- 0:16Christmas, A season of anticipation, reflection, and
- 0:20light in the darker days. During this special season of
- 0:24Advent, we will journey through the Advent themes of Hope,
- 0:28Peace, Joy and Love. This second week of Edfund, we
- 0:32will join Kristen Birchfield. She grew up in Medford, OR USA.
- 0:36She spent her life surfing both locally and globally.
- 0:40Kristen serves now on the Eurasia region where she and her
- 0:43family have lived since 2020, first in a Mount Jordan and now
- 0:48in Lisbon, Portugal. Kristen will speak this week
- 0:51about the team Edfund Peace. Hello everyone, and welcome
- 0:54back. In our last episode, we talked
- 0:57about how God reconciles himself to us through Jesus Christ and
- 1:02the ministry of reconciliation that God has given us.
- 1:06But before we can take peace and reconciliation out into the
- 1:11world, we have to make sure that we have peace in our own hearts.
- 1:16So that's what we're going to be talking about today.
- 1:19Let me start by reading our scripture for the day from
- 1:22Philippians 4, verses 6 and seven.
- 1:26Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation
- 1:30by prayer and petition with Thanksgiving present your
- 1:35requests to God and the peace of God, which transcends all
- 1:39understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ
- 1:44Jesus. I think Christmas is the perfect
- 1:48time to talk about and reflect on peace within ourselves
- 1:53because it can be such a busy and full season.
- 1:58There are dinner parties and school programs, special church
- 2:03services and service opportunities.
- 2:06Finding the perfect gift, baking, planning and travel.
- 2:11So many good things all happening in a relatively short
- 2:16period of time. And if we are not careful, these
- 2:21good things can start to feel, well, less than good.
- 2:28Well, We are filling our calendars with activities, our
- 2:31homes with people, and our stomachs with food, all things
- 2:36that we love. Sometimes it can all feel like
- 2:40too much. But in this passage of
- 2:43Scripture, the Apostle Paul provides us with practical steps
- 2:48we can take to find peace within our own hearts.
- 2:53This week we are celebrating the Prince of Peace, who brings a
- 2:57peace that transcends all understanding.
- 3:01We don't have to sit in the chaos of busy seasons, Christmas
- 3:06or otherwise, experiencing anxiety instead of peace.
- 3:11We can take that anxiety to God in prayer, giving thanks and
- 3:16allowing God's peace to guard our hearts and our minds.
- 3:20I have found that in this season, finding a calm place to
- 3:26practice this kind of prayer has been essential.
- 3:30I personally find warm white Christmas lights to be very
- 3:34calming, and sitting in a room lit up only by strands of these
- 3:40almost golden twinkle lights helps me to open my heart and
- 3:46clear my mind in a way that I just can't under big, bright
- 3:51fluorescent lights. And I know that many people in
- 3:56our region and around the world right now are living in places
- 4:01that are not peaceful, and finding even a little space for
- 4:06peace is a tremendous challenge. But I also know that we have a
- 4:12God that gives us peace beyond our circumstances.
- 4:17True peace comes from faith in Christ.
- 4:21Even in the midst of everything happening in our lives and in
- 4:26our world. And in a world full of conflict
- 4:30and anxiety, we can find peace through prayer and trust that
- 4:37goes beyond our own understanding.
- 4:41And in this Christmas season, as we slow down and give our
- 4:46anxieties and worries to the Lord, as we trust in the promise
- 4:51of peace, maybe those around us will notice something different
- 4:57in US. Maybe they will see an
- 5:00alternative way to go about and celebrate the season.
- 5:06So as we end our time together today, I would challenge you to
- 5:10examine what you have going on in this season, all of the good
- 5:16things that you love to do at this time of year, and see what
- 5:21may need to be put on hold or set aside so that you can make
- 5:26room for prayer. Our passage today from
- 5:29Philippians 4 offers us the means by which the promised
- 5:33peace of the coming Christ can be experienced in the present
- 5:38moment. And when we have peace with God
- 5:42and peace in our hearts, we are better able to be the
- 5:45peacemakers in the world that God has called us to be.
- 5:51As you go about the rest of this Advent season, may the Lord
- 5:55bless and keep you. The Lord make his face shine
- 5:59upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord turn his face towards
- 6:03you and give you peace. Let's pray.
- 6:08Heavenly Father, as we conclude our devotional time today, our
- 6:13hearts turn toward you in gratitude for the gift of your
- 6:17Son, our Prince of Peace, whose arrival we anticipate during
- 6:22this Advent season. We thank You for the promise of
- 6:25a peace that transcends all understanding.
- 6:29We confess that we often allow the good things in our lives to
- 6:33crowd out the best thing, time alone with You in prayer.
- 6:38Forgive us for our anxieties and our attempts to manage life and
- 6:42our own strength. Teach us to practice Your
- 6:45presence daily, making room for You, and that's the demands of
- 6:50the season and the circumstances of our world.
- 6:55We ask for your empowering work of Your Holy Spirit to transform
- 6:59our anxious hearts, guarding our minds in Christ Jesus and making
- 7:05us instruments of peace where you have us.
- 7:08We pray all of this in Jesus name, Amen.
