thing with Tesla?
- 25:24You know, cause we love the rag on Tesla.
- 25:25All
- 25:26the time.
- 25:26You did the
- 25:26same thing with a tweet about Tesla a couple of years ago and
- 25:30the SEC was up his butt too.
- 25:32We'll talk about Tesla's
- 25:34butt later.
- 25:38Spoiler alert.
- 25:39So in, in briefer news, uh, Volkswagen, excuse me.
- 25:43Now nobody knows how to say it.
- 25:45VW.
- 25:48You can never go wrong with VW.
- 25:50Well, I'm changing it to Schwagen.
- 25:52That's what I'm calling it from the Schwagen company.
- 25:54Volkswagen, Volkswagen, Schwagen.
- 25:57No,
- 25:58no.
- 25:59There is finally a date for the ID Buzz.
- 26:03So the electric minibus.
- 26:05Is going to come to the shores over here in 2023 as a 2024 production model.
- 26:13Europe's gonna get it before us, I think like 2022.
- 26:16But yeah, it's coming.
- 26:17It is actually coming.
- 26:19So we will hopefully, I would love to see one trundle down the
- 26:23road, a little Volkswagen Mini.
- 26:26But if
- 26:26you can't get one, if you can't get in as an early adopter, you
- 26:31can still buy a 2016 Dodge Dart.
- 26:34That joke's never going to get old.
- 26:40But the last bit of, I guess, Volkswagen Audi news is, you know,
- 26:46the e tron is here now, right?
- 26:48Is that like the Volt?
- 26:49Tron.
- 26:50Oh, wait, nevermind.
- 26:52Eat Tron.
- 26:53I think
- 26:56Voltron is copywritten.
- 26:58Not
- 26:58bad.
- 27:00Audi has recently debuted its New A six E-Tron concept on what's
- 27:08gonna be their new EV platform.
- 27:10They're gonna have their whole, it's gonna be called Premium Platform
- 27:13Electric or PPE, not to be confused with personal protective equipment , but
- 27:18they're gonna have their own platform in collaboration with Porsche, and they're
- 27:21gonna start hitting the road in 2022.
- 27:25You know the, it doesn't look terrible, honestly.
- 27:28It's a quite elegant, sleek looking Audi.
- 27:31It boasts some pretty big numbers as a concept in terms of let's just
- 27:36start with battery range, because that's what everybody cares about.
- 27:39The claim on concept estimate numbers is 435 miles.
- 27:45This is on the WLTP cycle range.
- 27:49One of the European standards, the EPA cycle is saying
- 27:53more like 390 to 400 miles.
- 27:55Still isn't horrific, but the 435 would be a lot better.
- 27:59And it's not built yet, so who knows what the actual number is going to be.
- 28:02It could be worse, could be better, could be what they're saying.
- 28:05At any rate, I think the equivalent horsepower is going
- 28:07to be something like 469.
- 28:10It's alleging to do zero to 62 miles per hour in less than four seconds.
- 28:14So it's going to push you back in your seat a little bit as it doesn't meet 435
- 28:20miles of range when you're doing that.
- 28:22It's coming soon.
- 28:23It's the next offering from Audi.
- 28:25Hopefully the price.
- 28:27Is going to be, I believe they were saying less than what the E-Tron currently is.
- 28:33It's gonna start somewhere in the mid 50,000 range, which is still very
- 28:36expensive and out of a lot of people's range, but at least it's moving
- 28:41that needle in the right direction.
- 28:42I'm sure eventually they'll come out with the A four E-tron and hopefully it'll
- 28:47be, you know, that'll probably start in 40 thousands or something like that.
- 28:51Yeah, I mean, if they, if they can get it to the $50,000 mark.
- 28:55That's really close to the current pricing, I believe, for the A6 anyway, so
- 29:00if they can get the electric vehicles to cost in the ballpark of what the gassers
- 29:06cost, then I think that's okay, because they're still catering to their market.
- 29:11Audi's starting to make more moves, just like all the other Majors out there.
- 29:15So we'll see who's next or what's next,
- 29:19but moving on to random new EVs and concepts, this is going
- 29:23to be everything that we know about the Corvette Stingray SUV.
- 29:26Yes, because it's a Corvette, this has become my story.
- 29:30All things Corvette belong to them.
- 29:31All your
- 29:31base are belong to us.
- 29:33And all your Corvette belong to me.
- 29:35And basically everything we need to know about the Corvette
- 29:38Stingray SUV is that Chevrolet should not make this stupid thing.
- 29:44That's what we know.
- 29:45That's all
- 29:45we know right now.
- 29:46Chevrolet artists shouldn't have just Taken a rendering of the
- 29:49Mach E and put a Corvette badge on
- 29:52the hood.
- 29:53You know, I was thinking that, but it looks like they took the C8 nose
- 29:57and put it on the front of a Yuris.
- 29:59It's even a Yuris color and yum yum yellow.
- 30:02I mean, it's ridiculous.
- 30:04I noticed that too.
- 30:06Yeah.
- 30:06It's, it's definitely a copycat of several cars and whether it's fact or fiction.
- 30:12I don't know how I feel about an EV carrying a Corvette moniker
- 30:16in the way that the Mustang does.
- 30:18I can get behind the, what we talked about in an earlier episode where
- 30:22they don't want to put out the Grand Sport, but they're talking about coming
- 30:25out with like a C8 that's electric.
- 30:27I could get behind that.
- 30:28Yeah, the e ray, I can get behind that, but, but a truck with a Cort patch.
- 30:33I, I dunno why
- 30:34acres do this.
- 30:35They, Ford ruined the, the Mustang name with the Mustang Mach e,
- 30:41like to the point where nobody even calls it the Mustang Mach e.
- 30:44It's just the Mach E, which is what it should have been.
- 30:47Mitsubishi did this with the Eclipse moniker.
- 30:50They destroyed it by putting it on, I mean.
- 30:52The Eclipse was a piece of crap anyway, but they destroyed the
- 30:55name that had some heritage by putting it on an SUV, a little SUV.
- 31:01And now Chevrolet General Motors is doing this with the Corvette.
- 31:05I think is the worst idea ever.
- 31:08I
- 31:08think this is right along the lines of the new trailblazer.
- 31:12Mountain Mandate.
- 31:13I'll talk about all these.
- 31:14If you're, you know, back in the days of the K 10s and the
- 31:15Jimmies and all those kinds of
- 31:18trucks.
- 31:19Yeah, when the blazer was the blazer right now you look at it, you're like,
- 31:22that's a Camaro on stilts, right?
- 31:25So I can understand where they're going with this idea with the Corvette.
- 31:29I can't get behind it though.
- 31:31I will definitely get in front of it and run away as quickly as possible.
- 31:34But I just I don't I don't get it.
- 31:36They're doing what everybody else is doing.
- 31:38Everybody's making these.
- 31:40They're called the compact crossover SUVs.
- 31:42So they're, there's something that's bigger than a golf.
- 31:45But smaller than traditional SUV trying to be, you know, Goldilocks
- 31:50syndrome here, which one's just right,
- 31:53you
- 31:53know, if we
- 31:53learned anything from BMW, all of the GT cars that they built five years
- 31:58ago, if not maybe a little bit longer.
- 32:01They were a mistake.
- 32:02Don't follow their path.
- 32:04It's not worth
- 32:05doing.
- 32:06If you search a BMW lot, you might actually be able to find a brand
- 32:09new one that was made in 2016.
- 32:11Well, the problem, the problem with that vehicle, if I recall the one that there
- 32:16was like two that were ever on the road is that they're ugly as all get out.
- 32:22They, by today's BMW standards, those things are like the Mona Lisa.
- 32:26They are gorgeous.
- 32:27What are you talking about?
- 32:28Well, and that may be true, but.
- 32:31I mean, these, all these compact little crossover thingies, if that's what
- 32:36they're classified as, the Mach E and Volkswagen's ID4, all that, I mean.
- 32:40They're not horrific looking.
- 32:43I don't have a pro, I don't have a problem with them making this vehicle.
- 32:48'cause it's just, it's the way of the world.
- 32:50This is the, this is where everybody's going.
- 32:52My problem is with them slapping the Corvette logo and name on it.
- 32:57Well, I had the same problem with the Mustang Mach key.
- 32:59I don't think Mustang should have been, it should have been called a Mustang.
- 33:02And it's not a Mustang.
- 33:03No.
- 33:04And it should not have a pony on the, on the hood and the grill either
- 33:07that, yeah.
- 33:08And I agree this is not a Corvette.
- 33:10They could have called it a million other things.
- 33:12They could have brought back the Pinto name.
- 33:13They could have called the Galaxy.
- 33:15They could have called it the Palomino.
- 33:17Yes.
- 33:17Called, let's call it, let's call it a Pinto, because that would've sold, well,
- 33:21the Grand Torino, I don't care what they call it, just don't slap a Mustang
- 33:24badge on it to fluff up the numbers.
- 33:26That's just stupid, but you know who's doing it right.
- 33:29We hinted at this months ago that Hyundai was up to something.
- 33:33There was something on their website that they were going to reveal
- 33:36boxy looking sort of E30 BMW ish.
- 33:39We couldn't really tell what it was.
- 33:41They went in completely the opposite direction.
- 33:44They took an original Jujaro design, 1970 Hyundai Pony
- 33:49turned it into a modern EV car.
- 33:52So they did.
- 33:53A factory approved restomod.
- 33:56And if you haven't seen this thing yet, it is pretty wild.
- 33:59Now, granted a lot of the Jujaro cars from that era kind of look the same.
- 34:04Right.
- 34:04The Scirocco, the pony, a lot of the launches.
- 34:07He, at that time, he was kind of going through a phase, you know, but it's pretty
- 34:11cool to see this now what 50 year old car out there and been given new life.
- 34:18As an EV and some really cool and inspired designs, especially in the interior.
- 34:24I got really excited when I first saw this because when you glance like at
- 34:29the photo or whatever, and it, the, like the cover photo is from behind for a
- 34:34second there, I thought it was a Trueno.
- 34:36I was like, Oh my God, is this an AE86?
- 34:40Well, the first reaction I had was, is this a Chivette?
- 34:42And then I realized it was a Pony, but yes.
- 34:46And that's like, you know, you blink sideways and looked really fast.
- 34:49And then I just got excited by, you know, AE86, like an original one.
- 34:54And then found out, no, it's not that at all.
- 34:56It's this Hyundai.
- 34:57I mean, I think it's pretty cool because I like the idea of actually
- 35:01like, this is the original car.
- 35:03Whether or not this is the best looking car ever.
- 35:07Uh, you know, that's.
- 35:08Surely in the eyes of the beholder and debatable.
- 35:10I mean, it's not, I mean, it's, it's cute.
- 35:12It's charismatic.
- 35:14So I'm going to throw out a challenge for us.
- 35:16I think we at GTM should do this.
- 35:18We should get an old Mark two golf or GTI or whatever, and put an EV power
- 35:24plant on it and just play with it.
- 35:26Modernize it with EV technology and stuff.
- 35:29Why?
- 35:30Because much like Dodge, there's a bunch of e golf sitting on Volkswagen
- 35:33dealership lots that we could just buy brand new today and save a lot of hassle.
- 35:36But it's not the perfect little boxy ones.
- 35:39I know, I know of a, of a Audi coupe GT with a heck of a lot of front engine.
- 35:47Hood space.
- 35:48Yeah, yeah, you can put anything in the front of those.
- 35:51Got space for miles.
- 35:53Flipping the coin on retro, a name we haven't heard in a while, and a name
- 35:57that's synonymous with darkness, Morris Garage, better known as MG to the world.
- 36:04I had no
- 36:05idea it meant Morris Garage.
- 36:07You didn't?
- 36:08No.
- 36:08Oh
- 36:08yeah, that's what it stands for.
- 36:09I learned nothing on our British episode.
- 36:14So that being said, MG has come to the table proposing an MGB,
- 36:20that's B as in Bravo, inspired EV two seater roadster first glance.
- 36:26I looked at and said, what about this car says MGB or MGBGT.
- 36:31And none of it resonates with me.
- 36:34And the other thing I realized was it's still an MG, which means electronics.
- 36:39The whole car
- 36:41is electric, so it's a Lucas Electronics car.
- 36:45It's a nightmare.
- 36:46I mean, good for them.
- 36:47If they're going to come back, you're going to really
- 36:49have to sell me on this one.
- 36:51And if you don't believe me, go listen to our British cars episode and listen
- 36:54to some people that own British cars.
- 36:55Talk about them.
- 36:56Uh, it's a love, hate relationship.
- 36:58So this is
- 36:59an MGBGTEV.
- 37:02That's a lot of letters
- 37:04that will not win you any, any points in Scrabble.
- 37:06I mean, it's probably going to work since MG is owned by a Chinese company.
- 37:13I mean, if it's anything like all the other carbon copies they're putting out
- 37:16now, like what was that thing called that looked like a beetle that's not a beetle?
- 37:19Oh gosh,
- 37:21the tiger paw or the love cat or the
- 37:23something cat
- 37:24the love cat
- 37:26Like the love bug, but the love cat.
- 37:28What was that?
- 37:29It was really horrific.
- 37:30I it's pretty
- 37:31terrible Well, i'm reading this it says it's the cyber stir
- 37:35concept whatever the f that means
- 37:38the punk cat The punk cat there it is punk cat.
- 37:42It's a bw beetle rebooted as Punk cat electric car from this time.
- 37:49It's like
- 37:49the next, the next iteration is going to be the jive turkey.
- 37:54Oh man, I got my punk cat part next to my jive turkey.
- 37:58We just switched gears here.
- 37:59I am all for an electric beetle, but not that thing.
- 38:05Nope.
- 38:06No, not this.
- 38:07This unfortunate, yes, it sort of resembles a very
- 38:11early Beatle fastback ish.
- 38:14Wise has four doors.
- 38:18There's all sorts of wrong with that thing.
- 38:20It reminds me of a British taxi cab that's been squished.
- 38:24You know, those, the famous black taxi cabs in London.
- 38:27Yeah, three
- 38:28tone paint job is not doing anything for me either.
- 38:31Reverse skunk.
- 38:33Switching gears.
- 38:34Last month we had Tom Wendy on as our guest host and he's our
- 38:37resident Rotard as he calls himself.
- 38:39He's all about rotaries.
- 38:41He has several RX 7s, one of which we can't find.
- 38:45It does exist somewhere, but you know, we talked about how
- 38:48Mazda was pulling out of IMSA.
- 38:50They need to play catch up with the whole EV market and, you know, hybrids,
- 38:55you know, they put a lot of time and effort into their Sky Active program,
- 38:58the Atkinson crank engines and whatnot.
- 39:01Now they've said they're going to come to the table with something
- 39:04known as the MX30, which is going to be an SUV with a rotary longevity
- 39:10extender, I believe they're calling it.
- 39:12And so it's going to basically be a rotary hybrid instead of a standard gasoline,
- 39:17you know, regular piston engine hybrid.
- 39:19I am.
- 39:21All sorts of confused when I see this car because a rotary is confused me to begin
- 39:26with, you know, triangle inside of square makes things go boom and all the math
- 39:29that's involved in that and apex seals going out the exhaust valves and whatnot.
- 39:34On top of that, it looks like a Miata that's been sort of stretched.
- 39:38It has the same lights in the back and it's just kind of awkward looking.
- 39:42But then when, as I dove into it a little bit further, the specs
- 39:45reminded me of a Miata as well.
- 39:47And Mazda is saying.
- 39:49That the U S model will produce 144 horsepower in 200 pound foot of torque,
- 39:55two different than a Miata, honestly.
- 39:57And the battery is only 35 and a half kilowatts.
- 40:00And there's no word on what the range of the models is going to be for
- 40:05the U S market, things like that.
- 40:06Right now, they're saying without the range extender, without the rotary hybrid,
- 40:11it'll go about 124 miles on a charge.
- 40:14It's really, Not that great.
- 40:17And there is no date as to when it's going to become available.
- 40:21The rumor has it maybe as early as this year, later this year in the fall,
- 40:25but we're still not really certain.
- 40:28I think it's kind of cool.
- 40:29Mazda is trying something different.
- 40:32I don't like it when we beta test things on the public, but, uh, you
- 40:36know, Hey, we'll see where it goes.
- 40:37Right.
- 40:38There was something that you said that kind of.
- 40:41Made me go, hmm.
- 40:42It was when you mentioned rotary and longevity extender in the same sentence.
- 40:49Yeah, I know.
- 40:50That's like an oxymoron.
- 40:52That doesn't make any sense to me.
- 40:53I mean, everybody that's ever heard anything about a rotary
- 40:57knows that they're known for their.
- 40:59Longevity and reliability.
- 41:01Yes.
- 41:01Yeah.
- 41:01So what ends up happening is it becomes an LS swapped hybrid later in its life.
- 41:06Cause that's what usually happens with most referees, right?
- 41:10Why don't they just call it the MX five?
- 41:13That's what the Miata is.
- 41:14Why don't they just follow Chevy's playbook?
- 41:16That's true.
- 41:17Just relabel it the Miata, right?
- 41:18They actually don't call the Miata the Miata anymore.
- 41:21I don't know.
- 41:21I'm all confused there too.
- 41:22Is it the MX 5?
- 41:23Is it the Miata?
- 41:24What is it?
- 41:24I mean, I guess we're playing the name game this month.
- 41:26Just for my own edification, what is MX 5?
- 41:29How'd they come up with that?
- 41:30If this is the MX 30, there's got to be a reason.
- 41:33The number has to signify something.
- 41:35I'm not sure.
- 41:36I don't really know.
- 41:37I know like with Toyota, The MR is like short for midship runabout,
- 41:42which is weird, but I don't know what the MX stands for, for Mazda.
- 41:46I
- 41:46always thought MR was for the, for the layout.
- 41:49It's a mid engine rear wheel drive.
- 41:52We would all believe that to be true, but in Toyota doctrine,
- 41:55it says it's short for midship.
- 41:59Well, if our two listeners, you know, have access to comments,
- 42:03please send us an email and let us know what the MX five stands for
- 42:07and what's the MX 30 stands for.
- 42:09But looking at Tanya in the other screen there, it looks
- 42:12like she's going to tell us.
- 42:13Well, according to a very quick search, which I typed in incorrectly,
- 42:19but still came up, it says MX five simply stands for Mazda experimental.
- 42:26X in the experimental project number five.
- 42:30So that's where RX is rotary.
- 42:33RX is rotary experimental number seven.
- 42:36That's actually true.
- 42:37Then there you go.
- 42:38So whatever happened to the six through 29 experiments.
- 42:44Been
- 42:45in the tragic, tragic endings for all of those.
- 42:49I don't know.
- 42:50We might have
- 42:50to, uh, might have to do a little more digging than 30
- 42:53seconds worth, um, to verify, but
- 42:56no, I think that's all you need.
- 42:58Okay.
- 42:59All right.
- 43:00Then anything else in the Evie world,
- 43:02Tanya.
- 43:02So rounding out our Evie segment.
- 43:06So we've been talking about electric cars, electric SUVs.
- 43:11Electric Corvettes, but not Corvettes.
- 43:15What about tiny electric cars?
- 43:19Well, tiny.
- 43:20What are you talking about?
- 43:21An electric golf.
- 43:22The electric FI 500.
- 43:24No, we've talked about them.
- 43:25I don't know.
- 43:26Think smaller.
- 43:27Think like a BMW Isetta, something that fits one person, maybe two people.
- 43:35There are some folks out there trying to make this become a thing.
- 43:39Tiny electric vehicles that are three wheelers, two wheels in the
- 43:44front, one wheel in the back, and you literally can only fit, Up to
- 43:47two people, essentially, in them.
- 43:49There's, there's three different ones in this article, um, that
- 43:52are, that are featured here.
- 43:54The first one they show, they made it more the size of a car with, you
- 43:57know, an extra wheel in the back.
- 44:00It's actually not terrible because it's heavily inspired, I
- 44:02think, by, like, Alfa Romeos and whatnot, especially from the front.
- 44:06This Nobz GT100.
- 44:10It's from Estonia,
- 44:11also known for reliability.
- 44:14Yes.
- 44:14Um,
- 44:15uh, at any rate, it's definitely stealing some, some features
- 44:19of some other, some other cars.
- 44:21And then you've got the micro Lino, which essentially, if you didn't say it
- 44:25was a micro Lino, it looks like a BMW Isetta, you know what that looks like.
- 44:30And then there's the, uh, Electra Mechanica Solo, which is, I don't know,
- 44:36an Opel from the front, maybe, but chopped in the back and only one, one wheel.
- 44:41It looks like that.
- 44:42What was it?
- 44:43Helio or Elio or whatever was supposed to come out with a car in the U.
- 44:46S.
- 44:47that was very similar to the Electra Mechanica Solo.
- 44:51The kicker is apparently they're going to cost You know, potentially as much as a
- 44:56full size car ain't nobody going to nobody in this country is going to buy that.
- 45:00I mean, I get it like, okay, on the surface, you look at it, you go.
- 45:03This is dumb.
- 45:04Right?
- 45:073 wheels is the starting point of bad.
- 45:09Okay, this
- 45:11is dumb.
- 45:12A F right?
- 45:13Like, why 1 person 2 people?
- 45:17Where are you going?
- 45:18Electric?
- 45:19I mean, negative, negative, negative corner, right?
- 45:23But then.
- 45:24I could see a point to play devil's advocate.
- 45:27People ride around on motorcycles.
- 45:30You can only have one person.
- 45:32Well, you can have more than one, but typically you only
- 45:35have one person on a motorcycle.
- 45:37You ain't carrying a lot of, you're not going to the local grocer and
- 45:41getting six bags of groceries and carrying them on your motorcycle home.
- 45:45You're running an errand.
- 45:46You're going to work with a backpack and, and, you know, whatever, that's it.
- 45:51So if you're living that life, maybe this is better for you.
- 45:56Cause at least when it's raining, your butthole isn't getting wet.
- 46:01Oh man.
- 46:04I think that in the first car, it's very mousy.
- 46:08I think it would be a very fun Halloween car.
- 46:10I also think that whoever designed this.
- 46:13Uh, his children just watched the Incredibles for the first time in Estonia.
- 46:18And because it looks like Mr.
- 46:19Incredible drives this car.
- 46:21It's it's wacko.
- 46:22Now I, I give you props.
- 46:23If it had four wheels, I'd be all over it.
- 46:25The three wheel thing really turns me off.
- 46:27I don't get it, but I also think of him and I go the Ape, which we
- 46:32know is, you know, all over the place in Italy is a three wheeler.
- 46:35They've been around forever.
- 46:36They're tiny.
- 46:37I could see those going electric.
- 46:38That'd be super useful.
- 46:39Wow.
- 46:40And I'm instantly reminded of the PLP 50 from Top Gear.
- 46:44Remember that little car he drove in an elevator all through the BBC building?
- 46:46Yeah.
- 46:47So, not so great.
- 46:49Cool concept, but I can't ever see these coming to fruition.
- 46:53I
- 46:53really like the micro, you know.
- 46:55Yeah.
- 46:56This isn't something that would take steam in this country.
- 47:00I mean, maybe in Europe.
- 47:02Again, you're up in your countryside, mountainside, and you're just trembling
- 47:06up and down and you don't want to ride on a moped, but then you don't want a car.
- 47:10I can see it,
- 47:12but.
- 47:13I need to point a few things out about the microlino.
- 47:15So if anybody listened to our ugly cars episode, it's very important.
- 47:19Okay.
- 47:19So go back and revisit that when you get a chance.
- 47:22This is the only thing I think that rivals the Multipla.
- 47:25In terms of like stupid placement of beltline, headlights, doors, it is,
- 47:30those, those headlights are tragic.
- 47:32And by the way, did you notice that's like a 23 inch wiper
- 47:36blade on a 13 inch windshield?
- 47:38Like how does that even work?
- 47:40Those headlights are integrated
- 47:42with the side mirrors.
- 47:43Come now, they've
- 47:45saved.
- 47:45This is a mess.
- 47:47This car is unsafe to drive in any condition, okay?
- 47:52I don't get it.
- 47:54How do you uh, how do you adjust the headlights?
- 47:56The mirror has to put, this is a mess.
- 47:59You adjust
- 47:59the headlights with the mirror.
- 48:00So you use the little mirror switch and the mirror goes,
- 48:03the headlights go the opposite.
- 48:05How do you get out?
- 48:06If you're in a front end collision,
- 48:07I want to see the front impact rating with the crash test dummies in this
- 48:12thing, by the way, where's the bumper?
- 48:14Get it?
- 48:15Because why wouldn't you just have a smart car?
- 48:18At this point.
- 48:19Yeah, I mean, because they're
- 48:20at least you're only going to fit 2 people in those and they're at
- 48:23least designed to be roll cages.
- 48:26They
- 48:26have
- 48:26proven
- 48:26the
- 48:26smart
- 48:27cars are extremely safe because the way they're built,
- 48:29but they're also not electric, but they
- 48:31could be, but they could be, and they're already rear wheel drive.
- 48:35They're actually already set up for it.
- 48:37A lot of smart cars, at least in Europe are.
- 48:39Three cylinder turbo diesels or something.
- 48:41I think they were here at least in Canada and North America and whatnot,
- 48:44but they'd be the perfect candidate.
- 48:45If you're going to go that route, just electrify a smart car and call it a day.
- 48:49I mean, maybe the problem is the smart cards too small because these things
- 48:53are, well, that Mike really knows probably smaller than a smart car.
- 48:57So if they fit some batteries in there, then you wouldn't, I would think
- 49:01it's possible on the, um, smart car.
- 49:04Honestly, we haven't paid much attention to smart cars.
- 49:07So that's something I'm going to have to look into to see what
- 49:10they're doing on the EV front.
- 49:12They must be doing something.
- 49:14Whatever Mercedes is doing
- 49:16well, they're slowly coming to the table as well.
- 49:18So
- 49:19I'll get a swatch watch at the same time that way for most people that
- 49:22don't know, smart is a cooperative investment between swatch and Mercedes.
- 49:28So that I won't digress too far on that, but we need to move into our.
- 49:32New segment called.
- 49:35We would be remiss.
- 49:38So I don't want to cover this one, but it's here.
- 49:42So we would
- 49:44much like Brad doesn't want to cover Corvettes.
- 49:46You get stuck with Tesla's now that's your thing.
- 49:50And I'm fine with that.
- 49:51It's just the latest gimmick that they're doing.
- 49:55You know, some people think it's quite clever.
- 49:58There's those that would say it's genius.
- 50:01I have a different definition for something that's genius.
- 50:05Being able to say open butthole for my electric charger door to pop open to me
- 50:14as a fully formed adult is not genius.
- 50:18For a 12 year old, yes, I could see this being quite hysterical.
- 50:24Thank you for bringing this to us.
- 50:27And you know, some people might think, Oh, this is just a joke.
- 50:30It came out in April, April fools.
- 50:32No, I fully believe this is no joke because I have ridden in
- 50:37a Tesla with the fart sounds turned on for the turn signals.
- 50:43So instead of click, click, click.
- 50:46So this is completely on par.
- 50:50with something musk would do.
- 50:52So I fully believe that you can say open butthole.
- 50:55Oh, but it gets better.
- 50:57Because if you watch the video that accompanies this particular episode,
- 51:01a gentleman goes through and reviews this particular voice command feature.
- 51:05There are variants to it.
- 51:06If you say open butthole, it opens the charge port.
- 51:09If you say close butthole, it closes the charge port.
- 51:13If you say open butthole, My butthole, it will open the trunk.
- 51:17Did you know that?
- 51:20You also want to know why this isn't genius?
- 51:23If we're going to anthropomorphize a vehicle, its butthole would
- 51:29not be on the side of it.
- 51:33Where energy is going into.
- 51:34Thank
- 51:34you.
- 51:35That's, that's my, my, that was going to be my point.
- 51:38It shouldn't be open butthole.
- 51:39It should be put it in your mouth.
- 51:44Oh
- 51:44yeah, because that
- 51:44makes it better.
- 51:46I mean, the mouth also isn't on the side.
- 51:49If you were going to like in the rear end of the car.
- 51:52The mouth is where fuel and energy goes in.
- 51:54I don't know.
- 51:55I mean, personally, I think
- 51:56this is just foreplay and dirty talk between Elon and Grimes and
- 52:01they just kind of translate it into.
- 52:03You know, Tesla production, somebody, he probably was, you know, getting
- 52:07down with, with grimes and, uh, he butt dialed somebody and, uh, somebody
- 52:14at work, you heard him say, Oh yeah, open your butthole, open your butthole.
- 52:18And they're like, okay, I guess we'll implement that into the.
- 52:23Yes, Mr.
- 52:24Musk.
- 52:24Yes, Mr.
- 52:25Musk.
- 52:25Right away, Mr.
- 52:26Musk.
- 52:26We'll take care of that.
- 52:29I mean, clearly it sells.
- 52:31People are into it.
- 52:32I don't know.
- 52:34Hot take.
- 52:34It's dumb.
- 52:35Speaking of dumb, let's talk about the new door handles on the Tesla.
- 52:39Oh, that's not gonna break.
- 52:41Right?
- 52:42The video, you kind of get a sneak peek here of the new Tesla Roadster.
- 52:45We heard about this on the drag racing episode with Bobby Parks.
- 52:48He's really excited about this car.
- 52:50Effing useless.
- 52:52I love that.
- 52:52I love that.
- 52:53The Tesla roaster is a coop.
- 52:56Yeah, right on.
- 52:58All counts.
- 52:59But this new door handle, you know, the current Teslas, the door
- 53:02handle kind of pops out at you.
- 53:03It's like electromechanical, and then you grab it, you know, all this kind of thing.
- 53:06This new one is swipe, and the best part of it is you get the glimpse of the new
- 53:10quote unquote Roadster or coop rather.
- 53:13And you get to see this guy trying a new door handle and he must swipe it like.
- 53:17four or five times and it doesn't react and I'm like, what is this?
- 53:21Would be the most infuriating thing on the planet for me.
- 53:24If this is how I have to now open my door.
- 53:26Apparently he was swiping up and you should have swiped down.
- 53:30I mean, I thought it was left and
- 53:32right.
- 53:33That's different, but it could be like,
- 53:35instead of swipe, they should call it foreplay.
- 53:38And he just didn't know how to, how to get the car to do what he wanted it to do.
- 53:42Oh my God.
- 53:44He should have swiped, right?
- 53:46Oh man.
- 53:47I, you know, I get, I get that that's where technology and innovation is taking
- 53:52us, but it's just like the more things get so technically complex like that.
- 53:57It's like there's simplicity in simple things that will
- 54:00always work like a door handle.
- 54:03Like a button on a, on a phone or, or, or on something, not some touch tone
- 54:09thing, but then the screen breaks and then you can't turn your AC on or off
- 54:12or something in your, your car, all these infotainment systems, you know,
- 54:15a dial, a button it's mechanical.
- 54:17Yeah, you can break it off if you're an idiot, but for the most
- 54:20part, these things last decades.
- 54:24I feel a
- 54:24rant coming.
- 54:25I mean, if you've ever used one of those Samsung TVs, and I'm sure
- 54:29there's other brands that do this with the touch front where there's
- 54:32no buttons, I have one of these.
- 54:34I've had the luxury of owning it for many years.
- 54:36I refuse to touch it anymore because it's infuriating to
- 54:40hit the volume 9, 000 times.
- 54:42Let me just go get the remote.
- 54:43So hopefully my key fob for Tesla will allow me to open the door
- 54:47without touching the stupid thing, because if it's anything like the
- 54:50Samsung TVs, it'll drive you nuts.
- 54:52That's all I'm saying.
- 54:53And how about how's it going to handle rain when it's pouring down rain and
- 54:56there's water flowing down the side or ice it ices on a winter morning and
- 55:00you're you're chiseling the ice off of it or pour pouring warm water to melt
- 55:04it because I can't open my door because
- 55:07you're wearing a glove so I can't sense that you're opening the door
- 55:10you got to get the new you got to get those new gloves with the the touch pads
- 55:14that you can use on your touch screens
- 55:16or you just don't buy how does
- 55:17that work when it's wet But I'll just
- 55:19leave
- 55:19that
- 55:20there.
- 55:20Let's just leave that.
- 55:20I don't know.
- 55:22I mean, I guess I, you know, maybe you, I mean, why don't you
- 55:25just make an app on your phone?
- 55:27Click the button and it opens.
- 55:29Swipe your phone.
- 55:31How do you get in when your phone's dead?
- 55:33You say open butthole and then a charging wire comes out and you can
- 55:37plug your phone in enough juice to
- 55:42Open my butthole.
- 55:43No, my butthole.
- 55:44No, no, no, no, my butthole.
- 55:47Can you
- 55:47imagine you're standing at the charging station?
- 55:52Somebody doesn't know what's going on.
- 55:55Oh,
- 55:56I'm thinking about the scenario where you go golfing with your boss and then you're
- 56:00going back to the cars after your, your, your round 18 and then you walk up to your
- 56:05car nonchalantly with your boss parked right next to and his, uh, S600 Mercedes,
- 56:10because that's what he's going to drive.
- 56:12And you just walk up and say casually, Tesla, open butthole.
- 56:16What is your boss going to think?
- 56:20He's going to say, do you have any gray poop on?
- 56:23He's
- 56:27He's going to say, uh, okay, you're going to, this is your last day.
- 56:32Goodbye.
- 56:33You know, chances are he's a 12 year old boy on the inside too.
- 56:37So he'd probably like it.
- 56:38I don't know.
- 56:40Meanwhile on planet Tesla.
- 56:42In other Tesla news, very unfortunate.
- 56:45There was a recent accident, uh, last weekend, actually not too far from
- 56:51my personal stomping grounds where a Tesla crashed into some trees.
- 56:57That crash caused an explosion, fire, et cetera, the car engulfed in flames.
- 57:04Varying reports saying the fire burned for four hours before it was put out versus,
- 57:10I don't know, it was put out immediately and the fire department just there
- 57:13for four hours, quenching, re ignition of the batteries, blah, blah, blah.
- 57:17Regardless of whether it was minutes or four hours, uh, That thing
- 57:22definitely burned long enough that there was nothing practically left.
- 57:27There was no interior, there was no roof, there was no hood,
- 57:30there were no body panels.
- 57:31I mean, granted, they might have ripped the doors off and everything
- 57:33and pushed them aside and weren't seen in the picture, but it was charred.
- 57:38The mystery of this right now, this happened in a neighborhood, this
- 57:42happened on a neighborhood street, leaving essentially a dead end, a cul
- 57:47de sac, an S shaped street, not even probably too long, as it was negotiating
- 57:54the first of the curve, the car lost control, ended up in this patch of trees,
- 57:58directly in front of people's houses.
- 58:00So obviously people heard the commotion or whatnot and called the
- 58:04fire department and called the police.
- 58:05The mystery of this is There were two people, uh, involved in this.
- 58:09Obviously, unfortunately, they did not survive.
- 58:13There was a passenger in the front passenger seat, and there
- 58:16was a person in the back seat.
- 58:19The authorities are very adamant in saying that there
- 58:22was nobody in the driver's seat.
- 58:25So, does that mean that this Tesla was put on autopilot, somehow, I don't know
- 58:32how because I don't know enough about their autopilot system and engaging it,
- 58:36somehow got up to a quote, high speed, okay, and it must have been a high enough
- 58:41speed to careen off the road and then explode into trees, because I would
- 58:45hope that the neighborhood speed of 20 miles an hour, if you hit a tree, you
- 58:50wouldn't burst into flames, because every fricking accident would be Chernobyl.
- 58:55How did that happen?
- 58:57You know, the initial report, you know, the authorities contacting Tesla, etc.
- 59:01Elon is being very, you know, he's saying that no, the data that we
- 59:06pulled, that autopilot was not engaged, this, that, and the other.
- 59:09I mean, you know, how can that be possible if there was no
- 59:11body found in the driver's seat?
- 59:15You know, how did this happen?
- 59:17And these weren't 20 something year old folks.
- 59:19These were Older gentlemen, 59, 69, you know, so, you know, if they were 20
- 59:24year olds, you could, you could argue, Oh yeah, he was in the driver's seat.
- 59:27He's showing off.
- 59:28He jumped into the back seat.
- 59:29Oh, look, my car drives itself.
- 59:31I have a hard time believing, you know, a 59 or 69 year
- 59:35old's going to pull that stunt.
- 59:36I could believe that there are people.
- 59:38Unfortunately, silly enough to be like, Oh, look at my car.
- 59:41It can drive itself.
- 59:41I'm not going to sit in the driver's seat.
- 59:43I don't know why you'd do that, because you could still prove my car
- 59:46drives itself and sit in the fricking driver's seat, like a sane, rational
- 59:50person in case something goes wrong.
- 59:52I don't know.
- 59:53Maybe there was someone in the driver's seat.
- 59:56Maybe they left the driver's seat after the accident, somehow trying to get out
- 59:59from the back of the car for some reason.
- 1:00:02With the fire and all that, I mean, I don't know, it's very strange.
- 1:00:07It'll be interesting to see when the, the official black box and all that
- 1:00:11stuff, you know, other third parties get to see the data to confirm or, or not
- 1:00:16confirm whether autopilot was on or not.
- 1:00:19I mean, this is a very bizarre, tragic accident that didn't need to happen.
- 1:00:23Nobody's going to comment on this story.
- 1:00:25I mean, I don't, I don't, I, there's not much more to say on this.
- 1:00:30I'm sure more things will develop out of it.
- 1:00:33It's, it's very bizarre, very unfortunate in advertising in such a way that makes
- 1:00:37it sound like it's fully autonomous.
- 1:00:39And it, again, people, it, there is no such thing right
- 1:00:43now as a fully autonomous.
- 1:00:45Personal vehicle out there.
- 1:00:47Okay.
- 1:00:48None of the manufacturers have them.
- 1:00:50They, they are driver assists.
- 1:00:52And it's not just Tesla, Cadillac and Volvo.
- 1:00:55I mean, all of these companies are using this not deceiving marketing, but I
- 1:01:00think, you know what I'm trying to say?
- 1:01:01Well,
- 1:01:01they're all, they all misleading
- 1:01:03marketing.
- 1:01:03They all claim that they have, you know, the driver assist and all that,
- 1:01:06but I really think Tesla has been the most negligent in the way that
- 1:01:10they advertise it, where they very much have always made it sound like
- 1:01:14it's this fully autonomous thing.
- 1:01:17No, it's not guys.
- 1:01:18The other, the other people, and maybe it's their learnings from Tesla,
- 1:01:22I don't think quite go that far.
- 1:01:25They make it a little bit more clear that it's, You know, level
- 1:01:28whatever, and it's just driver's aids and, and that's what they are.
- 1:01:31You're still supposed to be in control of the vehicle.
- 1:01:33You're not supposed to be reclined back and sleeping.
- 1:01:37You should still be paying attention at any rate.
- 1:01:40Please do not just blindly let your car that doesn't know what
- 1:01:43it's doing drive down the road because these people unfortunately,
- 1:01:47you know, lost their own lives.
- 1:01:49This was a neighborhood granted.
- 1:01:51It was, I think, pretty late at night, but what if it wasn't?
- 1:01:53And there were children out or, you know, a family coming home in their minivan
- 1:01:57and, you know, you crash into somebody else, like, don't do stupid stuff,
- 1:02:01people, public service announcement
- 1:02:03that leads into my next public service announcement.
- 1:02:06This is going to be kind of a, if anybody's seen family guy, you know,
- 1:02:09you don't really grind my gears.
- 1:02:11This is going to be one of those things.
- 1:02:13So I, I saw something on the news the other day.
- 1:02:16Uh, and I had to get up and get the actual article, but there's
- 1:02:20a thing called zoom zombies that are out there roaming the roads.
- 1:02:24Uh, and apparently this is something that's real and true.
- 1:02:28Basically the, the, the moral of the story is people are working from home
- 1:02:32more now they're, they're telecommuting, which means they have a lot of meetings
- 1:02:35and those meetings are all on zoom or various, you know, tele, teleconference
- 1:02:39systems, but apparently because they have to quote unquote focus harder.
- 1:02:45When they're on a zoom or teleconferencing call, if they're, if they go out
- 1:02:52immediately after, they shouldn't go out immediately after because they're
- 1:02:55too distracted to actually drive.
- 1:02:58And then they're causing accidents and they're going out on the road
- 1:03:00because they're not focused enough.
- 1:03:03Yes.
- 1:03:03Eric's case.
- 1:03:04And Tanya's face, this is completely absurd.
- 1:03:09So here's my thing
- 1:03:10flag on the play
- 1:03:13comes up
- 1:03:13with this crap.
- 1:03:15I don't know.
- 1:03:16It's it was on NBC for the, you know, that I, that I saw it as a tri DC, they,
- 1:03:24I believe that's where I saw it as either NBC four or Fox or something like that,
- 1:03:27but basically my thing is, okay, yes.
- 1:03:32Distracted driving is a thing.
- 1:03:34But people just don't know how to effing drive anyway.
- 1:03:39I think
- 1:03:39that, I think that people who have been home for so long and
- 1:03:43maybe haven't driven in a while.
- 1:03:44Oh my God.
- 1:03:45It's so absurd.
- 1:03:47The amount of lunacy I see.
- 1:03:49Yes.
- 1:03:50You can tell,
- 1:03:51you can tell that people are kind of like out of practice because
- 1:03:54they're not used to doing it anymore or having the situational awareness.
- 1:03:58We talk about that a lot, you know, in racing that they used to have in the past.
- 1:04:01I don't know if they had a lot to begin with.
- 1:04:03That's a pretty marginal.
- 1:04:05Terrible drivers before they are complete lunatics.
- 1:04:09Now, I
- 1:04:09thought, I thought you were going to say these zoom zombies where people
- 1:04:13doing zoom calls now in their cars while they're going to like somewhere else.
- 1:04:18The funny thing is I've seen that too, but that's not what the story was about.
- 1:04:22It was about just having a call.
- 1:04:24Leaving the call and then getting in your car and drive.
- 1:04:26I will, I will say
- 1:04:27this, the few times that I've been out like with normal traffic since
- 1:04:33COVID hit, you know, in the last year, the speeds on the roads have
- 1:04:38gone up because once traffic kind of dissipated, everybody was driving.
- 1:04:42Like, you know, you're doing, let's just say you're doing the speed
- 1:04:44limit 65, maybe 70 on your highway.
- 1:04:47You know, a lot of the highways, you know, out of the greater
- 1:04:49metropolitan area here, the speed limits are higher you're doing 70.
- 1:04:53You're getting past like you're parked.
- 1:04:55I mean, there's people doing 90, a hundred.
- 1:04:57I'm like, where are you going?
- 1:04:59There's nowhere to go.
- 1:05:00Everything's closed.
- 1:05:01Is it just because you need, you have cabin fever and you need to get it off
- 1:05:04of your, you know, out of your system.
- 1:05:06I just don't get, go to the track for that.
- 1:05:08Please go to the drag strip, whatever,
- 1:05:10even more than that.
- 1:05:11Like, I don't think like people just can't drive.
- 1:05:14I think majority of the people out there.
- 1:05:16Just do not know how to drive.
- 1:05:17And it's because of the driving requirements and these municipalities
- 1:05:21and jurisdictions and everything.
- 1:05:22They basically, if you can fog up a mirror, it's one of our, uh, one
- 1:05:25of our members favorite sayings.
- 1:05:27If you can fog up a mirror, you can drive.
- 1:05:29They're handing out driver's license, like they're candy.
- 1:05:32When you go to the DMV, you know, I took the driver's test, Eric.
- 1:05:35I mean, all of us that when it was a rite of passage, when we turned 16, you
- 1:05:39know, you, you go for the driver's test.
- 1:05:42It was in a parking lot here in Maryland.
- 1:05:44You mean you didn't know street driving or anything you basically,
- 1:05:48if you could do one, two or three things, yeah, you get a license.
- 1:05:51That's great.
- 1:05:51That does not mean you know how to drive.
- 1:05:54No, no, no, it doesn't.
- 1:05:56I mean, and I guess everybody needs to approach it differently because
- 1:06:00they're every state does it differently.
- 1:06:01There's different driving tests.
- 1:06:02Now us America as a whole compared to European way of doing drivers test.
- 1:06:07I mean, they get drivers licenses way later.
- 1:06:09There's all these courses a billion hours.
- 1:06:11You know, it's it's.
- 1:06:12very strict and very, very difficult to get a license, or
- 1:06:15at least it used to be here.
- 1:06:17You know, the joke, you know, when we were coming up, it was like, man, you could get
- 1:06:20your license out of a Cracker Jack box.
- 1:06:21It wasn't that hard to get.
- 1:06:23Now, you know, the trend is there's less and less, you know, young drivers.
- 1:06:27They they're waiting longer to drive.
- 1:06:29They have less interest in driving.
- 1:06:30That's like a whole nother thing, but you're right.
- 1:06:33I think the system, the education system has kind of failed.
- 1:06:37When it comes to driving now, I'm not saying all of us need to go out
- 1:06:39and, you know, do HPD or autocross or take some of the schools.
- 1:06:43Now, there's some streaks classes.
- 1:06:46Exactly.
- 1:06:46Exactly.
- 1:06:47Tire rack sponsors that they're great.
- 1:06:49I'm, I'm a certified street survival coach.
- 1:06:51It's a great program.
- 1:06:52If you haven't looked into it before, you know, it does count
- 1:06:55towards like advanced driving credits, you know, things like that.
- 1:06:57So it's, you're not necessarily going to the track, but there's a lot of things
- 1:07:01to learn there, but accident avoidance, situational awareness, car control, you
- 1:07:05know, all these different kinds of things.
- 1:07:06So if you have the extra time and you have the ability to, you know,
- 1:07:10carve out a Saturday or Sunday to go do that, I highly recommend it.
- 1:07:14I personally think that driving is a privilege.
- 1:07:16It's not a right.
- 1:07:18Now that may rub people the wrong way because you need to be able
- 1:07:21to get to work and stuff like that and public transportation
- 1:07:23isn't what it should be here.
- 1:07:25And okay, if we're going to make driving right, then I don't think you should
- 1:07:28be able to monetize the driver schools.
- 1:07:32I think it should be for free.
- 1:07:34And I think it should be more robust.
- 1:07:36And I think that yes, you're right.
- 1:07:38I think street survival should be a mandatory part of the driver
- 1:07:42education before you get your license.
- 1:07:45I can't agree.
- 1:07:46I can't agree more.
- 1:07:46I mean, if anything needs an overhaul, it's definitely the way we do
- 1:07:51driver's education for people getting their licenses for the first time.
- 1:07:55That's for sure.
- 1:07:56So speaking of craziness on the highway, Brad,
- 1:07:59right back in our backyard here, there was some more lunacy going
- 1:08:04on, uh, right over in college park, uh, college park area on four 95
- 1:08:09near university of Maryland for anybody.
- 1:08:12These very well could be Maryland students.
- 1:08:14I mean, you never know.
- 1:08:15Now they do this a lot out in California.
- 1:08:18I mean, you see it all the time, but basically they shut down the highway.
- 1:08:21To do burnouts and doughnuts and all kinds of idiocy, you know, that was
- 1:08:26reserved for cars and coffee, but I guess there wasn't a big enough audience.
- 1:08:30So they're doing it on the highways now and it's completely absurd.
- 1:08:33There's a video of it.
- 1:08:34From what I understand, the one or two of the people have already been charged with
- 1:08:39reckless driving and various other things.
- 1:08:41The police know who you are.
- 1:08:43Moral of the story.
- 1:08:44Just don't be an idiot.
- 1:08:46Please do stupid things.
- 1:08:48Win super prizes.
- 1:08:50I mean, first of all, so I hadn't heard that it happened and then when I saw
- 1:08:54this, I went from perfectly calm to so enraged because the blatant stupidity
- 1:09:03and recklessness of this is just mind boggling because not only, you
- 1:09:08know, are they stopping the beltway?
- 1:09:10To do freaking doughnuts, like a tool.
- 1:09:14They were doing 90 miles an hour, supposedly down
- 1:09:18powder mill down route to 12.
- 1:09:21So they came down route to 12, the speed limit is not 90 miles an hour there.
- 1:09:25No, I think
- 1:09:26I was just on two 12 and I think it's like 40, 40.
- 1:09:30Yeah.
- 1:09:30I was going to say 40 at best
- 1:09:32if it's yeah.
- 1:09:3345, definitely.
- 1:09:34Probably not, but 35, 40.
- 1:09:36Yeah, probably depending where you are on it.
- 1:09:39So they probably, they came down off.
- 1:09:41212 onto the beltway then.
- 1:09:43And then they, they stopped traffic to do freaking donuts.
- 1:09:46I would not only melt this idiot's driver's license, but I would, I would
- 1:09:50have him standing there, pressing the crusher button and crush that car.
- 1:09:55Well, I got it.
- 1:09:56I got so many questions.
- 1:09:57Like, how does one block the beltway for one to do this without
- 1:10:01other people with them?
- 1:10:03Well, the
- 1:10:03thing is, so I guess you create a roadblock because we already know people
- 1:10:07are zoom zombies and they're not going to.
- 1:10:08See you.
- 1:10:09So you're just going to like lemmings plow into these people.
- 1:10:12And then to do this, it's, it's absolutely asinine.
- 1:10:15But the other thing is, do they not realize, and I have to say this
- 1:10:19again, do they not realize there is closed circuit cameras on the
- 1:10:24beltways in the DC metropolitan area.
- 1:10:27They are always watching the cars.
- 1:10:30They know who you are.
- 1:10:31As Brad said, they will see your license.
- 1:10:33You think you're getting away with it?
- 1:10:35They've already got you on camera before it even started.
- 1:10:38You know, so if you, if you ever watch the morning news,
- 1:10:40it's called the traffic cameras.
- 1:10:42The best are everywhere.
- 1:10:44The best part is these idiots posted on Instagram and their, their TikTok
- 1:10:48and their, their various socials, you know, to get recognition.
- 1:10:51What pisses me off even more is it's only an 1, 800 fine.
- 1:10:58Are you freaking kidding me?
- 1:11:00That should be jail time.
- 1:11:01Your car should be
- 1:11:01impounded and crushed.
- 1:11:02Yeah.
- 1:11:03That's, that's bonkers.
- 1:11:0518,
- 1:11:05000 my
- 1:11:06butt.
- 1:11:07That's reckless endangerment of like the public.
- 1:11:09I mean it's it's insane.
- 1:11:11Is it like, I know it's Maryland, it's not Virginia, but it wasn't like
- 1:11:15Virginia speeding tickets at some time, something like ridiculous, like.
- 1:11:19Don't
- 1:11:19bring out the blowtorch and like melt your license
- 1:11:21in front of you.
- 1:11:22In Virginia, they, you go directly to jail.
- 1:11:24You do not pass go, you go to jail.
- 1:11:27And you go
- 1:11:28to jail for speeding.
- 1:11:29You go, if you're 50 over or 80 miles, over 80 miles an hour,
- 1:11:33it's an immediate go to jail.
- 1:11:35Here's the thing.
- 1:11:35I can't say this enough.
- 1:11:37I know people don't believe me.
- 1:11:39They're like, Oh, it's so expensive!
- 1:11:40Blah, blah, blah!
- 1:11:42Go to the track.
- 1:11:43Okay.
- 1:11:44How
- 1:11:44many track days do you get for 1, 800?
- 1:11:47That's not even my point.
- 1:11:48That's not even my point.
- 1:11:49My point is within a weekend, I guarantee you, you will have an epiphany.
- 1:11:54You will realize you are not Schumacher and it will all get out of your system.
- 1:11:59After going to the track for so many years, I just drive differently.
- 1:12:02I don't have the need anymore.
- 1:12:04Just get it out of your system somewhere safe in a controlled
- 1:12:07environment and go have fun.
- 1:12:08It will cost you less in the long run.
- 1:12:11So I'll go with yes and no on that.
- 1:12:13I'll say yes for people that are, that tend to be the people
- 1:12:17that just speed all the time.
- 1:12:19Like they constantly just want to be speeding and, and, and that kind of thing.
- 1:12:23Like go, go do this in a controlled environment and you'll learn
- 1:12:28very quickly that you don't know what the hell you're doing.
- 1:12:30and that you need to respect the speed a whole lot more and shit
- 1:12:33happens, can happen very very fast and it will happen very fast when
- 1:12:37you're doing things inappropriately.
- 1:12:39So the no is I think someone like this asshat, to be quite blunt,
- 1:12:43would be the person that gets his butt thrown out at the track.
- 1:12:47because they're endangering every other person out there being that a hole
- 1:12:52that's not listening to the instructor who thinks they know better and they're
- 1:12:55just a freaking like suicide mission going around and then they get ejected.
- 1:12:59That's probably this type of person.
- 1:13:01And this goes back to my previous point with the zoom zombies.
- 1:13:04Why do these people still have licenses?
- 1:13:07I don't know.
- 1:13:07I don't know.
- 1:13:07Why was it not taken away is immediately canceled.
- 1:13:11Done.
- 1:13:12You're done.
- 1:13:12You, you have no more license.
- 1:13:13You can, why do
- 1:13:14we let,
- 1:13:14here's a bus pass,
- 1:13:16people that drive drunk and you get pulled over or whatever, you know, they get to
- 1:13:21go back out and, you know, kill somebody.
- 1:13:23I don't know.
- 1:13:23Exactly.
- 1:13:24That, that shouldn't, yeah.
- 1:13:26None of that.
- 1:13:27It's, it's
- 1:13:28all above our pay grades.
- 1:13:29That's, that's, that's.
- 1:13:30That's just it.
- 1:13:30Right.
- 1:13:31So, you know, let's switch to some lighter news.
- 1:13:34How about that?
- 1:13:34So we wouldn't even want to be
- 1:13:35in
- 1:13:35a
- 1:13:35story.
- 1:13:36Oh, I wish it was, it's sort of like a Florida man.
- 1:13:39So it involves the Southwest of the United States though.
- 1:13:43So keeping with our lost and found theme from earlier Ford lost a
- 1:13:49turbine powered semi truck in 1964.
- 1:13:52So more affectionately referred to as Big Red, the 600 horsepower turbine
- 1:13:58powered semi debuted at the same auto show as the original Mustang
- 1:14:04in 1964 and was subsequently lost.
- 1:14:08And has been searched for for now, you know, 50, 60 years and it was
- 1:14:12found, by the way, very recently.
- 1:14:14And the question that comes to mind is how does 1 lose what is known as a
- 1:14:19double or, you know, you've seen them on the road, the UPS trucks with the 2
- 1:14:23containers behind the truck, a double coming in at a whopping 96 feet long.
- 1:14:29This is like losing an ocean liner or losing a building.
- 1:14:34Okay.
- 1:14:34It's bright fire engine red all the way through very distinct vehicle,
- 1:14:40uh, even for a semi, because it was a car shaped kind of nose.
- 1:14:44There was only, it said Ford turbine on the front.
- 1:14:46I mean, I don't know how you lose basically a hundred foot long vehicle.
- 1:14:52I mean, what must've happened is they put it in storage.
- 1:14:55The dude who put it in storage.
- 1:14:57Passed away, moved on with life, they burnt the Rolodex and
- 1:15:02didn't have his phone number.
- 1:15:04And nobody knew, it was only one dude, one dude in charge of Big Red.
- 1:15:09And when that person left or, you know, whatever, nobody knew where he was.
- 1:15:14His name was Milton and he also had a red swing line stapler.
- 1:15:18That's, that's all I know.
- 1:15:20I mean, that's the only thing that makes sense.
- 1:15:22Oh, then he's, he's in the basement.
- 1:15:24My paycheck, my paycheck, my stapler.
- 1:15:27Outside of that, I discovered something new.
- 1:15:29You know, I mentioned ugly car episode.
- 1:15:31You know, again, if you haven't listened to that one, check it out.
- 1:15:34There's also a B sides on Patreon full length B side episode.
- 1:15:38As a matter of fact, I have another car to add to the ugliest cars list.
- 1:15:42Something you've probably never heard of.
- 1:15:44It's a 1973 Moe's Safari car, suck that in, do a Google search or check
- 1:15:53the follow on article to this episode to get a glimpse of it yourself.
- 1:15:57Are the body panels leather?
- 1:16:00There is so much wrong with this car.
- 1:16:01Like that's,
- 1:16:02that's not metal that saw, or is that metal?
- 1:16:05It looks like a
- 1:16:06couch.
- 1:16:07So first of all, it's built on a truck chassis for one because it was designed
- 1:16:11to go into Africa for big game hunting.
- 1:16:14So problem number one right there.
- 1:16:16Number two, it does look like something out of the desert for sure.
- 1:16:21It has that very military look to it.
- 1:16:24I think my seven year old could design something better than this.
- 1:16:28I'm
- 1:16:29right.
- 1:16:30It's definitely wrapped in like vinyl.
- 1:16:32It's wrapped in Naugahyde.
- 1:16:33So it's fake leather.
- 1:16:35There's a lot of really cool features to this.
- 1:16:37No, no, no, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
- 1:16:40There are some cool features here.
- 1:16:42There are some cool features.
- 1:16:43Okay.
- 1:16:43First of all, electromechanical convertible top.
- 1:16:46It's kind of cool ahead of its time.
- 1:16:471973.
- 1:16:49It has three front seats, like a McLaren F1.
- 1:16:52Kind of awesome.
- 1:16:53It has a fold away back area for like laying down and doing
- 1:16:59the snipering of the big game.
- 1:17:00So can you, does it move, does it fold down automatically if
- 1:17:04you say open the buttholes?
- 1:17:07No, but it has other amenities because back then it was the
- 1:17:10only thing you could talk to.
- 1:17:12In the Mo's safari car was the AM FM CB radio.
- 1:17:17Remember Peter Klein talked about that on our music and
- 1:17:19cars episode earlier this month.
- 1:17:22So yeah, it's got a lot of like international harvester stuff on it.
- 1:17:26Wait, wait, wait, wait.
- 1:17:27You forgot about the best part.
- 1:17:29What's that?
- 1:17:29The side draft exhaust?
- 1:17:31I love the hood ornament.
- 1:17:33Yeah, yeah, that whole grill is amazing.
- 1:17:36That hood ornament definitely looks like something out of Indiana Jones
- 1:17:40and the, uh, the Ark of the Covenant.
- 1:17:42It is definitely very militaristic and diplomatic looking.
- 1:17:45I mean, there's, there's so much wrong and so much right
- 1:17:48with this car at the same time.
- 1:17:50Yeah, you gotta check it out, but I will say this.
- 1:17:52It was on bring a trailer.
- 1:17:54We posted a link to it and the bid got up to a whopping 90, 000, right?
- 1:18:01So one of,
- 1:18:02I'm looking at like a closeup of this butthole, it's fuel port, you know, we've
- 1:18:07got the Naga hide here and then it's like, Metal strapping runs down like
- 1:18:12this piece of metal strapping is riveted.
- 1:18:15Wow.
- 1:18:16Home Depot.
- 1:18:17I love the fact that it's got sliding doors like a minivan.
- 1:18:22Yeah.
- 1:18:22It's all the things, dude.
- 1:18:23So sliding doors so you can lay down and shoot out of it.
- 1:18:26Like I said, three seats, bucket seats.
- 1:18:28By the way, they're kind of, it has a total, so you
- 1:18:30can, you can shoot game, you can hunt game out of it.
- 1:18:33Yeah, exactly.
- 1:18:33Without it leaving your seat.
- 1:18:35So
- 1:18:35apparently three of these.
- 1:18:37Concept vehicles were built, and then the company went bankrupt, and
- 1:18:41that was pretty much the end of that.
- 1:18:43I can't imagine why.
- 1:18:44Cost too much Nalgahide.
- 1:18:46Yes.
- 1:18:47Much like Another company that only built three cars and went bankrupt doing it.
- 1:18:53A lesser known supercar manufacturer by the name of Isdera was a ex
- 1:19:00Mercedes engineer who went off into the Alps of Switzerland and decided
- 1:19:05to start his own car company.
- 1:19:07He built three cars.
- 1:19:09And one of the three, the more popular and more recognizable one is the Ator I
- 1:19:16one 12, but the Gen two car, the Imperator 1 0 8, I was recently up for auction.
- 1:19:24Probably not too many is Dara fans out there outside of Tanya, who I know is
- 1:19:28a fan and knows the brand, but, uh.
- 1:19:30Yeah, I thought it was kind of cool to see that pop up recently.
- 1:19:33It's just not a car you hear of, but it has been around
- 1:19:35for a very, very long time.
- 1:19:36So look at these, uh, three of three cars out there in the wild.
- 1:19:40This car is actually really, really cool looking.
- 1:19:43I'm a big fan and I love those like three 45 rear tires or whatever.
- 1:19:48Oh, wait, I got to the interior.
- 1:19:50I take it back before you move into another story, Eric, you skipped
- 1:19:54a story.
- 1:19:54Oh, I know I'm getting back to it to round out our ugly cars.
- 1:19:59Not because the one Oh eight I is not a pretty car, right?
- 1:20:02Let's just.
- 1:20:03The 112 was a much better looking car, but I recently came across
- 1:20:07an advertisement, you know, soliciting me to come visit CarMax.
- 1:20:11And I don't know how I got on this list, but it was the CarMax unicorn
- 1:20:16blog telling me that I needed to come check out this quick hit manual
- 1:20:21transmission 2010 Chevrolet HHR SS low miles, reasonably priced in white.
- 1:20:31Is it still for sale?
- 1:20:32There might be somebody out there looking for one.
- 1:20:35I'm
- 1:20:35still holding out for a brand new one.
- 1:20:40I mean, this one only has 28, 000 miles.
- 1:20:4228, 000 miles.
- 1:20:44You are correct.
- 1:20:45How much are they asking for it?
- 1:20:47It's a bargain for 16, nine, nine, eight.
- 1:20:50You can get a brand
- 1:20:51new dot start for that and not be made fun of nearly as much
- 1:20:56that this SS would beat it on a quarter mile
- 1:20:59once there's so much.
- 1:21:03There's so much,
- 1:21:04like the fastest lap around the Nurburgring.
- 1:21:07This is so much wrong with the
- 1:21:08take in
- 1:21:11a terrible
- 1:21:12club member.
- 1:21:14Your car is waiting for you at CarMax
- 1:21:17with a red bow on top of it.
- 1:21:19Big red bow.
- 1:21:20All right.
- 1:21:21So I think it's time now for us to switch into our final segment.
- 1:21:25We need to go behind the pit wall and talk about motorsports and GTM news.
- 1:21:29So first up on the docket, I want to talk about stock car racing, not to be
- 1:21:34confused with NASCAR, but in Brazil.
- 1:21:38They have a stock car series.
- 1:21:40This came across my desk via motorsport.
- 1:21:42tv.
- 1:21:43And I was really, really intrigued.
- 1:21:46Definite clickbait.
- 1:21:46I was like, what is this all about?
- 1:21:48Because it says in the intro catch legendary drivers, Felipe Masa, Rubens
- 1:21:54Barrichello, Ricardo Zonta, Tony Kanan, and more as part of the bumper list of.
- 1:21:59Entries in this year's Brazilian stock car series.
- 1:22:03I was like, all right, wait a minute.
- 1:22:04So I click into this and I'm looking at it and it actually debuts on April
- 1:22:0924th and there's going to be a series of these, these races starring a lot of
- 1:22:13these folks that, you know, and what it turns out to be is a bunch of Chevy Cruzes
- 1:22:18and Toyota Corollas that are apparently still being made in South America.
- 1:22:20And it's basically South American touring car series.
- 1:22:24It looks pretty cool.
- 1:22:26I'm definitely interested now.
- 1:22:27They got me with stock car racing.
- 1:22:29Not that I'm the biggest NASCAR fan in the world, but I still think it's
- 1:22:32pretty cool to see some GR Corollas going up against some Chevy Cruzes
- 1:22:37and other vehicles in this series.
- 1:22:39So you had me at GR.
- 1:22:40Right.
- 1:22:41So speaking of GRs.
- 1:22:43Yeah.
- 1:22:43There's, um, you know, more GR yaris fun, you know, another video out there.
- 1:22:48I guess somebody out at Hockenheim ring got a hold of a GR yaris
- 1:22:53and, uh, they were racing it on a, on a track day or whatever.
- 1:22:57They had a look like an instructor in the car and they're crazy.
- 1:23:01I'm just gonna start off with how crazy they are over there to be
- 1:23:04doing a fricking track day and they ain't wearing helmets or anything.
- 1:23:07I mean, I know.
- 1:23:09You know, you shouldn't be crashing and all that.
- 1:23:11And those instances are quite low, but shit still happens.
- 1:23:15And you want to be wearing head protection, but at any rate,
- 1:23:20especially since this guy doesn't even have the windows open.
- 1:23:22So if your head flapped to the side, you'd crap now.
- 1:23:25No
- 1:23:25point buys.
- 1:23:26They're passing without point buys.
- 1:23:27I mean, they're used
- 1:23:28blinkers.
- 1:23:29Maybe they were, I don't know.
- 1:23:31At any rate, it's a guy in his Yaris and he gets all excited and
- 1:23:35It's basically him behind a Supra, a new Supra, um, the whole time.
- 1:23:40He doesn't get around him, obviously.
- 1:23:42The Supra is still more powerful, but the Supra didn't exactly walk away either.
- 1:23:46Now I'm not going to say that like both of these people were driving to the full
- 1:23:50potential of the respective vehicles.
- 1:23:53Cause the Supra was definitely very squirrely through a lot of corners.
- 1:23:57So that person clearly wasn't probably driving.
- 1:24:00Full potential of that car, because I imagine it would eventually walk away.
- 1:24:04But it's still Yaris fun.
- 1:24:05It's always fun to see what's going on with Yarises that we'll never get here.
- 1:24:09I also think it's probably the most realistic comparison or showdown
- 1:24:14we've seen between the GR Yaris and the Supra compared to the things
- 1:24:17we've reported on in the past.
- 1:24:18All these, we did it in the rain backwards at night on an eighth mile oval and
- 1:24:22the, the Super, you know, had three cylinders removed and all these stupid
- 1:24:26tests that they've done against the GRRs.
- 1:24:28These were two dudes hooning around on Hockenheim ring and
- 1:24:32whether they could drive or not.
- 1:24:34I think it really showed some of the potential of the GRRs and I'm with you.
- 1:24:39I want to drive one of these.
- 1:24:41Chris Harris recently, you know, posted about driving one on his
- 1:24:45Instagram feed and he was all about, he's like, this thing's fantastic.
- 1:24:48It's a boot.
- 1:24:49And I think this, the GRRs really is.
- 1:24:51The newest, best hot hatch that's out there.
- 1:24:54And I hate to say, being a long time, you know, VW, GTI fan or
- 1:24:58whatever, you can keep them.
- 1:25:00You know, I want to try this new Toyota.
- 1:25:02I will say it's apparently faster than a Miata.
- 1:25:07I didn't notice that too.
- 1:25:08Cause he did pass the Miata.
- 1:25:10Like it was parked.
- 1:25:12That was really an MX 30.
- 1:25:13Who doesn't pass a Miata like it's parked?
- 1:25:16It's
- 1:25:16true.
- 1:25:17So speaking of other showdowns, Car Magazine is at it again.
- 1:25:21911 versus M4.
- 1:25:23Whoa.
- 1:25:25I mean, this is a battle as old as time, right?
- 1:25:27The 911 versus the M3.
- 1:25:29The M3 is now the M4, depending on the number of doors that you select.
- 1:25:34I hate to say it's pretty ugly.
- 1:25:36I mean, it's, it's up there with the HHR and some of these other
- 1:25:39cars we talked about, but I mean, do we really care anymore?
- 1:25:43I hate to say the 911, I think has transcended into the supercar world,
- 1:25:48especially with the turbo and the turbo S and all the other variants of the 911.
- 1:25:52So yeah, the one guy that buys a base model, nine 11, maybe he can
- 1:25:56compare it to the M four, but.
- 1:25:58I think there's other cars that compared to the M4 now.
- 1:26:01I mean, I think it's kind of lost some of its luster in a way.
- 1:26:04Maybe it's better suited against, Oh, I don't know the Mustang 350, you know,
- 1:26:08some of these other cars that would, it would play in that sandbox a little
- 1:26:12more than with the nine 11, which is, you know, chomping at the heels of
- 1:26:15the Ferraris and the lotuses and all the other cars that are out there,
- 1:26:19you know, what do you think, Brad?
- 1:26:21I think you're right.
- 1:26:22I think the nine 11 is in a completely different ballpark.
- 1:26:25I don't think personally anybody actually buys a base nine 11.
- 1:26:29I mean, they're, they're always tacking on 20, 000 worth of options and extras
- 1:26:33and performance mods and stuff like that.
- 1:26:35That's just to get wheels.
- 1:26:36Yeah.
- 1:26:37So I don't know.
- 1:26:39I'm tired of the.
- 1:26:41The M four I, I've been over the M four ever since there was an M four.
- 1:26:47Give me back an E 46 M three and I'll be perfectly happy.
- 1:26:51And this part, yeah, when
- 1:26:52BMWs were BMWs.
- 1:26:53Yeah.
- 1:26:53Can
- 1:26:53I just say, it actually doesn't look okay.
- 1:26:56Don't say it.
- 1:26:56Don't say it.
- 1:26:57' cause it's not true.
- 1:26:58I don't think it looks that hideous the more I look at
- 1:27:02it, but I will say it looks.
- 1:27:05Like it's lifted.
- 1:27:06It looks like an SUV when I look at it from the side, I can't get
- 1:27:10over that new grill and I
- 1:27:12hate what makes the grill worse is the license plate placement because they put
- 1:27:17it right in the middle of the grills.
- 1:27:19Like, what the hell is the point?
- 1:27:20Like, you got something stuck in your teeth, you know, hold on.
- 1:27:23Let me get, let me scrape that out
- 1:27:26so bad.
- 1:27:27So let's get back to some motor sports news.
- 1:27:29Brad, let's go to your favorite discipline.
- 1:27:31Uh, everybody rejoice because F1 is back.
- 1:27:34Everybody but Eric, I should say.
- 1:27:36Uh, if it's not a rally, he doesn't care.
- 1:27:39F1 is back a couple of weeks ago.
- 1:27:41Fernando Alonso made his debut or his redebut coming back to F1 after a short
- 1:27:47stint in the world endurance racing WEC.
- 1:27:52He also had attempted some IndyCar, but he decided to come back to F1, his home.
- 1:27:58He drives for Alpine and it was his first race and his first race with Alpine and it
- 1:28:05basically just like every single race he had with McLaren, uh, and it ended with a
- 1:28:10DNF because he had an issue with the car.
- 1:28:13But if you really pay attention to what happened, it wasn't because
- 1:28:17of anything the car did or anything he did or anything like that.
- 1:28:21It was because of a sandwich.
- 1:28:24Excuse me, what?
- 1:28:26Yes, someone's Subway Wrapper, or Jersey Mike's, uh, one of the mechanics
- 1:28:31I guess was eating Jersey Mike's, no I don't think that's actually what
- 1:28:34happened, but apparently a sandwich wrapper got stuck in one of the brake
- 1:28:38ducts and then he had brake failure.
- 1:28:39Failure and brake issues and stuff and couldn't drive the car and had to retire
- 1:28:43the car Because the plastic baggy ziploc wouldn't have melted under the
- 1:28:47extreme heat of the anti gravity brakes
- 1:28:50apparently subway five dollar foot long subwrappers are extremely robust And
- 1:28:56can withstand nuclear temperatures.
- 1:28:59Maybe it's the foil paper from Hardee's, right?
- 1:29:02Remember, it's like foil backed paper to keep it warm.
- 1:29:05Yes, it was a checkers burger wrapper.
- 1:29:08That's terrible.
- 1:29:09Is there anything else going on in Formula 1?
- 1:29:11There's the whole Bodas and Russell running into each other.
- 1:29:16The conspiracy theory is that they did it on purpose.
- 1:29:19So that Lewis Hamilton would get unlapped, you know, during the red flag.
- 1:29:23I don't know how that actually works because one, they could not have
- 1:29:26anticipated an actual red flag to, I mean, they're all competitors.
- 1:29:31Botis hates Lewis, uh, Hamilton.
- 1:29:34So I don't, I don't see how that could have happened, but.
- 1:29:37You know, whatever they, they collided, you know, both of them ended their races.
- 1:29:42I forget who won.
- 1:29:43I think Max Verstappen won the race, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:29:46Nobody cares.
- 1:29:46Let's move on.
- 1:29:47A
- 1:29:48hundred percent.
- 1:29:49So you remember a while back, we talked about the Mach E 1400.
- 1:29:55that?
- 1:29:56Yes.
- 1:29:57So Ford put out that monster super drift car equivalent to 1400 horsepower.
- 1:30:03It's a Ford performance factory only vehicle.
- 1:30:05They've got some factory drivers, you know, doing all these videos and whatnot.
- 1:30:09So to give you a taste, quote unquote, of what the experience is like in the Mach E
- 1:30:151400, they have partnered with hot ones.
- 1:30:19To create the maki hot sauce.
- 1:30:21And so we posted the video of this as Ford factory driver and the
- 1:30:25host of hot ones, sit down together and kind of go back and forth.
- 1:30:29It's, it's an interesting kind of fun little two minute video
- 1:30:31showcasing the maki and this hot sauce, which probably tastes like
- 1:30:36liquid fire, as far as I can tell.
- 1:30:38I mean, they're near tears in the video as they're eating these chicken wings
- 1:30:41and they keep pouring the sauce on there.
- 1:30:43And it's, it's pretty brutal looking.
- 1:30:46I don't know, get yourself some maki 1400 hot sauce.
- 1:30:49That's all I'm going to say.
- 1:30:50Next up Forza Motorsports.
- 1:30:53We talked about that last month with Tom.
- 1:30:55We keep hinting at the fact that Forza 8 is on the horizon.
- 1:30:59No pun intended,
- 1:31:02but we've been hearing that Forza 8, now more officially known as Forza
- 1:31:07Motorsport, just Forza Motorsport period and versus Forza Horizon, they've been
- 1:31:11hinting for the last two years or so that it's supposed to be coming out.
- 1:31:14Has
- 1:31:14never been officially given a release date.
- 1:31:17All that has been said by Turn 10 is that they're making one,
- 1:31:20but there's zero release date.
- 1:31:23It's all there's nothing
- 1:31:24at my point.
- 1:31:25Exactly, Tanya.
- 1:31:26And so now you can sign up to beta test.
- 1:31:29Forza eight, we'll call it that.
- 1:31:32And there's still no release date for as far as the article is concerned.
- 1:31:34It came from Jalopnik.
- 1:31:35It basically says that there's no scheduled release date, even for 2021,
- 1:31:40which means Forza eight pushes into 22.
- 1:31:43So if you're looking for.
- 1:31:45Something new to play.
- 1:31:46I highly recommend European truck racing championship that is available
- 1:31:50for free right now on Xbox live.
- 1:31:53And by the way, you don't need an Xbox live subscription
- 1:31:56anymore for free to play games.
- 1:31:57So have at it, check it out.
- 1:31:59Plenty of good stuff out there on the marketplace.
- 1:32:01Paid for and sponsored by Microneski.
- 1:32:06In some sad news, titled things that aren't going to happen.
- 1:32:10And we really hope they were.
- 1:32:11Remember Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
- 1:32:13New track being built.
- 1:32:14It's going to be the newest track east of the Mississippi.
- 1:32:17Yeah.
- 1:32:17All the permits fell through.
- 1:32:19Not going to happen.
- 1:32:21Big surprise.
- 1:32:22Yeah.
- 1:32:24Fortunately, another new track close to home.
- 1:32:28Not going to happen.
- 1:32:29Thank you to everyone that petitioned the municipalities,
- 1:32:32you know, wrote in all that stuff.
- 1:32:34All the support from the different HPD organizations, be it, you know,
- 1:32:38chin and max speed and all the people that we talked to that were pushing
- 1:32:42to have Oak Ridge built and be the first ones there, just disappointed
- 1:32:46to hear that it's not going to happen.
- 1:32:47However, the face of drag racing is going to change.
- 1:32:50And I think there was some foreshadowing earlier this month
- 1:32:53when we talked to Bobby Parks.
- 1:32:54What do you think, Brad?
- 1:32:55So apparently the EV evolution revolution.
- 1:32:59whatever you call it, is making its way to drag racing.
- 1:33:03And they're going to do a quarter mile NHRA drag strip dedicated to EV cars.
- 1:33:09That'll be the quietest drag strip.
- 1:33:11Can you imagine just a bunch of whining, uh, but Bobby talked about this on
- 1:33:16the episode, The Black Nasty, where he mentioned, you know, EV was coming.
- 1:33:20He wants to get in front.
- 1:33:21You know, he said there's a good chance that if it catches on, the NHRA would
- 1:33:26get behind it and create a class for EVs.
- 1:33:28Now, can they compete against, you know, 9, 000 horsepower top thrill
- 1:33:32dragsters, or even the 1300, you know, horsepower, no prep class that he runs in.
- 1:33:37I will see, I want to see it happen.
- 1:33:40I'd be very curious to see what kind of times they put down, but
- 1:33:43to Tanya's point, it's going to be a very anticlimactic sound.
- 1:33:47I mean, there's all the, you know.
- 1:33:49Amateur drag racing of Tesla, ludicrous mode versus Ferraris and all that.
- 1:33:55And generally at winning.
- 1:33:56So, you know, I'm sure if someone dedicates, I want to put all
- 1:34:01the power down at once, I get one pull and the juice is gone.
- 1:34:06How much could you get out of it?
- 1:34:08That's the question.
- 1:34:09And I think that has yet to be figured out.
- 1:34:11So
- 1:34:11yeah.
- 1:34:11How many, how many polls are you getting out of a ludicrous mode?
- 1:34:14Tesla?
- 1:34:15I think the interesting part about embracing this is much like there were
- 1:34:19pioneers in drag racing back in the fifties and sixties, you know, you
- 1:34:23know, garlots, all these guys, you know, the first, you know, the Coleman
- 1:34:26brothers, the first ones to put the motor basically behind the driver.
- 1:34:29I, that's some, that's something I read.
- 1:34:31You can, guys can correct me if I'm wrong on that one out there and listener land.
- 1:34:35But, you know, there's been a lot of.
- 1:34:37Interesting advancements that have come by the way of drag racing.
- 1:34:40And I'm kind of wondering if we're standing on this precipice now going,
- 1:34:43you know, that scrawny little kid over there that's running that EV he's going
- 1:34:48to be the next, you know, garlots or whoever that's going to be in the NHRA
- 1:34:52hall of fame, you know, 30, 40, 50 years from now being the guy that pioneered
- 1:34:56the EV dragster or whatever it might be.
- 1:34:58So it'd be really cool to see where it goes.
- 1:35:00I think history in the making, right?
- 1:35:02By the way, Elon Musk, if you listen to our podcast, which I hope you do,
- 1:35:06because we have a lot of Tesla talk on here, please send Bobby parks,
- 1:35:10the black nasty, a Tesla Roadster.
- 1:35:13So he can run it for you.
- 1:35:15A hundred percent.
- 1:35:16It'll be interesting with.
- 1:35:17You know, there's the Formula E and, you know, if the drag racing goes electric
- 1:35:23and different racing venues go electric, what will change in, because you've,
- 1:35:28you've said this before about a lot of different innovation trickles down
- 1:35:31from the developments of, you know, Formula One and other racing bodies.
- 1:35:35It trickles down into the cars we drive every day.
- 1:35:38And, you know, as You know, this new territory of electric vehicles is coming.
- 1:35:43What advances will we hopefully get in terms of safety?
- 1:35:46Because going back to the horrible accident or incident in Texas here, the
- 1:35:52two people dying in that fire, the car crashes car, you know, sometimes those
- 1:35:57guys crash on the drag strip, they lose control, go sideways to go into a barrier.
- 1:36:01If they can't put the fire out.
- 1:36:02For hours.
- 1:36:04How are they extricating that driver?
- 1:36:06You know, what advances can we do?
- 1:36:08Um, you know, is there ways to quick disconnect the batteries and in a way
- 1:36:13that, I don't know, isolates the reaction?
- 1:36:17Or are there other things that can be done to make those kind of incidents safer?
- 1:36:20Will we get that technology trickling down?
- 1:36:22It's gonna be like demolition man, when the impact occurs.
- 1:36:26Flame is detected.
- 1:36:26Foam is ejected.
- 1:36:27Mm-hmm.
- 1:36:28. And that's the end of that.
- 1:36:29Right?
- 1:36:30The other thing I'm joking, but that could be not far from reality.
- 1:36:34I think the other thing we're going to see is, you know, as Bobby said,
- 1:36:37drag racing, probably one of the safest motor sport compared to a lot
- 1:36:40of other ones, especially door to door racing, you know, things like that.
- 1:36:43And there are, there are tragic accidents in drag racing.
- 1:36:46I think there are four.
- 1:36:46Few and far between compared to some of the other motor sports that are out there.
- 1:36:50But when they're big, they're big, right?
- 1:36:51And you see some crazy stuff at the drag strip.
- 1:36:53However, I think some of those things are a direct result of the fact that
- 1:36:58those vehicles are rear wheel drive, they're high horsepower, they're
- 1:37:00two wheel drive more than anything, and they have that propensity to
- 1:37:05torque and lift a car, you know, wheelie bars, all this kind of stuff.
- 1:37:07Lots to get super technical on it.
- 1:37:09If you are interested, listen to Bobby's episode.
- 1:37:11He goes into detail and all that.
- 1:37:13I think with the.
- 1:37:14You're going to see a lot more all wheel drive to get the maximum power,
- 1:37:19the maximum grip, and that's going to change the nature of drag racing too,
- 1:37:24because you're going to have more control over the vehicle with all wheel drive.
- 1:37:28I think you're going to have a less of.
- 1:37:30Of a propensity to lift the car off the ground, which creates, you know,
- 1:37:34unstableness also air catching the underneath of the car to flip it over.
- 1:37:37All those things that we see with current dragsters, you know, today.
- 1:37:41So I think it's going to change the sport altogether because the overall engineering
- 1:37:45of the EV is completely different, you know, than what we're used to today.
- 1:37:49It doesn't have the same drive train or drive train at all.
- 1:37:52For that matter, it's, it's just very, very different.
- 1:37:55But to Tanya's point, yeah, they need to redirect their safety
- 1:38:00focus, you know, for some of these other more traditional incidents
- 1:38:05to new scenarios that can come up.
- 1:38:08I mean, batteries overheating and catching fire is a real thing.
- 1:38:12It happens.
- 1:38:13It happens a lot.
- 1:38:14I mean, it happens with cell phones, it's, it's a new danger that they
- 1:38:19need to plan for before they can start coming up with a new class or
- 1:38:24a new series in this and the other.
- 1:38:25Actually, they should probably reach out to the regulators who host the, I
- 1:38:31mean, they should reach out to the FIA.
- 1:38:34Regarding the formula E series and find out what they do, how they mitigate the
- 1:38:39potential risks for batteries exploding or catching fire and things like that.
- 1:38:44Absolutely.
- 1:38:45I couldn't agree with that more.
- 1:38:47So let's transition out to some just local news here as we kind of round out.
- 1:38:51the episode.
- 1:38:52So upcoming events for GTM.
- 1:38:55If anybody's interested, we've got some off road adventure coming up in May.
- 1:38:59A lot of folks have already returned to the track.
- 1:39:01A lot of the S.
- 1:39:02C.
- 1:39:02C.
- 1:39:02A.
- 1:39:03Majors have already kicked off Mars races.
- 1:39:05You know, start this weekend, the first round of that.
- 1:39:07That's the local club racing series here in the DMV.
- 1:39:10We also have a trip Planned for Tail The Dragon.
- 1:39:13We've got some, what we call away games coming up.
- 1:39:15You know where we're gonna be going to Nelson Ledges and Carolina Motor
- 1:39:18Sports Park and a lot of other places that we wouldn't normally go to in
- 1:39:21a track season to try to kind of get away from the normal and do something
- 1:39:24different, especially since a lot of us have been home for a while and been
- 1:39:28yearning to get back to the track.
- 1:39:30Our Summer Bash event we have scheduled, it's gonna be July 30th
- 1:39:33through August 2nd at Summit Point.
- 1:39:35It's gonna be four days over three tracks.
- 1:39:38That is our annual anniversary party for GTM.
- 1:39:41We, you know, we pick an event, we go to, we partner with somebody, we throw
- 1:39:44a big party, you know, commemorating our anniversary and it's a lot of fun.
- 1:39:48So we encourage you guys to come out and check it out.
- 1:39:50If you've never been to the track before, tons of ride alongs.
- 1:39:53Especially with, you know, a lot of the folks in our group are coaches.
- 1:39:56So they're able to take you out and experience the track for yourself.
- 1:39:59There's no cost to come and spectate.
- 1:40:00There's no cost to come and hang out.
- 1:40:01So check that out July 30th through August 2nd at Summit Point
- 1:40:05Motorsports Park in West Virginia.
- 1:40:07On top of that, we are going to start our VRL.
- 1:40:11Series 15 in May, as Tom talked about on the last episode of the drive through, but
- 1:40:17we're also adding a special, we'll call it adjacent series, which is going to be
- 1:40:21European truck racing to follow along with the open wheel series that we're running.
- 1:40:27So we're going to be running two series at the same time.
- 1:40:29They're optional.
- 1:40:30If you're interested in that, check it out, the information
- 1:40:32on garage riot, or check out the information on gtmotorsports.
- 1:40:35org under services, virtual racing league to get more information on that.
- 1:40:40You know, give us a shout out if you want to participate or be involved in that.
- 1:40:43It's going to be a lot of fun.
- 1:40:44And you know, there's, it's always a good time.
- 1:40:45Bragging rights, prizes, awards night, all that fun stuff at the end of the year.
- 1:40:49Meanwhile, our track schedule is still huge because it is to be still really
- 1:40:54basically the beginning of the season.
- 1:40:56There's So I can't sit here and prattle off all the events that
- 1:40:59are happening in April and May.
- 1:41:01All I can tell you is there's probably 200 of them and you
- 1:41:05should really go to HPD junkie.
- 1:41:06com and check it out, filter by your geographical area or closest area
- 1:41:12track to you to see what's going on.
- 1:41:14And I will say.
- 1:41:15Dave Peters has done an excellent job putting all the information in there.
- 1:41:18A lot of new logos popping up on HPD junkie this year, you
- 1:41:22know, max speed, just track it.
- 1:41:24It's been around for a while, but we're starting to see
- 1:41:26more and more events for them.
- 1:41:27Obviously we just did an episode with auto interests.
- 1:41:30There's a lot more logos showing up on those calendars as outside
- 1:41:33of the normal, you know, PCAs and BMW clubs and things like that.
- 1:41:36And they're on there as well.
- 1:41:37So you have the full.
- 1:41:38schedule of all the tracks throughout the entire year now, including Canada.
- 1:41:43So there's a lot of stuff to go through.
- 1:41:45So if you want to go to most port, go check it out.
